Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the clinical value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in assessing the high-risk population of hepatic malignant tumor (HMT).METHODS:Three hundred patients with high-risk of HMT were enrolled and examined by CEUS. The clinical data of these patients were collected. A comparative analysis was performed to assess the ability of CEUS for detecting and characterizing lesions in the liver. Kappa test was used for assessing the intra-and inter-observer reliability of CEUS.RESULTS:In 87 enrolled patients with 119 malignant lesions detected by contrast-enhanced MRI, 112 lesions were detected by CEUS and 95 lesions were detected by unenhanced ultrasonography (US). The detection rate of CEUS for HMT was significant higher than that of US (94.1% vs. 79.8%; P < 0.01). More HMT lesions were detected by CEUS than by US in 17.2% patients. One hundred and seventy-seven patients with 215 lesions were confirmed by pathological diagnosis or long-time follow-up. There were 118 malignant and 97 benign lesions. The accuracy of CEUS for differential diagnosis of the liver lesions was 91.6% (197/215), significantly higher than that by US (59.1%, 127/215) (P < 0.01). CEUS improved the accuracy for 35.0% (62/177) patients. For 96 patients with 105 lesions detected for the first time, the agreement of diagnosis by CEUS was 92.4% (97/105). The reliability of CEUS was high (Kappainter = 0.866; Kappaintra = 0.934).CONCLUSIONS:CEUS improves the detection rate and diagnostic accuracy rate of the HMT high-risk population, with a high agreement for diagnosing the new lesions. CEUS may be considered as a first-line method to assess the high-risk population of HMT conveniently, accurately and reliably.

Abstract:Objectives To examine the value of CEUS as a non-invasive tool in detecting lateral neck metastasis (LNM) and the enhancement patterns of malignant lymph nodes (LN) for thyroid cancer patients. Methods Eighty-two consecutive patients, who underwent both preoperative non-enhanced US and CEUS examinations, were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent lateral neck dissection (LND). Enhancement patterns of 102 collected LNs matching to CEUS findings were analyzed. Results CEUS detected LNM in 53 of 65 patients, showing a higher sensitivity and accuracy than that of conventional US ( p = 0.109 and p = 0.154, respectively). Thirteen patients’ surgical procedures were altered by CEUS findings, including nine true positive and four false positive cases. Five patients’ surgical procedures were altered by conventional US findings, including two true positive and three false positive cases. Heterogeneous enhancement, perfusion defects, microcalcification, and centripetal/hybrid enhancement were all specific criteria for malignant LNs in univariate analysis. In multivariate analysis, only heterogeneous enhancement and centripetal/hybrid enhancement were significantly related to LN metastasis ( p = 0.000 and p = 0.037, respectively). Conclusions CEUS may be a potential tool to facilitate conventional US in detecting LNM. Heterogeneous enhancement and centripetal/hybrid enhancement are useful criteria to distinguish between malignant and benign LNs. Abstract:Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is an advanced ultrasound (US) technique utilizing ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) to provide detailed visualization of anatomic and vascular architecture, including the depiction of microcirculation. CEUS has been well-established in echocardiography and imaging of focal hepatic lesions and recent studies have also shown the utility of CEUS in non-hepatic applications like the urinary system. The updated guidelines by the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) from 2018 describe the use of CEUS for non-hepatic applications. CEUS' excellent safety profile and spatial resolution make it a superior modality to conventional US and is often comparable and even superior to CECT in some instances. In comparison to other cross-sectional imaging modalities such as CECT or MRI, CEUS offers a safe (by virtue of non-nephrotoxic US contrast agents), accurate, cost-efficient, readily available, and a quick means of evaluation of multiple pathologies of the urinary system. CEUS also has the potential to reduce the overall economic burden on patients requiring long-term follow-up due to its low cost as compared to CT or MRI techniques. This comprehensive review focuses on the applications of CEUS in evaluating the urinary system from the kidneys to the urinary bladder. CEUS can be utilized in the kidney to evaluate complex cystic lesions, indeterminate lesions, pseudotumors (vs solid renal tumors), renal infections, and renal ischemic disorders. Additionally, CEUS has also been utilized in evaluating renal transplants. In the urinary bladder, CEUS is extremely useful in differentiating a bladder hematoma and bladder cancer when conventional US techniques show equivocal results. Quantitative parameters of time-intensity curves (TICs) of CEUS examinations have also been studied to stage and grade bladder cancers. Although promising, further research is needed to definitively stage bladder cancers and classify them as muscle-invasive or non-muscle invasive using quantitative CEUS to guide appropriate intervention. CEUS has been very effective in the classification of cystic renal lesions, however, further research is needed in differentiating benign from malignant renal masses.

