Abstract:A novel capsule system composed of sodium cellulose sulfate (NaCS), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and poly[dimethyl(diallyl)ammonium chloride] (PDMDAAC) was prepared for improving the properties of NaCS/PDMDAAC capsules. The process parameters, such as CMC concentration (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8g/L), NaCS concentration (20, 25, 30, 35 and 40g/L), PDMDAAC concentration (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80g/L), reaction time and temperature were investigated to understand their effects on the diameter, membrane thickness and mechanical strength of capsules. The optimum operation conditions for preparing NaCS–CMC/PDMDAAC capsules were determined as 6–8g/L CMC, 35–40g/L NaCS, 60g/L PDMDAAC and polymerization for 30–40min. Diffusion of substances with low molecular weight into capsules was investigated, and diffusion coefficients were calculated according to the developed model. The yeast of Candida krusei was chosen as representative cell to evaluate the effects of different cell loading on capsule mechanical strength. Meanwhile the encapsulated osmophilic C. krusei cells were cultured in 250mL shaking flasks for 72h to determine the cell leaking properties in short and long term.
Preparation, Characterization, and Stability Assessment of a Nano-Delivery System Loaded with Phosvitin Phosphopeptide-Calcium Chelate

Abstract:Oral digestion reduces calcium bioavailability in peptide-calcium supplements, and the construction of a nano-delivery system can solve this problem and protect peptide-calcium absorption. In this study, the delivery carrier of chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs) was firstly optimized by particle size, polydispersity index, and Zeta potential. Then, the nano-delivery system loaded with phosvitin phosphopeptide-calcium chelate (PPP-Ca NPs) was optimized by particle size and encapsulation efficiency (EE). The results showed that the optimal EE was 87.80% +/- 0.66%, and the particle size was 272.3 +/- 2.4 nm. The structure characterization demonstrated that PPP-Ca NPs was mainly formed by electrostatic interaction, and the nano-delivery system was spherical particles (<100 nm). The results of in vitro digestion demonstrated that PPP-Ca NPs could improve the stability and control release of PPP-Ca. Moreover, PPP-Ca NPs could significantly improve mucoadhesion propensity, prolong residence time in the intestine, and thus enhance calcium bioavailability. Furthermore, PPP-Ca NPs could be stored for at least 90 days. This study demonstrated that this nano-delivery system with high EE of PPP-Ca NPs was stable and could protect peptide-calcium absorption. Therefore, PPP-Ca NPs have the potential to serve as a new oral calcium supplement.
Preparation of cattle bone collagen peptides-calcium chelate with ultrasound method and its structural characterization, stability analysis, and bioactivity on MC3T3-E1 cells

Abstract:This study was designed to prepare cattle bone-derived collagen peptides-calcium chelate by ultrasound method (CP-Ca-US), and its structural characterization, stability, and bioactivity on MC3T3-E1 cells were characterized. Single-factor experiments optimized the preparation conditions: ultrasound power 90 W, ultrasound time 40 min, CaCl2/peptides 1/2, pH 7. Under these conditions, the calcium-chelating ability reached 39.48 μg/mg. The result of Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy indicated that carboxyl oxygen and amino nitrogen atom were chelation sites. Morphological analysis indicated that CP-Ca-US was characterized by porous surface and large particles. Stability analysis demonstrated that CP-Ca-US was stable in the thermal environment and intestinal digestion. CP-Ca-US showed a more stable property in gastric juice than chelate prepared by the hydrothermal method. Cell experiments indicated that CP-Ca-US increased osteoblast proliferation (proliferation rate 153% at a concentration of 300 μg/mL) and altered the cell cycle. Significantly, CP-Ca-US enhanced calcium absorption by interacting with calcium-sensing receptor and promoted the mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells. This study provides the scientific basis for applying the ultrasound method to prepare peptides-calcium chelate, and clarifies the positive role of chelate in bone building.

