Abstract:Silicon (Si) has aroused great interest as the most attractive anode candidate for energy-dense lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in the past decade because of its significantly high capacity and low discharge potential. However, the large volume change during cycling impedes its practical application, which is more serious in the case of high mass loading. Designing Si anode with high mass loading and high areal capacity by a simple, scalable, and environmentally friendly method is still a big challenge. Herein, we report in situ one-pot synthesis of Si/C composite, where Si nanoparticles are wrapped by graphene-like 2D carbon nanosheets. After 500 cycles at 420 mA g-1, the Si/C anode displays a gravimetric capacity of 881 mAh g-1 with 86.4% capacity being retained. More specially, a high areal capacity of 3.13 mAh cm-2 at 5.00 mg cm-2 after 100 cycles is achieved. This study demonstrates a novel route for the preparation of the Si/C composite with high material utilization and may expand the possibility of future design Si-based anode with high areal capacity for high energy LIBs.
In Situ Formation of Ionically Conductive Nanointerphase on Si Particles for Stable Battery Anode

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is a promising anode candidate for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity. Solar Si photovoltaic waste possesses good purity and high output. Using it as the raw material for battery anodes can synchronously solve the problem of solid waste pollution and enable high energy density LIBs. A critical issue impeding the practical application of Si is the undesirable side reactions at the electrolyte-particle interface and the resulting increase in impedance during cycling. Herein, a Si–P core shell structure with chemical bonding at the Si–P interface is fabricated through a simple mechanical alloying reaction between red P and solar Si photovoltaic waste. The P nanoshell with thickness within 15 nm converts to Li 3 P during the initial lithiation process and maintains its phase on cycling. The as-formed Li 3 P nanolayer functions as a stable, ionically conductive protective layer that reduces the direct contact between Si and electrolytes, and thus suppresses undesired side reactions. The Si–P nanocomposite exhibits stable electrochemical cycling with a high reversible capacity of 1,178 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1,200 mA g −1 , as well as excellent rate capability (912 mAh g −1 at 2 C). With 15 wt% addition to graphite, a graphite/Si–P hybrid electrode shows a high overall reversible specific capacity of 447 mAh g −1 and 88.3% capacity retention after 100 cycles at high areal capacity of 2.64 mAh cm −2 at 100 mA g −1 , indicating its promise as a drop-in anode in practical LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon monoxide (SiO) is a promising anode material for thenext-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its higher capacity thangraphite and better cycle life than pure silicon. However, the issues ofvolume changes, low mass loading, and poor conductivity still exist. In thisstudy, an economic battery manufacturing technique is developed topromote the performance of commercial SiO/C-based batteries. A noveltriblock copolymer binder was synthesized and used to relieve the volumechanges and improve ion transportation. Copper nanowires were adopted inthe anode material to improve electrical conductivity. A high mass loadinganode with a laminated conductive structure was fabricated by spraying alayer upon layer. The synthesized SiO/C exhibits a high specific capacityretention of 606 mA h g-1after 200 cycles at a high areal mass loading of10.26 mg cm-2. Furthermore, under a current density of 1 C (1255 mA g-1),it delivers a reversible rate capacity of 620 mA h g-1. This novel design pavesa new way to fabricate high-performance SiO-based anodes for commercial LIB applications.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is considered a high-capacity anode material with potential for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, the commercial application of Si anode is seriously hindered by huge volume variation (>300%) and limited Li+ diffusion ability. Herein, lithium metasilicate (LS), a novel inorganic binder, was innovatively developed to accommodate these challenges. Favorable compatibility is observed between the LS binder and Si nanoparticles (SiNPs) due to the existence of Si element within the LS skeleton. The interaction of the LS binder and SiNPs leads to a strong adhesion effect, enhancing the cycling stability of Si anode. The Si electrode with the LS binder presented an average discharge capacity of 2123 mAh/g at 0.84 A/g after 100 cycles. Furthermore, the presence of the Li+ transport channel within the LS binder enhances Li+ diffusion ability within Si anode. As a result, the average discharge capacity reaches 663 mAh/g at 8.4 A/g. This work thus explored new inorganic binder design approaches for Si anode, contributing to the advancement of high-performance Si anode.

