Abstract:Abstract In this study, super-amphiphobic nano-silica nanoparticles (SA-NPs) were used to enhance the shale stabilization performance of water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs) by altering the surface wettability, preventing the capillary self-priming effect, and plugging the nano-micro pores of shale. The results of transmission electron microscopy, particle size distribution, and scanning electron microscopy characterization revealed that SA-NPs exhibited a nanoscale “coalesce” structure, which is composed of spherical particles joined together, and could form a nano-papillary structure on the shale surface. Due to the presence of nano-micro scale rough structures and ultra-low surface energy components, the shale treated by SA-NPS exhibited super-amphiphobic surface property in the contact angle test. Contact angles of water and hexadecane on the shale surface reached up to 154.13° and 151.34° after being treated with SA-NPs, respectively. Furthermore, the addition of 1% SA-NPs in WBDFs could reduce the linear swelling rate from 40.5 to 6.0%, increase the shale cuttings recovery percentages from 82.5 to 95.6%, increase the plugging rate of low permeability shale core from 81.25 to 94.00%, and raise the high-temperature and high-pressure uniaxial compressive strength from 3.45 to 4.87 MPa. Compared with the polyether amine and fumed nano-silica, the addition of SA-NPs produced the best performance. Based on the excellent shale stabilization performance of SA-NPs, a high-performance WBDF was developed and applied in Dagang Oilfield. During the drilling operation, no wellbore instability, sticking, and other complex situations occurred. The results indicate that SA-NPs could better address the issue of wellbore instability in shale formations and have a great application prospect in shale well drilling.

Abstract:Wellbore instability, especially drilling with water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs) in complex shale formations, is a critical challenge for oil and gas development. The purpose of this paper is to study the feasibility of using hydrophobically modified silica nanoparticle (HMN) to enhance the comprehensive performance of WBDFs in the Xinjiang Oilfield, especially the anti-collapse performance. The effect of HMN on the overall performance of WBDFs in the Xinjiang Oilfield, including inhibition, plugging, lubricity, rheology, and filtration loss, was studied with a series of experiments. The mechanism of HMN action was studied by analyzing the changes of shale surface structure and chemical groups, wettability, and capillary force. The experimental results showed that HMN could improve the performance of WBDFs in the Xinjiang Oilfield to inhibit the hydration swelling and dispersion of shale. The plugging and lubrication performance of the WBDFs in the Xinjiang Oilfield were also enhanced with HMN based on the experimental results. HMN had less impact on the rheological and filtration performance of the WBDFs in the Xinjiang Oilfield. In addition, HMN significantly prevented the decrease of shale strength. The potential mechanism of HMN was as follows. The chemical composition and structure of the shale surface were altered due to the adsorption of HMN driven by electrostatic attraction. Changes of the shale surface resulted in significant wettability transition. The capillary force of the shale was converted from a driving force of water into the interior to a resistance. In summary, hydrophobic nanoparticles presented a favorable application potential for WBDFs.

Abstract:Shale formations present significant challenges to traditional drilling fluids due to fluid infiltration, cuttings dispersion, and shale swelling, which can destabilize the wellbore. While oil-based drilling fluids (OBM) effectively address these concerns about their environmental impact, their cost limits their widespread use. Recently, nanomaterials (NPs) have emerged as a promising approach in drilling fluid technology, offering an innovative solution to improve the efficiency of water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs) in shale operations. This study evaluates the potential of utilizing modified silica nanocomposite and graphene nanopowder to formulate a nanoparticle-enhanced water-based drilling fluid (NP-WBDF). The main objective is to investigate the impact of these nanoparticle additives on the flow characteristics, filtration efficiency, and inhibition properties of the NP-WBDF. In this research, a silica nanocomposite was successfully synthesized using emulsion polymerization and analyzed using FTIR, PSD, and TEM techniques. Results showed that the silica nanocomposite exhibited a unimodal particle size distribution ranging from 38 nm to 164 nm, with an average particle size of approximately 72 nm. Shale samples before and after interaction with the graphene nanopowder WBDF and the silica nanocomposite WBDF were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The NP-WBM underwent evaluation through API filtration tests (LTLP), high-temperature/high-pressure (HTHP) filtration tests, and rheological measurements conducted with a conventional viscometer. Experimental results showed that the silica nanocomposite and the graphene nanopowder effectively bridged and sealed shale pore throats, demonstrating superior inhibition performance compared to conventional WBDF. Post adsorption, the shale surface exhibited increased hydrophobicity, contributing to enhanced stability. Overall, the silica nanocomposite and the graphene nanopowder positively impacted rheological performance and provided favorable filtration control in water-based drilling fluids.

