Abstract:Total 280 non-medical undergraduates (174 males and 106 females) were enrolled in the study from September 2015 to January 2016.Among all participants,132 received comprehensive cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training,including knowledge teaching,video playing and simulation practice (study group),and 148 received knowledge teaching and simulation practice only (control group).Changes of CPR knowledge,skills and willingness were evaluated before and after training,and compared between two groups.The theory scores were increased after the training in both groups (study group: 87.7±5.6 vs.47.9±4.7,P<0.001;control group: 71.6±5.2 vs.48.4±4.9,P<0.001);there was no significantly difference between two groups before the training (P>0.05),however,there was significant difference after the training (P<0.001).The qualified rates of CPR skills were increased after the training in both groups (study group 81.8% vs.26.5%,P<0.001;control group: 68.2% vs.26.4%,P<0.001);there was no significant difference in qualified rates before the training between two groups (P>0.05),however,there was significant difference after the training (P<0.01).The willingness rates of performing CPR were increased after the training in both groups (study group: 64.4% vs.13.6%,P<0.001;control group: 46.6% vs.14.2%,P<0.001);there was no significant difference in willingness level before the training between two groups (P>0.05),however,there was significantly difference after the training (P<0.01).The study shows that comprehensive training can enhance CPR knowledge,skills and willingness for non-medical undergraduates,indicating that it may also be effective for other social groups.

Abstract:Background: Worldwide, bystander CPR rates are low; one effective way to increase these rates is to train schoolchildren; however, the most effective way to train them is currently unknown.Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies, evaluated whether CPR training for schoolchildren, using innovative teaching modalities (nonpractical, self, or peer-training) versus standard instructor-led training, resulted in higher quality CPR, self-confidence and short-term (≤3 months post-training) or long-term (>3 months post-training) retention of CPR skills.Results: From 9793 citations, 96 studies published between 1975 and 2022 (44 RCTs and 52 before/after studies) were included. There were 43,754 students, average age of 11.5 ± 0.9 (range 5.9-17.6) and 49.2% male. Only 13 RCTs compared practical vs. nonpractical training (n = 5), self- vs. instructor-led training (n = 7) or peer- vs. instructor-led training (n = 5). The observed statistically significant differences in mean depth and rate of compressions between children with hands-on practical training and those without were not clinically relevant. Regardless of training modality, compression depth was consistently suboptimal. No differences were observed in CPR skills immediately or ≤ 3 months post-training, between children who were self- or peer-trained vs. instructor-led. Due to lack of data, we were unable to evaluate the impact of these novel training modalities on student self-confidence.Conclusion: Although innovative training modalities are equally effective to instructor-led training when teaching schoolchildren CPR, compression depth was frequently suboptimal. Recommendations on standardized training and evaluation methods are necessary to understand the best ways to train children.

Abstract:Aim: CPR training for schoolchildren to increase bystander CPR-rates is widely applied. HCPs are regarded as the instructor gold standard, but using non-HCP instructors (e.g., peer-tutors, schoolteachers, medical students) challenges that. This systematic review assesses whether cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training for children led by peer-tutors, schoolteachers, or medical students results in different learning outcomes to training by health-care professionals (HCPs). Methods: We searched studies that compared CPR training for schoolchildren (population) delivered by peer-tutors, schoolteachers, or medical students (intervention), with training led by HCPs (comparison), assessing student knowledge, skills, willingness and/or confidence to perform CPR (outcome). We included randomized and non-randomized controlled trials (study design). Medline, Embase, Psychinfo, Cinahl, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, and Eric were searched from inception until December 23rd, 2023 (timeframe). Two independent reviewers performed title, abstract, full text screening, bias assessment, and grading of certainty of evidence. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, and registered the review with PROSPERO. Results: Of 9'092 studies identified, 14 were included. Comparison of intervention groups to HCP-led training showed similar overall results (knowledge, skills, self-confidence). Superior results for HCP training were only reported for 'ventilation volume', while schoolteachers and medical students achieved superior knowledge transfer. A meta-analysis was possible for 'compression depth' between peer-tutors and HCPs showing no significant differences. Certainty of evidence was 'low' to 'very low'. Conclusion: This systematic review of CPR training for school children revealed that peer-tutors, schoolteachers and medical students achieve similar educational outcomes compared to those of HCPs. Non-HCPs training schoolchildren is an appropriate cost-efficient alternative and easy to implement in school curricula.