Abstract:Uterine disorders are often presented with overlapping symptoms. The microvasculature holds specific information important for diagnosing uterine disorders. Conventional sonography is an established diagnostic technique in gynecology, but is limited by its inability to image the microvasculature. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), is capable of imaging the microvasculature by means of intravascular contrast agents; that is, gas-filled microbubbles. We provide a literature overview on the use of CEUS in diagnosing myometrial and endometrial disorders, that is, fibroids, adenomyosis, leiomyosarcomas and endometrial carcinomas, as well as for monitoring and enhancing the effectiveness of minimally invasive therapies. A systematic literature search with quality assessment was performed until December 2020. In total 34 studies were included, published between 2007 and 2020.The results entail a description of contrast-enhancement patterns obtained from healthy tissue and from malignant and benign tissue; providing a first base for potential diagnostic differentiation in gynecology. In addition it is also possible to determine the degree of myometrial invasion in case of endometrial carcinoma using CEUS. The effectiveness of minimally invasive therapies for uterine disorders can safely and accurately be assessed with CEUS. In conclusion, the abovementioned applications of CEUS are promising and it is worth further exploring its full potential for gynecology by designing innovative and methodologically high-quality clinical studies.

Abstract:In a previous paper [Hidalgo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 118001 (2009)] it was shown that square particles deposited in a silo tend to align with a diagonal parallel to the gravity, giving rise to a deposit with very particular properties. Here we explore, both experimentally and numerically, the effect on these properties of the filling mechanism. In particular, we modify the volume fraction of the initial configuration from which the grains are deposited. Starting from a very dilute case, increasing the volume fraction results in an enhancement of the disorder in the final deposit characterized by a decrease of the final packing fraction and a reduction of the number of particles oriented with their diagonal in the direction of gravity. However, for very high initial volume fractions, the final packing fraction increases again. This result implies that two deposits with the same final packing fraction can be obtained from very different initial conditions. The structural properties of such deposits are analyzed, revealing that, although the final volume fraction is the same, their micromechanical properties notably differ.

Abstract:On cross-sectional imaging studies performed for other indications, incidental discovery of renal lesions is not uncommon. In daily use, grey-scale ultrasonography (US) and conventional Doppler modes are often the modality of choice for the initial assessment. While simple cysts are fully characterized with US, other lesions require further characterization, which is traditionally obtained by multiphase imaging, such as contrast-enhanced CT and MRI. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has become a powerful additional tool for imaging renal lesions. With its lack of nephrotoxicity, the absence of ionizing radiation, and the ability to evaluate the enhancement pattern of renal lesions quickly and in real- time, CEUS has unique advantages over traditional modes. Established applications are differentiation between solid tumours, pseudolesions, and complex cysts; characterization of complex cysts with different malignant potential, and evaluation of tumor ablation. Microbubble contrast agents are safe. Adverse reactions are rare. This article provides an overview of the current clinical applications of CEUS in characterizing renal masses, discussing advantages and limitations. The aim is to provide the framework for sonologists to make informed decisions regarding this emerging imaging test in appropriate circumstances.

