Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons and phonon polaritons offer a means of surpassing the diffraction limit of conventional optics and facilitate efficient energy storage, local field enhancement, high sensitivities, benefitting from their subwavelength confinement of light. Unfortunately, losses severely limit the propagation decay length, thus restricting the practical use of polaritons. While optimizing the fabrication technique can help circumvent the scattering loss of imperfect structures, the intrinsic absorption channel leading to heat production cannot be eliminated. Here, we utilize synthetic optical excitation of complex frequency with virtual gain, synthesized by combining the measurements taken at multiple real frequencies, to restore the lossless propagations of phonon polaritons with significantly reduced intrinsic losses. The concept of synthetic complex frequency excitation represents a viable solution to compensate for loss and would benefit applications including photonic circuits, waveguiding and plasmonic/phononic structured illumination microscopy.

Excitation of hybrid plasmon polaritons (HPPs) using nanofibers

Abstract:Dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton (DLSPP) is a potential candidate for nanoscale optical elements with sizes much smaller than the diffraction limit and extremely low loss. In this work, we will combine the convenience of fiber based devices and the tight confinement of DLSPP waveguide, and then propose a nanofiber-loaded structure for the DLSPP application. Through the finite element method (FEM) modeling, we demonstrated the hybridization between hybrid surface plasmon polariton modes (HSPPs) and nanofiber modes, and analyzed the generation of hybrid plasmon polaritons (HPPs) super-modes. We also showed the existence of higher order HSPP, which is helpful to reduce the bending loss of DLSPP structure. Due to its polarization dependent transmission loss, we demonstrated one of its applications as polarizer experimentally.

Abstract:The influence of ohmic (metallic) loss on the complex band structure (BS) and eigenmodes of 2-D plasmonic crystals is investigated. With the help of wave equations and periodic boundary conditions, a finite-difference-based eigenvalue algorithm is proposed to model the plasmonic crystals with arbitrarily lossy and dispersive materials. Given a frequency of interests, the algorithm solves one complex Bloch wavenumber as the eigenvalue via fixing another. Most importantly, the developed eigenvalue analysis could expand the bulk excitation solution with eigenmodes, which satisfies the generalized phase (momentum) matching condition. For a TE polarization with Hz field, the ohmic loss strongly affects the BS and eigenmodes at plasmonic resonance frequencies. Both the fast oscillation of a dispersion curve and strong field confinement of eigenmodes are damped due to the high ohmic loss. For a TM polarization with Ez field, the introduction of ohmic loss twists the vertical dispersion curve at the bandgap and breaks the symmetry of the eigenmodes. For both polarizations, the high ohmic loss lowers the quality factor of the eigenmodes. This paper offers a fundamental and important eigenvalue analysis for designing lossy and dispersive plasmonic crystals.

Abstract:Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) are generated when infrared photons couple to polar optic phonons in anisotropic media, confining long-wavelength light to nanoscale volumes. However, to realize the full potential of HPhPs for infrared optics, it is crucial to understand propagation and loss mechanisms on substrates suitable for applications from waveguiding to infrared sensing. We employ scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and nano-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, in concert with analytical and numerical calculations, to elucidate HPhP characteristics as a function of the complex substrate dielectric function. We consider propagation on suspended, dielectric and metallic substrates to demonstrate that the thickness-normalized wavevector can be reduced by a factor of 25 simply by changing the substrate from dielectric to metallic behavior. Moreover, by incorporating the imaginary contribution to the dielectric function in lossy materials, the wavevector can be dynamically controlled by small local variations in loss or carrier density. Counterintuitively, higher-order HPhP modes are shown to exhibit the same change in the polariton wavevector as the fundamental mode, despite the drastic differences in the evanescent ranges of these polaritons. However, because polariton refraction is dictated by the fractional change in the wavevector, this still results in significant differences in polariton refraction and reduced sensitivity to substrate-induced losses for the higher-order HPhPs. Such effects may therefore be used to spatially separate hyperbolic modes of different orders and for index-based sensing schemes. Our results advance our understanding of fundamental hyperbolic polariton excitations and their potential for on-chip photonics and planar metasurface optics.
Microcavity electrodynamics of hybrid surface plasmon polariton modes in high-quality multilayer trench gratings

