Abstract:Nocturnal animals that rely on their visual system for foraging, mating, and navigation usually exhibit specific traits associated with living in scotopic conditions. Most nocturnal birds have several visual specializations, such as enlarged eyes and an increased orbital convergence. However, the actual role of binocular vision in nocturnal foraging is still debated. Nightjars (Aves: Caprimulgidae) are predators that actively pursue and capture flying insects in crepuscular and nocturnal environments, mainly using a conspicuous “sit-and-wait” tactic on which pursuit begins with an insect flying over the bird that sits on the ground. In this study, we describe the visual system of the band-winged nightjar (Systellura longirostris), with emphasis on anatomical features previously described as relevant for nocturnal birds. Orbit convergence, determined by 3D scanning of the skull, was 73.28°. The visual field, determined by ophthalmoscopic reflex, exhibits an area of maximum binocular overlap of 42°, and it is dorsally oriented. The eyes showed a nocturnal-like normalized corneal aperture/axial length index. Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) were relatively scant, and distributed in an unusual oblique-band pattern, with higher concentrations in the ventrotemporal quadrant. Together, these results indicate that the band-winged nightjar exhibits a retinal specialization associated with the binocular area of their dorsal visual field, a relevant area for pursuit triggering and prey attacks. The RGC distribution observed is unusual among birds, but similar to that of some visually dependent insectivorous bats, suggesting that those features might be convergent in relation to feeding strategies.
Fetal macrosomia--pregnancy and delivery.

Abstract:The authors have studied pregnancy, delivery and early neonatal status of macrosomic infants (> or = 4000 g) delivered between January 1, 1984, and December 31, 1992. The control group comprised age--and parity--matched pregnant women and their newborns weighing 3000 to 3999 g. From 9980 singleton pregnancies, 2021 (20.3%) macrosomics were delivered. The incidence of macrosomia was 16.7% in the primiparous group, 23.1% in the parity 2-4 group, and 28.2% in the multiparous group (parity > or = 5) (P < 0.001). The rates of macrosomic infants for pregnant adolescents (aged < or = 19 years), pregnant women aged 20-34 years and old pregnant women (> or = 35 years) were 12.0%, 20.6% and 21.5%, respectively (P < 0.001). Macrosomia was not influenced by occupation and antenatal visits (P > 0.05). The rates of > or = 16 kg weight gain in the macrosomic and control groups were 36.2% (mean 14.30 +/- 4.66 kg) and 16.7% (mean 12.18 +/- 4.82 kg), respectively (t = 12.05; P < 0.001). Of 546 pregnant women with fetal macrosomia subjected to oral GT testing, glucose intolerance was found in 20.0% and gestational diabetes in 4.8%. The rates of glucose intolerance and gestational diabetes in 259 control subjects were 13.9% and 2.3%, respectively (P < 0.05). Light (index 1-4) and moderate (index 5-7) forms of EPH gestosis were more common in the macrosomic group, whereas no difference was observed for severe forms (index > or = 8) between the groups (P > 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Mosaic and Concerted Evolution in the Visual System of Birds

Abstract:Two main models have been proposed to explain how the relative size of neural structures varies through evolution. In the mosaic evolution model, individual brain structures vary in size independently of each other, whereas in the concerted evolution model developmental constraints result in different parts of the brain varying in size in a coordinated manner. Several studies have shown variation of the relative size of individual nuclei in the vertebrate brain, but it is currently not known if nuclei belonging to the same functional pathway vary independently of each other or in a concerted manner. The visual system of birds offers an ideal opportunity to specifically test which of the two models apply to an entire sensory pathway. Here, we examine the relative size of 9 different visual nuclei across 98 species of birds. This includes data on interspecific variation in the cytoarchitecture and relative size of the isthmal nuclei, which has not been previously reported. We also use a combination of statistical analyses, phylogenetically corrected principal component analysis and evolutionary rates of change on the absolute and relative size of the nine nuclei, to test if visual nuclei evolved in a concerted or mosaic manner. Our results strongly indicate a combination of mosaic and concerted evolution (in the relative size of nine nuclei) within the avian visual system. Specifically, the relative size of the isthmal nuclei and parts of the tectofugal pathway covary across species in a concerted fashion, whereas the relative volume of the other visual nuclei measured vary independently of one another, such as that predicted by the mosaic model. Our results suggest the covariation of different neural structures depends not only on the functional connectivity of each nucleus, but also on the diversity of afferents and efferents of each nucleus.