Abstract:We analyzed access to health services and the utilization of such services by elderly rural residents in Brazil in 2003, comparing the patterns to those of the urban elderly and the equivalent rural pattern in 1998, using data from the National Household Sample Survey. Access barriers were greater in rural as compared to urban areas. Health services utilization was less than in the urban elderly, even for rural elders who reported health problems. There was no difference in hospitalization rates among rural and urban elderly. Analysis of the health services that were used showed that there was limited access to services with intermediate complexity. The results suggest that access barriers increase even further with advancing age. Gender differences in utilization, generally favoring women, are more marked in the rural elderly. Financial barriers are also more evident. The health services supply should be expanded and adapted to the territorial, cultural, and social characteristics of the rural elderly.

Abstract:Out-of-hospital cardiorespiratory arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the Western world. Early assistance with quality Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of a defibrillator may increase the percentage of survival after this process. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of CPR training and the management of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). A descriptive, cross-sectional, observational study was carried out among students in the first year of a Nursing and Physiotherapy degree of the University of León. To achieve this goal, a theoretical-practical educational intervention of four hours’ duration which included training on CPR, AED and Basic Life Support (BLS) was carried out. A total of 112 students were included. The results showed an increase in theoretical knowledge on BLS as well as on CPR and AED, and practical skills in CPR and AED management. A theoretical exposition of fifteen minutes and the practical training of CPR wasenough for the students to acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge, although the participants failed to reach quality criteria in CPR. Only 35.6% of students reached the right depth in compressions. Also, ventilation was not performed properly. Based on the results, we cannot determine that the percentage of overall quality of CPR was appropriate, since 57.6% was obtained in this respect and experts establish a value higher than 70% for quality CPR. There was a clear relationship between sex, weight, height and body max index (BMI), and quality CPR performance, being determinant variables to achieve quality parameters. Currently, Basic Life Support training in most universities is based on training methods similar to those used in the action described. The results obtained suggest implementing other training methods that favour the acquisition of quality CPR skills.

Abstract:It is recommended to implement the teaching of Basic Life Support (BLS) in schools; however, studies on the best training method are limited and have been a priority in recent years. The objective of this study was to analyze the attitudes and practical skills learned during BLS training using a gamified proposal. A comparative study was carried out, consisting of Compulsory Secondary Education students [control group (CG; classical teaching) and experimental group (EG; gamified proposal)]. The instruments used were the CPR and AED action sequence observation sheet, data from the Laerdal Resusci Anne manikin and AED and Attitude Questionnaire towards Basic Life Support and the Use of the Automated External Defibrillator. Sixty-eight students (33 girls) with a mean age of 13.91 ± 0.70 years were recruited. Results were significantly better in the EG (n = 37) [i.e., breathing control (p = 0.037); call to emergency services (p = 0.049); mean compression depth (p = 0.001); self-confidence (p = 0.006); intention to perform BLS and AED (p = 0.002)]; and significantly better in the CG (n = 31) [Total percentage of CPR (p < 0.001); percentage of correct compression (p < 0.001); time to apply effective shock with AED (p < 0.001); demotivation (p = 0.005). We can conclude that the group that was trained with the training method through the gamified proposal presents better intentions and attitudes to act in the event of cardiac arrest than those of the classic method. This training method allows for similar results in terms of CPR and AED skills to classical teaching, so it should be taken into account as a method for teaching BLS to secondary education students.

