Abstract:The realization of durable and efficient oxygen evolution reactions (OER) at large current densities and low overpotentials is of significant importance but remains a great challenge. In this study, a CoFe/Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 /CC (CF//CC) heterogeneous structure was fabricated by isolating CoFe/Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 S (CF/CFS) particles locked in nitrogen/sulfur codoped carbon nanotubes (NS-CNTs). Appreciable oxygen evolution reaction activity and durability was achieved with an ultralow overpotential of 110 mV at 10 mA•cm −2 . The operation was stable for 300 h at a current density of 500 mA•cm −2 . The structure was then assembled into a zinc-air battery (ZAB), which delivered a high power density of 194 mW•cm −2 , a specific capacity of 837.3 mAh•g Zn -1 , and stable operation for 788 h without obvious voltage attenuation and altered morphology. The electronic interactions were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which revealed that both the bimetal components and the synergistic effect at the interface stimulated the transfer of Co and Fe sites to higher chemical valence states. Theoretical calculations indicated that the synergistic effect of the bimetal components, build-in interfacial potential, and surface chemical reconstruction adjusted the Fermi level to optimize the thermodynamic formation of O* to OOH*, thus enhancing the intrinsic activity.

MOF-on-MOF-derived FeCo@NC OER&ORR bifunctional electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries

Abstract:Zinc-air batteries, as one of the emerging areas of interest in the quest for sustainable energy solutions, are hampered by the intrinsically sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and still suffer from the issues of low energy density. Herein, we report a MOF-on-MOF-derived electrocatalyst, FeCo@NC-II, designed to efficiently catalyze both ORR (Ehalf = 0.907 V) and OER (Ej=10 = 1.551 V) within alkaline environments, surpassing esteemed noble metal benchmarks (Pt/C and RuO2). Systematically characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of iron and cobalt bimetallic and the optimized distribution of nitrogen configuration improved the charge distribution of the catalysts, which in turn optimized the adsorption / desorption of oxygenated intermediates accelerating the reaction kinetics. While the unique leaf-like core-shell morphology and excellent pore structure of the FeCo@NC-II catalyst caused the improvement of mass transfer efficiency, electrical conductivity and stability. The core and shell of the precursor constructed through the MOF-on-MOF strategy achieved the effect of 1 + 1 > 2 in mutual cooperation. Further application to zinc-air batteries (ZABs) yielded remarkable power density (212.4 mW/cm2), long cycle (more than 150 h) stability and superior energy density (∼1060 Wh/kg Zn). This work provides a methodology and an idea for the design, synthesis and optimization of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts.
Fabrication of abundant oxygen vacancies in MOF-derived (Fe,Co) 3 O 4 for oxygen evolution reaction and as an air cathode for zinc-air batteries

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) find wide-ranging applications owing to their adjustable structures, diverse compositions, and large specific surface area. In this work, MOFs materials were grown in situ on carbon cloth, yielding self-supported electrodes V O -(Fe,Co) 3 O 4 @CC rich in oxygen vacancies through a simple high-temperature annealing treatment utilizing NaBH 4 as an etchant. Thus the resulting self-supported electrode V O -(Fe,Co) 3 O 4 @CC exhibited excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, achieving an overpotential of merely 288 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , along with a low Tafel slope of 31.39 mV dec -1 , and demonstrating robust long-term activity and stability. In addition, a liquid zinc-air battery was assembled utilizing the prepared V O -(Fe,Co) 3 O 4 @CC as an air cathode, achieving a high open-circuit voltage of 1.46 V and a high peak power density of 89.06 mW cm −2 , and it maintained excellent cycling stability during cyclic charging and discharging (with a current density of 2 mA cm −2 ) over a 32 h period. Meanwhile, the self-supported electrode V O -(Fe,Co) 3 O 4 @CC served as an air cathode for assembling an all-solid-state flexible zinc-air battery (ZAB), demonstrating a high peak power density (38.21 mW cm −2 ) and exhibiting favorable cycling stability. This experiment offers insights into the potential application of MOF-derived electrocatalysts in water decomposition and zinc-air batteries.

