Abstract:Pesticides are often considered a suitable solution for controlling pests. However, the use of chemicals is very costly, and their residues have always the potential to pollute soil, air, and ground water and also pose significant risks to the natural ecosystems and nontarget organisms. Considering all these, irradiation could offer substantial and charming option for eliminating the export commodity fumigation uses for the undesirable effects of chemicals. Gamma rays, high-energy electrons, and X-rays are among the ionizing radiation sources utilized practically in sterile insect releasing programs using “self-contained” and “non-self-contained or panoramic” irradiators. When applying radiation sources, dosimetry should be adjusted to ensure quarantine security for large groups of insect pests. Because of growing concerns related to health problems and environmental pollutions, chemical sanitizing treatments are faced with a lot of regulatory restrictions, so irradiation reveals best choice for this purpose. The sterile insect technique (SIT) may have indispensable consideration for integrated pest management (IPM) of many important insect pests, including agricultural, veterinary, and medicinal importance. On the other hand, to overcome the obstacles of SIT treatments, genetic engineering techniques were supposed to ease the devel‐ opment of transgenic insects for sustainable tactics to control pest populations. Thus, genetic means should be an integral part of SIT treatments in controlling important pest populations.
Anomaly Detection for Sensor Signals Utilizing Deep Learning Autoencoder-Based Neural Networks

Abstract:Anomaly detection is a significant task in sensors’ signal processing since interpreting an abnormal signal can lead to making a high-risk decision in terms of sensors’ applications. Deep learning algorithms are effective tools for anomaly detection due to their capability to address imbalanced datasets. In this study, we took a semi-supervised learning approach, utilizing normal data for training the deep learning neural networks, in order to address the diverse and unknown features of anomalies. We developed autoencoder-based prediction models to automatically detect anomalous data recorded by three electrochemical aptasensors, with variations in the signals’ lengths for particular concentrations, analytes, and bioreceptors. Prediction models employed autoencoder networks and the kernel density estimation (KDE) method for finding the threshold to detect anomalies. Moreover, the autoencoder networks were vanilla, unidirectional long short-term memory (ULSTM), and bidirectional LSTM (BLSTM) autoencoders for the training stage of the prediction models. However, the decision-making was based on the result of these three networks and the integration of vanilla and LSTM networks’ results. The accuracy as a performance metric of anomaly prediction models showed that the performance of vanilla and integrated models were comparable, while the LSTM-based autoencoder models showed the least accuracy. Considering the integrated model of ULSTM and vanilla autoencoder, the accuracy for the dataset with the lengthier signals was approximately 80%, while it was 65% and 40% for the other datasets. The lowest accuracy belonged to the dataset with the least normal data in its dataset. These results demonstrate that the proposed vanilla and integrated models can automatically detect abnormal data when there is sufficient normal data for training the models.

Abstract:This work presents the use of an embedded AI model in portable electrochemical sensing systems to discriminate between the interference of uric acid and ascorbic acid in neurotransmitter detection. The model reaches an overall accuracy of 98.1% for a 32‐bit float point unit and 96.01% after 8‐bit quantization, with the usage of 4.55% of the custom‐made potentiostat memory. Two significant issues in biosensors that can't be solved by conventional analytical methods are selectivity among likely biological interfering molecules and background noise in clinical samples. The application of embedded machine learning in the removal of background interference, which is extremely common in complex matrix solutions such as cerebrospinal fluid, is still unexplored. The implementation of machine learning into devices and sensors can enhance their reliability to discriminate responses. In addition, implementing these models into portable devices can further improve the usage of point‐of‐care devices, continuous monitoring, and viral mutation assessments. Herein, the requirements to implement an embedded AI model (TinyML) into low‐power portable systems and its use in the electrochemical field are presented. The application of TinyML to discriminate between interference of uric acid and ascorbic acid, both well‐known abundant electrochemically active species, in neurotransmitter detection, is explored, reaching overall accuracy of 98.1% for 32‐bit float point unit and 96.01% after 8‐bit quantization, with the usage of 4.55% of the custom‐made potentiostat memory. The model can be improved simply by having the trade‐off between memory and accuracy. The research suggests that TinyML can be a key component in future medical devices, allowing data processing in real time and with increasing reliability.

