Abstract:In this work, we present a dataset that combines functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) to use as a resource for understanding human brain function in these two imaging modalities. The dataset can also be used for optimizing preprocessing methods for simultaneously collected imaging data. The dataset includes simultaneously collected recordings from 22 individuals (ages: 23–51) across various visual and naturalistic stimuli. In addition, physiological, eye tracking, electrocardiography, and cognitive and behavioral data were collected along with this neuroimaging data. Visual tasks include a flickering checkerboard collected outside and inside the MRI scanner (EEG-only) and simultaneous EEG-fMRI recordings. Simultaneous recordings include rest, the visual paradigm Inscapes, and several short video movies representing naturalistic stimuli. Raw and preprocessed data are openly available to download. We present this dataset as part of an effort to provide open-access data to increase the opportunity for discoveries and understanding of the human brain and evaluate the correlation between electrical brain activity and blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals.

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG)-based open-access datasets are available for emotion recognition studies, where external auditory/visual stimuli are used to artificially evoke pre-defined emotions. In this study, we provide a novel EEG dataset containing the emotional information induced during a realistic human-computer interaction (HCI) using a voice user interface system that mimics natural human-to-human communication. To validate our dataset via neurophysiological investigation and binary emotion classification, we applied a series of signal processing and machine learning methods to the EEG data. The maximum classification accuracy ranged from 43.3% to 90.8% over 38 subjects and classification features could be interpreted neurophysiologically. Our EEG data could be used to develop a reliable HCI system because they were acquired in a natural HCI environment. In addition, auxiliary physiological data measured simultaneously with the EEG data also showed plausible results, i.e., electrocardiogram, photoplethysmogram, galvanic skin response, and facial images, which could be utilized for automatic emotion discrimination independently from, as well as together with the EEG data via the fusion of multi-modal physiological datasets.

Abstract:Abstract This work provides the community with high-density Electroencephalography (HD-EEG, 256 channels) datasets collected during task-free and task-related paradigms. It includes forty-three healthy participants performing visual naming and spelling tasks, visual and auditory naming tasks and a visual working memory task in addition to resting state. The HD-EEG data are furnished in the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) format. These datasets can be used to (i) track brain networks dynamics and their rapid reconfigurations at sub-second time scale in different conditions, (naming/spelling/rest) and modalities, (auditory/visual) and compare them to each other, (ii) validate several parameters involved in the methods used to estimate cortical brain networks through scalp EEG, such as the open question of optimal number of channels and number of regions of interest and (iii) allow the reproducibility of results obtained so far using HD-EEG. We hope that delivering these datasets will lead to the development of new methods that can be used to estimate brain cortical networks and to better understand the general functioning of the brain during rest and task. Abstract:A criminal act is involved in a high percentage of cases of nasal fracture, and exact medical information describing the damages found is mandatory for the criminal court. It is necessary, that the medical information are obtained from the ENT-department, where the patient is treated, as the information obtained from the casualty department has a too low degree of truth in the establishment of the diagnosis. The statement should include information on the treatment given, as linear fractures in good position requiring no treatment may be classified legally as an offence against the person rather than as a bodily harm. X-ray examination of the nose in cases of nasal fracture gives a much too high number of false positive and false negative results to have any legal value, and, having no medical value as well, they should not be taken unless for scientific purposes.

Abstract:To investigate the impact of sleep deprivation (SD) on mood, alertness, and resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG), we present an eyes-open resting-state EEG dataset. The dataset comprises EEG recordings and cognitive data from 71 participants undergoing two testing sessions: one involving SD and the other normal sleep. In each session, participants engaged in eyes-open resting-state EEG. The Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) was employed for alertness measurement. Emotional and sleepiness were measured using Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) and Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS). Additionally, to examine the influence of individual sleep quality and traits on SD, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) were utilized. This dataset's sharing may contribute to open EEG measurements in the field of SD.

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) is a mechanism to understand the brain’s functioning by analyzing brain electrical signals. More recently, it has been more commonly used in studies that are focused on the causation and effect of dementia. More tools are now available to gather EEG data. This brings about the challenge of understanding brain signals, which involves signal processing. Professionals with an electrical engineering background are very comfortable analyzing EEG data. Still, scientists in computer science and related fields need a source that can identify all the tools available and the process of analyzing the data. This paper deals specifically with the existing EEG data analysis tools and the processes involved in analyzing the EEG data using these tools. Furthermore, the paper goes in-depth into identifying the tools and the mechanisms of data processing techniques. In addition, it lists a set of definitions required for a better understanding of EEG data analysis, which can be challenging. The purpose of this paper is to serve as a reference for not only scientists that are new to EEG data analysis but also seasoned scientists that are looking for a specific data component in EEG and can go straight to the section of the paper that deals with the tool that they are using.

