Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance Perilla frutescens (Linnaeus) Britton, Mem. Torrey Bot. Club 5: 277. 1894., is famous as a worldwide plant with multiple medical parts, including leaves, stems, seeds, etc . Perillae Fructus , the desiccative ripe fruit of P. frutescens , is locally called Zisuzi in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. It is a popularly used herb for relieving cough and asthma, dissipating phlegm and treating constipation in some Asian countries, such as China, Japan, India, South Korea, etc . Various chemical compounds were isolated and identified from Perillae Fructus , which had many biological activities. The aim of the review This review aims to summarize the botany, ethnopharmacological applications, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicity and quality control of Perillae Fructus to provide scientific evidence for development and utilization Perillae Fructus . Materials and methods Relevant information about Perillae Fructus was collected from ScienceDirect, PubMed, Web of science, CNKI, WanFang data, ancient classics and clinical reports. Some electronic databases were also retrieved. Results Generally, Perillae Fructus was exerted to treat cough and asthma in traditional application. It also had the effect on moistening intestine to relieve constipation for tremendous lipid substances. Up to now, 193 compounds have been isolated and identified from Perillae Fructus , mainly including fatty acids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, phytosterols, triterpenoids and volatile oils. As for its pharmacological activities, prevalent traditional applications of Perillae Fructus have been supported by modern pharmacological experiments in vivo or in vitro, such as anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. Besides, Perillae Fructus also has the pharmacological activities, including hypolipidemic, anti-tumor, antibacterial, etc. This review will provide a scientific basis for further studies and rational applications of Perillae Fructus in the future. Conclusions According to its traditional applications, phytochemicals and pharmacological activities, Perillae Fructus was regarded as a valuable herb for application in medicine and food fields. Although some ingredients have been confirmed to have multiple pharmacological activities, their mechanisms of action are still unclear. Further studies on the material basis and mechanism of action are clearly warranted.

Abstract:Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton, an important pharmaceutical and nutraceutical crop, is widely cultivated in East Asian countries. In this review, we present the latest research findings on the phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of P. frutescens. Different databases, including PubMed, Scopus, CNKI, Agricola, Scifinder, Embase, ScienceDirect, DOAJ, and Web of Science, were searched to present the best review. In this review, we clearly represent the active constituents responsible for each and every pharmacological activity, plausible mechanism of action, and maximum inhibitory concentrations, as well as IC50 values. Approximately 400 different bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, terpenoids, quinines, phenylpropanoids, polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, coumarins, anthocyanins, carotenoids, neolignans, fatty acids, polycosanols, tocopherols, and sitosterols, have been reported in the leaves, seeds, roots, and aerial parts of P. frutescens. The bioactive constituents of P. frutescens exhibited different enzyme-inhibition properties, including antihyaluronidase effects and aldose reductase inhibitory, α-glucosidase inhibitory, xanthine oxidase inhibitory, and tyrosinase inhibitory properties. P. frutescens showed strong anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, anti-spasmodic, anticancer, antioxidant, antimicrobial, insecticidal, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective effects. Hence, the active constituents of P. frutescens used in the treatment of diabetes and diabetic complications (retinopathy, neuropathy, and nephropathy), prevention of hyperuricemia in gout patients, hyper pigmentation, allergic conditions, skin inflammation, skin allergy, atopic dermatitis, periodontosis, androgenic alopecia, gastric inflammation, oesophagitis, carcinogenesis, cardiovascular, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and cerebral ischemic disorders. Furthermore, we revealed the most active constituents and possible mechanisms of the pharmacological properties of P. frutescens.

Abstract:Perilla frutescens, an annual herb of the Labiatae family, has been cultivated in China for more than 2000 years. P. frutescens is the one of the first medicinal and edible plant published by the Ministry of Health. Its leaves, stems and seeds can be used as medicine and edible food. Because of the abundant nutrients and bioactive components in this plant, P. frutescens has been studied extensively in medicine, food, health care and chemical fields with great prospects for development. This paper reviews the cultivation history, chemical compositions and pharmacological activities of P. frutescens, which provides a reference for the development and utilization of P. frutescens resources.

