Abstract:Cloward technique of cervical discectomy and fusion is a long and complex surgical procedure and instrumentation, by which complicated infection is rare in an era of routine prophylactic antimicrobial agent, especially in procedures by anterior approach. A study in the journal of Spine suggested that the incidence of unintentional laceration of the dura mater during spinal surgery might be as high as 14%.1 A majority of them are repaired intraoperatively and/or present as a spontaneous process of healing. Therefore, leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and secondary intracranial infection induced by incidental durotomy are rare. Levi et al.2 reviewed spinal instrumentation procedures in 452 cases at a single institution, finding that 17 patients got infections in the operative areas. Infection occurred after posterior spinal instrumentation procedures (7.2%) and no infection was found after anterior instrumentation procedures regardless of the vertebral levels. Likewise, Aydinli et al.3 reported that 8 patients were complicated by acute infection out of 174 patients undergoing instrumented spinal surgery, including no anterior procedures. To our knowledge, we are the first to report a complete clinical course concerning CSF leakage and secondary intracranial infection induced by Cloward technique of cervical discectomy and fusion.
Gorham-Stout Disease Affecting the Spine with Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage and Chiari-like Tonsillar Herniation: a Rare Case Report and Review of Literature

Abstract:BackgroundGorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a very rare disorder characterized by massive osteolysis of poorly understood aetiology. The association between GSD involving the skull base and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage has been reported in the literature. However, few cases of CSF leakage and Chiari-like tonsillar herniation in GSD involving the spine have been reported.Case presentationWe present the case of a 20-year-old man with GSD involving the thoracic and lumbar spine, which caused CSF leakage and Chiari-like tonsillar herniation. The patient underwent four spinal surgeries for osteolytic lesions of the spine over a 10-year period. Here, we discuss the possible aetiology of the development of CSF leakage. Epidural blood patch (EBP) was performed at the T11-T12 level to repair the CSF leakage. After EBP treatment, rebound intracranial hypertension (RIH) developed, and tonsillar herniation disappeared 2 months later.ConclusionsGSD involving the spine with CSF leakage and Chiari-like tonsillar herniation is relatively rare. For patients who have undergone multiple spinal surgeries, minimally invasive treatment is an alternative treatment for CSF leakage. EBP can repair CSF leakage secondary to GSD and improve chronic brain sagging, with reversibility of Chiari-like malformations.
Cerebellar Hemorrhage and Spinal Fluid Overdrainage With Tonsillar Herniation Following Spine Surgery

Abstract:Spinal fluid overdrainage with cerebellar hemorrhage is a rare complication of spinal surgery that can have severe consequences if not detected quickly. We present the case of a 72-year-old Caucasian female who underwent thoracolumbar fixation for flatback syndrome. Intraoperatively, the patient suffered a dural injury that was repaired. In the immediate postoperative period, the patient's neurological status rapidly deteriorated within an hour and Jackson-Pratt (JP) drain output measured 300 ml of serosanguinous fluid. A stat CT scan revealed cerebellar hemorrhage, pneumocephalus, and tonsillar herniation. The postoperative drain was immediately removed, and a ventriculostomy tube was placed, confirming low intracranial pressure. Postoperatively, the patient was electively ventilated for three days, continued with remote cerebellar hemorrhage (RCH) treatment and precaution, and extubated on the third day as the patient's neurological function continued to improve. The patient was discharged home nine days after the initial surgery, with a complete recovery. This case indicates that wound drainage in the face of durotomy can induce cerebellar herniation as early as within an hour postoperatively following spine surgery with a dural tear, even after dural repair. This case also suggests that early recognition and appropriate management of RCH is the key to a full recovery. Even in the event of tonsillar herniation and cerebellar hemorrhage, a complete recovery is possible with early recognition and proper management.
Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage after Thoracic Decompression