Abstract:Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one of the most evolving areas of saving actions that improve the survival rates following cardiac arrest and educating high school students can play a dynamic role in case of emergencies in society. Education of school students in CPR is a strategic goal for the improvement of bystander CPR in rural society. If adolescents were trained to perform CPR during school physical education hours, this may be a cost-effective approach to CPR training. This study is conducted to assess the effectiveness of health education in the improvement of knowledge of CPR among school-going adolescents. Aim: To assess the effect of a training program on students’ knowledge of CPR. Objective: (A) To determine the background knowledge of high school students about cardiac arrest and basic life support in adult victims of cardiac arrest. (B) To determine the association between knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and skills with selected demographic variables. Materials and methods: This is a quasi-experimental study conducted among adolescents aged 13–15 years attending schools in rural areas of South India. The study was conducted between Jan 2022 and Jan 2023. 680 students were included in this study. The universal sampling method was used to enumerate the participants to reduce the impact of the dropout rate. The data was collected using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire by interview method. Basic teaching of CPR for the participants included 2 hours of oral teaching using lecture method, question and answer discussion method as well as 2 hours of practical session using demonstration, practice on a manikin, provision of feedback and correction of errors. Results: A total of 680 participants were grouped into three categories according to their knowledge scores: (A) fair, (B) Moderate, and (C) Good scores obtained in pre-training observation and post-training observation. Initially, there were 666 (97.9%) in the fair category, most of them improved after training as seen in the post-training observation results, with 97 (14.3%) persons in the fair (A) category. There was not a single student in the good category of the score before intervention, which increased to 665 (45.6%) in the good category of knowledge. The mean score of pre-training is 2.55, and the post-training score is significantly increased to 9.5. Conclusion: An improvement is observed in knowledge of CPR post-training with planned teaching and demonstration. Hence, this method can be considered a logical solution for improving knowledge about CPR in cases of emergency life-saving skills in a particular group of society.
Effectiveness of theoretical-practical training in basic life support for school canteen monitors from Primary Care

Abstract:Introduction: cardiovascular diseases constitute a public health problem worldwide and among them cardiorespiratory arrest (CPA) stands out. School canteens are spaces with potential risk of witnessing a PCR. Materials and methods: quasi-experimental analytical study of intervention. The participants received training through an interactive virtual platform and a face-to-face clinical simulation session on the Heimlich maneuver, basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of the semiautomatic external defibrillator (SAED). A descriptive analysis of the study population and a comparative statistical analysis between the results obtained in a test before and after the virtual training were carried out. A variable was created by subtracting the score obtained before training from that obtained after it. Clinical simulation was analyzed by direct observation. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05. Statistical analysis with SPSS version 19.0. The principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and the guidelines on good clinical practice were followed. Results: the entire sample was women with a median age of 48.50 years. The median mark of the pre-test was 6.7/10 and the post-test had a constant result of 10/10. The difference between the post-test and the pre-test had a median of 3.3 (p 0.01) and was found in the simulation that the learning was optimal. Conclusions: training in CPR is a strategy with a social impact, related to an improvement in the response to a case of CPA, reducing the morbidity and mortality that this implies.

