Abstract:Given the contradictory empirical evidence on the relationship between green R&D expenditure and corporate Green Innovation performance (GIP), The present research study is a distinctive investigation into the moderating impacts of ESG reporting on this relationship. We utilized a data collection of 3,846, firm-year observations of A-share listed firms in China from 2016 to 2022 from CSMAR and Bloomberg databases. The firm’s Corporate GIP is assessed and measured by looking at the total quantity of green patents. Lastly, models with multiple regression analyses and fixed effects were employed. The findings show that ESG reporting has a positive and significant impact on the association between corporate GIP and green R&D expenditure, implying its compensating and supportive function in the form of green signals in green outputs. This research could help executives and lawmakers, especially in developing countries to build innovative environmental strategies for business sustainability.

Abstract:Socially and environmentally responsible investing is becoming the benchmark in financial markets. Promoting emerging industries' environmental performance, social responsibility, and corporate governance (ESG) ratings are increasingly becoming the consensus of multinational green financial institutions, investors, and governments. This study employs 3100 panel data from 2014 to 2019 to conduct empirical research on green innovation, ESG indicators, and the financial performance of China's Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) listed companies. Based on the "causal steps approach", we adopt the Sobel–goodman and Bootstrap test to explore the partial mediation effect of ESG indicators. Moreover, when testing the interactive effect of endogeneity, instrumental variables combined with two-stage least squares (2SLS) and a general method of moments (GMM) system are applied in the dynamic panel for robustness. Combing with the approach of ESG factors-integrated and ESG factors-embedded regression models, we find that: (1) Green innovation can significantly improve the ESG scores of GEM listed companies. (2) Both green innovation and ESG performance can improve the financial performances of GEM listed companies, and ESG performance plays an indirect mediating role in the promotion of green innovation on financial performance. (3) Both political connection strength and regional innovation capabilities can negatively moderate the promotion of green innovation on financial performance, and moderating the effect of corporate political connections is more significant than the regional innovation. This study expands the research on the effectiveness of ESG indices and green innovation from the view of micro-GEM companies, providing policy enlightenment for the sustainable development of emerging industries. Our findings provide noteworthy implications for regulators, academicians and practitioners interested in exploring green innovation, ESG rating and financial performance. In addition, providing regulators and the board of directors with insights into the company's and country's future growth prospects.

Abstract:In current years (environment, social, and governance), ESG activities in various countries have been focus more attention their stakeholders by enterprises. The world largest developing country China. The Chinese registered Enterprises ESG performance helps to apprehend the deficiencies of their sustainable ability and development for boost the organizations value. Furthermore, enterprises must balance the allocation of resources between green innovation investment and ESG activities in the future as a result of the interaction effect between these two factors. This research examines the effects of environmental, social, and governance issues on financial and non-financial performance at registered Chinese manufacturing firms since 2009 to 2019. Green innovation is also tested as a moderating factor. Results show that environment, common, and governance performance has negative influence on the firm financial performance. On the other hand, its negative effects on financial performance will be enhanced. The environmental activities have negatively affected financial performance but green innovation has positively regulated them. Non-financial performance is positively impacted by the ESG performance. The ESG general performance and the environmental performance have positive influence on corporate reputation with the improvement of green innovation levels increase. Corporate financial performance is influenced by green innovation and social activities in a substitutional manner.

Abstract:Sustainability practices are increasingly significant in the current business environment, much more so in China with its rapid economic growth. What drives environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, especially regarding the impacts of new quality productivity and green innovation, is thus of importance. The study further assesses the impact of new quality productivity and green innovation on ESG performance with listed companies in China. The research is empirical and regresses the data of the Chinese listed companies from 2011 to 2022. The important findings indicate that new quality productivity significantly improves ESG performance. Efficient innovation practice plays a key role in the promotion of corporate sustainability. Green innovation contributes directly to ESG improvement and enhances the effects of new quality productivity on ESG. This moderating effect has proven to be the more important reason why innovation should be well-infused into core business strategies for sustainable optimization. In addition, this study examines the differential impact of new quality productivity across regions, firm types, and development stages, showing that its effectiveness in driving ESG performance is constrained by the geographic location, firm development stage, and industry characteristics. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating new quality productivity enhancement and green innovation into corporate strategies, providing valuable insights for managers, policymakers, and investors.