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this study is to review cerebrospinal fluid leakage (CSFL) after thoracic decompression and describe its regular and special features. Data Sources: Literature cited in this review was retrieved from PubMed and Medline and was primarily published during the last 10 years. “Cerebrospinal fluid”, “leakage”, “dural tears”, and “thoracic decompression” were the indexed terms. Relevant citations in the retrieved articles were also screened to include more data. Study Selection: All retrieved literature was scrutinized, and four categories were recorded: incidence and risk factors, complications, treatment modalities, and prognosis. Results: CSFL is much more frequent after thoracic decompression than after cervical and lumbar spinal surgeries. Its occurrence is related to many clinical factors, especially the presence of ossified ligaments and the adhesion of the dural sac. While its impact on the late neurological recovery is currently controversial, CSFL increases the risk of other perioperative complications, such as low intracranial pressure symptoms, infection, and vascular events. The combined use of primary repairs during the operation and conservative treatment postoperatively is generally effective for most CSFL cases, whereas lumbar drains and reoperations should be implemented as rescue options for refractory cases only. Conclusions: CSFL after thoracic decompression has not been specifically investigated, so the present study provides a systematic and comprehensive review of the issue. CSFL is a multi-factor-related complication, and pathological factors play a decisive role. The importance of CSFL is in its impact on the increased risk of other complications during the postoperative period. Methods to prevent these complications are in need. In addition, though the required treatment resources are not special for CSFL after thoracic decompression, most CSFL cases are conservatively curable, and surgeons should be aware of it.
A rare case of concomitant pneumocephalus and pneumorachis after lumbar spine surgery with late presenting dural leak

Abstract:IntroductionWe report a case of pneumocephalus and pneumorachis i.e., air in the cranial cavity and the spinal canal, which are rarely associated with a primary spinal cause. Their concomitant occurrence and association with a late presenting dural leak are also uncommon.Case presentationA 70-year-old man presented 1 month after decompressive surgery for lumbar canal stenosis with leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the wound site and severe headache. There were no signs of surgical site infection or meningitis. There was no intraoperative or immediate postoperative evidence of dural tear. He was neurologically intact. On detailed work-up, he was found to have air collections in the subarachnoid and intraventricular spaces in the brain and intraspinal air in both the cervical and the lumbar regions. He showed gradual resolution of these findings radiologically and symptomatic improvement through conservative management with analgesics, empirical antibiotics, high flow oxygen, and maintenance of hydration within 1 month.DiscussionPneumocephalus and pneumorachis are commonly seen after trauma. Spine surgery is a rare cause. They may present with symptoms similar to meningitis and may be erroneously diagnosed and treated. No standard treatment guidelines exist in the literature. Most cases have been managed conservatively. Early detection may allow noninvasive management leading to complete resolution.
[Study of dental caries prevalence in children of Yinchuan in China].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To assess the dental caries prevalence of children in Yinchuan. METHODS The 3-, 5-, 12-, 15-year-old children were chosed from nursery, primary and middle schools of Yinchuan in 1990, 1996 and 2001. The survey was carried out by five senior dentists from stomatologic hospital of Yinchuan according WHO criteria. DMFT, DMFS and the ratio of tooth filled were counted. RESULTS From 1990 to 2001, the prevalence of dental caries of 3-, 5-, 12-year-old children was degression (P < 0.01). But the prevalence of dental caries of 15-year-old children had no obvious change. The dental caries of small proportion of children were serious. The ratio of tooth filling was low. CONCLUSION With the development of oral health education, the prevalence of dental caries of 3-, 5-, 12-year-old children in Yinchuan is descend. But the diagnosis, prevention and treatment should be strengthened, and the ratio of tooth filling should be increased.
Intracerebral Hematoma after Endoscopic Fenestration of an Arachnoid Cyst A Case Report

Abstract:Rationale: An intracranial arachnoid cyst is a relatively common congenital benign lesion. A small number of patients present with neurological symptoms. Endoscopic fenestration has become a common treatment for arachnoid cysts in recent years, but intracerebral hematoma after surgery is rarely reported. Patient concerns: A 60-year-old woman with an arachnoid cyst in the left parietal and occipital lobes showed obvious progressive neurological deficits. She had weakness in her right limbs for 2 years and a sudden convulsion in her left limbs. Diagnosis: An arachnoid cyst in the left parietal and occipital lobes was detected on magnetic resonance imaging. Intervention: Endoscopic fenestration was performed for the cyst. However, she developed an intracerebral hematoma after surgery, which was detected by computed tomography. Due to the exacerbation of the patient's condition in the early stage after surgery, reoperation was performed to remove the hematoma. Outcomes: The patient was finally cured with no serious neurological deficits. Lessons: The rare complication of intracerebral hematoma after surgery for an arachnoid cyst can lead to a rapid deterioration in the patient's condition. More-adequate preoperative examination and neuronavigation should be conducted during surgery. Appropriate enlargement of the bone hole may help protect against this complication. Moreover, prompt reoperation for the intracerebral hematoma may improve the prognosis.
Pneumocephalus After Anterior Lumbar Spinal Surgery Due to Trauma: A Case Report

