Abstract:The structural versatility of semiconducting gallium arsenide (GaAs) nanowires (NWs) provides an exciting direction for the engineering of their mechanical and dynamic properties. However, the dynamic behaviour of GaAs NWs remains unexplored. In this study, comprehensive in situ mechanical resonance tests were conducted to explore the dynamic behaviour of pristine and defective zinc blende GaAs NWs. The effects of stacking faults (SFs), amorphous shell, NW tapering and end-mass particles were investigated. The quality factors (QFs) of the GaAs NWs were found to be predominately governed by surface effects, which increased linearly with the volume to surface area ratio. Interestingly, SFs were found not to influence the QFs. To extract the mechanical properties, the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory was modified, to incorporate the core-shell model, NW tapering and end-mass particles. It was found that the core-shell model accurately predicts the mechanical properties of the pristine GaAs NWs, which exhibit significant stiffening at radii below 50 nm. Conversely, the mechanical properties of the defective NWs were influenced by the presence of SFs, causing a wide variance in the Young's modulus. Apart from establishing an understanding of the resonance behaviour of GaAs NWs, this research provides guidance for the design of NWs for their applications in dynamic nanomechanical devices with tailorable dynamic properties.

Abstract:Nanowires (NWs) have attracted intensive researches owing to the broad applications that arise from their remarkable properties. Over the last decade, immense numerical studies have been conducted for the numerical investigation of mechanical properties of NWs. Among these numerical simulations, the molecular dynamics (MD) plays a key role. Herein we present a brief review on the current state of the MD investigation of nanowires. Emphasis will be placed on the FCC metal NWs, especially the Cu NWs. MD investigations of perfect NWs' mechanical properties under different deformation conditions including tension, compression, torsion and bending are firstly revisited. Following in succession, the studies for defected NWs including the defects of twin boundaries (TBs) and pre-existing defects are discussed. The different deformation mechanism incurred by the presentation of defects is explored and discussed. This review reveals that the numerical simulation is an important tool to investigate the properties of NWs. However, the substantial gaps between the experimental measurements and MD results suggest the urgent need of multi-scale simulation technique.
Modified Beam Theories for Bending Properties of Nanowires Considering Surface/Intrinsic Effects and Axial Extension Effect

Abstract:Several studies of the surface effect on bending properties of a nanowire (NW) have been conducted. However, these analyses are mainly based on theoretical predictions, and there is seldom integration study in combination between theoretical predictions and simulation results. Thus, based on the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and different modified beam theories, a comprehensive theoretical and numerical study for bending properties of nanowires considering surface/intrinsic stress effects and axial extension effect is conducted in this work. The discussion begins from the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and Timoshenko beam theory augmented with surface effect. It is found that when the NW possesses a relatively small cross-sectional size, these two theories cannot accurately interpret the true surface effect. The incorporation of axial extension effect into Euler-Bernoulli beam theory provides a nonlinear solution that agrees with the nonlinear-elastic experimental and MD results. However, it is still found inaccurate when the NW cross-sectional size is relatively small. Such inaccuracy is also observed for the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory augmented with both contributions from surface effect and axial extension effect. A comprehensive model for completely considering influences from surface stress, intrinsic stress, and axial extension is then proposed, which leads to good agreement with MD simulation results. It is thus concluded that, for NWs with a relatively small cross-sectional size, a simple consideration of surface stress effect is inappropriate, and a comprehensive consideration of the intrinsic stress effect is required.
Atomistic Numerical Investigation of Single-crystal Copper Nanowire with Surface Defects

Abstract:Based on the embedded atom method (EAM), a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is performed to study the single-crystal copper nanowire with surface defects through tension. The tension simulations for nanowire without defect are first carried out under different temperatures, strain rates and time steps and then surface defect effects for nanowire are investigated. The stress-strain curves obtained by the MD simulations of various strain rates show a rate below 1 X 109 s-1 will exert less effect on the yield strength and yield point, and the Young's modulus is independent of strain rate. A time step below 5 fs is recommend for the atomic model during the MD simulation. It is observed that high temperature leads to low Young's modulus, as well as the yield strength. The surface defects on nanowires are systematically studied in considering different defect orientations. It is found that the surface defect serves as a dislocation source, and the yield strength shows 34.20% decrease with 45 surface defect. Both yield strength and yield point are significantly influenced by the surface defects, except the Young's modulus.