Abstract:In common plasmonic structures, absorption and radiation losses are often mutually restricted and can seriously influence the device performance. The current study presents a compound structure composed of multilayer grating stripes and multilayer shallow trenches. A small depth was adopted for the trench configuration to exclude the extra bend loss. These two sections supported Fabry–Perot resonance and cavity modes, respectively, with hybrid modes formed through intercoupling. In addition, the total loss for the entire framework was clearly reduced due to the introduction of the trench geometry, indicating that both absorption and radiation losses were successfully taken into consideration in the compound structure. Significantly, such a low loss realized by the hybridization of surface plasmon polariton modes has rarely been seen before. Moreover, the debatable relationship between the total and partial quality factors was described for the first time based on a hybrid mode analysis to establish a new approach to investigate the different resonance modes. In the detailed calculation process, the relative electric field intensity was first adopted to stipulate the effective areas for the various modes, which is more reasonable than using the common definition that is based on a unit structure. The multilayer trench grating exhibited a relatively low loss without weakening energy localization, which is significant in the design of plasmonic devices.

Abstract:Silicon-based optoelectronics large-scale integrated circuits have been of interest to the world in recent decades due to the need for higher complexity, larger link capacity, and lower cost. Surface plasmons are electromagnetic waves that propagate along the interface between a conductor and a dielectric, which can be confined several orders smaller than the wavelength in a vacuum and offers the potential for minimizing photonic circuits to the nanoscale. However, plasmonic waveguides are usually accompanied by substantial propagation loss because metals always exhibit significant resistive heating losses when interacting with light. Therefore, it is better to couple silicon-based optoelectronics and plasmonics and bridge the gap between micro-photonics and nanodevices, especially some nano-electronic devices. In this review, we discuss methods to enhance silicon-based optoelectronics by hybrid plasmon polaritons and summarize some recently reported designs. It is believed that by utilizing the strong light confinement of plasmonics, we can overcome the conventional diffraction limit of light and further improve the integration of optoelectronic circuits.
Overcoming losses in superlenses with synthetic waves of complex frequency

Abstract:Superlenses made of plasmonic materials and metamaterials have been exploited to image features of sub-diffractional scale. However, their intrinsic losses impose a serious restriction on the imaging resolution, which is a long-standing problem that has hindered wide-spread applications of superlenses. Optical waves of complex frequency exhibiting a temporally attenuating behavior have been proposed to offset the intrinsic losses in superlenses via virtual gain, but the experimental realization has been missing due to the challenge involved in preparing the illumination with temporal decay. Here, by employing multi-frequency measurement, we successfully implement a synthetic optical wave of complex frequency to experimentally observe deep-subwavelength superimaging patterns enabled by the virtual gain. Our work represents a practical approach to overcoming the intrinsic losses of plasmonic systems for imaging and sensing applications.