Abstract:Abstract Background The benefits of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training for schoolchildren are well known, but the appropriate age for introducing training is still being discussed. This is a very important issue, since out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is a major public health concern. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of implemented cardiopulmonary resuscitation training on the knowledge of schoolchildren in the last three grades of Slovenian elementary schools and theirs willingness, attitudes, and intentions toward helping others and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The experience of training instructors was also explored. Methods A mixed methods research design was employed, using a Separate Pre-Post Samples Design and focus groups. Research was conducted in 15 Slovenian public elementary schools offering cardiopulmonary resuscitation training. Focus groups included training instructors and developers. Data was collected with a structured questionnaire from April to June 2018 and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses. The three focus groups were convened in September and October 2018. Content analysis of the discussion transcriptions was conducted. The sample included 764 schoolchildren aged 12.5–14.5 years before cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and 566 schoolchildren after training. Three non-homogeneous focus groups included eight cardiopulmonary resuscitation instructors. Results Significant progress in cardiopulmonary resuscitation knowledge was noted after training implementation, with the greatest progress seen in the youngest age group (mean age 12.5). The greatest increase after training was seen for the variables Attitude toward helping others ( p = 0.001) and Self-confidence ( p = 0.001). Analysis of the focus groups yielded two themes: (a) the effects of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training on schoolchildren, and (b) the systemic responsibility of the school system and professional bodies. Conclusions Significant progress in schoolchildren’s cardiopulmonary resuscitation knowledge after training was established. Early introduction of training is recommended. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation knowledge raises awareness of the responsibility to help others and increases self-confidence to provide bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It can be concluded that early cardiopulmonary resuscitation training for children is crucial. It should be a mandatory part of school curricula in those countries where cardiopulmonary resuscitation is not yet mandatory.

Abstract:En España, la legislación educativa (LOMCE, 2013) incluye la necesidad de formar al alumnado en Primeros Auxilios y la investigación señala la importancia de conocer las técnicas de Reanimación Cardiopulmonar (RCP). En este contexto, con el objetivo de evaluar el conocimiento del profesorado de infantil y primaria (N=361) en RCP se realiza un estudio descriptivo aplicando un cuestionario dividido en dos partes: datos demográficos y preguntas relacionadas con el conocimiento teórico en primeros auxilios. Los resultados referentes a RCP señalan que el profesorado no tiene conocimientos, no existiendo diferencias significativas en relación con la edad, el género, con los estudios realizados ni con el tiempo de trabajo (p>0,05). Sólo existen diferencias significativas si se ha realizado un curso en primeros auxilios o no. En base a los resultados se concluye que es necesario formar en primeros auxilios poniendo especial atención en la reanimación cardiopulmonar tanto al alumnado de los grados de educación infantil y primaria como al profesorado en activo. Abstract. In this context, with the aim of evaluating the knowledge of infant a primary school teacher (N=361) in CPR, a descriptive study is carrying out using questionnaire divided into two parts is applied: demographic data and questions related to theoretical knowledge in first aid. The results indicate that the teachers do not have knowledge in CPR and there are not significant differences with regard to age, gender, education and work experience (p>.05). There is a significant difference between those who have taken a course in first aid and those who have not. Based on the results, it is concluded that it is necessary to train in first aid, paying special attention to cardiopulmonary resuscitation, both for students in infant and primary education grades and for active teachers.
Knotted fields and explicit fibrations for lemniscate knots

Abstract:We give an explicit construction of complex maps whose nodal lines have the form of lemniscate knots. We review the properties of lemniscate knots, defined as closures of braids where all strands follow the same transverse (1, ℓ) Lissajous figure, and are therefore a subfamily of spiral knots generalizing the torus knots. We then prove that such maps exist and are in fact fibrations with appropriate choices of parameters. We describe how this may be useful in physics for creating knotted fields, in quantum mechanics, optics and generalizing to rational maps with application to the Skyrme–Faddeev model. We also prove how this construction extends to maps with weakly isolated singularities.
Teaching Life-Saving Manoeuvres in Primary School

Abstract:Introduction. In the event of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) early intervention provided by a layperson can be life-saving. Teaching first aid in primary school may increase the lifelong ability and motivation of young people to take action in an emergency. Objective. The aim of this article is to report a training experience on BLSD (Basic Life Support and Defibrillation) designed for a group of pupils in an Italian primary school, with assessment of its effectiveness at a distance. Methods. The assessment was carried out using a multiple choice questionnaire on a sample of 130 pupils aged 11-12, 62 trained in BLSD and 68 as a control group. The trained group also performed an emergency simulation to assess their learning of practical skills. Results. Using the t test, significant differences emerged in the questionnaire scores between the case-control group. The results of the skill test were positive, even for the most difficult manoeuvres such as opening airways, assessing breathing, or using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Conclusion. Although there are still some open questions regarding the ability to retain these skills in the medium/long term, the study shows that life-saving manoeuvres can be effectively taught to primary school pupils.

