Abstract:Abstract Chinese herbal medicine is widely cultivated in Southwest China, where the soil cadmium (Cd) contamination of farmland is more serious than that in China as a whole. In this study, Polygonatum sibiricum was exposed to Cd at concentrations of e −1 , e 0 , e 2 , and e 4 mg/kg for 30, 60, and 90 days, and the physiological stress responses, Cd and mineral element uptake, antioxidant enzyme activities, and content changes of pharmaceutical ingredients (polysaccharides) were analyzed to decipher the feasibility of safe utilization in Cd-contaminated soil. The results show that the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) in the aboveground part was always higher than that in the underground part. The underground part of Polygonatum sibiricum mobilizes nonenzymatic systems to facilitate the synthesis of polysaccharides (PCP1, PCP2) with antioxidant properties to cope with Cd stress. Mineral elements (P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn) significantly ( p < 0.05) changed after 90 d of cultivation. In particular, the changes in the iron and zinc content were significantly correlated ( p < 0.05) with the activities of SOD and POD. Soil Cd at e 0 mg/kg can guarantee the safe production and utilization of Polygonatum sibiricum , and the stimulation of Cd promotes polysaccharide synthesis and biomass growth.

Abstract:Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua (PC) and Bletilla striata (BS) are widely used and planted as tuber traditional Chinese medicinal materials (TCMMs). Cadmium (Cd) is one of the major causes of soil pollution and challenge to the quality and safety of TCMMs. Understanding the absorption and distribution of Cd is important for addressing the risks posed by its residues. As a result, the higher Cd translocation factor (TF) results in the lower Cd bioconcentration factor (BCF) in the PC tuber than that of BS attributed to a lower Cd concentration in the PC tuber, which guaranteed its safe utilization and edible safety under 1 mg·kg−1 Cd soil. Cd stress overall activated peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and water-extractable polysaccharides in PC (PCP1) to exhibit better antioxidation, while the superoxide dismutase (SOD) in BS increased by approximately 206–277% to alleviate more severe oxidative damage. Particularly, Cd induced an increase in PCP1 higher than that of water-extractable polysaccharides of BS (BSP1) by approximately 335% to 1351%. PC exhibited effective strategies for alleviating Cd toxicity, including transferring Cd to nonmedicinal parts, increasing polysaccharides, and synergistically activating the enzymatic antioxidant system. This study expands the application for the safe utilization of low-Cd contaminated soil and provides novel insights for tuber TCMMs to alleviate Cd toxicity.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Compared to other soil remediation technologies, Cd-contaminated farmland soil with low cadmium accumulation (LCA) plant-based safe utilization is more catered to developing countries with food in high demand. Hormesis, which describes the fortification of plant growth performance by a low level of environmental stress, can be innovatively used to achieve increases in crop yield and plant functional components, thus amplifying the safe utilization efficiency of low Cd-contaminated soil by LCA plants. In the present study, the growth and physiological responses of Polygonatum sibiricum, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, were investigated under laboratory conditions of gradient Cd dosage concentrations and times. As a result, the growth performance of P. sibiricum reached the peak of an inverse U-shaped curve of hormesis under e0 mg kg−1 and 9 months of Cd stress, with elevations in tuber biomass (medicinal part), plant height and polysaccharide content (medicinal components) of 143%, 25% and 90%, respectively. Meanwhile, trace Cd accumulation (0.41 mg kg−1) in the tuber guaranteed medicinal edible safety. In addition, Cd-induced hormesis in P. sibiricum was verified to be overcompensated by antioxidation systems. In conclusion, such 'win-win' results, including low Cd accumulation and enhancement of plant pharmaceutical value, provided medicinal herbs with a possibility for safe soil utilization.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine materials (TCMMs) are widely planted and used, while cadmium (Cd) is a widespread pollutant that poses a potential risk to plant growth and human health. However, studies on the influences of Cd on TCMMs have been limited. Our study aims to reveal the antioxidation-related detoxification mechanism of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua under Cd stress based on physiology and metabolomics. The results showed that Cd0.5 (total Cd: 0.91 mg/kg; effective Cd: 0.45 mg/kg) induced hormesis on the biomass of roots, tubers and aboveground parts with increases of 22.88%, 27.12% and 17.02%, respectively, and significantly increased the flavonoids content by 57.45%. Additionally, the metabolism of caffeine, glutamine, arginine and purine was upregulated to induce hormesis in Cd0.5, which enhanced the synthesis of resistant substances such as spermidine, choline, IAA and saponins. Under Cd2 stress, choline and IAA decreased, and fatty acid metabolites (such as peanut acid and linoleic acid) and 8-hydroxyguanosine increased in response to oxidative damage, resulting in a significant biomass decrease. Our findings further reveal the metabolic process of detoxification by antioxidants and excessive Cd damage in TCMMs, deepen the understanding of detoxification mechanisms related to antioxidation, and enrich the relevant theories of hormesis induced by Cd.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has accumulated a wealth of ecological wisdom and is regarded as an outstanding cultural and medical resource in China. However, in the context of serious environmental pollution, the potential harm caused by TCM materials (TCMMs) due to toxic heavy metals has seriously affected the sustainable development of TCM. Cadmium (Cd) is an internationally recognized heavy metal contaminant. In this paper, 270 reports on Cd in TCMMs were screened from 1969 publications covering 243 species in 81 families. According to the source of the TCMMs, the data were divided into the following categories: aboveground part, bark, flower and fruit, herb, leaf and rhizome. The temporal dynamics of the Cd content and its correlations with the habitats and categories (parts) of TCMMs were also studied. The results show that 22.05 % of the investigated TCMM samples exceeded the relevant domestic standards (Cd≤0.3 mg/kg), among which the maximum Cd content was 17.75 mg/kg. Myrtaceae and Syzygium aromaticum were the family and species with the highest mean Cd content, respectively. Regarding the source of TCMMs of great concern, the mean Cd content of TCMMs decreased in the order of herb > aboveground part > flower and fruit > leaf > rhizome > bark. In addition, in terms of the spatiotemporal distribution, the spatial distribution of the mean Cd content of TCMMs was significantly higher on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, followed by Southwest China. When comparing different times, more serious Cd pollution of TCMMs existed after 2000, and the highest mean Cd content was observed in 2000–2004. In summary, soil acidity must be decreased and the cultivation conditions of Cd-hyperaccumulators such as Ligusticum chuanxiong and Lonicera japonica must be modified, in conjunction with a scientific health risk assessment, to ensure the sustainable development of TCMMs.