Abstract:Bi2S3 is investigated as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity. However, the poor rate performance and fast capacity decay induced by the huge volume change during the lithiation/delithiation process, which seriously hinder the practical application in LIBs. Herein, Bi2S3@N-doped carbon (Bi2S3@NC) nanospheres with strong Bi-C covalent bond are constructed and application in LIBs, which exhibit outstanding rate performance and excellent long-term cycling stability. The high conductivity of N-doped carbon layer and strong Bi-C covalent bond can significantly enhance the electrochemical kinetics, as well as maintain the structural stability during cycling process. Benefiting from these advantages, the Bi2S3@NC nanospheres provide excellent rate performance (412 mA h g−1 at 5.0 A g−1), and outstanding long-term cycling stability (a high reversible capacity of 510 mA h g−1 is achieved after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g−1). Furthermore, the assembled Bi2S3@NC//LiFePO4@C full cell delivers high capacity of 341 mA h g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, and outstanding cycle performance (206 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles), demonstrating great potential for practical application in high performance LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon-based materials have been considered as the promising anode candidates for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their widespread application is unfortunately restricted by severe volume variations during cycling and poor electronic conductivity. To overcome these challenges, we showcase an innovative design of dual core−shell structured Si-based nanocomposites working as anode for LIBs with boosted performance, where the Si nanoparticle core is tightly wrapped by a mixed lithium phosphate (Li 3 PO 4 /Li 4 P 2 O 7 ) shell and void-preserving F-doped carbon shell (denoted as @). For such novel structured composite, the inner L 3 PO 4 /Li 4 P 2 O 7 layer acting as artificial solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and the outer void-preserving F-doped C can effectively tolerate the volume changes while ensuring the stability of SEI layer, facilitate the Li + migration and electron transfer, and reinforce the structural stability during cycling. Consequently, the as-fabricated @ anode exhibits a reversible capacity of 569 mA h g -1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g -1 , and an exceptional long-term cycling stability with 76% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 4.0 A g −1 can be achieved. Additionally, the full cell assembled with @ anode and LiFePO 4 cathode also demonstrates a good cycling performance with 117 mA h g -1 at 1C for over 150 cycles with 92% capacity retention, suggesting the potentiality for practical application. Furthermore, the mechanisms of the enhanced structural stability of @ anode are carefully elaborated by substantial in situ / ex situ microscopic techniques and electrochemical tests. It is expected that our findings in this work can provide guiding significance for improving the cycling performance of Si-based composite anodes toward high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon (Si), have been considered as promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), due to its high theoretical specific capacity of 4200 mAh g−1. However, the poor electrical conductivity and large volume change during lithiation/delithiation process, resulting in poor cycling stability, and seriously hindered the practical application in LIBs. Herein, a multiple Si/FexSiy@NC/CNTs composite is synthesized and investigated as advanced anode materials for LIBs via a simple one-step method. Such multiple Si/FexSiy@NC/CNTs composite has several merits including the FexSiy can not only accommodate the huge volume change of Si nanoparticles, but also enhance the conductivity upon discharge/charge process. Furthermore, the in-situ growth CNTs may help establish a long-range conductivity, and the Nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) layer can further improve the conductivity of Si, as well as inhibit the direct contract between electrolyte and Si during cycling process. Accordingly, the Si/FexSiy@NC/CNTs-1 exhibits excellent cycling stability (a high capacity of 994.4 mAh g−1 is maintained at 1.0 A g−1 after 600cycles) and outstanding rate capability (a suitable capacity of 441.7 mAh g−1 was obtained even at 5.0 A g−1). Moreover, the assembled full cell can achieve a capacity of 141.4 mAh g−1 after 65 cycles at 1.0C, exhibiting outstanding cycling stability. This work provides a prospective way for the commercial production of high-performance Si-based anode materials for LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon has become the most promising anode material for industrial application to replace the currently utilized graphite because of its large capacity and abundant reserves. However, its poor electronic conductivity and slow Li-ionic diffusion capability along with severe volume expansion impede its high-rate performace. To resolve these issues, we develop a ternary BiSbSi compound with a layered lattice, which presents significantly improved reaction kinetics of 300 mA h g−1 at 20 A g−1 enabled by faster electronic conduction and lithium ion diffusion and simultaneously reduce the volume variation, thus leading to longer cycling stability of remaining 561 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g−1, compared with Si counterparts. Broadly the ternary layered Si-based anodes hold great promises to be applied in the near future.