Abstract:Elastic properties of metal nanowires in a transverse electric field have been investigated using molecular dynamics simulations and classical electrostatics theory. The negative pressure on the surfaces stemming from the transverse electric field modifies the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of nanowires significantly. The simulation results reveal the decrease in Young’s modulus and the increase in Poisson’s ratio as a result of the negative pressure. With the increase of the applied voltage and decreasing the distance between the nanowire and the ground plane, the electromechanical coupling effect on elastic properties of nanowires becomes more remarkable. The relative change of elastic properties is also strongly dependent on the diameter of nanowires. The present results are useful in the design of nanoelectromechanical systems and the measurement of mechanical properties of one-dimensional nanostructures.
Comprehensive Atomistic Modeling of Copper Nanowires-Based Surface Connectors

Abstract:In this paper, we study the mechanical behavior of surface nanoconnectors that are developed using two contacting sets of patterned copper (Cu) nanowire (NW) arrays. Specifically, comprehensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are conducted to establish the mechanics and the mechanisms involved at the atomic level that govern the mechanical integrity and ultimately the functionality of the formed bonds. All MD simulations were conducted using the embedded-atom and the Lennard-Jones potentials. Two aspects of the work were accordingly examined. The first considers the effect of temperature and diameter of an isolated Cu-NW on its tensile and fracture strength, as this determines the static strength and durability of the surface connector. The second considers the effect of NW diameter, separation distance between the NWs, overlapping depths, and temperature on the tensile strength of the nanoconnector. The results reveal that the formed surface joint between two interacting NWs can resist up to 70 nN in tension at an overlapping depth of 50 angstrom. It also reveals that increasing the nanowire diameter, the bonding failure becomes more surface dominated with insignificant plastic deformation outside the interface contacting region. These findings are useful in designing advanced conductive adhesives with tenable performance. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Semiconducting piezoelectric nanowires (NWs) are promising candidates to develop highly efficient mechanical energy transducers made of biocompatible and non-critical materials. The increasing interest in mechanical energy harvesting makes the investigation of the competition between piezoelectricity, free carrier screening and depletion in semiconducting NWs essential. To date, this topic has been scarcely investigated because of the experimental challenges raised by the characterization of the direct piezoelectric effect in these nanostructures. Here we get rid of these limitations using the piezoresponse force microscopy technique in DataCube mode and measuring the effective piezoelectric coefficient through the converse piezoelectric effect. We demonstrate a sharp increase in the effective piezoelectric coefficient of vertically aligned ZnO NWs as their radius decreases. We also present a numerical model which quantitatively explains this behavior by taking into account both the dopants and the surface traps. These results have a strong impact on the characterization and optimization of mechanical energy transducers based on vertically aligned semiconducting NWs.

Abstract:Piezoelectric nanowires (NWs) or nanotubes (NTs) are a vital component in nano-electromechanical and piezoelectronic device development. With various cross-sectional geometries achievable, the piezoelectric propertycross sectional shape relation is of fundamental interest. As existing studies (primarily based on first-principles calculations) are limited to ultrathin NWs or analysis based on continuum theories, the present work employs molecular statics (MS) simulation, which enables the examination of NWs/NTs up to cross-sectional size of 20.6 nm and elucidation of the underlying mechanisms at the atomic level. Analyses are carried out for NWs/NTs with experimentally observed geometry by comparing their size-dependence of effective piezoelectric constant and the radial distribution of the average dipole moment change with strain. The fraction of strain-sensitive dipoles, initial volume contraction and surface piezoelectricity were shown to control the shape effect on the piezoelectricity of ZnO nanostructures.

Abstract:International Journal of Applied Mechanics, Ahead of Print. Nanowires (NWs) play a crucial role across a wide range of disciplines such as nanoelectromechanical systems, nanoelectronics and energy applications. As NWs continue to reduce in dimensions, their mechanical properties are increasingly affected by surface attributes. This study conducts a comprehensive examination of nanomechanical models utilized for interpreting large deformations in the bending response of silicon NWs. Specifically, the Heidelberg, Hudson, Zhan, SimpZP and ExtZP nanomechanical models are explored regarding their capability to predict the elastic properties of silicon NWs with varying critical dimensions and crystal orientations. Molecular dynamics simulations are employed to model silicon NWs with unreconstructed surface states. The calculation of intrinsic stresses and the methodology for quantifying surface properties, including surface stresses and surface elasticity constants, are carried out using atomistic modeling. The findings reveal significant disparities of up to 100[math]GPa among nanomechanical models in interpreting a singular force-deflection response obtained for a silicon NW. Inadequate consideration of surface and intrinsic effects in nanomechanical modeling of NWs leads to substantial variability in their mechanical properties. This investigation yields valuable insights into the surface characteristics of silicon NWs, thereby enhancing our understanding of the essential role played by nanomechanical models in the intricate interpretation of mechanical properties at the nanoscale.