Abstract:To reduce grievous ecological environment pollution and protein resource waste during mung bean starch production, mung bean peptides-calcium chelate (MBP-Ca) was synthesized as a novel and efficient calcium supplement. Under the optimal conditions (pH = 6, temperature = 45 °C, mass ratio of mung bean peptides (MBP)/CaCl2 = 4:1, MBP concentration = 20 mg/mL, time = 60 min), the obtained MBP-Ca achieved a calcium chelating rate of 86.26%. MBP-Ca, different from MBP, was a new compound rich in glutamic acid (32.74%) and aspartic acid (15.10%). Calcium ions could bind to MBP mainly through carboxyl oxygen, carbonyl oxygen, and amino nitrogen atoms to form MBP-Ca. Calcium ions-induced intra- and intermolecular interactions caused the folding and aggregation of MBP. After the chelation reaction between calcium ions and MBP, the percentage of β-sheet in the secondary structure of MBP increased by 1.90%, the size of the peptides increased by 124.42 nm, and the dense and smooth surface structure of MBP was transformed into fragmented and coarse blocks. Under different temperatures, pH, and gastrointestinal simulated digestion conditions, MBP-Ca exhibited an increased calcium release rate compared with the conventional calcium supplement CaCl2. Overall, MBP-Ca showed promise as an alternative dietary calcium supplement with good calcium absorption and bioavailability.
Fabrication and Characterization of Quercetin Loaded Casein Phosphopeptides−Chitosan Composite Nanoparticles by Ultrasound Treatment: Factor Optimization, Formation Mechanism, Physicochemical Stability and Antioxidant Activity

Abstract:Ultrasound treatment was used to successfully prepare Quercetin (Qu)-loaded Casein phosphopeptides (CPP)/chitosan (CS) nanoparticles. Compared with the control, the ternary nanoparticles with the smallest size (241.27 nm, decreased by 34.32%), improved encapsulation efficiency of Qu (78.55%, increased by 22.12%) when prepared under following conditions: ultrasonic frequency, 20/35/50 kHz; the power density, 80 W/L; the time, 20 min, and the intermittent ratio, 20s/5s. Electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions were the main driving forces for nanoparticles formulation, which were strengthened by ultrasound treatment. The compact, homogeneous and spherical composite nanoparticles obtained by sonication were clearly observed by scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. The environmental stability (NaCl, pH, exposure time, storage time, and simulated gastrointestinal digestion) and antioxidant activity of the ternary nanoparticles were remarkably enhanced after ultrasonic treatment. Furthermore, the ternary nanoparticles prepared by ultrasound exhibited excellent stability in simulated gastrointestinal digestion. The above results indicate that ultrasound not only increases the loading of the nanoparticles on bioactive substances but also improves the environmental stability and antioxidant activity of the formed nanoparticles. Ultrasound-assisted preparation of nanoparticles loaded with bioactive substances could be well used in the functional food and beverage industry.

Abstract:Three different proteinaceous biopolymers, namely, egg white protein (EWP), soy protein isolate (SPI) and corn protein isolate (CPI) were used as protective shell materials to encapsulate micronutrients via an ultrasonic encapsulation technique. It was found that the physicochemical properties of the three protein-based matrices, including surface/total thiol (-SH) content, surface activity and denaturation temperature were the key factors that influenced the shell formation and stability. The EWP and CPI-shelled microcapsules reduced the degradation of the encapsulated vitamins by 20% and 40% after exposure to heating and UV-light irradiation. A double emulsion technique was further developed to co-encapsulate both oil- (vitamin A and D) and water-soluble (vitamin B, C and minerals) micronutrients. In-vitro digestion study showed that the proteinaceous microcapsules enable a sustained release of micronutrients, demonstrating their potential for food fortification applications.
Co-encapsulation of curcumin and quercetin with zein/HP-β-CD conjugates to enhance environmental resistance and antioxidant activity

Abstract:In this study, composite nanoparticles consisting of zein and hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin were prepared using a combined antisolvent co-precipitation/electrostatic interaction method. The effects of calcium ion concentration on the stability of the composite nanoparticles containing both curcumin and quercetin were investigated. Moreover, the stability and bioactivity of the quercetin and curcumin were characterized before and after encapsulation. Fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions were the main driving forces for the formation of the composite nanoparticles. The addition of calcium ions promoted crosslinking of the proteins and affected the stability of the protein-cyclodextrin composite particles through electrostatic screening and binding effects. The addition of calcium ions to the composite particles improved the encapsulation efficiency, antioxidant activity, and stability of the curcumin and quercetin. However, there was an optimum calcium ion concentration (2.0 mM) that provided the best encapsulation and protective effects on the nutraceuticals. The calcium crosslinked composite particles were shown to maintain good stability under different pH and simulated gastrointestinal digestion conditions. These results suggest that zein-cyclodextrin composite nanoparticles may be useful plant-based colloidal delivery systems for hydrophobic bio-active agents.
Glycosylated peptide-calcium chelate: Characterization, calcium absorption promotion and prebiotic effect

