Abstract:Objectives: The aim of the study was to establish the relationship between cognitive trauma processing and secondary traumatic stress (STS) in professionals working with people after traumatic experiences. Methods: The results obtained from 500 persons representing five professional groups (therapists, paramedics, nurses, social workers and probation officers) were analyzed. The were more women (76.4%) than men (23.6%). The average age of the respondents is 44.09 years (SD = 9.85). The study used two standard measurement tools, i.e., the Secondary Traumatic Stress Inventory (STSI), and the Cognitive Processing of Trauma Scale (CPOTS), allowing assessment of five remedial strategies (positive cognitive restructuring, downward comparison, resolution/acceptance, denial, regret) and a survey developed for the use of the research. Results: The obtained results indicated that medical personnel, including paramedics and nurses, revealed the highest intensity of STS, and therapists - the lowest. STS was associated mainly with negative coping strategies, such as regret and denial, which play the predictive role for STS. Conclusions: There is a need to provide psychological assistance to professionals working with people after traumatic experiences, especially medical staff.

Abstract:Exposure to the traumatic experiences of others can lead to secondary traumatization (STS), a condition comprising trauma-related symptoms. There is a lack of evidence on efficient ways to mitigate STS among professionals working with refugees, who are secondarily exposed to traumatic content. This study examines the latent structure of coping mechanisms and explores the predictive power of coping strategies for STS in a sample of professionals working with refugees. A total of 288 participants (age: M = 34.01, SD = 10.03; 57.3% female) working with refugees completed the COPE Inventory and Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale. Factor analysis of the COPE Inventory showed that coping mechanisms are grouped around four interrelated factors-Problem-focused, Socially supported emotion-focused, Avoidant, and Passive coping-which accounted for 46.7% of the variance. The regression model showed that Avoidant coping positively predicts negative alterations in cognition, mood, and reactivity (NACMR) and intrusions, and Passive coping was positively associated with NACMR and avoidance. Problem-focused coping was related to lower NACMR and avoidance, while Socially supported emotion-focused coping was not associated with any of the STS symptoms. In total, coping factors accounted for 10.8%, 6.3%, and 4.3% of the variance of NACMR, intrusions, and avoidance, respectively. The study provides a foundation for programs to mitigate STS among professionals working with refugees.

Abstract:Cel pracy Celem pracy było ustalenie związku między pośrednią ekspozycją na traumę, empatią, poznawczym przetwarzaniem traumy a objawami wtórnego stresu traumatycznego (Secondary Traumatic Stress - STS) u kobiet – zawodowo pomagających osobom po doświadczeniu przemocy. Metoda Analizie poddano wyniki uzyskane od 154 uczestniczek reprezentujących trzy grupy zawodowe (terapeutki, pracownice socjalne i kuratorki sądowe). Wiek badanych mieścił się w przedziale 26-67 lat. Zastosowano Inwentarz Wtórnego Stresu Traumatycznego, Skalę Wrażliwości Empatycznej oraz Skalę Poznawczego Przetwarzania Traumy. Dodatkowo opracowano ankietę zawierającą pytania dotyczące wskaźników ekspozycji na wtórną traumę: staż pracy, liczba godzin w tygodniu poświęconych na pracę z osobami po doświadczeniu traumy przemocy, nakład pracy. Wyniki Badania wykazały, że objawy STS są pozytywnie powiązane ze wskaźnikami ekspozycji na traumę, empatią i poznawczymi strategiami radzenia sobie. Ponadto poznawcze strategie pośredniczą w związku między wtórną ekspozycją na traumę a objawami STS. Wnioski W celu zmniejszenia objawów STS wskazane może być częstsze praktykowanie technik samoopieki oraz zmiana stosowanych poznawczych strategii radzenia sobie z negatywnych na pozytywne.

Assessing Positive Posttraumatic Changes Among Professionals Working With Trauma Victims: The Secondary Posttraumatic Growth Inventory