Abstract:Birds with larger eyes are predicted to have higher spatial resolution because of their larger retinal image. Raptors are well known for their acute vision, mediated by their deep central fovea. Because foraging strategies may demand specific visual adaptations, eye size and fovea may differ between species with different foraging ecology. We tested whether predators (actively hunting mobile prey) and carrion eaters (eating dead prey) from the order Accipitriformes differ in eye size, foveal depth, and retinal thickness using spectral domain optical coherence tomography and comparative phylogenetic methods. We found that (1) all studied predators (except one) had a central and a temporal fovea, but all carrion eaters had only the central fovea; (2) eye size scaled with body mass both in predators and carrion eaters; (3) predators had larger eyes relative to body mass and a thicker retina at the edge of the fovea than carrion eaters, but there was no difference in the depth of the central fovea between the groups. Finally, we found that (4) larger eyes generally had a deeper central fovea. These results suggest that the visual system of raptors within the order Accipitriformes may be highly adapted to the foraging strategy, except for the foveal depth, which seems mostly dependent upon the eye size.

Abstract:Avian species vary in their visual system configuration, but previous studies have often compared single visual traits between 2-3 distantly related species. However, birds use different visual dimensions that cannot be maximized simultaneously to meet different perceptual demands, potentially leading to trade-offs between visual traits. We studied the degree of inter-specific variation in multiple visual traits related to foraging and anti-predator behaviors in nine species of closely related emberizid sparrows, controlling for phylogenetic effects. Emberizid sparrows maximize binocular vision, even seeing their bill tips, which may enhance the detection of prey and facilitate food handling. Sparrows have a single retinal center of acute vision (i.e., fovea) projecting fronto-laterally (but not into the binocular field). The foveal projection close to the edge of the binocular field may shorten the time to gather and process both monocular and binocular visual information from the foraging substrate. Contrary to previous work, we found that species with larger visual fields had higher visual acuity, which may compensate for larger blind spots (i.e., pectens) above the center of acute vision, enhancing predator detection. Finally, species with a steeper change in ganglion cell density across the retina had higher eye movement amplitude likely due to a more pronounced reduction in visual resolution away from the fovea, which would need to be moved around more frequently. The visual configuration of emberizid passive prey foragers is substantially different from that of previously studied avian groups (e.g., sit-and-wait and tactile foragers).

Abstract:Primates as a group possess large, forward‐facing eyes that support relatively high visual acuity. The evolution of forward‐facing eyes increased the size of the binocular visual field, and is functionally tied to an improved ability to precisely assess distances using binocular cues. Comparative data suggest that forward‐facing eyes and a large binocular visual field probably first evolved in the context of visually guided manual acquisition of small prey items. Diurnal anthropoids exhibit the highest visual acuities recorded for mammals. This very high acuity is based on a distinctive suite of anatomical adaptations, including small corneas relative to eye size, filters that reduce chromatic aberration, and an all‐cone retinal fovea. The evolution of these primate visual adaptations may have had important consequences for other features of primate sensory ecology, including reductions in the functionality of the main and accessory olfactory systems.

Abstract:The role of light in structuring the ecological niche remains a frontier in understanding how vertebrate communities assemble and respond to global change. For birds, eyes represent the primary external anatomical structure specifically evolved to interpret light, yet eye morphology remains understudied compared to movement and dietary traits. Here, I use Stanley Ritland's unpublished measurements of transverse eye diameter from preserved specimens to explore the ecological and phylogenetic drivers of eye morphology for a third of terrestrial avian diversity ( N = 2777 species). Species with larger eyes specialized in darker understory and forested habitats, foraging manoeuvres and prey items requiring long-distance optical resolution and were more likely to occur in tropical latitudes. When compared to dietary and movement traits, eye size was a top predictor for habitat, foraging manoeuvre, diet and latitude, adding 8–28% more explanatory power. Eye size was phylogenetically conserved ( λ = 0.90), with phylogeny explaining 61% of eye size variation. I suggest that light has contributed to the evolution and assembly of global vertebrate communities and that eye size provides a useful predictor to assess community response to global change.

