Abstract:Objective. To examine the relationship between the Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes Assessment (PCOA) and the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) using a large, multi-institutional sample of student scores. Methods. A matched dataset was obtained from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) consisting of examination scores for the 1,460 students who completed both the PCOA and the NAPLEX between 2012 and 2015 at six schools/colleges of pharmacy (S/COPs). Bivariate correlations were estimated for total and content area scores on both examinations. Students' total NAPLEX scores were predicted using linear regression models containing total and content area scores on PCOA and dummy variables for S/COP and year. Results. Students' PCOA total score and NAPLEX total score were significantly and moderately correlated (r=0.54). All correlations between PCOA and NAPLEX total and content area scores were significant. and ranged from r=0.22 to 0.56. Regression results showed pharmaceutical and clinical sciences PCOA content scores were significant predictors of NAPLEX total score while basic biomedical sciences and social/behavioral/administrative sciences were not. The PCOA total and content scores accounted for 30%-33% of the variance in total NAPLEX score. Conclusion. Student PCOA and NAPLEX total and content area scores were significantly correlated, which is consistent with the findings of previous research. The somewhat modest proportion of variance in NAPLEX scores accounted for by PCOA scores illustrates the need for use of additional performance measures when evaluating student preparedness for the NAPLEX. This study provides important baseline data that can be used by S/COPs for comparison with their own student data as well as by researchers seeking to conduct additional analyses following recent changes in the PCOA and NAPLEX blueprints.

Translating Clinical Decision-Making Skills From a Critical Care Pharmacy Elective to the Required Curriculum

Abstract:Objective: To examine the impact of a critical care pharmacy elective (CCPE) on student performance in other courses in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum that emphasize clinical reasoning and decision making. Methods: This is a retrospective, cohort study including all students from the 2019-2021 graduating classes enrolled in required courses, Pharmacotherapy and Integrated Patient Cases (IPCs). Students were divided for comparison based on completion of the CCPE. The primary outcome was outstanding performance, defined by a final course grade ≥90%, in Pharmacotherapy and IPC. Baseline characteristics and outcomes were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the χ2 test or two-sided t test for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. Binary logistic regression models were constructed to identify variables associated with the primary outcome. Results: Of 377 students included, 129 (34%) completed the CCPE. Baseline characteristics were similar between both groups, except more females completed the CCPE. Students that completed the CCPE were not more likely to demonstrate outstanding performance in Pharmacotherapy III (20% vs 30%) or Pharmacotherapy IV (27% vs 24%), but were more likely in IPC (34% vs 23%). In the adjusted analysis, CCPE students were almost twice as likely to exhibit outstanding performance in IPC. Conclusion: Students that completed the CCPE were more likely to demonstrate outstanding performance in IPC, but not in either of the Pharmacotherapy courses. Students may benefit from practicing clinical reasoning earlier in the curriculum to build-up to effective and efficient clinical decision-making. Implications of course structure on student performance should be further explored.
Impact of Collaborative Testing on Academic Performance in Pharmacy Education

Abstract:Objective: To determine the impact of 2-stage collaborative testing (CT) on academic performance of pharmacy students and to characterize pharmacy student perceptions of CT. Methods: Two-stage CT was piloted in a 2-course patient assessment sequence within a Doctor of Pharmacy program. Students were randomly allocated into 2 groups and further divided into teams of 4 to 5 students. Student teams alternated taking section examinations in a traditional 1-stage (individual) and 2-stage CT (individual then team) format to establish an experimental design. Near the end of each semester, students individually took a post-test to facilitate assessment of CT on academic performance. A 12-item, anonymous survey instrument assessed student perceptions of 2-stage CT. The group differences in academic performance and survey responses were analyzed statistically. Results: There were 128 students enrolled in the course sequence, 123 of whom met the inclusion criteria for assessment of academic performance and 100 of whom completed the survey (response rate = 83%). Generally, students performed better on post-test items initially assessed through 2-stage CT (retention marker) and on post-test items that were answered incorrectly under 2-stage CT conditions (learning marker). Approximately 9 in 10 survey respondents preferred 2-stage CT over traditional 1-stage individual testing, with an equivalent proportion reporting it helped them learn from their mistakes and retain what they learned. There was high-level agreement among respondents that 2-stage CT improved their ability to work as a team and think critically. Conclusion: The implementation of 2-stage CT in a patient assessment course sequence was associated with improved learning and retention and was well-received by students.

