Abstract:We demonstrate the feasibility of probing the charged lepton flavor violating decay $\mu^{+}\!\!\rightarrow \!e^{+} X^{0}$ for the presence of a slow-moving neutral boson $X^{0}$ capable of undergoing gravitational binding to large structures, and as such able to participate in some cosmological scenarios. A short exposure to surface antimuons from beamline M20 at TRIUMF generates a branching ratio limit of $\lesssim 10^{-5}$. This is comparable or better than previous searches for this channel, although in a thus-far unexplored region of $X^{0}$ phase space very close to the kinematic limit of the decay. The future improved sensitivity of the method using a customized p-type point contact germanium detector is described.

Abstract:Experiments looking for a lepton flavor-violating decay $\mu^{+}\!\!\rightarrow \!e^{+} X^{0}$ are reviewed in light of present-day germanium detector technology, with an eye on scenarios where a long-lived, slow-moving massive boson $X^{0}$ might have a cosmological impact. A broad swath of interesting, unexplored parameter space very close to the kinematic limit of the decay is found to be within the reach of a new proposed search. A number of possible roles for $X^{0}$ in past and present epochs can be investigated.

Abstract:A light scalar X0 or vector X1 particles have been introduced as a possible explanation for the (g−2)μ anomaly and dark matter phenomena. Using (8.998±0.039)×109 J/ψ events collected by the BESIII detector, we search for a light muon philic scalar X0 or vector X1 in the processes J/ψ→μ+μ−X0,1 with X0,1 invisible decays. Search for a resonance decaying to a W boson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using leptonic W boson decays

Abstract:A search for a new charged particle X with mass between 0.3 and 2.0 TeV decaying to a W boson and a photon is presented, using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Particle X has electric charge $\pm$ 1 and is assumed to have spin 0. The search is performed using the electron and muon decays of the W boson. No significant excess above the predicted background is observed. The upper limit at 95% confidence level on the product of the production cross section of the X and its branching fraction to a W boson and a photon is found to be 94 (137) fb for a 0.3 TeV resonance and 0.75 (0.81) fb for a 2.0 TeV resonance, for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%). This search presents the most stringent constraints to date on the existence of such resonances across the probed mass range. A statistical combination with an earlier study based on the hadronic decay mode of the W boson is also performed, and the upper limit at 95% confidence level for a 2.0 TeV resonance is reduced to 0.50 (0.63) fb for an X width-to-mass ratio of 0.01% (5%).

Abstract:The search for axion-like particles $X$ in muon decays is an excellent opportunity for the MEG II and Mu3e experiments to extend their horizons beyond $\mu^+ \to e^+ \gamma$ and $\mu^+ \to e^+ e^- e^+$. A suitable process for both experiments is the two-body decay $\mu^+ \to e^+ X$, whose only signature is a monochromatic peak close to the kinematic endpoint of the positron energy spectrum of the $\mu^+ \to e^+ \nu_e \bar\nu_\mu$ background. The hunt for such an elusive signal in a vast amount of irreducible background requires extremely accurate theoretical predictions to be implemented in a Monte Carlo event generator. This work presents a new state-of-the-art computation of $\mu^+ \to e^+ \nu_e \bar\nu_\mu$ for polarised muons, accomplished with the McMule framework. The calculation includes next-to-next-leading order QED corrections and logarithmically enhanced terms at even higher orders. The results are also used to estimate the sensitivity of both experiments on the branching ratio of $\mu^+ \to e^+ X$, in order to evaluate the impact of the theoretical error.

Abstract:A search for a new boson X is presented using CERN LHC proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV in 2016-2018, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The resonance X decays into either a pair of Higgs bosons HH of mass 125 GeV or an H and a new spin-0 boson Y. One H subsequently decays to a pair of photons, and the second H or Y, to a pair of bottom quarks. The explored mass ranges of X are 260-1000 GeV and 300-1000 GeV, for decays to HH and to HY, respectively, with the Y mass range being 90-800 GeV. For a spin-0 X hypothesis, the 95% confidence level upper limit on the product of its production cross section and decay branching fraction is observed to be within 0.90-0.04 fb, depending on the masses of X and Y. The largest deviation from the background-only hypothesis with a local (global) significance of 3.8 (below 2.8) standard deviations is observed for X and Y masses of 650 and 90 GeV, respectively. The limits are interpreted using several models of new physics.

