Abstract:Background: TikTok gives its users a platform to share and view short videos on a wide range of topics, including dermatology related topics. This project sought to analyze the sources of TikTok videos associated with the treatment of four dermatologic conditions and to report the percentage of videos posted by board-certified dermatologists. Methods: On July 16th, 2021, an investigator input the following hashtags into the TikTok application’s search bar: #AcneTreatment, #EczemaTreatment, #PsoriasisTreatment, and #RosaceaTreatment. After the total of 400 videos was obtained, the videos were then classified into the following categories based on the user posting the video: dermatologist, dermatology resident, non-dermatologist physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, esthetician, patient, beauty blogger, and other. Videos that were not in English, paid advertisements or by a business page, and/or unrelated to treatment or education of a dermatologic condition were excluded. Results: The top posters of all the videos analyzed were patients (40.8%) followed by dermatologists (16.8%). Of all the videos analyzed, 37.3% were posted by licensed professionals and the remaining 62.7% were posted by non-licensed posters. The licensed professionals mostly posted about acne (52.4%) out of the four conditions. Non-professional posters mostly posted about psoriasis (86.7%) and eczema (66.7%) out of the four conditions. Conclusions: There is a need for more dermatologist-created, educational content on TikTok and other platforms to increase the likelihood that users will interact with dermatologic content posted by board-certified dermatologists. Abstract:Background With TikTok's rising popularity as a hub for health information dissemination, the quality and nature of such content require assessment. This study investigates the popularity and quality of the top 100 most-liked videos tagged with "#acne" on TikTok. This study aims to examine the engagement and quality of acne-related content on TikTok, assess contributions from diverse sources, including physicians and non-physicians, and guide healthcare professionals in leveraging this platform for public health education. Methodology A cross-sectional analysis of the top 100 most-liked videos tagged with "#acne" on TikTok as of June 7, 2023, was conducted. Parameters assessed included the profession of the creator, gender, specialty, content type, and other observable characteristics. The quality was measured using the DISCERN tool. Results Of the dataset, 38 videos were by physicians and 29 by non-physicians. Physician-created content had higher mean views, likes, comments, shares, and favorites than non-physician-created content. Videos by dermatologists and non-dermatologists received similar engagement. Videos sharing personal experiences achieved the highest DISCERN score. Overall, DISCERN scores were uniformly low across all categories. Conclusions Physicians, especially dermatologists, are trusted sources of acne-related information on TikTok. The study underscores the need for professionals to provide reliable, evidence-based information on such platforms, guiding effective health communication in the digital age.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: With more than two billion downloads since its launch, TikTok is the fastest-growing video-sharing platform in the world. Many people turn to TikTok for dermatologic medical information. However, there is limited data about psoriasis and psoriasis treatment content on this social media platform.OBJECTIVE: To compare the viewer engagement, content quality, and viewer experience of psoriasis treatment TikTok videos between physicians and non-physicians.METHODS: We searched the terms "psoriasis" and "psoriasis treatment" on TikTok. Video characteristics were collected. Content quality was evaluated using DISCERN. Viewer experience was assessed using the AVA.RESULTS: Viewer engagement did not significantly differ between physicians and non-physician content creators (0.033 plus/minus 0.005 vs 0.047 plus/minus 0.001, P=0.066). Compared to non-physicians, physicians created videos of higher quality (DISCERN: 1.76 plus/minus 0.058 vs 1.44 plus/minus 0.032, P<0.001) and of greater viewer experience (AVA: 2.55 plus/minus 0.183 vs 1.96 plus/minus 0.081, P=0.001). However, there is room for improvement in terms of creating videos of higher quality by both physicians and non-physicians.CONCLUSION: TikTok can be a powerful tool to promote health literacy and dispel misinformation. Dermatologists may consider focusing their efforts on creating comprehensive educational content and incorporating trending features to reach a wider audience. Representation of Skin of Color in Social Media Discussions on Melasma, Keloids, and Vitiligo