Abstract:As medicinal plants can accumulate harmful metals from the native soil, people's consumption of these materials may cause the human body to accumulate toxic metal elements. This has given rise to people's concerns about the quality and safety of Chinese medicinal materials. This research aims to determine the levels of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg and Pb in four medicinal plant species (Aster tataricus L.f., Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge, Radix Aucklandiae, Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi) and their native soil. All samples were collected from Qian'an city, beside Yanshan Mountain Range in Tangshan city, east Hebei Province, north China. The contents of heavy metals we detected in the soil conformed to the current limits. However, the Cd and Hg in the soil had a very high potential ecological risk because of their contents higher than the base level of local soil. The contents of Cu, Cd, Hg and Pb in some medicinal herbs exceeded the standards. The content of Cu in Radix Aucklandiae exceeded the standard by 3 times, and others exceeded the standard by less than one time. The comprehensive health risk assessment of heavy metals with chronic non-carcinogenic effects for human body showed that none of the four medicinal herbs can create a health risk. Thus, there is no strong positive correlation between heavy metal pollution in medicinal herbs and that in the native soil. Further research should be investigated to the connection between the heavy metal levels in the soil and plants, and the comprehensive effects of soil, air and irrigation water on heavy metal pollution of Chinese herbal medicines. We also recommend that Chinese herbal medicines should be cultivated and gathered only from controlled or uncontaminated areas.