Abstract:Recent years have seen much activity in searches for dark-sector messenger particles in the 10-100 MeV mass range, especially in view of a potential new light boson conjectured by the ATOMKI collaboration, X17. Under the assumption that the messenger particle has definite parity and either zero or unit spin, quite stringent bounds already exist on its coupling to electrons and protons. Equally stringent bounds on the neutron coupling do not exist yet, but are nonetheless desirable. We explore how measurements of deuteron photodisintegration with a quasi-free neutron can yield bounds on the neutron coupling, and compute projections for a potential measurement at the lowenergy high-intensity electron scattering experiment MAGIX@MESA. The projected bounds are found to be competitive for an axial-vector or pseudoscalar scenario, but not for a vector or scalar scenario.

Abstract:We present a search for semileptonic B decays to the charmed baryon Lambda_c+ based on 420 fb-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II $e^+e^-$ storage rings. By fully reconstructing the recoiling B in a hadronic decay mode, we reduce non-B backgrounds and determine the flavor of the signal B. We statistically correct the flavor for the effect of the B0 mixing. We obtain a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(Bbar --> Lambda_c+ X l- nubar)/BF(Bbar --> Lambda_c+ X) < 3.5 %.

Abstract:One of the most straightforward extensions to the standard model is the model based on the gauge group . This model contains three heavy Right-Handed (RH) neutrinos, essential for anomaly cancellation and preserving gauge invariance. The model is attractive due to its relatively simple theoretical structure, and the crucial test of the model is the detection of the new heavy neutral gauge boson, the heavy-neutrinos , and the new Higgs boson H . The coexistence of a boson and the heavy-neutrinos opens up a new possibility of searching for these particles simultaneously by producing a at the future muon collider and its decay to a heavy-neutrinos pair. With these motivations, we carried out a study on the resonance and heavy-neutrino pair production at the future muon collider through the process with the subsequent decay of to pairs of with . The study is realized in the resonance of the boson and for the energies and luminosities of the future muon collider of TeV and . Our results show that the possibility of performing measurements for the boson and the heavy-neutrinos is moderate at the future muon collider. However, incorporating annihilation and Vector Boson Scattering rates of WWZ into our study, as well as the Leptonic, Semi-leptonic, and Hadronic channels of the for the signal, has an impact on the sensitivity of the process. Our results complement other studies on the production and decay of heavy neutrinos and may be helpful to the scientific community.

Sensitivities to New Resonance Couplings to $W$-Bosons at the LHC

Abstract:We propose a search strategy at the HL-LHC for a new neutral particle $X$ that couples to $W$-bosons, using the process $p p \rightarrow W^{\pm} X (\rightarrow W^{+} W^{-})$ with a tri-$W$-boson final state. Focusing on events with two same-sign leptonic $W$-boson decays into muons and a hadronically decaying $W$-boson, our method leverages the enhanced signal-to-background discrimination achieved through a machine-learning-based multivariate analysis. Using the heavy photophobic axion-like particle (ALP) as a benchmark, we evaluate the discovery sensitivities on both production cross section times branching ratio $\sigma(p p \rightarrow W^{\pm} X) \times \textrm{Br}(X \rightarrow W^{+} W^{-})$ and the coupling $g_{aWW}$ for the particle mass over a wide range of 170-3000 GeV at the HL-LHC with center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV and integrated luminosity $\mathcal{L} = 3$ $\textrm{ab}^{-1}$. Our results show significant improvements in discovery sensitivity, particularly for masses above 300 GeV, compared to existing limits derived from CMS analyses of Standard Model (SM) tri-$W$-boson production at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. This study demonstrates the potential of advanced selection techniques in probing the coupling of new particles to $W$-bosons and highlights the HL-LHC's capability to explore the physics beyond the SM.

