Abstract:A new metaheuristic algorithm called green anaconda optimization (GAO) which imitates the natural behavior of green anacondas has been designed. The fundamental inspiration for GAO is the mechanism of recognizing the position of the female species by the male species during the mating season and the hunting strategy of green anacondas. GAO’s mathematical modeling is presented based on the simulation of these two strategies of green anacondas in two phases of exploration and exploitation. The effectiveness of the proposed GAO approach in solving optimization problems is evaluated on twenty-nine objective functions from the CEC 2017 test suite and the CEC 2019 test suite. The efficiency of GAO in providing solutions for optimization problems is compared with the performance of twelve well-known metaheuristic algorithms. The simulation results show that the proposed GAO approach has a high capability in exploration, exploitation, and creating a balance between them and performs better compared to competitor algorithms. In addition, the implementation of GAO on twenty-one optimization problems from the CEC 2011 test suite indicates the effective capability of the proposed approach in handling real-world applications.

Abstract:<p>Metaheuristics play a critical role in solving optimization problems, and most of them have been inspired by the collective intelligence of natural organisms in nature. This paper proposes a new metaheuristic algorithm inspired by gorilla troops' social intelligence in nature, called Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimizer (GTO). In this algorithm, gorillas' collective life is mathematically formulated, and new mechanisms are designed to perform exploration and exploitation. To evaluate the GTO, we apply it to 52 standard benchmark functions and seven engineering problems. Friedman's test and Wilcoxon rank-sum statistical tests statistically compared the proposed method with several existing metaheuristics. The results demonstrate that the GTO performs better than comparative algorithms on most benchmark functions, particularly on high-dimensional problems. The results demonstrate that the GTO can provide superior results compared with other metaheuristics.</p>

Abstract:This study presents an advanced metaheuristic approach termed the Enhanced Gorilla Troops Optimizer (EGTO), which builds upon the Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA) to enhance the search capabilities of the Gorilla Troops Optimizer (GTO). Like numerous other metaheuristic algorithms, the GTO encounters difficulties in preserving convergence accuracy and stability, notably when tackling intricate and adaptable optimization problems, especially when compared to more advanced optimization techniques. Addressing these challenges and aiming for improved performance, this paper proposes the EGTO, integrating high and low-velocity ratios inspired by the MPA. The EGTO technique effectively balances exploration and exploitation phases, achieving impressive results by utilizing fewer parameters and operations. Evaluation on a diverse array of benchmark functions, comprising 23 established functions and ten complex ones from the CEC2019 benchmark, highlights its performance. Comparative analysis against established optimization techniques reveals EGTO's superiority, consistently outperforming its counterparts such as tuna swarm optimization, grey wolf optimizer, gradient based optimizer, artificial rabbits optimization algorithm, pelican optimization algorithm, Runge Kutta optimization algorithm (RUN), and original GTO algorithms across various test functions. Furthermore, EGTO's efficacy extends to addressing seven challenging engineering design problems, encompassing three-bar truss design, compression spring design, pressure vessel design, cantilever beam design, welded beam design, speed reducer design, and gear train design. The results showcase EGTO's robust convergence rate, its adeptness in locating local/global optima, and its supremacy over alternative methodologies explored.

