Abstract:Introduction: Immunotherapies have shown great promise, but are not effective for all tumors types and are effective in less than 3% of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDAC). To make an immune treatment that is effective for more cancer patients and those with PDAC specifically, we genetically engineered Salmonella to deliver exogenous antigens directly into the cytoplasm of tumor cells. We hypothesized that intracellular delivery of an exogenous immunization antigen would activate antigen-specific CD8 T cells and reduce tumors in immunized mice. Methods: To test this hypothesis, we administered intracellular delivering (ID) Salmonella that deliver ovalbumin as a model antigen into tumor-bearing, ovalbumin-vaccinated mice. ID Salmonella delivers antigens by autonomously lysing in cells after the induction of cell invasion. Results: We showed that the delivered ovalbumin disperses throughout the cytoplasm of cells in culture and in tumors. This delivery into the cytoplasm is essential for antigen cross-presentation. We showed that co-culture of ovalbumin-recipient cancer cells with ovalbumin-specific CD8 T cells triggered a cytotoxic T cell response. After the adoptive transfer of OT-I CD8 T cells, intracellular delivery of ovalbumin reduced tumor growth and eliminated tumors. This effect was dependent on the presence of the ovalbumin-specific T cells. Following vaccination with the exogenous antigen in mice, intracellular delivery of the antigen cleared 43% of established KPC pancreatic tumors, increased survival, and prevented tumor re-implantation. Discussion: This response in the immunosuppressive KPC model demonstrates the potential to treat tumors that do not respond to checkpoint inhibitors, and the response to re-challenge indicates that new immunity was established against intrinsic tumor antigens. In the clinic, ID Salmonella could be used to deliver a protein antigen from a childhood immunization to refocus pre-existing T cell immunity against tumors. As an off-the-shelf immunotherapy, this bacterial system has the potential to be effective in a broad range of cancer patients.

Abstract:We report a method of cancer immunotherapy using an attenuated Salmonella typhimurium strain engineered to secrete Vibrio vulnificus flagellin B (FlaB) in tumor tissues. Engineered FlaB-secreting bacteria effectively suppressed tumor growth and metastasis in mouse models and prolonged survival. By using Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5)-negative colon cancer cell lines, we provided evidence that the FlaB-mediated tumor suppression upon bacterial colonization is associated with TLR5-mediated host reactions in the tumor microenvironment. These therapeutic effects were completely abrogated in TLR4 and MyD88 knockout mice, and partly in TLR5 knockout mice, indicating that TLR4 signaling is a requisite for tumor suppression mediated by FlaB-secreting bacteria, whereas TLR5 signaling augmented tumor-suppressive host reactions. Tumor microenvironment colonization by engineered Salmonella appeared to induce the infiltration of abundant immune cells such as monocytes/macrophages and neutrophils via TLR4 signaling. Subsequent secretion of FlaB from colonizing Salmonella resulted in phenotypic and functional activation of intratumoral macrophages with M1 phenotypes and a reciprocal reduction in M2-like suppressive activities. Together, these findings provide evidence that nonvirulent tumor-targeting bacteria releasing multiple TLR ligands can be used as cancer immunotherapeutics.

Abstract:Murine B16 melanoma cell line is poorly immunogenic and highly aggressive. We recently reported that the transmembrane staphylococcal enterotoxin A (TM-SEA) anchors onto B16 cells and stimulates lymphocyte proliferation. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether vaccination with B16 cells bearing membrane-anchored TM-SEA fusion protein could cause tumor-specific immunity. Mice in the therapeutic vaccination group received B16 tumor inoculations, followed by treatment with B16-TM-SEA vaccine or control vaccines. Mice in the prophylactic vaccination group were given B16-TM-SEA vaccine or control vaccines, followed by challenge with wild type B16 or control EL4 cells. Significant tumor growth inhibition, prolongation of survival, and marked augmentation of NK and CTL activities were observed in mice which received B16-TM-SEA vaccine as compared to controls. Overall, our results suggest that the TM-SEA cellular vaccine is a novel and effective strategy for cancer immunotherapy.

