Abstract:BACKGROUND Perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA) is a highly malignant tumor arising from the biliary tree. Radical surgery is the only treatment offering a chance of long-term survival. However, limited by the tumor's anatomic location and peri-vascular invasion, most patients lose the chance for curative treatment. Therefore, more methods to increase the resectability of tumors as well as to improve outcomes are needed.CASE SUMMARY A 68-year-old female patient had a hepatic hilar mass without obvious symptoms. Laboratory results showed hepatitis B positivity. Magnetic resonance imaging indicated that the mass (maximum diameter: 41 mm) invaded the left and right branches of the main portal vein, as well as the middle, left and right hepatic veins; enlarged lymph nodes were also detected in the hilum. The patient was diagnosed with pCCA, and the clinical stage was determined to be T4N1M0 (stage IIIC). Considering the tumor's anatomic location and vascular invasion, systematic conversion therapy followed by ex vivo liver resection and autotransplantation (ELRA) was determined as personalized treatment for this patient. Our original systemic sequential therapeutic strategy (lenvatinib and tislelizumab in combination with gemcitabine and cisplatin) was successfully adopted as conversion therapy because she achieved partial response after three cycles of treatment, without severe toxicity. ELRA, anastomotic reconstruction of the middle hepatic vein, right hepatic vein, root of portal vein, inferior vena cava and right hepatic artery, and lymph node dissection were performed at one month after systemic therapy. Pathological and immunohistochemical examination confirmed the diagnosis of pCCA with lymph node metastasis. Although the middle hepatic vein was partially obstructed four months later, hepatic vein stent implantation successfully addressed this problem. The patient has survived for 22 mo after the diagnosis, with no evidence of recurrence or metastasis.CONCLUSION An effective therapeutic strategy for conversion therapy greatly increases the feasibility and efficiency of ELRA.
Adjuvant Chemotherapy, with or Without Postoperative Radiotherapy, for Resectable Advanced Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma: Continue or Stop?

Abstract:Aims: The aim of the article is to perform a focused review of adjuvant chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy for the treatment of resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAC).Methods: We performed a Medline database search from 1965 to 2010 using the terms "adjuvant," "trial" and "pancreatic cancer".Results: Adding adjuvant chemotherapy to patients with resectable PAC was associated with significantly increased median overall survival (OS) (odds ratio[OR]: 1.98, p < 0.001), disease-free survival (DFS) (OR: 2.12, p < 0.001), two-year survival (OR: 1.38, p = 0.04) and five-year survival (OR: 2.16, p = 0.007) compared to surgery alone. There was no statistically significant difference observed with regard to OS (OR:0.99, p = 0.93), DFS (OR:0.99, p = 0.95), and two-year survival (OR: 0.90, p = 0.57) between adjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery alone. The further analysis showed that single agent gemcitabine was as active as combined chemotherapy or chemoradiation, which was reflected by an OR of 1.13 (p = 0.26) for OS and 1.08 (p = 0.47) for DFS.Conclusions: A significant benefit with regard to DFS and median OS for adjuvant chemotherapy after PAC resection was demonstrated by this analysis. Successful pancreatectomy after conversion-intended chemotherapy using gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel for unresectable adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas: a case report

