Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA), identified as an endocrine disruptor, is an industrially important chemical that is used as a raw material in the manufacture of many products such as engineering plastics (e.g., epoxy resins/polycarbonate plastics), food cans (i.e., lacquer coatings), and dental composites/sealants. The demand and production capacity of BPA in China have grown rapidly. This trend will lead to much more BPA contamination in the environmental media and in the general population in China. This paper reviews the current literature concerning the pollution status of BPA in China (the mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan) and its potential impact on human health. Due to potential human health risks from long-term exposure to BPA, body burden of the contaminant should be monitored.

Abstract:A significant and pressing issue revolves around the potential human exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which pose a substantial risk primarily through contaminated beverages. However, a comprehensive review for comparison of the migration rates of EDCs into these matrixes is currently lacking. This study reviews the beverages contamination with EDCs, including phthalates (PAEs), bisphenol A (BPA), hormone-like compounds, elements, and other organic EDCs. Also, the EDCs migration into milk and other dairy products, coffee, tea, and cold beverages related to their release from contact materials, preparation components, and storage conditions are briefly summarized. The data illustrates that besides the contamination of raw materials, the presence of EDCs associated with the type of food contact materials (FCMs)and their migration rate is increased with acidity, temperature, and storage time. The highest concentration of PAEs was detected from plastic and synthetic polymer films, while BPA strongly leaches from epoxy resins and canned metal. Furthermore, the presence of elements with endocrine disrupting characteristics was confirmed in cold beverages, soft drinks, hot drink and milk. Moreover, hormone-like compounds have been found to be released from coffee preparation components. Despite the few data about the migration rate of other EDCs including UV-stabilizers, surfactants, and antibacterial compounds into beverages, their presence was reported into milk, coffee, and different beverages, especially in packed samples. Studies on the EDCs leaching have primarily focused on PAEs and BPA, while other compounds require further investigation. Regardless, the possible risk that EDCs pose to humans through beverage consumption cannot be overlooked.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We have reconstituted concerted human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) integration in vitro with specially designed mini-donor HIV-1 DNA, a supercoiled plasmid acceptor, purified bacterium-derived HIV-1 integrase (IN), and host HMG protein family members. This system is comparable to one previously described for avian sarcoma virus (ASV) (A. Aiyar et al., J. Virol. 70:3571–3580, 1996) that was stimulated by the presence of HMG-1. Sequence analyses of individual HIV-1 integrants showed loss of 2 bp from the ends of the donor DNA and almost exclusive 5-bp duplications of the acceptor DNA at the site of integration. All of the integrants sequenced were inserted into different sites in the acceptor. These are the features associated with integration of viral DNA in vivo. We have used the ASV and HIV-1 reconstituted systems to compare the mechanism of concerted DNA integration and examine the role of different HMG proteins in the reaction. Of the three HMG proteins examined, HMG-1, HMG-2, and HMG-I(Y), the products formed in the presence of HMG-I(Y) for both systems most closely match those observed in vivo. Further analysis of HMG-I(Y) mutants demonstrates that the stimulation of integration requires an HMG-I(Y) domain involved in DNA binding. While complexes containing HMG-I(Y), ASV IN, and donor DNA can be detected in gel shift experiments, coprecipitation experiments failed to demonstrate stable interactions between HMG-I(Y) and ASV IN or between HMG-I(Y) and HIV-1 IN.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA), a known endocrine disruptor, is commonly used in food containers and packaging. Recently, alternatives such as bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol B (BPB), and bisphenol E (BPE) have been introduced to replace BPA. However, these substitutes have been reported to exhibit toxicity levels similar to BPA. In this study, we developed and validated a method for the analysis of trace bisphenols (BPA, BPAF, BPB, and BPE) in food using immunoaffinity column (IAC) clean-up. The method demonstrated satisfactory accuracy and precision. We applied this validated method to analyze 56 carbonated beverage samples and 30 canned tuna samples. In the carbonated beverages, average concentrations of BPA and BPAF were 0.4 and 0.2 μg kg-1, respectively. In canned tuna, BPA and BPAF were found at average concentrations of 22.2 and 0.7 μg kg-1, respectively, while BPB and BPE were not detected in any samples. Estimated exposure levels ranged from 0.13 to 0.18 ng kg bw-1 day-1 in the general population and from 205.2 to 232.0 ng kg bw-1 day-1 among consumers. The commercial IAC-based analytical method used in this study can contribute to the safety management of BPA, BPAF, BPB, and BPE.
Dibutyl Phthalate and Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate Contents in Plastic Packaged Beverages and Potential Exposure Risk to College Students

