Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising alternative to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) for high-mobility communications. We propose a novel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system based on OTFS modulation. We begin by deriving new sensing and communication signal models for the proposed MIMO-OTFS ISAC system that explicitly capture inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) effects. We then develop a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) based multi-target detection and delay-Doppler-angle estimation algorithm for MIMO-OTFS radar sensing that can simultaneously mitigate and exploit ISI/ICI effects, to prevent target masking and surpass standard unambiguous detection limits in range/velocity. Moreover, considering two operational modes (discovery/track), we propose an adaptive MIMO-OTFS ISAC transmission strategy. For the discovery mode, we introduce the concept of delay-Doppler (DD) multiplexing, enabling omnidirectional probing of the environment and large virtual array at the OTFS radar receiver. For the track mode, we pursue a directional transmission approach and design an OTFS ISAC optimization algorithm in spatial and DD domains, seeking the optimal trade-off between radar signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and achievable rate. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed sensing algorithm and reveal valuable insights into OTFS ISAC trade-offs under varying communication channel characteristics.

Abstract:By multiplexing information symbols in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising candidate for future wireless communication in high-mobility scenarios. In addition to the superior communication performance, OTFS is also a natural choice for radar sensing since the primary parameters (range and velocity of targets) in radar signal processing can be inferred directly from the delay and Doppler shifts. Though there are several works on OTFS radar sensing, most of them consider the integer parameter estimation only, while the delay and Doppler shifts are usually fractional in the real world. In this paper, we propose a two-step method to estimate the fractional delay and Doppler shifts. We first perform the two-dimensional (2D) correlation between the received and transmitted DD domain symbols to obtain the integer parts of the parameters. Then a difference-based method is implemented to estimate the fractional parts of delay and Doppler indices. Meanwhile, we implement a target detection method based on a generalized likelihood ratio test since the number of potential targets in the sensing scenario is usually unknown. The simulation results show that the proposed method can obtain the delay and Doppler shifts accurately and get the number of sensing targets with a high detection probability.

Fractional Delay and Doppler Estimation for OTFS Based ISAC Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation based single input single output (SISO) radar for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) where the transmitter sends OTFS frames and the radar receiver co-located with the transmitter leverages the transmit frame along with the reflected signal for the estimation of the target range and velocity. We present a novel radar channel model that is capable of capturing both integer as well as fractional delays and Doppler shifts accounted for by the targets in the channel. A two-step modified orthogonal matching pursuit with fractional refinement (OMPFR) algorithm is also proposed to estimate the delays and Doppler shifts that can be non-integer multiples of the system delay and Doppler resolutions respectively. We show that our algorithm has much lower complexity than the traditional orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm if used in estimating the fractional delays and Dopplers, as the latter requires a colossal dictionary matrix. Target profiles and the root mean square error (RMSE) plots for range and velocity estimates validate the effectiveness of the proposed OMPFR algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) transmission framework based on the spatially spread orthogonal time frequency space (SS-OTFS) modulation by considering the fact that communication channel strengths cannot be directly obtained from radar sensing. We first propose the concept of SS-OTFS modulation, where the key novelty is the angular domain discretization enabled by the spatial spreading/de-spreading. This discretization gives rise to simple and insightful effective models for both radar sensing and communication, which results in simplified designs for the related estimation and detection problems. In particular, we design simple beam tracking, angle estimation, and power allocation schemes for radar sensing, by utilizing the special structure of the effective radar sensing matrix. Meanwhile, we provide a detailed analysis on the pair-wise error probability (PEP) for communication, which unveils the key conditions for both precoding and power allocation designs for communication. Based on those conditions, we design a symbol-wise precoding scheme for communication based only on the delay, Doppler, and angle estimates from radar sensing, without the a priori knowledge of the communication channel fading coefficients, and also propose a suitable power allocation. Furthermore, we notice that radar sensing and communication requires different power allocations. Therefore, we discuss the performances of both the radar sensing and communication with different power allocations and show that the power allocation should be designed leaning towards radar sensing in practical scenarios. The effectiveness of the proposed ISAC transmission framework is verified by our numerical results, which also agree with our analysis and discussions.
Radar Sensing via OTFS Signaling: A Delay Doppler Signal Processing Perspective

Abstract:The recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation multiplexes data symbols in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. Since the range and velocity, which can be derived from the delay and Doppler shifts, are the parameters of interest for radar sensing, it is natural to consider implementing DD signal processing for radar sensing. In this paper, we investigate the potential connections between the OTFS and DD domain radar signal processing. Our analysis shows that the range-Doppler matrix computing process in radar sensing is exactly the demodulation of OTFS with a rectangular pulse shaping filter. Furthermore, we propose a two-dimensional (2D) correlation-based algorithm to estimate the fractional delay and Doppler parameters for radar sensing. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can efficiently obtain the delay and Doppler shifts associated with multiple targets.