Abstract:Background: Adenosquamous carcinoma of the pancreas (ASCP) accounts for only 1-4% of all pancreatic exocrine cancers and has a particularly poor prognosis. The efficacy of chemotherapy for ASCP remains unknown because of the small number of cases, and few studies have evaluated conversion-intended chemotherapy. Case presentation: A 76-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of epigastric pain and nausea. A preoperative contrast-enhanced multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) scan revealed a 17 × 17 mm low-density tumor with an ill-defined margin at the arterial phase in the pancreatic head. The tumor involved the common hepatic artery, left hepatic artery bifurcated from the common hepatic artery, and gastroduodenal artery, and was in contact with the portal vein. Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) showed an uptake in the pancreatic head but no evidence of distant metastasis. The tumor was diagnosed as an adenocarcinoma of the pancreatic head and staged unresectable because the common and left hepatic arteries were involved. Hence, the patient underwent seven courses of conversion-intended chemotherapy using gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma over 7 months. After chemotherapy, the tumor shrank to 10 × 10 mm on contrast-enhanced MDCT. Consequently, the boundary between the tumor and major vessels of the common and left hepatic arteries and the portal vein became clear, and the involvement of the arteries with the tumor was evaluated to be released. The contact of the tumor to the portal vein also reduced to less than half the circumference of the portal vein. FDG-PET showed decreased accumulation in the tumor. Hence, the tumor was judged resectable, and pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed. The tumor and major blood vessels were easily dissected and R0 resection was achieved. The patient experienced no major complications and was discharged on postoperative day 28. The tumor was revealed as ASCP via pathological examination. The patient is alive and recurrence-free seven months after surgery. This is the first report of successful R0 resection for an initially unresectable ASCP following conversion-intended chemotherapy using gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel regimen. Conclusions: Conversion-intended chemotherapy using gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel regimen may be effective for ASCP.

Abstract:The distribution of 24 HLA antigens of the A and B loci was investigated in 38 Israeli ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients of various ethnic origins. This was compared with the distribution in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA), as well as in 456 controls representing the Jewish population and 260 controls representing the Arab population. Included in the study were Ashkenazi Jews and non-Ashkenazi Jews, as well as Moslem and Christian Arabs. The frequency of HLA B27 among AS patients (79 per cent) was significantly greater (P less than 10(-10)) than among the controls (three per cent). Ashkenazi Jews showed a higher relative risk than non-Ashkenazi Jews and Arabs. Six of the AS patients were offspring of consanguineous marriages, but this was not higher than expected and therefore no indication for rare recessive genes contributing to the disease could be demonstrated. This study confirms the association between AS and B27, and extends our knowledge to the heterogeneous population of Israel not previously investigated. A significant but weak association of B27 with RA was noted. No correlation of other HLA antigens with RA or OA was observed.
A Standing Position and Future Perspective of Conversion Surgery in Patients with Initially Unresectable Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma

Abstract:Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC)continues to have a dismal prognosis,with a 5-year survival rate of ＜ 5％.Recent progress in chemotherapy has provided an improved median survival time (MST) in patients with unresectable PDAC.The treatment of unresectable PDAC is still a clinical challenge which may require a multidisciplinary approach.Recent chemotherapy provided the good response rates and the increased rate of conversion surgery in locally advanced PDAC as well as metastatic one.Several articles revealed that high resectability (20％-61％ in patients with URLA-PDAC),high margin-negative resection rate (27％-89％),and high negative lymph node rate (29％-86％) were found in patients with initially UR-PDAC who underwent conversion surgery.Most of arti cle revealed acceptable mortality and morbidity in patients who underwent conversion surgery.The MST ranged from 24 to 56 months in patients who underwent conversion surgery,which was significantly higher than those in patients who did not undergo surgical resection.An appropriate regimen of chemotherapy and measure of tumor remission,surgical indication,optimal time of conversion surgery,and extent of surgical resection are still under investigation.Thus,conversion surgery can be the important key to open the door for improving long-term survival in patients with unresectable PDAC.Sustainable efforts are warranted to conduct a decently designed clinical trial to confirm efficacy of conversion surgery in the subset of patients with initially UR-PDAC.
Carbon-Ion Radiotherapy Combined with Concurrent Chemotherapy for Locally Advanced Pancreatic Cancer: A Retrospective Case Series Analysis