Abstract:The Fe−Co oxide nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen‐doped carbon nanosheet structure are prepared. The robust covalent bonding guarantees the stability of the nanostructure, while the synergetic effect of Fe/Co co‐doped increases the catalytic active sites and facilitates the adsorption and desorption of oxygen molecules. The development of cathode materials with controllable physicochemical structures and explicit catalytic sites is important in rechargeable Zn–air batteries (ZABs). Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered increasing attention owing to their facile synthesis methods, ordered pore structure, and selectivity of functional groups. However, the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) or oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) inhibit their practical applications in ZABs. Herein, nucleophilic substitution is adopted to synthesize pyridine bi‐triazine covalent organic framework (denoted as O‐COF), and meanwhile, ionothermal conversion synthesis is employed to load MOx (M=Fe, Co) onto carbon nanosheet (named as FeCo@NC) to modulate the electronic structure. The Fe, Co‐N codoped carbon material possesses a large portion of pyridinic N and M‐N, high graphitization, and a larger BET surface area. An outstanding bifunctional activity has been exhibited in FeCo@NC, which provides a small voltage at 10 mA cm−2 for OER (E10 = 1.67 V) and a remarkable half‐wave voltage for ORR (E1/2 = 0.86 V). More impressively, when assembling ZABs, it displays notable rate performance, significant specific capacity (783.9 mAh gZn−1), and satisfactory long‐term endurance. This method of regulating covalent organic framework and ionothermal synthesis can be extended to design diverse catalysts.

Abstract:To achieve broad commercialization of rechargeable metal-air batteries, the development of non-precious metal-based bi-functional oxygen electrocatalysts is critical. In this study, we prepared N,S co-doped porous carbon materials containing Co9S8 nanoparticles (Co9S8/NSC) through a one-step pyrolysis process. The process involved the pyrolysis of polydopamine (PDA) coated Co-formic acid framework (Co-FF) derived Co3O4 and thiourea. The improved catalyst Co9S8/NSC-1 exhibited satisfactory long-term durability and superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, the half-wave potential (E1/2) of ORR reached 0.83 V, and the OER overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 (η10) was 300 mV. The zinc−air battery (ZAB) based on Co9S8/NSC-1 assembly had a maximum power density of 102.0 mW cm−2 and the cycle life has reached 500 cycles. The material preparation method was simple, environmentally friendly and inexpensive, providing a feasible strategy for the development of non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts.

Optimized heterostructure of FeS/Ni3S2 enabling robust oxygen evolution reaction for Zn-Air batteries

Abstract:Construction heterointerfaces of transition metal sulfides is an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by modulating their electronic structures. Further, incorporating these sulfides with a carbon-based support can improve their catalytic stability by preventing metal active site demetallization and dissolution. Herein, we utilized a combined hard template-pyrolysis method to construct heterostructure of FeS and Ni3S2 encapsulated in N-doped carbon (FeS/Ni3S2-x/NC) and optimized the heterostructure by adjusting the Fe and Ni precursor ratio. Largely exposed FeS/Ni3S2 heterointerfaces enabled a high OER catalytic activity. Especially, the optimized heterostructure of FeS/Ni3S2-2/NC with a larger electrochemical active area and more activity sites (Ni3+) afforded a small OER overpotential of 270 mV at 10 mA cm−2, and exhibited a negligible voltage loss for 35-hour operation at 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, FeS/Ni3S2-2/NC was employed in rechargeable zinc-air batteries as the air cathode, displaying a superior charge performance and operational stability over 300 h at 5 mA cm−2. This work provides a promising design and engineering strategy for transition metal sulfides as effective OER catalysts.

g-C3N4 promoted MOF-derived Fe single atoms anchored on N-doped hierarchically porous carbon for high-performance Zn-air batteries

Abstract:Exploring efficient, easy-to-manufacture, and inexpensive bifunctional electrocatalysts with abundant accessible active sites is crucial for rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we report the strategy consisting of the space confinement and pore-making engineering to fabricate single-atom catalyst enriched with Fe-N4 sites anchored on N-doped hierarchically porous carbon (Fe-NC-C3N4). The optimized Fe-NC-C3N4 exhibits excellent oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) activities with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.90 V vs. RHE and a promising low overpotential of 0.305 V vs. RHE at 10 mA·cm-2 in alkaline electrolyte. These superior catalytic activities are attributed to the combined effect between the atomic active sites and the well-balanced micro-meso-macropore structures. The homemade liquid Zn-air battery (ZAB) assembled with Fe-NC-C3N4 catalyst displays a power density of 133.59 mW·cm-2 and a significant energy density of 882.58 mAh·g-1, exceeding those of the equipment with commercial Pt/C-RuO2 (56.82 mW·cm-2 and 643.87 mAh·g-1, respectively). Particularly, the corresponding flexible wearable ZAB manifests outstanding foldability and cyclical stability. This work opens a new perspective for the structural design of single-atom catalysts in the energy storage and conversion area.
Facile construction of hierarchically porous carbon nanofibers modified by FeCu/FeF3 heterojunction for oxygen electrocatalysis in liquid and flexible Zn-air batteries

