Abstract:Cutaneous lupus lesions and the normal appearing skin of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients frequently, but not always, demonstrate the granular detxjsilion of immunogiobulin (Ig) and various complement components (C) along the dermal epidermal junction (DEI). The presence of these deposits have been employed to diagnose cutaneous lupus lesions and to differentiate benign cutaneous from SLE. Preliminary evidence suggests that the presence of these deposits in the normal appearing skin of untreated SLE patients are of prognostic significance. The purpose of this paper is to review the known data legarding the significance of these cle|3osits and to concentrate on the possible etiology ,ind role that these deposits may ur may not have in Ihe generation ofthe inflammatory lupus lesions.
