Abstract:Agricultural systems are facing the negative impacts of erosion and water scarcity, directly impacting the hydro-mechanical behavior of soil aggregation. Several technologies have been proposed to reduce hydro-mechanical soil-related problems in agriculture. Biopolymer-based hydrogels have been reported to be a great tool to tackle these problems in soils. In this study, we investigated the hydro-mechanical behavior of different soils media treated with Ca-bacterial alginate hydrogel. We used an unconfined uniaxial compression test, aggregate stability test and hydraulic conductivity measurements to investigate the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of treated soils media. Our results from unconfined uniaxial compression test showed that yield stress (i.e., strength) increased in treated soils with higher kaolinite and water content (i.e., HCM3), compared with untreated coarse quartz sand (i.e., CM1). Furthermore, we found that temperature is an important factor in the gelation capacity of our hydrogel. At room temperature, HCM3 displayed the higher aggregate stability, almost 5.5-fold compared with treated coarse quartz sand (HCM1), while this differential response was not sustained at warm temperature. In general, the addition of different quantities of kaolinite decreased the saturated hydraulic conductivity for all treatments. Finally, bright field microscopy imaging represents the soil media matrix between sand and clay particles with Ca-bacterial alginate hydrogel that modify the hydro-mechanical behavior of different soils media. The results of this study could be helpful for the soil-related problems in agriculture facing the negative effects of climate change.

Abstract:Climate change is generating severe changes in the physical behavior of soils (i.e., soil structure, mechanical resistance, and water conductivity), causing negative impacts on different agricultural systems and, therefore, threatening food security. To cope with this situation, hydrogels based on biopolymers have been proposed to modify the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of complex porous materials such as soils, yet most of them are nonsoluble, making their application at field level laborious. In this study, we investigated the effect of a water-soluble hydrogel based on bacterial alginate on the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of coarse quartz sand. The results from unconfined uniaxial compression test showed that the strength of the sand treated with hydrogel increased by 94.5%, whereas hydraulic conductivity decreased 33%. Interestingly, we observed that bacterial alginate and hydrogel shifted the mechanics of the fluid phase toward a Darcy regime. The aggregate stability tests showed that coarse quartz sand treated with hydrogel displays larger mean weight diameter, reaching 1.5 mm compared with 0.12 mm of the control (i.e., coarse quartz sand). Finally, transmission light microscopy imaging of the hydrogel treatment revealed a new three-dimensional matrix between the quartz sand particles, changing the microaggregates and macroaggregates and providing a modified structure of the sand material. Our findings suggest that the use of the water-soluble hydrogel improves the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of coarse quartz sand, allowing better soil conservation against climate change-related phenomena, and is also potentially applicable in agricultural systems facing water scarcity.

Abstract:Bio-mediated soil improvement methods (those that use biological processes) have potentially low cost and environmental impact, but can be difficult to control to ensure effective results, especially if engineered bacteria are used. A novel application of using agarose gel as a soil analogue is proposed, which can enable development of advanced bio-mediated soil improvement methods by reproducing relevant mechanical properties while allowing complex biological processes to be studied in detail, before testing in soils. It is envisaged that agarose gel will be used instead of soil when developing early-stage prototype methods, as it provides an ideal environment to facilitate growth and monitoring of bacteria. A programme of geotechnical tests and scanning electron microscopy on Agarose Low Melt (LM) gel is presented. The results demonstrate comparable pore size, undrained strength, and permeability to soft clays and peats, but more linear stress–strain behaviour and higher compressibility. This paper offers proof of this novel concept, but further investigation is required as only a single type of agarose, at a single concentration is tested. By varying these factors, along with use of different solvents, there is significant potential to tune the behaviour of the analogue to particular soils or construction scenarios.

Abstract:Alginate is a polysaccharide with the property of forming hydrogels, which is economic production, zero toxicity, and biocompatibility. In the agro-industry, alginate is used as a super absorbent polymer, coating seeds, fruits, and vegetables and as a carrier of bacteria and fungi as plant-growth promoters and biocontrol. The latter has a high impact on agriculture since the implementation of microorganisms in a polymer matrix improves soil quality; plant nutrition, and is functional as a preventive measure for the appearance of phytopathogenic. Additionally, it minimizes losses of foods due to wrong post-harvest handling. In this review, we provide an overview of physicochemical properties of alginate, some methods for preparation and modification of capsules and coatings, to finally describe its application in agro-industry as a matrix of plant-growth-promoting microorganisms, its effectiveness in cultivation and post-harvest, and its effect on the environment, as well as the prospects for future agro-industrial applications.