Abstract:Systemic chemotherapy has significantly improved in recent years. In this study. the clinical impact of carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) with concurrent chemotherapy for locally advanced unresectable pancreatic cancer (URPC) was evaluated. Methods: Patients with URPC who were treated with CIRT between January 2016 and December 2020 were prospectively registered and analyzed. The major criteria for registration were (1) diagnosed as URPC on imaging; (2) pathologically diagnosed adenocarcinoma; (3) no distant metastasis; (4) Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0–2; (5) tumors without gastrointestinal tract invasion; and (6) available for concurrent chemotherapy. Patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for more than one year prior to CIRT were excluded. Results: Forty-four patients met the inclusion criteria, and thirty-seven received NAC before CIRT. The median follow-up period of living patients was 26.0 (6.0–68.6) months after CIRT. The estimated two-year overall survival, local control, and progression-free survival rates after CIRT were 56.6%, 76.1%, and 29.0%, respectively. The median survival time of all patients was 29.6 months after CIRT and 34.5 months after the initial NAC. Conclusion: CIRT showed survival benefits for URPC even in the multiagent chemotherapy era.

Abstract:Background: Esophagogastric junctional squamous cell carcinoma (EJSCC) is quite rare among all gastric carcinoma, its potential resectable rate is low due to the late diagnosis. Recently, programmed death-1 (PD-1) blockade combined with anti-angiogenesis have gained accumulated clinical experiences in treating solid tumors. This is the first reported case with EJSCC who achieved a partial remission (PR) after neoadjuvant PD-1 blockade, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) inhibitor plus chemotherapy. Case Description: We present an EJSCC case treated with novel neoadjuvant treatment. A 64-year-old Chinese male had the symptom of chocking for 3 months. An enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan found a locally advanced, potentially unresectable esophagogastric junctional (EGJ) mass, and the preoperative immunohistochemistry result exhibited a highly positive programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression, so the patient received three courses of neoadjuvant camrelizumab (200 mg/day), apatinib (750 mg/day), albumin paclitaxel (200 mg/day) and nedaplatin (70 mg/day), he was well tolerant without any adverse event, and he underwent radical surgery after a significant tumor shrinkage. The patient recovered well after surgery, and he has received four cycles of camrelizumab and apatinib as maintenance treatment. There is no recurrence 7 months after surgery. Conclusions: PD-1 blockade, VEGFR-2 inhibitor plus chemotherapy is effective and safe for the patient with EJSCC.

Abstract:Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal of all malignancies. One of the reasons for the dismal prognosis is that most diagnoses are made when the disease is either locally advanced or metastatic. Recent advances in chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy (CRT) enable “conversion surgery” to be performed for selected patients with initially unresectable pancreatic cancer following favorable responses to preoperative treatment. Using FOLFIRINOX as preoperative treatment, the resection rate was reported as 6–44% of patients with locally advanced cancer and the prognosis of these patients was favorable. Even for metastasized cancer, recent reports show the effectiveness of conversion surgery, which has achieved 27–56 months of median overall survival. However, there are many unanswered questions about conversion surgery. The optimal regimen and duration of preoperative treatment remain unclear and there is still debate regarding the safety and effectiveness of vascular resection, which is often required for curative resection of locally advanced cancer. Accumulation of more data on conversion surgery is required to establish the safety and effectiveness of this treatment. In this review, we summarize the current status and unresolved issues about conversion surgery for initially unresectable pancreatic cancer.

Abstract:Background The efficacy and safety of conversion surgery (CS) after FOLFIRINOX or gemcitabine plus nab‐paclitaxel (GnP) chemotherapy in patients with initially unresectable pancreatic cancer (PC) remains unclear. Methods This multicenter retrospective cohort study enrolled patients, between 2014 and 2018, with initially locally advanced or metastatic PC who were considered candidates for CS following FOLFIRINOX or GnP chemotherapy. They were classified into surgery (207 patients [194 resection and 13 exploratory laparotomy only]) and continued chemotherapy (10 patients, control) groups. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS) from the day of diagnosis of potentially curative resection on imaging studies, with an expected hazard ratio (HR) of 0.7. Results OS in the surgery group was longer than that in the control group (HR, 0.47; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.24–0.93). The median OS was 34.4 (95% CI: 27.9–43.4) and 19.8 (95% CI: 14.9–31.1) months in the surgery and control groups, respectively. The Clavien‐Dindo grade ≥ IIIa postoperative complication and in‐hospital mortality rates were 19.6% and 0.5%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that preoperative chemotherapy duration was not associated with OS. Conclusions CS, following a favorable response to FOLFIRINOX or GnP chemotherapy, improved initially unresectable PC prognosis (specifically, OS), regardless of the chemotherapy duration.