Abstract:Orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) offers significant advantages among various emerging modulation techniques by modulating the information in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, making it promising for both communications and radar sensing applications. However, in multi-target detection scenarios, the masking effect poses challenges and diminishes the effectiveness of traditional constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detectors. Addressing this challenge and leveraging the capabilities of OTFS signaling, this paper proposes a novel deep-learning approach for radar target detection via OTFS. Our method involves preprocessing received symbols using two-dimensional cross-correlations, which are then adapted to the input of a neural network. Leveraging previously established learning weights, the deep neural network identifies potential target regions and assesses the likelihood of target presence, effectively controlling false alarm probabilities through adaptive thresholds. Through simulation experiments, we demonstrate the superiority of the method over traditional methods, particularly in scenarios with multiple targets and unknown signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs).

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a promising candidate for supporting reliable information transmission in high-mobility vehicular networks. In this paper, we consider the employment of the integrated (radar) sensing and communication (ISAC) technique for assisting OTFS transmission in both uplink and downlink vehicular communication systems. Benefiting from the OTFS-ISAC signals, the roadside unit (RSU) is capable of simultaneously transmitting downlink information to the vehicles and estimating the sensing parameters of vehicles, e.g., locations and speeds, based on the reflected echoes. Then, relying on the estimated kinematic parameters of vehicles, the RSU can construct the topology of the vehicular network that enables the prediction of the vehicle states in the following time instant. Consequently, the RSU can effectively formulate the transmit downlink beamformers according to the predicted parameters to counteract the channel adversity such that the vehicles can directly detect the information without the need of performing channel estimation. As for the uplink transmission, the RSU can infer the delays and Dopplers associated with different channel paths based on the aforementioned dynamic topology of the vehicular network. Thus, inserting guard space as in conventional methods are not needed for uplink channel estimation which removes the required training overhead. Finally, an efficient uplink detector is proposed by taking into account the channel estimation uncertainty. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate the benefits of the proposed ISAC-assisted OTFS transmission scheme.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a promising technique for the next-generation communications in high-mobility scenarios. However, in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain, the received signals suffer from a decrease in power due to the non-coherent superposition of all symbols transmitted through wireless channels. To address this issue, this paper proposes the incorporation of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to assist the transmission for the OTFS systems, and jointly designs the OTFS frame structure and IRS phase shifts to achieve a coherent combination of the received signals. To address the problem of outdated channel state information in high-mobility systems, we propose a location-aided channel estimation strategy at the IRS. Additionally, to mitigate the adverse effects of the fractional Doppler shifts, a delay and shifted-Doppler domain-based channel estimation method is designed at the base station. By utilizing the well-designed OTFS frame structure and IRS phase shifts, we propose a low-complexity iterative interference cancellation (IIC) detector, and analyze the lower bound for its symbol error probability. To provide a clear understanding for the process of the considered systems, we describe a two-stage transmission protocol. Finally, the numerical results are provided to evaluate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed estimation methods and IIC detector.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is viewed as a promising technique to realizing integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) as the physical parameters can be directly extracted through the delay Doppler domain channel. In this paper, we investigate the sensing ability of OTFS signals to assist vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. Specifically, we propose a new scheme to alternatively sense wide beam and narrow beam to vehicles, where the wide beam is adopted to estimate and refine the sensed parameters with multiple echoes. Then, the RSU can formulate the narrow beam according to the predicted parameters for effective communication. Finally, we show the performance of our method, which attains effective communications.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising alternative to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in high-mobility beyond 5G communications. In this paper, we consider the problem of radar sensing with OTFS joint radar-communications waveform and derive a novel OTFS radar signal model by explicitly taking into account the intersymbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) effects. On the basis of the new model, we show how ISI and ICI phenomena can be turned into an advantage to surpass the maximum unambiguous detection limits in range and velocity, arising in existing OFDM and OTFS radar systems. Moreover, we design a generalized likelihood ratio test based detector/estimator that can embrace ISI and ICI effects. Simulation results illustrate the potential of embracing ISI/ICI and demonstrate its superior detection and estimation performance over conventional baselines.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose an Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) waveform design method based on the fusion of Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) and Faster-Than-Nyquist (FTN). The objective is to maximize the communication data transmission rate while minimizing the sensing performance impact on the target parameter estimation. We first map the FTN symbols to OTFS waveform time domain for realizing symbol spacing compression and transmit them in time-varying channels. Then, an equalizer based on the Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) algorithm is used to eliminate the interference generated by the FTN. Simulation results show taking into account the system bit-error rate, the proposed method achieves an increase in the throughput as well as an improvement in the distance and velocity estimation of the target compared to the existing methods.