Abstract:AbstractStimulation of tumor-specific responses in both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells has been a challenge for effective tumor vaccines. We designed a vaccine vector containing the AIDA-1 autotransporter and DNA vaccine elements, generating a murine melanoma vaccine that was delivered by the attenuated Salmonella strain SL7207. Growth of murine subcutaneous melanoma was significantly inhibited by intranasal immunization with the Salmonella tumor vaccine. The vaccine activated tumor-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses, with increased T-cell proliferation, tumor antigen–specific Th1 cytokine production, increased percentages of tetramer positive cells, and cytotoxicity. CD4+ or CD8+ T-cell depletion resulted in the loss of antitumor activity of the Salmonella tumor vaccine, suggesting that the efficacy of the vaccine was dependent on both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Lung metastasis of the tumor was also inhibited by vaccine treatment. Similarly, the percentages of tumor-specific Th1 cytokine production by CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in the spleen, tumor, and bronchoalveolar lavage were increased after vaccine treatment. Tumor-specific proliferation of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells was also promoted by the vaccine. Tetramer staining and cytotoxicity assay showed enhanced tumor-specific CD8+ T-cell response after vaccine treatment. Therefore, the Salmonella tumor vaccine could activate both tumor-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell responses. Abstract:Cancer is a devastating disease and a large socio-economic burden. Novel therapeutic solutions are on the rise, although a cure remains elusive. Application of microorganisms represents an ancient therapeutic strategy, lately revoked and refined via simultaneous attenuation and amelioration of pathogenic properties. Salmonella Typhimurium has prevailed in preclinical development. Yet, using virulent strains for systemic treatment might cause severe side effects. In the present study, we highlight a modified strain based on Salmonella Typhimurium UK-1 expressing hexa-acylated Lipid A. We corroborate improved anti-tumor properties of this strain and investigate to which extent an intra-tumoral (i.t.) route of infection could help improve safety and retain advantages of systemic intravenous (i.v.) application. Our results show that i.t. infection exhibits therapeutic efficacy against CT26 and F1.A11 tumors similar to a systemic route of inoculation. Moreover, i.t. application allows extensive dose titration without compromising tumor colonization. Adverse colonization of healthy organs was generally reduced via i.t. infection and accompanied by less body weight loss of the murine host. Despite local application, adjuvanticity remained, and a CT26-specific CD8+ T cell response was effectively stimulated. Most interestingly, also secondary tumors could be targeted with this strategy, thereby extending the unique tumor targeting ability of Salmonella. The i.t. route of inoculation may reap the benefits of systemic infection and aid in safety assurance while directing potency of an oncolytic vector to where it is most needed, namely the primary tumor.

Abstract:Synergistic combinations of immunotherapeutic agents can improve the performance of anti-cancer therapies but may lead to immune-mediated adverse effects. These side-effects can be overcome by using a tumor-specific delivery system. Here, we report a method of targeted immunotherapy using an attenuated Salmonella typhimurium (SAM-FC) engineered to release dual payloads: cytolysin A (ClyA), a cytolytic anti-cancer agent, and Vibrio vulnificus flagellin B (FlaB), a potent inducer of anti-tumor innate immunity. Localized secretion of ClyA from SAM-FC induces immunogenic cancer cell death and promotes release of tumor-specific antigens and damage-associated molecular patterns, which establish long-term antitumor memory. Localized secretion of FlaB promotes phenotypic and functional remodeling of intratumoral macrophages that markedly inhibits tumor metastasis in mice bearing tumors of mouse and human origin. Both primary and metastatic tumors from bacteria-treated female mice are characterized by massive infiltration of anti-tumorigenic innate immune cells and activated tumor-specific effector/memory T cells; however, the percentage of immunosuppressive cells is low. Here, we show that SAM-FC induces functional reprogramming of the tumor immune microenvironment by activating both the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system and can be used for targeted delivery of multiple immunotherapeutic payloads for the establishment of potent and long-lasting antitumor immunity.

