Abstract:Objective To systematically review the effects of mobile phone management applications (APP) on biological and biochemical parameters in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Methods We electronically searched databases including PubMed,EMbase,The Cochrane Library,Web of Science,CINAHL,PsycINFO,WanFang Data,CBM,CNKI for randomized controlled trials compared mobile phone APP as interventions for managing T2DM with traditional methods from inception to September 30th 2016.Two researchers independently screened literature,extracted data and assessed the risk of bias of included studies.Then,meta-analysis was conducted using Stata 12.0 software.Results A total of 10 studies including 1 030 participants (563 in the App group and 467 in the traditional group) were included.The results of meta-analysis showed that the mobile phone APP-based interventions group were superior to the control group in HbAlc (MD=-0.43,95％ CI-0.65 to-0.22,P＜0.001),systolic blood pressure (MD=-2.53,95％ CI-4.89 to-0.17,P＜0.05),triglyceride (SMD=-0.24,95％ CI-0.42 to-0.06,P＜0.05) and waist circumference (MD=-1.57,95％ CI-2.65 to-0.48,P＜0.05).No significant different were found on any other related results between two groups.Conclusion Mobile phone APP aimed at diabetes management can improve HbA1c,systolic blood pressure,triglyceride,and waist circumference for patients with T2DM.Due to the limited quality and quantity of the included studies,the above conclusions are needed more high quality studies to verify.

Abstract:Background and aims Among the large number of studies on smartphone addiction, only a few randomized controlled trials on exercise and psychological interventions for smartphone addiction by university students have been published. This study aims to systematically investigate the impact of exercise and psychological interventions on smartphone addiction among university students. Methods The PRISMA guidelines were adopted for this systematic literature review. Prominent academic databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and PsycINFO were searched to find eligible studies published before Aug 2021. The overall quality of the articles was checked using the “QualSyst” tool by Kmet et al. Results From among 600 papers, 23 met the inclusion criteria and were incorporated into our systematic review. All of the studies were randomized controlled trials. The following thematic areas emerged as a result of the content analysis: study selection and design, as well as study characteristics (participants, intervention, comparisons, and outcomes). Discussion and conclusion The literature on exercise and psychological interventions for smartphone addiction is scarce. There is a need to introduce new interventions and to validate the effectiveness of combined interventions. Our findings suggest that exercise and psychological interventions may help to reduce smartphone addiction. This combination was more effective compare to exercise or psychological intervention on mental health and addiction among university students. Future research should combine exercise and psychological interventions, focusing on university students, especially females, who are vulnerable to smartphone addiction. Further studies should focus on the cross-section of neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, and sports science to provide combined interventions in physiological and psychological direction. Effects of exercise interventions on Internet addiction among college students: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract:Background: Internet addiction (IA) has gradually emerged as a significant public health concern, especially among college students. This study aims to systematically investigate and quantitatively analyze the effects of exercise interventions on IA among college students and provides an objective assessment of the available evidence. For this study, IA is defined as compulsive, excessive Internet use, including via mobile phones, that disrupts daily life and causes significant distress, and we combine Internet addiction and mobile phone addiction in our analysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. Methods: The search for eligible studies was conducted from inception until May 2024 across various databases including Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wan Fang. The risk of bias within the included studies was assessed utilizing the Cochrane Collaboration's risk of bias tool, while methodological quality was evaluated using the modified Jadad Scale. Findings: A meta-analysis of 19 pairwise comparisons showed that exercise interventions significantly reduced the total IA scores (g = -1.25). Furthermore, the interventions resulted in significant reductions in anxiety (g = -1.30), loneliness (g = -1.57), stress (g = -0.77), inadequacy (g = -1.77), mental health (g = -1.08), fatigue (g = -0.66), and depression (g = -0.56). Conclusions: Exercise interventions showed efficacy in decreasing levels of IA and alleviating psychological symptoms in college students with IA. The optimal types of exercise for college students suffering from IA are open motor skill and the combination of both open and closed skill. However, future work is needed given the limited randomized controlled trials and the high heterogeneity of the included studies.
Effect of an Intervention Based on the Health Action Process Approach Model on Mobile Phone Addiction in Adolescents