Abstract:Alginates are natural polysaccharides widely participating in food, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications due to their excellent gelling capacity. Their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability further extend their application to biomedical fields. The low consistency in molecular weight and composition of algae-based alginates may limit their performance in advanced biomedical applications. It makes microbial alginate production more attractive due to its potential for customizing alginate molecules with stable characteristics. Production costs remain the primary factor limiting the commercialization of microbial alginates. However, carbon-rich wastes from sugar, dairy, and biodiesel industries may serve as potential substitutes for pure sugars for microbial alginate production to reduce substrate costs. Fermentation parameter control and genetic engineering strategies may further improve the production efficiency and customize the molecular composition of microbial alginates. To meet the specific needs of biomedical applications, alginates may need functionalization, such as functional group modifications and crosslinking treatments, to achieve enhanced mechanical properties and biochemical activities. The development of alginate-based composites incorporated with other polysaccharides, gelatin, and bioactive factors can integrate the advantages of each component to meet multiple requirements in wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering applications. This review provided a comprehensive insight into the sustainable production of high-value microbial alginates. It also discussed recent advances in alginate modification strategies and alginate-based composites for representative biomedical applications.

Abstract:The effectiveness of pyridostigmine pretreatment against soman poisoning has been determined in rhesus monkeys and marmosets receiving atropine therapy. Pretreatment with the maximum sign‐free dose (200 μg kg−1, i.v.) raised the subcutaneous LD50 of soman by a factor of 28 in rhesus monkeys and 15 in marmosets. Theprotection afforded by a quarter of the sign‐free dose of pyridostigmine was not significantly less. These levels of protection are higher than any reported in non‐primate species.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop alginate-based hydrogels for application in horticultural field as bio-based substrate additives to control moisture. For this purpose, a 2-level factorial design was performed to select the appropriate levels of significant variables, i.e. polymer concentration (2-3 % w/v), CaCl2 concentration (0.2-0.4 % w/v), and cross-linking time (10-30 min). Statistical analysis showed that CaCl2 concentration and cross-linking time were the most significant variables affecting the swelling properties of the alginate-based hydrogels. Hence, two formulations (2 or 3 % w/v of alginate, cross-linked with 0.2 % w/v of CaCl2 for 10 min) were chosen for further analysis. A complete characterization of each material was performed in terms of swelling degree (SD) and kinetics in distilled and tap water, gel fraction, thermal properties, morphology, and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. SD after 24 h in distilled water was above 55 g/g dry hydrogel in both formulations. Bioassays performed in lettuce plants as well as substrate microbiota provided evidence for the putative application of alginate-based hydrogels in horticultural systems, with an 80 % increase in fresh weight of the plants grown in substrate supplemented with 5 % hydrogels compared to control substrate after 7 days under drought conditions.

Abstract:Natural fibers are being employed in the development of the next generation of biomaterials, due to their reduced environmental impact and the ease of their functionalization with natural polymers. In this study, Barba del Viejo fibers were treated with NaOH and bonded with alginate through ionic gelation by using CaCℓ2, which facilitates ionic interactions between alginate and Ca2+. Additionally, antimicrobial Barba del Viejo/alginate/silver nanoparticles(BVA/Ago) scaffolds were developed from the NaOH-treated BV-microfibers, silver salt and sodium alginate, with mint leaves extract as a nucleating agent. The functional and crystalline structure of microfibers and the hydrogels developed were analyzed using the FTIR and XRD. SEM explained that the diameter of the NaOH-treated microfibers was ⁓1.32 μm. The morphological images of the hydrogels, confirm the functionalization of alginate with microfibers and the formation of Ago nanoparticles within the hydrogels network. The swelling ratio of the hydrogels increased with alginate functionalization on BV-microfibers, improving NaOH treatment, but decreased the degradation rate. UV-spectra showed absorption peaks in the wavelength range of between 432 and 442 nm, confirming the surface plasmon resonance effect of the Ago nanoparticles within the scaffolds. TEM analysis confirms that the Ago nanoparticles in hydrogels were spherical in shape, with sizes ranging from ⁓2 and 10 nm. The zeta potential analysis indicates that the Ago nanoparticles possess negative charges, providing a stable surface that helps to prevent aggregation and, therefore, demonstrating a homogeneous distribution throughout all the BVA/Ago scaffolds prepared. The antimicrobial studies reveal that the BVA/Ago scaffolds exhibit significant antibacterial activity against E.coli and S.aureus bacteria. Further investigations are affirmed to study the potential applications of these scaffolds in infection-control wound dressing.