Abstract:In the Weizhou Southwest oilfields, drilling delays and suspension of wells prior to reaching the targets due to wellbore instability had occurred frequently. The hard, brittle shale played a problematic role. Conventional water-based drilling fluids did not conquer the problematic formation due to intrinsic performance deficiencies. Though oil-based drilling fluids are routinely preferred in more technically demanding applications, they are cause for increasing concern due to offshore environmental restrictions and expensive disposal costs. An environmentally acceptable water-based drilling fluid was developed to challenge the problematic formation based on the combination of methylglucoside-silicate concept. It stabilized the reactive shale by the same mechanism as oil-based drilling fluid in preventing shale hydration, pore pressure increase, and weakening of shale by effectively developing sufficient osmotic force to offset hydraulic and chemical forces acting to cause filtration flux into the hard, brittle shale. A field trial was initiated on the CNOOC 931 platform. The data from the pilot well showed that the novel drilling fluid exhibited excellent inhibition and lubricity that approached or even exceeded oil-based fluids.
A novel oil-in-water nanoemulsion as a high-temperature plugging agent for wellbore wettability alteration and strengthening

Abstract:Wellbore instability associated with shale hydration and micro-nano pores is one of the most crucial concerns in deep oil and gas drilling operations. In this study, we present a nanoemulsion containing silicates and organosilanes to plug microfractures and mitigate shale hydration by forming a superhydrophobic film in situ on the shale surface via emulsion polymerization and sol–gel process, thereby improving the wellbore stability. At the temperature above 150 °C, the nanoemulsion forms a dense, superhydrophobic film in the pores and on the surface of ceramic sheets, reducing filtration loss by 84.3%. The core showed an increase in strength of 2.86% over the original shale after soaking in the nanoemulsion at 180 °C for 48 h. The shale cuttings covered with film reduced water uptake by 91.56%, thus improving water resistance. The film facilitates to maintain or even improve the rock strength by preventing water absorption and hydration. It also exhibits excellent thermal stability and dynamic water repellency properties at high temperature. We determined that the film consisted of tightly stacked nanofilaments of 5–20 nm in diameter and well-distributed nanospheres of 25–50 nm in diameter, which were identified as crystalline and amorphous symbiotic silica modified by long alkyl chains, respectively. Therefore, in order to overcome the wellbore instability encountered in deep well drilling, we propose a strategy in which the downhole temperature triggers the nanoemulsion to polymerize and seal the pores while simultaneously forming a hydrophobic film on the shale surface. Moreover, it is expected to have practical applications in drilling engineering due to its convenient fabrication, eco-friendly and cost-effective characteristics.