Abstract:Birds gather visual information through scanning behavior to make decisions relevant for survival (e.g., detecting predators and finding food). The goal of this study was (a) to review some visual properties involved in scanning behavior (retinal specialization for visual resolution and motion detection, visual acuity, and size of the blind area), and (b) hypothesize how the inter-specific variability in these properties may lead to different scanning strategies. The avian visual system has a high degree of heterogeneity in visual performance across the visual field, with some sectors providing higher levels of visual resolution and motion detection (e.g., retinal specializations) than others (e.g., peripheral retina and blind area). Thus, information quality will vary in different parts of the visual field, which contradicts some theoretical assumptions on information gathering. Birds need to move their eyes and heads to align the retinal specializations to different sectors of visual space. The rates of eye and head movements can then be used as proxies for scanning strategies. I propose specific predictions as to how each of the visual properties studied can affect scanning strategies in the context of predator detection in different habitat types and with different levels of predation risk. Establishing the degree of association between sensory specializations and scanning strategies can enhance our understanding of the evolution of anti-predator behavior.

Abstract:Ecological diversity among diurnal birds of prey, or raptors, is highlighted regarding their sensory abilities. While raptors are believed to forage primarily using sight, the sensory demands of scavengers and predators differ, as reflected in their visual systems. Here, I have reviewed the visual specialisations of predatory and scavenging diurnal raptors, focusing on (1) the anatomy of the eye and (2) the use of vision in foraging. Predators have larger eyes than scavengers relative to their body mass, potentially highlighting the higher importance of vision in these species. Scavengers possess one centrally positioned fovea that allows for the detection of carrion at a distance. In addition to the central fovea, predators have a second, temporally positioned fovea that views the frontal visual field, possibly for prey capture. Spatial resolution does not differ between predators and scavengers. In contrast, the organisation of the visual fields reflects important divergences, with enhanced binocularity in predators opposed to an enlarged field of view in scavengers. Predators also have a larger blind spot above the head. The diversity of visual system specializations according to the foraging ecology displayed by these birds suggests a complex interplay between visual anatomy and ecology, often unrelatedly of phylogeny.

Abstract:Vision is a complex sensory system that requires coordination among cellular and morphological traits, and it remains unclear how functional relationships among traits interact with ecological selective pressures to shape the evolution of vision. Many species have specialized high visual acuity regions in the retina defined by patterns of ganglion cell density, which may evolve in response to ecological conditions. For example, ganglion cell density can increase radially towards the center of the retina to form an area centralis, which is thought to improve acuity towards the center of the visual field in predators. Another example is the horizontal streak, where ganglion cells are dense across the center of the retina, which is thought to be beneficial in horizon-dominated habitats. At the morphological level, many have proposed that predation selects for high orbit convergence angles, or forward-facing eyes. We tested these hypotheses in a phylogenetic framework across eutherian mammals and only found support for the association between the horizontal streak and horizon-dominated habitats. We also tested if retinal specializations evolve in response to orbit convergence angles. We found that horizontal streaks were associated with side-facing eyes, which may both facilitate panoramic vision. Previous studies observed that some species with side-facing eyes have an area centralis shifted towards the temporal side of the retina, such that the high acuity region would project forward, but this relationship had not been tested quantitatively. We found that the temporal distance of the area centralis from the center of the retina was inversely correlated with orbit convergence, as predicted. Our work shows a strong relationship between orbit convergence and retinal specializations. We find support that both visual ecology and functional interactions among traits play important roles in the evolution of some ocular traits across mammals.

Evolution and spectral tuning of visual pigments in birds and mammals

Abstract:Variation in the types and spectral characteristics of visual pigments is a common mechanism for the adaptation of the vertebrate visual system to prevailing light conditions. The extent of this diversity in mammals and birds is discussed in detail in this review, alongside an in-depth consideration of the molecular changes involved. In mammals, a nocturnal stage in early evolution is thought to underlie the reduction in the number of classes of cone visual pigment genes from four to only two, with the secondary loss of one of these genes in many monochromatic nocturnal and marine species. The trichromacy seen in many primates arises from either a polymorphism or duplication of one of these genes. In contrast, birds have retained the four ancestral cone visual pigment genes, with a generally conserved expression in either single or double cone classes. The loss of sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is a feature of both mammalian and avian visual evolution, with UV sensitivity retained among mammals by only a subset of rodents and marsupials. Where it is found in birds, it is not ancestral but newly acquired.