Abstract:This study proposes a novel population-based metaheuristic algorithm called the Gazelle Optimization Algorithm (GOA), inspired by the gazelles’ survival ability in their predator-dominated environment. Every day, the gazelle knows that if it does not outrun and outmaneuver its predators, it becomes meat for the day, and to survive, the gazelles have to escape from their predators consistently. This information is vital to proposing a new metaheuristic algorithm that uses the gazelle’s survival abilities to solve real-world optimization problems. The exploitation phase of the algorithm simulates the gazelles grazing peacefully in the absence of the predator or while the predator is stalking it. The GOA goes into the exploration phase once a predator is spotted. The exploration phase consists of the gazelle outrunning and outmaneuvering the predator to a safe haven. These two phases are iteratively repeated, subject to the termination criteria, and finding optimal solutions to the optimization problems. The robustness and efficiency of the developed algorithm as an optimization tool were tested using benchmark optimization test functions and selected engineering design problems (fifteen classical, ten composited functions, and four mechanical engineering design problems). The results of the GOA are compared with nine other state-of-the-art algorithms. The simulation results obtained confirm the superiority and competitiveness of the GOA algorithm over nine state-of-the-art algorithms available in the literature. Also, the standard statistical analysis test carried out on the results further confirmed the ability of GOA to find solutions to the selected optimization problems. It also showed that GOA performed better or, in some cases, was very competitive with some state-of-the-art algorithms. Also, the results show that GOA is a potent tool for optimization that can be adapted to solve problems in different optimization domains.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new metaheuristic technique known as the Greater Cane Rat Algorithm (GCRA) for addressing optimization problems. The optimization process of GCRA is inspired by the intelligent foraging behaviors of greater cane rats during and off mating season. Being highly nocturnal, they are intelligible enough to leave trails as they forage through reeds and grass. Such trails would subsequently lead to food and water sources and shelter. The exploration phase is achieved when they leave the different shelters scattered around their territory to forage and leave trails. It is presumed that the alpha male maintains knowledge about these routes, and as a result, other rats modify their location according to this information. Also, the males are aware of the breeding season and separate themselves from the group. The assumption is that once the group is separated during this season, the foraging activities are concentrated within areas of abundant food sources, which aids the exploitation. Hence, the smart foraging paths and behaviors during the mating season are mathematically represented to realize the design of the GCR algorithm and carry out the optimization tasks. The performance of GCRA is tested using twenty-two classical benchmark functions, ten CEC 2020 complex functions, and the CEC 2011 real-world continuous benchmark problems. To further test the performance of the proposed algorithm, six classic problems in the engineering domain were used. Furthermore, a thorough analysis of computational and convergence results is presented to shed light on the efficacy and stability levels of GCRA. The statistical significance of the results is compared with ten state-of-the-art algorithms using Friedman's and Wilcoxon's signed rank tests. These findings show that GCRA produced optimal or nearly optimal solutions and evaded the trap of local minima, distinguishing it from the rival optimization algorithms employed to tackle similar problems. Abstract:As the complexity of optimization problems continues to rise, the demand for high-performance algorithms becomes increasingly urgent. This paper addresses the challenges faced by the Aquila Optimizer (AO), a novel swarm-based intelligent optimizer simulating the predatory behaviors of Aquila in North America. While AO has shown good performance in prior studies, it grapples with issues such as poor convergence accuracy and a tendency to fall into local optima when tackling complex optimization tasks. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a multi-strategy boosted AO algorithm (PGAO) aimed at providing enhanced reliability for global optimization. The proposed algorithm incorporates several key strategies. Initially, a chaotic map is employed to initialize the positions of all search agents, enriching population diversity and laying a solid foundation for global exploration. Subsequently, the pinhole imaging learning strategy is introduced to identify superior candidate solutions in the opposite direction of the search domain during each iteration, accelerating convergence and increasing the probability of obtaining the global optimal solution. To achieve a more effective balance between the exploration and development phases in AO, a nonlinear switching factor is designed to replace the original fixed switching mechanism. Finally, the golden sine operator is utilized to enhance the algorithm's local exploitation trends. Through these four improvement strategies, the optimization performance of AO is significantly enhanced. The proposed PGAO algorithm's effectiveness is validated across 23 classical, 29 IEEE CEC2017, and 10 IEEE CEC2019 benchmark functions. Additionally, six real-world engineering design problems are employed to assess the practicability of PGAO. Results demonstrate that PGAO exhibits better competitiveness and application prospects compared to the basic method and various advanced algorithms. In conclusion, this study contributes to addressing the challenges of complex optimization problems, significantly improving the performance of global optimization algorithms, and holds both theoretical and practical significance.