Abstract:Pneumocephalus as a complication of anterior lumbar spinal surgery is extremely rare. A 53-year-old male patient presented with L4 fracture. Posterior fixation from L3 to L5 was conducted one day after the trauma. As the patient's neurological deficit persisted, additional anterior surgery by L4 vertebral body replacement was performed on the 19th day. Both surgeries were completed without obvious intraoperative complications. Two weeks after the anterior lumbar surgery, the patient complained of severe headaches, and computed tomography scan revealed pneumocephalus and massive fluid retention in the abdomen. The symptoms improved with conservative treatment, including bed rest, spinal drainage, intravenous drip infusion, and prophylactic administration of antibiotics. Due to the lack of tamponade effect in the soft tissues, a large amount of cerebrospinal fluid leakage may induce and cause progression of pneumocephalus in anterior dural injury.
Related Factors Analysis of Dysphagia Following Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the related factors of dysphagia following anterior cervical decompression and fusion.Method:490 cases undergoing anterior discectomy decompression and fusion from October 2002 to October 2004 were followed up,of these,there were 306 males and 184 females,with the mean age of 47.2 years(range,12 to 76 years).Of these 490 patients,415 had cervical spondylosis,43 had cervical fracture or dislocation,22 had cervical disc herniation,8 had cervical spine tumor,and 2 had cervical spine tuberculosis.490 patients were reviewed retrospectively postoperatively about their swallow dysfunction(objective)and swallow comfortlessness(subjective).All cases with dysphgia accepted dexamethasone used intravenously and correspondant therapy.Result:490 cases were followed up,and 96(19.6%)of them had postoperative dysphagia which lasted for 3 weeks to 2 years.Of 96 patients with dysphagia,with the mean age of 57.6 yeas(range,38 to 63 years).Of 96 patients with dysphagia,89 cases had titanium plates placement,7 cases had intervertebral cages placement.Those without plates or cages placement and those with artificial disc placement had no postoperative dysphagia.Female,elder and titanium plates planting was associated with postoperative dysphagia.After 14.2 months follow-up,90 cases(93.7%)with dysphagia cured or improved,while 6 cases had no improvement.Conclusion:Postoperative dysphagia is a common complication associated with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion,the causemay be multifactory.As a result,clinicians should pay more attention to this complication and make proper intervention.
Treatment experience for full-thickness wound dehiscence with cerebrospinal fluid leakage following posterior primary spine surgery: Three case reports

Abstract:Rationale: Full-thickness wound dehiscence with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage following posterior spine surgery is a rare but troublesome complication. In the present study, 3 clinical cases associated with this entity are reported. Patient concerns: The first case developed incision effusion 5 days after posterior decompression and internal fixation for lumbar spinal stenosis. The second case has the same diagnosis and treatment with the first case. She developed intraoperative CSF leak and incision effusion 7 days after the surgery. The third case developed incision effusion 6 days after posterior single door laminoplasty for cervical spondylosis. Diagnosis: All cases developed CSF leak, incision effusion and finally full-thickness wound dehiscence on the postoperative period. Interventions: Bed rest, drainage, vacuum sealing drainage (VSD), and reoperations were applied in all of the patients. Trapezius flap transfer was applied to the third case. One lumbar patient developed deep infection and meningitis; thus, the internal fixation and bone graft were removed. Outcomes: All of the patients received wound healing finally and were followed up for >6 months. No incision complications reoccurred, and preoperative symptoms significantly relieved. Lessons: Several techniques can be adopted to minimize the incidence of complications and proper surgical repair is the most important. Lumbar cistern drainage and VSD are recommended. Some other available options of management will also help.
Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage after Surgeries on the Thoracic Spine: A Review of 362 Cases