Abstract:Adult mice, aged 3 months, were used. The left hypoglossal nerve of each mouse was crushed. Between 1 and 14 days after injury tritiated 6[3H]thymidine of specific activity 5OOOmcjm~ (obtained from the Radiochemical Centre, Amersham) was injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle ( 5 pc in 20 pl) or intraperitoneally (100 pc in 0-4 ml). The animal was killed 16 hr later and perfused with Carnoy's fixative. After dehydration and wax impregnation, serial sections 1 ,u thick were cut. These were rehydrated, treated with 1 % perchloric acid at 4" for 20 min to remove unincorporated nucleoside (PERRY, HELL and ERRARA, 1961), and washed for 2 hr. Autoradiographs were prepared by dipping the wet slides in Ilford G5 liquid emulsion at 44", followed by drying and exposure for between 1 and 4 weeks; they were developed in Kodak 19b developer, fixed, and washed and stained with methyl-green pyronine. Before being treated with perchloric acid alternate slides were incubated in ribonuclease-5 mg in 100 ml Mcllvaine's buffer, pH 7.0, in deoxyribonuclease, 5 mg in 100 ml 0.02 M-phosphate buffer, pH 7.0 with 0.003 M-MgCI,, or in buffer alone without the enzyme. Retrospective study assessing student utilization of optional practice questions on pharmacy calculations final examination performance

Abstract:Objective: Pharmacists are often the last line of defense from medical errors caused by inaccurate calculations. Effective teaching and assessment of pharmaceutical calculations is essential in preparing students for successful pharmacy careers. This study aimed to elucidate the potential benefit of self-testing practice questions on final examination performance in a first-year pharmaceutical calculations course. Methods: One-hundred and sixteen students across the class of 2026 and 2027 were given access to 110 online practice calculation questions eight days prior to the final examination. Retrospective analysis using Pearson's Correlation Coefficient and an Unpaired t-test was used to assess the effect of self-study practice questions on exam performance. Results: A correlation between higher quiz scores and enhanced final examination scores was observed for both the class of 2026 and 2027. A greater number of attempts on practice quiz questions correlated with a higher score on the final examination for the class of 2026, but not the class of 2027. Also, an earlier first access date was associated with higher final examination scores specifically for the class of 2026. Conclusion: This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the use of practice calculation questions on final examination performance, and results reveal that the utilization of practice calculation questions positively correlates with improved final examination performance, notably observed in the class of 2026 but not in 2027. These findings suggest the potential efficacy of this preparatory method across various pharmaceutical courses and other calculation-based disciplines internationally.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the relationship between student engagement with the key elements of a flipped classroom approach (preparation and attendance), their attitudes to learning, including strategy development, and their performance on two types of examination questions (knowledge recall and providing rational predictions when faced with novel scenarios). Methods. This study correlated student engagement with the flipped classroom and student disposition to learning with student ability to solve novel scenarios in examinations. Results. Students who both prepared for and attended classes performed significantly better on examination questions that required analysis of novel scenarios compared to students who did not prepare and missed classes. However, there was no difference for both groups of students on examination questions that required knowledge and comprehension. Student motivation and use of strategies correlated with higher examination scores on questions requiring novel scenario analysis. Conclusion. There is a synergistic relationship between class preparation and attendance. The combination of preparation and attendance was positively correlated to assessment type; the relationship was apparent for questions requiring students to solve novel problems but not for questions requiring knowledge or comprehension.

Abstract:Objective. To examine the extent of financial and faculty resources dedicated to preparing students for NAPLEX and PCOA examinations, and how these investments compare with NAPLEX pass rates. Methods. A 23-item survey was administered to assessment professionals in U.S. colleges and schools of pharmacy (C/SOPs). Institutions were compared by type, age, and student cohort size. Institutional differences were explored according to the costs and types of NAPLEX and PCOA preparation provided, if any, and mean NAPLEX pass rates. Results. Of 134 C/SOPs that received the survey invitation, 91 responded. Nearly 80% of these respondents reported providing some form of NAPLEX preparation. Significantly higher 2015 mean NAPLEX pass rates were found in public institutions, schools that do not provide NAPLEX prep, and schools spending less than $10,000 annually on NAPLEX prep. Only 18 schools reported providing PCOA preparation. Conclusion. Investment in NAPLEX and PCOA preparation resources vary widely across C/SOPs but may increase in the next few years, due to dropping NAPLEX pass rates and depending upon how PCOA data are used.