Abstract:This paper proposes a meta-heuristic called Eel and Grouper Optimizer (EGO). The EGO algorithm is inspired by the symbiotic interaction and foraging strategy of eels and groupers in marine ecosystems. The algorithm's efficacy is demonstrated through rigorous evaluation using nineteen benchmark functions, showcasing its superior performance compared to established meta-heuristic algorithms. The findings and results on the benchmark functions demonstrate that the EGO algorithm outperforms well-known meta-heuristics. This work also considers solving a wide range of real-world practical engineering case studies including tension/compression spring, pressure vessel, piston lever, and car side impact, and the CEC 2020 Real-World Benchmark using EGO to illustrate the practicality of the proposed algorithm when dealing with the challenges of real search spaces with unknown global optima. The results show that the proposed EGO algorithm is a reliable soft computing technique for real-world optimization problems and can efficiently outperform the existing algorithms in the literature.

Modified Archimedes optimization algorithm for global optimization problems: a comparative study

Abstract:Abstract Archimedes Optimization Algorithm (AOA) is a recent optimization algorithm inspired by Archimedes’ Principle. In this study, a Modified Archimedes Optimization Algorithm (MDAOA) is proposed. The goal of the modification is to avoid early convergence and improve balance between exploration and exploitation. Modification is implemented by a two phase mechanism: optimizing the candidate positions of objects using the dimension learning-based (DL) strategy and recalculating predetermined five parameters used in the original AOA. DL strategy along with problem specific parameters lead to improvements in the balance between exploration and exploitation. The performance of the proposed MDAOA algorithm is tested on 13 standard benchmark functions, 29 CEC 2017 benchmark functions, optimal placement of electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) on the IEEE-33 distribution system, and five real-life engineering problems. In addition, results of the proposed modified algorithm are compared with modern and competitive algorithms such as Honey Badger Algorithm, Sine Cosine Algorithm, Butterfly Optimization Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization Butterfly Optimization Algorithm, Golden Jackal Optimization, Whale Optimization Algorithm, Ant Lion Optimizer, Salp Swarm Algorithm, and Atomic Orbital Search. Experimental results suggest that MDAOA outperforms other algorithms in the majority of the cases with consistently low standard deviation values. MDAOA returned best results in all of 13 standard benchmarks, 26 of 29 CEC 2017 benchmarks (89.65%), optimal placement of EVCSs problem and all of five real-life engineering problems. Overall success rate is 45 out of 48 problems (93.75%). Results are statistically analyzed by Friedman test with Wilcoxon rank-sum as post hoc test for pairwise comparisons.

Abstract:Supply chain efficiency is a major challenge in today's business environment, where efficient resource allocation and coordination of activities are essential for competitive advantage. Traditional efficiency strategies often struggle for resources for the complex and dynamic network. In response, bio-inspired metaheuristic algorithms have emerged as powerful tools to solve these optimization problems. Referring to the random search nature of metaheuristic algorithms and emphasizing that no metaheuristic algorithm is the best optimizer for all optimization applications, the No Free Lunch (NFL) theorem encourages researchers to design newer algorithms to be able to provide more effective solutions to optimization problems. Motivated by the NFL theorem, the innovation and novelty of this paper is in designing a new meta-heuristic algorithm called Bobcat Optimization Algorithm (BOA) that imitates the natural behavior of bobcats in the wild. The basic inspiration of BOA is derived from the hunting strategy of bobcats during the attack towards the prey and the chase process between them. The theory of BOA is stated and then mathematically modeled in two phases (i) exploration based on the simulation of the bobcat's position change while moving towards the prey and (ii) exploitation based on simulating the bobcat's position change during the chase process to catch the prey. The performance of BOA is evaluated in optimization to handle the CEC 2017 test suite for problem dimensions equal to 10, 30, 50, and 100, as well as to address CEC 2020. The optimization results show that BOA has a high ability in exploration, exploitation, and balance them during the search process in order to achieve a suitable solution for optimization problems. The results obtained from BOA are compared with the performance of twelve well-known metaheuristic algorithms. The findings show that BOA has been successful in handling the CEC 2017 test suite in 89.65, 79.31, 93.10, and 89.65% of the functions for the problem dimension equal to 10, 30, 50, and 100, respectively. Also, the findings show that in order to handle the CEC 2020 test suite, BOA has been successful in 100% of the functions of this test suite. The statistical analysis confirms that BOA has a significant statistical superiority in the competition with the compared algorithms. Also, in order to analyze the efficiency of BOA in dealing with real world applications, twenty-two constrained optimization problems from CEC 2011 test suite and four engineering design problems have been selected. The findings show that BOA has been successful in 90.90% of CEC2011 test suite optimization problems and in 100% of engineering design problems. In addition, the efficiency of BOA to handle SCM applications has been challenged to solve ten case studies in the field of sustainable lot size optimization. The findings show that BOA has successfully provided superior performance in 100% of the case studies compared to competitor algorithms.

