Abstract:The process of urbanization and infrastructure construction has resulted in the occupation and loss of high-quality cropland. Complemented cropland with higher altitudes and slopes from either development or reclamation has become an important component of cropland resources and plays a vital role in ensuring food security. However, existing research mainly focuses on the dynamic balance of quantity, quality, productivity, and impact on the environment, and not enough attention is paid to whether the newly added cropland is efficiently used in the long term. Based on a cropping intensity dataset from 2001–2019, this study applied the sliding window and change detection methods to assess the use continuity and efficiency of complemented cropland from the perspective of cropland abandonment and explored the impact of the abandonment on food production. The results showed the following: (1) The total area of complemented cropland in 2002–2019 reached 279,416.4 km2, accounting for 13.1% of total cropland in the base year (2001). (2) 45.1% of the complemented cropland was abandoned at least once during the past 20 years, making only 65.6% of that land efficiently used, and this percentage was higher in the middle plains and downstream of the Yangtze River. (3) Abandonment had significant impact on the food production of complemented cropland—with a trend of increasing and then decreasing—leading to a food production reduction of 24.3% per year on average, which was more severe in the middle plains and downstream of the Yangtze River. Higher slope and a migrated population promoted the abandonment of complemented cropland. Therefore, the government should strengthen the monitoring of long-term utilization of complemented cropland and strategic reserves to maintain stable utilization.
Evaluating Whether Farmland Consolidation Is a Feasible Way to Achieve a Balance of Potential Crop Production in Southeastern Coastal China

Abstract:The requisition-compensation balance of farmland (RCBF) policy proposes that all farmland requisitioned for development must be compensated with new farmland, of which the continued implementation in economically developed counties in China faces great challenges. The extent to which a balance of potential crop production can be achieved merely through farmland consolidation has important theoretical and practical significance. This study proposes measurement procedures to investigate this degree and takes seven counties in southeastern coastal China as examples on which to conduct an empirical study. The results show the following: (1) there is a significant negative correlation between GDP and the index of the balance of potential crop production of each county, that is, the more developed the county, the lower the potential to achieve the balance; (2) with an increase in elevation, the possibility of increasing potential crop production shows an inverted U-shaped curve, with the maximum values occurring at elevations between 50 and 500 m and more attention should be paid to farmland with an elevation of between 50 m and 500 m when implementing farmland consolidation projects; (3) although it is difficult for economically developed counties to strike a balance of potential crop production merely through farmland consolidation, the potential of which to compensate for the loss of potential crop production from requisition is great, reaching more than 40%, which plays an important role in realizing the requisition-compensation balance of potential crop production; and (4) the potential of farmland consolidation to compensate for the loss of potential crop production and the difference of which between counties should be paid adequate attention when implementing RCBF policy adjustment. Therefore, the proposed approach illustrated in this study clearly reveals the relationship between the loss of potential crop production from requisition and the compensation of potential crop production by farmland consolidation, which has important implications for the adjustment of the RCBF policy in China.

Abstract:Cropland abandonment is a widespread land-change phenomenon globally, driven by complex social, economic, and political transformations, with significant implications for the environment and society. However, the inconsistent definitions of cropland abandonment and the bias in the selection of study areas hinder the comparison of identified determinants of cropland abandonment. In this study, we defined cropland abandonment from the perspective of vegetation succession. By employing land-cover change detection with Landsat timeseries images from 1990 to 2021, we analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of cropland abandonment across the cities of Yibin, Huangshi, and Chaohu within the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Furthermore, we utilized the Gradient-Boosting Decision Tree model to identify the primary spatial determinants and their relative importance in each city. Our findings showed significant variations in abandonment rates by 2021. Huangshi exhibited the highest rate of cropland abandonment, leading with 53.81+2.1 %, followed by Yibin with 45.36+2.18 %, and Chaohu with the lowest at 36.94+2.21 %. Interestingly, a consistent spatiotemporal trend, areas with higher abandonment rates tended to be abandoned earlier, emerged in abandonment determinants across cities. Areas with lower bulk density, higher soil clay content, and greater organic carbon contents exhibited higher abandonment rates. However, the most influential determinants varied: the distance from water bodies was the most important in Yibin and Huangshi, while the distance from the forest had a greater impact in Chaohu. This study offers a more nuanced perspective on defining cropland abandonment and can be applied to other regions after some adjustment. Our results provide valuable insights for cropland abandonment management by protecting high-value croplands and setting aside some areas for environmental amenities.

