Abstract:In nanoscale, motion operation of a nano-objective is usually realized by displacement load, which put forwards high requirement for ductility of material. Since pristine graphene has low ductility, once the stretching strain exceeds its critical value, it breaks in brittle style and loses ability to bear the external load quickly. Herein, to improve the ductility, a corrugated sandwich carbon nano-network model based on few-layered graphene is proposed, in which the two surface layers are bonded with several corrugated core layers via benzene molecules. Effects of factors such as the geometry of the carbon network, temperature, and strain rate, on the ductility are evaluated by molecular dynamics simulations. Conclusions are drawn for potential application of the new two-dimensional material with designable ductility.

Abstract:Graphene has been reported with record-breaking properties which have opened up huge potential applications. A considerable research has been devoted to manipulate or modify the properties of graphene to target a more smart nanoscale device. Graphene and carbon nanotube hybrid structure (GNHS) is one of the promising graphene derivative, whose mechanical properties have been rarely discussed in literature. Therefore, the mechanical properties of GNHS is studied in this paper based on the large-scale molecular dynamics simulation. The target GNHS is constructed by considering two separate graphene layers that are being connected by single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) according to the experimental observations. It is found that the GNHSs exhibit much lower yield strength, Young's modulus, and earlier yielding compared to bilayer graphene sheet. Fracture of GNHSs is found to initiate at the connecting region between carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene. After failure, monatomic chains are normally observed at the front of the failure region, and the two graphene layers at the failure region without connecting CNTs will adhere to each other, generating a bilayer graphene sheet scheme (with a layer distance about 3.4 Å). This study will enrich the current understanding of the mechanical performance of GNHS, which will guide the design of GNHS and shed light on its various applications.
Two-dimensional Graphene Heterojunctions: the Tunable Mechanical Properties

Abstract:We report the mechanical properties of different two-dimensional carbon heterojunctions (HJs) made from graphene and various stable graphene allotropes, including α-, β-, γ- and 6612-graphyne (GY), and graphdiyne (GDY). It is found that all HJs exhibit a brittle behaviour except the one with α-GY, which however shows a hardening process due to the formation of triple carbon rings. Such hardening process has greatly deferred the failure of the structure. The yielding of the HJs is usually initiated at the interface between graphene and graphene allotropes, and monoatomic carbon rings are normally formed after yielding. By varying the locations of graphene (either in the middle or at the two ends of the HJs), similar mechanical properties have been obtained, suggesting insignificant impacts from location of graphene allotropes. Whereas, changing the types and percentages of the graphene allotropes, the HJs exhibit vastly different mechanical properties. In general, with the increasing graphene percentage, the yield strain decreases and the effective Young's modulus increases. Meanwhile, the yield stress appears irrelevant with the graphene percentage. This study provides a fundamental understanding of the tensile properties of the heterojunctions that are crucial for the design and engineering of their mechanical properties, in order to facilitate their emerging future applications in nanoscale devices, such as flexible/stretchable electronics.
Engineering the Mechanical Properties of Graphene Nanotube Hybrid Structures Through Structural Modulation

Abstract:The excellent multi-functional properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) and graphene have enabled them as appealing building blocks to construct 3D carbon-based nanomaterials or nanostructures. The recently reported graphene nanotube hybrid structure (GNHS) is one of the representatives of such nanostructures. This work investigated the relationships between the mechanical properties of the GNHS and its structure basing on large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that increasing the length of the constituent CNTs, the GNHS will have a higher Young’s modulus and yield strength. Whereas, no strong correlation is found between the number of graphene layers and Young’s modulus and yield strength, though more graphene layers intends to lead to a higher yield strain. In the meanwhile, the presences of multi-wall CNTs are found to greatly strengthen the hybrid structure. Generally, the hybrid structures exhibit a brittle behavior and the failure initiates from the connecting regions between CNT and graphene. More interestingly, affluent formations of monoatomic chains and rings are found at the fracture region. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the mechanical performance of the GNHSs while varying their structures, which will shed lights on the design and also the applications of the carbon-based nanostructures.

