Abstract:Recently, the environmental microplastic pollution has aroused wide interdisciplinary attentions. However, the occurrence of microplastics in agricultural soils is rarely understood, especially in eastern China. In this work, the occurrence and characteristic property of microplastics in agricultural soils in Anhui province, which is situated in eastern China, was investigated for the first time according to the density separation and filtration method. The concentration of microplastic in agricultural soils varied from 0.66 to 17.66 (10 3 kg −1 dry soil), and the fiber (~ 55.1%), film (~ 34.7%) were the main types in farmland soils. In addition, the small size (250 ~ 500 μm) was the dominant size of microplastics in agricultural soils in Anhui province. The concentration of microplastics was closely related to geographical location and planting patterns. Meanwhile, the types of microplastics were polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Finally, the environmental risk of microplastics in farmland soil in Anhui Province was evaluated. The overall risk index of farmland soil microplastics in Anhui Province was less than 1000, and the content of soil microplastics was high, but the overall risk level was low.

Abstract:The wide application of facility agriculture accelerated the rapid development of agriculture. However, microplastics pollution in the soil caused by long-term residual agricultural film posed a significant threat to the soil ecosystem and human health. Jingyang County of Shaanxi Province was the largest vegetable planting base in northwest China. Soil samples of facility agriculture and non-facility agriculture were collected to investigate the distribution characteristics and risks of microplastics. The abundance of microplastics in Jingyang County ranged from 200.00 to 4733.33 n·kg-1, and the mean abundance was 1955.00 n·kg-1. Microplastics abundance in facility agriculture soil was higher than that in non-facility agriculture soil, and it increased with the growth of planting years. In general, the size of soil microplastics was mainly <100 μm and the abundance was negatively correlated with particle size. There were 30 types of chemical constituents in the microplastics detected, and PE (47.03 %) and PET (11.48 %) were the main ones. In addition, the types of microplastics in soil were identical with those detected in irrigation water and fertilizer, which provided another source of soil microplastics. All the sampling sites were ecological risk category I, and there was no carcinogenic risk to human health at present. In the future, the government should advocated and encouraged farmers to improve mulch recycling efficiency. Correspondingly, more positive action should be taken to the management on mulch recycling and the standards on placement of waste agricultural inputs. This study would provide foundation data for the research of microplastics pollution in farmland and the risk assessment of ecosystem and human health.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution, a major global concern, has garnered increasing attention in agricultural ecosystem research. China's Hetao Irrigation District, vital for grain production in the Yellow River Basin, lacks sufficient research on microplastic pollution of agricultural soils. This study, based on a detailed background investigation and testing of 47 samples, is the first to elucidate the characteristics and potential influencing factors of microplastics in the Hetao Irrigation District. The abundance of microplastics in the farmland soil ranged from 1810 to 86331 items/kg, with 90% measuring below 180 μm and mainly in film and fragment forms. Predominant polymers were polyethylene (PE, 43.0%) and polyamide (PA, 27.8%). Key pollution influencers were identified as agricultural inputs, with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) being the most extensively used plastic type. The carbonyl index and hydroxyl indices of the detected LDPE microplastics ranged from 0.041 to 0.96 and 0.092 to 1.20, respectively. The study highlights the significance of mulching management and agronomic practices in shaping microplastic characteristics. Potential pollution sources include agricultural inputs, irrigation equipment, domestic waste, and tire wear. Proposed effective strategies include responsible plastic use, robust waste management , and irrigation system upgrades, establishing a foundation for future ecological risk assessments and effective management approaches in the Hetao Irrigation District. Environmental implication The harmful substances studied in this paper are microplastics, which are widely distributed in the environment and have potential ecological risks. This study is the first to investigate the characteristics of microplastics in farmland soil within the Hetao Irrigation Area, a region that is of critical importance to agricultural production in the Yellow River Basin of China. The study provides comprehensive insights into the factors influencing the characteristics of microplastics and speculates on their sources. These findings offer a novel perspective on the assessment of microplastic contamination in the area and provide valuable recommendations for prevention and control measures.