Abstract:Grasping cropland abandonment patterns in China can help protect croplands, thereby ensuring the perpetuation of nationwide food security. However, the pattern of long-term cropland abandonment at the national scale remains limited. Here, we investigate the spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of cropland abandonment across China during 1990-2019 by integrating continuous long-term series of land cover, natural factors, and socioeconomic data. We find that the mean abandoned cropland area is 2.34 x 104 km2 per year. The spatial pattern of cropland and natural factors are prime drivers of cropland abandonment, but there is a substantial variation across agricultural regions. Further analysis suggests that annual food loss due to cropland abandonment is about 7.94 billion kilograms, which could feed 19.85 million people. These findings allow for a better understanding of the spatial heterogeneity and driving forces of cropland abandonment patterns, and inspire to govern global cropland abandonment and formulate relevant policies.
Spatial Differentiation and Environmental Controls of Land Consolidation Effectiveness: A Remote Sensing-Based Study in Sichuan, China

Abstract:The increasing global population is leading to a decline in cropland per person, aggravating food security challenges. The global implementation of land consolidation (LC) has created new farmland and increased productivity. LC is a critical strategy in China for ensuring food security and gaining significant government support. This article investigates the impact of LC on farmland productivity in Sichuan Province in 2020. We utilize time series remote sensing data to analyze LC’s impact on farmland capacity. This study uses Sentinel and Landsat satellite data to calculate CumVI and assesses the LC project’s spatiotemporal evolution. To evaluate LC’s effectiveness, we create indexes for yield level and stability and employ Getis-Ord Gi* to identify spatial differentiation in LC’s impact. GeoDetector and GWR examine the impact of natural factors like elevation, slope, soil organic carbon, and rainfall on the effectiveness of LC. The research results show that: (1) After the implementation of LC, 55.51% of the project areas experienced significant improvements in agricultural productivity; the average increase rate of yield level is 7.74%; and the average increase rate of yield stability is 12.40%. Overall, LC is significant for improving farmland capacity. (2) The effectiveness of LC exhibits spatial differences and correlations in different areas. The main location for high-value agglomeration of yield levels is Nanchong City, while the northern part of Guangyuan City primarily hosts low-value agglomeration areas. (3) Natural conditions influence LC’s effectiveness. In terms of affecting the yield level of LC, the driving factors from high to low are SOC, elevation, slope, and rainfall. In terms of affecting the yield stability of LC, the driving factors, from high to low, are elevation, SOC, slope, and rainfall. LC’s effectiveness is influenced by different natural conditions that have different effects.

Abstract:The abandonment phenomenon is familiar in China. It threatens food security and seriously affects the sustainable development of society, the economy, and the natural environment. However, monitoring and mapping abandoned cropland on a large scale remains a challenge because of its complex land-use change process. According to the World Food and Agriculture Organization, cropland not used for agricultural production for more than 5 years is defined as abandoned cropland. This study uses the Landsat high-precision long-time series product to detect cropland nationwide from 1990 to 2019 by using the sliding window method on Google Earth Engine to profile the spatial distribution, intensity, trend, frequency, and recultivation of abandoned cropland. Between 1992 and 2015, the results illustrate that the total area of abandoned cropland in China was 559,170.26 km2, 18.59 % of the cropland area. Excluding the recultivated cropland area, China's abandoned cropland area amounted to 392,156.24 km2, 13.03 % of the total cropland. Cropland abandonment is mainly distributed in the second terrain gradient in midwestern and southwestern regions such as Inner Mongolia and Gansu. It rarely happens in western and eastern coastal areas. A high abandonment rate area usually has high elevation and slope. The light index is negatively correlated with the abandonment rate in suburban areas. This study is the first to map the spatiotemporal distribution of abandoned cropland in China with high precision at 30 m resolution. It provides an important basis for policies regarding the recultivation of abandoned cropland.
Mapping Cropland Abandonment in Mountainous Areas in China Using the Google Earth Engine Platform