Normalization of Tumor Markers and a Clear Resection Margin Affect Progression-Free Survival of Patients with Unresectable Pancreatic Cancer Who Have Undergone Conversion Surgery

Abstract:Background With the advent of intensive combination regimens, an increasing number of patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer (UPC) have regained the opportunity for surgery. We investigated the clinical benefits and prognostic factors of conversion surgery (CS) in UPC patients. Methods We retrospectively enrolled patients with UPC who had received CS following first-line systemic treatment in our center between 2014 to 2022. Treatment response, safety of the surgical procedure and clinicopathological data were collected. We analyzed the prognostic factors for postoperative survival among UPC patients who had CS. Results Sixty-seven patients with UPC were enrolled (53 with locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) and 14 with metastatic pancreatic cancer (MPC)). The duration of preoperative systemic treatment was 4.17 months for LAPC patients and 6.52 months for MPC patients. All patients experienced a partial response (PR) or had stable disease (SD) preoperatively according to imaging. Tumor resection was unsuccessful in four patients and, finally, R0 resection was obtained in 81% of cases. Downstaging was determined pathologically in 87% of cases; four patients achieved a complete pathological response. Median postoperative-progression-free survival (PO-PFS) was 9.77 months and postoperative overall survival (PO-OS) was 31.2 months. Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that the resection margin and postoperative changes in levels of tumor markers were significant prognostic factors for PO-PFS. No factors were associated significantly with PO-OS according to multivariate analyses. Conclusions CS is a promising strategy for improving the prognosis of UPC patients. The resection margin and postoperative change in levels of tumor markers are the most important prognostic factors for prolonged PFS. Multidisciplinary treatment in high-volume centers is strongly recommended. Prospective studies must be undertaken to resolve the various problems regarding optimal regimens, the duration of treatment, and detailed criteria for CS.
Conversion surgery for BRCA-mutated pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma with liver metastasis treated with platinum-based chemotherapy followed by olaparib

Abstract:Background: With recent dramatic developments in chemotherapy, attempts to incorporate surgery into the multidisciplinary treatment of unresectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma with metastasis (UR-M PDAC) have emerged. Maintenance therapy with olaparib after chemotherapy including a platinum-based regimen, which inhibits the poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) involved in DNA repair, was approved for UR-M PDAC with positive BRCA mutations. Case presentation: A 47-year-old male patient with a high carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) level was diagnosed with PDAC in the pancreatic tail. Staging laparoscopy revealed occult liver metastasis. Because BRCA2 mutation was confirmed, triple combination chemotherapy with SOXIRI (S-1/oxaliplatin/irinotecan) was introduced and continued for 16 weeks, followed by 14 weeks of olaparib. After that, CA19-9 was normalized, and no obvious liver metastases of any size could be seen on imaging studies during chemotherapy. Since staging laparoscopy after chemotherapy proved that the liver metastasis had disappeared, laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy was performed, and curative resection was completed. After adjuvant chemotherapy with olaparib for 12 months, the patient is alive 36 months from his initial diagnosis and 27 months postoperatively without recurrence. Conclusion: We report a case of PDAC with liver metastasis and BRCA mutation-positivity who underwent conversion surgery and achieved long-term survival after irinotecan-based chemotherapy followed by maintenance therapy with olaparib.