Abstract:The conventional ultrasound and color doppler ultrasound have been a focus in the field of emergency and critical care medicine in recent years,but cannot evaluate the microcirculation perfusion quantitatively.Thus,their diagnostic accuracy in predicting clinical outcomes for critically ill patients is suboptimal.Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is based on conventional ultrasound in which ultrasound contrast agent is used to enhance echo and signal intensity,and helps to characterize tissue perfusion more clearly and dynamically.It has been widely used in the field of emergency and critical care medicine,such as the location and dynamic evaluation of traumatic lesions,renal microcirculation monitoring for the acute kidney injury (AKI) and accuracy evaluation of central venous catheterization.CEUS provides a simple,non-invasive and effective way for clinical diagnosis and treatment of critically ill patients.
Contrast-enhanced Ultrasonography for Evaluation of Cystic Renal Mass: in Comparison to Contrast-Enhanced CT and Conventional Ultrasound

Abstract:Purpose To assess the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in evaluating cystic renal lesions compared with conventional ultrasound (US) and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). Methods One hundred and three patients with complex cystic renal masses underwent preoperative US and CEUS, among which 70 conducted CECT at our institution. The images were analyzed with the number of septa, septa and wall thickness and the presence of solid component, and final diagnosis was made. Results In malignancies, CEUS demonstrated more septa, thicker wall or septa, and more solid components than US and CECT. CEUS permitted categorization of 51.7% (30/58) and 28.6% (10/35) of malignant tumors in higher grade than by US and CECT, respectively. In benign lesions, CEUS detected more septa than CECT and correctly diagnosed benign cysts which appeared as solid lesions in US. CEUS permitted downgrading of 71.1% (32/45) and 17.1% (6/35) of benign lesions compared to US and CECT. The diagnostic performance of CEUS was better than US for benign cystic lesions. The phenomenon that solid-like component by US did not enhance by CEUS was a strong predictor of benign disease, with a positive predictive value (PPV) of 100%. Enhancement of solid, soft tissue by CEUS was highly predictive of malignancy, with a PPV of 100%. Conclusions CEUS was superior to US and CECT in visualizing the number of septa septa and wall thickness, and the presence of solid component of cystic renal lesions. CEUS may play a similar role to CECT in the diagnosis of renal cystic lesions, and better than US.
Conventional and Contrast-enhanced US of the Lung: From Performance to Diagnosis

Abstract:In recent years, lung US has evolved from a marginal tool to an integral component of diagnostic chest imaging. Contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) can improve routine gray-scale imaging of the lung and chest, particularly in diagnosis of peripheral lung diseases (PLDs). Although an underused tool in many centers, and despite inherent limitations in evaluation of central lung disease caused by high acoustic impedance between air and soft tissues, lung CEUS has emerged as a valuable tool in diagnosis of PLDs. Owing to the dual arterial supply to the lungs via pulmonary and bronchial (systemic) arteries, different enhancement patterns can be observed at lung CEUS, thereby enabling accurate differential diagnoses in various PLDs. Lung CEUS also assists in identifying patients who may benefit from complementary diagnostic tests, including image-guided percutaneous biopsy. Moreover, lung CEUS-guided percutaneous biopsy has shown feasibility in accessible subpleural lesions, enabling higher histopathologic performance without significantly increasing either imaging time or expenses compared with conventional US. The authors discuss the technique of and basic normal and pathologic findings at conventional lung US, followed by a more detailed discussion of lung CEUS applications, emphasizing specific aspects of pulmonary physiology, basic concepts in lung US enhancement, and the most commonly encountered enhancement patterns of different PLDs. The value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in cervical cancer assessed in comparison with magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract:Introduction: Currently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most commonly used imaging method in the assessment of the loco-regional extension in cervical cancer. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (abbreviated CEUS) is being investigated as an alternative or complement to the MRI investigation. Objectives: To evaluate the performance of CEUS in identifying loco-regional invasion of cervical cancer compared to MRI, considered the accepted reference standard. Methods: Sixty-one patients with histopathologically confirmed cervical cancer were investigated as part of the pre-treatment workup by CEUS and MRI. We calculated the accuracy and concordance of CEUS versus MRI for tumor invasion in the vagina, bladder, rectum, parametrium, and uterus. For the time-intensity curve associated parameters analyzed (TTPK, AUC, peak intensity, wash in and wash out gradient) we calculated sensitivity, specificity and threshold value of positivity, for tumor invasion at the above-mentioned sites, with graphical representation of the ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve. Results: CEUS was highly accurate in detecting bladder (93.4%, 95% CI: 87.2-99.6) and uterine invasion (88.5%, 95% CI: 80.5-96.5). Substantial agreement between CEUS and MRI was observed for invasion in the uterine body (k=0.77, 95% CI: 0.56-0.98) and bladder (k=0.56, 95% CI: 0.35-0.77). ROC curve analysis for loco-regional invasions showed that the wash in gradient at a cut-off value of 2.23 had a sensitivity of 76% and a specificity of 67% in predicting uterine invasion. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate high accuracy and good agreement between CEUS and MRI regarding especially uterine and bladder invasion. This imaging method could help select patients in early stages for fertility sparing surgery, and also be of use in cases in which early bladder invasion is suspected.