Abstract:Two Senecio plants, Senecio cannabifolius Less. and its variety S. cannabifolius Less. var. integrifolius (Kiodz.) Kidam., were both used as the raw material of Feining granule, a traditional Chinese medicine product for treating respiratory diseases. In this study, the chemical profiles of these two plants were investigated and compared by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). A total number of 83 constituents, including 55 organic acids, 11 flavonoids, 4 alkaloids, 3 terpenes and 10 other types of compounds, were characterized. The results indicated that the levels of most flavonoids were higher in S. cannabifolius than in S. cannabifolius var. integrifolius, however, the levels of hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) were higher in S. cannabifolius var. integrifolius than in S. cannabifolius. Fifteen constituents were evaluated on lipopolysaccharides (LPS) induced RAW 264.7 cells, and eleven of them showed inhibition effect against nitric oxide (NO) production. Finally, the levels of ten major constituents (including seven anti-inflammatory active ones) and two PAs in Feining granule from two Senecio plants were determined and compared by the LC-UV and LC-MS methods, respectively. It was found that one organic acid (homogentisic acid) and two PAs (seneciphylline and senecionine) had higher contents in the preparation of S. cannabifolius var. integrifolius than in that of S. cannabifolius, however, the situations were inverse for the levels of four organic acids and flavonoids (chlorogenic acid, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, and isochlorogenic acid B). Based on the above results, S. cannabifolius might be a better raw material for Feining granule than S. cannabifolius var. integrifolius, because it contained more anti-inflammatory constituents and less hepatotoxic PAs than the latter. However, more pharmacological evaluations should be carried out to support the selection. The results in this study were helpful for the quality control of Feining granule. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Objective: To study the differences in chemical composition among different medicinal parts of Angelicae sinensis radix and distinguish them by determining three active compounds( chlorogenic acid,ferulic acid and Z- ligustilide) and developing characteristic chromatograms using HPLC. Methods: An HPLC method for quantitative analysis was applied with an Agilent ZORBAX SB- C 18 column( 5 μm,4. 6 mm × 250 mm) using gradient elution( 0- 5 min,15% B→40% B; 5- 14 min,40% B; 14- 25 min,40% B→65% B; 25- 35 min,65% B; 35- 40 min,65% B→ 90% B; 40 ~ 45 min,90% B→100% B; 45- 57 min,100% B) with 0. 05% aqueous acetic acid( A)- methanol( B) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0. 6 mL·min- 1,the compounds were measured at multiple wavelengths( 0-30 min,326 nm; 30- 57 min,350 nm),and the column temperature was set at 35 ℃. For characteristic chromatograms, chromatographic experiments were performed on an Agilent ZORBAX SB- C 18 column( 5 μm,4. 6 mm × 250 mm) using gradient elution( 0- 5 min,15% B→35% B; 5- 30 min,35% B→65% B; 30- 45 min,65% B; 45- 58 min,65% B→90% B; 58- 63 min,90% B→100% B; 63- 75 min,100% B) with 0. 05% aqueous acetic acid( A)- methanol( B) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0. 6 mL·min- 1,the detection wavelength was 254 nm,and the column temperature was set at 25 ℃. Results: The contents of chlorogenic acid,ferulic acid and Z- ligustilide ranged 0. 020%-0. 079%,0. 025%- 0. 134% and 0. 273%- 1. 46% in different medicinal parts of Angelicae sinensis radix from different regions. There were 21 characteristic peaks in the characteristic chromatograms. The samples were divided into three categories by principal component analysis( PCA),partial least squares method( PLS) and cluster analysis. Conclusion: The method for quantitative analysis was sensitive,convenient and practical,and it can be used to determine the active compounds in different medicinal parts of Angelicae sinensis radix. The characteristic chromatograms can be used to evaluate the quality of Angelicae sinensis radix. It was suggested that different medicinal parts of Angelica sinensis varied in the contents of components,which supported the reasonable usage of different parts for medication.
Metabolites and chemometric study of Perilla (Perilla frutescens) from different varieties and geographical origins