Abstract:We present a multimodal data set for the analysis of human affective states. The electroencephalogram (EEG) and peripheral physiological signals of 32 participants were recorded as each watched 40 one-minute long excerpts of music videos. Participants rated each video in terms of the levels of arousal, valence, like/dislike, dominance, and familiarity. For 22 of the 32 participants, frontal face video was also recorded. A novel method for stimuli selection is proposed using retrieval by affective tags from the last.fm website, video highlight detection, and an online assessment tool. An extensive analysis of the participants' ratings during the experiment is presented. Correlates between the EEG signal frequencies and the participants' ratings are investigated. Methods and results are presented for single-trial classification of arousal, valence, and like/dislike ratings using the modalities of EEG, peripheral physiological signals, and multimedia content analysis. Finally, decision fusion of the classification results from different modalities is performed. The data set is made publicly available and we encourage other researchers to use it for testing their own affective state estimation methods.

Abstract:The Child Mind Institute (CMI) Healthy Brain Network (HBN) project has recorded phenotypic, behavioral, and neuroimaging data from ~5,000 children and young adults between the ages of 5 and 21. Here, we present "analysis-ready" data from its high-density (128-channel) electroencephalographic (EEG) recording sessions formatted as Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) datasets (HBN-EEG) with behavioral and task-condition events annotated using Hierarchical Event Descriptors (HED), making it analysis-ready for many purposes, without 'forensic' search for unreported details. We also ensured individual data files data and event integrity and marked inconsistencies. HBN-EEG sessions include six tasks, three with no participant behavioral input and three including button press responses following task instructions. Openly available participant information includes age, gender, and four psychopathology dimensions (internalizing, externalizing, attention, and p-factor) derived from bifactor model of questionnaire data. Currently, HBN-EEG data from more than 2,600 participants is freely available on NEMAR (nemar.org) and OpenNeuro in the form of nine dataset releases, with further dataset releases to follow.

Abstract:Background: One of the goals of neuropsychology is to understand the brain mechanisms underlying aspects of attention and cognitive control. Several tasks have been developed as a part of this body of research, however their results are not always consistent. A reliable comparison of the data and a synthesis of study conclusions has been precluded by multiple methodological differences. Here, we describe a publicly available, high-density electroencephalography (EEG) dataset obtained from 42 healthy young adults while they performed 3 cognitive tasks: (i) an extended multi-source interference task; (ii) a 3-stimuli oddball task; (iii) a control, simple reaction task; and (iv) a resting-state protocol. Demographic and psychometric information are included within the dataset. Dataset validation: First, data validation confirmed acceptable quality of the obtained EEG signals. Typical event-related potential (ERP) waveforms were obtained, as expected for attention and cognitive control tasks (i.e., N200, P300, N450). Behavioral results showed the expected progression of reaction times and error rates, which confirmed the effectiveness of the applied paradigms. Conclusions: This dataset is well suited for neuropsychological research regarding common and distinct mechanisms involved in different cognitive tasks. Using this dataset, researchers can compare a wide range of classical EEG/ERP features across tasks for any selected subset of electrodes. At the same time, 128-channel EEG recording allows for source localization and detailed connectivity studies. Neurophysiological measures can be correlated with additional psychometric data obtained from the same participants. This dataset can also be used to develop and verify novel analytical and classification approaches that can advance the field of deep/machine learning algorithms, recognition of single-trial ERP responses to different task conditions, and detection of EEG/ERP features for use in brain-computer interface applications.

Abstract:We describe the experimental procedures for a dataset that we have made publicly available at <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2617084" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a> in mat (Mathworks, Natick, USA) and csv formats. This dataset contains electroencephalographic recordings of 12 subjects listening to music with and without a passive head-mounted display, that is, a head-mounted display which does not include any electronics at the exception of a smartphone. The electroencephalographic headset consisted of 16 electrodes. Data were recorded during a pilot experiment taking place in the GIPSA-lab, Grenoble, France, in 2017 (Cattan and al, 2018). Abstract:Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provide humans a new communication channel by encoding and decoding brain activities. Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI stands out among many BCI paradigms because of its non-invasiveness, little user training, and high information transfer rate (ITR). However, the use of conductive gel and bulky hardware in the traditional Electroencephalogram (EEG) method hinder the application of SSVEP-based BCIs. Besides, continuous visual stimulation in long time use will lead to visual fatigue and pose a new challenge to the practical application. This study provides an open dataset, which is collected based on a wearable SSVEP-based BCI system, and comprehensively compares the SSVEP data obtained by wet and dry electrodes. The dataset consists of 8-channel EEG data from 102 healthy subjects performing a 12-target SSVEP-based BCI task. For each subject, 10 consecutive blocks were recorded using wet and dry electrodes, respectively. The dataset can be used to investigate the performance of wet and dry electrodes in SSVEP-based BCIs. Besides, the dataset provides sufficient data for developing new target identification algorithms to improve the performance of wearable SSVEP-based BCIs.