Abstract:Bletilla striata (Thunb.) Reichb.f. has shown rather extraordinary medicinal and economic value in recent years. However, the artificial cultivation of B. striata faces quite a lot of obstacles, especially the quality degradation and heavy metal pollution problems. Cadmium (Cd) in particular, is reported to generally exceed the standard in the artificial cultivation of B. striata. So far, little attention has been paid to analyze the effects of heavy metals on the growth and the medicinal treatment efficacy of B. striata. Herein, we investigate the physio-ecological response of B. striata under gradient Cd concentration treatment: Control (0.285 mg kg−1); Tr-1 (0.655 mg kg−1); Tr-2 (1.285 mg kg−1); Tr-3 (7.675 mg kg−1); Tr-4 (54.885 mg kg−1), so as to provide a reference for the study of the Cd response regulation on B. striata. In this work, we examined the biomass, total carbon, total nitrogen, and content of B. striata polysaccharides (BSP, the functional component of B. striata), as well as the absorption proportion of Cd in B. striata. Based on the preliminary research, ecological risk assessment and human health risk assessment were allocated. Experiments were conducted in two batches (2018 and 2019, sampling in the same season) with the following findings: (1) The biomass showed no pronounced differences between the treatments or the sampling dates, only reached significant decrease at 54.885 mg kg−1 (Tr-4) soil Cd concentration in 2019; (2) The total carbon of B. striata under Cd treatment was in line with the Hormesis effect and reached a peak at 0.655 mg kg−1 (Tr-1) soil Cd concentration; (3) The total nitrogen content was generally promoted under Cd treatment with the highest content at 1.225 mg kg−1 (Tr-2); (4) The total BSP content in two sampling years are both sorted in decreasing order: Tr-4 < Tr-3 < Tr-2 < Tr-1 < Control; (5) The Cd content in Bletillae Rhizoma (tuber of B. striata) under 0.655 mg kg−1 soil Cd treatment was within the threshold stipulated in Chinese Pharmacopoeia in 2018 batch and in 2019 batch, only the control group was qualified with a safe plantation limit of Cd. The results of ecological risk assessment showed moderate toxic risk under Tr-1 (0.655 mg Cd kg−1) and the human health risk assessment indicated negligible toxic effects on human health. Overall, the soil Cd concentration should be lower than 0.655 mg kg−1, if safe cultivation, medicinal effect of B. striata and human health risk are taken into consideration.

Abstract:Bletilla striata is an endangered medicinal plant the habitats of which are polluted by cadmium (Cd). Nutrient management is a potential way to mitigate Cd toxicity, providing reference for B. striata artificial cultivation. Pot experiments were undertaken to examine the effect of five levels of Cd concentration (control: 0.28 mg/kg; I: 0.37 mg/kg; II: 1.00 mg/kg; III: 7.39 mg/kg; IV: 54.6 mg/kg) on the temporal dynamics of nutrient allocation in B. striata components. The results showed that the content and accumulation of Cd increased significantly in all tissues of Bletilla striata as Cd concentration was increasing, and most accumulated in the roots and slightly transferred to the aboveground parts, while tubers were less likely to accumulate Cd. Excessive cadmium accumulation under long-term exposure reduced the biomass of all tissues of B. striata, and the yield was not significantly affected when cultivated in soil with a concentration of Cd ≤ 1 mg/kg. Potassium (K) was quickly transferred from the root to other tissues in response to the Cd stress. The absorption of zinc (Zn) increased at first and then decreased with increased Cd concentration. According to Pearson correlation analysis, a mechanism is suggested that Cd accumulation affects the absorption of nutrients but is positively and significantly correlated with translocation factor of K and Zn in the tuber. This may imply that B. striata tends to promote the absorption of nutrient elements to adapt to the Cd enrichment in tubers and to compensate for the interrupted mineral nutrition metabolism.
Refined Cumulative Risk Assessment of Pb, Cd, and as in TCM Decoction Based on Bioavailability through In Vitro Digestion/MDCK Cells