Abstract:Knowledge about the spatial-temporal pattern of cropland abandonment is the premise for the management of abandoned croplands. Traditional mapping approaches of abandoned croplands usually utilize a multi-date classification-based land cover change trajectory. It requires quality training samples for land cover classification at each epoch, which is challenging in regions of smallholder agriculture in the absence of high-resolution imagery. Facing these challenges, a theoretical model is proposed to recognize abandoned croplands based on post-abandonment secondary succession. It applies the continuous change detection and classification (CCDC) temporal segmentation algorithm to Landsat time series (1986~2021) to obtain disjoint segments, representing croplands’ status. The post-abandonment secondary succession showing a greening trend is recognized using NDVI-based harmonic analysis, so as to capture its preceding abandonment. This algorithm is applied to a mountainous area in southwest China, where cropland abandonments are widespread. Validation based on stratified random samples referenced by a vegetation index time series and satellite images shows that the detected abandoned croplands have user accuracy, producer accuracy and an F1 score ranging from 43% to 71%, with variation among abandonment year. The study area has a potential cropland extent of 22,294 km2, within which 9252 km2 of the cropland was abandoned. The three peak years of abandonment were 1994, 2000, and 2011. The algorithm is suitable to be applied to large-scale mapping due to its automatic manner.
The impact of land certification on cropland abandonment: evidence from rural China

Abstract:Purpose This study explores how the land tenure system helps in protecting land quantity during agricultural production by estimating the influence of land certification on cropland abandonment, its mechanisms and its heterogeneous effects among groups at the provincial, community and household levels. Design/methodology/approach To deal with potential homogeneity concerns, the authors investigate the impact of land certification on the area of abandoned croplands using nationally representative panel data from the 2017 and 2019 China Rural Household Panel Survey on 15,000 households across 29 provinces and time-varying difference-in-differences and propensity score matching-difference-in-differences models. Findings Land certification significantly contributes to the protection of land quantity during agricultural production, and it reduces the area of abandoned croplands by at least 4%. This effect is mainly achieved by improving soil fertility, promoting land transfer, increasing the availability of agricultural subsidies and raising agricultural income. However, while land certification benefits farmers in nonmajor grain-producing areas and western regions, in plain, remote and nonpolitically central villages, and farmers who have not undergone land transfer or land adjustment, it is not beneficial for others. Research limitations/implications In the postepidemic era, food security based on the protection of the amount of cultivated land becomes increasingly important. It is realistic and inevitable to rationally use every inch of cultivated land and curb the cropland abandonment by strengthening land tenure system reform, especially in the case of the insecurity of land tenure. Practical implications There are various factors affecting farmers' cropland abandonment, such as poor soil fertility, unavailable land transfer, too little agricultural subsidies and too low agricultural income, but the root cause is the insecurity of land tenure. Empirical evidence from rural China has shown that a clear definition and effective protection of property rights can help curb the cropland abandonment. Enhancing the land protection behavior of farmers through the reform of land certification and promoting the sustainable use of land are what the reform of land tenure system should be. Social implications Cultivated land, as the material carrier and endowment basis of grain production, is of great importance to safeguarding national food security, especially in the postepidemic era. At the present stage, it is still necessary for most developing countries to strengthen the construction of land tenure system, to carry out land certification reform and to issue farmers with clearly defined and legally effective land certificates. Equally important, efforts also should be made to promote the diversified utilization of the achievements of the certification after the completion of land certification reform in China and other developing countries. Originality/value Expropriation and occupation of croplands are essential in protecting land quantity during rapid urbanization, and so is reducing cropland abandonment during agricultural production; therefore, it deserves close attention. In this regard, this study estimates the impact of land certification on the area of abandoned croplands, examines its possible mechanisms and identifies its heterogeneous effects to test the applicability of the property rights theory in the Chinese context and enrich the relevant literature and provide Chinese evidence for other developing countries to strengthen the protection of land quantity, by deepening the reform of the land tenure system under different circumstances.
Cultivability evaluation and conservation strategies of land resources in China

