Abstract:Photocatalytic membranes prepared with semiconductor nanoparticles embedded in a polymer film offer a convenient approach to direct the electron and hole flow and separate reduction and oxidation products. We have now embedded In2S3 and ZnS semiconductor nanoparticles in a Nafion membrane to induce photocatalytic reactions using visible light. In addition, we incorporated a viologen redox relay within the membrane to facilitate electron transfer to thionine (TH) dissolved in water. By inserting the photocatalytic membrane in a H-cell, we can separate the oxidation and reduction products and track the electron flow using steady-state photolysis and transient absorption spectroscopy. The enhanced charge separation in the In2S3 and ZnS heterostructure at 50:50 loading allowed us to maximize the electron-transfer yield. Directing such vectorial charge transfer in a photocatalytic membrane will be useful in suppressing undesired side reactions (e.g., re-oxidation of a reduced product) and facilitating product separation.

Abstract:To take full advantage of solar energy, a memory-catalyst Ag/BiOCl/Ti3C2 was fabricated using a two-step precipitation method, which performed well in the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in the light and dark. The generation of reactive oxygen species in the light and dark were both certified. Furthermore, quenching experiments and quantum lifetime measurements demonstrated the excited-electron transfer process, and these tests confirmed the electron (e- ) transformation resulting from the localized surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR) in two-electron donors, Ag NPs and Ti3C2.Further, the calculation using COMSOL software suggested the enhancement of the electric field through modification of the two co-catalysts mentioned above. Because of this enhancement, the activated e- might be further reacted in the dark for the memory-catalysis process. On the other hand, based on the result of IR thermal imaging, the thermal transmission for formation using LSPR might be another factor in promoting memory catalysis as an energy resource. This work demonstrates for the first time that LSPR might actuate memorycatalysis using e- transmission and energy input, and the results shed light on the design and comprehension of memory photocatalysis for its practical use in pollutant removal and other fields.
Controllable Synthesis of Silver Cyanamide As a New Semiconductor Photocatalyst under Visible-Light Irradiation

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis has attracted great interest as a promising strategy to achieve sustainable energy generation and realize environmental remediation. High-efficiency and visible-light-driven semiconductor photocatalysts have been pursued during the past decades to overcome the drawbacks of the widely-studied TiO2 photocatalyst. Here, we report a new n-type silver cyanamide (Ag2NCN) semiconductor with a direct band gap of about 2.30 eV, which can utilize visible-light for water photooxidation and organic contaminant decomposition. In order to investigate the optical, photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties, various aqueous solution methods are developed to synthesize Ag2NCN nanoparticles (<100 nm), microparticles (up to 20 mu m) and nanograined (20 nm) thin films. It is found that the as-prepared nanoparticles exhibit unique absorption and photoluminescence properties. Nano/microparticles show high photocatalytic performance for organic dye degradation, indicating that Ag2NCN is an efficient visible-light-driven photocatalyst. Additionally, nanograined thin films can be assembled into a photoelectrochemical cell for water photooxidation and photocurrent generation. These findings have provided the first evidence that transition metal cyanamides may be promising functional materials for solar energy utilization.

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of semiconductor is extremely limited due to the rapid recombination of photo-generated carriers and low utilization of solar energy. Herein, a novel Ag-AgI/Sb 2 S 3 (A-S) heterojunction with superior photocatalytic activity was synthesized, in which the optimal Ag-AgI/Sb 2 S 3 heterojunction exhibited 31 times photocatalytic activity of metronidazole removal than that of than that of Sb 2 S 3 . The excellent performance of the prepared photocatalysts could be attributed to the synergy of surface plasmon resonance effect by in situ-generated Ag nanoparticles and the built-in electric field of heterostructure, which would broaden the response range of solar light and accelerate the transfer of photogenerated carriers. Besides, characterization and theoretical calculations confirm Ag atoms acquire abundant electrons from Sb atoms of Sb 2 S 3 , allowing Ag + to reduce to Ag 0 . Meanwhile, a portion of the Ag 0 plasma-induced hot electrons reduce O 2 to ·O 2 – , while the remaining portion flows to AgI and circulates in AgI and Ag 0 to form a closed loop, thus eliminating the photo-corrosion of AgI. The stability of A-S photocatalyst was also confirmed by five cycle-tests. Furthermore, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism was proposed by analyzing the intermediates of metronidazole. This work has implications for designing efficient photocatalysts using high-performance materials based on Ag nanoparticles.