Abstract:Attenuated Salmonella typhimurium possess the ability to stimulate innate immune responses and preferentially allocate within the solid tumor. These two main characteristics make attenuated Salmonella one of the most attractive vehicles for development of vaccine and also targeted cancer therapies. However, location of Salmonella prevents the process of antigen presentation. Salmonella Type III secretion system can be utilized to circumvent this problem because this system secretes the protein it encoded outside the cells. Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) is referred to as an “immunochaperone” for its capacity to elicit tumor‐specific adaptive immune responses in the form of Hsp70‐TAA (tumor associated antigen) complex. Hsp70 facilitates the cross‐presentation of exogenous antigens through its receptor on antigen‐presenting cells and therefore activates an antigen‐specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response, which can directly contribute to potent anti‐tumor immunity. Here, we designed a novel therapeutic vaccine utilizing the type III secretion system and Hsp70 to deliver and present the tumor‐specific antigen. This live recombinant bacteria vaccine, when administrated orally, successfully broke the immune tolerance, induced a specific CTL response against tumor cells, and therefore revealed protective and therapeutic effects against generation and growth of B16F10 melanoma in C57BL/6J mice. Salmonella Breaks Tumor Immune Tolerance by Downregulating Tumor Programmed Death-Ligand 1 Expression

Abstract:Immunotherapy is becoming a popular treatment modality in combat against cancer, one of the world’s leading health problems. While tumor cells influence host immunity via expressing immune inhibitory signaling proteins, some bacteria possess immunomodulatory activities that counter the symptoms of tumors. The accumulation of Salmonella in tumor sites influences tumor protein expression, resulting in T cell infiltration. However, the molecular mechanism by which Salmonella activates T cells remains elusive. Many tumors have been reported to have high expressions of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), which is an important immune checkpoint molecule involved in tumor immune escape. In this study, Salmonella reduced the expression of PD-L1 in tumor cells. The expression levels of phospho-protein kinase B (P-AKT), phospho-mammalian targets of rapamycin (P-mTOR), and the phospho-p70 ribosomal s6 kinase (P-p70s6K) pathway were revealed to be involved in the Salmonella-mediated downregulation of PD-L1. In a tumor-T cell coculture system, Salmonella increased T cell number and reduced T cell apoptosis. Systemic administration of Salmonella reduced the expressions of PD-L-1 in tumor-bearing mice. In addition, tumor growth was significantly inhibited along with an enhanced T cell infiltration following Salmonella treatment. These findings suggest that Salmonella acts upon the immune checkpoint, primarily PD-L1, to incapacitate protumor effects and thereby inhibit tumor growth.

Abstract:The aortic arch branching patterns of 49 male macaques (Macaca fascicularis) were described and classified according to the classification systems of DeGaris, and the incidence of each pattern was determined. The most frequent pattern observed was a two-branch type in which a truncus communis of intermediate length (7 to 11 mm) and the left subclavian artery constituted the only aortic arch branches. Five patterns not previously described in the cynomolgus were observed. Comparison of the cynomolgus and the rhesus macaques indicated a significant difference between the two species with the rhesus generally having a shorter truncus communis.
Repolarizing neutrophils via MnO2 nanoparticle-activated STING pathway enhances Salmonella-mediated tumor immunotherapy

Abstract:Engineered Salmonella has emerged as a promising microbial immunotherapy against tumors; however, its clinical effectiveness has encountered limitations. In our investigation, we unveil a non-dose-dependent type of behavior regarding Salmonella's therapeutic impact and reveal the regulatory role of neutrophils in diminishing the efficacy of this. While Salmonella colonization within tumors recruits a substantial neutrophil population, these neutrophils predominantly polarize into the pro-tumor N2 phenotype, elevating PD-L1 expression and fostering an immunosuppressive milieu within the tumor microenvironment. In order to bypass this challenge, we introduce MnO2 nanoparticles engineered to activate the STING pathway. Harnessing the STING pathway to stimulate IFN-β secretion prompts a shift in neutrophil polarization from the N2 to the N1 phenotype. This strategic repolarization remodels the tumor immune microenvironment, making the infiltration and activation of CD8+ T cells possible. Through these orchestrated mechanisms, the combined employment of Salmonella and MnO2 attains the synergistic enhancement of anti-tumor efficacy, achieving the complete inhibition of tumor growth within 20 days and an impressive 80% survival rate within 40 days, with no discernible signs of significant adverse effects. Our study not only unveils the crucial in vivo constraints obstructing microbial immune therapy but also sets out an innovative strategy to augment its efficacy. These findings pave the way for advancements in cell-based immunotherapy centered on leveraging the potential of neutrophils.