Abstract:Finding functional preparations that could improve the bioavailability of calcium is one of the keys to solving calcium deficiency. In this study, glycosylated peptides-calcium chelate with calcium absorption promoting activity, named XOS-CSPHs-Ca-MR, was prepared from Crimson Sapper scales protein hydrolysates (CSPHs) and xylooligosaccharides (XOS) via Maillard reaction. Results showed that amino nitrogen, carboxyl oxygen, and carbonyl oxygen atom were the primary calcium chelating sites. Remarkably, XOS-CSPHs-Ca-MR exhibited good calcium phosphate crystallization inhibitory activity, gastrointestinal stability, and could promote calcium transport efficiency in the Caco-2 cell monolayer. In vitro fermentation results showed that XOS-CSPHs-Ca-MR improved the gut microbiota structure of calcium-deficient mice. Its prebiotic effect was achieved by increasing the number of beneficial bacteria, boosting the production of short-chain fatty acids, and improving the colonization ability of microbiota. Therefore, this study could lay a foundation for the study of glycosylated peptide-calcium chelate as a novel calcium supplement with prebiotic effect.
Synthesis and Characterization of Biodegradable Microcapsules for the Controlled Delivery of Calcium Hydroxide

Abstract:This study aimed to synthesize and characterize biodegradable microcapsules based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and ethylcellulose (EC) for a controlled delivery of calcium hydroxide. Phase separation technique was adopted to synthesize calcium hydroxide-loaded PLA/EC microcapsules. Four PLA/EC blends (4/1, 1/1, 1/4, pure EC) were used as shell materials and the input ratio of calcium hydroxide to shell polymer was 4:1 for all microcapsules. The morphology and composition were studied using SEM-EDS and TEM. Particle size distribution, glass-transition temperature, drug loading, and encapsulation efficiency were characterized. In vitro release of the microcapsules was evaluated using a pH microelectrode and an auto-biochemistry analyzer. SEM images of microcapsules showed uniform spherical structures with smooth surfaces. Core-shell, hetero-structures were confirmed using TEM. The presence of calcium in the microcapsules was verified with EDS. Pure calcium hydroxide was 160 nm in diameter and the particle size of the microcapsules ranged between 500 nm and 4 μm. With an increase of PLA in PLA/EC blend, the size of microcapsules increased accordingly. Encapsulation efficiency of these microcapsules was higher than 57% and drug loading was higher than 80%, which were not significantly different among four microcapsules. Pure calcium hydroxide powder was used as a control and 90% was released within 48 h, while release of calcium hydroxide from microcapsules took between 168 and 456 h, depending on the PLA/EC ratio. Compared with calcium hydroxide powder, the calcium hydroxide-loaded microcapsules showed a sustained and prolonged release, which could be controlled via the regulation of the PLA/EC ratio.

Abstract:Many active ingredients in food products are destroyed by gastric acids and enzymes as they pass through the stomach, thereby reducing the desired effect of the target ingredient. In addition, traditional microcapsule preparation methods usually break up the dispersion by mechanical stirring or oscillation, which generates droplets of uneven size and inconsistent inclusion content, and mechanical external forces may cause denaturation and inactivation of active substances. This study aimed to use microfluidics to generate Oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) droplet structures with good monodispersity and highly tunable properties, and to further prepare microcapsules with high encapsulation rate and targeted intestinal release by taking advantage of the cross-linking properties of alginate that reacts with Ca 2+ under acidic conditions. Finally, the particle size distribution, release effect, encapsulation effect and oxidative stability of the core-shell microcapsules were evaluated. In this study, two types of microcapsules, homogeneous and core-shell microcapsules, were prepared by selecting tea polyphenols and vitamin E as models for hydrophilic and lipophilic bioactive compounds, respectively. Thin shell microcapsules with a shell thickness of about 25 μm were prepared using PDMS chip conditioning. Large microcapsules with a particle size of 230 μm were generated by using capillary glass tube chips, which had an excellent antioxidant property with a retention rate of 88.66 ± 1.25% of VE after 20 days of storage at 4 °C, while all of the VE was oxidized in the bare environment. In addition, in simulated gastric fluid, the release of VE was only about 20%, while in artificial intestinal fluid, the release was close to 100%, so the microcapsules also had intestinal targeting properties.

