Abstract:Background: Health care inequity in remote and rural Indigenous communities often involves difficulty accessing health care services and supplies. Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, or drones, offer a potentially cost-effective method for reducing inequity by removing geographic barriers, increasing timeliness, and improving accessibility of supplies, equipment, and remote care. Methods: We assessed the feasibility of drones for delivery of supplies, medical equipment, and medical treatment across multiple platforms, including drone fleet development and testing; payload system integration (custom fixed-mount, winch, and parachute); and medical delivery simulations (COVID-19 test kit delivery and return, delivery of personal protective equipment, and remote ultrasound delivery and testing). Results: Drone operational development has led to a finalized, scalable fleet of small to large drones with functional standard operating procedures across a range of scenarios, and custom payload systems including a fixed-mount, winch-based and parachute-based system. Simulation scenarios were successful, with COVID-19 test swabs returned to the lab with no signal degradation and a remote ultrasound successfully delivered and remotely guided in the field. Discussion/conclusions: Drone-based medical delivery models offer an innovative approach to addressing longstanding issues of health care access and equity and are particularly relevant in the context of SARS-CoV-2.

One of the critical applications of drones is in the field of healthcare is the delivery of medical supplies. In case of severe natural calamities, only a drone is suitable for providing the basic essential supplies that can save the lives of constrained survivors. In rural and underdeveloped areas, a drone is ideal for delivery. The usage of a medical drone is not restricted as it can easily be used in day-to-day urban and sub-urban areas. It is an efficient method to deliver medicines and aid to patients and those in need.

Abstract:Drones are increasingly being used globally for the support of healthcare programmes. Madagascar, Malawi and Senegal are among a group of early adopters piloting the use of bi-directional transport drones for health systems in sub-Saharan Africa. This article presents the experiences as well as the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT analysis) of these country projects. Methods for addressing regulatory, feasibility, acceptability, and monitoring and evaluation issues are presented to guide future implementations. Main recommendations for governments, implementers, drone providers and funders include (1) developing more reliable technologies, (2) thorough vetting of drone providers’ capabilities during the selection process, (3) using and strengthening local capacity, (4) building in-country markets and businesses to maintain drone operations locally, (5) coordinating efforts among all stakeholders under government leadership, (6) implementing and identifying funding for long-term projects beyond pilots, and (7) evaluating impacts via standardised indicators. Sharing experiences and evidence from ongoing projects is needed to advance the use of drones for healthcare.

Abstract:The efficient and timely delivery of pharmaceuticals is critical, particularly in regions with dispersed populations and challenging logistics. Inclement weather often disrupts ground transport, complicating the consistent supply of essential medications. Advanced air mobility (AAM), particularly through the use of drones, presents a promising solution to these logistical challenges by enabling smaller, more frequent deliveries to low density populated places and bypassing traditional transport constraints. This study evaluates the potential benefits of AAM for pharmaceutical transport in North Dakota (ND). The authors developed a comprehensive GIS and optimization framework to identify optimal locations for logistical centers and routes for drone and truck transport. The study introduces a person-years-saved (PYS) metric to rank the potential for AAM deployments to foster healthcare improvements in underserved communities. Moreover, the study found that drone trips were significantly more cost-effective and efficient than truck trips, with trucks being 2.3 times more expensive and having a 2.8 times higher underutilization rate. The study concludes with recommendations for regulatory support and future research to validate and expand the application of AAM in pharmaceutical logistics, contributing to improved healthcare delivery and operational efficiency in often overlooked rural populations. These insights provide a foundation for the practical implementation of AAM technologies, emphasizing their potential to revolutionize pharmaceutical logistics in challenging environments.

Abstract:In the past few years, drones have been adopted as a novel delivery tool towards medical supplies, improving delivery service efficiency due to fast speed and neglection of geographical limitations. However, the flight endurance of a battery‐operated drone is limited for long‐distance medical supplies delivery operations. Recharging stations, as a kind of drone facility, allow multiple stops for drones to supplement the power to overcome the flight‐range limitations. This paper studies drone‐assisted long‐distance medical supplies delivery with recharging stations in rural communities by a mixed integer linear programming model. To illustrate the applicability of this model and explore the key factors influencing delivery efficiency of medical supplies, a case study from China is conducted. The results indicate that enhancements on the speed of a truck or a drone can yield considerable delivery cost reduction. In addition, drone‐recharging technology advances can improve delivery efficiency of medical supplies in rural communities.