Abstract:BACKGROUND. The authors have previously reported a tumor cell vaccine modified with superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) and its antitumor effect. The tumor cell vaccines modified with multiple immune activators frequently elicited stronger immune responses against established tumors than single-modified vaccines. METHODS. The authors explored the effectiveness of a tumor cell vaccine transduced with immune activators, dual-modified using the protein transfer technique. First, a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored murine B7.1 (mB7.1GPI) and a transmembrane-anchored SEA (TM-SEA) were genetically generated. Then, the murine lymphoma EL4 cells were dual modified with the incorporation of mB7.1-GPI and TM-SEA onto the cell surface. Flow cytometry and laser confocal microscopy showed that the incorporation of B7.1 and SEA molecules onto EL4 cells was quite stable. RESULTS. The dual-modified tumor cell vaccine EL4/mB7.1-GPI + TM-SEA elicited significantly stronger antitumor immune responses both in vitro and in vivo when compared with the single-modified tumor cell vaccines EL4/mB7.1-GPI and EL4/TM-SEA. CONCLUSIONS. The results of the current study validated the novel approach for preparing tumor cell vaccines modified with dual immune active molecules using the protein transfer technique, and supported the feasibility and effectiveness of the dual-modified tumor cell vaccine. Oral Delivery of Tumor‐targeting Salmonella Exhibits Promising Therapeutic Efficacy and Low Toxicity

Abstract:Tumor‐targeting bacteria have been developed as powerful anticancer agents. Salmonella typhimurium VNP20009, a representative tumor‐targeting strain, has been systemically administered as a single‐agent therapy at doses of 1 × 106 to 3 × 106 colony‐forming unit (cfu)/mouse, or in combination with other antitumor agents at doses of 1 × 104 to 2 × 105 cfu/mouse. Recently, we reported that oral delivery of VNP20009 at the dose of 1 × 109 cfu/mouse induced significant anticancer effects comparable to that induced by systemic administration of this strain at 1 × 104 cfu/mouse. To further address the efficacy and safety of oral administration of bacteria, here we performed a systemically comparative analysis of anticancer efficacy and toxicity of VNP20009 administered: (i) orally at a dose of 1 × 109 cfu/mouse (VNP9‐oral); (ii) intraperitoneally at a dose of 1 × 104 cfu/mouse (VNP4‐i.p.); or (iii) intraperitoneally at a dose of 1 × 106 cfu/mouse in tumor‐free and tumor‐bearing murine models. The results showed that VNP9‐oral, similar to VNP4‐i.p., induced significant tumor growth inhibition whereas VNP6‐i.p. induced better anticancer effect in the B16F10 melanoma model. Among three treatments, VNP9‐oral induced the mildest and reversible toxicity whereas VNP6‐i.p. resulted in the most serious and irreversible toxicities when compared to other two treatments. Moreover, the combination of VNP9‐oral with a low dose of chemotherapeutics produced comparable antitumor effects but displayed significantly reduced toxicity when compared to VNP6‐i.p. The findings demonstrated that oral administration, as a novel avenue in the application of bacteria, is highly safe and effective. Moreover, the present preclinical study should facilitate the optimization of bacterial therapies with improved anticancer efficacy and reduced adverse effects in future clinical trials. Abstract:Spinal cord stimulation (DCS) has proved effective in different types of Deafferentation Pain. Long-term results are good in 60-85% of cases. DCS improves microcirculation and ischemia in cases of inoperable peripheral vascular diseases. Advantages of this method are: Absence of severe complications and estimation of the effect during the test phase. - Nevertheless, other neurosurgical possibilities (destructive pain surgery, spinal/cerebral application of medicaments) continue to preserve their indications.