Abstract:Nanoantennas play a fundamental role in the nanotechnology due to their capabilities to confine and enhance the light through converting the localized fields to propagating electromagnetic fields, and vice versa. The characteristics of nanoantennas can be modified by carefully designing the geometric size and shape as well as choosing different materials of nanoantennas. However, the features cannot be dynamically tuned once the nanoantenna is fabricated. In the literatures, the pristine graphene has been used as a transparent electrode due to the properties of high optical transmittance and electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, due to the forbidden interband transitions by the Pauli blocking, the chemically or electrostatically doped graphene can support strong plasmonic effects particularly at the far-infrared or terahertz regime. These capabilities of dynamically modifying chemical potentials enable to fabricate controllable devices by introducing the graphene sheet.

Abstract:Carbon-based hybrid nanostructures are believed to entail certain advantages of their parent low-dimensional materials and would serve as building blocks to bridge the nanoscale geometry to the large-scale application requirements. Fullerene, carbon nanotubes and graphene are suggested as ideal 'building blocks' for this kind of bottom-up strategy. In this work a series of hybrid graphene/fullerene architectures, termed graphene nanobuds, are constructed by attaching or fusing C-60 molecules on a defect graphene sheet and the mechanical properties are investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. The elastic moduli are observed to degrade by a certain amount but are still rather high. The obtained Young's moduli are of several hundred GPas and the tensile strengths are above 50 GPa. Furthermore, the intriguing feature of the nearly linear stress-strain response could attract intense follow-up investigations and could be utilized in various application branches such as position sensing.

Abstract:The mechanical and thermal properties of a hybrid nanotube consisting of a coaxial carbon nanotube (CNT) inside a graphyne nanotube (GNT), i.e., CNT@GNT, are investigated in this paper by using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the mechanical properties of CNT@GNT under uniaxial tension depend on the nanotube chirality of its components. Specifically, the Young's modulus of the CNT@GNT structure with an inner zigzag CNT is larger than that of its counterpart with an armchair CNT, while CNT@GNT with an armchair CNT and a zigzag GNT is found to possess the largest tensile strength and fracture strain. In addition, a unique fracture behavior of the successive rupture of its two components is observed in CNT@GNT. The thermal conductivity of CNT@GNT is found to be almost independent of the nanotube chirality of its components but increases as the length and diameter of the CNT@GNT increase. Moreover, strain engineering is shown as an effective avenue to modulate the thermal conductivity of CNT@GNT, which can be enhanced by tension but reduced by compression. The analysis of the phonon spectrum and spectral energy density demonstrates that this strain effect originates from changes of the phonon group velocity and phonon scattering in the strained CNT@GNT.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate, by molecular dynamics simulations, the mechanical properties of a new carbon nanostructure, termed a graphene nanochain, constructed by sewing up pristine or twisted graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and interlocking the obtained nanorings. The obtained tensile strength of defect-free nanochain is a little lower than that of pristine GNRs and the fracture point is earlier than that of the GNRs. The effects of length, width and twist angle of the constituent GNRs on the mechanical performance are analyzed. Furthermore, defect effect is investigated and in some high defect coverage cases, an interesting mechanical strengthening-like behavior is observed. This structure supports the concept of long-cable manufacturing and advanced material design can be achieved by integration of nanochain with other nanocomposites. The technology used to construct the nanochain is experimentally feasible, inspired by the recent demonstrations of atomically precise fabrications of GNRs with complex structures [Phys. Rev. Lett., 2009, 102, 205501; Nano Lett., 2010, 10, 4328; Nature, 2010, 466, 470].

Abstract:Carbon-based nanomaterials have drawn strong interest for potential applications due to their extraordinary stability and unique mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. For the minimization of microelectronics/micromechanics circuits, bridging the low dimensional microscopic structure and mesoscopic modeling is indispensable. Graphene and carbon nanotubes are suggested as ideal 'building blocks' for the bottom-up strategy, and recently the integration of both materials has stimulated research interests. In this work we investigated the thermal and mechanical performance in the pillared-graphene - constructed by combining graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes to create a three-dimensional nano network. Reverse non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to analyze the thermal transport behavior. The obtained thermal conductivities are found to be possibly isotropic in two specific directions or highly anisotropic for certain structure configurations. In the mechanical performance analysis, tensile deformations are loaded along graphene plane and along tube axis. The elongation responses and stress-strain relations are observed to be nearly linear, and the calculated strength, fracture strain and Young's moduli are lower than the pristine graphene or carbon nanotubes. The alterations in the thermal and mechanical performances are ascribed to the bond conversion on the junctions.
A “fullerene-carbon nanotube” structure with tunable mechanical properties