Abstract:Motivated by the hunting strategies of cheetahs, this paper proposes a nature-inspired algorithm called the cheetah optimizer (CO). Cheetahs generally utilize three main strategies for hunting prey, i.e., searching, sitting-and-waiting, and attacking. These strategies are adopted in this work. Additionally, the leave the pray and go back home strategy is also incorporated in the hunting process to improve the proposed framework's population diversification, convergence performance, and robustness. We perform intensive testing over 14 shifted-rotated CEC-2005 benchmark functions to evaluate the performance of the proposed CO in comparison to state-of-the-art algorithms. Moreover, to test the power of the proposed CO algorithm over large-scale optimization problems, the CEC2010 and the CEC2013 benchmarks are considered. The proposed algorithm is also tested in solving one of the well-known and complex engineering problems, i.e., the economic load dispatch problem. For all considered problems, the results are shown to outperform those obtained using other conventional and improved algorithms. The simulation results demonstrate that the CO algorithm can successfully solve large-scale and challenging optimization problems and offers a significant advantage over different standards and improved and hybrid existing algorithms. Abstract:Giant Pacific Octopus Optimizer (GPOO), a new swarm computational-intelligence metaheuristic approach, is a natural algorithm based on the behavior of octopuses as they struggle to live in the environment. The GPOO model, which are two primary techniques—searching and attacking prey—are offered for algorithm optimization. The transitions between the exploration and exploitation stages are handled in a way that strikes an appropriate balance. A numerous of tests are carried out to verify the novel optimization process's capacity to identify the best solutions to different optimization issues. The GPOO model is evaluated using 10 complex benchmark functions for CEC2019 and 23 classical benchmark functions. Additionally, the results are compared to other metaheuristic algorithms. Globally, algorithms are also employed to address practical engineering technical issues. The outcomes show that GPOO demonstrates other comparable methods in terms of convergence speed and successfully locates all or most local/global optima.
Zebra Optimization Algorithm: A New Bio-inspired Optimization Algorithm for Solving Optimization Algorithm

Abstract:In this paper, a new bio-inspired metaheuristic algorithm called Zebra Optimization Algorithm (ZOA) is developed; its fundamental inspiration is the behavior of zebras in nature. ZOA simulates the foraging behavior of zebras and their defense strategy against predators’ attacks. The ZOA steps are described and then mathematically modeled. ZOA performance in optimization is evaluated on sixty-eight benchmark functions, including unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, fixed-dimensional multimodal, CEC2015, and CEC2017. The results obtained from ZOA are compared with the performance of nine well-known algorithms. The simulation results show that ZOA can solve optimization problems by creating a suitable balance between exploration and exploitation and has a superior performance compared to nine competitor algorithms. ZOA’s ability to solve real-world problems has been tested on four engineering design problems, namely, tension/compression spring, welded beam, speed reducer, and pressure vessel. The optimization results show that ZOA is an effective optimizer in determining the values of the design variables of these problems compared to the nine competitor algorithms.