Abstract:In this study, the oral bioavailability of Pb, Cd, and As in three types of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) and TCM decoctions were investigated through in vitro PBET digestion/MDKC cell model. Furthermore, a novel cumulative risk assessment model associated with co-exposure of heavy metal(loid)s in TCM and TCM decoction based on bioavailability was developed using hazard index (HI) for rapid screening and target organ toxicity dose modification of the HI (TTD) method for precise assessment. The results revealed that the bioavailability of Pb, Cd, and As in three types of TCM and TCM decoction was 5.32-72.49% and 4.98-51.97%, respectively. After rapid screening of the co-exposure health risks of heavy metal(loid)s by the HI method, cumulative risk assessment results acquired by TTD method based on total metal contents in TCMs indicated that potential health risks associated with the co-exposure of Pb, Cd, and As in Pheretima aspergillum (E. Perrier) and Oldenlandia diffusa (Willd.) Roxb were of concern. However, considering both the factors of decoction and bioavailability, TTD-adjusted HI outcomes for TCMs in this study were <1, indicating acceptable health risks. Collectively, our innovation on cumulative risk assessment of TCM and TCM decoction provides a novel strategy with the main purpose of improving population health.
[Safety evaluation of heavy metals contaminated Xiaochaihu Tang using health risk assessment model].

Abstract:In order to further improve the quality and safety evaluation standards of traditional Chinese medicine compound preparation,Xiaochaihu Tang compound preparations were selected to analyze the pollution level of heavy metals deeply,and the potential health risks were evaluated under taking such kind of compound preparations. In this study,the contents of copper( Cu),arsenic( As),cadmium( Cd),mercury( Hg),and lead( Pb) in different Xiaochaihu Tang compound preparations were determinated by the method of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry( ICP-MS). Moreover,combined with target hazard coefficient method and in vitro artificial system,the bioaccessibility and health risk level was investigated in three main consumption ways including powder,decoction and granule. The result was showed that,under the maximum residual limit set by International Standard Organization,only one batch of raw herb was eight times exceeded the Hg MRL,however,in water decoctions and granules,the heavy metal residue rate was reduced to 2. 02%( Hg in granules)-42. 85%( Cd in granules). So,the heavy metal pollutions and health risks can be reduced to safe region in spite of the serious pollution in raw herbs. Besides,the THQ and CR values of the three consumption methods were lower than the standard values of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of each heavy metal. It can be seen that even if the heavy metals in the raw herbs exceed the standard,the use of Xiaochaihu Tang decoction and granules can reduce the harm of heavy metals to the human body. Above all,the establishment of this health risk assessment model can be provided experimental basis and reference value for improving the safety evaluation standard of other heavy metals contained traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) compound preparations,and further improving the quality control methods of other different toxic compounds in clinical use.

Spotlight on the accumulation of heavy metals in Traditional Chinese medicines: A holistic view of pollution status, removal strategies and prospect

Abstract:The accumulation of heavy metal in circulating TCMs has attracted widespread attention because the security and therapeutic efficacy are inevitably imperiled by the survival ecological environment and human production activities. How to reduce the pollution level and improve the toxicity damage becomes an urgent issue. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current status of heavy metal contamination over a thousand types of single herbal (botanical, animal and mineral medicines) and TCM preparations published over nearly two decades. The survey revealed that growth ecosystems (soil, water sources), anthropogenic factors (harvesting, processing, storage), specific varieties and medicinal parts utilized as well as the inherent resistance capacity are the key factors that affect the accumulation of heavy metals in TCMs. And Pb, Cu and Cr are the major cumulative elements for botanicals, while mineral and animal medicines are dominated by As and Cu elements, respectively. Ongoing efforts aimed at mitigating the level and translocation rate of heavy metals by optimized cultivation processes, appropriate processing methodologies and advanced adsorption techniques are effective removal strategies. And the prospects of TCMs as a detoxifying agent for heavy metal toxicity damage posed development potential. Besides, the correlation between the speciation of arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr) and their toxicity should also be elaborated in order to provide effective references for standardizing drug dosage and cycle. And the imperative from the perspective of improving limitations standards of HMs for animal medicines, external preparations and folk medicines as well as exploring the interaction mechanisms between heavy metals and active ingredients of TCMs provides the direction for the follow-up study.
The environmental risk threshold (HC5) for Cd remediation in Chinese agricultural soils