Abstract:Carbon-based nanostructures have drawn tremendous research interest and become promising building blocks for the new generation of smart sensors and devices. Utilizing a bottom-up strategy, the chemical interconnecting sp(3) covalent bond between carbon building blocks is an efficient way to enhance its Young's modulus and ductility. The formation of sp3 covalent bond, however, inevitably degrades its ultimate tensile strength caused by stress concentration at the junction. By performing a molecular dynamics simulation of tensile deformation for a fullerene-carbon nanotube (FCNT) structure, we propose a tunable strategy in which fullerenes with various angle energy absorption capacities are utilized as building blocks to tune their ductile behavior, while still maintaining a good ultimate tensile strength of the carbon building blocks. A higher ultimate tensile strength is revealed with the reduction of stress concentration at the junction. A brittle-to-ductile transition during the tensile deformation is detected through the structural modification. The development of ductile behavior is attributed to the improvement of energy propagation ability during the fracture initiation, in which the released energy from bonds fracture is mitigated properly, leading to the further development of mechanical properties. Abstract:In this paper the mechanical properties of a series of hydrogen functionalized graphyne are investigated through acting tensile loads on the monolayer networks. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to calculate the fracture strains and corresponding maximum forces for pristine graphyne along both armchair and zigzag directions. Furthermore, hydrogen functionalized graphynes with different functionalization sites are analyzed to investigate the effect of functionlization on the mechanical performance. Finally, Young's modulus of all the investigated architectures are computed. The obtained results show that monolayer graphyne is mechanically stable with high strength and stiffness, and the mechanical performance can be tuned through structure engineering and functionalization.

Abstract:Cohesive but noncovalent interfaces between carbon nanotubes lead to remarkably microstructural evolution of networked materials under mechanical loads. We explore self-organization of these nanofibers, their mechanical properties, and also energy dissipation capacity in response to cycling strain loading. By performing coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, the underlying mechanisms are discussed. Their dependence on the strain amplitude and properties of carbon nanotubes are revealed, which opens new possibilities in mechanical tuning of microstructures in carbon nanotubes networks for mechanical, electrochemical, and filtration applications, where the performance is critically defined by microstructures.
Networked Nanoconstrictions: an Effective Route to Tuning the Thermal Transport Properties of Graphene

Abstract:With the molecular dynamics simulations, we found that the nanoconstriction resistance arising from the single constriction is inversely proportional to the constriction width, which can be well described by the two-dimensional ballistic resistance model we proposed. More importantly, after the nanoconstrictions are networked, the results elucidate a parallel relationship between ballistic resistances in parallel system, weather the constrictions are of equal width or not, and especially, a complicated superimposed effect of arrangement mode on ballistic resistances in series system, which could cause a decrease or further increase in the ballistic resistance. Thus, with the networked nanoconstrictions method, the thermal transport property of graphene could be tuned over a wider range. And we believe this route will effectively expand potential applications of two-dimensional graphene and also pave the way for three-dimensional materials in the future.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube networks feature outstanding mechanical performance, and also hierarchical structures and network topologies. In this paper we investigate their structure–property relationship through mesoscale molecular dynamics simulations. We find that their microstructures undergo remarkable evolution under mechanical loads. The correlation between applied strain, microstructural evolution and failure mechanism, especially the bundling process and evolution of bridging carbon nanotubes, is discussed based on the simulation results. Based on the insights of the underlying mechanisms, further engineering approaches on the carbon nanotube networks towards enhanced mechanical properties are proposed and validated, e.g., by including intertube cross-links that resist shear, maintain the network topology and improve strain affinity.
Tuning the Interlayer Coupling of the Twisted Bilayer Graphene by Molecular Adsorption