Abstract:Perilla (Perilla frutescens, PF) is an annual labiaceae herb that can be used as vegetable, seasoner, and herb, which mainly includes red PF (P. frutescens var. crispa) and green PF (P. frutescens var. frutescens). Red and green Perilla is mainly used for medicine and food, respectively. In order to explore the differences between these two Perilla cultivars and the effects of origin on them, we studied the components of 130 Perilla samples from different origins by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with partial least squares discriminant analysis and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis. In this study, 57 potential compounds were analyzed, mainly including organic acids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and anthocyanins. In different varieties of Perilla, anthocyanins were found only in red PF. In addition, the content of four flavonoids, two organic acids, and one coumarin in red PF is much higher than that in green PF. Among the same variety of Perilla, the contents of three metabolites were higher in the north of China for red Perilla, while five metabolites were higher in the south of China for green Perilla. Overall, this research provided a basis for distinguishing different varieties and sources of Perilla through the differential metabolites of Perilla.

Abstract:Perillae Folium (PF), the leaf of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt is extensively used as a culinary vegetable and medicinal herb in many countries. Purple PF (P. frutescens var. arguta) and green PF (P. frutescens var. frutescens) are two of the main varieties. In this study, UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS assisted with feature-based molecular networking (FBMN) was applied for chemical characterization. In total, 82 metabolites, mainly phenolic acid derivatives were identified from PF. With the help of FBMN, five organic acid glucosides together with three N-phenylpropenoyl-L-amino acids (NPAs) were identified in PF for the first time. Multivariate statistical methods were utilized for comprehensive comparison of purple and green PF profiles. 12 compounds with their relative contents varied significantly between purple and green PF were screened out. Overall, the present study offers valuable insights for chemical elucidation of PF which would be helpful for comprehensive utilization of PF resource.

Abstract:Perillae Folium (PF), the leaf of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt, is extensively used as culinary vegetable in many countries. It can be divided into two major varietal forms based on leaf color variation, including purple PF (Perilla frutescens var. arguta) and green PF (P. frutescens var. frutescens). The aroma of purple and green PF is discrepant. To figure out the divergence of chemical composition in purple and green PF, gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to analyze compounds in purple and green PF. A total of 54 compounds were identified and relatively quantified. Multivariate statistical methods, including principal component analysis (PCA), orthogonal partial least-squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) and clustering analysis (CA), were used to screen the chemical markers for discrimination of purple and green PF. Seven compounds that accumulated discrepantly in green and purple PF were characterized as chemical markers for the discrimination of the purple and green PF. Among these 7 marker compounds, limonene, shisool and perillaldehyde that from the same branch of the terpenoid biosynthetic pathway were with relatively higher contents in purple PF, while perilla ketone, isoegomaketone, tocopheryl and squalene on other branch pathways were higher in green PF. The results of the present study are expected to provide theoretical support for the development and utilization of PF resources.

Abstract:Paeonia suffruticosa Andr. (Mudan) as a famous medicinal and ornamental plant is widely cultivated in China. In the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) system, only the root bark (Moutan Cortex) is used in the production of crude drugs. The present study aimed to systematically compare the chemical profiles and biological activities of different parts (root bark, root core, old stems, young stems, and leaves) of P. suffruticosa by LCMS-IT-TOF analysis and bioassay in vitro. In total, 55 constituents involving 15 monoterpene glycosides, 13 galloyl glucoses, seven gallic acid derivatives, four acetophenones, six flavonoids, and ten other compounds were characterized according to their UV absorptions, MS/MS fragmentation, and comparing with reference compounds. Interestingly, one new monoterpene, oxypaeoniflorgenin, was assigned by its MSn and UV patterns. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that gallic acid (2) mainly in leaves (5439.1 ± 90.2 μg/g), paeoniflorin (13) mainly in root bark (16,378.9 ± 195.4 μg/g), root core (17,130.2 ± 125.9 μg/g), and leaves (16,682.9 ± 181.2 μg/g), and benzoylpaeoniflorin (46) and paeonol (49) mainly in root bark (2360.1 ± 41.4 and 10,142.3 ± 252.5 μg/g) and root core (2249.5 ± 21.7 and 10,441.6 ± 363.9 μg/g) were the main constituents in P. suffruticosa. The chemical constituents of root bark and root core were similar and obviously different from the stems and leaves. All the five parts were assayed for their agonistic effect on four neurotransmitter receptors (MT1, MT2, 5-HT1A, and 5-HT2C) and antidiabetic potency on α-glucosidase, PTP1B, and DPPIV. Besides root bark, the root core, stems, and leaves were also revealed with fascinating activity in this study. The extraction rate of root bark (35.4% ± 2.18) was two times higher than that of root core (18.4% ± 0.81), supporting the traditional application. This investigation provides new perspectives for understanding the chemical divergence between different parts of P. suffruticosa and their comprehensive utilization.