Where is the bottleneck? Drones and the paradoxes of digitising medical supplies in Ghana's landscapes of care

Abstract:Implemented in several African countries, medical drones have emerged as a major infrastructural innovation in national healthcare systems and are widely hailed for improving, if not revolutionising, access to medicine and care for rural populations. Being based on digitally driven, autonomous aviation systems, drones are part of wider efforts to use digital technologies in health systems. In this article, we explore the paradoxes that emerge from definitions of logistics as the bottleneck of quality healthcare. Based on ethnographic research in Ghana, we explore the ways in which drone systems have been built up and justified by private and political actors and used by pharmacists and other healthcare professionals along the supply chain as serving emergencies. However, they have transformed the existing landscape of medical supply chiefly because of the multiple ways in which emergencies are defined. We find that while the introduction of drones has dynamised supply chain processes but also reveals structural bottlenecks, e.g. the lack of medical products and malfunctioning institutions. Situated at the interface of critical studies on infrastructures and medical anthropology, our article contributes to the thriving scholarship on digital innovation in healthcare.

Abstract:Purpose: This research study investigated the impact of Zipline Medical Drone Delivery on the operations of last-mile healthcare facilities in northern Ghana. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research study adopted an exploratory research design to determine the impact of Zipline’s medical drone delivery on the operations of last-mile healthcare facilities in Northern Ghana. An online survey questionnaire was deployed to collect quantitative data from 159 trained employees of last-mile health facilities who were selected through a purposive sampling technique from last-mile drone-served healthcare facilities. Findings: The study established that drone delivery speed, logistics efficiency and availability of drone delivery resources significantly impacted zipline delivery of medical commodities to last-mile public healthcare facilities in Northern Ghana, reducing commodity delivery lead-time and improving access to essential healthcare supplies for efficient service delivery. Research Limitation/Implications: This research focused mainly on the impact of drone delivery of medical commodities on the operations of last-mile public healthcare facilities in Northern Ghana. Practical Implications: The results of this study show that by enhancing drone delivery speed, logistics efficiency and drone resource availability, the operations of public healthcare facilities can be improved by ensuring that essential medicines are made available, patient waiting time is significantly reduced and outpatient services are improved. Social Implication: The study recommends the establishment of a Zipline-Administrators partnership which will eventually result in a reduction of medical commodity lead-time, improved accessibility of patients to essential health commodity supplies and general cost savings to the community. Originality/Value/Novelty: Although drone technology has been the subject of numerous studies in Ghana, none has investigated the impact of medical commodity drone delivery services on the operations of last-mile healthcare facilities in Northern Ghana. This study therefore explored the impact of drone delivery services from the last-mile healthcare facilities’ perspective.

Abstract:In developing countries, last-mile delivery of medical products is a challenge, especially in hilly and rural areas where there is no road connectivity. As helicopters or other air services are not affordable all the time, drones can be used for the supply of medical products. They are cost-effective as compared to other air or road transport. However, the carrying capacity of drone is less, it is not able to carry heavier payloads. Also, operating drones requires trained operators, and it is a new venture in a developing country so possibilities of confusion and lack of clarity on operating procedures are there. Drones are becoming increasingly reliable for the health care delivery. This narrative review explores the use of drones in healthcare delivery globally.

While supported by the local field-side forces, it is going through delays and getting affected by the delays in medical treatment. Why this failure in medical support? To avoid this delay, I have come up with a trend in technology in real life to send things like oxygen to the nearby hospital and make it emergency support on an urgent basis. At the same time, we can look for college and industry, food, and grocery items that we can utilize for the same methods. We can make it using AI technology used in the drone system and so by using different scales of sensors and cameras for recognition for bill service for auto-detection and bill payment as well. Nowadays, most people try to use their outside food purchases quickly, so we can get it via air drone easily without delay. This process is unintentionally free and GPS-based, with an advantage system to track the location. And confirmation of customer detection can help to unlock the lock-unlock the drone's locked body, get material, and lock the door once service is received. If there is any unwanted attack, it will be updated with the tracking system. There is an anti-drone system used here. This activity can be avoided.