Abstract:False results and time delay are longstanding challenges in biosensing. While classification models and deep learning may provide new opportunities for improving biosensor performance, such as measurement confidence and speed, it remains a challenge to ensure that predictions are explainable and consistent with domain knowledge. Here, we show that consistency of deep learning classification model predictions with domain knowledge in biosensing can be achieved by cost function supervision and enables rapid and accurate biosensing using the biosensor dynamic response. The impact and utility of the methodology were validated by rapid and accurate quantification of microRNA (let-7a) across the nanomolar (nM) to femtomolar (fM) concentration range using the dynamic response of cantilever biosensors. Data augmentation and cost function supervision based on the consistency of model predictions and experimental observations with the theory of surface-based biosensors improved the F1 score, precision, and recall of a recurrent neural network (RNN) classifier by an average of 13.8%. The theory-guided RNN (TGRNN) classifier enabled quantification of target analyte concentration and false results with an average prediction accuracy, precision, and recall of 98.5% using the initial transient or entire dynamic response, which is indicative of high prediction accuracy and low probability of false-negative and false-positive results. Classification scores were used to establish new relationships among biosensor performance characteristics (e.g., measurement confidence) and design parameters (e.g., inputs and hyperparameters of classification models and data acquisition parameters) that may be used for characterizing biosensor performance.

Abstract:Recently, researchers are exploring machine learning (ML) algorithms as post-hoc analysis tools to improve performances of electrochemical biosensors. Reported results are promising, yet comprehensive study on optimal methods for model development is still lacking. For improved efficiency, accuracy, and robustness, it is essential to optimise the relationships between feature extraction techniques and choice of training algorithms. Herein, this paper presents a comparative study between different feature extractions methods, namely principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminative analysis (LDA), fast Fourier transform (FFT) ,and discrete wavelet transform (DWT), to compress and extract significant components from differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) datasets. Support vector regression (SVR) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) models were developed, and their performances were compared with conventional post-analysis methods. The best performing combination for DPV dataset was MLP with DWT, achieving an R2 of 0.995, and for EIS dataset was MLP with PCA, achieving an R2 of 0.960, on test set, respectively. The developed models had achieved an average of 0.61% improvement for real sample recovery tests. The presented approaches demonstrated the capabilities of optimised ML models to automate post hoc analysis for more robust outcomes, while eliminating tedium of post-analysis for end users.

Abstract:The electrochemical biosensors are a class of biosensors which convert biological information such as analyte concentration that is a biological recognition element (biochemical receptor) into current or voltage. Electrochemical biosensors depict propitious diagnostic technology which can detect biomarkers in body fluids such as sweat, blood, feces, or urine. Combinations of suitable immobilization techniques with effective transducers give rise to an efficient biosensor. They have been employed in the food industry, medical sciences, defense, studying plant biology, etc. While sensing complex structures and entities, a large data is obtained, and it becomes difficult to manually interpret all the data. Machine learning helps in interpreting large sensing data. In the case of biosensors, the presence of impurity affects the performance of the sensor and machine learning helps in removing signals obtained from the contaminants to obtain a high sensitivity. In this review, we discuss different types of biosensors along with their applications and the benefits of machine learning. This is followed by a discussion on the challenges, missing gaps in the knowledge, and solutions in the field of electrochemical biosensors. This review aims to serve as a valuable resource for scientists and engineers entering the interdisciplinary field of electrochemical biosensors. Furthermore, this review provides insight into the type of electrochemical biosensors, their applications, the importance of machine learning (ML) in biosensing, and challenges and future outlook.

Abstract:In recent years, the application of machine learning for virtual sensing has revolutionized the monitoring and management of information. In particular, electrochemical sensors generate large amounts of data, allowing the application of complex machine learning/AI models able to (1) reproduce the measured data and (2) predict and manage faults in the measuring sensor. In this work, data-driven models based on an autoregressive model and an artificial neural network have been identified and used to (i) evaluate sensor redundancy and (ii) predict and manage faults in the context of electrochemical sensors for the measurement of ethanol. The approach shows encouraging results in terms of both performance and sensitivity analyses, allowing for the reconstruction of the values measured by two sensors in a series of six sensors with different dopant levels and to reproduce their values after a fault.