Abstract:In this work, we study sensing-aided uplink transmission in an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) vehicular network with the use of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. To exploit sensing parameters for improving uplink communications, the parameters must be first associated with the transmitters, which is a challenging task. We propose a scheme that jointly conducts parameter association, channel estimation and signal detection by formulating it as a constrained bilinear recovery problem. Then we develop a message passing algorithm to solve the problem, leveraging the bilinear unitary approximate message passing (Bi-UAMP) algorithm. Numerical results validate the proposed scheme, which show that relevant performance bounds can be closely approached.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a two-dimensional modulation scheme realized in the delay-Doppler domain, which targets the robust wireless transmissions in high-mobility environments. In such scenarios, OTFS signal suffers from multipath channel with continuous Doppler spread, which results in significant inter-symbol interference and inter-Doppler interference (IDI). In this article, we analyze the interference generation mechanism, and compare statistical distributions of the IDI in two typical cases, i.e., limited-Doppler-shift channel and continuous-Doppler-spread channel (CoDSC). Focusing on the OTFS signal transmission over the CoDSC, our study firstly indicates that the widespread IDI incurs a computational burden for the element-wise detector like the message passing in the state-of-the-art works. Addressing this challenge, we propose a block-wise OTFS receiver by exploiting the structure and characteristics of the OTFS transmission matrix. In the receiver, we deliberately design an iteration strategy among the least squares minimum residual based channel equalizer, reliability-based symbol detector and interference eliminator, which can realize fast convergence by leveraging the sparsity of channel matrix. The simulations demonstrate that, in the CoDSC, the proposed scheme achieves much less detection error, and meanwhile reduces the computational complexity by an order of magnitude, compared with the state-of-the-art OTFS receivers.

Abstract:This article presents an approach for joint radar sensing and communications based on the orthogonal time–frequency space (OTFS) modulation, applied to a moving target detection during regular digital wireless transmission (TX). Most communication systems estimate and correct channel influence using specially designed reference signals or pilots. Pilots are usually known to the receiver before the TX, and the receiver estimates the channel impulse response (CIR) by analyzing the input (pilots) and output of the channel. Because of the Doppler effect, the movement of reflection sources (or targets in radar terminology) in multipath channels causes oscillations of CIR coefficients. Based on the frequency analysis of time-varying CIR, one can extract the distances and velocities of moving targets when the data is transmitted through the wireless channel. This article describes the application of OTFS with random pilots using both simulations and real-life field tests. It is shown that applied time-varying CIR estimation based on random pilot signals overcomes the OTFS with zero padding during vehicle velocity estimation in very noisy conditions. The proposed OTFS-based sensing method with the CIR-based channel estimation and vehicle detection is experimentally compared with the cross-ambiguity function (CAF) approach commonly used in radars. A thorough analysis shows that the proposed CIR-based approach outperforms the classical CAF-based radar processing in terms of target detection. Finally, the proposed integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) concept, including bit TX, is experimentally verified.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is a recently proposed multi-carrier transmission scheme, which innovatively multiplexes the information symbols in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain instead of the conventional time-frequency (TF) domain. The DD domain symbol multiplexing gives rise to a direct interaction between the DD domain information symbols and DD domain channel responses, which are usually quasi-static, compact, separable, and potentially sparse. Therefore, OTFS modulation enjoys appealing advantages over the conventional orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation for wireless communications. In this thesis, we investigate the related subjects of OTFS modulation for wireless communications, specifically focusing on its signal detection, performance analysis, and applications. These important aspects are discussed based on the review of the state-of-the-art and a detailed derivation of OTFS modulation from the discrete Zak transform (DZT). Finally, a summary of future research directions on OTFS modulation are also provided.