Abstract:In the quest for advanced and environmentally friendly solutions to address challenges in the field of wastewater treatment, the use of polymers such as sodium alginate (Na-Alg) in combination with immobilized microorganisms (IMs) stands out as a promising strategy. This study assesses the potential of Na-Alg in immobilizing microorganisms for wastewater treatment, emphasizing its effectiveness and relevance in environmental preservation through the use of IMs. Advances in IMs are examined, and the interactions between these microorganisms and Na-Alg as the immobilization support are highlighted. Additionally, models for studying the kinetic degradation of contaminants and the importance of oxygen supply to IMs are detailed. The combination of Na-Alg with IMs shows promise in the context of improving water quality, preserving ecological balance, and addressing climate change, but further research is required to overcome the identified challenges. Additional areas to explore are discussed, which are expected to contribute to the innovation of relevant systems.

Alginate-based hydrogels prepared via ionic gelation: An experimental design approach to predict the crosslinking degree

Abstract:Alginate-based hydrogels can be obtained by the simple addition of bivalent ions to aqueous polysaccharide solutions without the use of toxic chemicals; however, the hydrogels prepared by this way result inhomogeneous and irreproducible due to the extremely fast crosslinking reaction. To overcome such limitations, in the present work a novel preparation approach is proposed and optimized; the method is based on the use of agar moulds rich of bivalent ions as diffusing system to modulate the release of Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ cations in order to guarantee a better control of the crosslinking process. A full factorial experimental design was applied to assess the effects and the mutual interactions of three selected parameters (sodium alginate concentration, crosslinking agent concentration within the agar moulds, crosslinking time) on the gelation process. The swelling and mechanical properties of the prepared hydrogels were investigated both in deionized water and in a saline environment; furthermore, the hydrogels were characterized by means of thermogravimetric analysis and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The obtained results demonstrated that both the experimental variables and the environmental conditions have a significant influence on the structure and the performances of the resulting hydrogels. In particular, the use of high polymer concentration and crosslinking agent amount leads to strong hydrogels corresponding to a superior crosslinking degree; more in detail, Ba2+ ions show a great affinity for alginate leading to the hydrogels with the highest mechanical properties. Moreover, the ion-exchange occurring in saline environment seems to strongly reduce the effective crosslinking degree of alginate hydrogels with a consequential loss of mechanical properties and stability. The collected data were finally elaborated through statistical analysis combined with response surface methodology to develop theoretical models successfully able to correlate the crosslinking degree to the experimental conditions, thus opening the way of designing and fabricating alginate-based hydrogels with tailored morphology and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Alginate-based hydrogels are widely utilized for various applications, including enzyme immobilization and the development of drug delivery systems, owing to their advantageous characteristics, such as low toxicity, high availability and cost-effectiveness. However, the broad applicability of alginate hydrogels is hindered by their limited mechanical and chemical stability, as well as their poor permeability to hydrophobic molecules. In this study, we addressed the mechanical properties and chemical resistance of alginate hydrogels in a high-pKa environment by the copolymerization of alginate with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The addition of PVA resulted in a threefold improvement in the shear modulus of the copolymeric hydrogel, as well as enhanced chemical resistance to (S)-α-methylbenzylamine, a model molecule with a high pKa value. Furthermore, we addressed the permeability challenge by introducing a betaine–propylene glycol deep eutectic solvent (DES) into the PVA-alginate copolymer. This led to an increased permeability for ethyl 3-oxobutanoate, a model molecule used for bioreduction to chiral alcohols. Moreover, the addition of the DES resulted in a notable improvement of the shear modulus of the resulting hydrogel. This dual effect highlights the role of the DES in achieving the desired improvement of the hydrogel as an immobilization carrier.
Functionally responsive hydrogels with salt-alkali sensitivity effectively target soil amelioration