Abstract:Microplastics pollution has been threatening the global environmental security, in which agricultural activities are considered as a main source of microplastics occurrence in soils. However, little is known about the occurrence characteristics of microplastics in agricultural soils with long-term plastic film mulching. Therefore, the abundance, distribution, and composition of microplastics were investigated by analyzing 225 soil samples collected from typical maize ( Zea mays L.) planting zones with and without long-term (>20 years) plastic film mulching in northern China. Microplastics abundance in mulched soils (754 ± 477 items kg –1 ) was significantly higher than that in non-mulched soils (376 ± 149 items kg –1 ), which indicated that plastic film mulching contributed half of microplastics in soils. Moreover, microplastics abundance was significantly positively related to the length of time with film mulching applied. The percentage of microplastics <0.5 mm in mulched soils (50.9%) was significantly lower than that in non-mulched soils (62.2%). Microplastics abundance and size in mulched and non-mulched soils decreased with increased soil depth. Most microplastics were fragments of polypropylene, films of polyethylene, and fibers of polyester. The proportion of films in mulched soils was significantly higher than in non-mulched soils, whereas that of fibers was significantly higher in non-mulched soils. This study confirmed that long-term plastic film mulching increases microplastics pollution in agricultural soils, warranting further evaluation of the associated ecological risks of microplastics in soil ecosystems.

Abstract:Plastic debris (including macro-plastics, microplastics (MPs), and nanoplastics), defined as an emerging contaminant, has been proven to significantly affect soil ecosystem functioning. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to robustly quantify the pollution situation and potential sources of plastics in soils. China as the leading producer and user of agricultural plastics is analyzed as a typical case study to highlight the current situation of farmland macro-plastics and MPs. Our study summarized information on the occurrence and abundance of macro-plastics and MPs in Chinese farmland soils for the first time based on 163 publications with 728 sample sites. The results showed that the average concentration of macro-plastics, and the abundance of MPs in Chinese farmlands were 103 kg ha −1 and 4537 items kg −1 (dry soil), respectively. In addition, this study synthesized the latest scientific evidence on sources of macro-plastics and MPs in farmland soils. Agricultural plastic films and organic wastes are the most reported sources, indicating that they contribute significantly to plastic debris in agricultural soils. Furthermore, the modeling methods for quantifying macro-plastics and MPs in soils and estimating the stock and flow of plastic materials within agricultural systems were also summarized.

Abstract:Agricultural soil is subject to the serious contamination of microplastics (MPs) derived from the intensive agricultural activities. The representative sites under different farming practices (mulching, greenhouse, or traditional plantation) were selected, with soil samples collected from shallow (0–5 cm) and deep (5–10 cm) layers. Results showed that the distribution of MPs varied greatly with sites, with the abundance ranging from 373 ± 236 to 7 888 ± 1 797 items kg −1 . Meanwhile, MPs in deep soil appeared to have higher abundance and smaller size compared to those in shallow layer, indicating the vertical transport of MPs especially the small ones. Overall, MPs with the size of < 1 mm, the shapes of fragment and fiber, and the colors of black, white, and transparent, individually played the most contribution. Furthermore, laser direct infrared spectroscopy (LDIR) and micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (μ-FTIR) were applied for identification of MPs, and 20 polymer types were identified. Among them, polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene were the primary types. The distribution of MPs revealed that facility agriculture application (such as mulching and greenhouse) led to more serious MP pollution in farmland, while the diverse characteristics of MPs inferred multiple sources other than agricultural plastic film/net. The surface morphology and elemental composition of typical MPs were characterized, showing polymer-special weathering features and multiple chemical pollutants (such as Ti, Br, and Cu) on MPs. This work provided a comprehensive insight into MP pollution in agricultural soil, thus, to better understand MP potential environmental risk to soil system.

Abstract:<p>Microplastics become one of the serious persistent pollutants in terrestrial environments, and thus may represent a threat to the quality of soil and inhabiting organisms. It is imperative to understand occurrence and distribution of microplastics in soils. In this study, a large-scale field survey encompassing 85 locations along the lower reaches of Yangtze River and estuary was performed to investigate the microplastics abundance in agricultural soils. Microplastics were isolated from all the samples and all depths (0–80 cm). The microplastics abundance in soils ranged from 4.94 items/kg to 252.70 items/kg, with an average of 37.32 items/kg. The most common microplastic type detected was Polypropylene (PP) occurring as white fragments with sizes ranging from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm. Abiotic parameters such as soil pH and texture were the general factors being associated with microplastic abundance. Meantime, traffic was indicated as one important factor to affect the microplastic abundance. Overall, the road input seems to be the main source of microplastic pollution in agricultural areas along the Yangtze River and estuary. Further studies should elucidate the original of the plastic fragments in order to establish a baseline for regulative initiatives securing environmental protection.</p>