Abstract:Shale stabilizers with high-performance properties are necessary when drilling oil and gas wells because unstable shale constantly poses a risk of increased drilling fluid loss and wellbore instability. In this study, a polyethylene glycol/nanosilica composite grafted with sodium dodecyl sulfate (PEG-NS-SDS) was designed and characterized to act as a shale stabilizer, viscosity modifier, and fluid loss control additive. With PEG-NS-SDS, a water-based fluid (WBF) was made to test its ability to prevent shale from swelling. This was carried out with a shale dispersion test and a linear shale swelling inhibition longevity test. The results demonstrated that the particle size distribution of PEG-NS-SDS was 82–410 nm, with a peak maximum, D50, and mean diameter of 270 nm, 195 nm, and 144 nm, respectively. The WBF with 1.5 wt% PEG-NS-SDS showed the best improvement, and it unveiled a 42% reduction in filtrate loss, followed by PEG-NS of 34%, SiO 2 NP of 29%, and KCl of 23%. Shale swelling was best inhibited by PEG-NS-SDS over KCl, SiO 2 NP, and unmodified PEG-NS. The linear shale A swelling rate of WBF dropped from 72.1 to 31.9% with PEG-NS-SDS, while the swelling rates with KCl, SiO 2 NP, and PEG-NS were 35.1%, 49.1%, and 41.5%, respectively. Hot rolling dispersion experiments revealed that PEG-NS-SDS outperformed SiO 2 NP, PEG-NS, and KCl. When tested on shale B, PEG-NS-SDS recovered 91.2% of the shale dispersion, while KCl, SiO 2 , PEG-NS, and the base fluid recovered 89.3%, 83.7%, 87.6%, and 57.6%, respectively. This study showed that PEG-NS-SDS is more effective at preventing shale swelling because of the synergistic effect between the anionic surfactant and PEG-NS. Overall, the study showed that adding PEG-NS-SDS to the base fluid made it easier for the fluid to inhibit shale from swelling. PEG-NS-SDS proved to be a good additive for drilling mud, with a promising improvement in shale swelling control and wellbore stability.

Abstract:Nanofluids, as an effect additive in oilfield chemistry, has recently attracted significant attention. In this study, the superamphiphobic nanofluid (SAN) was synthesized to be a multi-functional additive in oil based drilling fluid (OBMs). Properties characterization of SAN and its influence on OBMs were investigated. The results showed SAN possessed a spherical shape with a diameter of about 100 nm which could construct a micro-nano structure. Due to the special structure and functional groups (perfluorooctyl) on the particle surface, SAN could alter the shale surface wettability to superamphiphobic, decrease the filtration volume of OBMs, reduce the spontaneous imbibition and maintain the compressive strength of shale core. Furthermore, SAN could exist stably at the interface due to the superamphiphobic characteristic, instead of dispersing in either water or oil phase. Therefore, it enhances the stability of water/oil emulsion. By observing and analyzing the role of SAN in OBMs, it was found SAN could effectively decrease the surface free energy of shale core from 71.47+0.52 to 0.09+0.02 mN/m and interfacial tension of water/oil system from 32.8 to 13.5 mN/m, reduce the capillary additional pressure by 1812 Pa and reverse the capillary force from attractive to repulsive. Accordingly, the OBMs with SAN was thought to be able to be used in the drilling of unconventional oil and gas reservoir well, for the considerable stability and that less liquid would penetrate into the shale pore. So the emulsion stability was enhanced and the wellbore stability was maintained. This study might provide an avenue to solve the issues owing to OBMs during the drilling process by adding additives with superamphiphobic wettability.

Abstract:Optimally performing drilling fluids play a vital role in drilling operations. The demand for thermally stable drilling fluid in the oil and gas sector necessitates using advanced additives to create suitable formulations. This research study introduces the novel application of Mesoporous Nano-Silica (MNS) to enhance water-based drilling fluid's inhibitive, rheological, and fluid loss characteristics. MNS was synthesized by the sol-gel technique with Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB) for generating the pores. The hydrodynamic particle size of the synthesized MNS was 134.47 nm with a stable zeta potential of −32.2 meV. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyzer estimated the specific surface area to be 626 m2/g and the pore volume to be 0.3415 cm3/g. A comparative analysis of the drilling fluid properties is presented in which MNS was added to the fixed base formulation at varied concentrations (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 1 wt%). Samples were subjected to hot rolling at 180 °C temperatures at 100 psi pressure for 16 h, evaluating the influence of thermal aging on the properties of the drilling fluid. The viscometric investigation was performed at 25 and 70 °C while the inhibitive properties were checked via shale recovery test and capillary suction timer. The filtration properties were examined at 100 psi and 500 psi pressure at 150 °C. The experimental findings reveal that MNS can substantially improve the thermal properties of water-based drilling fluids, maintaining rheological characteristics and drastically reducing fluid loss while imparting some inhibitive properties. Interestingly, after hot rolling the plastic viscosity of MNS-infused mud was 77% better than that of the base mud. Incorporating macro-sized particles and MNS nanoparticles into water-based drilling fluids can enhance its rheological properties, reduce filtrate loss, and improve shale inhibition characteristics which may be attributed to either the size effect or the synergistic influence of materials. Therefore, including MNS as a high-performance additive may contribute to advancing drilling operations in the petroleum industry, offering valuable insights for optimizing drilling fluid formulations.