Abstract:Background: Mobile phone addiction in adolescents is a serious social problem that not only negatively affects physical and mental health but also hinders social stability and development. However, studies on interventions for mobile phone addiction in adolescents are still few. Therefore, exploring interventions for mobile phone addiction in adolescents and scrutinizing the corresponding mechanism of action are crucial. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 800 adolescents who were recruited using random sampling from communities in Hubei Province, China in 2023, and 232 of them were identified to have mobile phone addiction. Then, they were randomly divided into the experiment group, comprising 119 members, and the control group, composed of 113 members. The experiment group was given a 3-month intervention under the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) model, whereas the control group was given no intervention. Results: This intervention significantly reduced the level of mobile phone addiction in adolescents (P<0.05). It also significantly improved self-efficacy in adolescents with mobile phone addiction (P<0.05). The intervention can significantly improved life satisfaction in adolescents with mobile phone addiction (P<0.05). Self-efficacy and life satisfaction had a chain mediating effect (P<0.001). Conclusion: The HAPA model is conducive to alleviating mobile phone addiction. It further enhances the intervention effect by improving self-efficacy and life satisfaction in adolescents.

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewProblematic mobile phone use (PMPU) has become a public health issue. This study sought to investigate the effects of psychological interventions (PI) or exercise interventions (EI) for PMPU through a systematic review and meta-analysis. A literature search of ten databases was executed from January 2001 to August 2022. A total of 26 eligible RCTs (31 pairwise comparisons) were finally included. Posttreatment means and SDs were compared between intervention and control groups, and pooled effect sizes were calculated. This study is registered on PROSPERO, number CRD42022296418.Recent findingsA meta-analysis of 31 pairwise comparisons showed that interventions significantly reduced the total PMPU scores (SMD = − 1.00), with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 72.8%). Twenty-three of these trials reported PI (SMD = − 0.99) and the other eight reported EI (SMD = − 1.02); the change in total PMPU scores was not significantly different between PI and EI (P = 0.787). Among them, the largest effect sizes were found for mindfulness therapy (MT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and general aerobic exercise (GAE) (MT: SMD = − 1.50; CBT: SMD = − 1.37; GAE: SMD = − 1.32). In addition, interventions also reduced the MPUT (SMD = − 0.91), anxiety (SMD = − 1.63), loneliness (SMD = − 1.10), stress (SMD = − 0.59), and depression (SMD = − 0.31), and increased mindful attention (SMD = 1.07) and inadequacy (SMD = 1.12).SummaryThis is the first meta-analysis on PI or EI for PMPU. The results showed that PI or EI was equally effective in reducing PMPU. However, more rigorous trials are needed to explore intervention criteria.