Abstract:Objective. To compare Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes Assessment (PCOA) scaled scores and North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) pass rates in students who completed a two-week intersession remediation or repeated a course with the scaled scores and pass rates of students who did not require any form of didactic remediation and did not have to repeat a course. Methods. Data examined for this study included NAPLEX/PCOA scores, NAPLEX pass/fail status, and remediation history for students at one college of pharmacy. Students from the graduating classes of 2016, 2017, and 2018 were organized into four groups: non-remediation, one course remediation and no repeats, more than one course remediation and no repeats, and one or more course repeats. Differences were analyzed using linear regression, logistic regression, and Pearson correlations. Results. The PCOA scores for students in the remediation groups were significantly lower than scores for students in the non-remediation groups, with a reduction of 37.8 to 50.9 points from the expected non-remediators' score. The NAPLEX scores for students who remediated more than one course or repeated one or more courses were 16-20 points lower compared to students who did not remediate. The likelihood of a student failing the NAPLEX was also not significantly lower for students who remediated one course but was significantly lower for other remediation groups. Conclusion. Although single course remediation in this curricular model appears to have minimal impact on NAPLEX outcomes and may be an acceptable intervention for many students, additional support and interventions may be warranted for students who qualify for remediation in multiple courses and/or for repeating a course.

Abstract:Objective. To determine factors predictive of student failure or poor performance on advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) at a single pharmacy program. Methods. This retrospective cohort evaluated students entering the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program from 2012-2014 at St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Students who received a grade of F for one or more APPEs (failure group) were compared to all other students (non-failure group). A secondary evaluation compared students with a C or F on one or more APPEs (poor performers) to all other students (non-poor performers). Data were collected on didactic and experiential performance, identifiable professionalism issues from introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPEs), and academic honor code violations. Univariable and multivariable logistic regressions were performed to determine factors associated with APPE failure and poor performance. Results. A total of 669 students were analyzed. Twenty-eight students (4.2%) failed one or more APPEs and 81 students (12.1%) were identified as poor performers (grade of C or F). For the primary outcome, professional grade point average (GPA) of less than 2.7, practicum failure, IPPE professionalism issue(s), and pharmacotherapy course failure were identified for inclusion in the multivariable analysis. The IPPE professionalism issue(s) (HR 4.8 [95% CI 1.9-12.4]) and pharmacotherapy course failure (HR 4.2 [95% CI, 1.6-11.1]) were associated with APPE failure on multivariable regression. On the secondary analysis, the same variables were identified for multivariable regression, with professional GPA of less than 2.7 (HR 2.7 [95% CI 1.5-5]), IPPE professionalism issue(s) (HR 3.9 [95% CI 2.2-6.9]), and pharmacotherapy course failure (HR 2.0 [95% CI 1.1-3.7]) associated with poor performance. Conclusion. Poor academic performance and/or identified unprofessional behavior while completing IPPEs are associated with APPE failure and poor performance. Interventions should be aimed at identifying at-risk students and addressing risk factors prior to APPEs.

Abstract:Extention of the survival period and suppression of the recurrence of neurological symptoms during postoperative progression free intervals have become the most important problems in the treatment of gliomas. In the outpatient clinic, neurological and neuroradiological monitoring, including sequential CT scans, are especially valuable. In addition to each conventional monitoring methods, immunological and biochemical monitoring methods have been introduced as precise and noninvasive methods. In this paper, wer have discussed about the biochemical monitoring. In biochemical monitoring cystic fluid was repeatedly obtained through Ommaya's reservoir and chemically analysed during the postoperative period of eight cases of glioblastoma showed complete remission either clinically or chemically during the monitoring period. Chemical progression, especially a gradual increase in LDH, was detected in three cases of anaplastic astrocytoma prior to the clinical and radiological deterioration. In the remaining two cases of glioblastoma, neither clinical nor chemical regression was obtained in spite of postoperative adjuvant treatments. In biochemical monitoring of gliomas, total cholesterol, LDH and LDH isozyme values of cystic fluid were especially valuable.

Abstract:OF THE VARIOUS canthoplasties for lengthening the palpebral fissure, those of von Ammon, 1 Agnew, 2 and Blair 3 all require sectioning of the lateral canthal ligament to give the necessary extension. Blaskovics 4 simply resected a triangle of skin at the lateral canthus and pulled the conjunctiva out to cover the bared area. This gives the least satisfactory result. The following technique for lengthening a palpebral fissure has proved effective in my hands and has been most useful. Surgical Technique. —The amount of fissure lengthening desired (usually 4 to 6 mm) is marked off from the lateral canthal angle, point AA ′, to point B , with antiseptic dye. The lateral quarters of the upper and lower lids are split close to the posterior edge, and the whole area included in the broken line arc is undermined. The dissection is not carried beyond B since this is a fixed point.