Abstract:Tumor immunotherapy is often hindered by unresponsive cold tumor microenvironments (TME). Although Salmonella-based immunotherapy has shown potential in overcoming these cold immune environments, safety concerns remain. Our study introduces a genetically reprogrammed Salmonella typhimurium strain (OASL) with a dual safety lock to enhance safety and modify immunosuppressive TME, sensitizing tumors to immunotherapies. We propose using OASL to alter the cold TME and locally release therapeutic cargos such as PDL1 nanobodies and tumor-specific neoantigen peptides identified through bioinformatic algorithms, activating immune cells within the tumor while minimizing side effects. We selected YB1, an obligate anaerobic Salmonella strain that thrives in hypoxic environments, as our base strain and incorporated a self-lysis genetic circuit for controlled bacterial growth and cargo release upon reaching a specific population density within the tumor core. We assembled and evaluated the self-lysis gene circuit in vitro, documenting the event using an optical density (OD) reader and confirming OASL's ability to express genetic cargos through western blot analysis. We then investigated OASL's therapeutic effect in vivo and characterized TME changes using flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry staining. Our results indicate that OASL undergoes lysis and releases cargos upon reaching a specific population density in vitro. Additionally, OASL-delivered neoantigen peptides elicited a tumor-specific immune response in vivo. OASL also demonstrated the capacity to modify the TME and restore sensitivity to PDL1 in previously unresponsive tumors, enhancing therapeutic effects. Citation Format: Yige He, Jiandong Huang. Herein, we engineered attenuated Salmonella typhimurium VNP20009 with gene circuits to synthetize granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and interleukin 7 (IL-7) within tumors, which recruited dendritic cells (DCs) and enhanced T cell priming to elicit anti-tumor response. The bacteria-produced GM-CSF stimulated the maturation of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs), while IL-7 promoted the proliferation of spleen isolated T cells and inhibited cytotoxicity T cell apoptosis in vitro . Virtually, engineered VNP20009 prefer to colonize in tumors, and inhibited tumor growth by enhancing DCs and T cell infiltration. Moreover, the tumor-toxic GZMB + CD8 + T cell and IFN- γ + CD8 + T cell populations conspicuously increased with the treatment of engineered bacteria. The combination of GM–CSF–IL-7-VNP20009 with PD-1 antibody synergistically stunted the tumor progress and stasis. Salmonella-Mediated Cytolethal Distending Toxin Transfer Inhibits Tumor Growth

Abstract:The Salmonella enterica serovar Choleraesuis (S.C.) has potential as an antitumor agent because of its tumor-targeting characteristics. S.C. can also be used for specific delivery of therapeutic agents and continuous release during replication. Previously, we successfully used S.C. as a vector to transfer a therapeutic gene and oncolytic virus, which suggested that modified S.C. is suitable for incorporating other antitumor agents into a single system. Cytolethal distending toxin B (CdtB) produced by Campylobacter jejuni can induce tumor cell apoptosis. Here we coated CdtB with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) to yield PAH-CdtB. Treatment of cells with PAH-coated CdtB induced apoptosis, demonstrating that the compound retained antitumor activity. Furthermore, S.C. coated with PAH-CdtB (CdtB-S.C.) maintained tumor-targeting activity and had an enhanced antitumor effect. Measurement of the cytotoxic effect of CdtB-S.C. in vitro in a tumor cell line showed increased apoptosis whereas treatment of tumor-bearing mice with CdtB-S.C. reduced tumor growth and prolonged survival. Taken together, our results provide evidence that Salmonella carrying CdtB could have application for the treatment of tumors.

Abstract:Engineered bacteria-mediated antitumor approaches have been proposed as promising immunotherapies for cancer. However, the off-target bacterial toxicity narrows the therapeutic window. Living microbes will benefit from their controllable immunogenicity within tumors for safer antitumor applications. In this study, a genetically encoded microbial activation strategy is reported that uses tunable and dynamic expression of surface extracellular polysaccharides to improve bacterial biocompatibility while retaining therapeutic efficacy. Based on screening of genes associated with Salmonella survival in macrophages, a novel attenuated Salmonella chassis strain AIS (htrA gene-deficient) highly enriched in tumors after administration and rapidly cleared from normal organs are reported. Subsequently, an engineered bacterial strain, AISI-H, is constructed based on the AIS strain and an optimized quorum-sensing regulatory system. The AISI-H strain can achieve recovery of dynamic tumor-specific bacterial virulence through a novel HTRA-RCSA axis-based and quorum-sensing synthetic gene circuit-mediated increase in extracellular polysaccharide content. These strains act "off" in normal organs to avoid unwanted immune activation and "on" in tumors for precise tumor suppression in mice. The AISI-H strain shows significant tumor inhibition and potent activation of anticancer immunity in a melanoma mouse model. The AISI-H strain exhibits excellent biocompatibility. This bacterial regulation strategy expands the applications of microbe-based antitumor therapeutics.