However, the lack of a unified evaluation framework complicates the assessment of remediation efficiency of different practices. Here, we evaluated the general extraction method (GEM) of available Cd in nine typical soil types by comparing extraction agents, including CaCl2, EDTA, Mehlich-Ⅲ, HCl and DTPA. The safe grain concentration of different agricultural products from National Food Safety Standards Limits of Contaminants in Food (GB 2762-2022) was then applied to understand soil limited available Cd concentration based on dose-response curves. We also derived environmental risk threshold (HC5) values for Cd remediation in agricultural soils by constructing species sensitivity distribution (SSD) curves. The results showed that Mehlich-Ⅲ best predicted Cd accumulation in crops (with 76.5% of explanation of grain Cd) and was selected as the GEM of soil available Cd for subsequent analyses. The regression coefficient (R2) of dose-response curves fitting between Cd absorption in crop tissues and soil available Cd extracted by GEM based on 30 different crop species varied from 51.0% to 79.5%, and the derived limit concentration of soil available Cd based on standard GB 2762-2022 was 0.18-0.76 mg‧kg-1. An HC5 of 0.19 mg‧kg-1 was then calculated, meaning that a concentration of available Cd in agricultural soil below 0.19 mg‧kg-1 ensures that 95% of agricultural products meet the quality and safety requirements of standard GB 2762-2022. The prediction model was well verified in the field test, indicating that can correctly estimate the soil available Cd based on the content of Cd in plant. This study provides a robust scientific framework for deriving the risk threshold for Cd remediation in agricultural soils and could be quite useful for establishing soil remediation standards.

Novel Integrated Tiered Cumulative Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Food Homologous Traditional Chinese Medicine Based on a Real-Life-Exposure Scenario

Abstract:In order to serve population health better, the first integrated tiered decision tree for cumulative risk assessment of co-exposure of Pb-, Cd-, and As-associated health risks in food homologous traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was designed, after measuring their concentrations by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Basically, our three-step decision tree involving hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), and target-organ toxicity dose (TTD) modification of the HI method was developed to evaluate the potential risks of 949 batches of 15 types of food homologous TCM. To acquire a real-life exposure scenario, the cumulative risk assessment model was established by optimizing key parameters, such as ingestion rates, frequency, and duration of exposure to food homologous TCM based on questionnaire data. As a result, the mean concentrations of Pb, Cd, and As in 949 batches of food homologous TCM were 0.896, 0.133, and 0.192 mg/kg, respectively. The HQ values of As for Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels and Houttuynia cordata Thunb. were 1.04 and 1.01, respectively, for females. Other HQs of Pb, Cd, or As in food homologous TCM were lower than 1 for both males and females. However, after rapid screening of the co-exposure health risks of heavy metals by the HI method, cumulative risk assessment results acquired by TTD modification of the HI method implied that the potential health risks associated with the co-exposure of Pb, Cd, and As in Lonicera japonica Thunb. and Houttuynia cordata Thunb. ingested as both TCM and food were of concern in the clinic. Additionally, the cumulative risks of Pb, Cd, and As in Mentha canadensis L., Chrysanthemum indicum L., and Zaocys dhumnades (Cantor) only used as food exceeded the human tolerance dose. Collectively, our innovation on the tiered strategy of decision tree based on a real-life exposure scenario provides a novel approach engaging in the cumulative risk assessment of heavy metals in food homologous TCM. All in all, such effort attempts to scientifically guide the rational use of TCM in the treatment of the complex diseases and the improvement of population health.
Physiological and biochemical responses in a cadmium accumulator of traditional Chinese medicine Ligusticum sinense cv. Chuanxiong under cadmium condition