Abstract:Background Increasing physical activity (PA) levels in adolescents aged 12 to 18 years is associated with prevention of unhealthy weight gain and improvement in cardiovascular fitness. The widespread availability of mobile health (mHealth) and wearable devices offers self-monitoring and motivational features for increasing PA levels and improving adherence to exercise programs. Objective The aim of this scoping review was to identify the efficacy or effectiveness of mHealth intervention strategies for facilitating PA among adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. Methods We conducted a systematic search for peer-reviewed studies published between 2008 and 2018 in the following electronic databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, PsychINFO, or SportDiscus. The search terms used included mHealth or “mobile health” or apps, “physical activity” or exercise, children or adolescents or teens or “young adults” or kids, and efficacy or effectiveness. Articles published outside of the date range (July 2008 to October 2018) and non-English articles were removed before abstract review. Three reviewers assessed all abstracts against the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Any uncertainties or differences in opinion were discussed as a group. The inclusion criteria were that the studies should (1) have an mHealth component, (2) target participants aged between 12 and 18 years, (3) have results on efficacy or effectiveness, and (4) assess PA-related outcomes. Reviews, abstracts only, protocols without results, and short message service text messaging–only interventions were excluded. We also extracted potentially relevant papers from reviews. At least 2 reviewers examined all full articles for fit with the criteria and extracted data for analysis. Data extracted from selected studies included study population, study type, components of PA intervention, and PA outcome results. Results Overall, 126 articles were initially identified. Reviewers pulled 18 additional articles from excluded review papers. Only 18 articles were passed onto full review, and 16 were kept for analysis. The included studies differed in the sizes of the study populations (11-607 participants), locations of the study sites (7 countries), study setting, and study design. Overall, 5 mHealth intervention categories were identified: website, website+wearable, app, wearable+app, and website+wearable+app. The most common measures reported were subjective weekly PA (4/13) and objective daily moderate-to-vigorous PA (5/13) of the 19 different PA outcomes assessed. Furthermore, 5 of 13 studies with a control or comparison group showed a significant improvement in PA outcomes between the intervention group and the control or comparison group. Of those 5 studies, 3 permitted isolation of mHealth intervention components in the analysis. Conclusions PA outcomes for adolescents improved over time through mHealth intervention use; however, the lack of consistency in chosen PA outcome measures, paucity of significant outcomes via between-group analyses, and the various study designs that prevent separating the effects of intervention components calls into question their true effect.
The strategies of exercise intervention for adolescent depression: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract:Purpose This study aimed to investigate the effect of exercise intervention, and analyze exercise intervention strategies for adolescent depression through a meta-analysis of RCTs. Methods Accordance to PRISMA guidelines, PubMed, Medline, EBSCO, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, PsycINFO, ProQuest, and CNKI were searched for eligible records. Peer-reviewed studies were included if they met the following criteria: population (mean age of 10–18 years), intervention (physical activity, sport, or exercise), and outcomes (depression, adherence, ITT, dropout, adverse events, follow-up report). The protocol of this systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022321683). Effect sizes calculations and methodological quality of exercise intervention (TESTEX scale) were carried out. The certainty of evidence was assessed by GRADE framework. Results Thirteen randomized controlled trials were eligible for this review, which comprised a total of 433 adolescents. Compared with the control treatment, the effect of exercise on adolescent depression was moderate (SMD = −0.65, 95%CI: −1.03 to −0.27, p < 0.01). Heterogeneity was substantial ( T 2 = 0.30, I 2 = 67%, p < 0.01). The moderating effect analysis showed that exercise intervention characteristics (organization form, exercise frequency, exercise intensity, exercise type, and single exercise session duration) of included studies varied greatly revealing multiple factors that may impact the antidepressant effect of exercise on adolescent depression ( I 2 > 50%, p < 0.05). Three studies show that the positive effect of exercise on reducing depression in adolescents remained 40 weeks after the intervention. Moreover, owing to the included studies contained methodological limitations, the certainty of evidence was reduced to moderate level. Conclusion This study shows that exercise intervention has a moderate and sustained positive effect on adolescent depression. Our results recommended that adolescents with depression undertake moderate to high intensity group mixed exercise for more than 12 weeks, 20 to 60 min/time, more than 3 times/week. Additionally, our study also shows that the antidepressant effects remained for a long time after the end of exercise interventions. However, following the GRADE framework, we rated the certainty of evidence the primary meta-analysis as moderate evidence due to some limitations of included studies. Therefore, rigorous studies are still needed to verify the results. The Influence of Acute Aerobic Exercise on Craving Degree for University Students with Mobile Phone Dependency: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:These days, mobile phone dependency (MPD) has become one of the most imperative and impressive puzzles in the area of behavioral addictions and public health across the world, especially the individuals with MPD that might frequently crave using mobile phones themselves. The target of the current study was to determine whether moderate-intensity aerobic exercise could reduce the craving degree for mobile phones for university students with MPD by a randomized, controlled trial. Sixty Chinese undergraduates, including 30 male and 30 female students aged from 18 to 22 years (20.08 ± 1.94 years) with MPD were recruited and then randomly assigned to the exercise group (n = 30) or the control group (n = 30) with even numbers by gender and major. Participants in the exercise group were required to perform an acute moderate-intensity treadmill exercise lasting for 30 min at 45−68% heart rate reserve (HRR) with background music, while the control group were only asked to listen to the same music for 40 min without any exercise. Sport watches were employed to monitor their heart rate (HR), and the exercise group was also obliged to report their rating of perceived exertion (RPE). After completing the experimental task, a visual analog scale (VAS) was used to evaluate their craving degree for mobile phones, and an independent samples t-test was computed to reveal the difference in the scores of craving degree for mobile phones between the two groups. The results showed that the VAS score for the exercise group (3.77 ± 1.36) was significantly lower (p < 0.001) than that of the control group (6.11 ± 1.39). The findings suggested that acute moderate-intensity aerobic exercise could be an effective and reliable means to help deal with the issue of mobile phones craving for the undergraduates with MPD, and more longitudinal intervention studies and control trial designs should be conducted in the near future to further test the long-term effects of this exercise.
Effectiveness of sports intervention: A meta-analysis of the effects of different interventions on adolescent internet addiction