DFT-Spread Orthogonal Time Frequency Space System with Superimposed Pilots for Terahertz Integrated Sensing and Communication

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a promising interdisciplinary technology that realizes simultaneously transmitting Terabit-per-second (Tbps) and millimeter-level accurate environment or human activity sensing. However, both communication performance and sensing accuracy are influenced by the Doppler effects, which are especially severe in the THz band. Moreover, peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) degrades the THz power amplifier (PA) efficiency. In this paper, a discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal time frequency space (DFT-s-OTFS) system with superimposed pilots is proposed to improve the robustness to Doppler effects and reduce PAPR for THz ISAC. Then, a two-phase sensing parameter estimation algorithm is developed to integrate sensing functionality into the DFT-s-OTFS waveform. Meanwhile, a low-complexity iterative channel estimation and data detection method with a conjugate gradient based equalizer is proposed to recover the data symbols of DFT-s-OTFS. The proposed DFT-s-OTFS waveform can improve the PA efficiency by 10% on average compared to OTFS. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed two-phase sensing estimation algorithm for THz DFT-s-OTFS systems is able to realize millimeter-level range estimation accuracy and decimeter-per-second-level velocity estimation accuracy. Moreover, the effectiveness of the iterative method for data detection aided by superimposed pilots in DFT-s-OTFS systems is validated by the simulations and the bit error rate performance is not degraded by the Doppler effects.

Abstract:Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a framework for communication and active sensing that processes signals in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. This article explores three key features of the OTFS framework, and explains their value to applications. The first feature is a compact and sparse DD domain parameterization of the wireless channel, where the parameters map directly to physical attributes of the reflectors that comprise the scattering environment, and as a consequence these parameters evolve predictably. The second feature is a novel waveform/modulation technique, matched to the DD channel model, that embeds information symbols in the DD domain. The relation between channel inputs and outputs is localized, non-fading, and predictable, even in the presence of significant delay and Doppler spread, and as a consequence the channel can be efficiently acquired and equalized. By avoiding fading, the post equalization signal to noise ratio remains constant across all information symbols in a packet, so that bit error performance is superior to contemporary multicarrier waveforms. Further, the OTFS carrier waveform is a localized pulse in the DD domain, making it possible to separate reflectors along both delay and Doppler simultaneously, and to achieve a high-resolution DD radar image of the environment. In other words, the DD parameterization provides a common mathematical framework for communication and radar. This is the third feature of the OTFS framework, and it is ideally suited to intelligent transportation systems involving self-driving cars and unmanned ground/aerial vehicles, which are self/network controlled. The OTFS waveform is able to support stable and superior performance over a wide range of user speeds. In the emerging 6G systems and standards, it is ideally suited to support mobility-on-demand envisaged in next generation cellular and WiFi systems, as well as high-mobility use cases. Finally, the compactness and predictability of the OTFS input–output relation makes it a natural fit for machine learning and AI algorithms designed for the intelligent nonmyopic management of control plane resources in future mobile networks.

Abstract:The recently proposed orthogonal time–frequency–space (OTFS) modulation technique was shown to provide significant error performance advantages over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) over delay-Doppler channels. In this paper, we first derive the explicit input–output relation describing OTFS modulation and demodulation (mod/demod). We then analyze the cases of: 1) ideal pulse-shaping waveforms that satisfy the bi-orthogonality conditions and 2) rectangular waveforms which do not. We show that while only inter-Doppler interference (IDI) is present in the former case, additional inter-carrier interference (ICI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI) occur in the latter case. We next characterize the interferences and develop a novel low-complexity yet efficient message passing (MP) algorithm for joint interference cancellation (IC) and symbol detection. While ICI and ISI are eliminated through appropriate phase shifting, IDI can be mitigated by adapting the MP algorithm to account for only the largest interference terms. The MP algorithm can effectively compensate for a wide range of channel Doppler spreads. Our results indicate that OTFS using practical rectangular waveforms can achieve the performance of OTFS using ideal but non-realizable pulse-shaping waveforms. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the superior error performance gains of the proposed uncoded OTFS schemes over OFDM under various channel conditions.