Abstract:Ambulance getting stuck in traffic has resulted in countless precious lives. Statistics have shown that especially in the Indian traffic conditions the chances of such scenarios are at peak. In this paper we are providing a solution to speed up the delivery procedure of first aid kit in situations including but not limited to (i) Ambulance getting stuck in traffic, (ii) War torn regions with limited medical supply etc. From the minor ailment to the more serious injury a first aid kit can help reduce the risk of infection or the severity of the injury. With drones changing the face of human technology, it can be used in the medical field to assert timely delivery of essential first aid to people in not easily accessible regions. When the user books an ambulance for the victim, if the ambulance is stuck in traffic, Automated drones can deliver personalized first aid kit to the user location so that the victim can be diagnosed by the remedy medicines with assistance of doctor using web app till the ambulance arrives to the victim location and takes the victim to hospital. Users can also request pharmacy for immediate remedy medicines in case of emergency.

Abstract:COVID-19 pandemic is a situation where every person is looking for solution towards disease. Once a person tested positive for COVID-19, he/she has to get admitted in hospital or home isolation as per the available resources and guidance by doctors and local authorities. The hospitals are equipped with necessary requirements for patients, but home isolation requires various daily usage medical equipment, medicines and data reporting. Authorities are struggling a lot to supply medical aids and other required necessary items to be delivered at home isolation persons. For such type of pandemic situation, we have proposed a Medical Kit Delivery Drone (MKDD) algorithm to deliver medical aids, lightweight equipment and data reports from hospitals to home isolations. The proposed algorithm is very well simulated in CupCarbon simulator and obtained results are compared with state-of-the-art algorithms like M63P–H7DM, GHSP-D-19-00119, MedART & PMC9451063. We observed that our proposed algorithm achieved the highest date rate in payload delivery time, payload weight, speed & maximum distance covered by various drones.

Abstract:In developing countries, lack of access to roads is critical for medical supplies like vaccines and drugs. Air transport like a helicopter is expensive and not affordable. The success of drones in the fields of ecology and environment makes us believe that they can also be used in the field of Public Health as medical couriers. The important strength of using drones is its potential to decrease the travel time for diagnosis and treatment. They are a cost-effective alternative to road transport in difficult terrains. Drones can be used in the transport of blood from the blood bank to the place of surgery and that of specimens from hard-to-reach areas to the labs in nearby towns. They can deliver essential medicines like anti-venom for snake bite and dog bite and prevent deaths. Drones can be employed in disaster relief operations for rescuing victims and in the delivery of food, water, and medicines. Organs can be transported in a short time bypassing the busy traffic. However, operating drones require trained staff and the lack of infrastructure like runway is a potential problem. Drones cannot carry heavier payloads or deliver goods long distances. Drones in the hands of terrorist groups may be weaponized and used for terror attacks. Medical drones may be mistaken for military Drone and attacked by armed forces.

Abstract:The intensified scramble for the digitalisation of healthcare across Africa, coupled with the general drive for digital economies, has ushered in digital health innovations that are reconfiguring national discourses on humanitarian and development contexts. Through these innovations, imaginaries of health have become entangled with aspirations for universal health coverage (UHC) and the actualisation of the health-related sustainable development goals (SDGs). Among these innovations, drones promise to leapfrog and transform conventional African healthcare systems, which have suffered from structural bottlenecks for years, offering citizens on the margins of care critical biomedical gazes. By using drones, African states hope to improve revenue collection, curb corruption, redress health insecurities and deliver life-saving medicines, vaccines and laboratory diagnostics through a last-mile distribution schedule. Ethnographic fieldwork from 2022 to 2023 in Ghana and Malawi on the use of drones found distortions to the health workforce, disruptions to health work, and a pervasive internal brain drain, all exacerbating health-worker shortages. This paper explores how drones are reconfiguring health work and its available labour force in practice amid persistent shortages of health-workers.