Abstract:Background: The prevalence of social media as a source of medical information has grown substantially in recent years, especially for skin conditions disproportionately affecting individuals with skin of color, such as melasma, keloids, and vitiligo. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the nature of content related to these conditions on social media platforms, Instagram and TikTok. Methods: In March 2023, the top five hashtags for melasma, keloid, and vitiligo were identified on both platforms. For each hashtag, the 10 most popular posts were selected, based on Instagram and TikTok algorithms. A content analysis was conducted, categorizing posts as Educational, Promotional, or Inspirational. Posts were further classified by content creator type. Results: For the top 50 posts related to melasma on Instagram, the majority were promotional (58%), with the most common source being non-dermatologist social media influencers (50%). Dermatologists were the primary content creators for specific hashtags, such as #Melasma on TikTok, where the content was predominantly educational. Conclusion: Considering the high prevalence of dermatologist-creator content on TikTok, it is crucial to continue this shift toward dermatologist-driven educational content, as social media platforms continue to grow. DermTok: Who's Talking Sun? A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Sun Protection Content on TikTok

Abstract:Despite the widespread interest in dermatology on TikTok, studies have shown most related videos are not produced by board-certified dermatologists (BCDs) or other health professionals. To see if this trend extended to sun protection, we examined TikTok videos associated with sun safety to determine the proportion produced by BCDs. From August 25, 2023, to August 27, 2023, investigators input the following hashtags into the TikTok search bar: #sunscreen, #sunprotection, #spf, #skincancer, and #skinprotection. The top 100 videos in each category were analyzed and categorized based on the content creator. Additionally, we assessed whether videos explicitly addressed skin of color (SOC). Of the analyzed videos, only 16.6% originated from BCDs. Beauty bloggers/bloggers were the most prevalent creators in this category (38.7%), followed by patients/consumers (33.7%). Only 2.8% of the videos pertained to SOC patients. This highlights a gap in the type of educational content generated by dermatologists on TikTok, with sun safety being a potential subject to target within social media. Abstract:Our objective was to assess the quality of acne‐related medical information present on TikTok, the world's fastest growing social media platform. We queried the TikTok mobile application for videos tagged with "#acne" on May 1, 2020, and assessed the top 100 videos meeting inclusion criteria for content quality using DISCERN, a validated and reliable instrument for evaluating consumer health information. The mean content quality rating of videos was 2.03 (SD 0.47) which, according to the DISCERN instrument, indicates information with serious to potentially important shortcomings. Dermatologists should be aware that adolescents are using TikTok to gather acne‐related information, and should prioritize acne education in this patient demographic due to the generally low content quality of such information.

TikTok and Black Skin: Is This a Missed Opportunity for Dermatologists?