Abstract:By providing constant help to trauma victims, the helpers themselves run the risk of secondary traumatization. As a rule, research focuses on the negative consequences of secondary trauma. Meanwhile, there are also positive changes in the form of Secondary Posttraumatic Growth (SPTG). The present study describes the design and testing of a new tool for measuring SPTG. Thirty items were presented to employees from five different professions constantly working with trauma victims (N = 580). A 4-factor solution (PCA) turned out to be clear and unambiguously interpretable. After excluding items based on their component loading and redundancy, the tool was pared down to 12 items. A separate sample used in confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) yielded good fit indexes. The four dimensions were given the following designations: 1. New challenges and an increase in professional competences, 2. Increase in spiritual experiences and a greater sense of responsibility for others, 3. Greater confidence in oneself and appreciating life, 4. Increased acceptance and actions for others. Cronbach’s alpha was .90. The inventory demonstrated high stability, as indicated by the two-month test–retest stability value (.78). The theoretical validity was estimated by comparing SPTGI scores with other measures which should be associated with secondary positive changes. The SPTGI is a new, reliable, and valid instrument for measuring positive posttraumatic changes among professionals exposed to secondary trauma. It can be useful in scientific research and in clinical practice.
The role of resiliency and coping strategies in occurrence of positive changes in medical rescue workers

Abstract:Background: Working in the emergency services entails exposure to traumatic events; however, their effects can be both negative and positive. Among the factors determining posttraumatic growth (PTG) after an experienced trauma are the personal resources and coping strategies. The purpose of the research was to investigate the role of resiliency and coping strategies with stress in posttraumatic growth in a group of medical rescue workers. Materials and methods: Data of 80 male medical rescuers who have experienced traumatic event in their worksite were analyzed. The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Resiliency Measurement Scale and Inventory to Measure Coping Strategies with Stress - Brief-Cope were used in the study. Statistical tests such as t test, correlation and path analysis were used. Results: The tested medical rescue workers revealed the medium level of PTG. Active coping, planning, turning to religion, seeking of social support, both emotional and instrumental, and self-distraction positively correlated with posttraumatic growth. A more significant role in the process of PTG appeared to be played by avoidance and emotional-focused strategies Although resiliency does not directly affect posttraumatic growth, it may strengthen it through the choice of coping strategies. Conclusions: In the process of posttraumatic growth avoidance strategies seem to play more important role than strategies focusing on the problem.
Contributing factors to secondary traumatic stress and vicarious posttraumatic growth in therapists

Abstract:Alongside the recognized potential negative repercussions of working as a psychological therapist, there is growing interest in the potential positive impacts of engaging in such work. The current study used a cross-sectional online survey design to explore the impact of a range of demographic, work-related, and compassion-related factors on levels of secondary traumatic stress (STS) and vicarious posttraumatic growth (VPTG) in an international sample of 359 psychological therapists. Hierarchical multiple regressions demonstrated that burnout, lower levels of self-compassion, having a personal trauma history, reporting a higher percentage of working time with a trauma focus, and being female were the statistically significant contributors to STS scores, explaining 40.8% of the variance, F(9, 304) = 23.2, p <.001. For VPTG, higher compassion satisfaction, higher self-compassion, higher STS, a higher percentage of working time with a trauma focus, fewer years qualified, being male, and having a personal trauma history were all statistically significant contributors, explaining 27.3% of the variance, F (10, 304) = 11.37, p <.001. The findings illustrate the potential risk and protective factors for developing STS and clarify factors that may increase the likelihood of experiencing VPTG. Implications for psychological therapists and the organizations and institutions for which they work are considered along with potential directions for future research in the discussion.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose Secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth have been recognized as psychological reactions that might occur among the medical staff in general, and among nurses in particular. Nurses in the field of medical rehabilitative care might reveal such reactions as their work involves stress and traumatic situations. Coping strategies might either alleviate or exacerbate work-related stress experienced by nurses. The aims of the current study were to explore the link between secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth exhibited by nurses in the field of medical rehabilitative care, and to examine the link between problem-focused coping strategies and emotion-focused coping strategies to secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth. Material and method One hundred and fifty-three rehabilitative nurses completed self-report questionnaires regarding personal data, post-traumatic growth, secondary traumatization, ways of coping strategies and personal negative life events. Results Correlation matrix for the path analysis model revealed positive significant correlation between secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth. Both, problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping strategies were linked to secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth. Conclusions Nurses employed in a medical rehabilitation hospital who cope via problem-focused strategies as well as emotion-focused strategies in their work, might reveal secondary traumatization but might simultaneously benefit from post-traumatic growth.