The system is designed to have the short distance flying with more accuracy at less time which carrying a pay load of 3kg this will be helpful to achieve fastest medication at the earlier time.GPS system is used for tracking the location of the patient.

Abstract:This paper addresses the drone-aided delivery and pickup planning of medication and test kits for patients with chronic diseases who are required to visit clinics for routine health examinations and/or refill medicine in rural areas. For routine healthcare services, the work proposes two models: the first model is to find the optimal number of drone center locations using the set covering approach, and the second model is the multi-depot vehicle routing problem with pickup and delivery requests minimizing the operating cost of drones in which drones deliver medicine to patients and pick up exam kits on the way back such as blood and urine samples. In order to improve computational performance of the proposed models, a preprocessing algorithm, a Partition method, and a Lagrangian Relaxation (LR) method are developed as solution approaches. A cost-benefit analysis method is developed as a tool to analyze the benefits of drone-aided healthcare service. The work is tested on a numerical example to show its applicability.

The system integrates advanced algorithms to optimize route planning, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of medications to designated locations. The AI component enables the drone to adapt to real-time variables such as weather conditions and traffic, enhancing the reliability and responsiveness of the delivery process. This project addresses the challenges of traditional medication distribution, offering a futuristic and intelligent approach to healthcare logistics through the deployment of AI-enabled autonomous drones for efficient and timely medication delivery. The proposed system integrates AI algorithms for real-time route optimization, obstacle avoidance, and decision-making, enabling the drone to autonomously navigate complex environments and deliver essential medical supplies such as first aid kits, defibrillators, and medications to the point of need. Through the utilization of machine learning techniques, the drone continuously learns from its interactions with the environment, enhancing its adaptability and performance over time. Abstract:Drones have been pioneered and used in the military, however, only recently non-military drones have been introduced. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into focus the potential value of drones in moving medical supplies. With the onset of social distancing policies and quarantine regulations, the efficiency of traditional logistics systems has been limited. Several companies have recently accelerated their development in this domain, conducting pilot projects at pace, paving the way for the future of the medical logistics supply chain. In this review, we examine both narrative and grey literature for in and out of hospital settings, in order to describe the current state of drone technology in healthcare around the world and some of the most cutting-edge examples of how drones can benefits patients, clinicians and the wider public. We investigate the economic viability and barriers to adopting drones at scale which include regulatory hurdles, public perception and safety of drone technologies, and propose how to overcome these challenges. Further work should look at quantifying the impact and outcomes of how such a service could impact the health outcomes of patients and clinical efficiency. This review aims to equip the National Health Service and more broadly other healthcare systems around the world with the tools to embrace and implement this novel and upcoming technology.

Abstract:Introduction: Advances in technology have revolutionized the medical field and changed the way healthcare is delivered. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are the next wave of technological advancements that have the potential to make a huge splash in clinical medicine. UAVs, originally developed for military use, are making their way into the public and private sector. Because they can be flown autonomously and can reach almost any geographical location, the significance of UAVs are becoming increasingly apparent in the medical field. Materials and methods: We conducted a comprehensive review of the English language literature via the PubMed and Google Scholar databases using search terms "unmanned aerial vehicles," "UAVs," and "drone." Preference was given to clinical trials and review articles that addressed the keywords and clinical medicine. Results: Potential applications of UAVs in medicine are broad. Based on articles identified, we grouped UAV application in medicine into three categories: (1) Prehospital Emergency Care; (2) Expediting Laboratory Diagnostic Testing; and (3) Surveillance. Currently, UAVs have been shown to deliver vaccines, automated external defibrillators, and hematological products. In addition, they are also being studied in the identification of mosquito habitats as well as drowning victims at beaches as a public health surveillance modality. Conclusions: These preliminary studies shine light on the possibility that UAVs may help to increase access to healthcare for patients who may be otherwise restricted from proper care due to cost, distance, or infrastructure. As with any emerging technology and due to the highly regulated healthcare environment, the safety and effectiveness of this technology need to be thoroughly discussed. Despite the many questions that need to be answered, the application of drones in medicine appears to be promising and can both increase the quality and accessibility of healthcare.