Abstract:Objectives The need for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training dissemination in the community could be resolved by mass school training programmes. However, the availability of instructors remains an unsolved problem. Our purpose was to investigate the effects of three different instructor types: healthcare professionals, schoolteachers and peer students, on CPR skills retention of secondary school students 6 months after training. Design The study was designed as a prospective randomised single-blinded controlled trial. The study ended before reaching the target sample size for the schoolteacher arm. Setting and participants Students from three different secondary schools in Heraklion, Greece, were recruited to attend CPR training. Interventions All participants received a manual and a digital video disc demonstrating the CPR/automated external defibrillator (AED) algorithm, followed by hands-on training. They were randomly assigned to receive training by either healthcare professionals, schoolteachers or peer students, who had previously been trained appropriately. Outcome measures CPR knowledge and skill retention were evaluated immediately (secondary outcome) and 6 months after training (primary outcome), using a knowledge questionnaire, skill checklists and feedback device. Results 408 students (199 girls – two non-binary) were enrolled in the study with a median age of 13 (IQR 12–14) years. A total of 255 students (125 girls) were reassessed at 6 months. Preliminary analysis of the data revealed no statistically significant differences between the three groups regarding factual knowledge immediately after training (p=0.226) and at 6 months (p=0.867). Immediately after training, more students trained by healthcare professionals or teachers performed safe defibrillation (p 0.05) among the groups. Conclusions The type of instructor did not affect the CPR knowledge and skill retention of students 6 months after training. Schoolchildren acting as peer instructors could be an effective alternative to healthcare professionals and schoolteachers, although further studies are needed.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The World Health Organization (WHO) has endorsed school bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training programs. But related researches in China are limited. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess bystander CPR training in school children in China and the impact of neighborhood socio-economic status (SES) on. METHODS:A total of 1,093 students from seven schools in Zhejiang province participated in this study. Theoretical and practical bystander CPR training were conducted in instructor-led classes. Students completed a 10-statement questionnaire before and after training, and then underwent a skills assessment during a simulated basic life support (BLS) scenario. Subgroup analyses were stratified according to neighborhood SES. RESULTS:Before training, most students (72.83%) had a strong desire to learn bystander CPR and share with others. After training, bystander CPR theory was significantly improved (P < .01), and 92.64% students reached an 85-100% performance rate in a simulated BLS scenario. Students from low-SES neighborhoods had less pre-training knowledge of bystander CPR (P < .01). However, their performance was similar with students from higher-SES neighborhoods on the post-training questionnaire and the skills assessment, and better among students aged 13-14 years. CONCLUSION:School children in China have a poor pre-training knowledge of bystander CPR. However, with training, there was a significant improvement in the basic theory and skills of CPR. Bystander CPR training efforts should be targeted to Chinese primary and secondary school children, especially in low-SES neighborhoods.