SummarySocial workers have had a pivotal role in handling the challenges faced by people dealing with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Supporting clients who have undergone traumatic experiences during a global pandemic may increase the risk of experiencing secondary traumatic stress. This study examined two protective factors that may be key in the association between stress and social workers' secondary traumatic stress: Psychological capital (internal protective factor) and satisfaction with supervision (external factor). The study sample included 104 Israeli social workers who worked in their profession during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. A regression-based path analysis was conducted to test the moderation model with the PROCESS software.FindingsSelf-efficacy significantly moderated the association between perceived stress and intrusion; increasing self-efficacy decreases perceived stress's effect on intrusion. Although no significant moderating effect was found for the existence of supervision, the interaction between perceived stress and satisfaction with supervision was significant in predicting secondary trauma.ApplicationsSocial workers' unions must work to improve the quality of supervision and raise awareness of the importance of supervision in general and particularly during times of crisis. Manageable workloads, a reasonable balance between work and home, and verbal and financial encouragement to seek professional psychological assistance would all be to the advantage of social workers at risk for secondary trauma.

Abstract:Death care work consists of dealing with traumatic events frequently, if not daily. This type of exposure is considered characteristic of the profession and can lead to significant negative consequences such as secondary traumatic stress. However, sometimes positive changes can occur as a result of experiencing trauma, which is referred to as vicarious posttraumatic growth. The aim of the present study is to investigate the role of vicarious posttraumatic growth (VPTG) in the relationship between secondary traumatic stress (STS) and work ability (WA) in a sample of 231 death care workers in northern Italy. Regression analysis with interaction was performed using PROCESS. The results showed a negative association between STS and WA and a positive association between VPTG and WA. The interaction between STS and VPTG was also statistically significant. The moderating role of VPTG was partially confirmed by the analysis: at low and moderate VPTG levels, the conditional effect was negative and statistically significant, while at high VPTG, STS exposure had no significant and negative effect on WA, as if VPTG had some kind of protective role against STS. These results provide new insights into the role of VPTG in work environments with daily trauma exposure, such as death care.
Secondary traumatic stress and vicarious post-traumatic growth among social workers who have worked with abused children

Abstract:Summary Working with abused children can have positive and negative implications for social workers. Some of these implications have been conceptualized as secondary traumatic stress and vicarious post-traumatic growth. The current study examined the question of whether these two phenomena share similar contributing factors. Based on the social-ecological theory and previous studies on secondary traumatic stress, we examined the contribution of personal factors and level of exposure to trauma (i.e. years of work experience, professional exposure to child abuse, mastery) and environmental factors (i.e. social support, supervision, and role stress) to the explained variance of secondary traumatic stress and post-traumatic growth, with the goal of understanding these two potential outcomes. This cross-sectional study comprised 255 social workers who worked with abused children. Findings The results showed that despite the correlation between the two outcomes—post-traumatic growth and secondary traumatic stress—they shared only one common predictive factor: the extent of social workers’ exposure to abused children. Role stress was correlated positively, and mastery was correlated negatively, with secondary traumatic stress only. Years of work experience was correlated positively with post-traumatic growth only. Applications The current study shows the importance of continuing efforts to identify the factors that contribute to post-traumatic growth. At the same time, efforts should be made to foster certain personal and environmental factors to reduce secondary traumatic stress levels.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to determine the mediating role of coping strategies in the relationship between intensity of trauma resulting from the loss of a child and posttraumatic growth (PTG). The study included a group of 76 persons who regarded the loss of a child as a traumatic event. The majority (55.3%) of respondents were women. The age of the participants ranged from 18 to 62 years ( M = 35.88; SD = 9.52). A visual scale to measure intensity of trauma was used, and the Polish versions of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and Coping Inventory (Brief-Cope). The subjects revealed PTG, primarily in terms of appreciating of life and relating to others. Seeking social support, both emotional and instrumental, plays a mediating role between the intensity of trauma and PTG. Encouraging people who have experienced trauma to seek social support may not only enable adaptation to the situation but also contribute to the occurrence of PTG.
The Relationship Between Secondary Traumatic Stress and Compassion Satisfaction: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract:This systematic literature review examines the relationship between secondary traumatic stress (STS) and compassion satisfaction (CS) to identify the state of the science and directions for future research. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis framework was used to guide the identification and evaluation of studies. Eight academic databases were systematically searched between July and December of 2022 to identify articles and dissertations published in English or Hebrew between 2000 and 2022. Studies were considered for inclusion if they examined the relationship between STS and CS and met an established quality threshold. If studies used a mixed methods approach, only quantitative results were included in the review. The search strategy yielded 537 studies with 33 included in the final review. Findings of this review suggest experiences of high levels of STS can coexist with high levels of CS indicating that people can gain satisfaction from their work and experience STS. Most studies examined the relationship between STS and CS using bivariate analyses with variability found in the direction of the relationship. This variability was also found in multivariate studies included in this review. These findings suggest the need for interventions to address both STS and CS with attention paid to the potential negative impact of emotional contagion and the vulnerability of younger female practitioners. Future research should pay attention to the rigor of the analysis of STS and CS and the exploration of mediating or moderating mechanisms between these constructs.
Positive Orientation and Posttraumatic Growth in Mothers of Children with Cystic Fibrosis - Mediating Role of Coping Strategies