Abstract:Abstract When oil and gas extraction is drilled into water‐sensitive shale formations, water intrusion leads to hydration expansion and dispersion of shale clay minerals, which in turn leads to well wall instability. Two nanomaterials, PET and PEF, were synthesized using Hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (HPEI) as shell‐coated metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs), and the nanomaterials were characterized in terms of molecular structure, thermal stability, and particle size distribution. The blocking and inhibition properties of PET and PEF were tested and investigated by analytical methods such as linear swelling experiments, shale rock chip rolling recovery experiments, and American Petroleum Institute (API) filtration loss experiments, the effects of PET and PEF on the rheology and filter loss reduction of water‐based drilling fuilds (WBDFs) were also investigated. PET and PEF have good blocking and inhibition properties, which somewhat ameliorate the effect of NPs on the rheology of WBDFs, while significantly improving the stability of shale in WBDFs.

Abstract:Thermo-responsive nanocomposites have recently emerged as potential nanoplugging agents for shale stabilization in high-temperature water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs). However, their inhibitory properties have not been very effective in high-temperature drilling operations. Thermo-responsive Janus nanocomposites are expected to strongly interact with clay particles from the inward hemisphere of nanomaterials, which drive the establishment of a tighter hydrophobic membrane over the shale surface at the outward hemisphere under geothermal conditions for shale stabilization. This work combines the synergistic benefits of thermo-responsive and zwitterionic nanomaterials to synchronously enhance the chemical inhibitions and plugging performances in shale under harsh conditions. A novel thermo-responsive Janus nanosilica (TRJS) exhibiting zwitterionic character was synthesized, characterized, and assessed as shale stabilizer for WBDFs at high temperatures. Compared to pristine nanosilica (SiNP) and symmetrical thermo-responsive nanosilica (TRS), TRJS exhibited anti-polyelectrolyte behaviour, in which electrolyte ions screened the electrostatic attraction between the charged particles, potentially stabilizing nanomaterial in hostile shaly environments (i.e., up to saturated brine or API brine). Macroscopically, TRJS exhibited higher chemical inhibition than SiNP and TRS in brine, prompting a better capability to control pressure penetration. TRJS adsorbed onto the clay surface via chemisorption and hydrogen bonding, and the interactions became substantial in brine, according to the results of electrophoretic mobility, surface wettability, and X-ray diffraction. Thus, contributing to the firm trapping of TRJS into the nanopore structure of the shale, triggering the formation of a tight hydrophobic membrane over the shale surface from the outward hemisphere. The addition of TRJS into WBDF had no deleterious effect on fluid properties after hot-treatment at 190 °C, implying that TRJS could find potential use as a shale stabilizer in WBDFs in hostile environments.

Abstract:Shale hydration has been a frequent and challenging technical problem causing wellbore instability in oil and gas drilling processes. The aim of this study is to design a novel hyperbranched polymer nanocomposite (HBPN) based on a synergistic strategy of physical plugging and chemical inhibition to improve wellbore stability. The inhibitive property of HBPN was comprehensively evaluated through the sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) plates immersion test, capillary suction time (CST) test, and shale hot-rolling recovery test. Results implied that HBPN presented better inhibition performance. The shale hydration rate was reduced to 0.03 in the presence of HBPN. Particularly, the shale hot-rolling recovery rate reached 80.54 % at 150 °C and presented long-term shale inhibition durability. It demonstrated excellent plugging performance in the artificial low permeability filter cakes plugging test, reaching a plugging efficiency of 42.45 % with the addition of 2.0 w/v% HBPN. The potential mechanism of action of HBPN was proposed through particle size distribution (PSD) measurement, Zeta (ζ) potential measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The coordination of electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding impelled a decrease in the ζ potential and interlayer spacing of Na-MMT. Meanwhile, HBPN could embed into formation pores and fractures to establish a tight plugging zone. This approach outlined herein might provide an avenue to strengthen wellbore stability for the drilling industry.