Abstract:Ligusticum sinense cv. Chuanxiong (L. Chuanxiong), one of the widely used traditional Chinese medicines (TCM), is currently facing the problem of excessive cadmium (Cd) content. This problem has significantly affected the quality and safety of L. Chuanxiong and become a vital factor restricting its clinical application and international trade development. Currently, to solve the problem of excessive Cd, it is essential to research the response mechanisms of L. Chuanxiong to Cd stress. However, there are few reports on its physiological and biochemical responses under Cd stress. In this study, we conducted the hydroponic experiment under 25 μM Cd stress, based on the Cd content of the genuine producing areas soil. The results showed that 25 μM Cd stress not only had no significant inhibitory effect on the growth of L. Chuanxiong seedlings but also significantly increased the chlorophyll a content (11.79%) and root activity (51.82%) compared with that of the control, which might be a hormesis effect. Further results showed that the absorption and assimilation of NH4+ increased in seedlings under 25 μM Cd stress, which was associated with high photosynthetic pigments. Here, we initially hypothesized and confirmed that Cd exceedance in the root system of L. Chuanxiong was due to the thickening of the root cell wall, changes in the content of the cell wall components, and chelation of Cd by GSH. There was an increase in cell wall thickness (57.64 %) and a significant increase in cellulose (25.48%) content of roots under 25 μM Cd stress. In addition, L. Chuanxiong reduced oxidative stress caused by 25 μM Cd stress mainly through the GSH/GSSG cycle. Among them, GSH-Px (48.26%) and GR (42.64%) activities were significantly increased, thereby maintaining a high GSH/GSSG ratio. This study preliminarily reveals the response of L. Chuanxiong to Cd stress and the mechanism of Cd enrichment. It provides a theoretical basis for solving the problem of Cd excessive in L. Chuanxiong.
Innovative health risk assessment of heavy metals in Chinese herbal medicines based on extensive data

Abstract:In the present study, the concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), and copper (Cu) in 2245 batches of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) were measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). We developed a risk assessment strategy that assessed the heavy metal-associated health risk of CHMs based on our large dataset. Using a combination of the mean and 95th percentile (P95) values of the chronic daily intake (CDI), hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), and lifetime cancer risk (CR), the health risks of the average exposure population and the high exposure population were estimated, respectively. To obtain a precise and realistic risk assessment, the exposure frequency and exposure duration were determined using questionnaire data from 20,917 randomly selected volunteers. Additionally, given the specific ingestion characteristics of CHMs, the safety factor and the transfer rates of heavy metals were highlighted as well. The concentrations of Pb, Cd, As, Hg, and Cu in 2245 batches of CHMs were 1.566, 0.299, 0.391, 0.074, and 8.386 mg/kg, respectively. The mean HI values indicated that consumption of most CHMs would not pose an unacceptable health risk to the average exposure population, except for argy wormwood leaf (1.326), morinda root (2.095), plantain herb (1.540), chrysanthemum flower (1.146), and Indian madder root (2.826). In addition, CR assessment for Pb and As revealed that, for the average exposure population, the risk of developing cancers was lower than the acceptable levels (1 × 10−4) in the clinic. However, the P95 of the HI and CR values indicated that more attention should be paid to the systemic effects of CHMs in terms of both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks for the high exposure population. Furthermore, in order to serve population health better, national and international guidelines have now been established. The risk assessment strategy developed in this study is the first of its kind, and contributed to the risk assessment, guidelines, and safety standards for heavy metals in CHMs.

Abstract:Trace element contamination in Chinese herbal medicines has been recognized as a potential health concern for consumers. To assess the health risk to the herb-consuming population, nine trace elements (Cu, Cd, Cr, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sr, Zn, and As) were investigated based on their concentrations in three common medicinal plants (Astragalus membranaceus, Codonopsis tangshen, and Paris polyphylla var. chinensis) and soils from unpolluted and polluted areas in the Sichuan Province, China. The results showed that the metal content differed significantly in medicinal plants and soils from unpolluted versus polluted areas. No significant differences in metal accumulation were observed for these CHMs grown in either unpolluted or polluted areas. Evaluation of the health risk index suggested that soil ingestion and medicated diet represented the dominant exposure routes, indicating that trace metal(loids) in local soil might pose potential risks through soil-food chain transfer. Hazard quotient values for AM (1.473) and CT (1.357) were higher than the standard value (HQ > 1), whereas the hazard indices for PC, AM, and CT were 13.18, 14.33, and 14.01 times higher than the safe limit (HI > 1) in the polluted area, indicating non-cancer-related health hazards. Ingestion of soil was responsible for 36.39 to 91.06% of the total cancer risk and medicated diet accounted for 6.35 to 62.71%, compared with inhalation and dermal contact, suggesting carcinogenic health risks in herbs from polluted soils. In this study, Pb showed relatively higher non-carcinogenic risks, while Cr and Ni posed the highest cancer risks. Therefore, we propose more effective measures, which should be considered for Cr, Ni, and Pb remediation in soil to reduce their pollution in the studied areas.