Inverse Design of Polaritonic Devices

Abstract:Polaritons, arising from the strong coupling between excitons and photons within microcavities, hold promise for optoelectronic and all-optical devices. They have found applications in various domains, including low-threshold lasers and quantum information processing. To realize complex functionalities, non-intuitive designs for polaritonic devices are required. In this contribution, we use finite-difference time-domain simulations of the dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation, written in a differentiable manner, and combine it with an adjoint formulation. Such a method allows us to use topology optimization to engineer the potential landscape experienced by polariton condensates to tailor its characteristics on demand. The potential directly translates to a blueprint for a functional device, and various fabrication and optical control techniques can experimentally realize it. We inverse-design a selection of polaritonic devices, i.e., a structure that spatially shapes the polaritons into a flat-top distribution, a metalens that focuses a polariton, and a nonlinearly activated isolator. The functionalities are preserved when employing realistic fabrication constraints such as minimum feature size and discretization of the potential. Our results demonstrate the utility of inverse design techniques for polaritonic devices, providing a stepping stone toward future research in optimizing systems with complex light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Optical coupling between propagating light and confined surface polaritons plays a pivotal role in the practical design of nanophotonic devices. However, the coupling efficiency decreases dramatically with the degree of mode confinement due to the mismatch that exists between the light and polariton wavelengths, and despite the intense efforts made to explore different mechanisms proposed to circumvent this problem, the realization of a flexible scheme to efficiently couple light to polaritons remains a challenge. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an efficient coupling of light to surface–plasmon polaritons assisted by engineered dipolar scatterers placed at an optimum distance from the surface. Specifically, we fabricate gold disks separated by a silica spacer from a planar gold surface and seek to achieve perfect coupling conditions by tuning the spacer thickness for a given scatterer geometry that resonates at a designated optical frequency. We measure a maximum light-to-plasmon coupling cross section of the order of the square of the light wavelength at an optimum distance that results from the interplay between a large particle-surface interaction and a small degree of surface-driven particle-dipole quenching, both of which are favored at small separations. Our experiments, in agreement with both analytical theory and electromagnetic simulations, support the use of optimally placed engineered scatterers as a disruptive approach to solving the long-standing problem of in/out-coupling in nanophotonics.

Quantum Dynamics Simulations of the Polariton Transport Process

Abstract:Recent experiments have shown that the transport of excitons in organic semiconductors can be significantly enhanced through hybridization with confined photonic modes in a cavity, thereby forming molecular exciton-polaritons (EP). Dissipative mechanisms that affect the constituent states of EPs, such as exciton-phonon coupling and cavity loss, have been observed to diminish their effective velocities in experiments. To elucidate the impacts of these dissipative mechanisms on the transport characteristics of molecular EPs, we develop an efficient quantum dynamics simulation approach that allows us to directly simulate polariton transport dynamics under the collective coupling regime and beyond long-wavelength approximation. Our numerical results suggest a renormalization of the group velocities with stronger exciton-phonon coupling strengths and smaller Q-factor, in agreement with existing polariton transport experiments. Additionally, we observe the transition from ballistic to diffusive EP propagation, as well as the quality factor-dependent behavior of the transient mean square displacement, agreeing well with the recent experimental measurements.

Abstract:An efficient frequency conversion scheme of surface-plasmon polariton (SPP) is proposed for nonlinear plasmonic applications. Lossy coupling wave equations are deduced to describe the interaction among involved SPP frequency components. The reciprocal vector of a microstructure could partially compensate the SPP wave-vector mismatch through quasiphase matching (QPM). As an example, the frequency doubling of SPP over a periodically poled lithium niobate is studied. The high-field concentration of SPP greatly enhanced the second-harmonic generation (HG) over a short traveling distance. Although the high attenuation of SPP affects the SHG severely, a long-range SPP SHG is further proposed and investigated, which shows great efficiency improvement. The applications of QPM SPP frequency conversion are also discussed showing great potentials in miniature plasmonic sources and processors.
Structural Dispersion–based Reduction of Loss in Epsilon-Near-zero and Surface Plasmon Polariton Waves

Abstract:The field of plasmonics has substantially affected the study of light-matter interactions at the subwavelength scale. However, dissipation losses still remain an inevitable obstacle in the development of plasmonic-based wave propagation. Although different materials with moderate losses are being extensively studied, absorption arguably continues to be the key challenge in the field. Here, we theoretically and numerically investigate a different route toward the reduction of loss in propagating plasmon waves. Rather than focusing on a material-based approach, we take advantage of structural dispersion in waveguides to manipulate effective material parameters, thus leading to smaller losses. The potential of this approach is illustrated with two examples: plane-wave propagation within a bulk epsilon-near-zero medium and surface plasmon polariton propagation at the interface of a medium with negative permittivity. We provide the recipe for a practical implementation at mid-infrared frequencies. Our results might represent an important step toward the development of low-loss plasmonic technologies.
Surface-polaritonic phase singularities and multimode polaritonic frequency combs via dark rogue-wave excitation in hybrid plasmonic waveguide