Abstract:Due to the stringent environmental regulations that have been gradually proposed, the additives of WBDFs with low toxicity and degradability have become crucial. Clays and nano-micron fractures are the main causes of wellbore instability in ocean shale formations. In this paper, the plugging inhibitor was designed based on the skeletal structure of molecule, functional groups and molecular weight. Then the silane coupling agent was used to modify silica nanoparticles. And further the ZY-1 as a harmless plugging inhibitor was created by graft copolymerization of transition product and AA-AAK. These evaluation results demonstrated that ZY-1 not only was nontoxic and biodegradable, but also displayed a decent thermal stability (150 °C) and plugging inhibitive performance. What's more, this paper proposed the underlying inhibition and plugging mechanisms based on the structure and function of ZY-1.

Abstract:A layered Nanophase material LDP of 30 nm in particle sizes has been developed to satisfy the needs of shale drilling such as cuttings carrying,plugging nanometer-sized fractures and inhibiting the dispersion of shale formations.Laboratory experiments showed that a 2％LDP suspension,after aging at 120 ℃,had higher elastic modulus,yield stress and better shear thinning ability than a 6％ sodium bentonite suspension.In 0.5％PAC-LV solution,1％LDP shows better ability in increasing the viscosity and gel strengths of the solution than 4％ Na-bentonite.Periodic oscillatory strain scanning demonstrated that LDP suspension showed better ability to restore and break down its gel structure at the switch of high strain and low strain.Particle size measurement and transmission electron microscopy indicated that,compared with Na-bentonite,it is much easier for the LDP to form network structure both in water and in PAC-LV solution.To evaluate the plugging performance of LDP,shale samples rinsed in different solutions were measured for their pore sizes using N2 adsorption method.The measurement showed that LDP has better plugging capacity than nano SiO2 and Nabentonite.SEM scanning showed that LDP can plug the long and narrow nano-sized holes in shale.In clay swelling test,the percent core swelling caused by 2％LDP solution was 45％ of the percent core swelling caused by fresh water,better than 7％KC1 solution.The percent shale cuttings recovery of LDP in hot rolling test at 100 ℃ was 59.6％,equivalent to 7％KC1 solution.Clay clod rinsed in 2％ LDP solution for 96 h still kept its integrity.In general,LDP nanophase material is beneficial to viscosity and gel strength enhancement,plugging of nanometer-sized pores and inhibiting shale formations,and is thus prospective in formulating high performance water base drilling fluids for shale drilling.

Abstract:The development of micro cracks in shale formations can easily lead to wellbore instability caused by liquid phase invasion. In order to effectively seal the shale micropores, the surface treatment of nano-SiO2 particles was developed using the silicane coupling agent A-1891. Then, the temperature-sensitive polypenic acrylamide polymer was modified onto the surface of the nanoprocal particle through reaction to obtain the nanosomal blocking agent ASN. The infrared spectrum shows that there are chemical bonds between the generated polymer chains, rather than simple physical composites, indicating the successful synthesis of the temperature-responsive nanosealing agent ASN. The particle size analysis showed that the synthesized nanoparticles in ASN have a uniform particle size distribution and display no agglomeration phenomenon. Applying ASN as a sealing agent in drilling fluid effectively fills the nanoscale micropores and microcracks in shale, making shale denser and significantly improving the wellbore stability of shale formations. In addition, it has good temperature resistance, can adapt to reservoirs at different temperatures, is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, and has good prospects for stable applications in shale formation wellbore.