Modified Continuum Mechanics Modeling on Size-Dependent Properties of Piezoelectric Nanomaterials: A Review

Abstract:Piezoelectric nanomaterials (PNs) are attractive for applications including sensing, actuating, energy harvesting, among others in nano-electro-mechanical-systems (NEMS) because of their excellent electromechanical coupling, mechanical and physical properties. However, the properties of PNs do not coincide with their bulk counterparts and depend on the particular size. A large amount of efforts have been devoted to studying the size-dependent properties of PNs by using experimental characterization, atomistic simulation and continuum mechanics modeling with the consideration of the scale features of the nanomaterials. This paper reviews the recent progresses and achievements in the research on the continuum mechanics modeling of the size-dependent mechanical and physical properties of PNs. We start from the fundamentals of the modified continuum mechanics models for PNs, including the theories of surface piezoelectricity, flexoelectricity and non-local piezoelectricity, with the introduction of the modified piezoelectric beam and plate models particularly for nanostructured piezoelectric materials with certain configurations. Then, we give a review on the investigation of the size-dependent properties of PNs by using the modified continuum mechanics models, such as the electromechanical coupling, bending, vibration, buckling, wave propagation and dynamic characteristics. Finally, analytical modeling and analysis of nanoscale actuators and energy harvesters based on piezoelectric nanostructures are presented.

Atomistic Treatment of Periodic Gold Nanowire Array Nanofasteners under Shear Loading

Abstract:Comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to unravel the mechanics and mechanisms associated with the strength and fracture behavior of a highly ordered gold nanowire (Au-NW) array of a pair of nanofasteners (nanoconnectors) under externally applied shear strain. Large-scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator (LAMMPS and embedded atom method were adopted to model the atomic interactions of a number of neighboring nanofasteners. This was affected via the use of a periodic simulation box around a pair of highly ordered nanotube arrays to minimize the cost of the computations. Energy minimization using a conjugate gradient algorithm was first performed and followed by atomic relaxation to achieve an equilibrated configuration under the canonical ensemble of constant temperature and volume. The relaxed equilibrated configuration of the nanofastener was then subjected to an externally applied shear strain [Formula: see text] at a rate of [Formula: see text] per nanosecond under the canonical ensemble. Our results reveal the importance of the morphology and the overlap depth of the mating nanowire arrays upon the mechanical and fracture behavior of the nanofastener under shear loading. Our work also disclosed the phenomenon of multiple contacts of some displaced nanowires with their neighbors even after their fracture leading to multiple cold-welds with added redundancy to the nanofastener. Finally, in this research, we identified the locations of dislocation emissions and the resulting fracture processes that govern the mechanical integrity and ultimately the functionality of the Au-NW connector. The proposed highly ordered alignment, as conceived numerically herein, can yield a peak stress two to three times higher than that corresponding to a random alignment reported in a previous study. The Au-NW connector also exhibited resistance to fracture, even in cases where small overlap depth is considered in joint bonding. The nanoconnector was also tested at high temperatures (up to 450 K). Our results show that the rising temperature only leads to a minor reduction in the load transmitted by the nanoconnector.
Atomistic simulations of electric field effects on the Youngʼs modulus of metal nanowires