Abstract:We describe a facile method to modulate the local interlayer coupling by adsorption of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) onto twisted bilayer graphene and report the characterization of its electronic band structure using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Low-energy Van Hove singularities (VHSs) and superlattice Dirac cones, induced by the interlayer coupling and graphene-on-graphene moire, respectively, are observed in the tunneling spectra. Our experiments demonstrate that the energy difference of the two VHSs, which reflects the magnitude of interlayer coupling, can be tuned by the local coverage density of molecular adsorption.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulation is used to study and compare the mechanical properties obtained from compression and tension numerical tests of multilayered graphene with an increased interlayer distance. The multilayer graphene with an interlayer distance two-times larger than in graphite is studied first under biaxial compression and then under uniaxial tension along three different axes. The mechanical properties, e.g., the tensile strength and ductility as well as the deformation characteristics due to graphene layer stacking, are studied. The results show that the mechanical properties along different directions are significantly distinguished. Two competitive mechanisms are found both for the compression and tension of multilayer graphene—the crumpling of graphene layers increases the stresses, while the sliding of graphene layers through the surface-to-surface connection lowers it. Multilayer graphene after biaxial compression can sustain high tensile stresses combined with high plasticity. The main outcome of the study of such complex architecture is an important step towards the design of advanced carbon nanomaterials with improved mechanical properties.

Abstract:There is a surging interest in 3D graphitic nanostructures which possess outstanding properties enabling them to be prime candidates for a new generation of nanodevices and energy-absorbing materials. Here we study the stretching instability and reversibility of tightly wound helical carbon nanotubes (HCNTs) by atomistic simulations. The intercoil van der Waals (vdW) interaction-induced flattening of HCNT walls prior to loading is constrained by the defects coordinated for the curvature formation of helices. The HCNTs exhibit extensive stretchability in the range from 400% to 1000% as a result of two distinct deformation mechanisms depending on the HCNT size. For small HCNTs tremendous deformation is achieved by domino-type partial fracture events, whereas for large HCNTs this is accomplished by stepwise buckling of coils. The formation and fracture of edge-closed graphene ribbons occur at lower temperatures, while at elevated temperatures the highly distributed fracture realizes a phenomenal stretchability. The results of cyclic stretching-reversing simulations of large HCNTs display pronounced hysteresis loops, which produce large energy dissipation via full recovery of buckling and vdW bondings. This study provides physical insights into the origins of high ductility and superior reversibility of hybrid CNT structures.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling nanofriction are important in practical applications of nanotechnology. Our first-principles calculations reveal that interlayer nanofriction between two graphene layers can be tuned by applying an external electric field; the tuned magnitude of the coefficient of friction ranges from −30 to 30 %, which is attributed to the increased disparity of electronic structures between AA and AB stackings. This effect is significantly observed in boron- or nitrogen-doped systems compared with a pristine graphene system. Our findings present a feasible and precise strategy to tune the frictional properties of graphene systems.

Abstract:The graphene network architecture is a promising structure for improving both strength and ductility of graphene/metal composites that has attracted widespread attention. A key issue in designing and optimizing networked graphene/metal composites is the development of theoretical model that can quantitatively predict their overall mechanical properties. Herein, we present a novel computational framework to investigate the effect of graphene percolation network on the strength-ductility of graphene/metal composites utilizing the Cauchy's probabilistic model, the field fluctuation method and the irreversible thermodynamics principle. Simultaneously, the accuracy of multiscale model is demonstrated by the reported experimental data. To detect how the strength and ductility of networked graphene/metal composites are elevated synchronously, the influences of the primary microstructural parameters including percolation threshold, graphene concentration and aspect ratio on the strength-ductility are quantitatively assessed. Overall, the computational framework can provide theoretical guidance for the architecture optimization of networked graphene/metal composites.

Abstract:The determination of structural evolution at the atomic level is essential to understanding the intrinsic physics and chemistries of nanomaterials. Mechanochemistry represents a promising method to trace structural evolution, but conventional mechanical tension generates random breaking points, which makes it unavailable for effective analysis. It remains difficult to find an appropriate model to study shear deformations. Here, we synthesize high-modulus carbon nanotubes that can be cut precisely, and the structural evolution is efficiently investigated through a combination of geometry phase analysis and first-principles calculations. The lattice fluctuation depends on the anisotropy, chirality, curvature, and slicing rate. The strain distribution further reveals a plastic breaking mechanism for the conjugated carbon atoms under cutting. The resulting sliced carbon nanotubes with controllable sizes and open ends are promising for various applications, for example, as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries.