Abstract:Ag-containing semiconductors have gained great attention due to their outstanding visible light-responsive photocatalytic properties. In the current work, silver oxide (Ag 2 O) nanoparticles were in situ self-grown on the surface of AgZr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 NASICON-type material using sodium hydroxide-assisted precipitation to form an Ag 2 O/Ag 1-x Na x Zr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 nanocomposite. The crystalline structures, morphological observations, elemental composition, and optical properties of the prepared product were carried out using various characterization methods. The photocatalytic performance of Ag 2 O/Ag 1-x Na x Zr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 has then been explored in the decomposition of methyl orange (MO) wastewater pollutant under visible light . The obtained photocatalyst exhibited excellent decomposition efficiency (95.08 %, k = 0.0303 min −1 ) for MO removal within 60 min. In addition, the prepared nanocomposite exhibited proper reusability even after five successive cycles without any significant loss in photocatalytic activities . Furthermore, a simple catalyst regeneration strategy based on hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) was adopted, revealing that the spent photocatalyst can achieve nearly total self-regeneration to the initial AgZr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 material.

Abstract:Ternary chalcogenide AgBiS2 nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as a new environmentally friendly material for non-toxic solution-processed solar cells, with a record efficiency of ~9%. To date, however, this has been achieved with NCs that undergo a ligand exchange process exclusively in the solid-state increasing the manufacturing complexity and cost. Improving surface passivation has been the main route towards high performance nanocrystal based solar cell devices, with current strategies relying on methods that only diversifying the types of passivation ligands in solutions or stepwise ex-situ additional ligands treatment. Herein, we report a post-deposition in-situ passivation strategy for AgBiS2 NC inks involving a multifunctional molecular agent that serves to provide effective colloidal dispersibility of the nanocrystal ink, as well as to passivate nanocrystal surfaces after film deposition via in-situ dissociation of chloride ions as atomic surface passivants. We show that, upon improved colloidal dispersibility and surface passivation, AgBiS2 NCs yield thin films free from morphological defects with low trap-state density and balanced charge carrier mobilities. As a result, this process leads to ultrathin-film solar cells with a fill-factor of 72% and a power conversion efficiency in excess of 10%, setting a new record for eco-friendly, solution-processed ultrathin solar cells.

Abstract:AgInS2 nanoparticles with superior visible light photocatalytic activity were successfully synthesized by a microwave hydrothermal method. This method is a highly efficient and rapid route that involves no organic solvents, catalysts, or surfactants. The photocatalytic activity of AgInS2 nanoparticles was investigated through the degradation of dyes under visible light irradiation. Compared with TiO2−xNx, AgInS2 has exhibited a superior activity for photocatalytic degradation MO under the same condition. The experiment results showed that superoxide radicals (O2−), hydrogen peroxides (H2O2) and holes (h+) were the mainly active species for the degradation of organic pollutants over AgInS2. Through the determination of flat band potential, the energy band structure of the sample was obtained. A possible mechanism for the degradation of organic pollutant over AgInS2 was proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, various semiconductor photocatalysts have been developed for wastewater treatment. However, traditional bulk photocatalysts suffer from powder agglomeration, difficult recovery, and secondary pollution, which hinders their large-scale application. Herein, the in-situ growth of carbon quantum dots/graphitic carbon nitride (CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 ) was successfully achieved on flexible silica nanofiber membranes (SiO 2 NFMs), which were synthesized by combining electrospinning with thermal polycondensation. It was found that the conversion of smooth membranes into porous surfaces due to the thermal etching effect of alkaline atmosphere during the creation of CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 , which not only facilitated the adsorption of tetracycline (TC), but also provided more active sites for photodegradation. Under visible light irradiation, the obtained CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 @SiO 2 NFMs showed exceptional photocatalytic activity toward TC, with first order kinetic constants of 3.88 and 48.86 times greater than g-C 3 N 4 @SiO 2 NFMs and SiO 2 NFMs, respectively. The radical trapping experiments revealed that •O 2 − , 1 O 2 , h + , and •OH were the active species in photocatalytic degradation. The photocatalytic degradation was evaluated under initial pH, inorganic anions, and natural aqueous substrate, which shows good applicability. In addition, CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 @SiO 2 NFMs exhibited high stability and reusability. And the integrated composite membranes can be directly recovered from water after the immobilization of photocatalysts. To sum up, with the advantages of high photocatalytic activity, flexibility, easy separation, and recovery, CQDs/g-C 3 N 4 @SiO 2 NFMs are prospective catalysts for practical applications in water remediation.