Abstract:Background: Training schoolchildren in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can increase the number of qualified people in the community, which in turn can improve survival rates of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA). Medical students could be a valuable resource for providing the training. This systematic review aims to determine the outcomes of medical students providing CPR training to schoolchildren, aged 13-18 (who are thought to have the strength for effective chest compression), specifically CPR skills for both and non-technical skills such as communication and leadership for medical students.Methods: A literature search of academic databases was conducted on 5 July 2023 using the following keywords: cardiopulmonary resuscitation, basic life support, medical students and high/middle/secondary school students. For the purpose of this review, "schoolchildren" refer to those aged 13-18. Studies were included where the primary focus was medical students teaching CPR to schoolchildren. The studies were critically appraised using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI) tool and outcomes categorised by Kirkpatrick's Levels.Results: Eleven studies were included, six randomised controlled trials and five cohort studies, with 1670 schoolchildren and 355 medical students as participants. Eight studies examined outcomes targeting schoolchildren, two examined outcomes for medical students and one examined both. Four of the eleven studies used validated outcome measures. Only outcomes at Kirkpatrick Level 1 and 2 were found, and all outcomes for both schoolchildren and medical students were positive. Schoolchildren showed improvements in theoretical and practical elements of CPR post-training, while medical students demonstrated improved professional practice skills such as leadership and mentorship as well as improvements in their own CPR skills post-teaching.Conclusions: Schoolchildren can effectively acquire CPR skills through being trained by medical students, who themselves also benefit from improved CPR and professional practice skills after teaching. Further studies with robust methodology such as multi-site randomised controlled trials, the use of consistent and validated outcome measures, and the measurement of outcomes at higher Kirkpatrick levels to determine the impact on bystander CPR rates and community OHCA survival rates, are needed.
Pay It Forward: High School Video-based Instruction Can Disseminate CPR Knowledge in Priority Neighborhoods

Abstract:Introduction: The implementation of creative new strategies to increase layperson cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation may improve resuscitation in priority populations. As more communities implement laws requiring CPR training in high schools, there is potential for a multiplier effect and reach into priority communities with low bystander-CPR rates. Methods: We investigated the feasibility, knowledge acquisition, and dissemination of a high school-centered, CPR video self-instruction program with a "pay-it-forward" component in a low-income, urban, predominantly Black neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois with historically low bystander-CPR rates. Ninth and tenth graders followed a video self-instruction kit in a classroom setting to learn CPR. As homework, students were required to use the training kit to "pay it forward" and teach CPR to their friends and family. We administered pre- and post-intervention knowledge surveys to measure knowledge acquisition among classroom and "pay-it-forward" participants. Results: Seventy-one classroom participants trained 347 of their friends and family, for an average of 4.9 additional persons trained per kit. Classroom CPR knowledge survey scores increased from 58% to 93% (p < 0.0001). The pay-it-forward cohort saw an increase from 58% to 82% (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: A high school-centered, CPR educational intervention with a "pay-it-forward" component can disseminate CPR knowledge beyond the classroom. Because schools are centrally-organized settings to which all children and their families have access, school-based interventions allow for a broad reach that encompasses all segments of the population and have potential to decrease disparities in bystander CPR provision.
Effects of different cardiopulmonary resuscitation education interventions among university students: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education for the public may improve bystander intention to perform CPR on cardiac arrest patients. Studies have shown that different CPR education intervention methods can improve learning performance, with key indicators including attitude toward to CPR, intention to perform CPR, and degree of CPR knowledge and skills. The present study compared the traditional face-to-face method to hybrid and virtual reality (VR) methods to observe difference in learning performance and length of performance retention. This study adopted randomized controlled trial to compare CPR learning performance between traditional face-to-face, hybrid, and VR methods. Participants from each intervention group completed a pretest and 2 posttests. The measurement tools included an attitude and intention questionnaire, knowledge examination, and skill examination with a RESUSCI ANNE QCPR ® manikin. The performance among all participants in pretest showed no significant difference between the intervention groups, indicating no difference in their background attitude, knowledge, and skill level. Significant differences were observed in the average degree of intention to perform CPR between the hybrid and traditional groups in 1st and 2nd posttest. Compared to the pretest results, the posttests revealed significantly higher attitude toward CPR, intention to perform CPR, knowledge examination results, accuracy of overall chest compression, accuracy of CPR procedure, accuracy of AED usage, accuracy of chest compression rate, and accuracy of chest compression depth. The average time to reattending CPR learning and practice session was 11–12 weeks reported by participants. The hybrid and VR methods to CPR education resulted in the same level of improvement in learning performance as traditional face-to-face teaching. The suggested frequency for renewing CPR knowledge and skills is 12 weeks which may be considered in new strategies aimed at promoting CPR education and exposure to the public.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Today, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training is highly important to save the lives of people in need of CPR by those present at the scene, and it is useful to study new training tools in this field. This study aimed to determine and compare the effect of basic CPR face-to-face and electronic training on the self-efficacy of high school students. METHODS: This randomized controlled field trial study was conducted on second-grade high school students in Tabas, Iran, referring to high schools by an announced call. The samples (n=62) were randomly selected and divided into two groups of e-learning and face-to-face training (n=31 each). Both groups completed the Basic Resuscitation Skills Self-Efficacy Scale at the baseline and 1 week and 2 months after the training intervention. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS software (version 20) using statistical measures of mean and standard deviation and statistical tests of t-test, Chi-square, and repeated measures analysis of variance. FINDINGS: The results showed that both e-learning and face-to-face training methods significantly increased the self-efficacy of high school students in CPR in 1 week and 2 months after training. In addition, a significant difference was observed between the two methods regarding the mean score of basic CPR self-efficacy 1 week after the intervention (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Considering the benefits of e-learning on students' CPR learning, this method should be used seriously for basic CPR self-efficacy training.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to test the feasibility of teaching secondary school students to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) according to National Research Council (NRC)--American Heart Association (AHA) standards. Criterion levels specified by AHA call for cardiac compression at a rate of 60 times a minute with two ventilations interposed after 15 cardiac compressions. Translated into numerical performance per minute, this standard equates to 36 compressions and six ventilations per minute. Students were instructed by their usual teachers who received a special educational program in preparation. Both immediate learning and retention of the students after three months were evaluated using a practical and a written test. Teacher performance was evaluated by means of a practical test and a behavior rating. CPR is a motor task involving both continuous and discrete processes. Results of the study corresponded to analogous studies in the psychomotor literature: practice group students' retention of continuous skills (breaths and compressions) was good (little loss of skill), while retention of discrete motor skills (open the airway, check vital signs) was poor. Fifty-five per cent of the practice group in the initial test and 31 per cent in the retention study were able to perform the skills. Retention figures compare favorably with studies in the area of psychomotor learning. The study suggests that it is possible to train secondary school students to perform the ABC's of CPR if they have an opportunity to practice these skills. The study also suggests that the teacher training is an important factor.