Abstract:[Objective] To estimate the exposure levels to dibutyl phthalate(DBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate(DEHP) from plastic packaged beverages among college students.[Methods]The chronic daily intake and margin of safety of DBP and DEHP were estimated by the gas-chromatography-determined concentrations of DBP and DEHP in 114 brands of plastic packaged beverages,and the drinking patterns among 196 college students were collected via an online questionnaire using convenience sampling strategy.Monte Carlo models were applied to simulate the daily exposures to DBP and DEHP in target students and related sensitive analyses were also performed.[Results]The daily intakes of plastic packaged beverages varied,but the plastic packaged drinking water accounted for the largest proportion both in males and females.The contents of DBP and DEHP also varied with beverage categories,but coffee,milk,and juice beverages showed relatively higher contents.The chronic daily intakes of DBP and DEHP were less than corresponding tolerable daily intakes,and the margins of safety were both less than 1.According to the results of Monte Carlo simulation,99.90% of the students interviewed were within the safe range of DBP exposure through plastic packaged beverages,and the rest 0.10% were at potential risks of reproductive and developmental toxicities.The probabilities of reproductive and developmental toxicity risks were 0.02% for male students and 0.09% for female students.No health risks should be concerned at the exposure levels of DEHP in sampled beverages.[Conclusion]The intake levels of DBP via plastic packaged beverages may pose potential risks of reproductive and developmental toxicities to college students;however,that of DEHP is within the safe range.

Abstract:Plastic packaging materials (PPMs) protect food from contamination, maintain quality, and ease transportation and distribution. Additives included during the manufacturing and processing of PPMs improve flexibility, durability, barrier properties, and sometimes aid the processing itself. During processing, these additives, even the monomers used to produce the plastics, can produce side products or breakdown products as a result of degradation and various chemical reactions. These starting substances and reaction products include 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (bisphenol A), phthalates/phthalic acid esters, alkylphenols, and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate, which are considered endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that may interfere with the human endocrine system and produce adverse reproductive, neurological, developmental, and immune effects. When in contact with food, EDCs can migrate into food if conditions are appropriate, thereby possibly jeopardizing food safety. Chemical risk assessment and regulatory control were developed to reduce human exposure to harmful migrated EDCs. This article gives an overview of the migration of EDCs from PPMs and control measures to reduce the risk of adverse impacts on human health.

Abstract:This study investigated the release of a known endocrine disruptor—bisphenol A (BPA), in drinking water and carbonated drinks stored in polycarbonate bottles and exposed to sunlight with a view of assessing the health risk involved in their consumption. BPA in the samples was extracted using solid-phase extraction method and determined with high performance liquid chromatography equipped with ultra-violet detector. Results showed that there were significant increase (p < 0.05) in BPA concentration of bottled water and carbonated drink exposed at 1, 3, 7 and 21 days. Also, there were enrichment of BPA levels ranging 31–868% in the bottled water and 17–920% carbonated drinks from 1 to 60 days when compared with the control. However, BPA migrating rate decreases with increase in exposure duration and later remains fairly constant as exposure duration progresses. The chronic daily intake of BPA in carbonated drinks and bottled water were low. The health risk index of BPA in polycarbonate bottled carbonated drinks and water was less than one in both adult and child and thus, there may be no probable adverse health effect on consumers of such products. However, caution should be taken as BPA is also released from other food packaging materials.

Abstract:Phthalates are known as endocrine disruptors and are common in plastic polymers, varnishes, and printing inks. However, they most often enter the human body through food. Plastic materials that hold food contain different chemicals, and phthalates are one of them. Phthalates can also be found in microplastics since microplastic particles serve as a vector for different chemicals that can be slowly released into food and beverages. The aim of this preliminary study was to determine the concentration and types of phthalates (dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di-n-octyl-phthalate) in beer packaged in aluminum cans, PET, and glass bottles. Ten aluminum-canned beers, sixteen PET-packaged, and eighteen glass-bottled beers were bought at a local food store and subjected to GC–MS analysis to quantify and qualify phthalates. The results indicate that PET-packaged beers can contain significant amounts of phthalates; in sample P10, the total sum of phthalates reached 219.82 μg/L. Especially high concentrations of dibutyl phthalate were found in all samples, but the highest concentration was detected in sample P13 at 92.17 μg/L. However, canned beers showed even higher levels of certain phthalates, such as bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, which amounted to 326.81 μg/L in sample C1. In short, phthalates pose a serious health-concerning problem and should be regarded as such.