Glycated Walnut Meal Peptide–Calcium Chelates: Preparation, Characterization, and Stability

Abstract:Finding stable and bioavailable calcium supplements is crucial for addressing calcium deficiency. In this study, glycated peptide–calcium chelates (WMPHs–COS–Ca) were prepared from walnut meal protein hydrolysates (WMPHs) and chitosan oligosaccharides (COSs) through the Maillard reaction, and the structural properties and stability of the WMPHs–COS–Ca were characterized. The results showed that WMPHs and COSs exhibited high binding affinities, with a glycation degree of 64.82%. After glycation, Asp, Lys, and Arg decreased by 2.07%, 0.46%, and 1.06%, respectively, which indicated that these three amino acids are involved in the Maillard reaction. In addition, compared with the WMPHs, the emulsifying ability and emulsion stability of the WMPHs–COS increased by 10.16 mg2/g and 52.73 min, respectively, suggesting that WMPHs–COS have better processing characteristics. After chelation with calcium ions, the calcium chelation rate of peptides with molecular weights less than 1 kDa was the highest (64.88%), and the optimized preparation conditions were 5:1 w/w for WMPH–COS/CaCl2s, with a temperature of 50 °C, a chelation time of 50 min, and a pH of 7.0. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the "bridging role" of WMPHs-COS changed to a loose structure. UV–vis spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry results indicated that the amino nitrogen atoms, carboxyl oxygen atoms, and carbon oxygen atoms in WMPHs-COS chelated with calcium ions, forming WMPHs-COS-Ca. Moreover, WMPHs-COS-Ca was relatively stable at high temperatures and under acidic and alkaline environmental and digestion conditions in the gastrointestinal tract, indicating that WMPHs–COS–Ca have a greater degree of bioavailability.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, walnut meal was used to prepare walnut protein. Papain was used to hydrolyze walnut protein to obtain active protein peptides. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) were used to study the chelating ability of walnut protein peptides and Ca 2+ and complete structural characterization. A Caco-2 monolayer model and a rat calcium deficiency model were established to study the calcium absorption capacity and increase bone mineral density(BMD) of walnut protein peptide chelated calcium. The results showed that the appearance and internal structure of walnut peptides had changed after chelated with calcium. Infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated that walnut peptides may participate in the coordination of Ca 2+ to form calcium chelating peptides through groups such as -COOH, -OH, and -NH 2 . Caco-2 monolayer model experiments show that walnut peptides-Ca can promote the absorption and transport of calcium by regulating the TRPV6 signaling pathway. Calcium deficient rat model experiments show that the combination of walnut peptides and calcium can effectively increase BMD and improve bone formation, thereby preventing calcium deficiency. Walnut protein peptide chelated calcium could be a potential new product for calcium supplements.
Enhancement of Calcium Chelating Activity in Peptides from Sea Cucumber Ovum through Phosphorylation Modification

Abstract:Recently, phosphorylation has been applied to peptides to enhance their physiological activity, taking advantage of its modification benefits and the extensive study of functional peptides. In this study, water-soluble peptides (WSPs) of sea cucumber ovum were phosphorylated in order to improve the latter's calcium binding capacity and calcium absorption. Enzymatic hydrolysis methods were screened via ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV–Vis), the fluorescence spectrum, and calcium chelating ability. Phosphorylated water-soluble peptides (P-WSPs) were characterized via high-performance liquid chromatography, the circular dichroism spectrum, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–Vis spectroscopy, surface hydrophobicity, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The phosphorus content, calcium chelation rate and absorption rate were investigated. The results demonstrated that phosphorylation enhanced the calcium chelating capacity of WSPs, with the highest capacity reaching 0.96 mmol/L. Phosphate ions caused esterification events, and the carboxyl, amino, and phosphate groups of WSPs and P-WSPs interacted with calcium ions to form these bonds. Calcium-chelated phosphorylated water-soluble peptides (P-WSPs-Ca) demonstrated outstanding stability (calcium retention rates > 80%) in gastrointestinal processes. Our study indicates that these chelates have significant potential to develop into calcium supplements with superior efficacy, bioactivity, and stability.