Abstract:Background: To evaluate the effects of different interventions on adolescent internet addiction, a meta-analysis and network meta-analysis were performed to determine the possible intervention effects of these interventions. Methods: Computer searches of the China National Knowledge Network, Wanfang, VIP, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, and Cochrane Library databases were performed. The relevant randomized controlled trials were designed to assess the effects of interventions on adolescent internet addiction. The retrieval period ranged from the establishment of the database to January 31, 2024. Literature screening, data extraction, and bias risk assessment were carried out independently by two researchers. CMA 3.3, Stata 17.0 software and Review Manager 5.3 were used for the data analysis. Results: A total of 89 studies with 6876 samples were included. A traditional meta-analysis of 51 single interventions and controlled studies revealed that sports intervention, cognitive behavior therapy, family therapy, mindfulness intervention, attention bias training and group counseling significantly improved adolescent Internet addiction [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -1.75, 95 % CI (-2.07, -1.44), p < 0.01; I2 = 94 %] compared to no-treatment groups. A network meta-analysis showed that combined intervention (Sucra = 93.5) had the highest probability of being the best intervention for adolescent Internet addiction, and acupuncture interventions showed the most promise as a single intervention modality; however, due to the limited number of studies, we believe that sports intervention could be the most appropriate single intervention. Discussion: The evidence provided by existing studies shows that compared with other single interventions, combined interventions have the greatest effect on adolescent IA, and sports may be the best single intervention. However, because of the limitations of sample size and quality of individual studies, the strength of the evidence still needs to be further verified by additional standardized and high-quality studies.

Abstract:Mutations within the leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene represent the most common cause of Mendelian forms of Parkinson's disease, among autosomal dominant cases. Its gene product, LRRK2, is a large multidomain protein that belongs to the Roco protein family exhibiting GTPase and kinase activity, with the latter activity increased by pathogenic mutations. To allow rational drug design against LRRK2 and to understand the cross-regulation of the G- and the kinase domain at a molecular level, it is key to solve the three-dimensional structure of the protein. We review here our recent successful approach to build the first structural model of dimeric LRRK2 by an integrative modeling approach.
Could physical activity alleviate smartphone addiction in university students? A systematic literature review

Abstract:Objectives: Recently, the widespread surge in smartphone addiction (SA) has raised major global health concerns and prompted researchers to scrutinize the inverse relationship between physical activity (PA) and the risk of SA. This systematic literature review aims to synthesize the empirical research on the relationship between PA and SA among university students representing the most affected age group. Methods: Adopting the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, we explored five databases: PubMed, Social Sciences Research Network (SSRN), Oxford Research Archive, Journal Storage (JSTOR), and Google Scholar. We used the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tools (MMAT) for quality assessment. Results: Thirty-one studies met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-eight of them were cross-sectional, and three were experimental. The 31 studies emerged from 12 countries, most stemming (45.16%) from China. Their findings suggest an inverse relationship between PA and SA in the examined population. However, the direct relationship may be weak based on correlational studies, while intervention research yields noteworthy effects. Still, other factors like resilience may mediate the studied relationship. Methodological concerns render the results of correlational studies tentative. Conclusions: Regular PA could be a promising preventive measure for SA. Future work should use objective PA indices in longitudinal research designs while assessing the type and duration of smartphone applications used via device meters. In correlational studies, interviews should follow up on the high SA risk or too much device use. In conclusion, moderate evidence indicates that PA can reduce SA among university students.
Intervention Effect of Mindfulness-Based Mental Health Education Therapy on Adolescents Mobile Phone Addiction and Cognitive Tendency