Abstract:The Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Composite Rating denotes corporations' capability for supporting sustainable development activities, social responsibility, and transparent and ethical governance. It aims to inform investors and stakeholders about the company's sustainability and social responsibility risks. ESG has increasingly become an informal yet significant driving force in promoting sustainable green innovation within the diversified co-governance environmental management system. This paper examines the dynamic relationship between ESG performance and sustainable green innovation practices in Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2022. The results show a positive correlation between ESG performance and the level of corporate sustainable green innovation. They also validate the moderating roles of informal external pressure and internal development demands. While the moderating effect of public environmental concern (PEC) is not significant, corporate digital transformation (CDT) significantly and positively moderates the relationship between ESG performance and sustainable green innovation. These findings offer policymakers and corporations a means to formulate a framework to shape the conduct of corporations to meet the market's green development needs and to establish instruments that promote green innovation.

Abstract:China's environmental governance exhibits a significant imbalance with its economic development. To enhance the "green" and sustainable practices of enterprises, employing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles is imperative. The literature examining the correlation between ESG and green innovation (GI) lacks detailed clarity and obscures the different effects of each dimension. Inefficient resource allocation may also result from ignoring the distinct implementation costs associated with each dimension of ESG. Such problems eventually hinder the guidance of corporate practices. Therefore, the promoting or inhibiting effects stemming from each of these dimensions warrant further study. In this paper, we use data from A‐share listed companies in China for the years 2004 to 2020 to investigate the mechanism that links the E, S, and G dimensions of ESG with GI from an externality perspective. We prove a linear or U‐shaped relationship between the E or S dimension and GI, and we explore the mediating effect of financing constraints on these relationships. We compare these dimensions under a unified theoretical framework to clarify their differences in externality and internality. This study's results highlight the importance for enterprises to emphasise environmental issues and social recognition, instead of just corporate operations, to achieve sustainable development.

Abstract:As stakeholder concerns about corporate sustainability intensify, greenwashing—where companies deceptively report their environmental performance for short‐term economic gain—poses a significant threat to long‐term sustainability, making it crucial to explore effective ways to curb this practice. Using data from 1,270 Chinese listed companies from 2009 to 2019, this study constructs two‐way fixed effects and moderating effects models to explore the crucial role of green innovation in curbing greenwashing. Green innovation not only reduces the incentives for greenwashing, but also makes a genuine contribution to environmental protection, thus promoting a "win‐win" scenario for both sustainability and corporate development. Moreover, the positive impact of green innovation on curbing greenwashing can be significantly amplified by easing financial constraints and enhancing firms' risk‐taking capabilities to foster a stable financial environment, as well as by strengthening the governance structure through increased gender diversity and environmental background among managers. Heterogeneity tests show that this pathway is particularly effective in companies with heavy pollution and higher economic performance. The research findings help to formulate more effective management strategies and incentive mechanisms to reduce greenwashing and achieve sustainable development.

Abstract:Green finance represents an innovative policy framework aimed at fostering corporate engagement in ESG practices. Drawing on data from Chinese A-share listed companies between 2007 and 2021, this study leverages the 2016 "Guiding Opinions on Building a Green Financial System" as a quasi-experimental setting. By employing a continuous double-difference model, we rigorously investigate the influence of green finance policies (GFP) on corporate ESG performance and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The findings demonstrate a substantial improvement in corporate ESG outcomes attributable to GFP; however, this effect exhibits variability, influenced by the extent of corporate supply chain finance and the transparency of supply chain operations. Detailed mechanism analysis reveals that GFP impacts ESG performance through the reinforcement of external financing constraints, enhancement of internal supply chain efficiency, and reduction of managerial power. Heterogeneity analysis highlights differential impacts on firms based on regional characteristics, particularly in areas with high urban innovation, stringent environmental regulations, and advanced supply chain digitization. Therefore, refining the GFP framework is imperative, emphasizing the understanding of corporate behavior in shaping policy effectiveness, ultimately steering companies toward sustainable development. This study contributes to the theoretical discourse on GFP and their implications for corporate ESG performance, while providing actionable insights for policy optimization.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impacts of research and development (R&D) investment and environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance on green innovation performance. This paper also investigates the moderating effect of ESG performance between R&D investment and green innovation performance. Design/methodology/approach The study uses the data of 223 Chinese listed companies over the period 2015–2018. The ESG indices issued by SynTao Green Finance are used to measure ESG performance. Green innovation performance is measured by the total number of green patents, the number of green invention patents and the number of green non-invention patents. Finally, multiple regression analysis is applied to test the research hypotheses. Findings The results show that R&D investment has a positive impact on green innovation performance and ESG performance can increase the number of green invention patents. In addition, ESG performance moderates the relationship between R&D investment and green innovation performance. Practical implications The findings may help managers and policymakers in developing countries to make ecological innovation strategies to achieve corporate sustainability. Originality/value This is the first study to examine the impacts of R&D investment and ESG performance on green innovation performance in the context of China, an emerging market.