Abstract:Material characteristics and input-field specifics limit the controllability of nonlinear electromagnetic-field interactions. As these nonlinear interactions could be exploited to create strongly localized bright and dark waves, such as nonlinear surface polaritons, ameliorating this limitation is important. We present our approach to amelioration, which is based on a surface-polaritonic waveguide reconfiguration that enables excitation, propagation and coherent control of coupled dark rogue waves having orthogonal polarizations. Our control mechanism is achieved by finely tuning laser-field intensities and their respective detuning at the interface between the atomic medium and the metamaterial layer. In particular, we utilize controllable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows commensurate with surface-polaritonic polarization-modulation instability to create symmetric and asymmetric polaritonic frequency combs associated with dark localized waves. Our method takes advantage of an atomic self-defocusing nonlinearity and dark rogue-wave propagation to obtain a sufficient condition for generating phase singularities. Underpinning this method is our theory which incorporates dissipation and dispersion due to the atomic medium being coupled to nonlinear surface-polaritonic waves~(SPWs). Consequently, our waveguide configuration acts as a bimodal polaritonic frequency-comb generator and a high-speed phase rotator, thereby opening prospects for phase singularities in nanophotonic and quantum communication devices.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian photonic systems with gains and/or losses have recently emerged as a powerful approach for topology-protected optical transport and novel device applications. To date, most of these systems employ coupled optical systems of diffraction-limited dielectric waveguides or microcavities, which exchange energy spatially or temporally. Here, we introduce a diffraction-unlimited approach using a plasmon–exciton coupling (polariton) system with tunable plasmonic resonance (energy and line width) and coupling strength. By designing a chirped silver nanogroove cavity array and coupling a single tungsten disulfide monolayer with a large contrast in resonance line width, we show the tuning capability through energy level anticrossing and plasmon–exciton hybridization (line width crossover), as well as spontaneous symmetry breaking across the exceptional point at zero detuning. Abstract:During the early years of database management the contemporary wisdom was to store only â€˜useful data.â€™ In large part, this philosophy was encouraged because of the then-limited storage capacity offered by the prevailing technology. Then along came the microprocessor revolution, enormously expanding the scope of data storage. Subsequent advancement in information technology and recognition of potential business opportunities thereof, resulted in enormous expansion of data storage. Although the future is unknown and unpredictable, it often provides new business opportunities. Thus, new management strategies emerged which encouraged the massive accumulation of data and thus the advent of data warehousing. These massive data depositories are now providing both challenges and opportunities for strategic decision-making concerned with improving existing businesses and exploring new business opportunities. Data mining is an essential part of the process involved in locating relevant information from data warehouses for use in making such strategic decisions. Naturally, business leaders everywhere are willing to make investments in corporate data warehouses to enhance their access to information. The return on such investment is by no means guaranteed but all business activities include a certain amount of risk.

Abstract:<p>Phonon polaritons—light coupled to lattice vibrations—in polar van der Waals crystals offer unprecedented opportunities for controlling light at the nanoscale due to their anisotropic and ultralow‐loss propagation. While their analog plasmon polaritons—light coupled to electron oscillations—have long been studied and exhibit interesting reflections at geometrical edges and electronic boundaries, whether phonon polaritons can be reflected by such barriers has been elusive. Here, the effective and tunable reflection of phonon polaritons at embedded interfaces formed in hydrogen‐intercalated α‐MoO<sub>3</sub> flakes is elaborated upon. Without breaking geometrical continuity, such intercalation interfaces can reflect phonon polaritons with low losses, yielding the distinct phase changes of −0.8π and −0.3π associated with polariton propagation, high efficiency of 50%, and potential electrical tunability. The results point to a new approach to construct on‐demand polariton reflectors, phase modulators, and retarders, which may be transplanted into building future polaritonic circuits using van der Waals crystals.</p>

Optimized Colossal Near‐Field Thermal Radiation Enabled by Manipulating Coupled Plasmon Polariton Geometry