Abstract:We present a computational, atomistic study of electric field effects on the Young's modulus of metal nanowires. The simulations are electromechanically coupled, where the mechanical forces on the atoms are obtained from realistic embedded atom method potentials, and where the electrostatic forces on the atoms are obtained using a point dipole electrostatic model that is modified to account for the different polarizability and bonding environment of surface atoms. By considering three different nanowire axial orientations (left angle bracket 100 right angle bracket, left angle bracket 110 right angle bracket and right angle bracket 111 right angle bracket) of varying cross sectional sizes and aspect ratios, we find that the Young's modulus of the nanowires differs from that predicted for the purely mechanical case due to the elimination of nonlinear elastic stiffening or softening effects due to the electric field-induced positive relaxation strain relative to the relaxed mechanical configuration. We further find that left angle bracket 100 right angle bracket nanowires are most sensitive to the applied electric field, with Young's moduli that can be increased more than 20% with increasing aspect ratio. Finally, while the orientation of the transverse surfaces does impact the Young's modulus of the nanowires under applied electric field, the key factor controlling the magnitude of the stiffness change of the nanowires is the distance between atomic planes along the axial direction of the nanowire bulk.

Abstract:ZnO nanotetrapods (ZnO NTs) with a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure consisting of four 1-D arms interconnected together through a central crystalline core, introduce interesting piezoelectric semiconducting responses in nanorods in the bent state. Considering the widespread applications of nanotetrapods in semiconductor devices, it becomes very crucial to establish a coupled model based on piezoelectric and piezotronic effects to investigate the carrier transport mechanism, which is being reported here in detail for the first time. In this work, we established a multiphysics coupled model of stress-regulated charge carrier transport by the finite element method (FEM), which considers the full account of the wurtzite (WZ) and zinc blende (ZB) regions as well as the spontaneous polarization dependence and the dependence of the material properties on the arm orientation. It is discovered that the forward gain of ZnO NT in the lateral force working mode is almost 50% higher than that in the nanorod in the normal force working mode while the reverse current is reduced to negligible. Through the simulation calculations and corresponding analysis, it is confirmed that the developed piezoelectric polarization charges are able to regulate the transport and distribution of carriers in ZnO crystal, which lays a theoretical foundation for the application of piezo-semiconductive ZnO NT devices in advanced technologies.
Surface Effects on the Piezoelectricity of ZnO Nanowires

Abstract:We utilize classical molecular dynamics to study surface effects on the piezoelectric properties of ZnO nanowires as calculated under uniaxial loading. An important point to our work is that we have utilized two types of surface treatments, those of charge compensation and surface passivation, to eliminate the polarization divergence that otherwise occurs due to the polar (0001) surfaces of ZnO. In doing so, we find that if appropriate surface treatments are utilized, the elastic modulus and the piezoelectric properties for ZnO nanowires having a variety of axial and surface orientations are all reduced as compared to the bulk value as a result of polarization-reduction in the polar [0001] direction. The reduction in effective piezoelectric constant is found to be independent of the expansion or contraction of the polar (0001) surface in response to surface stresses. Instead, the surface polarization and thus effective piezoelectric constant is substantially reduced due to a reduction in the bond length of the Zn-O dimer closest to the polar (0001) surface. Furthermore, depending on the nanowire axial orientation, we find in the absence of surface treatment that the piezoelectric properties of ZnO are either effectively lost due to unphysical transformations from the wurtzite to non-piezoelectric d-BCT phases, or also become smaller with decreasing nanowire size. The overall implication of this study is that if enhancement of the piezoelectric properties of ZnO is desired, then continued miniaturization of square or nearly square cross section ZnO wires to the nanometer scale is not likely to achieve this result.

A Physical Model of Nanotwin Unit and Orientation Organization for Designing Mechanical Performance: Cases of InSb, GaAs, ZnS

Abstract:Based on functional unit and organization (FUO) paradigm, a physical model is established to describe the effects of nanotwin units and orientation organization on mechanical properties. The predicted anisotropic elastic constants and yield strengths have comparable accuracy to molecular dynamics results with much less time cost. The model is beneficial to fast screen high mechanical‐performance structure through FUO paradigm. Functional unit and organization (FUO) paradigm starts with functional units and assembles these functional units into specific organizations to optimize material performance. An advantage of FUO paradigm is interpretation of physical essence of traditional structure–performance relationships. Experimental achievements based on FUO paradigm abound in recent years, demanding theoretical explanations for further quantitative material design. Following FUO paradigm, here a three‐step model (bond‐region‐structure) of nanotwin (NT) unit and orientation organization to optimize mechanical performance is established. First, anisotropic elasticities of representative bonds and assembled regional elastic constants are evaluated. Second, yield conditions of different regions, which are summarized as critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) criteria of NT structure, are quantified. Third, anisotropic yield strengths of NT structure from the regional elastic constants and CRSS criteria are derived. This FUO‐based model is implemented into InSb, GaAs, and ZnS, predicted elastic constants and yield strengths are validated with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The method is more efficient than MD with comparable accuracy, and is also flexible to combine with density function theory and experiment. This demonstration sets foundation of NT unit and orientation organization design for achieving optimum mechanical performance.