Abstract:Owing to highly theoretical capacity of 3579 mAh/g for lithium-ion storage at ambient temperature, silicon (Si) becomes a promising anode material of high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the large volume change (∼300 %) during lithiation/delithiation and low conductivity of Si are challenging the commercial developments of LIBs with Si anode. Herein, a sandwich structure anode that Si nanoparticles sandwiched between carbon nanotube (CNT) and silicon carbide (SiC) has been successfully constructed by acetylene chemical vapor deposition and magnesiothermic reduction reaction technology. The SiC acts as a stiff layer to inhibit the volumetric stress from Si and the inner graphited CNT plays as the matrix to cushion the volumetric stress and as the conductor to transfer electrons. Moreover, the combination of SiC and CNT can relax the surface stress of carbonaceous interface to synergistically prevent the integrated structure from the degradation to avoid the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) reorganization. In addition, the SiC (1 1 1) surface has a strong ability to adsorb fluoroethylene carbonate molecule to further stabilize the SEI. Consequently, the CNT/SiNPs/SiC anode can stably supply the capacity of 1127.2 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g with a 99.6 % capacity retention rate after 200 cycles and an excellent rate capability of 745.5 mAh/g at 4.0 A/g and 85.5 % capacity retention rate after 1000 cycles. The present study could give a guide to develop the functional Si anode through designing a multi-interface with heterostructures.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) anode is the most promising alternative for next generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to large theoretical capacity, low working voltage and abundant natural resources. However, tremendous volume change of Si during the (de)lithiation processes causes repetitive formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers, loss of electrical contact and electrodes pulverization, limiting its commercial application. Herein, we fabricate an interconnected hollow Si-C nanospheres/graphite composite via a facile and scalable approach. Notably, hollow Si-C nanospheres and graphite are homogeneously combined by using the surfactants as surface modifiers of graphite and introducing carbon dioxide (CO2) into magnesiothermic reduction reaction, resulting in the enhanced compatibility between hollow Si-C nanospheres and graphite, and the well-established electrical conductive network. The resultant Si-C nanospheres/graphite composite anode with carbon content of 59 wt% delivers a large reversible specific capacity of 662 mAh g−1 and a high capacity retention of 65.7% at 0.5 A g−1 after 200 cycles. Such excellent rate performance and superior cycling performance are attributed to high electrical conductivity and buffering effect of graphite, superior compatibility between hollow Si-C spheres and graphite, uniform distribution of both Si-C nanospheres with a unique hollow architecture and graphite flakes inside the composites and well-established interconnected electrical conductive carbon networks, which can effectively alleviate Si volume expansion and maintain good electrical contact during cycling. This strategy provides insights into designing Si-based anodes for practical LIBs.

High-performance Si-Containing anode materials in lithium-ion batteries: A superstructure of Si@Co–NC composite works effectively

Abstract:To mitigate the massive volume expansion of Si-based anode during the charge/discharge cycles, we synthesized a superstructure of composite via the carbonization of zeolite imidazolate frameworks incorporated with Si nanoparticles. The is comprised of Si-nanoparticle core and N-doped/Co-incorporated carbon shell, and there is void space between the core and the shell. When using as anode material for LIBs, displayed a super performance with a charge/discharge capacity of 191.6/191.4 mAh g-1 and a coulombic efficiency of 100.1% at 1000 mA g-1 after 3000 cycles, and the capacity loss rate is 0.022% per cycle only. The excellent electrochemical property of is because its electronic conductivity is enhanced by doping the carbon shell with N atoms and by incorporating with Co particles, and the pathway of lithium ions transmission is shortened by the hollow structure and abundant mesopores in the carbon shell. Also, the volume expansion of Si nanoparticles is well accommodated in the void space and suppressed by the carbon host matrix. This work shows that, through designing a superstructure for the anode materials, we can synergistically reduce the work function and introduce the confinement effect, thus significantly enhancing the anode materials' electrochemical performance in LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is served as next generation prospective anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) on account of the high theoretical capacity (about 4200 mAh g(-1)), suitable working voltage, and abundant resources. Nevertheless, the structural collapse during the repeated charge-discharge process and lower electrical conductivity severely hinder the commercial application of the Si anode. Combining with carbon components is an effective and feasible way to address these drawbacks. Herein, we design and construct a composite architecture based on nano Si embedded into three-dimensional porous N-doped carbon (p-NC) and then combine with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via NaCl template-assisted in-situ pyrolysis strategy. The results show that the porous structure of the p-NC has a binding effect on Si nanoparticles, which can effectively relieve the volume variation, maintain structural stability, and increase the ion/electron diffusion rate. And the CNTs further ensure rapid lithium ion (Li+) diffusion and electron transfer. Therefore, the introduction of p-NC and CNTs allows the Si anode to greatly improve the electrochemical performance of lithium storage. The Si/p-NC/CNTs shows a satisfactory initial discharge of 1510.9 mAh g(-1) at 0.3 A g(-1), and it can still maintain a high capacity of 1126.3 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles.