Abstract:We present a novel porous Au-Ag alloy particles inlaid AgCl membrane as plasmonic catalytic interfaces with real-time, in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) monitoring. The Au-Ag alloy particles inlaid AgCl membranes were obtained via a facile two-step, air-exposed, and room-temperature immersion reaction with appropriate annealing process. Owing to the designed integration of semiconductor component AgCl and noble metal Au-Ag particles, both the catalytic reduction and visible-light-driven photo catalytic activities toward organic contaminants were attained. Specifically, the efficiencies of about 94% of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP, 5 x 10(-5) M) reduction after 8 min of reaction, and degradation of rhodamine 6G (R6G, 10(-5) M) after 12 min of visible light irradiation were demonstrated. Moreover, efficiencies of above 85% of conversion of 4-NP to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) and 90% of R6G degradation were achieved as well after 6 cycles of reactions, by which robust recyclability was confirmed. Further, with distinct SERS signals generated simultaneously from the surfaces of Au-Ag particles under laser excitation, in situ SEES monitoring of the process of catalytic reactions with superior sensitivity and linearity has been realized. Overall, the capability of the Au-Ag particles inlaid AgCl membranes to provide SEES monitored catalytic and visible-light-driven photocatalytic conversion of organic pollutants, along with their mild and cost-effective fabrication method, would make sense for in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of (photo)catalytic reactions, and also future development of potable, multifunctional and integrated catalytic and sensing devices.
Ag@SnS/PVDF Membranes with Self-Cleaning Ability Driven by Photocatalysis Process

Abstract:Coupling photocatalysis with membrane separation technology becomes one pioneering method to solve the membrane fouling. In this study, Ag@SnS photocatalyst was synthesized and blended with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to fabricate Ag@SnS/PVDF composite membranes via non-solvent induce phase separation (NIPS) method. The results show that with the addition of Ag@SnS, water flux of Ag@SnS/PVDF hybrid membranes increases due to the enhanced membrane hydrophilicity and increased porosity. The optimal hybrid membrane (MAS-2) exhibits the rejection rate of 97.0 % and 95.4 % for BSA and HA accompanied with a water permeance of 578.5 L m- 2 h-1 bar-1. Moreover, MAS-2 membrane reveals excellent self-cleaning ability by photodegradation of HA on membrane surface, and its flux recovery rate (FRR) can achieve 91.7 % after UV irradiation and 95.8 % after 3 h natural sunlight irradiation via photocatalysis regeneration. The heterostructure of Ag@SnS can assist separation of photoinduced electrons and holes by transferring photoinduced electrons to Ag nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic activity. After three cycles, the FRR can still reach around 90.0 %, revealing its outstanding cleaning ability. Therefore, the Ag@SnS/PVDF membranes have a foreseeable potential in the field of water treatment due to its high flux performance, self-cleaning ability via photocatalysis process.
Nanostructured Gallium Nitride Membrane at Wafer Scale for Photo(Electro)catalytic Polluted Water Remediation

Abstract:A nitride semiconductor nanostructured membrane is fabricated for a solar‐driven dye degradation utility. The reusable wafer‐scale membrane operates stably at outdoor with an outstanding dye degradation efficiency of >92%, providing satisfied and repeatable total organic carbon removal rate of ≈50%. The pathway for practical wastewater treatment using natural sunlight is thus demonstrated. Photo(electro)catalysis methods have drawn significant attention for efficient, energy‐saving, and environmental‐friendly organic contaminant degradation in wastewater. However, conventional oxide‐based powder photocatalysts are limited to UV‐light absorption and are unfavorable in the subsequent postseparation process. In this paper, a large‐area crystalline‐semiconductor nitride membrane with a distinct nanoporous surface is fabricated, which can be scaled up to a full wafer and easily retrieved after photodegradation. The unique nanoporous surface enhances broadband light absorption, provides abundant reactive sites, and promotes the dye‐molecule reaction with adsorbed hydroxyl radicals on the surface. The superior electric contact between the nickel bottom layer and nitride membrane facilitates swift charge carrier transportation. In laboratory tests, the nanostructure membrane can degrade 93% of the dye in 6 h under illumination with a small applied bias (0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl). Furthermore, a 2 inch diameter wafer‐scale membrane is deployed in a rooftop test under natural sunlight. The membrane operates stably for seven cycles (over 50 h) with an outstanding dye degradation efficiency (>92%) and satisfied average total organic carbon removal rate (≈50%) in each cycle. This demonstration thus opens the pathway toward the production of nanostructured semiconductor layers for large‐scale and practical wastewater treatment using natural sunlight.