Abstract:Introduction Sudden death resulting from cardiorespiratory arrest carries a high mortality rate and frequently occurs out of hospital. Immediate initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by witnesses, combined with automated external defibrillator (AED) use, has proven to double survival rates. Recognising the challenges of timely emergency services in rural areas, the implementation of basic CPR training programmes can improve survival outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of online CPR-AED training among residents in a rural area of Tarragona, Spain. Methods Quasi-experimental design, comprising two phases. Phase 1 involves assessing the effectiveness of online CPR-AED training in terms of knowledge acquisition. Phase 2 focuses on evaluating participant proficiency in CPR-AED simulation manoeuvres at 1 and 6 months post training. The main variables include the score difference between pre-training and post-training test (phase 1) and the outcomes of the simulated test (pass/fail; phase 2). Continuous variables will be compared using Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney U test, depending on normality. Pearson's 2 test will be applied for categorical variables. A multivariate analysis will be conducted to identify independent factors influencing the main variable. Ethics and dissemination This study adheres to the tenets outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki and of Good Clinical Practice. It operated within the Smartwatch project, approved by the Clinical Research Ethics Committee of the Primary Care Research Institute IDIAP Jordi Gol i Gurina Foundation, code 23/081-P. Data confidentiality aligns with Spanish and European Commission laws for the protection of personal data. The study's findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at scientific meetings. Trial registration number NCT05747495.