Abstract:Study Design: A retrospective clinical review.Purpose: To describe the incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leakage (CSFL) after thoracic decompression and examine the CSFL predisposing clinical factors.Overview of Literature: CSFL is a common complication following thoracic decompression but has not been sufficiently addressed in former studies.Methods: A cohort of 362 cases of thoracic decompression from February of 2005 to June of 2013 was examined. The case medical records were reviewed and the occurrence of CSFL and the related clinical parameters were noted. The incidence of CSFL for the entire cohort and each surgical approach were described. Besides, the relationship between CSFL and other clinical parameters were assessed, of which odds ratio values of all CSFL-associated parameters were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analysis.Results: The incidence of CSFL for the entire cohort was 32.3%. Different surgical approaches had different incidences of CSFL, and circumferential decompression had the highest incidence. Though many different clinical parameters were related to the occurrences of CSFL, being older than 52 years, having ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament or having longer operative segments than 3 vertebrae were significant risk factors for CSFL (p<0.05). Besides, surgeries on the mid-thoracic spine had an increased risk of CSFL (p<0.05).Conclusions: From our analysis, CSFL was a common complication after thoracic decompression with the incidence of up to 32.3%. This study identified the predisposing clinical factors, and spinal surgeons should be aware of these risk factors to reduce its incidence.
Tension pneumocephalus as a complication of lumbar drainage for cerebral aneurysm surgery--case report

Abstract:A 66-year-old man developed tension pneumocephalus after failed lumbar drainage before clipping surgery for a ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysm. After puncture with a Tuohy needle, the spinal catheter could not be inserted into the spinal dura, so surgery proceeded without the catheter placement. The patient's neurological status deteriorated suddenly into coma within 15 hours after uneventful clipping of the aneurysm. Computed tomography revealed tension pneumocephalus with marked brain shift. Intracranial hypotension was probably caused by continuous cerebrospinal fluid leakage from the iatrogenic spinal dural tear, resulting in air entry and accumulation into the cranium from an unidentified opening of the cranial dura. The patient was immediately treated with autologous epidural blood patch administration in the lumbar spine, followed by reopening of the craniotomy incision and flap to evacuate the accumulated air. The patient made a quick and uneventful neurological recovery after the rescue procedure.
The E3 Ligase CHIP Mediates Ubiquitination and Degradation of Mixed-Lineage Kinase 3

Abstract:ABSTRACT Mixed-lineage kinase 3 (MLK3) activates mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways and has important functions in migration, invasion, proliferation, tumorigenesis, and apoptosis. We investigated the role of the E3 ligase carboxyl terminus of Hsc70-interacting protein (CHIP) in the regulation of MLK3 protein levels. We show that CHIP interacts with MLK3 and, together with the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme UbcH5 (UbcH5a, -b, -c, or -d), ubiquitinates MLK3 in vitro. CHIP or Hsp70 overexpression promoted endogenous MLK3 ubiquitination and induced a decline in MLK3 protein levels in cells with Hsp90 inhibition. Furthermore, CHIP overexpression caused a proteasome-dependent reduction in exogenous MLK3 protein. Geldanamycin (GA), heat shock, and osmotic shock treatments also reduced the level of MLK3 protein via a CHIP-dependent mechanism. In addition, CHIP depletion in ovarian cancer SKOV3 cells increased cell invasion, and the enhancement of invasiveness was abrogated by small interfering RNA (siRNA)-mediated knockdown of MLK3. Thus, CHIP modulates MLK3 protein levels in response to GA and stress stimuli, and CHIP-dependent regulation of MLK3 is required for suppression of SKOV3 ovarian cancer cell invasion.