GOOSE Algorithm: A Powerful Optimization Tool for Real-World Engineering Challenges and Beyond

Abstract:This study proposes the GOOSE algorithm as a novel metaheuristic algorithm based on the goose's behavior during rest and foraging. The goose stands on one leg and keeps his balance to guard and protect other individuals in the flock. The GOOSE algorithm is benchmarked on 19 well-known benchmark test functions, and the results are verified by a comparative study with genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), and fitness dependent optimizer (FDO). In addition, the proposed algorithm is tested on 10 modern benchmark functions, and the gained results are compared with three recent algorithms, such as the dragonfly algorithm, whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and salp swarm algorithm (SSA). Moreover, the GOOSE algorithm is tested on 5 classical benchmark functions, and the obtained results are evaluated with six algorithms, such as fitness dependent optimizer (FDO), FOX optimizer, butterfly optimization algorithm (BOA), whale optimization algorithm, dragonfly algorithm, and chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA). The achieved findings attest to the proposed algorithm's superior performance compared to the other algorithms that were utilized in the current study. The technique is then used to optimize Welded beam design and Economic Load Dispatch Problem, three renowned real-world engineering challenges, and the Pathological IgG Fraction in the Nervous System. The outcomes of the engineering case studies illustrate how well the suggested approach can optimize issues that arise in the real-world.

Coati Optimization Algorithm: A new bio-inspired metaheuristic algorithm for solving optimization problems

Abstract:In this paper, a new metaheuristic algorithm called the Coati Optimization Algorithm (COA) is introduced, which mimics coati behavior in nature. The fundamental idea of COA is the simulation of the two natural behaviors of coatis: (i) their behavior when attacking and hunting iguanas and (ii) their escape from predators. The implementation steps of COA are described and mathematically modeled in two phases of exploration and exploitation. COA performance is evaluated on fifty-one objective functions, including twenty-nine functions from the IEEE CEC-2017 test suite and twenty-two real-world applications from the IEEE CEC-2011 test suite. COA's results are compared to those of eleven well-known metaheuristic algorithms. The simulation results indicate that COA has an evident superiority over the compared algorithms by balancing exploration in global search and exploitation in local search, and is far more competitive. To assess the COA's effectiveness in real-world applications, the proposed approach is implemented on the IEEE CEC-2011 test functions and four practical optimization problems, which the simulation results indicate the high capability of COA in dealing with these types of optimization problems.

Abstract:To address the diverse requirements of various optimization problems and the inherent limitations of existing meta-heuristic algorithms, this paper introduces a novel meta-heuristic algorithm, the white-faced capuchin optimizer (WCO). The algorithm is mathematically modeled based on the foraging, social interaction, and defensive behaviors of the white-faced capuchin, incorporating various adaptive and stochastic factors to enhance its global exploration and local exploitation performance. The WCO is rigorously benchmarked against eight high-performance algorithms across four widely recognized test suites: CEC-2005 (30 dimensions and fixed dimensions), CEC-2017 (30 dimensions), CEC-2020 (20 dimensions), and CEC-2022 (20 dimensions). WCO achieves optimal performance on the above four benchmark suites, using the best average value as the standard. The success rates of optimization are 78.3%, 69%, 60%, and 66.7%, respectively. Statistical analysis through the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Friedman test demonstrated WCO's superior optimization accuracy and solution quality. Furthermore, WCO is tested on five engineering design problems and two path-planning scenarios, consistently delivering high-quality solutions and outperforming comparison algorithms in real-world challenges. Demonstrating robust convergence and adaptability across diverse tasks, WCO highlights its significant potential for solving real-world optimization challenges.