Abstract:Background: A study by Villa-Ruiz et al (2021) found that educational videos dominate the content of dermatologic videos on TikTok with 25.8% of the videos being posted by board-certified dermatologists. We sought to examine if these results would differ when the search is adjusted to hashtags specific to black skin.  Methods: On October 12th, 2021, an investigator input #BlackSkinCare, #BlackSkinTreatment, #BlackSkinAdvice, and #BlackSkinCareTips in TikTok. #SkinOfColor was not searched as this term is used almost exclusively by dermatologists and could skew the results. After the total of 200 videos was obtained, the videos were then classified into categories regarding their content, and the skin concern and creator were recorded. Results: Most of the videos were of educational content (57.1%), followed by personal experiences (23.2%). Clinical demonstrations/live procedures, business/advertisement, and entertainment/humor followed with 9.6%, 5.6%, and 4.5%, respectively. 54.5% of posts were about general skin care. 22.7% of posts addressed dark spots followed by acne (12.1%). Ingrown hair/razor bumps and skin texture/open pores followed, both with 3.5% each. 54% of videos were posted by vloggers or personal accounts. Board-certified dermatologists followed with 18.7% of the videos posted. Estheticians accounted for 16.2% and, lastly, business/industry comprised 8.6% of the videos analyzed. Conclusions: When searching black skin, TikTok posts are mostly educational and were less likely to have been created by a board-certified dermatologist. The top skin concern specified was dark spots. These findings suggest that there is an opportunity for dermatologists to increase educational content relating to black skin on TikTok. Abstract:Abstract Aim Social media exerts substantial influence on contemporary life, shaping the collective narrative. A current rising trend known as “academic social media” involves healthcare professionals leveraging social platforms for networking, patient education and recruitment. This cross-sectional analysis of Instagram and TikTok short video content aims to identify the perceptions of plastic surgery on social media. Method A search of the term “plastic surgery” was performed on Instagram and TikTok, and the first 100 short videos on each platform (TikTok’s and Reels) were reviewed. Posts were categorised based on their country of origin, the poster’s profession, content’s nature, sub-specialty, the accuracy of information and impact. Results The assessed videos garnered 355,909,365 views (302,881,140 on TikTok). Predominantly, the content was informative (66 posts), closely followed by advertisements and before-and-after visuals (59 each). Only 13 videos featured educational material. Aesthetic surgery overwhelmingly dominated, with only 5 videos addressing a different subspecialty. Plastic surgeons generated most content (42% on TikTok and 75% on Instagram), followed by patient-documented material. Cross-platform overlap was minimal. Approximately 27% of TikTok and 12.5% of Instagram videos contained inaccuracies with documented unsafe practices, such as a patient recounting an additional cosmetic procedure performed without consent. Conclusions The widespread popularity of short-form plastic surgery videos is evident. While many come from reliable sources, there is a notable emphasis on cosmetic procedures, presenting a skewed view of the diverse practices within plastic surgery. The significant prevalence of inaccuracies on TikTok, especially given its growing popularity compared to Instagram, raises concerns about the public dissemination of misinformation.

Abstract:Background TikTok is one of the fastest‐growing social media platform, and its short‐form videos have become a widely used source of health information. "Dermarolling" is a form of roller microneedling often practiced at home, and patients may be using TikTok to inform their decision to pursue this treatment and their practice of it. Aims This study assessed the informational content quality, source, and engagement of TikTok dermarolling videos to highlight potentially harmful social media trends. Methods On a predetermined date, "dermarolling" was searched on TikTok. The top 75 results were screened. Number of views, creator type, type of video, and whether risks were discussed were recorded. Information quality was assessed using the DISCERN tool. The data were stratified by creator type, and statistical analysis was performed using R version 4.3.2. Median viewership and DISCERN scores were compared using Kruskal–Wallis tests with post hoc pairwise Wilcoxon tests. Fisher's exact test was used to compare rates of risk discussion between groups. Results Sixty‐one of the reviewed videos met the inclusion criteria. Influencer videos engaged the largest overall audience and had higher median viewership than other creators. Physicians, primarily dermatologists, created exclusively educational content and influencers created mostly experience‐based content. Overall content quality was generally low‐moderate, with a median (IQR) DISCERN score of 30.5 (26.5–33.5). Physician content had higher median DISCERN scores than influencers (p = 0.004) and others (p = 0.004). Physicians were more likely to discuss risks compared to influencers (p = 0.02). Conclusions TikTok content on "dermarolling" was of relatively low quality, and nonphysicians command a large viewership. Physician‐created content is often of higher informational quality, and dermatologists should escalate their efforts to engage patients in this space to mitigate the effects of potential misinformation.

Current Public Trends in the Discussion of Dry Eyes: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Popular Content on TikTok