Abstract:Only one third of the world average can be found in the per capita farmland in China. Furthermore, a large number of high-quality cultivated land has been occupied and replaced by low-quality farmland with the continuous development of urbanization in recent years. The unsuitable or uncultivable distribution of farmland in areas（such as beaches and mountains）has posed a serious threat to the national security of farmland. Great challenges have also been put the national food security in the context of emergencies, such as epidemics and disasters. It is a high demand for the high level self-sufficiency in food production under a large population during this time. In this study, a new understanding was offered to protect the farmland system, in order to change the perception from the farmland system to the cultivatable land. The ecological niche model and geographic information system（GIS） were used to measure the scale size and spatial distribution of cultivatable land, current farmland, and construction land. Firstly, the amount of cultivatable land was sufficient with the outstanding difference in spatial distribution. The cultivatable land was sufficient in the east of Chinese Heihe-Tengchongn line, where the area was approximately 2.05 times that of the current farmland. Secondly, there was the uneven quality of current farmland, where the less current farmland was distributed in the highly cultivable areas. There was an outstanding location difference in cultivatable land quality. The cultivatable land showed a hierarchical level in different areas, where the quality gradually decreased from the southeast to the northwest of China. Thirdly, there was a spatial mismatch between the cultivatable land and the current farmland. About 16.83% of the current farmland was in the unsuitable area for cultivation. The current farmland was distributed in the uncultivable areas, where the low quality of farmland led to low production in the essential goal of farmland protection, due to the mismatch between the cultivatable land and current farmland. The proposal of cultivatable land was provided the direction for the transformation of farmland protection. The "grain-land" mismatch rate of farmland also reduced resource consumption and environmental pollution. The cultivatable land grading and zoning protection were carried out to appropriately adjust the layout of current and new farmland, in order to realize the fertile land for grain use and storage. At the same time, the protection of cultivatable land can greatly contribute to the cultivatable capacity of the land,in order to avoid the encroachment and squeezing of the cultivatable land, due to urbanization. The retention of enough land can be expected to fully meet the possible future farming needs. Therefore, sufficient cultivatable land can be provided in time for agricultural production.

Abstract:In recent decades, cropland policies have been recognized as crucial tools for ensuring food security and managing urban growth. However, whether cropland conservation undermines urban land use efficiency (ULUE) in peri-urban areas has not been adequately studied. This study investigated the impact of cropland on ULUE in the peri-urban areas of 36 rapidly urbanizing metropolitan areas in China. Multiple open-source datasets were used, including land use, land cover, three-dimensional building structure, and nighttime light (NTL) data. Urban construction land patterns (infilling, edge, outlying) were categorized to examine the intermediate role of urban form in the correlation between cropland and ULUE. The findings indicated that: (1) high proportion of cropland area within the peri-urban areas significantly undermined ULUE; (2) although the conservation of cropland is conducive to compact urban growth, the infilling expansion pattern that compelled by cropland conservation would not sustain intensive human activity; and (3) reducing the spatial separation between conserved cropland and urban construction land was conducive to the dual objectives of protecting cropland and promoting ULUE. This study contributed to the development of a nuanced understanding of cropland protection policies that balance national food security and urbanization efficiency.
Is Abandoned Cropland Continuously Growing in China? Quantitative Evidence and Enlightenment from Landsat-Derived Annual China Land Cover Dataset

Abstract:Abandoned cropland is a great waste of land resources, which not only affects the stability of food production, but also wastes limited cropland resources. China has large areas of abandoned cropland, and accurately extracting the large-scale abandoned cropland is a prerequisite for the government to implement reclamation policies and estimate the food production potential of abandoned cropland. China has implemented the Grain for Green Project (GGP) since 1980, but most research has not considered its impact on the extraction of abandoned cropland. Therefore, a method was proposed to identify abandoned cropland excluding the regions of GGP, and to analyze the spatio-temporal characteristics and potential of abandoned cropland in China from 1991 to 2018. GGP potential and food production potential of abandoned cropland were discussed. The results showed that 26.47 million hectares of cropland has been abandoned in the past 28 years (including cropland that has been reclaimed). Under the positive influence of the government's food security policy, the abandoned cropland has decreased in recent years, but the total area is still high. The abandonment mainly occurred in the Jiangnan Hills, the Hilly Regions of Fujian and Guangdong Province, the North China Mountains, and Eastern Inner Mongolia. The higher the elevation and the steeper the slope, the higher the abandonment rate. In addition, the urban-rural income gap significantly affected the abandonment rate. This study drew the spatial and temporal distribution map of abandoned cropland in China with a spatial resolution of 30 m considering GGP. It provides an important basis for formulating reclamation and GGP policy.