Abstract:Background: Teenagers are more prone to mobile phone addiction than other age groups due to their lack of self-control. This addiction to mobile phones severely affects their physical and mental health, causing irreversible harm as they grow older. As such, exploring suitable psychotherapy for their physical and mental development needs is essential, in ways that effectively change teenagers’ mobile phone addictive behaviors. Methods: An experimental study was conducted on 910 teenage volunteers recruited from 5 communities in Gansu, Hebei, and Liaoning Provinces in China from May to July 2023. The participants were screened using the Mobile Phone Addiction Index Scale (MPAI). On the basis of the evaluation results, 56 individuals were selected based on the evaluation results and randomly divided into experimental and control groups, each comprising 28 individuals. The experimental group underwent an 8-week mindfulness-based mental health education therapy. Both groups were measured before and after the intervention. Results: The mobile phone addiction score of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.001). The cognitive tendency score and mental wellbeing score of the experimental group was significantly higher than those of the control group (P<0.001). Conclusion: Mindfulness-based mental health education therapy effectively alleviates teenagers’ mobile phone addiction and improves their cognitive tendencies and mental health. This approach serves as a valuable reference for effectively preventing and managing mobile phone addiction among teenagers.

Abstract:Childhood obesity is a crucial public health concern. In recent years, numerous studies have employed mobile health technology applications for weight control in children but obtaining varying effects. We conducted a meta-analysis to discuss the effectiveness of mobile health technology in reducing the body mass index (BMI) of obese children. The standardized mean difference (SMD) in BMI between the intervention and control groups was employed to measure the effect of mobile health technology intervention on weight control. The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Version 3 software was employed for meta-analysis, and the results are presented in a forest plot. This study included nine randomized control trials, which featured a total of 1,202 participants. The meta-analysis revealed that mobile health technology intervention did not have a significant weight loss effect on subjects with obesity. However, by using ethnicity as a moderating variable for subgroup analysis, we discovered that the BMI of ethnic Chinese groups who received mobile health technology intervention was significantly lower than that of the control group. This effect was not significant in the non-ethnic Chinese subgroup. Therefore, the use of mobile health technology intervention for weight control in ethnic Chinese children resulted in significantly lower BMI in these children; however, the use of mobile health technology intervention for weight control is unsuitable for non-ethnic Chinese children.

Abstract:Objective: To assess the overall effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions on internet addiction (IA) in youth. Method: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from their inception to April 1, 2023 were searched in Cochrane, Embase, Medline, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database, and WanFang Data. Two reviewers independently extracted data and evaluated bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Results: Sixty-six studies performed from 2007 to 2023, with a total of 4,385 participants, were identified. The NPIs included group counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, sports intervention, combined interventions, eHealth, educational intervention, positive psychology intervention, sand play intervention, and electrotherapy. The results revealed that NPIs significantly reduced IA levels (standardized mean difference, SMD: −2.01, 95% confidence interval, CI: −2.29 to −1.73, I 2 = 93.0%), anxiety levels (SMD: −1.07, 95%CI: −1.41 to −0.73, I 2 = 72.4%), depression levels (SMD: −1.11, 95%CI: −1.52 to −0.7, I 2 = 84.3%), and SCL-90 (SMD: −0.75, 95%CI: −0.97 to −0.54, I 2 = 27.7%). Subgroup analysis stratified by intervention measure showed that cognitive behavioral therapy, group counseling, sports intervention, combined intervention, educational intervention, positive psychology intervention, sandplay intervention, and mobile health were all effective in relieving symptoms of IA except electrotherapy. Conclusion: NPIs appear to be effective in the treatment of IA in youth, which would act as an alternative treatment of IA. Further studies with larger sample sizes and robust designs are needed.