HIV sero-prevalence among pregnant women in a resource constrained setting, South East Nigeria.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION HIV infection and AIDS is a public health problem worldwide, particularly affecting the populace in resource constrained settings like in sub-Saharan Africa. Women of reproductive age are most affected and infected with the disease. METHODOLOGY A descriptive study of pregnant women presenting for the first time at the obstetrics booking clinic of ESUTTH, Parklane from 1st April, 2009 to 31st March, 2010. Socio-demographic characteristics, sexual behavior, pregnancy history and STI related symptoms were obtained using already prepared proforma. HIV Screening test was conducted in a serial two step approach using Determine HIV test kits and Stat- Pak HIV kits after obtaining an informed consent. Discordant results were subjected to Western blot for confirmation. Data were entered and analyzed using Epi-info statistical software. P Value < 0.05 were assessed as statistically significant at 95% confidence interval. RESULT A total of 1306 women were recruited, 66 women were HIV positive, giving a prevalence rate of 5.1%. Their mean age was 28.79 +/- 5.06 years. Majority of them were married (9%). The mean gestational age at booking was 26.2 +/- 6.8 weeks. Alcohol intake, history of 3 or more sexual partner in the last 5 years, abnormal vaginal discharge in the last 12 months, history of genital ulcer in last 12 month, had a statistically significant association with prevalence of HIV infection (p value < 0.005). CONCLUSION HIV infection prevalence rate in among antenatal attendants in Enugu is still high. A multi-sectoral approach is required for effective prevention and control of the disease to ensure achievement of Millennium development Goals 5&6.