Abstract:This paper described the collection of multi-modal physiological signals, which include electroencephalography, electrocardiograph (ECG), photoplethysmography, electrodermal activity, temperature, and accelerometer data, recorded from 89 healthy college students during resting state, the emotion induction and recovery, and a set of cognitive function assessment tasks. Emotion, sleep, cognition, depression, mood, and other factors were evaluated through different methods, and were included in this dataset. Six emotions (neutral, fear, sad, happy, anger, and disgust) were induced by movie clips. The cognitive functions such as sustained attention, response inhibition, working memory, and strategy use, were quantitatively measured by Cambridge neuropsychological test automatic battery. The sleep ECG was collected the night before the emotion-induction experiment, and the sleep quality was analysed based on the sleep ECG. After the experiment, the participants were required to fill in questionnaires to evaluate the emotion regulation strategies, depression score, recent mood, and sleep quality index. The database can not only be directly used for the research of emotion recognition on multi-modal physiological signals, but also can further explore the interactions between emotion, cognition, and sleep.
Reporting existing datasets for automatic epilepsy diagnosis and seizure detection

Abstract:More than 50 million individuals are affected by epilepsy, a chronic neurological disorder characterized by unprovoked, recurring seizures and psychological symptoms. Researchers are working to automatically detect or predict epileptic episodes through Electroencephalography (EEG) signal analysis, and machine, and deep learning methods. Good quality, open-source, and free EEG data acts as a catalyst in this ongoing battle to manage this disease. This article presents 40+ publicly available EEG datasets for adult and pediatric human populations from 2001-2023. A comparative analysis and discussion on open and private EEG datasets have been done based on objective parameters in this domain. Bonn and CHB-MIT remain the benchmark datasets used for the automatic detection of epileptic and seizure EEG signals. Meta-data has also been released for large EEG data like CHB-MIT. This article will be updated every year to report the progress and changing trends in the development of EEG datasets in this field.

Abstract:In the quest for understanding human executive function, eye movements represent a unique insight into how we process and comprehend our environment. Eye movements reveal patterns in how we focus, navigate, and make decisions across various contexts. The proposed dataset includes electrooculography (EOG) signals from 27 healthy subjects, capturing both vertical and horizontal eye movements. The recorded signals were obtained during the video-watching stage of the Leiden Navigation Test, designed to assess spatial navigation abilities. In addition to other data, the dataset includes scores from the Mini- Mental State Examination and the Wayfinding Questionnaire. The dataset comprises carefully curated components, including relevant information, the Mini-Mental State Examination scores, and the Wayfinding Questionnaire scores, encompassing navigation, orientation, distance estimation, spatial anxiety, as well as raw and processed EOG signals. These assessments contribute more information about the participants' cognitive function and navigational abilities. This dataset can be valuable for researchers investigating spatial navigation abilities through EOG signal analysis.

Abstract:Emotion recognition (ER) technology is an integral part for developing innovative applications such as drowsiness detection and health monitoring that plays a pivotal role in contemporary society. This study delves into ER using electroencephalography (EEG), within immersive virtual reality (VR) environments. There are four main stages in our proposed methodology including data acquisition, pre-processing, feature extraction, and emotion classification. Acknowledging the limitations of existing 2D datasets, we introduce a groundbreaking 3D VR dataset to elevate the precision of emotion elicitation. Leveraging the Interaxon Muse headband for EEG recording and Oculus Quest 2 for VR stimuli, we meticulously recorded data from 40 participants, prioritizing subjects without reported mental illnesses. Pre-processing entails rigorous cleaning, uniform truncation, and the application of a Savitzky-Golay filter to the EEG data. Feature extraction encompasses a comprehensive analysis of metrics such as power spectral density, correlation, rational and divisional asymmetry, and power spectrum. To ensure the robustness of our model, we employed a 10-fold cross-validation, revealing an average validation accuracy of 85.54\%, with a noteworthy maximum accuracy of 90.20\% in the best fold. Subsequently, the trained model demonstrated a commendable test accuracy of 82.03\%, promising favorable outcomes.