Abstract:Over the past years, many efforts have been accomplished to achieve fast and accurate meta-heuristic algorithms to optimize a variety of real-world problems. This study presents a new optimization method based on an unusual geological phenomenon in nature, named Geyser inspired Algorithm (GEA). The mathematical modeling of this geological phenomenon is carried out to have a better understanding of the optimization process. The efficiency and accuracy of GEA are verified using statistical examination and convergence rate comparison on numerous CEC 2005, CEC 2014, CEC 2017, and real-parameter benchmark functions. Moreover, GEA has been applied to several real-parameter engineering optimization problems to evaluate its effectiveness. In addition, to demonstrate the applicability and robustness of GEA, a comprehensive investigation is performed for a fair comparison with other standard optimization methods. The results demonstrate that GEA is noticeably prosperous in reaching the optimal solutions with a high convergence rate in comparison with other well-known nature-inspired algorithms, including ABC, BBO, PSO, and RCGA. Abstract:This paper introduces a new metaheuristic algorithm named the Osprey Optimization Algorithm (OOA), which imitates the behavior of osprey in nature. The fundamental inspiration of OOA is the strategy of ospreys when hunting fish from the seas. In this hunting strategy, the osprey hunts the prey after detecting its position, then carries it to a suitable position to eat it. The proposed approach of OOA in two phases of exploration and exploitation is mathematically modeled based on the simulation of the natural behavior of ospreys during the hunting process. The performance of OOA has been evaluated in the optimization of twenty-nine standard benchmark functions from the CEC 2017 test suite. Furthermore, the performance of OOA is compared with the performance of twelve well-known metaheuristic algorithms. The simulation results show that the proposed OOA has provided superior performance compared to competitor algorithms by maintaining the balance between exploration and exploitation. In addition, the implementation of OOA on twenty-two real-world constrained optimization problems from the CEC 2011 test suite shows the high capability of the proposed approach in optimizing real-world applications.