Mechanical Behavior Enhancement of ZnO Nanowire by Embedding Different Nanowires

Abstract:In this work, we employed commercial finite element modeling (FEM) software package ABAQUS to analyze mechanical properties of ZnO nanowire before and after embedding with different kinds of nanowires, having different materials and cross-section models such as Au (circular), Ag (pentagonal) and Si (rectangular) using three point bending technique. The length and diameter of the ZnO nanowire were measured to be 12,280 nm and 103.2 nm, respectively. In addition, Au, Ag and Si nanowires were considered to have the length of 12,280 nm and the diameter of 27 nm. It was found that after embedding Si nanowire with rectangular cross-section into the ZnO nanowire, the distribution of Von Misses stresses criterion, displacement and strain were decreased than the other nanowires embedded. The highest stiffness, the elastic deformation and the high strength against brittle failure have been made by Si nanowire comparison to the Au and Ag nanowires, respectively. (C) 2018 The Authors. Abstract:Uniaxial tensile measurements have been performed on [0001]-oriented zinc oxide nanowires (NWs) with diameters ranging from 18 to 204 nm using a homemade in situ mechanical testing system. Diameter dependence of tensile modulus (TM) is further compared with that of bending modulus (BM, shown earlier). With diameters of NWs decreasing in an intermediate range (about 30–120 nm), TM increases slower than BM, while it gets close to the latter with diameters decreasing below 30 nm; for rather large diameters, they both tend to the bulk modulus. A core-shell model is developed based on diameter-dependent and radial-distributed elastic stiffening in NWs and well explains our experimental results.

Abstract:Nanostructures with high surface area to volume ratio, such as oxidized and coated Cu nanowires (NWs), exhibit unique mechanical properties due to their size and surface effects. Understanding the complex oxidation process of Cu NWs at nanoscale and quantifying its resulting effects on mechanical behavior and properties are significantly essential for effective usage of Cu NW devices in a wide range of applications in nanoelectronics. Here, we perform molecular dynamics simulations using ReaxFF (reactive force field) to investigate the oxidation process and mechanisms of [001]-oriented cylindrical Cu NWs and its contribution on the mechanical deformation behavior and material properties as a function of NW sizes. The relatively thin oxide Cu x O y layer is formed on the surface of Cu NWs in an O 2 environment, creating a core/shell (Cu/Cu x O y ) NW structure that played a key role in governing the overall tensile mechanical deformation behavior and properties of Cu NW. The formation of oxide layer effects, including the resulting interface and defects, leads to a reduction in the initial dislocation nucleation barrier, which facilitates the onset of plasticity and stress relaxation, ultimately resulting in a negative impact on the tensile strength, Young's modulus, yield stress and strain, and flow stress when compared to pristine counterparts. It is worth noting that the tensile mechanical response and properties of the Cu NWs are highly dependent on the pre-existing oxide shell layer associated with the size of NW, determining the overall mechanical performance and properties of Cu NWs.

Abstract:The complex tetrapod shape of zinc oxide nanostructure, which is constructed from four one-dimensional arms interconnected together via a central core, is a special 3D geometry with multifunctional applications in advanced technologies. The ZnO hexagonal wurtzite crystal lattice with a non-centrosymmetric structure introduces interesting piezoelectric property in nanorods in the bent state, which has been well reported and utilized in piezo- and tribo-electric nanogenerator applications. Considering the broad technological relevance of tetrapods, it is important to understand the piezoelectric response of zinc oxide tetrapods under different conditions. In this study, we explicate the fundamental mechanical and electrical properties of ZnO nanotetrapods (ZnO NTs) through a detailed finite element method analysis. On this basis, the effects of shape factors (including length, height, and aspect ratio) as well as connection strength and packing density on the deformation and piezoelectric potential of ZnO NTs are examined, offering guidance for the fabrication of ZnO NTs. This theoretical model and numerical simulation provide an avenue for further piezoelectric and piezotronic research of ZnO NTs.