Abstract:Affective computing based on electroencephalogram (EEG) has gained increasing attention for its objectivity in measuring emotional states. While positive emotions play a crucial role in various real-world applications, such as human-computer interactions, the state-of-the-art EEG datasets have primarily focused on negative emotions, with less consideration given to positive emotions. Meanwhile, these datasets usually have a relatively small sample size, limiting exploration of the important issue of cross-subject affective computing. The proposed Finer-grained Affective Computing EEG Dataset (FACED) aimed to address these issues by recording 32-channel EEG signals from 123 subjects. During the experiment, subjects watched 28 emotion-elicitation video clips covering nine emotion categories (amusement, inspiration, joy, tenderness; anger, fear, disgust, sadness, and neutral emotion), providing a fine-grained and balanced categorization on both the positive and negative sides of emotion. The validation results show that emotion categories can be effectively recognized based on EEG signals at both the intra-subject and the cross-subject levels. The FACED dataset is expected to contribute to developing EEG-based affective computing algorithms for real-world applications.

EIT-1M: One Million EEG-Image-Text Pairs for Human Visual-textual Recognition and More

Abstract:Recently, electroencephalography (EEG) signals have been actively incorporated to decode brain activity to visual or textual stimuli and achieve object recognition in multi-modal AI. Accordingly, endeavors have been focused on building EEG-based datasets from visual or textual single-modal stimuli. However, these datasets offer limited EEG epochs per category, and the complex semantics of stimuli presented to participants compromise their quality and fidelity in capturing precise brain activity. The study in neuroscience unveils that the relationship between visual and textual stimulus in EEG recordings provides valuable insights into the brain's ability to process and integrate multi-modal information simultaneously. Inspired by this, we propose a novel large-scale multi-modal dataset, named EIT-1M, with over 1 million EEG-image-text pairs. Our dataset is superior in its capacity of reflecting brain activities in simultaneously processing multi-modal information. To achieve this, we collected data pairs while participants viewed alternating sequences of visual-textual stimuli from 60K natural images and category-specific texts. Common semantic categories are also included to elicit better reactions from participants' brains. Meanwhile, response-based stimulus timing and repetition across blocks and sessions are included to ensure data diversity. To verify the effectiveness of EIT-1M, we provide an in-depth analysis of EEG data captured from multi-modal stimuli across different categories and participants, along with data quality scores for transparency. We demonstrate its validity on two tasks: 1) EEG recognition from visual or textual stimuli or both and 2) EEG-to-visual generation.

Abstract:The prevalence of mental fatigue is a noteworthy phenomenon that can affect individuals across diverse professions and working routines. This paper provides a comprehensive dataset of physiological signals obtained from 23 participants during their professional work and questionnaires to analyze mental fatigue. The questionnaires included demographic information and Chalder Fatigue Scale scores indicating mental and physical fatigue. Both physiological signal measurements and the Chalder Fatigue Scale were performed in two sessions, morning and evening. The present dataset encompasses diverse physiological signals, including electroencephalogram (EEG), blood volume pulse (BVP), electrodermal activity (EDA), heart rate (HR), skin temperature (TEMP), and 3-axis accelerometer (ACC) data. The NeuroSky MindWave EEG device was used for brain signals, and the Empatica E4 smart wristband was used for other signals. Measurements were carried out on individuals from four different occupational groups, such as academicians, technicians, computer engineers, and kitchen workers. The provision of comprehensive metadata supplements the dataset, thereby promoting inquiries about the neurophysiological concomitants of mental fatigue, autonomic activity patterns, and the repercussions of a cognitive burden on human proficiency in actual workplace settings. The accessibility of the aforementioned dataset serves to facilitate progress in the field of mental fatigue research while also laying the groundwork for the creation of customized fatigue evaluation techniques and interventions in diverse professional domains.

Abstract:Affective computing focuses on instilling emotion awareness in machines. This area has attracted many researchers globally. However, the lack of an affective database based on physiological signals from the Asian continent has been reported. This is an important issue for ensuring inclusiveness and avoiding bias in this field. This paper introduces an emotion recognition database, the Asian Affective and Emotional State (A2ES) dataset, for affective computing research. The database comprises electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) recordings from 47 Asian participants of various ethnicities. The subjects were exposed to 25 carefully selected audio–visual stimuli to elicit specific targeted emotions. An analysis of the participants' self-assessment and a list of the 25 stimuli utilised are also presented in this work. Emotion recognition systems are built using ECG and PPG data; five machine learning algorithms: support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbour (KNN), naive Bayes (NB), decision tree (DT), and random forest (RF); and deep learning techniques. The performance of the systems built are presented and compared. The SVM was found to be the best learning algorithm for the ECG data, while RF was the best for the PPG data. The proposed database is available to other researchers.