Abstract:In the context of rising global eco-concern, China introduced the green finance reform and innovation (GFRIs) policies to promote sustainable growth, rendering corporate ESG performance increasingly salient. This study evaluates the impact of GFRIs policies on ESG performance of Chinese listed firms from 2015 to 2022, and delves into the mechanisms of green investments, green innovation, and government environmental concern. By employing a dynamic difference-in-differences model and considering firms in GFRIs pilot zones as the treatment group, we find that: First, green finance reform can significantly enhance corporate ESG performance, and this result remains robust across various tests. Second, the impact is more pronounced among growth-stage firms, private firms, and small-scale firms, as revealed by our heterogeneity analysis. Third, the mechanism tests show that green finance reform improves corporate ESG performance by boosting green investments, fostering green innovation, and heightening local government environmental concerns. Fourth, firm executives' attributes influence the impact of green finance reform on ESG performance, and the involvement of CPC member executives, female executives, and socially-responsible executives can positively moderate this effect. This study provides valuable insights into sound green finance strategies for developing countries by highlighting the positive impacts of green finance reforms on microeconomic outcomes.

Abstract:The ESG score system is a fundamental component of the green financial system that is essential in promoting corporate environmental progress. In this work, we investigate the micro-environmental impact of ESG scores using panel fixed effects models. We examine the processes underlying the influence of ESG scores on the performance of corporate green innovation, as well as any potential inequalities in this impact under different moderating factors. To conduct our analysis, we use data from Chinese listed A-shares on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from 2010 to 2019. Our study demonstrates a relationship between corporate green innovation and ESG ratings, indicating that higher ESG ratings assist businesses in achieving better green innovation results. This beneficial effect is evident both numerically and qualitatively, and it continues to hold up even after being put through a number of demanding tests. Additionally, we pinpoint two main ways that ESG encourages corporate green innovation: by boosting government-enterprise ties and strengthening corporate investment efficiency. Additionally, we note that while business characteristics aligned with sustainability further enhance the favorable influence of ESG on green innovation performance, characteristics linked to ecologically detrimental activities impede the contribution of ESG to green innovation. Our study adds to the body of knowledge already available on corporate environmental performance and green finance by offering empirical insights that can help enhance corporate environmental development and improve the ESG rating system.

Abstract:Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) has become a buzzword in investment circles as ecological damage and climate warming occur. ESG assessment is one of the important institutions of the green financial system, which plays a significant part in boosting corporate green development. We use the number of green patent applications and green patent citations to measure corporate green innovation and analyze the micro-green effects of the ESG score system using the panel fixed effects models, which means that we explore the impact of the ESG scores on corporate green innovation performance, the specific mechanism of this effect, and the asymmetry of this impact under different moderation effects by using Chinese listed A-shares in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2010–2019 as our research sample. We find that ESG positively affects corporate green innovation; the higher the ESG evaluation, the more it improves firms’ green innovation performance. The promotion effect is reflected quantitatively and qualitatively and remains valid after several robustness tests. In addition, the contribution of ESG to corporate green innovation is achieved through two main paths improving corporate investment efficiency and government-enterprise relations. Corporate black attributes inhibit the contribution of ESG to green innovation, while green attributes strengthen the contribution of ESG to green innovation performance. Our study demonstrates the importance of corporate participation in environmental, social, and governance practices for corporate green innovation, which is beneficial for achieving win-win environmental, social, and economic results. Furthermore, our research completes the research on the effects of corporate green performance and green finance. It can provide empirical references for promoting corporate green development and improving the ESG evaluation system.

Abstract:This study examines the influence of corporate ESG performance on green innovation based on the data of 2024 A-share listed firms in China from 2009 to 2020. We find that ESG performance has a significantly positive impact on green innovation. Mechanism analysis reveals that excellent ESG performance contributes to relieving financing constraints, enhancing the level of corporate human capital, and improving management myopia, thus positively influencing corporate green innovation. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the positive effect of ESG performance on green innovation is more pronounced in firms with strong innovation capacity, non-state enterprises, firms in non-polluting industries, firms located in areas with high marketization, and firms in poor macroeconomic environments. Further analyses prove that good ESG performance also helps to enhance the quality of green innovation, the efficiency of green innovation, and the proportion of collaborative green innovation. These results offer important implications for improving firm ESG performance and promoting corporate green innovation.