Abstract:Electrochemical sensor arrays have shown potential for fast and untargeted chemical analysis of multi-component media, enabling simultaneous quantification of multiple analytes and estimation of liquid properties that could correlate with human sensory perception. In particular, potentiometric electronic tongues (e-tongues) have been explored as promising alternative tools for chemical analysis in various applications, ranging from traceability of goods to characterization of food products for quality control and innovation processes. The reduced complexity of non-selective sensor fabrication and the ease of potentiometric transduction make these devices suitable for portable and decentralized chemical analysis. However, the interpretation of the sensor array response has always been a challenge due to the inherent cross-sensitivity of the sensing materials and the corresponding combinatorial signals arising upon sensor interaction with a liquid. Machine learning can help recognizing and mapping signal patterns and various data processing, unsupervised and supervised techniques have been proposed to calibrate e-tongue devices. These methods usually require exposing the sensor array to a set of liquids with known properties that serve as training base to build a calibration model. Therefore, the quality and quantity of tests is crucial to boost sensor performances. Nevertheless, performing an extensive number of measurements could be extremely time-consuming and results to be tedious to achieve in practice for certain use-cases. In this context, advances in deep learning and machine learning models have shown potential to accelerate chemical and materials discovery when combined with high-throughput experimentation, highlighting the benefits of AI-assisted research practices. Moreover, the recent advent of multi-domain and multi-task models trained by self-supervision, so-called foundation models, bears also promises for extending learnt representations across multiple fields, thus counteracting the reduced data availability in certain applications, and benefiting from information exchange across domains. Thus, in the present contribution we propose extending this approach to data-driven chemical sensors. More specifically, we leverage transfer learning based on fingerprints pretrained in other domains to model new instrument/sensor data representations. Herein, we demonstrate how the output of a model system comprising an integrated electrochemical sensor array for analysis of multi-component liquids can be encoded as image representations to leverage existing deep learning computer vision models pretrained on large collections of image data. The models effectively extract features from these representations and feed specific model heads to perform downstream tasks. Firstly, an integrated sensor array comprising 16 polymeric sensors was fabricated through electrodeposition on conventional electroless nickel immersion gold (ENIG) electrodes. The conductive polymers (PEDOT, PPy, PANI and PAPBA) were synthesized by chronoamperometry or cyclic voltammetry in a three-electrode configuration and were enriched with doping agents for enhanced sensitivity. 15 linearly independent differential voltages between these polymeric sensors were measured during the transition of the sensor array from a reference solution to a test solution, thereby obviating the need for a conventional reference electrode. Indeed, the use of low-selective polymeric sensors for potentiometric measurements does not necessarily require integration of reference electrodes, which are known to be unpractical for remote sensing applications. Training data were obtained by alternatively immersing the sensor array in reference (120 s) and test (60 s) solutions continuously using an automated test rig. The 15 raw time-series data from the sensor array were processed and concatenated to yield a spectral response, which was smoothed by means of the moving average technique and standardized using Standard Normal Variate (SNV). The obtained spectra were encoded into image representations using the Gramian Angular Summation Field transformation. Off-the-shelf features were generated leveraging pretrained neural networks developed to classify natural images and applied to the “sensor images”. Dimensionality reduction through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) yielded a set of features that could then be used to train machine learning classifiers and regressors. The pipeline was applied to generate visual fingerprints of multiple beverages, proving full discrimination of liquid types (mineral waters, coffees, fruit juices, soft beverages and wines). On a model dataset comprising 11 Italian red wines, it was demonstrated that image fingerprints of samples enabled class identification with a mean accuracy ~95%. The results demonstrate the successful creation of a new representation of the chemical sensing space which achieves comparable performance as domain-specific hand-crafted feature selection. The present contribution represents an example of integration of data processing techniques and publicly available libraries/models to support transfer of methodologies across domains. We believe this approach could be disruptive in the field of electrochemical sensor arrays, especially for processing e-tongues and e-noses response and enhancing capabilities of data-driven chemical sensors. Abstract:Dysregulations in metabolic and physiological cellular processes are generally accompanied by changes in concentration profiles of multiple biomarkers. Measuring dynamic changes in concentrations of several affected biomarkers can enhance our comprehension of the underlying disease pathophysiology and/or mechanisms of cytotoxicity. Most analytical detection techniques require samples to be obtained at pre-defined times for offline analysis. However, the inadequate temporal resolution of these methods can lead to key biological events that occur at shorter timescales, being overlooked. Electrochemical biosensors are relatively simple, cost-effective detection techniques that have been used extensively for continuous analyte monitoring, and more recently, for sensing multiple analytes. We describe the design and functionality of a novel electrochemical detection platform, comprising a screen-printed Pt electrode array, a microfluidic chip, and an automated pump and valve system, capable of quantitatively detecting up to eight analytes. As a proof of concept, we show the simultaneous, sensitive, and selective amperometric detection of four essential biomarkers- glucose, lactate, glutamate, and acetylcholine, in real time. We also demonstrate the biological application of this platform by continuously monitoring exocytotic glutamate release from human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neuronal cultures over time. Excessive accumulation of glutamate in the synaptic cleft leads to prolonged stimulation of glutamate receptors on neurons, triggering a cascade of neurotoxic events that ultimately results in loss of neuronal function and cell death. The results suggest that our multianalyte electrochemical sensor platform can be coupled with more complex biological systems such as in vitro organotypic models, for the accurate monitoring of biomarker changes during adverse events like acute neurotoxicity and microbial infection.

Abstract:As a major cause of deaths in developed countries, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a steadily growing burden for health systems. In particular, early and rapid detection of CVD is important for on time appropriate therapy so as to reduce the mortality rate. Aptamers, known as single-stranded DNA/RNA or oligonucleotides containing receptors and/or catalytic properties, have been widely employed in biodetection platforms due to their beneficial properties. Like antibodies, aptamers have served as artificial target receptors in affinity biosensors. Currently, advanced biosensors with improved sensitivity and specificity are fabricated by the synergistic combination of aptamers and diverse nanomaterials. Herein, we review the current development and applications of nanomaterial-based aptasensors for the recognition of CVD biomarkers with special emphasis on electrochemical and optical technologies. The performance of aptasensors has been assessed further in terms of key quality assurance metrics along with discussions on recent technologies developed for the amplification of signals with enhanced portability.