Abstract:This study assessed the concentrations of five heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn in both soil and a traditional Chinese medicine Cortex Moutan collected from 6 typical sites, growing this medicine, in China. The potential health risks associated with those heavy metals were also assessed. It is shown that Cd content in soils from five of the six sites was higher than the environmental Quality Standard for Soils of China (EQSS). The cortex from a copper tailings area in Tongling (marked as TLC) accumulated much higher amounts of heavy metals than the other sites. Calculated pollution index implied that the herbs in TLC were mildly contaminated by Pb, Cd, and Cu. Hazard quotient (HQ) indicated the intake of Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn was safe by cortex consumption, but noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of all metals in Cortex Moutan in hillside near the copper tailings (marked as TLB) and TLC were higher. The results suggested more attention should be paid to the planting area near the mining tailing, and in order to ensure the quality of the herbal medicines, the regions where this herb is grown should be at distance from the mining tailing area.
[Effects of Intercropping of Brassica chinenesis L. and Tagetes patula L. on the Growth and Cadmium Accumulation of Plants]

Abstract:A pot experiment was conducted to reveal the effects of intercropping a low-cadmium (Cd) accumulating cultivar and a Cd hyperaccumulator on the safe utilization and phytoextraction of Cd-polluted soils. Two cultivars of Brassica chinensis L. (the low-Cd accumulating cultivar Huajun, and the common cultivar Hanlü), were intercropped with four cultivars of Tagetes patula L. (Dwarf Red, Dwarf Yellow, Tall Red, and Tall Yellow). We examined the biomass, photosynthetic characteristics, and Cd accumulation in the plants and available Cd content and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in the soils. The results show that under the intercropping treatments, the biomass of B. chinensis decreased significantly and those of T. patula increased significantly, compared with the monoculture treatments. When intercropped with T. patula, the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate in the leaves of B. chinensis decreased significantly, compared with the monoculture treatments. When Huajun was intercropped with Dwarf Red, the shoot Cd content of Huajun significantly decreased by 14.5%, and that of Dwarf Red increased significantly by 36.5% compared with the monoculture. Under the other intercropping treatments, the shoot Cd content of B. chinensis increased significantly, or showed no significant change, and that of T. patula showed no significant change. Under the intercropping treatments, the total amount of Cd in the shoot of B. chinensis decreased significantly, and that of T. patula increased significantly, compared with the monoculture. There were no significant differences in the Cd extraction ratios between the intercropping treatments and the monoculture of T. patula. The shoot Cd content of B. chinensis was significantly correlated with soil available Cd content and DOC content (P<0.01 and P<0.05, respectively). In conclusion, the intercropping treatment of Huajun and Dwarf Red significantly reduced shoot Cd content in B. chinensis and increased that in T. patula, and it did not affect the Cd extraction ratio. This is suitable for the safe utilization and phytoextraction of Cd-polluted soils.

Abstract:The content of toxic heavy metals (THMs), including lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg), was determined in a total of 10,245 samples for 279 types of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) using a validated inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method. The exceeding rate (ER) for the four THMs were calculated based on diverse permissible limits (PLs) established by different organizations and national pharmacopeias. Cluster analysis was used to classify the degree risk of THMs contamination according to the calculated ER. Results revealed that Cibotii rhizome, Selaginellae herba, Morindae officinalis radix, Asprellae ilicis radix, and Toxicodendri resina exhibited high-degree risk of Pb contamination. Eckloniae/Laminariae thallus, Spirodelae herba, and Naturalis indigo possessed high-degree risk of As contamination. Tetrapanacis medulla, Centipedae herba, Cyathulae radix, Linderae radix, Meretricis/Cyclinae concha, and Tabanus displayed high-degree risk of Cd contamination. Toxicodendri resina has high-degree risk of Hg contamination. In addition, six types of CHM, including Asprellae ilicis radix, Toxicodendri resina, Eckloniae/Laminariae thallus, Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, Haematitum, and Hedyotidis diffusae herba, may have non-carcinogenic health risk after consumption of raw materials because the calculated hazard quotient and hazard index were over 1.0. In summary, these data provide useful information about THMs contamination in CHM.