Abstract:217 GROUP M HIV-1 VIRUSES have been categorized into subtypes A±J based on phylogenetic reconstruction using DNA sequences. Sequence variation between these subtypes generally ranges from 25 to 35% within the env gene. In most cases of HIV-1 infection, viruses of a single subtype are detected. While the identification of recombinant viruses derived from different subtypes suggests the occurrence of dual infection, there are relatively few reports in which HIV-1 viruses of two different M group subtypes were detected in a single individual. In most cases, it is not possible to determine the timing of infection with viruses of different subtypes or whether both subtypes originated from the same source. The setting of vertical (mother-to-infant) HIV-1 transmission provides a unique opportunity to study dual transmission. In this setting, the time available for transmission is relatively limited and the mother is usually the only potential source of infection. There is little known about dual HIV-1 infection in the setting of vertical transmission. In one study, subtype A and C viruses were detected in a Rwandan woman; however, only subtype A was detected in her infant. In a second study, subtype B and C viruses were detected in a Brazilian woman and in her infant. To examine the potential transmission of HIV-1 viruses of different subtypes, we analyzed V3 cDNAs from Ugandan women and infants. The presence of diverse HIV-1 subtypes in Uganda increases the potential for dual infection. HIV-1 subtypes found in Uganda include A, B, C, D, and G; subtypes A and D account for the majority of infections. Plasma samples were collected from a Ugandan woman and her infant at the time of delivery. An additional sample was collected from the infant at 6 weeks of age. These samples were collected in 1993 as part of a natural history study of vertical HIV-1 transmission in Kampala, Uganda. Plasma was shipped to the United States for analysis. HIV-1 RNA was extracted from 200 m l of plasma using the Amplicor HIV-1 Monitor test kit (Roche Diagnostic Systems, Branchburg, NJ) according to manufacturer instructions. RNA extracts were resuspended in a final volume of 400 m l. Twenty-five microliters of each RNA extract was used for reverse transcription (RT) with Moloney murine leukemia virus reverse transcriptase. Each 25-m l aliquot contained at least 50 copies of HIV-1 RNA. To minimize the potential for bias due to primer binding, random hexamer oligonucleotide primers [pd(N)6; Pharmacia, Piscataway, NJ] were used in the RT reactions. The V3 region of the env gene was amplified in a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers that correspond to highly conserved regions of the env gene.23 To reduce the potential for sample contamination, each step of the RT-PCR amplification was assembled in a separate, enclosed workstation using aerosol-resistant pipette tips and dedicated equipment. Equipment in each workstation was ultraviolet (UV) irradiated after each experiment. Negative controls without template were included for each RT and PCR reaction. Each step of the analysis (including RT, PCR, cloning, and plasmid analysis) was performed on a separate day for each sample. Comparison of V3 cDNA sequences obtained from these plasma samples and from unrelated samples analyzed in our laboratory showed no evidence of contamination. PCR products were purified using a spin column technique and cloned into the pCR2.1 vector, using the TA cloning kit (Invitrogen, Carlsbad, CA). The resulting plasmids were isolated and sequenced using the 2 21 M13 forward primer and the BigDye terminator cycle sequencing ready reaction kit (Perkin-Elmer Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA). At least 10 cDNAs from each sample were analyzed by DNA sequencing and the predicted amino acid sequences were determined (Fig. 1). V3 sequences were used for subtype analysis. Sequences were aligned manually in the program VisEd (provided by Dr. Ken Peters). Abstract:Golden jackal optimization (GJO), a lately published meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, is inspired by the foraging behavior of pairs of golden jackals and shows an acceptable optimization performance. However, GJO exists a shortage in balancing exploration and exploitation, as it completely focuses on exploitation in the later iterations. A new variant of GJO, named Ameliorated Golden jackal optimization (AGJO), is proposed in this study. Three strategies are employed in AGJO to alleviate the imbalance between the exploration and exploitation of GJO: the enhanced movement strategy, the global search strategy, and the multi-angle position update strategy for prey. An environmental disturbance factor is added to the third strategy to strengthen GJO's ability to evade the local optimal solution. The performance of AGJO is tested and compared with GJO and seven well-known meta-heuristic algorithms for 23 classical benchmark functions, CEC 2017 and the first ten functions of CEC 2006 with constaints. These results show that AGJO performs better over 90% of these functions compared to GJO. Also, AGJO is also highly competitive in terms of optimization capability and convergence speed compared with other algorithms. Finally, AGJO is applied to optimize engineering problems, including five classical engineering design problems with constraints and a displacement prediction problem of composite pipes. Results show that AGJO is a potential algorithm for solving these real problems rather than GJO and other algorithms.

Abstract:The Golden Jackal Optimization (GJO) algorithm is a novel, nature-inspired optimization technique that has gained recognition as a highly promising metaheuristic due to its notable efficiency and adaptability. However, the GJO algorithm possesses several shortcomings, including inadequate exploitation ability, vulnerability to local optima, and imbalanced exploration-exploitation. Therefore, this paper presents an enhanced version of the named mGJO, tailored explicitly for addressing real-world engineering and feature selection problems. The mGJO incorporates four improvements to the standard GJO. To begin with, Chaos-OBL (COBL) based population initialization is proposed to increase diversity in population. Secondly, a nonlinear control parameter is proposed to regulate the exploration-exploitation transition. Thirdly, the original updating rule of GJO is combined with the ESQ mechanism to prevent the leader solutions from influencing the local optimal solutions. Finally, a new adaptive mutation strategy is presented to alter individuals and improve positions based on their fitness. To evaluate the efficiency of the suggested mGJO is assessed using CEC2005, CEC2017, CEC2020 and CEC2022 benchmark functions. The proposed mGJO is also applied to five common real-world engineering problems and is also applied to the feature selection problems to assess its performance. Furthermore, the proposed mGJO is compared with various advanced algorithms to evaluate its performance. Statistical analyses, including the Friedman rank test and Wilcoxon test, are applied to the experimental data to validate the superiority of the extracted results. The experimental results and the statistical analysis indicate the superiority of mGJO in terms of convergence rate, solution quality, and optimization accuracy.