Abstract:Abstract With the wages for migrant workers increasing dramatically in China since 2003, the size of the agricultural labour forces has been shrinking rapidly. Intensively substituting agricultural machinery for the shrinking farm labour force is hardly possible for croplands in the mountainous regions of China where mechanization is difficult to achieve due to small field size and rough terrain. This has eventually led to cropland abandonment in these regions. Considering the high pressure for food security in China, cropland abandonment in the mountainous regions should not be ignored. By employing a novel method, this study estimates the extent of recently abandoned croplands (period 2000–2010) and the changes that can be expected in the future in China's mountainous areas. The results show that the total extent of abandoned croplands in Chinese mountainous counties during the period 2000 to 2010 is estimated at 147 million mu (1 mu = 666.67 m 2 ); in total, about 28% of croplands in mountainous counties was abandoned, including croplands converted in the Grain for Green Programme. With 3 scenario assumptions, a sizeable extent, 114 to 203 million mu, of croplands may be abandoned from 2010 to 2030 with the rapid decrease and ageing of projected farm labour forces. This could exacerbate the future challenges of maintaining China's food security. A substantial increase in agricultural project investments, including land consolidation and agricultural productive fixed assets, especially microtillage machines, could help mitigate the risk of cropland abandonment. Additionally, land‐use and environmental policymaking should take into account the expanding cropland abandonment in mountainous regions.

Abstract:Abstract Despite the looming land scarcity for agriculture, cropland abandonment is widespread globally. Abandoned cropland can be reused to support food security and climate change mitigation. Here, we investigate the potentials and trade-offs of using global abandoned cropland for recultivation and restoring forests by natural regrowth, with spatially-explicit modelling and scenario analysis. We identify 101 Mha of abandoned cropland between 1992 and 2020, with a capability of concurrently delivering 29 to 363 Peta-calories yr -1 of food production potential and 290 to 1,066 MtCO 2 yr -1 of net climate change mitigation potential, depending on land-use suitability and land allocation strategies. We also show that applying spatial prioritization is key to maximizing the achievable potentials of abandoned cropland and demonstrate other possible approaches to further increase these potentials. Our findings offer timely insights into the potentials of abandoned cropland and can inform sustainable land management to buttress food security and climate goals.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to identify and measure the effect of land consolidation (LC) on the multifunctionality of cropland ecosystems. LC can serve agriculture multifunctionality, but it can also have a huge impact on the individual functions within the sector. We took 2006-2012 as study period, based on an analysis of county scale land consolidation projects (LCP) in the 31 provinces of China, this study found that the wide range of LC implementation has comprehensively influenced the multifunctionality of agriculture. LCP have significantly improved the production function of cropland, driven investment in agriculture, promoted development of the rural agricultural economy, maintained food security and stability in the rural area, and increased crop supply in most provinces. However, it also slightly impaired rural ecological benefits in some provinces. During the study period, land consolidation influenced the agricultural supply function in 14 provinces, covering 43.97% of the LC affected area and producing an increase of 1.25 million ha in cropland; In five provinces it influenced the production function over 31.18% of the LC area, changing the supply function outcome most and the ecological function least, Thus, the widespread implementation of LCP can result in significant impacts on the crop production system. Since the implementation of the "requisition-compensation balance policy", its important role in the conservation of arable land has been widely noted. Multiple studies indicate the effectiveness of the policy by estimating the quantity and quality change of arable land. In addition, the defects and negative externalities of the policy are disputed. The overall goal of this study is to estimate the provincial-level effectiveness of the "requisition-compensation balance policy" in mainland China in two periods (i.e., 2000—2010; 2010—2020) from four perspectives: arable land quantity dynamic balance; arable land productivity balance; farming distance; and sustainability of arable land use. The results showed that, first, the arable land quantity balance was achieved during 2000–2020 from a national perspective. There are still 19–23% of provinces have failed to reach the quantity balance. Second, the decrease in China's total arable land productivity was exacerbated from 9612.1 thousand tons. to 31254.6 thousand ton. The average potential yield balance index was less than 1 for nearly all provinces during 2000–2010 and became even worse in the next decade because of occupying superior arable land while compensating for inferior arable land. The conservation of arable land productivity has become more important than the conservation of quantity. Third, due to the lack of constraints on the farming distance changes in the "requisition-compensation balance policy", most provinces convert arable land around urban and rural areas to built-up land while replenishing land far from residential areas without providing adequate agricultural infrastructure, which leads to an increase in the cost of farming and consequently to an increase in the marginalization of arable land. During 2010–2020, the average farming distance of compensated arable land at the provincial level reached 2–7 times that of occupied arable land. However, the average farming distance of the whole arable land at the provincial level decreased by 3.82–63.88% during the same period. This contradiction is mainly due to increasing marginalization and opportunity costs resulting in arable land with high farming distance (including arable land that was compensated in the past) to be used with low intensity or even abandoned and thus identified as other land use types by remote sensing classification models. This factor outweighed that of "occupy nearby arable land while compensating farther one", resulting in a reduction in the provincial average farming distance. Fourth, the percentage of sustainable compensated arable land in most provinces was lower than 70%. This indicated that the utilization and protection of arable land in these provinces was insufficiently implemented and monitored. Challenges along optimization of the "requisition-compensation balance policy" were discussed from two respects: data, theory and methodology and policy design and implementation. The authors argue that a more comprehensive "requisition-compensation balance policy" should be designed considering not only the quantity and productivity of arable land but also the farming distance, sustainability and ecological protection. A differentiated regulation mechanism of arable land requisition compensation in trans-provincial areas should be formulated. This study can provide guidance for optimizing the implementation of regional arable land protection and can also provide a reference for other countries to protect arable land.