Abstract:Casein phosphopeptides (CPPs) are good at calcium-binding and intestinal calcium absorption, but there are few studies on the osteogenic activity of CPPs. In this study, the preparation of casein phosphopeptide calcium chelate (CPP-Ca) was optimized on the basis of previous studies, and its peptide-calcium chelating activity was characterized. Subsequently, the effects of CPP-Ca on the proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells were studied, and the differentiation mechanism of CPP-Ca on MC3T3-E1 cells was further elucidated by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). The results showed that the calcium chelation rate of CPPs was 23.37%, and the calcium content of CPP-Ca reached 2.64 × 10 5 mg/kg. The test results of Ultraviolet–Visible absorption spectroscopy (UV) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that carboxyl oxygen and amino nitrogen atoms of CPPs might be chelated with calcium during the chelation. Compared with the control group, the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells treated with 250 μg/mL of CPP-Ca increased by 21.65%, 26.43%, and 28.43% at 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively, and the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and mineralized calcium nodules of MC3T3-E1 cells were notably increased by 55% and 72%. RNA-seq results showed that 321 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found in MC3T3-E1 cells treated with CPP-Ca, including 121 upregulated and 200 downregulated genes. Gene ontology (GO) revealed that the DEGs mainly played important roles in the regulation of cellular components. The enrichment of the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes Database (KEGG) pathway indicated that the AMPK, PI3K-Akt, MAPK, and Wnt signaling pathways were involved in the differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. The results of a quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) showed that compared with the blank control group, the mRNA expressions of Apolipoprotein D (APOD), Osteoglycin (OGN), and Insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) were significantly increased by 2.6, 2.0 and 3.0 times, respectively, while the mRNA levels of NOTUM, WIF1, and LRP4 notably decreased to 2.3, 2.1, and 4.2 times, respectively, which were consistent both in GO functional and KEGG enrichment pathway analysis. This study provided a theoretical basis for CPP-Ca as a nutritional additive in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.

Abstract:Recently, owing to the good calcium bioavailability, peptide-calcium chelates made of various foods have been emerging. Hericium erinaceus, an edible fungus, is rich in proteins with a high proportion of calcium-binding amino acids. Thus, mushrooms serve as a good source to prepare peptide-calcium chelates. Herein, the conditions for hydrolyzing Hericium erinaceus peptides (HP) with a good calcium-binding rate (CBR) were investigated, followed by the optimization of HP-calcium chelate (HP-Ca) preparation. Furthermore, the structure of the new chelates was characterized along with the evaluation of gastrointestinal stability and calcium absorption. Papain and a hydrolysis time of 2 h were selected for preparing Hericium erinaceus peptides, and the conditions (pH 8.5, temperature 55°C, time 40 min, and mass ratio of peptide/CaCl2 4:1) were optimal to prepare HP-Ca. Under this condition, the chelates contained 6.79 ± 0.13% of calcium. The morphology and energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS) analysis showed that HP-Ca was loose and porous, with an obvious calcium element signal. The ultraviolet-visible (UV) absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis indicated that calcium possibly chelates to HP via interaction with free -COO- from acidic amino acids and C = O from amide. HP-Ca displayed good stability against stimulated gastrointestinal digestion. Moreover, HP-Ca significantly improved the calcium absorption by Caco-2 epithelial cells. Thus, HP-Ca is a promising Ca supplement with high calcium bioavailability.