Abstract:Introduction Dry eye disease (DED) is a common ocular pathology with significant impacts on both quality of life and visual function. One platform where individuals are receiving healthcare information is TikTok, the world's fastest-growing social media platform. Though used by more than one billion users, current literature is not established to assess the quality of information on TikTok. The purpose of this study was to assess the quality of DED-related medical information present on TikTok. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of DED content on TikTok, utilizing the search term #DryEye to assess the top 150 videos appearing on December 20, 2021. Included videos were analyzed for descriptive statistics, including views, likes, uploader profession, and the number of uploader followers. Videos were assessed utilizing DISCERN, a tool used to appraise consumer health information. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine statistical significance groups. Results A total of 101 videos were included in the final analysis. When comparing content creators, physicians received a significantly greater number of views and higher DISCERN scores (p<0.05) than non-physician medical providers and non-medical individuals. The content of the videos were educational content (n=39, 38.6%) or treatment information (n=37, 36.6%), followed by home remedies (n=10, 9.9%) and personal anecdotes (n=8, 7.9%). Videos with rich supplementary visuals (multiple images/moving images) had higher DISCERN scores compared to videos with no supplementary visuals or one supplementary visual (p<0.01). Conclusion With the growing popularity of TikTok, it is important to provide high-quality information to ensure the dissemination of medically accurate information and reduce the prevalence of disinformation. Our results demonstrate that while TikTok is a powerful platform, the quality of videos can still be vastly improved. Content creators, regardless of profession, can improve their DISCERN through listing sources, comparing treatments, and discussing risks/outcomes of various treatment modalities.
The emergence of MedTok: a qualitative analysis of popular medical TikTok videos

Abstract:Abstract Social media is increasingly being used by the public as a medium for health information. Unfortunately, misinformation has become widely available on these sites, often being provided using content that is designed to be more popular and engaging, and it is difficult for the public to differentiate between what is true and what is false. TikTok is one of these platforms and has been rapidly growing over the last few years. As an increasing number of people look to TikTok for their health information, it is important that quality information is accessible and popular on the platform. We conducted a review of TikTok videos using the top 10 videos to show when searching for 13 common conditions. Characteristics of both the creator and video were recorded and analyzed. Videos on conditions commonly diagnosed younger were commonly produced by younger creators with the condition, often based on their own experiences. Conversely, videos on conditions commonly diagnosed older were commonly produced by healthcare professionals providing educational information. Though for conditions affecting older individuals healthcare professionals may be able to create didactic, educational videos, for those affecting younger individuals, it may be beneficial to partner with younger creators, or “influencers,” to produce more viral content. Further studies may expand on these ideas to encompass more facets of healthcare. As this study did not analyze the quality of the information in the videos, future research should also focus on determining the quality of popular content on TikTok and other social media platforms.

An Analysis of Pediatric Ophthalmology Content on TikTok

Abstract:Purpose: To assess pediatric ophthalmology-related information on TikTok (ByteDance). Methods: The 12 most commonly searched terms from the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus website were queried as TikTok hashtags. The top 20 videos for each hashtag were analyzed for views, likes, comments, saves, shares, author status and gender, content, and engagement level ratio (ELR). Subanalysis of the educational videos for quality, understandability and actionability, and medical accuracy using the modified DISCERN (mDISCERN), Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT), and modified Medical Information and Content Index (mMICI) was performed. Results: Analysis of 222 videos revealed a cumulative 191,337,973 views. Patients/families created the most videos (60.4%), followed by optometrists (14.4%), other (laypeople/unknown) (9.0%), ophthalmologists (7.7%), non-ophthalmology physicians (4.5%), and nurses (4.1%). Content was predominantly patient experience (56.8%), followed by educational (25.2%), humor (11.7%), self-promotional (3.6%), procedures (0.9%), other (0.9%), advertisements (0.5%), and career (0.5%). Educational videos had a lower ELR than humorous (3.3 vs 8.2, P < .001) and patient experience (3.3 vs 5.3, P < .001) videos, but more saves than patient experience videos (74 vs 25, P = .009). The mDISCERN scores were greater for videos authored by ophthalmologists (3, P < .001) and optometrists (2.5, P < .001) compared to lay-people (1.5). Ophthalmologist PEMAT understandability scores were greater than non-ophthalmology providers' (95.5% vs 67.4%, P = .002). There was no difference in PEMAT actionability (P = .743) or mMICI scores among the author subgroups (P = .206). Conclusions: Pediatric ophthalmology content on Tik-Tok ranges in quality and understandability. Additional research is needed to help promote posts created by eyecare providers to ensure evidence-based medical content reaches pediatric patients and their families. Abstract:Introduction: Low back pain has become a substantial health problem in all developed countries. Many healthcare professionals and content creators have begun sharing their treatment methods and opinions through social media, especially the video-based platform TikTok. TikTok has been downloaded more than 2.6 billion times with over a billion daily users. Its influence on public health makes it imperative that information be accurate and safe. This study aims to analyze TikTok's most popular content on lower back pain and how orthopaedic surgeons contribute on this growing platform. Objectives: To analyze TikTok's most popular content on lower back pain and how orthopaedic surgeons are and can contribute on this growing platform. Methods: A TikTok search conducted on April 22, 2023, using the terms '#lowerbackpain'and '#lowbackpainrelief,' resulted in numerous videos, 100 of which met inclusion criteria. Videos were included if they were related to the content, had more than 1000 views, were in English, and were not duplicates. Video characteristics were recorded and evaluated for quality by two reviewers using DISCERN. A two-sample t-test was used to assess differences. Results: Overall, the top videos on lower back pain had an average of 2,061,396 views, with a mean DISCERN score of 34. The mean total DISCERN score was 36 and 34 for physicians and nonphysicians, respectively, while the video by the orthopaedic surgeon (n = 1) scored 31. The most recommended treatments included at-home exercises (n = 75) and visiting a chiropractor (n = 4). Conclusion: We find that the information presented by nonphysicians offered quick, at-home fixes to medical problems without offering any research or proven data to support their claims. We cannot overlook Tiktok's immense influence in the realm of orthopaedic health as it has become a sphere of information dissemination and education. Thus, we suggest that there is not necessarily a need for a greater number of surgeons and/or resident physicians to involve themselves on the platform, but rather the involvement of governing bodies and spine societies to put out position statements for our patients.