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of 3-month triplet induction chemotherapy (ICT) followed by concomitant chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC).Patients and Methods: Chemonaive patients with measurable, histologically confirmed LAPC were eligible. The ICT consisted of biweekly gemcitabine (800 mg/m(2)) infusion at a fixed dose rate (10 mg/m(2)/min), followed by 85 mg/m(2) oxaliplatin and 48-h infusion of 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin (3000/150 mg/m(2)) for 6 cycles. Patients without disease progression 4 weeks after ICT would receive weekly 400 mg/m(2) gemcitabine and 5040 cGy radiation in 28 fractions. After CCRT, patients were subjected for surgical intervention and/or maintenance chemotherapy until progression or intolerable toxicity.Results: Between December 2004 and August 2008, 50 patients were enrolled. The best responses after ICT were partial response (PR) in 9, stable disease in 26, and progressive disease or not evaluable in 15. Among the former 35 patients, 2 had disease progression before CCRT, and 3 declined to have CCRT. Of the 30 patients receiving CCRT, an additional 4 and 1 patient(s) achieved PR at the end of CCRT and during maintenance chemotherapy, respectively. On intent-to-treat analysis, the overall best response was PR in 14 patients and stable disease in 21. The overall response rate and disease control rate were 28% (95% confidence interval [CI], 16.2-42.5%) and 70%(95% CI, 44.4-99.2%), respectively. The median time to progression and overall survival of the intent-to-treat population was 9.3 (95% CI, 5.8-12.8) months and 14.5 (95% CI, 11.9-17.1) months, respectively. One-and two-year survival rates were 68% (95% CI, 55.1-80.9%) and 20.6%(95% CI, 8.7-32.5%), respectively. Neutropenia was the most common Grade 3-4 toxicity of both ICT and CCRT, with a frequency of 28% and 26.7%, respectively. Significant sensory neuropathy occurred in 9 patients (18%).Conclusion: Three months of triplet ICT followed by gemcitabine-based CCRT is feasible, moderately active, and associated with encouraging survival in patients with LAPC. Abstract:With the improvement of nonsurgical treatment in pancreatic cancer, the increasing accuracy of subclassification of anatomy, and the continuous refinement of surgical resection techniques, more and more locally advanced pancreatic cancer(LAPC) patients have the opportunity to undergo conversion surgery and achieve survival benefits,which has attracted the attention of scholars in this field. Despite the numerous prospective clinical studies conducted, there is still a lack of high-level evidence-based medical evidence in terms of conversion treatment strategies, efficacy evaluation, surgical timing and survival prognosis, and there are not yet specific quantitative standards and guiding principles for conversion treatment for these patients in clinical practice, and the indications for surgical resection rely more on the experience of each center or surgeon, lacking consistency. Therefore,the indicators for the evaluation of the efficacy of conversion treatment in patients with LAPC were summarized to reflect on the different modes of conversion treatment and clinical outcomes currently being explored, expecting to provide more accurate recommendations and guidance for the clinic.
Pancreaticoduodenectomy after neoadjuvant chemotherapy for gastric cancer invading the pancreatic head: A case report

Abstract:Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for advanced gastric cancer is rarely performed because of the high morbidity and mortality rates and low survival rate. However, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for advanced gastric cancer has improved, and chemotherapy combined with trastuzumab may have a preoperative tumor-reducing effect, especially for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive cases.We report a case of successful radical resection with PD after neoadjuvant S-1 plus oxaliplatin (SOX) and trastuzumab in a patient (66-year-old male) with advanced gastric cancer invading the pancreatic head. Initial esophagogastroduodenoscopy detected a type 3 advanced lesion located on the lower part of the stomach obstructing the pyloric ring. Computed tomography detected lymph node metastasis and tumor invasion to the pancreatic head without distant metastasis. Pathological findings revealed adenocarcinoma and HER2 positivity (immunohistochemical score of 3 +). We performed staging laparoscopy and confirmed no liver metastasis, no dissemination, negative lavage cytological findings, and immobility of the distal side of the stomach due to invasion to the pancreas. Laparoscopic gastrojejunostomy was performed at that time. One course of SOX and three courses of SOX plus trastuzumab were administered. Preoperative computed tomography showed partial response; therefore, PD was performed after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and pathological radical resection was achieved.We suggest that radical resection with PD after neoadjuvant chemotherapy plus trastuzumab is an option for locally advanced HER2-positive gastric cancer invading the pancreatic head in the absence of non-curative factors.