Abstract:AgIn5S8 (AIS) nanoparticles with excellent photocatalytic performance were synthesized by a convenient low temperature co-precipitation process. The growth mechanism of AIS in the reaction system was studied in terms of reaction time, which had obvious effect on the composition, morphology, and photoelectrochemical properties of the resulting samples. During the co-precipitation process, the initially formed Ag2S precipitate gradually transformed to AIS, which was obtained after reacting for 2 h. Although AIS with better crystallization can be obtained by further extending the reaction time to 12 h, the sample S-2 obtained at 2 h showed the best photocatalytic degradation performance towards several organic pollutants, including methyl orange (MO), malachite green (MG), o-nitrophenol (2-NP), p-nitrophenol (4-NP), p-fluorophenol (PFP) and bisphenol A (BPA). In addition, the photocatalytic reduction efficiency of S-2 towards 40 mg/L Cr(VI) reached 98.5% in 80 min. The possible presence of defects in S-2 caused by the phase transition process contribute to the enhancement of photocatalytic performance. Several characterization methods, including UV–vis DRS, photoluminescence (PL), and photoelectrochemical analysis demonstrated that S-2 had the fastest separation efficiency of photoinduced charge carries and the narrowest bandgap among all the synthesized samples, resulting the improvement of photocatalytic activity. A possible visible-right-driven photocatalytic mechanism was proposed in combination with the bandgap (Eg), conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB) position of AgIn5S8. The radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) results revealed that •O2 −, h+ and •OH were involved in the photocatalytic process.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis is an important research problem relevant to a variety of sustainable energy technologies. However, obtaining high photocatalytic efficiency from visible light absorbing semiconductors is challenging due to a combination of weak absorption, transport losses, and low activity. Aspects of this problem have been addressed by multilayer approaches, which provide a general scheme for engineering surface reactivity and stability independent of electronic considerations. However, an analogous broad framework for optimizing light–matter interactions has not yet been demonstrated. Here, we establish a photonic approach using semiconductor metasurfaces that is highly effective in enhancing the photocatalytic activity of GaAs, a high-performance semiconductor with a near-infrared bandgap. Our engineered pillar arrays with heights of ∼150 nm exhibit Mie resonances near 700 nm that result in near-unity absorption and exhibit a field profile that maximizes charge carrier generation near the solid–liquid interface, enabling short transport distances. Our hybrid metasurface photoanodes facilitate oxygen evolution and exhibit enhanced incident photon-to-current efficiencies that are ∼22× larger than a corresponding thin film for resonant excitation and 3× larger for white light illumination. Key to these improvements is the preferential generation of photogenerated carriers near the semiconductor interface that results from the field enhancement profile of magnetic dipolar-type modes.

Abstract:Crystal phase and morphology control of nano semiconductor materials play a key role on the optimization of their applications. Here, hollow beta-In2S3 nanoparticles (NPs) with higher surface area were synthesized via an anion exchange process under a hydrothermal condition. The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of the hollow beta-In2S3 NPs were evaluated using Methylene blue (MB) as a model probe both under dark and visible light irradiation. The fast absorption and large adsorption capacity (ca. 157.99 mg/g within 60 min) for MB in the solution were associated to the high specific surface area (324.6 m(2)/g) of the beta-In2S3 NPs as well as the electrostatic interaction between the beta-In2S3 and MB molecule, indicating that adsorption approach plays a crucial role for removing MB from solution. After the adsorption reaction, visible light photocatalytic reaction further degrades the remaining MB in the system. The highest removal efficiency of 100 mg/L of MB solution reached 73.4% under dark for 60 min, and further increased to 92.2% after visible light irradiation for 180 min. The Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetics were used for the model of the adsorption behavior of MB onto the In2S3 sample. The as-prepared hollow In2S3 NPs might be anticipated to be used in dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Nature controls the assembly of complex architectures through self-limiting processes; however, few artificial strategies to mimic these processes have been reported to date. Here we demonstrate a system comprising two types of nanocrystal (NC), where the self-limiting assembly of one NC component controls the aggregation of the other. Our strategy uses semiconducting InP/ZnS core-shell NCs (3 nm) as effective assembly modulators and functional nanoparticle surfactants in cucurbit[n]uril-triggered aggregation of AuNCs (5-60 nm), allowing the rapid formation (within seconds) of colloidally stable hybrid aggregates. The resultant assemblies efficiently harvest light within the semiconductor substructures, inducing out-of-equilibrium electron transfer processes, which can now be simultaneously monitored through the incorporated surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy-active plasmonic compartments. Spatial confinement of electron mediators (for example, methyl viologen (MV2+)) within the hybrids enables the direct observation of photogenerated radical species as well as molecular recognition in real time, providing experimental evidence for the formation of elusive σ-(MV+)2 dimeric species. This approach paves the way for widespread use of analogous hybrids for the long-term real-time tracking of interfacial charge transfer processes, such as the light-driven generation of radicals and catalysis with operando spectroscopies under irreversible conditions.