This issue may potentially be compounded by a growing reliance on social media platforms for health information. Objective: Our objective was to analyze the quality of health information in videos published on dermal filler on TikTok. Methods: We searched three hashtags, #filler (2.4 billion views), #dermalfiller (132.8 million views), and #fillersinjection (137.0 million views) and assessed the top videos returned by TikTok's algorithm that met inclusion criteria. The quality of health information was evaluated using the DISCERN instrument, a validated tool that uses a 1 to 5 scale to assess consumer health information. Results: Videos received a mean DISCERN score of 1.64 (SD 0.33), indicating significantly low quality. 7% of the videos promoted non-FDA-approved uses of filler. Notably, videos posted by physician assistants or physicians received the highest mean scores (1.92 and 1.72) as well as videos categorized as educational (1.99). Conclusion: Dermatologists should be aware of the high viewership of low-quality TikTok videos on dermal filler. Dermatologists shall, therefore, understand the importance of their role in providing education to patients on this topic.

Abstract:Introduction Asthma's global prevalence underscores the need for accessible health information dissemination, especially in the digital age. TikTok, known for its wide reach and diverse content, presents both opportunities and challenges in health information dissemination. This study aims to characterize the quality and reach of asthma-related content on TikTok and introduces the Video Health Information Credibility Score (VHICS) as a novel tool for quality assessment. Materials and methods We used a systematic methodology to analyze the top 100 TikTok videos by the number of likes tagged with #asthma. Data were collected in June 2023 and January 2024 to allow for temporal trend analysis. Videos were evaluated based on engagement metrics (views, likes, comments, shares, and favorites) and quality using the DISCERN instrument. Results Our analysis showed that physician-generated content accounted for a significant proportion of asthma-related videos, with varying levels of engagement. The DISCERN scores, with a range of 1 (lowest) to 5 highest), provided insights into content quality, revealing trends in user engagement and information reliability over time. Temporal analysis indicated changes in content creation and audience interaction. Discussion The study highlights the evolving landscape of digital health communication on TikTok. The introduction of VHICS added depth to the quality assessment of future directions, indicating the necessity for accurate and reliable health information on social media. The findings suggest an imperative for healthcare professionals to address misinformation and leverage digital platforms for patient education effectively. Conclusions TikTok is a significant medium for health information dissemination, with substantial potential for impact in patient education. The introduction of VHICS can enrich the analysis of video content, offering a robust tool for assessing the quality of health information on social media. This study underscores the importance of credible, clear, and audience-relevant health communication in the digital era.