Abstract:In this paper we present a non-contact droplet sensor that allows for the detection of free flying liquid droplets with diameters in the range of 200-400 mum. The working principle is based on capacitive detection. The detector was fabricated cost-effectively in standard PCB-technology (printed circuit board) and characterized by experiments. Due to its small dimensions (18 times 56 times 1.6 mm) it can easily be placed into the flight-path of the liquid droplet when the distance between the dispenser and the target is at least 3 mm. The proposed sensor is able to detect any irregularity such as velocity, shape or volume variations in the droplet dispensing process by comparing the actual sensor signal with an average liquid specific "fingerprint". Therefore it is especially suited for online process monitoring in its present form.

Abstract:An 80-year-old woman was transferred to our hospital with sudden onset of chest pain. Electorocardiogram (ECG) showed ST-segment elevation of VI-V3 and aV(L) leads suggestive of acute coronary syndrome. On emergent coronary angiography, left main trunk (LMT) was externally compressed only at diastolic phase, showing acute type A aortic dissection involving the left coronary artery. A bare metal stent was promptly implanted to LMT to restore coronary blood flow because of her hemodynamic instability. Soon after this procedure, ischemic changes disappeared on ECG and she was transferred to the operating room in stable hemodynamic condition without chest discomfort. Emergent graft replacement of ascending aorta and proximal portion of transverse arch was successfully performed. As the bare metal stent had been properly implanted at the LMT and weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass was uneventful regardless of decreased left ventricular wall motion of anteroseptal area, coronary artery bypass grafting was not performed. A "bridge to surgery" use of coronary stenting was very effective as a life saving procedure for the patients with acute aortic dissection involving the left coronary artery.
Validation of SMURF Estimation of Shear Modulus in Hydrogels

Abstract:A validation study of the Spatially Modulated Ultrasound Radiation Force (SMURF) method for shear modulus estimation is presented. SMURF estimates of uniform gelatin and Zerdine™ phantoms covering a modulus range of 2 to 18 kPa are compared with results obtained by unconfined mechanical compression and sonoelastography. The results show agreement within the measurement uncertainties over the range indicated for all three methods. Repeatability and variation on the order of 5% of the phantom modulus are found for observations made at a single point within the phantom. Averaging of modulus estimates from several adjacent scan lines further decreases the variation. By using multiple radiation force peaks to induce a shear wave of known wavelength and measure the frequency of the wave, SMURF obtains modulus estimates from tracking data acquired along a single A-line. This is significant, as speckle can bias the measured phase of the shear wave. SMURF is shown to be insensitive to a constant phase error in the shear wave measurement. This results in greatly reduced correlated noise in the modulus estimates, in contrast with methods which track at multiple locations and do not cancel phase errors.

Abstract:A 38-year-old homosexual man ~th ~IDS presented 18 months after starting thalidomide 1~mg at night. Initially he had noted numbness In t~e balls of his feet. This feeling spread over hIS feet and to the level of his mid-shin over the next 2 months. He had no pain, paraesthesiae or ~eak ness. He had been found to be HIV seroposinve 3 years before when he had Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. He had an episode of cerebral toxoplasmosis a month before presentation. He had also been on zidovudine 100mg four times a day for 18 months, pyrimethamine 25 mg da~ly, sulfadoxine 500 mg daily, phenytoin 300 ~g. dally, ketoconazole 100mg twice a day and folinic acid 5 mg daily, all for one month. Examination revealed no abnormalities in the cranial nerves, full power and intact reflexes. Abstract:Abstract Background Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) are endocrine disrupting chemicals used in consumer products, building materials, and food processing and packaging materials. They are associated with adverse health outcomes, especially when exposure occurs during heightened windows of susceptibility. Objective We evaluated the relationship between housing and dietary characteristics and the concentration of several high-molecular-weight (HMW) phthalate metabolites and BPA in a cohort of Latina adolescents. Methods We collected information on recent food consumption and housing characteristics and quantified the concentration of HMW phthalate and BPA metabolites in urine collected at two different time points. We used generalized estimating equations (GEE) to assess predictors of each metabolite. Results No significant associations were observed between housing and dietary characteristics and metabolites of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) or BPA. In contrast, higher urinary monobenzyl phthalate (MBzP) concentration was associated with living in a home with vinyl or linoleum flooring (66.7% change, p -value <0.01), while higher urinary mono(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate (MCPP) concentration was associated with recent consumption of coffee (47.2% change, p -value <0.01), and fast food (30.3% change, p -value <0.05). Significance These findings may be useful in targeting interventions that reduce phthalate uptake in young adults.