Abstract:Careful genotyping of three families, each having a member with classical salt‐losing steroid 21‐hydroxylase deficiency, has allowed identification of carrier haplotypes. Digestion with TaqI or EcoRI and probing with a cDNA probe for the 21‐hydroxylase genes (pC21/3c) revealed that all six affected haplotypes are abnormal with at least EcoRI. The data suggest that there is extreme polymorphism of the 21‐hydroxylase genes and that dysfunction may result from several different abnormalities.
Designing a novel heterostructure AgInS2@MIL-101(Cr) photocatalyst from PET plastic waste for tetracycline degradation

Abstract:Semiconductor-containing porous materials with a well-defined structure could be unique scaffolds for carrying out selective organic transformations driven by visible light. We herein introduce for the first time a heterostructure of silver indium sulfide (AgInS2) ternary chalcogenide and a highly porous MIL-101(Cr) metal-organic framework (MOF) synthesised from polyethylene terephthalate plastic waste. Our results demonstrate that AgInS2 nanoparticles were uniformly attached to each lattice plane of the octahedral MIL-101(Cr) structure, resulting in a nanocomposite with a high distribution of semiconductors in a porous media. We also demonstrate that the nanocomposite with up to 40% of AgInS2 doping exhibited excellent catalytic activity for tetracycline degradation under visible light irradiation (~99% tetracycline degraded after 4 h) and predominantly maintained its performance after five cycles. These results could promote a new material circularity pathway to develop new semiconductors that can be used to protect water from further pollution.

Abstract:2D layered ferroelectric materials such as CuInP$_2$S6 (CIPS) are promising candidates for novel and high-performance photocatalysts, owning to their ultrathin layer thickness, strong interlayer coupling, and intrinsic spontaneous polarization, while how to control the photocatalytic activity in layered CIPS remains unexplored. In this work, we report for the first time the photocatalytic activity of ferroelectric CIPS for the chemical deposition of silver nanostructures (AgNSs). The results show that the shape and spatial distribution of AgNSs on CIPS are tunable by controlling layer thickness, environmental temperature, and light wavelength. The ferroelectric polarization in CIPS plays a critical role in tunable AgNS photodeposition, as evidenced by layer thickness and temperature dependence experiments. We further reveal that AgNS photodeposition process starts from the active site creation, selective nanoparticle nucleation/aggregation, to the continuous film formation. Moreover, AgNS/CIPS heterostructures prepared by photodeposition exhibit excellent resistance switching behavior and good surface enhancement Raman Scattering activity. Our findings provide new insight into the photocatalytic activity of layered ferroelectrics and offer a new material platform for advanced functional device applications in smart memristors and enhanced chemical sensors.

AgInS2-Coated Upconversion Nanoparticle as a Photocatalyst for Near-Infrared Light-Activated Photodynamic Therapy of Cancer Cells

Abstract:The development of high-performance near-infrared (NIR) photocatalysts with long-term stability and the elucidation on the working mechanism along with multifunctional activity toward biomedical applications have not been explored sufficiently. Herein, a novel hybrid material of an upconversion nanoparticle (NaYF4/Yb3+,Er3+) (UCN) coated with a ternary semiconductor (AgInS2, AIS) has been synthesized by a simple and robust two-step solvothermal route for NIR light active photocatalysis. Preparation of oleic acid-capped spherical UC nanoparticles (NPs) (∼25 nm) followed by solvothermal decomposition of two precursor complexes Ag(acda) and In(acda)3 resulted in the formation of well-defined NaYF4/Yb3+,Er3+@AgInS2 core-shell nanoparticles (UCN@AIS NPs) (∼90 nm). It has been found that effective energy transfer occurred from NaYF4/Yb3+,Er3+ to AgInS2 by a nonradiative luminescence resonance energy transfer process. Superior photocatalytic decomposition activity was validated in terms of the degradation of methylene blue dye under the exposure of 980 nm NIR laser light with the presence of a UCN@AIS NP catalyst. The degradation process was mediated primarily owing to the formation of a cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) by the hybrid material under NIR light irradiation, in which UCN performs as a transducer to sensitize AIS and trigger the ROS generation. In vitro cancer cell imaging potentiality of the UCN@AIS NPs was then studied on cervical cancer cells (HeLa cells). The UCN@AIS NPs induced in vitro cervical cancer cell death (photodynamic therapy) with ∼27% efficiency as measured by the MTT assay and thus proved to be a decent candidate for NIR active photocatalysts for biomedical applications.