Abstract:The long-standing crisis of soil salinization and alkalization poses a significant challenge to global agricultural development. High soil salinity-alkalinity, water dispersion, and nutrient loss present major hurdles to soil improvement. Novel environmentally friendly gels have demonstrated excellent water retention and slow-release capabilities in agricultural enhancement. However, their application for improving saline-alkali soil is both scarce and competitive. This study proposes a new strategy for regulating saline-alkali soil using gel-coated controlled-release soil modifiers (CWR-SRMs), where radical-polymerized gels are embedded on the surface of composite gel beads through spray coating. Characterization and performance analysis reveal that the three-dimensional spatial network structure rich in hydrophilic groups exhibits good thermal stability (first-stage weight loss temperature of 257.7 °C in thermogravimetric analysis) and encapsulation efficiency for fulvic acid‐potassium (FA-K), which can enhance soil quality in saline-alkali environments. The molecular chain relaxation under saline-alkali conditions promotes a synergistic effect of swelling and slow release, endowing it with qualifications as a water reservoir, Ca 2+ source unit, and slow-release body. The results of a 6 weeks incubation experiment on 0–20 cm saline-alkaline soil with different application gradients showed that the gradient content had a significant effect on the soil improvement effect. Specifically, the T2 (the dosage accounted for 1 % of soil mass) treatment significantly increases water retention (30 % ~ 90 %), and nutrient levels (30 % ~ 50 %), while significantly decreasing soil sodium colloid content (30 % ~ 60 %) and soil pH (10 % ~ 15 %). Furthermore, PCA analysis indicates that the addition of 1 % CWR-SRMs as amendments can significantly adjust the negative aspects of soil salinity and alkalinity. This highlights the excellent applicability of CWR-SRMs in improving saline-alkali agricultural ecosystems, demonstrating the potential value of novel environmentally friendly gels as an alternative solution for soil challenges persistently affected by adverse salinity and alkalinity.

Abstract:The hydrogel-forming ability and post-gelling mechanical properties of structural extracellular polymeric substances (sEPS) extracted from aerobic granular sludge (AGS) were studied in comparison to well-known biopolymers (i.e., alginate and κ-/ι-carrageenan) taking advantage of material-saving, reproducible and robust experimental protocols. With respect to alginate and κ-carrageenan, sEPS and ι-carrageenan hydrogels formed in presence of divalent metal ions M 2+ behaved similarly once subjected to consecutive compression-decompression cycles, deforming elastically in all the applied range of deformations. While the overall mechanical response remained almost unchanged varying polymer concentration and ionic cross-linker concentration and nature, the Young's modulus E appeared significantly affected by the applied gelling conditions ( E ≃ 4–20 kPa). As a result of the higher complexity of the extracellular biopolymeric matrix, higher driving forces (sEPS and M 2+ concentrations) were needed to form stable and stiff hydrogels with respect to the studied model biopolymers: the establishment of an extended 3D network started for sEPS concentrations around 2.5 wt% (Ca 2+ ≥ 0.1 M). Oscillatory shear experiments confirmed that sEPS were able to form hydrogels with solid-like mechanical properties at 1–10 wt% sEPS concentrations. Overall, the optimization of the gelling methods performed might help to overcome many bottlenecks characterizing this research area. The feasibility of forming sEPS hydrogels with mechanical properties comparable to other biopolymer-based systems currently applied for commercial purposes led to an awareness of the potential application and might open new valorisation scenarios able to contribute to a more bio-based and circular economy.