Abstract:We describe a novel search strategy for axions (or hadronically coupled axionlike particles) in the mass range of ma≲350 MeV . The search relies on kaon decay at rest, which produces a monoenergetic signal in a large volume detector (e.g., a tank of liquid scintillator) from axion decays a→γγ or a→e+e− . The decay modes K+→π+a and a→γγ are induced by the axion's coupling to gluons, which is generic to any model which addresses the strong CP problem. We recast a recent search from MicroBooNE for e+e− pairs and study prospects at JSNS2 and other near-term facilities. Search for long-lived particles decaying to a pair of muons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:An inclusive search for long-lived exotic particles decaying to a pair of muons is presented. The search uses data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV in 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 97.6 fb$^{-1}$. The experimental signature is a pair of oppositely charged muons originating from a common secondary vertex spatially separated from the pp interaction point by distances ranging from several hundred $\mu$m to several meters. The results are interpreted in the frameworks of the hidden Abelian Higgs model, in which the Higgs boson decays to a pair of long-lived dark photons Z$_\mathrm{D}$, and of a simplified model, in which long-lived particles are produced in decays of an exotic heavy neutral scalar boson. For the hidden Abelian Higgs model with $m_\mathrm{Z_D}$ greater than 20 GeV and less than half the mass of the Higgs boson, they provide the best limits to date on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson to dark photons for $c\tau$(Z$_\mathrm{D}$) (varying with $m_\mathrm{Z_D}$) between 0.03 and ${\approx}$ 0.5 mm, and above ${\approx}$ 0.5 m. Our results also yield the best constraints on long-lived particles with masses larger than 10 GeV produced in decays of an exotic scalar boson heavier than the Higgs boson and decaying to a pair of muons.

Model-independent search for pair production of new bosons decaying into muons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Abstract:The results of a model-independent search for the pair production of new bosons within a mass range of 0.21 $\lt$ $m$ $\lt$ 60 GeV, are presented. This study utilizes events with a four-muon final state. We use two data sets, comprising 41.5 fb$^{-1}$ and 59.7 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, recorded in 2017 and 2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The study of the 2018 data set includes a search for displaced signatures of a new boson within the proper decay length range of 0 $\lt$ $c\tau$ $\lt$ 100 $\mu$m. Our results are combined with a previous CMS result, based on 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected in 2016. No significant deviation from the expected background is observed. Results are presented in terms of a model-independent upper limit on the product of cross section, branching fraction, and acceptance. The findings are interpreted across various benchmark models, such as an axion-like particle model, a vector portal model, the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model, and a dark supersymmetric scenario, including those predicting a non-negligible proper decay length of the new boson. In all considered scenarios, substantial portions of the parameter space are excluded, expanding upon prior results.

Abstract:We report on a search for a resonance $X$ decaying to a pair of muons in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow \mu^+ \mu^- X$ events in the 0.212-9.000 GeV/$c^{2}$ mass range, using 178 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the BelleII experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at a center of mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The analysis probes two different models of $X$ beyond the standard model: a $Z^{\prime}$ vector boson in the $L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ model and a muonphilic scalar. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at the 90$\%$ confidence level on the products of cross section and branching fraction for these processes, ranging from 0.046 fb to 0.97 fb for the $L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ model and from 0.055 fb to 1.3 fb for the muonphilic scalar model. For masses below 6 GeV/$c^{2}$, the corresponding constraints on the couplings of these processes to the standard model range from 0.0008 to 0.039 for the $L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ model and from 0.0018 to 0.040 for the muonphilic scalar model. These are the first constraints on the muonphilic scalar from a dedicated search.

Abstract:`A new search for two-neutrino double-beta (2 nu ss ss) decay of Xe-136 to the 0(1)(+)excited state of Ba-136 is performed with the full EXO-200 dataset. A deep learning-based convolutional neural network is used to discriminate signal from background events. Signal detection efficiency is increased relative to previous searches by EXO-200 by more than a factor of two. With the addition of the Phase II dataset taken with an upgraded detector, the median 90% confidence level half-life sensitivity of 2 nu ss ss decay to the state of Ba-136 is yr using a total Xe-136 exposure of 234.1 kg yr. No statistically significant evidence for 2 nu ss ss decay to the 0(1)(+) state is observed, leading to a lower limit of T-1/2(2 nu)(0+ -> 0(1)(+)) > 1.4 x 10(24) yr at 90% confidence level, improved by 70% relative to the current world's best constraint.

Abstract:The Majorana nature of neutrinos is one of the most fundamental questions in particle physics. It is directly related to the violation of accidental lepton number symmetry. This motivated enormous efforts into the search of such processes; among them, one conventional experiment is the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0 nu beta beta). On the other hand, there have been proposals of future electron-positron colliders as a "Higgs factory" for the precise measurement of Higgs boson properties, and it has been proposed to convert such a machine into an electron-electron collider. This option enables a new way to probe TeV Majorana neutrinos via the inverse 0 nu beta beta decay process (e(-) e(-) -> W- W-) as an alternative and complementary test to the conventional 0 nu beta beta decay experiments. In this paper, we investigate the collider search for e(-) e(-) -> W- W- in different decay channels at future electron colliders. We find that the pure hadronic channel, the semileptonic channel with a muon, and the pure leptonic channel with a dimuon have the most discovery potential.