Abstract:Abstract The Night Parrot ( Pezoporus occidentalis ) is a rare, nocturnal parrot species that has largely escaped scientific investigation due to its behaviour and habitat preferences. Recent field studies have revealed some insights into Night Parrot behaviour, but nothing is known of its sensory abilities. Here, we used μCT scans of an intact Night Parrot specimen to determine if its visual system shares similarities with other nocturnal species. The endocast of the Night Parrot revealed relatively small optic lobes and optic foramina, especially compared with closely related grass parakeets, but no apparent differences in orbit dimensions. Our data suggests that the Night Parrot likely has lower visual acuity than most other parrots, including its congener, the Eastern Ground Parrot ( P. wallicus ). We propose that the visual system of the Night Parrot might represent a compromise between the need to see under low light conditions and the visual acuity required to detect predators, forage, and fly. Based on the endocast and optic foramen measurements, the Night Parrot fits into a common pattern of decreased retinal input to the optic lobes in birds that should be explored more thoroughly in extant and extinct species.

Abstract:Visual field width above the head is significantly correlated (r(s) = 0.92, n = 11, p < 0.001) with eye size in a sample of terrestrial birds that differ in their phylogeny and ecology. These species can be divided into two groups. Smaller-eyed sun-observers (axial length <18 mm) have comprehensive or near comprehensive visual coverage of the celestial hemisphere and are thus unable to avoid viewing the sun. Larger-eyed sun-avoiders (axial length >18 mm) have restricted visual fields and various types of optical adnexa (enlarged brows, hair like feathers on the eye lids and around the eye) which can prevent solar illumination of the cornea. We suggest that these differences relate to visual rather than pathological problems and argue that the reduction of disability glare, produced by sunlight falling directly upon the eye, becomes increasingly significant as eye size increases. We propose that the reduced visual fields and optical adnexa of the larger-eyed birds are primarily concerned with the maintenance of high spatial resolution.

Abstract:Flying animals need to accurately detect, identify and track fast-moving objects and these behavioral requirements are likely to strongly select for abilities to resolve visual detail in time. However, evidence of highly elevated temporal acuity relative to non-flying animals has so far been confined to insects while it has been missing in birds. With behavioral experiments on three wild passerine species, blue tits, collared and pied flycatchers, we demonstrate temporal acuities of vision far exceeding predictions based on the sizes and metabolic rates of these birds. This implies a history of strong natural selection on temporal resolution. These birds can resolve alternating light-dark cycles at up to 145 Hz (average: 129, 127 and 137, respectively), which is ca. 50 Hz over the highest frequency shown in any other vertebrate. We argue that rapid vision should confer a selective advantage in many bird species that are ecologically similar to the three species examined in our study. Thus, rapid vision may be a more typical avian trait than the famously sharp vision found in birds of prey.

Abstract:Background: Fundamental spatial vision capabilities of visual systems can be characterized by their contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. Objective: Comparison of contrast sensitivity and visual acuity in humans and other animals. Material and methods: An analysis of known contrast sensitivity functions and maximum visual acuity across selected taxa was carried out, with consideration of measurement principles, viewing conditions and allometry. Results: Comparing across all analyzed species, contrast sensitivity functions have inverted U‑shape characteristics, with key differences in both position and absolute sensitivity within the spectrum of spatial frequencies. Humans, for example, have a maximum sensitivity at 5 cycles/degree and mice at approximately 0.1 cycles/degree. Body and eye size generally correlate well with maximum visual acuity. Across eye types, lens eyes have the highest optical and visual resolution, all other things being equal. Diurnal species typically outperform crepuscular or nocturnal species. Humans generally excel at both maximum contrast sensitivity as well as visual acuity. Conclusion: Despite great differences in optical, anatomical and neurophysiological structures between humans and animals, spatial vision capabilities are generally comparable across taxa. This favors the hypothesis that spatial vision in animals develops primarily towards meeting similar evolutionary needs within the limits of biophysical and optical laws.
Light conditions and the evolution of the visual system in birds.