Abstract:Wellbore instability caused by shale swelling and dispersion has always been a thorny issue for drilling complex formations. Nanotechnology has offered a revolutionary solution for shale stabilization in water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs). Recent technological advancement in nanomaterials for optimal performance using economically and environmentally sustainable pathway is an utmost desire in oil and gas industries. In this research, Janus nanocomposite (TRJN) with rice husk (RH)-extracted biogenic nanosilica core (RH-NSP) having the shell integrating synergistic benefits of thermo-responsive and amino-based materials, which was reported in our previous work was assessed as a novel shale stabilizer in drilling fluids. The product is anticipated to simultaneously improve the chemical inhibition and nanoplugging performances in shaly formations. TRJN was assessed as an additive in WBDF in comparison with symmetrical thermo-responsive polymer-based nanocomposite (TRN) counterpart and parent RH-NSP. Results from the rheological test revealed that, albeit both nanocomposites (i.e., TRN and TRJN) could provide a certain rheological control above the LCST compared to RH-NSP, but TRJN-blended fluid was less sensitive to increasing temperatures. The inhibitory effects were investigated based on cuttings hot rolling recovery rate, linear swelling rate, pressure penetration rate, tensile strength of shale reduction rate, and high temperatures and high pressures filtration loss. TRJN demonstrated higher chemical inhibition compared to RH-NSP and TRN, driving a better capacity to control pressure penetration. The higher mean free energy of TRJN/Na-Mt (sodium montmorillonite) system than TRN/Na-Mt system was an indication of its stronger interactions with Na-Mt particle, which triggered changes in microstructures, considering the results of zeta potential, FT-IR, surface wettability, X-ray diffraction, and SEM analyses. This, therefore contributing to firmly trap the TRJN into the multi-scale pore structure of the shale and beneficially promoted the construction of a tight hydrophobic plugging layer over the shale surface from the outward face. Lastly, the synergistic enhancement mechanisms of shale inhibition with TRJN was further proposed.

Abstract:Wellbore instability is a challenging issue in drilling engineering, especially in shale formations. The objective of this paper is to achieve wellbore stability by changing the hydrophobicity of the shale surface and plugging the micro-nano pores through the synthesis of modified polystyrene micro-nano spheres (MPS). The MPS was characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), particle size distribution, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The inhibition and plugging performance of MPS were evaluated through linear expansion, shale recovery, and plugging of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microporous membrane. To study the inhibition and plugging mechanisms of MPS, contact angle, pore size distribution, and SEM analysis were performed. The results showed that MPS was spherical with a particle size distribution of 91–712 nm and had good thermal stability. The MPS had excellent compatibility with drilling fluids and better inhibition than KCl, polyamines, and SiO 2 . When using PTFE microporous filter membrane as a filtration medium, the API filtration loss volume of 3 wt% MPS aqueous solution was only 42 mL, while that of the solution without MPS was 260 mL. The pore size of the PTFE microporous membrane was decreased after plugging. The MPS adsorbed on the shale surface to form a hydrophobic layer, which could weaken the hydrophilicity of shale. The contact angle of shale slices treated with 2 wt% MPS was 108.2°. Furthermore, SEM observations indicated that MPS can improve the quality of mud cakes and plug the small pores. MPS has potential applications in improving wellbore stability.

Abstract:The wellbore instability caused by shale swelling is an obvious technical problem that has plagued the drilling industry for a long time. Shale inhibitor is a kind of drilling fluid additive, which can significantly inhibit shale hydration and dispersion, so it can stabilize the wellbore of shale. In this paper, modified peanut shell nanocellulose for improving wellbore stability, which is expected to be an alternative to the current shale inhibitors, was synthesized by using peanut shell and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as raw materials. The structure of modified peanut shell nanocellulose was characterized by FTIR, TGA, TEM, and XRD, and the results showed that modified peanut shell nanocellulose had been successfully prepared and it displayed temperature resistance up to 230℃. The inhibition performance of modified nanocellulose was studied by a shale rolling recovery experiment, a linear expansion experiment, and the particle size distribution experiment. Results demonstrated the shale rolling recovery rate in 3.0 wt % modified nanocellulose solutions was up to 87.10% at the rolling condition of 120℃ × 16 h, and the swelling rate of artificial core was reduced by 17.5% in 2.0% inhibitor solutions. The average particle size of Na-bentonite (Na-MMT) in 2.0% inhibitor solutions was 33.1 µm. Finally, the inhibition mechanism was studied, inhibitor can enter into the interlayer of shale and change the appearance of bentonite by physical and chemical interaction, and in that way achieve a good inhibition result.