Abstract:Collective optoelectronic phenomena such as plasmons and phonon polaritons can drive processes in many branches of nanoscale science. Classical physics predicts that a perfect thermal emitter operates at the black body limit. Numerous experiments have shown that surface phonon polaritons allow emission two orders of magnitude above the limit at a gap distance of approximate to 50 nm. This work shows that a supported multilayer graphene structure improves the state of the art by around one order of magnitude with a approximate to 1129-fold-enhancement at a gap distance of approximate to 55 nm. Coupled surface plasmon polaritons at mid- and far-infrared frequencies allow for near-unity photon tunneling across a broad swath of k-space enabling the improved result. Electric tuning of the Fermi-level allows for the detailed characterization and optimization of the colossal nanoscale heat transfer.

Abstract:An exceptional point (EP) arises when both the eigenvectors and eigenvalues coalesce, which in a physical system can be achieved by engineering the gain and loss coefficients, leading to a wide variety of counterintuitive phenomena. In photonic systems, the loss and gain are generally realized by the special design of the samples. Light–matter hybrid exciton polaritons, however, are inherent non-Hermitian systems in which EPs can be approached easier such as in virtue of nonlinearity. In this work we demonstrate the existence of an EP in an exciton polariton condensate in a double-well potential. Near the EP, the polariton condensate localized in one potential well can be switched off by an additional optical excitation in the other well with very low (far below threshold) power, which surprisingly induces additional loss into the system. Increasing the power of the additional laser leads to a situation in which gain dominates in both wells again, such that the polaritons recondense in the two potential wells. The switching off near the EP can also be realized by the polariton nonlinearity induced blueshift in the same structure. Our results offer a simple way to optically manipulate the polariton condensation process in a double-well potential. Extending such a configuration to complex potential well lattices offers exciting prospects to explore high-order EPs and non-Hermitian topological photonics in a nonequilibrium many-body system.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) sources and launchers are highly demanded in various applications of nanophotonics. Here, we propose a general approach that can realize complete control of the complex extinction ratio (including amplitude and phase) of any two linearly independent SPP modes excited by any elementary SPP excitation architecture just by manipulating the incident polarization state. In an optical system, it suffices to simply tune the orientation angles of a linear polarizer and a quarter wave plate, which may greatly simplify the design and application of SPP launchers and diversify their functionalities. As an example to show the broad application prospect of this method, we design and realize a metaline consisting of Δ-shaped plasmonic nanoantennas, which can effectively realize dual functionalities, i.e., the tunable directional SPP excitation at an arbitrarily chosen wavelength and the complete unidirectional SPP excitation over a broad bandwidth. This general approach can also be extended to the control of the complex extinction ratio of any two linearly independent excited modes in many other linear optical systems, such as two modes in a waveguide or two diffraction orders in a grating, over a broad bandwidth.
Polaritonic Hybrid-Epsilon-near-Zero Modes: Beating the Plasmonic Confinement vs Propagation-Length Trade-Off with Doped Cadmium Oxide Bilayers

Abstract:Polaritonic materials that support epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) modes offer the opportunity to design light-matter interactions at the nanoscale through extreme subwavelength light confinement, producing phenomena like resonant perfect absorption. However, the utility of ENZ modes in nanophotonic applications has been limited by a flat spectral dispersion, which leads to small group velocities and extremely short propagation lengths. Here, we overcome this constraint by hybridizing ENZ and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes in doped cadmium oxide epitaxial bilayers. This results in strongly coupled hybrid modes that are characterized by an anticrossing in the polariton dispersion and a large spectral splitting on the order of 1/3 of the mode frequency. These hybrid modes simultaneously achieve modal propagation and ENZ mode-like interior field confinement, adding propagation character to ENZ mode properties. We subsequently tune the resonant frequencies, dispersion, and coupling of these polaritonic-hybrid-epsilon-near-zero (PH-ENZ) modes by tailoring the modal oscillator strength and the ENZ-SPP spectral overlap. PH-ENZ modes ultimately leverage the most desirable characteristics of both ENZ and SPP modes, allowing us to overcome the canonical plasmonic trade-off between confinement and propagation length.