Abstract:Cropland abandonment is one of the most widespread types of land-use change in Southern China. Quickly and accurately monitoring spatial-temporal patterns of cropland abandonment is crucial for food security and a good ecological balance. There are still enormous challenges in the long-term monitoring of abandoned cropland in cloud and rain-prone and cropland-fragmented regions. In this study, we developed an approach to automatically obtain Landsat imagery for two key phenological periods, rather than as a time series, and mapped annual land cover from 1989 to 2021 based on the random forest classifier. We also proposed an algorithm for pixel-based, long-term annual land cover correction based on prior knowledge and natural laws, and generated cropland abandonment maps for Guangdong Province over the past 30 years. This work was implemented in Google Earth Engine. Accuracy assessment of the annual cropland abandonment maps for every five years during study period revealed an overall accuracy of 92–95%, producer (user) accuracy of 90–96% (73–87%), and Kappa coefficients of 0.81–0.88. In recent decades, the cropland abandonment area was relatively stable, at around 50 × 104 ha, while the abandonment rate gradually increased with a decrease in the cultivated area after 2000. The Landsat-based cropland abandonment monitoring method can be implemented in regions such as southern China, and will support food security and strategies for maintaining ecological balance.

Impacts of Cropland Utilization Patterns on the Sustainable Use Efficiency of Cropland Based on the Human–Land Perspective

Abstract:Confronted with China's burgeoning population and finite arable land resources, the enhancement of sustainable arable land efficiency is of paramount importance. This study, grounded in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), introduces a robust framework for assessing sustainable arable land use. Utilizing the Sustainable Utilization of Arable Land (SUA) indicator system, the DGA–Super-SBM model, the Malmquist–Luenberger production index, and the TO–Fisher–OSM algorithm, we evaluated the efficiency of sustainable utilization of arable land (ESUA) in 52 prefecture-level cities within China's major grain-producing regions of the Yellow and Huaihai Seas. We analyzed the cropland utilization patterns from 2010 to 2020, examining the influence of these patterns on sustainable utilization efficiency. Our findings indicate that between 2010 and 2020, the arable land usage in these regions exhibited minimal transformation, primarily shifting towards construction land and conversely from grassland and water systems. Notably, the ESUA of arable land demonstrated an upward trend, characterized by pronounced spatial clustering, enduring high efficiency in the northern regions, and a significant surge in the southern sectors. The declining ESUA (D-ESUA) trend was general but increased in half of the cities. The change in the center of gravity of ESUA correlated with the north–south movement of the proportion of cultivated land area, the turn-in rate, and the turn-out rate, yet moved in the opposite direction to that of cultivated land density and yield per unit area. Variables such as the replanting index, cropland density, yield per unit area, and cropland turn-in rate significantly affected ESUA. These findings offer a scientific basis and decision-making support for optimizing the utilization pattern of arable land and achieving a rational allocation of arable land resources.