Abstract:Nanoscale plugging agent is essential to wellbore stability of troublesome shale formation in the drilling of oil and gas wells. In this paper, polymeric nanospheres (PNS) with a double cross-linked structure were synthesized using monomers of styrene (ST), acrylamide (AM), 2-Acrylamide- 2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC). PNS were characterized by FTIR, SEM and TGA. The plugging performance of PNS was analyzed using nitrogen adsorption experiments and SEM. And compatibility with water based drilling fluid (WBM) was studied. Experimental results showed that PNS had a mean particle size of 133 nm, and could retain about half of the original size after high temperature treatment under 150–200°C. TGA showed that the initial decomposition temperature of PNS is around 315°C. After plugging by PNS, both the specific surface area and pore volume of the shale cuttings decreased substantially compared with those of shale samples treated with water. Thus, PNS was thermal stable in WBM under high temperature and could effectively plug shale pores. Besides, PNS was beneficial to reduce both API and HTHP fluid loss of WBM.

Abstract:Water-based drilling fluids can cause hydration of the wellbore rocks, thereby leading to instability. This study aimed to synthesize a hydrophobic small-molecule polymer (HLMP) as an inhibitor to suppress mud shale hydration. An infrared spectral method and a thermogravimetric technique were used to characterize the chemical composition of the HLMP and evaluate its heat stability. Experiments were conducted to measure the linear swelling, rolling recovery rate, and bentonite inhibition rate and evaluate accordingly the inhibition performance of the HLMP. Moreover, the HLMP was characterized through measurements of the zeta potential, particle size distribution, contact angles, and interlayer space testing. As confirmed by the results, the HLMP could successfully be synthesized with a favorable heat stability. Furthermore, favorable results were found for the inhibitory processes of the HLMP on swelling and dispersed hydration during mud shale hydration. The positively charged HLMP could be electrically neutralized with clay particles, thereby inhibiting diffusion in the double electron clay layers. The hydrophobic group in the HLMP molecular structure resulted in the formation of a hydrophobic membrane on the rock surface, enhancing the hydrophobicity of the rock. In addition, the small molecules of the HLMP could plug the spaces between the layers of bentonite crystals, thereby reducing the entry of water molecules and inhibiting shale hydration.
Environmental Friendliness and High Performance of Multifunctional Tween 80/ZnO-Nanoparticles-Added Water-Based Drilling Fluid: An Experimental Approach

Abstract:The energy industry is exploring sustainable chemistry and engineering solutions for exploitation of shale reservoirs. Smectite-rich shale is challenging to drill with traditional water-based drilling fluid (WBDF). The objectives of this study are (i) to investigate acute toxicity of drilling fluids and (ii) to enhance the rheological properties, lubricity, and clay inhibition behavior of WBDF by adding Tween 80 (T80)/ZnO nanoparticles. Acute toxicity results revealed 100% survival rate of white leg shrimp in WBDF waste. At 0.7 g, the optimum concentration of T80ZnO, the plastic viscosity (PV) was improved by 12%; the negative surface charge of nanomaterial might have improved repulsion forces/stability and enhanced viscosity in the drilling fluids. Yield point (YP) was improved by 71%, moreover 10 min gel strength (GS) and 10 s GS were significantly increased by 32 and 54%, respectively. The metal oxide nanosolids induced heat transfer characteristics and ensured gelling and yield strength properties. Lubricity was slightly increased by 7%; the ZnO nanorods between the two sliding contact surfaces (i.e., assuming drill pipe and casing) improved lubricity. Filtrate loss (FL) volume was considerably minimized to 17 and 30% at API and high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) conditions, respectively; this observation could be explained by pores plugging in the filter paper. Heated clay swelling inhibition was optimized after addition of 0.6 g of T80ZnO nanoparticles to WBDF. The clay inhibition was enhanced by 9 and 17% when compared to conventional WBDF and fresh water, respectively; this progress might have attributed to the corresponding: (i) pores plugging in the clay and (ii) interparticle pores bridging between existing drilling additives and nanomaterial.