Abstract:Soil microplastic pollution is ubiquitous, but the vertical distribution characteristics of microplastics in different land use types are unclear. In this study, the microplastic abundance, particle size, shape, color, and polymer type in 0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, and 40-60 cm soil layers of seven land use types (woodland, grassland, maize, wheat, cotton, polytunnel, and greenhouse) were systematically investigated in Shouguang City, a typical agricultural city in China. The results showed that the average microplastic abundance from top to deep for the three soil layers of Shouguang City were 1948.1 ± 992.5, 1349.4 ± 654, and 670.1 ± 341.6 items kg-1. In the top soil layer (0-20 cm), the abundance of microplastics in facility soils was significantly higher than in other land use types. In agricultural soils, microplastics were predominantly small size (<0.5 mm), films and fragments, PE and PP. The average microplastic abundance in deep soils (40-60 cm) of the seven land use types was 349.1 ± 62.8 (woodland), 284.9 ± 113.9 (grassland), 657.1 ± 127.1 (maize), 537.8 ± 137.4 (wheat), 851.4 ± 204.2 (cotton), 878.5 ± 295.7 (polytunnel), 1132.2 ± 304.5 (greenhouse) items kg-1, respectively, accounting for 11 % to 19 % in all three soil layers. The percentage of small size and pellet microplastics increased in deep soils (40-60 cm). Correlation analysis showed that soil environmental factors (pH, EC, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and organic carbon) influenced to different extents the distribution, fragmentation, and transport of microplastics. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of contamination and vertical distribution of soil microplastics in agricultural and non-agricultural soils, as well as provide important data for the development of preventive and management policies.
Distribution Characteristics of Microplastics in Agricultural Soils from the Largest Vegetable Production Base in China

Abstract:The study area is situated in Shouguang City, Shandong Province, as the largest greenhouse vegetable production base in Northern China. Samples of facility agricultural soil, open-field agricultural soil, and agricultural plastic mulch film were collected to investigate the distribution characteristics, influencing factors, and discharging sources of microplastics (MPs). Microplastic abundance of three soil layers at all sampling sites ranged from 310 to 5698 items/kg, with an average value of 1444 +/- 986 items/kg. The main size category of MPs was less than 0.5 mm, and the contribution of MPs with sizes <0.5 mm in the 10-25 cm layer of facility agricultural soils was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that in the 0-5 an soil layer, which indicated that small MPs tended to migrate to deeper soil layers. The prevailing shapes of MPs were fragment and film, while polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, and polyethylene dominated among chemical compositions. The fractions of silty and sandy particles were correlated with the abundance of MPs, and the microplastic abundance in sandy loam was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that in silty loam or loam based on the international classification standard. Thus, the soil texture may affect the distribution of MPs in local agricultural soils. In addition, the planting age of facility agricultural soil was related to microplastic abundance, while there was no significant difference in the microplastic abundances of facility agricultural soils under different irrigation methods. Abstract:A large number of plastic products are used in the process of agricultural production, and the recycling efficiency is low, which leads to the production of a large number of microplastics. Therefore, the microplastic contamination in agricultural areas requires being investigated urgently. In addition, the occurrence characteristics of microplastics are also different in agricultural areas with various land use modes. In this study, the main agricultural areas in Xinjiang are taken as the research object. The abundance of microplastics in the main agricultural areas in Xinjiang ranges from 288 to 1452 items/kg. The shape of microplastics is mainly bulks, and white microplastics account for the highest proportion, and the majority of their sizes are less than 0.5 mm. The risk assessment results show that the contamination risk index of microplastics in this area is 108.92 and the risk level is grade III. The research shows that there is little difference in the abundance of microplastics between paddy field and garden land, which may be because there are few sources of microplastics in the land of these two utilization modes, and the potential pollution sources are similar, such as the atmospheric deposition of microplastics, the falling of fibers on people's clothes during farming, and the agricultural use of sludge. This study can provide a reference for further study on the existing circumstances of microplastics in agricultural areas.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution in the soil environment has gathered widespread attention. However, little is known about the effects of land use and landscape patterns on the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in the soil. Herein, the microplastic pollution in different land uses (facility farmland, traditional farmland, orchard, grassland, and woodland) in Yuanmou County, Yunnan Province was investigated. The results showed that the abundance of microplastic ranged from 50.000 to 3450.0 items·kg−1, with an average abundance of 595.00 ± 740.00 items·kg−1 and a median of 375.00 items·kg−1. Microplastics were found to primarily be green-coloured (28.4 %), fragment (72.7 %) in shape, <1 mm (75.7 %) in size, and composed of polypropylene (51.4 %). There were significant differences in the abundance and characteristics of the microplastics between different land use types. Microplastic abundance in facility farmlands, traditional farmlands, and orchard lands was significantly higher than that of grasslands and woodlands (p < 0.05). The main shape of the microplastics in facility farmlands, traditional farmlands, and orchards was fragments and it was fibers in grasslands and woodlands. The median particle size of microplastics in facility farmlands (539.50 μm) and traditional farmlands (574.00 μm), was smaller than those in the orchard (737.60 μm), grasslands (697.60 μm), and woodlands (1239.4 μm). Discrepancies among different land uses may be due to various reasons, such as different pollution sources and the weathering degree of microplastics. The results of the redundancy analysis showed that the microplastic abundance was negatively correlated with the largest patch index. It also showed that microplastic pollution was closely related to human activities. This study provides an important basis for further research on microplastic ecosystem risks that are associated with land use and provides a data basis for formulating effective prevention and control strategies and measures to mitigate soil microplastic pollution.