Abstract:The introduction of ultrasound contrast agents has rendered contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) a valuable complementary technique to address clinically significant problems. This pictorial review describes the use of CEUS guidance in abdominal intervention and illustrates such application for a range of clinical indications. Clinical application of CEUS discussed include commonly performed abdominal interventional procedures, such as biopsy, drainage, nephrostomy, biliary intervention, abdominal tumor ablation and its subsequent monitoring, and imaging of vascular complications following abdominal intervention. The purpose of this article is to further familiarize readers with the application of CEUS, particularly its specific strength over alternative imaging modalities, in abdominal intervention.

Abstract:To explore the value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the evaluation of atypical cystic renal lesions. A total of 88 patients with 97 atypical renal cystic lesions were prospectively examined by conventional ultrasound (grey-scale, color and power Doppler flow imaging), CEUS and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT), respectively. The results of three imaging methods were classified into 4 categories based on Bosniak classification system and compared to each other. In 32 of 88 patients who had surgeries, all imaging findings were compared to pathological results. Compared with conventional US, CEUS can not only clearly show atypical cystic wall, the thickness of septum and nodule, but also demonstrate blood flow information and features of these structures The results of CEUS and CECT on atypical cystic lesions had no significant differences(P>0.05). Both CEUS and CECT provided more diagnostic information when compared to conventional ultrasound(P<0.05). In 32 cases with pathological results, the sensitivities of CEUS in the diagnosis of benign, suspicious malignant and malignant cystic lesions were 63.2%, 95.0%, 94.7%; specificities 92.9%, 76.9%, 85.7%; and accuracies 75.8%, 87.9%, 90.0%, respectively. Those were as same as CECT(P>0.05). CEUS provides additional and useful information for evaluation of renal cystic lesions compared to conventional ultrasound. CEUS is a valuable and compatible imaging modality in the classification and diagnosis of atypical renal cystic lesions compared to CECT.
Contrast-enhanced Ultrasonographic Diagnosis of Renal Pelvic Carcinoma

Abstract:Objective To explore the potential value of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography(CEUS) in diagnosis of renal pelvic carcinoma.Methods The ultrasonogram of conventional ultrasound and CEUS were analyzed retrospectively in 22 patients of renal pelvic carcinoma proved pathologically.The size,echo,boundary and color flow signal of renal pelvic lesions were observed with conventional ultrasound.The enhancement modality and phase of tumors were also observed with CEUS,including wash-in and wash-out time,as well as the perfusion appearances.Results The maximum diameters ranged from 1.5 cm to 8.5 cm in 22 renal pelvic tumors.Conventional ultrasound detected flat mass in 7 tumors,irregular mass in 15 tumors;the same side hydronephrosis in 11 patients.Color Doppler flow imaging(CDFI) disclosed fairly rich flow signal of 5 tumors,a small amount of flow signal around tumor in 9 tumors and no-flow signal in the rest tumors.CEUS detected the cortical phase enhancement in all renal pelvic tumors,including synchronously enhancement in 8 tumors and delayed enhancement in 14 tumors.In peak time,hypoechogenicity compared to the normal renal cortex was showed in 18 tumors,hyperechogenicity in 3 tumors and isoechogenicity in 1 tumor.Fast wash-out in medulla phase was displayed in 20 tumors,isochronously wash-out in 1 tumor and delayed wash-out in 1 tumor.The diagnostic accuracy of the conventional ultrasound and CEUS was 63.64%(14/22) and 81.82%(18/22),respectively.Conclusion CEUS can depict blood flow supply and improve the diagnostic rate of renal pelvic carcinoma.
Clinical Application Value of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in the Diagnosis of Renal Space-Occupying Lesions