Abstract:Anterior cervical spine surgery (ACSS) is a surgical intervention widely used for a myriad of indications including degenerative, oncologic, inflammatory, traumatic, and congenital spinal conditions. A primary concern for surgeons performing ACSS is the postoperative development of oropharyngeal dysphagia. Current literature reports a wide incidence of this complication ranging from 1 to 79%. Dysphagia after ACSS is multifactorial, with common risk factors being prolonged duration of operation, revision surgeries, multilevel surgeries, and use of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2. Many technical strategies have been developed to reduce the risk of postoperative dysphagia, including the development of low-profile implants and retropharyngeal local steroid application. In this article, we review the most recent literature regarding the epidemiology and pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria, risk factors, and management of dysphagia after ACSS.

Subacute Post-Traumatic Ascending Myelopathy after T12 Burst Fracture in a 32-Year-old Male: Case Report and Surgical Result of Cervical Durotomy.

Abstract:To draw attention to a rare neurological deterioration after spinal cord injury (SCI) and to discuss evidence supporting an increase in cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP), we present an extremely rare case of subacute post-traumatic ascending myelopathy (SPAM) in which the patient sustained a T12 fracture initially resulting in paraplegia and after undergoing posterior fixation and anterior decompression. The patient was a 32-year-old healthy man who sustained a T12 burst fracture with complete paraplegia after a fall injury. The patient underwent a posterior reduction and short-segment fixation 8 h after the injury and an anterior thoracoscopic-assisted decompression on post-traumatic day 8. On post-traumatic day 21, he had a progressive neurological deterioration with dyspnoea and decreased muscle strength of both upper extremities that could not be relieved by conservative intervention. After undergoing a cervical posterior laminectomy and durotomy, the patient exhibited the clinical manifestation of brain herniation. There was no recovery of autonomous respiration, and the patient entered a coma. The patient died on post-traumatic day 25 because of cardiac and respiratory arrest. SPAM is a rare, potentially fatal neurological deterioration after SCI; however, a prompt diagnosis can be made by magnetic resonance imaging. Our observations suggest that an increase in CSFP may be the main cause of SPAM. The paraplegic level should be recorded daily so that neurological deterioration can be recognised as soon as possible.
Retropharyngeal Granulation: Delayed Complication of Anterior Cervical Diskectomy and Fusion in C2-3

Abstract:Background: A 26-year-old man presented with acute quadriparesis owing to a traffic accident. A computed tomography scan revealed a hangman fracture and locking of the left facet joint at C2-3. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a high signal change of the spinal cord on T2-weighted image and hemorrhage in the C2-3 level. Case description: An emergency closed reduction after anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion were performed for spinal stability and decompression of the dural sac. Five months postoperatively, C1-2-3 posterior wiring using an iliac bone graft with the Brook method was performed due to nonunion of C2-3. After using the posterior cervical approach, the patient began complaining about the difficulty in swallowing. A 5 × 2 × 1-cm-sized posterior pharyngeal wall mass was detected on an endoscopic examination. Despite conservative management, the retropharyngeal mass progressed and dysphagia worsened, so the retropharyngeal wall granulation mass was resected by a laryngologist. Despite removal of the granulation mass, dysphagia and throat discomfort persisted for about 2 years. The plate and screws were removed considering their possible correlation with the granulation tissue. One month after plate removal, the retropharyngeal granulation tissue resolved almost spontaneously. At the last follow-up, the radiologic examination showed well-fused C1-2-3 with good alignment. The patient had no residual neurologic deficits or dysphagia. Conclusions: Retropharyngeal granulation can occur as a late complication associated with plate fixation after anterior cervical diskectomy and fusion. Recurrent retropharyngeal wall granulation caused by plate irritation might only be resolved after plate and screw removal.
Intradural non-calcified thoracic disc herniation causing spontaneous intracranial hypotension: a case report