Abstract:Despite vision is an essential sense for many animals, the intuitively appealing notion that the visual system has been shaped by environmental light conditions is backed by insufficient evidence. Based on a comprehensive phylogenetic comparative analysis of birds, we investigate if exposure to different light conditions might have triggered evolutionary divergence in the visual system through pressures on light sensitivity, visual acuity, and neural processing capacity. Our analyses suggest that birds that have adopted nocturnal habits evolved eyes with larger corneal diameters and, to a lesser extent, longer axial length than diurnal species. However, we found no evidence that sensing and processing organs were selected together, as observed in diurnal birds. Rather than enlarging the processing centers, we found a tendency among nocturnal species to either reduce or maintain the size of the two main brain centers involved in vision -the optic tectum and the wulst. These results suggest a mosaic pattern of evolution, wherein optimization of the eye optics for efficient light capture in nocturnal species may have compromised visual acuity and central processing capacity.

Abstract:Birds, particularly raptors, are believed to forage primarily using visual cues. However, raptor foraging tactics are highly diverse — from chasing mobile prey to scavenging — which may reflect adaptations of their visual systems. To investigate this, we studied the visual field configuration of 15 species of diurnal Accipitriformes that differ in such tactics, first focusing on the binocular field and blind area by using a single traits approach, and then exploring the shape of the binocular field with morphometric approaches. While the maximum binocular field width did not differ in species of different foraging tactics, the overall shape of their binocular fields did. In particular, raptors chasing terrestrial prey (ground predators) had a more protruding binocular field and a wider blind area above the head than did raptors chasing aerial or aquatic prey and obligate scavengers. Ground predators that forage on mammals from above have a wide but short bill — which increases ingestion rate — and large suborbital ridge to avoid sun glare. This may explain the protruding binocular field and the wide blind area above the head. By contrast, species from the two other groups have long but narrow bills used to pluck, flake or tear food and may need large visual coverage (and reduced suborbital ridges) to increase their foraging efficiency (e.g. using large visual coverage to follow the escaping prey in three dimensions or detect conspecifics). We propose that binocular field shape is associated with bill and suborbital ridge shape and, ultimately, foraging strategies.

Abstract:Abstract Avian vision is fundamentally different from human vision; however, even within birds there are substantial between-species differences in visual perception in terms of visual acuity, visual coverage, and color vision. However, there are not many species that have all these visual traits described, which can constrain our ability to study the evolution of visual systems in birds. To start addressing this gap, we characterized multiple traits of the visual system (visual coverage, visual acuity, centers of acute vision, and color vision) of the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), one of the most abundant and studied birds in North America. We found that Red-winged Blackbirds have: wide visual coverage; one center of acute vision per eye (fovea) projecting fronto-laterally with high density of single and double cones, making it the center of both chromatic and achromatic vision; a wide binocular field that does not have the input of the centers of acute vision; and an ultraviolet sensitive visual system. With this information, we parameterized a Red-winged Blackbird-specific perceptual model considering different plumage patches. We found that the male red epaulet was chromatically conspicuous but with minimal achromatic signal, but the male yellow patch had a lower chromatic but a higher achromatic signal, which may be explained by the pigment composition of the feathers. However, the female epaulet was not visually conspicuous in both the chromatic and achromatic dimensions compared with other female feather patches. We discuss the implications of this visual system configuration relative to the foraging, antipredator, mate choice, and social behaviors of Red-winged Blackbirds. Our findings can be used for comparative studies as well as for making more species-specific predictions about different visual behaviors for future empirical testing.

Abstract:Heliconius butterflies are well-known for their colourful wing patterns, which advertise distastefulness to potential predators and are used during mate choice. However, the relative importance of different aspects of these signals will depend on the visual abilities of Heliconius and their predators. Previous studies have investigated colour sensitivity and neural anatomy, but visual acuity (the ability to perceive detail) has not been studied in these butterflies. Here, we provide the first estimate of visual acuity in Heliconius : from a behavioural optomotor assay, we found that mean visual acuity = 0.49 cycles-per-degree (cpd), with higher acuity in males than females. We also examined eye morphology and report more ommatidia in male eyes. Finally, we estimated how visual acuity affects Heliconius visual perception compared to a potential avian predator. Whereas the bird predator maintained high resolving power, Heliconius lost the ability to resolve detail at greater distances, though colours may remain salient. These results will inform future studies of Heliconius wing pattern evolution, as well as other aspects in these highly visual butterflies, which have emerged as an important system in studies of adaptation and speciation.