Abstract:Perilla (Perilla frutescens L.) is a time-honored herbal plant with widespread applications in both medicine and culinary practices around the world. Profiling the essential organs and tissues with medicinal significance on a global scale offers valuable insights for enhancing the yield of desirable compounds in Perilla and other medicinal plants. In the present study, genome-wide RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) and assessing the global spectrum of metabolites were carried out in the two major organs/tissues of stem (PfST) and leaf (PfLE) in Perilla. The results showed a total of 18,490 transcripts as the DEGs (differentially expressed genes) and 144 metabolites as the DAMs (differentially accumulated metabolites) through the comparative profiling of PfST vs PfLE, and all the DEGs and DAMs exhibited tissue-specific trends. An association analysis between the transcriptomics and metabolomics revealed 14 significantly enriched pathways for both DEGs and DAMs, among which the pathways of Glycine, serine and threonine metabolism (ko00260), Glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism (ko00630), and Glucagon signaling pathway (ko04922) involved relatively more DEGs and DAMs. The results of qRT-PCR assays of 18 selected DEGs confirmed the distinct tissue-specific characteristics of all identified DEGs between PfST and PfLE. Notably, all eight genes associated with the flavonoid biosynthesis/metabolism pathways exhibited significantly elevated expression levels in PfLE compared to PfST. This observation suggests a heightened accumulation of metabolites related to flavonoids in Perilla leaves. The findings of this study offer a comprehensive overview of the organs and tissues in Perilla that have medicinal significance.

Abstract:Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton is an annual herb plant of the Perilla genus in the Labiatae family, which is commonly utilized as an edible and medicinal resource. Polysaccharides are among the major components and essential bioactive compounds of P. frutescens, which exhibit a multitude of biological activities, including antioxidant, antitumor, anti-fatigue, immunoregulation, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering effects. As a natural carbohydrate, P. frutescens polysaccharide has the potential to be utilized in the development of drugs and functional materials. In this paper, we provide an overview of progress made on the extraction, purification, structural characterization, and bioactivity of polysaccharides from different parts of P. frutescens. The challenges and opportunities for research are discussed, along with the potential development prospects and future areas of focus in the study of P. frutescens polysaccharides.

Abstract:Abstract Perilla frutescens (L.) is an important medicinal and edible plant in China with nutritional and medical uses. The extract from leaves of Perilla frutescens contains flavonoids and volatile oils, which are mainly used in traditional Chinese medicine. In this study, we analyzed the transcriptomic and metabolomic data of the leaves of two Perilla frutescens varieties: JIZI 1 and JIZI 2. A total of 9277 differentially expressed genes and 223 flavonoid metabolites were identified in these varieties. Chrysoeriol, apigenin, malvidin, cyanidin, kaempferol, and their derivatives were abundant in the leaves of Perilla frutescens , which were more than 70% of total flavonoid contents. A total of 77 unigenes encoding 15 enzymes were identified as candidate genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis in the leaves of Perilla frutescens . High expression of the CHS gene enhances the accumulation of flavonoids in the leaves of Perilla frutescens . Our results provide valuable information on the flavonoid metabolites and candidate genes involved in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathways in the leaves of Perilla frutescens .