Bi Nanoparticles in Situ Encapsulated by Carbon Film As High-Performance Anode Materials for Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:Bismuth (Bi) has indeed inspired great interests in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the high capacity, but was still limited by the low electrical conductivity and large volume variation. Herein, a composite material based on Bi nanoparticles in situ encapsulated by carbon film (Bi@CF) is prepared successfully through a facile metal-organic framework (MOF)-engaged approach. As anode materials for LIBs, the Bi@CF composites achieved high reversible capacities of 705 and 538 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 and 0.5 A g(-1) after 200 cycles, and long cycling performance with a stable capacity of 306 mAh g(-1) at 1.0 A g(-1) even after 900 cycles. In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements clearly revealed the conversion between Bi and Li3Bi during the alloying/dealloying process, confirming the good electrochemical reversibility of Bi@CF for Li-storage. The reaction kinetics of this Bi@CF composite was further studied by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT). This work may provide an inspiration for the elaborate design and facile preparation of alloy-type anode materials for high-performance rechargeable batteries. Cu and Ni Co-Doped Porous Si Nanowire Networks as High-Performance Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Due to its extremely high theoretical mass specific capacity, silicon is considered to be the most promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, serious volume expansion and poor conductivity limit its commercial application. Herein, dealloying treatments of spray dryed Al-Si-Cu-Ni particles are performed to obtain a Cu/Ni co-doped Si-based anode material with a porous nanowire network structure. The porous structure enables the material to adapt to the volume changes in the cycle process. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the co-doping of Cu and Ni can improve the capture ability towards Li, which can accelerate the electron migration rate of the material. Based on the above advantages, the as-prepared material presents excellent electrochemical performance, delivering a reversible capacity of 1092.4 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g−1. Even after 500 cycles, it still retains 818.7 mAh g−1 at 500 mA g−1. This study is expected to provide ideas for the preparation and optimization of Si-based anodes with good electrochemical performance.

High-performance Self-Organized Si Nanocomposite Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon is being investigated extensively as an anodic material for next-generation lithium ion batteries for portable energy storage and electric vehicles. However, the large changes in volume during cycling lead to the breakdown of the conductive network in Si anodes and the formation of an unstable solid-electrolyte interface, resulting in capacity fading. Here, we demonstrate nanoparticles with a Si@Mn22.6Si5.4C4@C double-shell structure and the formation of self-organized Si-Mn-C nanocomposite anodes during the lithiation/delithiation process. The anode consists of amorphous Si particles less than 10 nm in diameter and separated by an interconnected conductive/buffer network, which exhibits excellent charge transfer kinetics and charge/discharge performances. A stable specific capacity of 1100 mAhg(-1) at 100 m.A.g(-1) and a coulombic efficiency of 99.2% after 30 cycles are achieved. Additionally, a rate capacity of 343 mAh.g(-1) and a coulombic efficiency of 99.4% at 12000 mA.g(-1) are also attainable. Owing to its simplicity and applicability, this strategy for improving electrode performance paves a way for the development of high-performance Si-based anodic materials for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is a promising anode material for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high capacity. However, the large volumetric expansion, poor ion conductivity and unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) lead to rapid capacity fading and low rate performance. Herein, we report Si nitride (SiN) comprising stoichiometric Si3N4 and Li-active anazotic SiN x coated porous Si (p-Si@SiN) for high-performance anodes in LIBs. The ant-nest-like porous Si consisting of 3D interconnected Si nanoligaments and bicontinuous nanopores prevents pulverization and accommodates volume expansion during cycling. The Si3N4 offers mechanically protective coating to endow highly structural integrity and inhibit superfluous formation of SEI. The fast ion conducting Li3N generated in situ from lithiation of active SiN x facilitates Li ion transport. Consequently, the p-Si@SiN anode has appealing electrochemical properties such as a high capacity of 2180 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 with 84% capacity retention after 200 cycles and excellent rate capacity with discharge capacity of 721 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 