Abstract:Objective: To study the clinical application value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in diagnosing renal space-occupying lesions. Methods: Sixty-seven patients with renal space-occupying lesions detected by routine ultrasound examination received the contrast-enhanced ultrasound examination. When observing the perfusion mode of the mass, we analyzed the perfusion characteristics of contrast-enhanced ultrasound and compared them with the surgical pathological results. Results: Sixty-seven lesions, which were identified in 67 patients with renal space-occupying lesions, included 55 renal malignant tumors and 12 benign ones. The sensitivity of qualitative diagnosis by CEUS imaging was 96.4%, the specificity was 66.7%, and the accuracy was 91.0%. Conclusion: The real-time blood supply of renal space-occupying lesions helps judge their nature according to the enhancement mode. It has high clinical application value in diagnosing benign and malignant lesions.
Clinical Value of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasonography in the Characterization of Focal Liver Lesions: a Prospective Multicenter Trial.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) is increasingly accepted in clinical settings for diagnostic imaging of focal liver lesions (FLLs). This study aimed to assess the efficacy of CEUS in the characterization of FLLs in comparison with final diagnosis based on gold standard assessment.METHODS:The study was approved by the local ethics committee and participating patients provided written informed consent. A total of 148 patients with 164 FLLs were studied. Unenhanced ultrasonography (US) and CEUS were performed using fundamental and harmonic imaging, respectively. Contrast enhancement was assessed during the arterial, portal and late vascular phases after intravenous administration of contrast (SonoVue, Bracco, Italy). Sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of US and CEUS were compared in identifying the lesion as benign, malignant or indeterminate and its actual tumor type. Final diagnosis was established by biopsy (129/164), MR imaging (11/164) or medical history (24/164).RESULTS:When compared to the gold standard, the number of indeterminate diagnoses was reduced from 56.7% (93/164) as assessed by fundamental imaging to 6.1% (10/164) after SonoVue enhanced US examination. Sensitivity and specificity improved from 49% and 25% at baseline US to 93% and 75% with CEUS, respectively (P<0.01). Diagnostic accuracy of CEUS was 88% in contrast to 41% of baseline US.CONCLUSION:SonoVue enhanced US improves the characterization of FLLs and may limit the need for further investigations.
Clinical value of quantitative analysis of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant pelvic tumors

Abstract:Background: Cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer are among the top 10 most common cancers in women, with ovarian cancer in particular being considered a "silent killer". Therefore, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment constitute important means of care for women's health. This study investigated the clinical value of the quantitative analysis of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant pelvic tumors.Methods: CEUS was performed on 151 patients with pelvic masses. Subsequently, a qualitative diagnosis was completed using the image enhancement features and tumor parameters. A multiparametric analysis of CEUS images was performed, which included the following parameters: arrival time (AT), time to peak (TTP), peak intensity (PI), and ascent slope (AS). In addition, the qualitative diagnostic efficiency of CEUS was assessed in a multiparametric analysis, and the results were compared with pathological findings.Results: The patients in the malignant group were older (P=0.001) and had larger lesion PI values (P<0.01) than those in the benign group. The PI difference (PId) and the AS difference (ASd) showed statistical differences (P<0.01) between the myometrium and lesion tissues in the same patient. Moreover, the PId and ASd showed the largest receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the ROC curve (AUC), with sensitivities of 90.9% and 91.7% and specificities of 86.4% and 72.5%, respectively.Conclusions: The quantitative analysis of CEUS provides a new, simpler, and more accurate method for the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant pelvic masses in clinical practice. The sensitivities and specificities of PId and ASd were higher compared to other parameters from the same patient.