Abstract:Background: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a rare pathology caused by a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. If intractable by conventional methods (i.e. bedrest, analgesics, or epidural blood patching) it may lead to the inability of the patient to cope with daily life and eventually to life-threatening complications. Recently, calcified discogenic microspurs or dorsal osteophytes were identified as a major cause for ventral CSF loss through vertical longitudinal dural slits. We report a rare case of intractable SIH due to an intradural disc herniation at the thoracolumbar junction (without signs of calcification) and its management. Case presentation: A 46-year old woman suffered from orthostatic headache (sudden onset, no history of trauma) due to intractable SIH for over 2 month (without neurologic deficits). There was no clinical amelioration by conservative measures (analgesics, bedrest) and serial unspecific epidural blood patches (repeated for 3 times). She was diagnosed with an intradural disc herniation at the thoracolumbar junction causing a CSF leak. Surgical exploration by a translaminar and transdural approach with removal of the disc herniation and closure of the CSF leak was performed with immediate cessation of orthostatic symptoms. Histological workup revealed non-calcified intervertebral disc material. After 3 months of follow-up and no evidence for clinical relapse the patient returned to work. Conclusions: We report the rare phenomenon of an intradural non-calcified disc sequester at the thoracolumbar junction as the cause of a ventral dural tear leading to a CSF leak with intractable SIH. This is of particular interest as the major cause of ventral dural leakage is thought to arise from calcified discogenic microspurs or dorsal osteophytes. Furthermore, we comprehensively describe a short and reasonable diagnostic and surgical approach of this rare pathology, which may particularly be of use in daily clinical routine in neurological wards and general surgical spine centers not facing such pathologies on a regular basis.

Abstract:Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a widely performed surgical procedure for treating cervical disease. [ 1 , 2 ] Cervical disc herniation is a degenerative disease of the cervical spine in which a protruded disc compresses the exiting nerve and incurs segmental instability. ACDF via an anterior approach to the neck would be the most commonly implemented surgical option for this cervical spinal condition. In addition to common postoperative complications such as bleeding, infection, and pseudoarthrosis after ACDF, damage such as laryngeal nerve, muscle, soft tissue damage, and dysphagia may result from the anterior approach. [ 3 ] Dysphagia is a disabling condition that may have a detrimental effect on quality of life. The incidence of dysphagia varies among studies owing to differences in the surgical method, individual patient characteristics, evaluation method, and follow-up period. In a previous report, the percentage of patients who experienced difficulty in swallowing immediately after ACDF surgery was relatively high. [ 4 ] The rate of dysphagia reported after surgery ranges from 1% to 79%, but in most cases, these symptoms are in the short term and tend to improve naturally over time. [ 4 ] Despite the limited information available on rehabilitative strategies for treating dysphagia following ACDF, this case report aims to evaluate and recommend an effective rehabilitation strategy for patients experiencing post-ACDF dysphagia.

Abstract:The delay, throughput and blocking characteristics of a population of Md data users and Mv voice operating in a mobile network environment are evaluated. Frequency hopping and forward error correction are used in like users simultaneous transmission while MFSK signals are being investigated as a candidate for data modulation. The presented network and analysis differs from recent proposals by the inclusion of one or more of the following aspects: Considering the interaction between the queueing aspects and the modulation aspects of the network. Studying the exact phenomena bit of errors, traffic variations, resulting packet errors, nature of data and voice traffic, effect of bulk and interactive data and silence and talk periods of voice. Potential error techniques and adaptation of back off strategies in FH networks are also investigated.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Cerebral infarction is an extremely rare postoperative complication of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), particularly in the delayed setting. We present a case who had a sudden stroke on day 18 after surgery. By sharing our experience with this case, we hope to provide new information about stroke after anterior cervical surgery.CASE SUMMARY:We present the case of a 61-year-old man with more than 20 years of hypertension and 14 years of coronary heart disease who had suffered a stroke 11 years ago. The patient was admitted for a multiple ACDF due to symptoms of cervical spondylotic myelopathy and had a sudden stroke on day 18 after surgery. Imaging findings showed a large-area infarct of his left cerebral hemisphere and thrombosis in his left common carotid artery. With the consent of his family, the thrombus was removed and a vascular stent was implanted through an interventional operation. Forty days later, the patient was transferred to a rehabilitation hospital for further treatment. He had normal consciousness but slurred speech at the 1-year follow-up evaluation. The motor and sensory functions of his hemiplegic limbs partially recovered.CONCLUSION:This case illustrated that a postoperative stroke related to anterior cervical surgery may be attributed to prolonged carotid retraction and might have a long silent period. Preventive measures include careful preoperative and postoperative examination for high-risk patients as well as gentle and intermittent retraction of carotid artery sheath during operation.