Abstract:Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare, Ahead of Print. BackgroundMobile applications for mental health have the potential to aid people with mental health disorders, especially depression, by providing them with tools and coping mechanisms. Adolescents and young adults, being at risk of depressive symptoms and leading mobile users, are among the main targets of using mobile applications to alleviate symptoms.ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the impact of mobile application–based psychological interventions in reducing depression symptoms in adolescents and young adults compared to those not exposed to the intervention.MethodsWe conducted a meta-analysis focusing on mobile applications for reducing depressive symptoms. We searched two databases: MEDLINE and EMBASE and included randomized controlled trials conducted in English among participants aged 18–35 years old who were assessed for depressive symptoms using a validated screening measure and used mobile applications–based psychological interventions. Two of six independent reviewers conducted study selection, data extraction, and bias assessment. A pooled mean standardized difference (Cohen's d) and 95% CI were calculated using random-effects meta-analysis. Risk of bias was assessed using I2 statistics and forest plot. Egger's test was used for assessing publication bias.ResultsAfter screening 740 references, we identified 12 trials with 1869 participants, with a mean age of participants ranging from 14.70 to 25.1 years. The interventions ranged from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based mobile apps to interactive story-telling apps and apps delivering a mix of CBT, interpersonal psychotherapy for adolescents, and dialectical behavior therapy elements. Control groups included information-only, waitlist, no intervention, and treatment as usual. Seven studies used Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to assess the severity of depressive symptoms, while the other five used different scales. There was no evidence of publication bias (p = 0.325). The mobile applications reduced depression score by 0.08 units of standardized difference more than the control, with a 95% CI of −0.19 to 0.03 (p = 0.294, I2 = 15.4%) using standardized mean difference (SMD) as the effect estimate. In a sensitivity analysis including only studies that used PHQ-9, we found a similar trend, SMD −0.72 (95%CI −1.48 to 0.03). However, both findings were not significant.ConclusionsCurrent evidence is insufficient to support mobile applications to relieve depression symptoms in adolescents and young adults. Further trials with larger sample size are needed to confirm our findings of a positive trend. With emerging technologies and the high exposure of apps in this population, mobile applications for depression hold promise for the future of treatment and awareness of mental health disorders in this population.

The associations between smartphone addiction and self-esteem, self-control, and social support among Chinese adolescents: A meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Smartphone addiction has become a social problem that affects the healthy growth of adolescents, and it is frequently reported to be correlated with self-esteem, self-control, and social support among adolescents. Methods: A meta-analysis was conducted by searching the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO, PsycArticles, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WANFANG DATA, and Chongqing VIP Information Co., Ltd. (VIP) databases. Stata 16.0 was used to analyse the overall effect and test the moderating effect. Results: Fifty-six studies were included, involving a total of 42,300 participants. Adolescents' smartphone addiction had a moderately negative correlation with self-esteem (r = -0.25, 95% CI = -0.29 to -0.22, p < 0.001), a strong negative correlation with self-control (r = -0.48, 95% CI = -0.53 to -0.42, p < 0.001), and a weak negative correlation with social support (r = -0.16, 95% CI = -0.23 to -0.09, p < 0.001). Moderation analysis revealed that the correlation between adolescents' smartphone addiction and self-esteem was strongest when smartphone addiction was measured with the Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale for College Students (MPATS; r = -0.38). The correlation between adolescents' smartphone addiction and self-control was strongest when self-control was measured with the Middle school students' Self-control Ability Questionnaire (MSAQ; r = -0.62). The effect of dissertations on smartphone addiction, self-control, and social support among adolescents was significantly larger than that of journal articles. The correlation between adolescents' smartphone addiction and social support was strongest when smartphone addiction was measured with the Mobile Phone Addiction Index (MPAI; r = -0.24). However, the correlations between adolescents' smartphone addiction and self-esteem, self-control, and social support were not affected by age or gender. Conclusion: There was a strong relationship between smartphone addiction and self-esteem, self-control, and social support among adolescents. In the future, longitudinal research should be carried out to better investigate the dynamic changes in therelationship between smartphone addiction and self-esteem, self-control, and social support. Brief moderate-intensity aerobic exercise improves the executive function of Chinese undergraduates regardless of mobile phone addiction: Evidence from the antisaccade task

Abstract:Introduction: Previous studies have shown that brief moderate-intensity aerobic exercise can improve the executive function of healthy adults. The present study sought to examine and compare the effects of brief moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on the executive functions of undergraduates with and without mobile phone addiction. Method: Thirty-two healthy undergraduates with mobile phone addiction were recruited and randomly assigned to either an exercise or control group. Likewise, 32 healthy undergraduates without mobile phone addiction were recruited and randomly assigned to either an exercise or control group. Participants were asked to perform moderate-intensity aerobic exercise for 15 minutes for the exercise groups. The executive functions of all participants were assessed via the antisaccade task twice (i.e., pre-test and post-test). Results: The results showed that the saccade latency, variability of saccade latency, and error rate decreased significantly from pre-test to post-test for all participants. More importantly, after the 15-min moderate-intensity aerobic exercise intervention, participants in the exercise groups showed significantly shorter saccade latency than their counterparts in the control groups, regardless of whether they are with mobile phone addiction. Discussion: This result is consistent with previous studies demonstrating that brief moderate-intensity aerobic exercise can improve one's executive function. Furthermore, the absence of significant interaction among Time, Group, and Intervention implies that the effects of brief moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on executive function are comparable between participants with and without mobile phone addiction. The present study supports the previous conclusion that brief moderate-intensity aerobic exercise can improve one's executive function effectively, and extends it to the population with mobile phone addiction. In summary, the present study has some implications for understanding of the relationship between exercise, executive function, and mobile phone addiction.