Abstract:The general mechanism of chemical sensing is based on molecular recognition linked to different transduction strategies based on electrochemical, optical, gravimetric or thermal effects that can convert the signal to digital information. Electrochemical sensors support accurate, fast, and inexpensive analytical methods with the advantages of being easily embedded and integrated into electronics, and having the greatest potential impact in the areas of healthcare, environmental monitoring (e.g. electronic noses), food packaging and many other applications (E. Bakker and Y. Qin, Anal. Chem., 2006, 78, 3965). Nanoscale electrochemical biosensors offer a new scope and opportunity in analytical chemistry. The reduction in the size of electrochemical biosensors to nanoscale dimensions expands their analytical capability, allowing the exploration of nanoscopic domains, measurements of local concentration profiles, detection in microfluidic systems and in vivo monitoring of neurochemical events by detection of stimulated dopamine release (R. Kennedy, L. Huang, M. Atkinson and P. Dush, Anal. Chem., 1993, 65, 1882). This article reviews both state of art developments in electrochemical nanosensing, and the industrial outlook.

A Machine Learning-based approach for Simultaneous Electrochemical Detection of Interfering Analytes

Abstract:Electrochemical biosensors can be used to detect analytes of importance precisely. These sensors generate rapid and accurate electrical signals that reveal the presence and concentration of the targeted analyte. Detecting multiple analytes simultaneously with an electrochemical biosensor is advantageous. It provides cost and time efficiency, multiplexing capability, and flexibility, making it valuable in diverse applications such as medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and industrial processes. However, simultaneous detection of analytes may suffer from the problem of interference. The interference effect causes the signal of an analyte at a particular concentration to deviate from the expected one. We observe a similar effect in the simultaneous detection of Folic Acid and Uric Acid using a nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensor. To address this effect, we propose a machine learning (ML) approach. ML algorithms handle complex interactions by autonomously identifying patterns, dependencies, and nonlinear relationships within data, enabling it to make predictions and decisions in intricate and dynamic scenarios. Our approach can be generalised to any two analytes showing interference and would scale well to interference between multiple analytes. We test several regression algorithms and compare their performance to the standard calibration plot method. As compared to the standard method, our approach shows a 4.49 μM decrease in concentration prediction error.

Abstract:Chemometrics play a critical role in biosensors-based detection, analysis, and diagnosis. Nowadays, as a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) have achieved impressive advances. However, novel advanced ML methods, especially deep learning, which is famous for image analysis, facial recognition, and speech recognition, has remained relatively elusive to the biosensor community. Herein, how ML can be beneficial to biosensors is systematically discussed. The advantages and drawbacks of most popular ML algorithms are summarized on the basis of sensing data analysis. Specially, deep learning methods such as convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) are emphasized. Diverse ML-assisted electrochemical biosensors, wearable electronics, SERS and other spectra-based biosensors, fluorescence biosensors and colorimetric biosensors are comprehensively discussed. Furthermore, biosensor networks and multibiosensor data fusion are introduced. This review will nicely bridge ML with biosensors, and greatly expand chemometrics for detection, analysis, and diagnosis.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Using a cross-section of 55,970 public and private firms, we document that agency costs increase as firms move from a single owner/single manager ownership structure to more complicated ownership structures. Within each ownership structure, agency costs are significantly higher when firms are not managed by owners. We find that bank monitoring has a significant positive impact on the performance of private firms. We also show that agency costs are lower in firms with shared control of ownership. Further, we find that horizontal agency costs are lower in firms where control is contestable.