Abstract:Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is inevitable, and growing scientific evidence indicates that even very low doses can negatively impact human health, particularly during pregnancy and the neonatal period. As part of the European project LIFE18 ENV/IT/00460, this study aims to identify the presence of EDCs in 20 infant formulas (both powdered and liquid) and the release from baby bottles and teats. Particularly, sensitization of young people and future parents towards the potential harmful effects of EDCs could significantly help to reduce exposure. Seven different UPLC-MS/MS methodologies and one ICP-AES were set up to quantify already assessed and suspected EDCs among 85 different chemicals (bisphenols, parabens, PAHs, phthalates, pesticides, herbicides and their main metabolites, PFAS, and metals). Results showed that in 2 out of 14 baby bottles, only anthracene and phenanthrene of the group of PAHs were released (10.68–10.81 ng/mL). Phthalates such as mono-ethyl phthalate (MEP) were found in 9 of 14 samples (0.054–0.140 ng/mL), while mono(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MeOHP) appeared in 2 samples (0.870–0.930 ng/mL). In accordance with current EU regulations, other chemicals were not detected in baby bottles and teats. However, bisphenols, parabens, PAHs, phthalates, PFAS, and metals were detected in infant formula, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and public health interventions.

Abstract:Introduction. The chemical safety of packaged drinking water is influenced by many factors, including the quality of packaging materials. The chemical components included in the packaging can migrate into drinking water and have a negative impact on human health. The most common types of packaging for drinking water are polyethylene terephthalate (PET, PET) and polycarbonate (PC) bottles. In the production of polymers, to soften and increase the flexibility of the finished product, special substances are added to the material - plasticisers, including dialkyl or alkyl aryl esters of orthophthalic acid (phthalates), among which di (2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), which has toxic properties. The purpose of this study is to analyse various samples of plastic containers in contact with drinking water for the presence of DEHP in polymers and to study the emission of DEHP from polymer packaging into a model environment. Materials and methods. Research has been carried out on 11 samples of containers for drinking water of domestic production, of which nine samples were represented by PET bottles of various sizes and two samples of containers from PC with a volume of 19.0 litres. There was determined the content of DEHP in the container material and the level of migration of DEHP into the aqueous model environment. Sanitary and hygienic studies were carried out based on the Chemical Analytical Center “Arbitrage” of the DI. Mendeleev All-Russian Scientific Research Institute using gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC-MS). GSO 11366-2019 for the composition of a solution of orthophthalic acid esters in methanol was used as a standard sample for the calibration characteristics; a deuterated analogue of the analyte, DEHP-D4, was chosen as an internal standard. Results. In all studied samples of packaging materials, the residual content of DEHP was in the range of 1.7-4.2 mg/kg of polymer; the levels of DEHP migration into aquatic model media were determined at T = 20 °C and T = 40 °C in the range of (8.6-71.0) μg/dm3. Conclusion. One of the sources of contamination of packaged drinking water with DEHP is PET and PC containers. The results obtained indicate the need to include DEHP in the list of monitored sanitary and hygienic safety indicators in the technical regulations of the EAEU TR 044/2017 and TR CU 005/2011 and to consider the issue of restrictions on its use in the production of food packaging. Limitations of the study. As part of this work, samples of bottles from six domestic container manufacturers were analysed. To study the migration of the target component, a model medium was used - distilled water, which does not imitate the mineral composition of drinking water and has certain pH and electrical conductivity values. Studies of the level of DEHP migration were carried out at an ambient temperature of 20 °C and 40 °C and an exposure time of 30 days. The measurement range of DEHP in polymers and the model medium in this study was (0.1-5) μg/sample. The expanded uncertainty of the results of measurements of the DEHP content in the entire measurement range did not exceed 20%.