Abstract:Although microplastic pollution in the soil environment is currently an important research topic, few studies have focused on farmland soil in arid regions. This study investigated the abundances, sizes, polymer compositions, and forms of microplastics across nine agricultural plots cultivated with maize, sunflower, and potato (three of each crop) plants to determine the influences of different cropping characteristics and agricultural practices. The study area was within the arid region of the Ulungur River basin in Qinghe County, Altay, Xinjiang, China. The main forms of microplastics were fragments and fibers, and polyethylene was the dominant polymer (91.6%). The microplastic abundance ranged from 11 347 items/kgdw to 78 061 items/kgdw (mean of 52 081.7 items/kgdw). The abundance and proportion of microplastics with a diameter of <0.2 mm were significantly higher in the sunflower and maize plots (i.e., tall crops) than in the potato plots (i.e., short crops) (p < 0.05). This is due to straw residues affecting the migration and recovery of the mulch. The abundance and fragmentation of microplastics were significantly higher in the sunflower and maize plots where plastic mulch was extensively used because these tall crops anchored the mulch near their stem–root systems. The mulch was then slowly aged (e.g., via wind erosion) before being fragmented due to agricultural practices (e.g., mechanical plowing and residue retention). Although microplastics sourced from mulch are probably immobilized by straw residues in the short term, fragile and easily broken pieces of mulch are eventually released into the soil due to agricultural practices. The findings suggest that different cropping characteristics can affect the abundance and fragmentation of microplastics in agricultural soils, even within the same region, and thus the level and type of microplastic pollution. Traditional plastic mulch should be replaced with biodegradable mulch to reduce microplastic pollution in agricultural fields.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) in agricultural soils could affect the safety of food crops. However, most relevant studies have paid scant attention to the crop fields and focused more on MPs in farmlands with or without film mulching in different regions. To detect MPs, we investigated farmland soils with >30 typical crop species from 109 cities in 31 administrative districts across mainland China. The relative contributions of different MP sources in different farmlands were estimated in detail based on a questionnaire survey, and we also assessed the ecological risks of MPs. Our results indicated the order of MP abundances in farmlands with different crop types, namely fruit fields > vegetable fields > mixed crop fields > food crop fields > cash crop fields. For the detailed sub-types, the highest MP abundance was detected in grape fields, which was significantly higher than that in solanaceous & cucurbitaceous vegetable fields (ranked second, p < 0.05), whereas the MP abundance was lowest in cotton and maize fields. The total contributions of three potential sources, namely livestock and poultry manure, irrigation water, and atmospheric deposition to MPs, varied depending on the crop types in the farmlands. Owing to exposure to MPs, the potential ecological risks to agroecosystems across mainland China were not negligible, particularly in fruit fields. The results of the current study could provide basic data and background information for future ecotoxicological studies and relevant regulatory strategies.