Abstract:Purpose: Analyzing the relationship between positive orientation and post-traumatic growth (PTG) in mothers of children with cystic fibrosis including the mediating role of coping strategies. Design and methods: This is a cross-sectional study using questionnaires. The sample was 144 mothers of children with cystic fibrosis (average age 37.25 years, SD = 6.50) recruited in the CF Foundation MATIO in Poland. The main measures included the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), The Positivity Scale, and the Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced (COPE). Mediation was tested with Preacher and Hayes' model 4, including coping strategies as a mediator on the relationship between positive orientation and PTG. Results: Most examined mothers (105-72.91%) revealed high or average levels of posttraumatic growth. Positive orientation was positively (but weakly) correlated with PTGI total and all its dimensions. Additionally, coping strategies, especially focus on problem and seeking emotional support, were mediators between positive orientation and all dimensions of PTG. Full mediation was observed for PTG dimension: changes in relations to others. Conclusion: Positive orientation and coping strategies are important for explaining post-traumatic growth in mothers of children with cystic fibrosis. Practice implications: Therapeutic interventions and support programs for mothers of children with cystic fibrosis may increase mothers' awareness of experiencing PTG. Learning effective and flexible stress coping strategies can foster positive changes.
The Role of Coping and Posttraumatic Stress in Fostering Posttraumatic Growth and Quality of Life Among Women with Breast Cancer

Abstract:Tedeschi & Calhoun's model of posttraumatic growth (PTG) suggests that intrusive thoughts about a traumatic event, in combination with helpful coping strategies, facilitates PTG. This manuscript applies this model to a sample of breast cancer survivors, augments it to conceptualize coping strategies as "active" or "avoidant," and extends it to include health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This is a secondary analysis of a subset of breast cancer patients (N = 123) in a randomized clinical trial of Tibetan yoga, which examines the associations of coping at study entry with PTG, PTSS (i.e., intrusive thoughts and avoidance), and HRQOL (physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component scales) reported 9 and 15 months later. Mediation analyses revealed that higher baseline active coping predicted higher 9-month PTG, which in turn predicted higher 15-month PCS [effect = .46, 95% CI (.06, 1.07)]. Exploratory moderated mediation analyses revealed that higher baseline intrusive thoughts about cancer predicted lower 9-month PTG, which in turn predicted lower 15-month PCS, but only for those reporting low active coping [effect = - .06, 95% CI (- .16, - .003)]. Active coping may play a critical role of fostering PTG and improving subsequent HRQOL in the presence of rumination about cancer.
Social support and negative and positive outcomes of experienced traumatic events in a group of male emergency service workers

Abstract:The paper investigates the relationship between perceived social support in the workplace and both negative (post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms) and positive outcomes (post-traumatic growth) of experienced traumatic events in a group of male emergency service workers. Data of 116 workers representing emergency services (37.1% firefighters, 37.1%, police officers and 30% medical rescue workers) who have experienced a traumatic event in their worksite were analyzed. The range of age of the participants was 21-57 years (M=35.27; SD=8.13). Polish versions of the Impact of Event Scale--Revised and the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory were used to assess the negative and positive outcomes of the experienced event. A perceived social support scale was measured by the scale What support you can count on. The data obtained from the study revealed the negative dependence of social support from supervisors with PTSD symptoms and positive--social support from co-workers with post-traumatic growth. Moreover the results of the study indicate the positive relationship between negative and positive outcomes of experienced traumatic events in the workplace. Perceived social support plays a more important role in gaining benefits from trauma than preventing negative outcomes of the experienced traumatic event. Support from co-workers, compared to support from supervisors, has greater importance.