Abstract:Objective: Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD)/menthyl acetate (MA) microcapsules were developed to overcome the volatile and unstable defects of MA and improve the ease of use and storage. Methods: MA microcapsules were prepared via spray drying using HP-β-CD as the wall material. The embedding rate of MA microcapsules was determined through gas chromatography. The embedding characteristics were studied using phase solubility and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The stability was characterized via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the release and retention rates of MA microcapsules at different temperatures. Results: The embedding rate of HP-β-CD /MA microcapsules was 96.3%. The Gibbs free energy change, enthalpy change and entropy change of the embedding reaction between HP-β-CD and MA were all less than zero, indicating that the embedding process was a spontaneous exothermic reaction. NMR spectra showed that MA entered the cavity of HP-β-CD through the large opening end and interacted with the inner wall of the small opening end. DSC and the release and retention rates of MA microcapsules at different temperatures showed that the stability of MA was significantly enhanced after being embedded in HP-β-CD. Conclusion: The HP-β-CD/MA microcapsules are able to significantly improve the stability of MA and reduce the volatilization of MA.

Preparation and Characterization of Gliadin-Based Core-Shell Microcapsules by Three Antisolvent Approaches

Abstract:Gliadin, a versatile wheat-derived protein, has great potential in the creation of nanostructured delivery systems for encapsulating various hydrophobic bioactive substances. Despite gliadin's well-established potential in creating nanostructured delivery systems for hydrophobic substances, its utilization for encapsulating hydrophilic compounds remains a relatively unexplored domain. This study investigated the feasibility of preparing gliadin-based core-shell microcapsules using different antisolvent methods and assessed their controlled release capabilities for hydrophilic compounds. It employed three commonly used food polysaccharides, alginate, kappa-carrageenan, and agar, as hydrophilic microbeads and selected thiamine and ethyl maltol as model compounds. The microcapsules were constructed by two steps: 1) The microbeads were prepared by a water-in-oil emulsion template under different gelling conditions; 2) The microbeads were dispersed into aqueous ethanol/urea/acetic acid gliadin solutions, during which the slow migration of water from inside the microbeads to the outer gliadin solution decreased the solubility of gliadin and promoted the deposition of gliadin onto the surface of the microbeads, finally leading to the formation of the core-shell structure. The resulting core-shell microcapsules exhibited adjustable particle sizes from 80.0 to 850.0 mu m in diameter and shell thickness ranging from 8.0 to 30.0 mu m. Moreover, the microcapsules exhibited controlled release behavior for hydrophilic compounds, with only 20.0% of thiamine being released after 90 min, and this release rate can be finely tuned by controlling the shell thickness. These gliadin-based core-shell microcapsules are considered as promising carriers for the controlled delivery of hydrophilic compounds.
Structure, stability, and mechanism of dextran-CPP-Ca2+ conjugates: A novel high-efficiency calcium ion delivery system

Abstract:Calcium has limited bioavailability because of the formation of calcium phosphate deposits in the gastrointestinal tract. In this study, we prepared a dextran-casein phosphopeptide (CPP)-Ca2+ delivery system and evaluated for Ca2+ binding mechanism, structure, stability, and sustained release of Ca2+ and assessed inhibition of calcium phosphate precipitation. The results revealed that Ca2+ binds to dextran-CPP through the phosphate, carboxyl, and amino groups and forms crystal clusters. Furthermore, compared with single polymer CPP-Ca2+ conjugates, copolymer dextran-CPP-Ca2+ conjugates exhibited improved stability at various conditions (pH, temperature, and coexisting food), efficiently reduced the calcium phosphate precipitation, and improved sustained-release of Ca2+. Collectively, dextran-CPP-Ca2+ conjugates can be an efficient Ca2+ delivery system.

Abstract:The life cycles of VLDLs and most LDLs occur within plasma. By contrast, the role of HDLs in cholesterol transport from cells requires that they readily gain access to and function within interstitial fluid. Studies of lymph derived from skin, connective tissue, and adipose tissue have demonstrated that particles as large as HDLs require transport through lymphatics to return to the bloodstream during reverse cholesterol transport. Targeting HDL for therapeutic purposes will require understanding its biology in the extravascular compartment, within the interstitium and lymph, in health and disease, and we herein review the processes that mediate the transport of HDLs and chylomicrons through the lymphatic vasculature.