Abstract:Background: The failure and success rate of students in pharmacy school has been shown to be dependent on some courses that predict academic performance. The study identified factors that could impact failure and academic performances of pharmacy students at Obafemi Awolowo University. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional study of 219 undergraduate pharmacy students from third, fourth and fifth years of a school of pharmacy in Nigeria. A pre-tested questionnaire gathered data on demographics, course perceptions and academic factors. Descriptive and inferential statistics such as percentages, weighted averages, and Chi squared tests were used to analyse the data obtained at p < 0.05. Results: Financial constraints, family challenges, and a lack of peer interaction were significantly associated with repeating a year. Specific courses perceived as difficult included “Pharmaceutical organic chemistry” (PHC 202), “Practical pharmaceutics I” (PHA 201) and “Medicinal chemistry II” (PHC 402). Courses perceived as difficult, particularly in the fourth year, were notably linked to academic stress. Conclusion: The study identified specific factors and courses that affect pharmacy students’ performance in the Nigerian context. Policy makers and faculty can take vital feedback to adjust the training content, methods and assessment system to possibly deliver a holistic education to pharmacy students.

Evaluation of Student Academic Performance After Curricular Content Reduction

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of curricular content reduction in an integrated course sequence spanning 3 years of a Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum on student examination scores and course grades. Methods: This 2-year, prepost study compared student overall average and final examination scores and overall course grades after the transition from a 5-day to a 4-day week of an integrated learning experience (ILE) course sequence. In addition, an anonymous, optional 23-item survey was distributed to first to third year pharmacy students asking about the 4-day week change, how they utilized the non-ILE day, and additional demographic and social characteristics to identify factors influencing success on examination and course performance during the 4-day week. Results: There were 533 students included in the overall analysis, with no significant differences in overall course grades in the 5-day vs 4-day week. Examination scores were not significantly different after the transition, except in 2 of 12 courses where scores were higher and final examination scores were not significantly different, except for higher final examination scores in 1 course during the 5-day week. Significant positive influencers of top quartile of examination performance included prepharmacy grade point average ≥ 3.5, age 25 to 29 years, and prepharmacy coursework at the parent institution, whereas using the non-ILE day primarily to sleep negatively influenced outcomes. Conclusion: Curricular density is a prevalent problem and addressing it at a program level is essential. Reducing curricular content and hours at our institution did not adversely impact student examination and course performance and slight improvement was noted in some areas.
Effect of Choose-Your-Own-Adventure (CYOA) Activities on Pharmacy Student Knowledge

Abstract:Objective: Many strategies are employed in pharmacy education to maintain student engagement through active learning. Gamification, such as the choose-your-own-adventure activity (CYOAA), is one such method. The purpose of this study was to assess improvement in clinical knowledge and retention after implementation of CYOAA. Methods: Two CYOAA were designed and implemented within second-year pharmacy courses. One activity was on venous thromboembolism (VTE) and the other on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Students completed a six question pre- and post-quiz for both activities mapped to core learning objectives and four similar, but more difficult questions on corresponding exams. After the CYOAA, students completed a reflection and perceptions survey. Results: Seventy-five students completed the VTE CYOAA and 77 completed COPD. Over the three timepoints there was a significant decrease in mean assessment scores on the VTE activity (68% to 65% to 40%; p<0.001) versus a significant and sustained increase in mean assessment scores on COPD (62% to 83% to 85%; p<0.001). Of the 36 and 33 students that completed the post-survey, the majority agreed or strongly agreed that they preferred CYOAA to traditional cases and that the activities improved their knowledge, critical thinking skills, and confidence in clinical decision making. Conclusion: There was a mixed result in mean assessment scores with an increase seen with the COPD CYOAA and a decrease with VTE, as well as positive perceptions for both VTE and COPD, indicating that this classroom innovation is well liked and may improve knowledge outcomes.
Assessment of Student Pharmacists' Co-Curricular Professionalization Using an Impact Scale

Abstract:Co-curricular participation is a required component of the pharmacy program. Assessment of co-curricular activities has proven challenging due to lack of manpower to address the workload of reviewing multiple critical reflections. This project documented the professionalization impact of co-curricular involvement and secondarily explored the utility of our assessment tool, the Co-curricular Impact Scale (CIS), developed to streamline the assessment process. First- through third-professional-year students (P1, P2, P3) participated in five co-curricular domains: (i) professional development/education; (ii) patient care service; (iii) legislative advocacy; (iv) leadership/service to the pharmacy profession; and (v) healthcare-related community service. For the CIS, 16 questions were developed and mapped to 11 educational outcomes and included assessing the impact of immersing in an authentic learning experience, collaborating with healthcare professionals, and preparing for the pharmacist role. A group of 296 students rated the impact of participation as low, moderate, or significant for five events annually. Based on 717 entries, the two attributes deemed most impactful were: "Activity immersed me in an authentic learning experience" (95% ≥ Moderate Impact) and "Activity improved my self-confidence" (93% ≥ Moderate Impact). P1 students found slightly less impact in co-curricular participation (83.5%) than P2 (88.4%) and P3 (86.8%) counterparts. The CIS proved to be an efficient method to collate impact of co-curricular involvement upon student professionalization.