Abstract:Microplastics are emerging pollutants which have been extensively detected in water environments. However, little is known about microplastic pollution in soil environments. In this study, we investigated microplastics and mesoplastics in farmland soils from twenty vegetable fields around the suburbs of Shanghai. In each site, three duplicate soil samples were collected from shallow (0–3 cm) and deep soils (3–6 cm), respectively. Microplastics (sizes of 20 μm - 5 mm) and mesoplastics (5 mm - 2 cm) were detected using methods of density extraction, 30% H2O2 digestion and micro-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The abundance of microplastics was 78.00 ± 12.91 and 62.50 ± 12.97 items kg−1 in shallow and deep soils, respectively. While, mesoplastics were found with abundance of 6.75 ± 1.51 and 3.25 ± 1.04 items kg−1 in shallow and deep soils. Among these micro(meso)plastics, 48.79% and 59.81% were in size of <1 mm in shallow and deep soils. The main morphotypes of microplastics included fiber, fragment and film, mostly in color of black or transparent. Moreover, we found that topsoil contained higher concentrations and larger sizes of micro(meso)plastics than deep soil. In addition, the vast majority of micro(meso)plastics were polypropylene (50.51%) and polyethylene (43.43%). Abstract:Microplastic pollution in agricultural soils has drawn significant attention in recent years. The objective of this study is to investigate the forms and characteristics of microplastic pollution in agricultural soils, specifically focusing on rice and vegetable soil in Xiangtan City. Various analytical techniques including stereomicroscopy, SEM, and FTIR spectroscopy were used to analyze the color, particle size, abundance, and types of microplastics in the study area. The findings indicated that the average abundance of microplastics in the soils in the study area was 4377.44 items/kg, with a maximum of 12,292.33 items/kg. Microplastics with smaller particle sizes were more prevalent, with their colors mainly being yellow, transparent, and black. The shapes of the microplastics were mainly thin-filmy and fibrous, and the types mainly included PE and PP. The abundance of microplastics in the vegetable soil with agricultural films applied was four times more than that without agricultural films. In the research area, the use of agricultural films was the most significant source of microplastics. The study's findings describe the characteristics of microplastic pollution in agricultural soils in Xiangtan City. The findings could serve as a reference for establishing standardized assessments of microplastic pollution in agricultural soils, in addition to offering data support for Xiangtan City's future efforts to safeguard agricultural soils and regulate microplastic pollution.

Abstract:More attention has been paid to ubiquitous microplastics (MPs). As a major food producer, the situation of MPs in China's farmland is of even greater concern. Spatial distributions, characteristics, and compositions of MPs in five types of agricultural lands with representative crops were investigated by collecting 477 soil samples from 109 cities in 31 administrative regions of mainland China. To better control MPs in farmland, nearly 400 field questionnaires were obtained, and meteorological conditions, soil properties, and other statistics were collected to quantify potential sources and determine influencing factors. The average abundances of MPs was 2462 ± 3767 items/kg in the agricultural soils, and MP abundance in the greenhouses, farmlands with film mulching, and blank farmlands from four integrated physical geographic regions were determined. The contributions of agricultural films, livestock and poultry manures, irrigation water, and air deposition to MPs in farmlands have been calculated. Influencing factors, such as recovery method, plowing frequency, meteorological conditions, and part of soil properties, were significantly correlated with the abundances of MPs in the agricultural soils (p < 0.05), while mulching age mainly affected MPs in the greenhouses (p < 0.05). This study provides basic scientific data for decision-making and further analysis.
Significant influence of land use types and anthropogenic activities on the distribution of microplastics in soil: A case from a typical mining-agricultural city

Abstract:Microplastics pollution in soil has become a prominent issue in the field of ecological environment. However, relevant data on the microplastics pollution characteristics in mining industry-agricultural soil ecosystems is still limited. In this study, an extensive investigation on the characteristics of microplastics pollution in typical mining-agricultural city soil was conducted, revealing abundances, features, and influencing factors of microplastics in five land use types including facility farmland (FF), traditional farmland (TF), residential land (RL), industrial land (IL), and grassland (GL). The results showed that the distribution of microplastics abundances exhibits a nonuniform pattern, and the highest microplastics abundance was found in FF (3738 ± 2097 items·kg-1) compared with the other four land use types of this study area. Moreover, the key polymers identified were polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) with a smaller size (<0.01 mm) accounting for the majority at ,45 %, primary colors of microplastics were transparent with the dominant shapes being fibers and fragments. Additionally, principal component analysis and cluster analysis characterized microplastics features across various land use patterns, revealing that agricultural plastic waste, irrigation, and fertilization may be the main the primary sources of agricultural microplastics, while domestic sewage, household waste (include construction waste), and mining transportation activities are the potential urban sources. Correlation analysis indicates a positive relationship between TN, TP, SOC, and the abundances of microplastics (P < 0.05), and a negative relationship between pH and microplastic abundances. Furthermore, Cd, Cu, and As exhibit a significant positive correlation with microplastic characteristics (P < 0.05). Notably, the distribution trends of Cd content and microplastic abundance are similar. Overall, comprehensive analysis of environmental dynamics on microplastics in agricultural soil in coal industrial cities is crucial for developing effective measures to prevent and control microplastic pollution.