Abstract:Perilla frutescens was an annual herb considered as one of the "One Root of Medicine and Food", and it was used widely for food and medical treatment. Its main active ingredients were volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but it was easily affected during drying and storage. The leaves, seeds and stems had shown differences in therapeutic effects, but the underlying reason remained unclear. In the present work, headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) and headspace solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) were utilized to effectively and comprehensively analyze VOCs of fresh and dried P. frutescens between the leaves, stems and seeds. Meanwhile, chemometric analysis was applied to compare and identify characteristic volatile markers. As a result, 60 VOCs were identified by HS-GC-IMS and 115 VOCs were identified by HS-SPME-GC–MS from P. frutescen . 25 potential volatile markers were selected based on a combination model of orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and random forest (RF). The models could be used to analyze the variation between fresh and dried P. frutescens and distinguish the differences in different parts effectively and comprehensively. It was the first research regarding the method development of HS-GC-IMS and HS-SPME-GC–MS that comprehensively analyzes the VOCs characterization of fresh and dried P. frutescens in different parts and the findings obtained would evaluate the quality and provide a reference for further exploration of the edible and medicinal effects of P. frutescens . These compounds have already been reported in perilla seed, however, little is reported in Perilla pomace, the primary waste during oil production of Perilla seed. OBJECTIVE:To investigate major phenolic compounds in perilla seeds and pomaces in order to check whether the pomace could be an alternative resource to the seed for nutritional and medical purposes. METHODS:Compounds in extracts of perilla seeds and pomaces were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and detected by photodiode array, and by electrospray ionisation with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry. Herb-markers selected by principal components analysis were then quantified in both seeds and pomaces. Moreover, a fingerprinting approach and multiple discriminant analysis were applied to screen the phenolic markers in 22 samples. RESULTS:Ten phenols were tentatively identified, among which four (rosmarinic acid, luteolin, apigenin and rosmarinic acid-3-O-glucoside) were selected as herb-markers. Perilla seeds and pomaces showed similar phenol profiles, however, the pomaces contained almost two times the amount of the four herb-markers than the seeds. CONCLUSION:The results indicated perilla pomace is a promising alternative source of phenolic compounds that could be recovered and potentially used as natural anti-oxidants.

Abstract:Physalis alkekengi L.var. franchetii (Mast.) Makino (PAF) is an important edible and medicinal plant resource in China. Historically, phytochemical studies have primarily examined the calyx and fruit due to their long-standing use in traditional Chinese medicine for their ability to clear heat and detoxify. Metabolites and bioactivities of other parts such as the leaves, stems and roots, are rarely studied. The study involved conducting metabolic profiling of five plant parts of PAF using UPLC-Q-Orbitrap-HRMS analysis, in conjunction with two bioactivity assays. A total of 95 compounds were identified, including physalins, flavonoids, sucrose esters, phenylpropanoids, nitrogenous compounds and fatty acids. Notably, 14 aliphatic sucrose esters, which are potentially novel compounds, were initially identified. Furthermore, one new aliphatic sucrose ester was purified and its structure was elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR analysis. The hierarchical clustering analysis and principal component analysis showed the close clustering of the root and stem, suggesting similarities in their chemical composition, whereas the leaf, calyx and fruit clustered more distantly. Orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis results showed that 41 compounds potentially serve as marker compounds for distinguishing among plant parts. Variations in activity were observed among the plant parts during the comparative evaluation with biological assays. The calyx, leaf and fruit extracts showed stronger antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities than the stem and root extracts, and 19 potential biomarkers were identified by S-plot analysis for the observed activities, including chlorogenic acid, luteolin, cynaroside, physalin A, physalin F, physalin J, apigetrin, quercetin-3β-D-glucoside and five ASEs, which likely explain the observed potent bioactivity.