Abstract:In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmacy education has shifted from in-person teaching and assessments to the virtual environment. Many education programs had previously adopted objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) to assess communication abilities in-person with standardized patients (SPs). However, comparative student outcome data between virtual and in-person methods as well as guidance on how to conduct communication-based OSCEs in the virtual environment is lacking. The University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SSPPS) describes its methods of conducting two types of communication-based OSCEs (patient counseling and gathering a medical history). Student performance data from the two virtual OSCEs in 2020 was compared to results from two 2019 in-person OSCEs using Mann Whitney U Tests. The 2020 cohort scored significantly higher than the 2019 cohort in all variables (i.e., using effective verbal and non-verbal communication, using patient friendly education, organizing the encounter, demonstrating empathy, establishing trust, professionalism) and in overall score. However, the effect size for these findings indicate the differences between performances are generally small and more likely due to changes in grading patterns due to the pandemic.
Factors associated with pharmacotherapy course learning achievements in Thai pharmacy students

Abstract:Introduction: The doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program is designed for direct patient care experiences. To prepare pharmacy students to have adequate clinical knowledge and skills, pharmacotherapy is a vital course. Due to the difficulties of courses, several students had unsuccessful learning achievements and insufficient clinical skills. The objective was to explore factors associated with pharmacotherapy course learning achievements in pharmacy students. Methods: A cross sectional survey was designed and undertaken in 2020. Pharmacy students who enrolled at least one pharmacotherapy course were included. A 39-item questionnaire was developed and distributed electronically. Content validity and reliability tests (Cronbach's α = 0.928) were performed. Descriptive statistics and univariate and logistic regression were used in this study. Results: The results indicated that four factors were found to be associated with higher grade point average: participation in a study group (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0.47, 95% CI 0.23-0.97) for Pharmacotherapy I; self-assessed success for Pharmacotherapy II and Advanced Pharmacotherapy (adjusted OR 2.67, 95% CI 1.19-6.01 and adjusted OR 3.45, 95% CI 1.03-11.59, respectively); using social media in the classroom (adjusted OR 12.16, 95% CI 2.03-72.72); and motivation by advisors (adjusted OR 640.74, 95% CI 2.03-201,675.55) for Pharmacotherapy III. Moreover, reviewing material after class (adjusted OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.10-0.71) and using social media in the classroom (adjusted OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.01-4.07) revealed the association with cumulative grade point average. Conclusions: There were various factors associated with pharmacotherapy learning achievements. These included factors from learners, instructors, and environment.
Development and implementation of a Community Pharmacy "Bootcamp" activity - A pilot study

Abstract:Objective: The objectives of this study are to describe 1) the implementation of and 2) student performance and perceptions during an innovative classroom activity. Methods: The Bootcamp was designed as an exercise in productive failure for second-year PharmD students enrolled in a community pharmacy elective course. A prescription verification exercise was introduced; however, students were intermittently interrupted with common community pharmacist tasks. To simulate these tasks (e.g.: receiving a phone call, counseling a patient, administering a vaccine, checking controlled prescription monitoring database etc.), students were directed by the instructor to perform other physical activities (e.g. walking around the classroom, doing jumping jacks, sending an email, etc.). After the activity, accuracy was assessed and each student uploaded a video reflection which were analyzed with content analysis. Results: The activity was delivered in person in 2021 and virtually in 2022 during a two-hour class period. Of the 63 students, 86 % fully completed all 12 prescription verifications in the allotted time; however, the average accuracy was 53 %. Content analysis of video reflections generated three themes: unique and fun activity, importance of attention to detail, and enhanced understanding of pharmacy workflow from the pharmacist's perspective. Conclusions: The Community Pharmacy Bootcamp was a fun and engaging way to expose students to the realities of daily practice in the community pharmacy setting. This activity was effective in helping students discover the need for development of further skills in addition to clinical expertise. This novel activity may be adapted to other environments including integration into required coursework.