Abstract:Purpose The transition to green growth goals requires the concerted efforts of the whole society. Enterprises, as important players in the market, play a key role in promoting green and sustainable development. The rise of the concept of sustainable development has enabled more enterprises to disclose environmental, social and governance (ESG) information, and ESG behaviour is regarded as a positive strategic behaviour to implement the new development concept. This paper aims to explore the influence of ESG performance on enterprise green innovation. Design/methodology/approach This study applies a fixed effect model and the regulation effect of empirical analysis to explore the influence of ESG performance on enterprise green innovation. The object of investigation is 2014–2021 Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies. Findings The results of an empirical analysis outline the following conclusions: (1) ESG performance has a significant effect on enterprise green innovation, mainly by easing the pressure of the financing enterprise, fitting stakeholders' environmental protection concept and obtaining employee organizational identity that influences enterprise green innovation. (2) Government regulation positively regulates the role of ESG performance in promoting the green innovation of enterprises. (3) Heterogeneity analysis found that the strengthening role of ESG performance on the green innovation of enterprises is stronger in green invention patents, state-owned enterprises and nonheavily polluting industries. Research limitations/implications Despite the valuable findings, this study has a few limitations. Thus, it is necessary to extend the object of investigation by adding other Asian countries, which allows for comparison analysis and allocating best practices for promoting green innovation. Besides, innovation and ESG performance depend on the quality of institutions. In this case, the future study should incorporate the indicators that reveal the quality of institutions (corruption, transparency, digitalisation, voice, accountability, etc.). Practical implications According to the above conclusions, this paper proposes suggestions at the level of enterprises, government and investors. At the enterprise level, ESG responsibility should be strengthened, ESG information should be consciously disclosed and the quality of ESG disclosure should be improved. Government departments should play the role of supervisors, improve the construction of ESG information disclosure systems and promote the formation of ESG systems. At the social level, investors should improve the ESG information status and pay more attention to the ESG performance of enterprises. Originality/value This study fills the scientific gaps in the analysis impact of ESG performance on the green innovation of enterprises. This paper contributes to the theoretical landscape of ESG efficiency by developing approaches based on two empirical models: testing the impact of enterprise ESG performance on green innovation and testing whether government regulation plays a regulatory role in the relationship between ESG performance and green innovation. Besides, this study analysed the ESG performance and green innovation within the following categories: heavy and nonheavy polluter industries; state and nonstate-owned enterprise groups.

Abstract:The effectiveness of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) ratings has been widely discussed and is often linked to corporate financial performance by academics and practitioners. However, a significant research gap remains unexplored, specifically, measuring the underlying mechanisms between ESG ratings and corporate green innovation in developing countries. This study unpacks the quasi-natural experiment based on the 2015 ESG rating of the SynTao Green Finance Agency to investigate how ESG ratings affect corporate green innovation based on data relating to Chinese A-share listed companies between 2010 and 2018. The results show that ESG ratings significantly promote the quantity and quality of corporate green innovation and are mediated by alleviating financial constraints and increasing managers' environmental awareness. In this context, the higher the ESG rating score, the more apparent is the promotion effect. Furthermore, stricter environmental regulations, increased market competition, and companies in their growth period strengthen the association between ESG ratings and green innovation. This study provides scientific evidence for the role of ESG ratings in promoting proactive green innovation and deepening green development in China.

Abstract:With changing times as countries pursue sustainable development, traditional profit-driven strategic decisions are no longer sustainable. A well-planned financial investment may improve a business's capital flow efficiency, but when short-term wealth overrides long-term value, the financialization of companies will inevitably impede their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. This study examined how company financialization was related to its ESG performance by China Listed Companies between 2010 and 2019. According to empirical tests using data from the China Stock Market & Accounting Research database and the Wind Financial Terminal, corporate financialization negatively affects ESG performance. After a series of robustness tests, such as endogenous analysis, the conclusion still holds. Furthermore, financialization dampens ESG performance more in the private sector and in companies with high technology dependence. Mechanistic analysis shows that corporate financialization not only creates long-term value risks through crowding out real capital and appropriation of green resources but also undermines company ESG performance through a lack of balanced development to achieve objectives and capabilities. Lastly, using the green patent data provided by the Chinese Research Data Services Platform database, it is found that improved green technology innovation can mitigate the damage of corporate financialization on ESG performance, and this mitigation is more pronounced in regions with better green development. This study adds to the empirical evidence on the theoretical and controversial role of corporate financialization. It helps to warn of its short-sighted effects on sustainable development and provides implications through the positive effects of green technology innovations.