Abstract:Introduction: Paeonia ostii T. Hong & J.X. Zhang (s.s.) (Chinese name, Fengdan) is a widely cultivated food-medicine plant in China, in which root bark, seed kernels, and flowers are utilized for their medicinal and edible values. However, other parts of the plant are not used efficiently, in part due to a poor understanding of their chemical composition and potential biological activity. Methods: Untargeted ultra-performance liquid chromatography–quadrupole time of flight–mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) metabolomics was applied to characterize the metabolic profiles of 10 different parts of P. ostii . Results and discussion: A total of 160 metabolites were alternatively identified definitely or tentatively, which were significantly different in various plant parts by multivariate statistical analysis. Quantitative analysis showed that underutilized plant parts also contain many active ingredients. Compared with the medicinal part of root bark, the root core part still contains a higher content of paeoniflorin (17.60 ± 0.06 mg/g) and PGG (15.50 ± 2.00 mg/g). Petals, as an edible part, contain high levels of quercitrin, and stamens have higher methyl gallate and PGG. Unexpectedly, the ovary has the highest content of methyl gallate and rather high levels of PGG (38.14 ± 1.27 mg/g), and it also contains surprisingly high concentrations of floralalbiflorin I. Paeoniflorin (38.68 ± 0.76 mg/g) is the most abundant in leaves, and the content is even higher than in the root bark. Branches are also rich in a variety of catechin derivatives and active ingredients such as hydrolyzable tannins. Seed kernels also contain fairly high levels of paeoniflorin and albiflorin. Fruit shells still contain a variety of components, although not at high levels. Seed coats, as by-products removed from peony seeds before oil extraction, have high contents of stilbenes, such as trans -gnetin H and suffruticosol B, showing significant potential for exploitation. Except for the seed kernels, extracts obtained from other parts exhibited good antioxidant activity in DPPH, ABTS, and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays (0.09–1.52 mmol TE/g). Five compounds (gallic acid, PGG, trans -resveratrol, kaempferol, and quercitrin) were important ingredients that contributed to their antioxidant activities. Furthermore, P. ostii seed cakes were first reported to possess agonistic activity toward CB1/CB2 receptors. This study provides a scientific basis for the further development and utilization of P. ostii plant resources.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To carry out a comparison between the cortexes and the roots of Polygala tenuifolia, and to supply references for developing scientific processing method of P. tenuifolia. METHODS: A comprehensive comparison was made by comparing the chemical constitution and pharmacological activities of the cortexes and the roots of P. tenuifolia, i.e., multi-components determination and fingerprint analysis were used to analyze their chemical constituents, and the traditional pharmacological actions of P. tenuifolia, such as cough-relieving, sputum-removing and sedative effects were used to evaluate their efficacy. RESULTS: The chemical constitution of the cortexes, roots and heartwoods of P. tenuifolia was similar, but the contents of the various effective components in the cortexes were more than those in the roots and heartwoods. The pharmacological result revealed that there was no obvious difference between the cortexes and the roots of P. tenuifolia for their activities of cough-relieving, sputum-removing and sedative actions. The roots of P. tenuifolia showed a better tendency than the cortexes for cough-relieving and sputum-removing activities. CONCLUSION: In order to avoid the waste of crude drugs, and to save the cost during heartwood-discarding, the heartwoods of P. tenuifolia are suggested to be kept.

Abstract:Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt. (Lamiaceae), a famous traditional Chinese medicine, has been used for the treatment of various diseases. To evaluate the quality of P. frutescens, a simple, rapid and accurate high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed for the assessment of three bioactive triterpene acids: tormentic acid (TA), oleanolic acid (OA) and ursolic acid (UA). The HPLC system used an Spherisob octadecylsilyl silica (ODS) column with acetonitrile and aqueous H3PO4 as the mobile phase and detection at 206 nm. The method was precise with relative standard deviations for these three constituents that ranged between 0.6–1.5% (intraday) and 0.7–2.6% (interday). The content of these three phytochemicals in the leaves of P. frutescens growing at eight different locations of China was determined to establish the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:Perilla frutescens is an annual herb of the Labiatae family and is widely grown in several countries in Asia. Perilla frutescens is a plant that is used medicinally in its entirety, as seen in its subdivision into perilla seeds, perilla stalks, and perilla leaves, which vary more markedly in their chemical composition. Several studies have shown that Perilla frutescens has a variety of pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, detoxifying, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective. In the absence of a review of Perilla frutescens for the treatment of cancer. This review provides an overview of the chemical composition and molecular mechanisms of Perilla frutescens for cancer treatment. It was found that the main active components of Perilla frutescens producing cancer therapeutic effects were perilla aldehyde (PAH), rosmarinic acid (Ros A), lignan, and isoestrogen (IK). In addition to these, extracts of the leaves and fruits of Perilla frutescens are also included. Among these, perilla seed oil (PSO) has a preventive effect against colorectal cancer due to the presence of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. This review also provides new ideas and thoughts for scientific innovation and clinical applications related to Perilla frutescens.