An anionic biopolymer γ-polyglutamate enhanced the microbially induced carbonate precipitation for soil improvement: mechanical behaviors and underlying mechanism

Abstract:The use of biopolymer to improve the performance of microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP)-treated sands is a novel and eco-friendly concept. This work found an anionic biopolymer, γ-polyglutamate (γ-PGA), could significantly improve the performance of MICP-treated sands. Comparing the control with absence of γ-PGA, the concentration of 0.1–9 g/L γ-PGA increased the compressive strength of MICP-treated sands by 1.54–3.96 times and significantly reduced the brittleness. The MICP process analysis and microstructural detection demonstrated that γ-PGA in the specimens provided many nucleation sites and templates for calcite generation, partially kept the bacterial urease activity by replacement of the bacteria as nucleation sites, thereby improving the calcite generation. The γ-PGA also cemented sand grains with calcite through the hydrogen bond-type intermolecular interactions. Both the calcite generation and the hydrogen bond-type intermolecular interactions by γ-PGA played vital roles in enhancing MICP for soil improvement. Additionally, γ-PGA, as a viscoelastic admixture between the crystals and sand grains, effectively dissipated the energy of stress and thus reduced the brittleness of MICP-treated sands. This is the first report on the application of anionic biopolymer to MICP technology. It provides a novel concept in promoting the efficiency and sustainability of MICP.

Abstract:The development of alginate-based composites in agriculture to combat nutrient loss and drought for sustainable development has drawn increasing attention in the scientific community. Existing studies are however scattered, and the retention and slow-release mechanisms of alginate-based composites are not well understood. This paper systematically reviews the current literature on the preparation, characterization, and agricultural applications of various alginate-based composites. The synthesis methods of alginate-based composites are firstly summarized, followed by a review of available analytical techniques to characterize alginate-based composites for the attainment of their desired performance. Secondly, the performance and controlling factors for agricultural applications of alginate-based composites are discussed, including aquasorb, slow-release fertilizer, soil amendment, microbial inoculants, and controlled release of pesticides for pest management. Finally, suggestions and future perspectives are proposed to expand the applications of alginate-based composites for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:Colloidal silica grouting is a ground improvement technique capable of stabilizing weak problematic soils and achieving large reductions in soil hydraulic conductivities for applications including earthquake-induced liquefaction mitigation and groundwater flow control. In the conventional approach, chemical accelerants are added to colloidal silica suspensions that are introduced into soils targeted for improvement and the formation of a semi-solid silica gel occurs over time at a rate controlled by suspension chemistry and in situ geochemical conditions. Although the process has been extensively investigated, controlling the rate of gel formation in the presence of varying subsurface conditions and the limited ability of conventional methods to effectively monitor the gel formation process has posed practical challenges. In this study, a biomediated soil improvement process is proposed which utilizes enriched fermentative microorganisms to control the gelation of colloidal silica grouts through solution pH reductions and ionic strength increases. Four series of batch experiments were performed to investigate the ability of glucose fermenting microorganisms to be enriched in natural sands to induce geochemical changes capable of mediating silica gel formation and assess the effect of treatment solution composition on pH reduction behaviors. Complementary batch and soil column experiments were subsequently performed to upscale the process and explore the effectiveness of chemical, hydraulic, and geophysical methods to monitor microbial activity, gel formation, and engineering improvements. Results demonstrate that fermentative microorganisms can be successfully enriched and mediate gel formation in suspensions that would otherwise remain highly stable, thereby forgoing the need for chemical accelerants, increasing the reliability and control of colloidal silica grouting, enabling new monitoring approaches, and affording engineering enhancements comparable to conventional colloidal silica grouts.

Abstract:This review article presents past and current alginate-based materials in each application, showing the widest range of alginate's usage and development in the past and in recent years. The first segment emphasizes the unique characteristics of alginates and their origin. The second segment sets alginates according to their application based on their features and limitations. Alginate is a polysaccharide and generally occurs as water-soluble sodium alginate. It constitutes hydrophilic and anionic polysaccharides originally extracted from natural brown algae and bacteria. Due to its promising properties, such as gelling, moisture retention, and film-forming, it can be used in environmental protection, cosmetics, medicine, tissue engineering, and the food industry. The comparison of publications with alginate-based products in the field of environmental protection, medicine, food, and cosmetics in scientific articles showed that the greatest number was assigned to the environmental field (30,767) and medicine (24,279), whereas fewer publications were available in cosmetic (5692) and food industries (24,334). Data are provided from the Google Scholar database (including abstract, title, and keywords), accessed in May 2023. In this review, various materials based on alginate are described, showing detailed information on modified composites and their possible usage. Alginate's application in water remediation and its significant value are highlighted. In this study, existing knowledge is compared, and this paper concludes with its future prospects.