Abstract:Background Conversion therapy for initially unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (iuHCC) using lenvatinib combined with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus a PD-1 inhibitor (LTP) has achieved promising results. However, further comparative research is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of conversion surgery (CS) for iuHCC. Methods Data for 32 consecutive patients with iuHCC receiving CS and 419 consecutive patients with resectable HCC receiving initial surgery (IS) between November 2019 and September 2022 were collected retrospectively. After propensity score matching (PSM), 65 patients were selected. Results Before matching, the CS group had longer EFS (not reached vs. 12.9 months, P < 0.001) and similar OS (not reached vs. not reached, P = 0.510) compared with the IS group. Similar results for EFS ( P = 0.001) and OS ( P = 0.190) were obtained after matching. The multivariable Cox model (HR = 0.231, 95% CI: 0.105–0.504; P < 0.001) and subgroup analyses confirmed that CS could improve EFS. The CS group had significantly lower incidence of microvascular invasion (MVI) than the IS group (3.1% vs. 50.4%, P < 0.001). Moreover, the two groups had similar safety profiles. Conclusions CS is effective and safe for patients with iuHCC receiving LTP. LTP has the potential to reduce risk factors for postoperative recurrence, especially MVI, which may influence surgical decision-making.

Abstract:Transport of Brownian particles in a two-dimensional asymmetric tube is investigated by applying a polarized field. From the Brownian dynamics simulations, we find that the longitudinal current can be enhanced remarkably by applying a weakly transversal drive. Multiple current reversals can be realized by altering the driving frequency of the polarized field. By coupling the longitudinal and transversal forces together, one can control the particle transport flexibly.

Abstract:Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, presenting limited therapeutic options and a grim prognosis due to its aggressive nature. Despite ongoing exploration of various combination therapies, a standardized treatment approach after the first-line treatment progress remains elusive. This report details the cases of two patients with unresectable advanced PDAC who underwent distinct conversion treatment regimens involving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Remarkably, both patients became eligible for surgery following different anti-PD-1 antibody-based conversion therapies, ultimately achieving R0 resection. In essence, our findings highlight the efficacy of the anti-PD-1 antibody combined with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) regimen and chemotherapy alongside anti-PD-1 antibody as viable conversion therapies for preoperative advanced PDAC. Tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) analysis underscores the intratumoral and intertumoral heterogeneity observed in the postoperative immune landscape of surgical specimens. This insight contributes to a deeper understanding of the potential benefits of these conversion therapies in addressing the challenging landscape of advanced PDAC.

Abstract:Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive cancer with few therapeutic options. At present, surgical resection remains the only potential curative treatment for PDAC. However, only 15-20% of patients with PDAC are eligible for lesion resection. Total pancreatectomy (TP) and superior mesenteric-portal vein resection (SMPVR) may increase the rate of resection of PDCA, but the effect of this approach on improving long-term patient outcomes remains controversial. The present study investigated a case of PDAC in the pancreatic neck of a male patient. The patient underwent a TP, combined with SMPVR, for a margin-negative resection. Following an uneventful post-operative recovery, the patient received adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. The patient is currently alive at six years post-surgery, with a high quality of life. Given the clinical outcome of this patient, TP combined with SMPVR may provide PDAC patients with an opportunity for long-term survival. Therefore, patients with PDAC that is believed to be unresectable based on pre-operative assessment, may benefit from TP and SMPVR.
[Brucellosis-induced granulomatous non-puerperal mastitis--a case report].

Abstract:An acute manifestation of a chronic brucellosis localised to the female breast is described. A granulomatous mastitis was identified on histological examination. To our knowledge, this is the first reported occurrence of this phenomenon. It is pointed out that it is clinically difficult to distinguish this type of infection from an inflammatory carcinoma of the breast.