Abstract:Cropland abandonment is a widespread land-change process globally, which can stem from the accelerated outmigration of the population from rural to urban areas, socio-economic and political changes, catastrophes, and other trigger events. Clouds limit the utility of optical satellite data to monitor cropland abandonment in highly fragmented mountain agricultural landscapes of tropical and subtropical regions, including the south of China. Taking Nanjing County of China as an example, we developed a novel approach by utilizing multisource satellite (Landsat and Sentinel-2) imagery to map multiple trajectories of cropland abandonment (transitioning from cropland to grassland, shrubs and forest) in subtropical mountainous landscapes. Then, we employed a redundancy analysis (RDA) to identify the spatial association of cropland abandonment considering agricultural productivity, physiography, locational characteristics and economic factors. Results indicate the great suitability of harmonized Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 images to distinguish multiple trajectories of cropland abandonment in subtropical mountainous areas. Our framework of mapping cropland abandonment resulted in good producer's (78.2%) and user's (81.3%) accuracies. The statistical analysis showed 31.85% of croplands cultivated in 2000 were abandoned by 2018, and more than a quarter of townships experienced cropland abandonment with high abandoned rates (>38%). Cropland abandonment mainly occurred in relatively unfavorable areas for agricultural production, for instance with a slope above 6°. Slope and the proximity to the nearest settlement explained 65.4% and 8.1% of the variation of cropland abandonment at the township level, respectively. The developed approaches on both mapping cropland abandonment and modeling determinants can be highly relevant to monitor multiple trajectories of cropland abandonment and ascribe their determinants not only in mountainous China but also elsewhere and thus promote the formulation of land-use policies that aim to steer cropland abandonment.

Abstract:Whether China can achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) largely depends on the ability of main food-producing areas to cope with multiple land use change challenges. Despite the fact that the Yangtze River basin is one of the key regions for China's food security, the spatiotemporal dynamics of cropland abandonment and recultivation remain largely unexplored in this region. The present study assesses the evolution of the agricultural system within the Yangtze River basin between 2000 and 2020 by mapping cropland abandonment and recultivation using MODIS time series and multiple land cover products. The results highlight a widespread cropland abandonment process (i.e., 10.5% of the total study area between 2000 and 2020), predominantly in Western Sichuan, Eastern Yunnan, and Central Jiangxi. Although 70% of abandoned cropland is situated in areas with slopes less than 5°, the highest rates of abandonment are in mountainous regions. However, by 2020, 74% of this abandoned cropland had been recultivated at least once, whereas half of the abandoned croplands got recultivated within three years of their initial abandonment. Hence, as this is one of the first studies that unravels the complex interaction between cropland abandonment and recultivation in a spatiotemporal explicit context, it offers (i) scientists a novel methodological framework to assess agricultural land use issues across large geographical entities, and (ii) policy-makers new insights to support the sustainable transition of the agricultural sector.

Abstract:Analysing China's cropland changes highlights the intertwined dynamics of urbanization, industrialization, and ecological policies, offering insights into cropland efficiency and advancing agricultural modernization. This study analysed China's county-level cropland area and landscape fragmentation from 1990 to 2021 using land use data. The results revealed an uneven cropland distribution in China, which was mainly concentrated in regions such as Northeast China, the North China Plain, the Sichuan Basin, and the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plains, with most cropland occurring north of the Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River boundary. In the past three decades, China's cropland area has decreased by 8.68 million ha. Approximately 72.14% of the counties experienced a decline, and 24 provinces reported a net loss. Notably, there was large-scale land use type replacement in China, which was primarily manifested as the spatial displacement of cropland with forest, grassland, and impervious surfaces. As a result, the net reduction in cropland accounted for only 22.24% of the total cropland decrease. From 1990 to 2021, 52.04% of China's county-level cropland exhibited no significant changes in total area (TA) or patch density (PD), maintaining a stable cropland landscape. A total of 20.70% of the counties had significant TA reductions without PD changes, primarily in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. Counties without TA changes but significant PD declines represented 11.72%, mainly distributed in transitional zones of the second and third steps of China's terrain, the Loess Plateau, the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, and some areas of the Southeast Hills. Counties with significant TA reductions and PD increases accounted for 7.79%, primarily found in the border areas between Henan and Anhui, as well as Jiangsu. Thus, whether cropland loss in China over the past 30 years has led to increased fragmentation has shown clear spatial heterogeneity. This study provides scientific support for guiding cropland utilization to enhance sustainability and resilience in China.