Diagnostic Performance of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in Testicular Space-Occupying Lesions: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract:Purpose Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has been increasingly used for the diagnostic identification of neoplasms due to its ability to visualize the microvascularization of lesions. In the study of testicular abnormalities, the appropriate use of CEUS can improve the diagnostic accuracy of conventional gray-scale ultrasound and color Doppler ultrasound (CDUS). The purpose of this study is to comprehensively evaluate the diagnostic performance of CEUS in testicular space-occupying lesions. Methods A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases was conducted from the inception of each database to November 16, 2022 for relevant studies. The required data were extracted, and the methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool. The diagnostic value of CEUS was assessed by calculating the combined sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, and diagnostic odds ratio, and a summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve was used to conduct this meta-analysis. Results A total of six studies with 354 testicular space-occupying lesions were included in the analysis. The results showed that CEUS could provide additional useful information for the diagnosis of testicular space-occupying lesions, with a sensitivity of 0.92 (95% CI:0.82, 0.97), specificity of 0.91 (95% CI:0.80, 0.96), diagnostic odds ratio of 114 (95% CI:25, 528), respectively, and an overall diagnostic accuracy expressed as area under the SROC curve (AUC) of 0.97 (95% CI:0.95–0.98). Significant heterogeneity was seen in the sensitivity with I 2 = 82.53% (95% CI:69.44–95.61). Subgroup analysis revealed that the proportion of infertile patients selected may be the source of heterogeneity. Conclusion CEUS can be used to diagnose testicular space-occupying lesions more accurately and improve diagnostic accuracy when the conventional US cannot accurately differentiate the type of lesion. In particular, CEUS should be recommended for the identification of microscopic lesions so that physicians can provide patients with more appropriate interventions to avoid unnecessary orchiectomy.

[Cardiac output and its distribution in waking rats with acute streptozotocin diabetes].

Abstract:Cardiac output and its regional distribution were studied in conscious rats with acute 24-hour streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes using the labeled microsphere technique. Rats were made diabetic with a single intravenous injection of STZ (60 mg/kg). One day post-STZ all rats were divided into two groups in accordance with the results of urine analysis: rats with ketonuria (n = 6) and rats without ketonuria (n = 7). All the experimental animals had similar blood glucose concentration 24 hours after STZ-injection: 408 +/- 15 and 421 +/- 16 mg/100 ml in rats with and without ketonuria, respectively. All STZ-treated rats showed significant alterations in the systemic hemodynamics one day post-STZ. They included a slight hypotension, a decrease in the total peripheral resistance (TPR) and an increase in the cardiac index (CI) and stroke volume (SV) compared to pre-injection level. Rats with ketonuria showed more prominent decrease in TPR (57 +/- 6 vs. 38 +/- 4% in rats without ketonuria, p < 0.05) and more prominent increase in CI (102 +/- 18 vs. 41 +/- 8% in rats without ketonuria, p < 0.05) and SV (105 +/- 19 vs. 32 +/- 10% in rats without ketonuria, p < 0.05). In both experimental groups the blood flow was significantly increased in the small intestine, heart, brain and kidneys compared to preinjection level. Additionally, rats with ketonuria had increased blood flow in the skin and skeletal muscle (by 0.076 +/- 0.019 and 0.056 +/- 0.020 ml/min/g, respectively, p < 0.05).

Abstract:Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is distinguished from CT and MRI by the use of microbubble ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) with intravascular blood pool distribution. When performing CEUS, low-intensity ultrasound allows real-time tissue subtraction imaging, whereas high-intensity ultrasound leads to microbubble destruction, enabling visualization of the contrast inflow pattern. CEUS has exceptional contrast resolution that enables the detection of even minimal blood flow, achieving very high NPV for ruling out vascular perfusion and providing high frame rates in the evaluation of tissue perfusion dynamics. UCAs undergo hepatic metabolism and pulmonary clearance, ensuring safety in patients with renal impairment. CEUS excels in distinguishing solid from cystic renal masses, with higher sensitivity than CT or MRI for detection of lesion enhancement. CEUS can aid the further characterization of both solid and cystic lesions and may have particular applications in the surveillance of cystic masses and surveillance after renal cell carcinoma ablation. This review describes the use of CEUS to help characterize indeterminate renal masses, based on the authors' institutional experience. The article highlights key differences between CEUS and CT or MRI, and provides practical insights for performing and interpreting CEUS of renal masses.