Abstract:Neuromorphic computing is an exciting and rapidly growing field that aims to create computing systems that can replicate the complex and dynamic behavior of the human–brain. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have emerged as a promising tool for developing such systems due to their unique bioelectronic properties. In this article, we present a novel approach for signal classification using an OECT array, which exhibits multifunctional bioelectronic functionality similar to neurons and synapses linked through a global medium. Our approach takes advantage of the intrinsic device variabilities of OECTs to create a reservoir network with variable neuron-time constants and synaptic strengths. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by classifying surface-electromyogram (s-EMG) signals into three hand gesture categories. The OECT array performs efficient signal acquisition by feeding signals through multiple gates and measuring the response to a group of OECTs with a global liquid medium. We compare the performance of our approach with and without projecting the input on OECTs and observe a significant increase in classification accuracy from 40% to 68%. We also examined how the classification performance is affected by different selection strategies and numbers of OECTs used. Finally, we developed a spiking neural network-based simulation that mimics the OECTs array and found that OECT-based classification is comparable to the spiking neural network-based approach. Our work paves the way for the next generation of low-power, real-time, and intelligent biomedical sensing systems.

Abstract:Pattern recognition using the nanoparticle colorimetric sensor arrays is a powerful analytical tool for detection and discrimination of analytes. In this study, the unmodified silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with different diameters were employed for discrimination of three opioid drugs methadone, morphine, and tramadol based on the difference in the reaction kinetics between the drug and AgNPs. Discrete wavelet transform with various mother wavelets was used to preprocess the obtained big data and reduce their dimensionality, and then neural network-based supervised pattern recognition methods like Counter Propagation Artificial Neural Networks (CPANN), Supervised Kohonen Networks (SKN), and XY-fused (X-YF) networks were used for discrimination after optimizing the network parameters with genetic algorithm. The best pattern recognition performance was achieved using the SKN and Daubechies (Db) mother wavelet with an accuracy of 98% in discrimination of the analytes in spiked real serum samples.

Deep Learning-based Kinetic Analysis in Paper-based Analytical Cartridges Integrated with Field-effect Transistors

Abstract:This study explores the fusion of a field-effect transistor (FET), a paper-based analytical cartridge, and the computational power of deep learning (DL) for quantitative biosensing via kinetic analyses. The FET sensors address the low sensitivity challenge observed in paper analytical devices, enabling electrical measurements with kinetic data. The paper-based cartridge eliminates the need for surface chemistry required in FET sensors, ensuring economical operation (cost < $0.15/test). The DL analysis mitigates chronic challenges of FET biosensors such as sample matrix interference, by leveraging kinetic data from target-specific bioreactions. In our proof-of-concept demonstration, our DL-based analyses showcased a coefficient of variation of < 6.46% and a decent concentration measurement correlation with an r2 value of > 0.976 for cholesterol testing when blindly compared to results obtained from a CLIA-certified clinical laboratory. These integrated technologies can create a new generation of FET-based biosensors, potentially transforming point-of-care diagnostics and at-home testing through enhanced accessibility, ease-of-use, and accuracy.

Abstract:<p>Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is one of the most common methods in point-of-care testing, which is widely applied in some conditions for various applications. Image segmentation is an increasingly popular experimental paradigm to efficiently test the target area in LFIA. However, due to process pollution, and problems related to the experimental operation and irregular structure of the background of the reaction, currently available tools cannot be used to extract correct signals from these images, which affects the accuracy of detection. Machine learning has significantly improved modern biochemical analysis by pushing the limits of traditional techniques for the recognition and processing of images. In this paper, the U-Net, a variant of the convolutional neural network (CNN) is used for the quantitative analysis of LFIA images for the accurate quantification of single- and multi-target images. By graying, binarizing, and labeling different concentrations of test strips, the target area of LFIA images containing the T-/C-lines is extracted and obtained. Then it provides updated trends and directions for the development of LFIA technology. Several indicators are introduced to evaluate the proposed U-Net structure to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of its image processing capability. When the trained U-Net model was used to process images, the peak signal-to-noise ratio was 22.4 dB, significantly higher than prevalent methods in the area that have reported only a 4 dB improvement in the quality of the graphics. The intersection-over-union between samples also increased to above 93%. Our results show that the proposed method has significant potential for detecting a segmented target in an LFIA area, especially weak positive signals and multichannel detection. With other modifications, this deep learning method can be applied as a powerful tool to study rapid detection devices, systems, and biological images.</p>