Abstract:Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumor in men and is normally associated with increased serum levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Therefore, PSA is one potential target for a prostate cancer vaccine. In this study we analyzed the functionality of new bacterial PSA vaccines, expressed and secreted via the hemolysin (HlyA) secretion system of Escherichia coli, the prototype of Type I secretion systems (T1SS) using an attenuated Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium aroA strain as carrier. The data demonstrate that a bacterial live vaccine encompassing T1SS in combination with cholera toxin subunit B can be successfully used for delivery of PSA to induce cytotoxic CD8+ T-cell responses resulting in an efficient prevention of tumor growth in mice.

Abstract:The bacterial superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) stimulates T cells bearing certain TCR Vβ domains when binding to MHC II molecules, and is a potent inducer of CTL activity and cytokine production. Antibody-targeted SEA such as C215 Fab-SEA and C242 Fab-SEA has been investigated for cancer therapy in recent years. We have previously reported significant tumor inhibition and prolonged survival time in tumor-bearing mice treated with a combination of both C215Fab-SEA and Ad IL-18 (Wang et al., Gene Therapy 8:542–550, 2001). In order to develop SEA as an universal biological preparation in cancer therapy, we first cloned a SEA gene from S. aureus (ATCC 13565) and a transmembrane (TM) sequence from a c-erb-b2 gene derived from human ovarian cancer cell line HO-8910, then generated a TM-SEA fusion gene by using the splice overlap extension method, and constructed the recombinant expression vector pET-28a-TM-SEA. Fusion protein TM-SEA was expressed in E. coli BL21(DE3)pLysS and purified by using the histidine tag in this vector. Purified TM-SEA spontaneously associated with cell membranes as detected by flow cytometry. TM-SEA stimulated the proliferation of both human PBLs and splenocytes derived from C57BL/6 (H-2b) mice in vitro. This study thus demonstrated a novel strategy for anchoring superantigen SEA onto the surfaces of tumor cells without any genetic manipulation.

Abstract:Although strains of attenuated Salmonella typhimurium and wild-type Escherichia coli show similar tumor-targeting capacities, only S. typhimurium significantly suppresses tumor growth in mice. The aim of the present study was to examine bacteria-mediated immune responses by conducting comparative analyses of the cytokine profiles and immune cell populations within tumor tissues colonized by E. coli or attenuated Salmonellae. CT26 tumor-bearing mice were treated with two different bacterial strains: S. typhimurium defective in ppGpp synthesis (ΔppGpp Salmonellae) or wild-type E. coli MG1655. Cytokine profiles and immune cell populations in tumor tissue colonized by these two bacterial strains were examined at two time points based on the pattern of tumor growth after ΔppGpp Salmonellae treatment: 1) when tumor growth was suppressed ('suppression stage') and 2) when they began to re-grow ('re-growing stage'). The levels of IL-1β and TNF-α were markedly increased in tumors colonized by ΔppGpp Salmonellae. This increase was associated with tumor regression; the levels of both IL-1β and TNF-α returned to normal level when the tumors started to re-grow. To identify the immune cells primarily responsible for Salmonellae-mediated tumor suppression, we examined the major cell types that produce IL-1β and TNF-α. We found that macrophages and dendritic cells were the main producers of TNF-α and IL-1β. Inhibiting IL-1β production in Salmonellae-treated mice restored tumor growth, whereas tumor growth was suppressed for longer by local administration of recombinant IL-1β or TNF-α in conjunction with Salmonella therapy. These findings suggested that IL-1β and TNF-α play important roles in Salmonella-mediated cancer therapy. A better understanding of host immune responses in Salmonella therapy may increase the success of a given drug, particularly when various strategies are combined with bacteriotherapy.