Abstract:Background Mobile phone addiction brings many adverse effects to teenagers, such as physical health problems, emotional problems, and academic failure, and studies have found that social support is an important influencing factor. Therefore, considering institutional, cultural and economic differences, we aimed to investigate the association between mobile phone addiction and social support among mainland Chinese teenagers, and explored the moderators affecting the relation. Methods Based on the PRISMA method, a meta-analysis was applied to quantitatively synthesize relevant findings to obtain reliable estimates of effect sizes and conduct moderator analyses. Results In total, 92 studies involving 59,716 participants and 92 effect sizes were identified by a systematic literature search. A significant low degree of negative correlation was found between mobile phone addiction and social support ( r = −0.174, 95%CI = −0.213 to −0.134, p < 0.001, I 2 = 96.1%). Moreover, the present meta-analysis observed significant moderating effects of participants' gender, and region on the association between social support and mobile phone addiction. Conclusion This study suggests that the mobile phone addiction level of teenagers could be reduced by increasing social support, and actions to improve their social support levels should be proposed based on their gender and regional differences. Abstract:Abstract Objective The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) intervention in reducing problematic mobile phone use, depression, and sleep disorders among adolescents. Additionally, it sought to investigate whether the decrease in problematic mobile phone use acted as a mediator in the relationship between the MBCT intervention and adolescent depression and sleep disorders. Methods In a randomized controlled trial, a total of 104 adolescents were randomly assigned to the mindfulness group ( n = 52) or the wait-list control group ( n = 52). The mindfulness group students completed eight 45-min sessions of mindfulness training in four weeks. The outcomes were measured at baseline, postintervention, and at the 2-month follow-up. Results Compared with the control group, the mindfulness group had significantly greater levels of mindfulness and lower levels of problematic mobile phone use, depression, and sleep disorders postintervention. The intervention effects were maintained at the 2-month follow-up. In addition, decreased problematic mobile phone use significantly mediated the association between the MBCT intervention and decreased depression and decreased sleep disorders. Conclusion The findings suggest that MBCT could improve adolescent depression and sleep disorders and that decreasing problematic mobile phone use is an effective pathway accounting for the MBCT intervention effect on adolescent depression and sleep disorders.

Abstract:The observation that obesity, dyslipidaemia, diabetes and hypertension occur simultaneously in many people was first made by Crepaldi in 1967 [1]. In the late 1970s, this clustering of conditions was termed the metabolic syndrome by German researchers [2,3]. Since then the syndrome has been described under a number of guises (see table 1). The term insulin resistance syndrome was coined due to a suggested causal relationship with insulin resistance. However, not all patients with the metabolic syndrome are insulin resistant. Another school of thought is that obesity induces diabetes in these patients and, hence, the term diabesity emerged, although diabetes is not present in all cases. Therefore, perhaps the original terminology—the metabolic syndrome—remains the most appropriate, as it is well established and best describes the conditions that comprise it. Since its original description, the conditions that comprise the metabolic syndrome (and the cut-off points for each) have been a subject for debate, for example, conditions such as microalbuminuria, hypofibrinolysis and vascular inflammation have been proposed as additional components. A recent study demonstrated that C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, a marker of vascular inflammation, positively correlate with the severity of the metabolic syndrome [4]. The study further showed that levels 3mg/l were associated with significantly increased risk of a cardiovascular event. Attempts to develop a unifying definition have been made by a number of expert groups, the most accepted and up-to-date include the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Cholesterol Education Programme Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) criteria (see tables 2 and 3, respectively). As these criteria utilize common clinically measurable variables, they provide a practical diagnostic tool for physicians; this is discussed in more detail later in this article. The criteria have also enabled epidemiologic and outcome studies to be conducted.