Abstract:Objective: There is growing interest in understanding people's positive changes after their negative life experiences. Previous studies have shown that coping resources, cognitive appraisal, and coping strategies are associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG). This study aimed to extend previous findings by applying the stress and coping model and the self-determination theory to further understand the psychological factors (including basic psychological needs satisfaction and coping variables) that promote PTG. Method: An ethnically diverse sample of 454 college students participated in an online survey. A hierarchical regression was conducted to examine the associations among the coping variables and PTG. Results: After we controlled for gender, number of types of traumatic events, and the level of current distress due to the most traumatic event, results from a hierarchical regression analysis revealed that satisfaction of relatedness need, challenge appraisal, emotional expression, acceptance, and positive reframing were associated with higher PTG. Conclusions: Our findings support the facilitating role of these factors in promoting PTG. Interventions that help people to reevaluate the impact of the negative events, improve people's skills in using appropriate cognitive and emotional coping strategies, and facilitate supportive environment for psychological needs satisfaction may increase people's PTG.
Secondary traumatic stress and vicarious posttraumatic growth in oncology nurses: the mediating role of empathy

Abstract:Background: The relationship between secondary traumatic stress (STS), empathy, and vicarious post-traumatic growth (VPTG) in oncology nurses is unclear. Understanding these links is crucial for improving nurse well-being and patient care quality. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between STS, empathy, and VPTG among oncology nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a multicentric setting. Data collection involved oncology nurses completing questionnaires assessing STS, empathy, and VPTG levels. Data analysis included correlation analyses, multiple stepwise regression analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the interrelationships between these variables. The study adhered to the STROBE checklist. Results: A total of 391 oncology nurses participated in the study. They showed moderate to low levels of VPTG and high levels of STS. STS exhibited a negative association with VPTG, while empathy demonstrated a positive direct association with both VPTG and STS. Moreover, SEM indicated that empathy mediated the relationship between STS and VPTG, with a partial mediating effect of 0.127. Factors such as receiving psychological training, educational attainment, STS, and empathy collectively explained 24% of the variance in VPTG. Conclusion: Our findings highlighted the negative correlation between STS and VPTG among oncology nurses. Additionally, empathy was found to mediate the relationship between STS and VPTG, suggesting it plays a significant role in influencing VPTG. Implications for practice: To aid oncology nurses, interventions should focus on reducing STS and enhancing empathy. Strategies like resilience workshops, peer support, and stress management can foster VPTG. Creating a supportive work environment is crucial for nurses' well-being and quality patient care.

Abstract:Abstract Background Second victims, defined as healthcare providers enduring emotional and psychological distress after patient safety incidents (PSIs). The potential for positive transformation through these experiences is underexplored but is essential for fostering a culture of error learning and enhancing patient care. Objective To explore the level and determinants of post-traumatic growth (PTG), applying the stress process model. Methods The study was conducted at a tertiary general hospital in Chongqing, China. A descriptive, cross-sectional study design was used. A total of 474 s victims were included. An online survey was conducted in November 2021 to assess various factors related to the second victim experience. These factors included PSIs (considered as stressors), coping styles, perceived threats, and social support (acting as mediators), as well as the outcomes of second victim syndrome (SVS) and PTG. Statistical description, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling were utilized for the data analysis. A p-value ≤ 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Results The participants reported moderate distress (SVS = 2.84 ± 0.85) and PTG (2.72 ± 0.85). The total effects on SVS of perceived threat, negative coping, social support, positive coping, and PSIs were 0.387, 0.359, -0.355, -0.220, and 0.115, respectively, accounting for 47% of the variation in SVS. The total effects of social support, positive coping, and PSIs on PTG were 0.355, 0.203, and − 0.053, respectively, accounting for 19% of the variation in PTG. Conclusions The study provides novel insights into the complex interplay between perceived threats, coping styles, and social support in facilitating PTG among second victims. By bolstering social support and promoting adaptive coping strategies, the adverse effects of PSIs can be mitigated, transforming them into opportunities for resilience and growth, and offering a fresh perspective on managing PSIs in healthcare settings.

Secondary traumatic stress and dissociative coping strategies in nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic: The protective role of resilience

Abstract:During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses are repeatedly exposed to acute stress at their workplace, and therefore, they are at high risk for developing mental health symptoms. The prolonged exposure of healthcare professionals may lead to Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS). STS is an aspect of "cost of care", the natural consequence of providing care to people who suffer physically or psychologically. The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of STS in nurses during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Greece and to detect aggravating and protective factors. Participants were 222 nurses (87.4 % women; mean age 42.3 years) who completed an online survey. The questionnaire comprised of the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale, the Brief Resilience Scale, and the Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory. Nurses had high levels of STS. The hierarchical regression analyses showed that STS and its dimensions Avoidance and Arousal were positively predicted mainly by denial and self-distraction coping strategies and inversely by resilience. Resilience exhibited a protective (partial mediation) effect on the strong relationship between the dissociative coping strategies (denial, self-distraction, venting and behavioral disengagement) and STS. Trauma-informed care psychosocial interventions are needed to support the already overburdened nursing staff during the coronavirus pandemic.