5.0 A g−1. This work provides insights into the rational design of active/inactive nanocoating on Si-based anode materials for fast-charging and highly stable LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon based anode material is regarded as a promising candidate for Lithium ionic batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical specific capacity. Nevertheless, the capacity degradation triggered by high volume expansion has seriously hindered its application in LIBs. Herein, a novel structure of core-shell structured 3 Si-Cu nanoparticles coated by N-doped carbon ( 3 ) is designed and synthesized via a two-step thermal reduction process. In this design, the copper shell and N-doped carbon can significantly limit and accommodate the volume change of Si during cycling. The in-situ formation of Cu 3 Si at the interface further improves the structural stability. The doping of N in carbon is conducive to the rapid transmission of electrons and ions as well as optimizes the electrochemical performance of the material. Therefore, the optimized 3 nanocomposite anode shows prominent rate performance and delivers a reversible capacity of 1105.5 mAh g -1 after 100 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g -1 , which exhibits the great potential of the nanocomposite as high-performance LIBs anode material.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is a promising anode candidate for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but it suffers from poor electronic conductivity and dramatic volume variation during cycling, which poses a critical challenge for stable battery operation. To mitigate these issues simultaneously, we propose a "double carbon synergistic encapsulation" strategy, namely thin carbon shell and nitrogen/phosphorus co-doped two-dimensional (2D) carbon sheet dual encapsulate Si nanoparticles (denoted as 2D NPC/C@Si). This double carbon structure can serve as a conductive medium and buffer matrix to accommodate the volume expansion of Si nanoparticles and enable fast electron/ion transport, which promotes the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase film during cycling. Through structural advantages, the resulting 2D NPC/C@Si electrode demonstrates a high reversible capacity of 592 mAh·g−1 at 0.2 A·g−1 with 90.5% excellent capacity retention after 100 cycles, outstanding rate capability (148 mAh·g−1 at 8 A·g−1), and superior long-term cycling stability (326 mAh·g−1 at 1 A·g−1 for 500 cycles, 86% capacity retention). Our findings elucidate the development of high-performance Si@C composite anodes for advanced LIBs.

Abstract:AbstractSilicon is considered the most promising material for anodes for the development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and natural abundance. However, the poor intrinsic conductivity and serious volume changes severely restrain the practical application. To address these issues, combining Si with carbon is confirmed as an effective strategy, but still suffers from uneven combination, poor interfacial contact and inferior electrochemical performance. Herein, Si@Fe3O4@C composites were synthesized by facile scalable ball-milling of nanosilicon, mesophase carbon microspheres (MCMB) and iron scurf from a stainless steel reactor. As compared to Si/C, the Si@Fe3O4@C composites exhibit much improved specific capacity, cycling stability and rate performance. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles not only help to boost the conductivity of Si but also accommodate their volume expansion during cycling. Consequently, the Si@Fe3O4@C anode delivers a reversible capacity of 1009 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 after 110 cycles and 780.8 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 500 cycles. The method shows the merits of low cost, facile operation and easy industrial production for the synthesis of high-capacity Si anodes.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is considered as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its ultrahigh capacity (3579 mA h g–1, Li15Si4). However, the irreversible huge volume change during cycling and poor conductivity hinder its practical application. Nanoscale shortens electron and ion transport paths and provides more active sites. To solve these problems, yolk–shell-like N-doped carbon-coated Si nanoparticles (Si@void@NC) were designed and prepared by a simple solution coating method and a high-temperature calcination process. Si@void@NC exhibits two advantages: First, the prepared hollow structure is favorable for buffering the volume expansion. Second, the N-doped carbon layer coating on Si can improve the conductivity and reduce the volume change during cycling. The as-prepared sample exhibits 697.7 mA h g–1 at 0.2 A g–1 after 100 cycles and a capacity retention of 475.1 mA h g–1 at 0.5 A g–1 after 400 cycles. This strategy of designation and preparation of yolk–shell-like N-doped carbon-coated Si nanoparticles provides a way to construct ideal Si-based composite materials for LIBs.