Abstract:Highly efficiency, excellent stability and low-cost catalysts equipping with uniform distribution and enough active sites are rather important for zinc-air batteries (ZABs). In this study, inspired by hollow bubble structured carbon materials and heterostructure characteristics, the hierarchically porous carbon nanofibers with 3D network structure including heterojunction FeCu/FeF3 active nanoparticles and enriched N, F co-doping (FeCu/FeF3@HPCNFs) are prepared for oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER). The hierarchically porous structure inside the nanofibers combining with the hollow bubble structured carbon outside the nanofibers together can increase the specific surface area and carbon edge defects of the composite materials, thus effectively accelerating mass transfer at three-phase interfaces. Meanwhile, the heterojunction FeCu/FeF3 and unique heteroatoms co-doping can reduce charge transport resistance and accelerate catalytic reaction rate. Thus the FeCu/FeF3@HPCNFs display exceedingly good electrocatalytic performance for ORR (EORR, 1/2 = 0.87 V vs. RHE) and OER (ηOER, 10 = 377 mV at 10 mA cm−2). More importantly, both the aqueous rechargeable ZABs and flexible foldable solid-state ZABs assembled with the FeCu/FeF3@HPCNFs catalyst reveal a outstanding maximum power density and excellent long-term cycling stability. In addition, the theoretical analysis also reveals the FeCu/FeF3@HPCNFs electrocatalyst can reasonably adjust the electron distribution, effectively lower the reaction barrier of intermediate and greatly reduce OER/ORR overpotential. All in all, the work will open up a new avenue for facile construction of highly active, structurally stable and cost-effective bi-functional catalysts for ZABs.

Fabrication of N and S co-doped lignin-based porous carbon aerogels loaded with FeCo alloys and their application to oxygen evolution and reduction reactions in Zn-air batteries

Abstract:Zn-air batteries are a highly promising clean energy sustainable conversion technology, and the design of dual-function electrocatalysts with excellent activity and stability is crucial for their development. In this work, FeCo alloy loaded biomass-based N and S co-doped carbon aerogels (FeCo@NS-LCA) were fabricated from chitosan and lignosulfonate-metal chelates via liquid nitrogen pre-frozen synergistic high-temperature carbonization with application in electrocatalytic reactions. The abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on lignosulfonates have a chelating effect on metal ions, which can avoid the aggregation of metal nanoparticles during carbonation and catalysis, facilitating the construction of a nanoconfinement catalytic system with biomass carbon as the domain-limiting body and FeCo nanoparticles as the active sites. FeCo@NS-LCA exhibited catalytic activity (E1/2 = 0.87 V, JL = 5.7 mA cm-2) comparable to the commercial Pt/C in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), excellent resistance to methanol toxicity and stability. Meanwhile, the overpotential of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was 324 mV, close to that of commercial RuO2 catalysts (351 mV). This study utilizes the coordination action of lignosulfonate to provide a novel and environmentally friendly method for the preparation of confined nano-catalysts and provides a new perspective for the high-value utilization of biomass resources.

The intertwined fibers with hierarchical nanopores facilitate the gas transportation, electrolyte infiltration and electron transfer. The large specific surface area exposes a high concentration of Fe-N-4/C sites embedded in the carbon matrix. Modulation of local atomic configurations by sulfur doping in Fe/SNCFs-NH3 catalyst leads to excellent ORR and enhanced OER activities. The as-synthesized Fe/SNCFs-NH3 catalyst demonstrates a positive half-wave potential of 0.89 V and a small Tafel slope of 70.82 mV dec(-1), outperforming the commercial Pt/C (0.86 V/94.74 mV dec(-1)) and most reported M-N-x/C (M = Fe, Co, Ni) catalysts. Abstract:The overuse of fossil fuels has led to energy shortage and environmental pollution. Zinc‐air batteries (ZABs) are considered to be one of the most potential renewable clean energy sources due to their high energy density, cost‐effective and environmentally friendly advantages. However, due to the lack of stable and efficient oxygen electrocatalysts, it is difficult for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to fully realize the effective conversion of chemistry and electric energy, which seriously affects the performance of zinc‐air batteries. Herein, Cobalt‐based composite catalyst CoP/CNF was prepared by electrospinning technology and applied to zinc‐air batteries. High power density and long‐term cycling stability of Zn‐air batteries are achieved due to the synergistic effect of transition metal phosphides and MOF‐derived M‐N‐C. The OER overpotential of CoP/CNF is 330 mV at 10 mA cm‐2 and the ORR half‐wave potential of CoP/CNF is 0.78 V under alkaline conditions. In addition, the ZAB assembled with CoP/CNF as the catalyst has a peak power density of 164 mW cm‐2 and an ultra‐long cycle stability of 1200 h at a current density of 5 mA cm‐2. Even at 10 mA cm‐2, the ZAB can maintain stable cycle up to 420 h.

3D Hollow Hierarchical Porous Carbon with Fe‐N4‐OH Single‐Atom Sites for High‐Performance Zn‐Air Batteries

Abstract:A hollow hierarchical porous ZIF8@FePMPDA‐920 catalyst with unique asymmetric Fe‐N4‐OH moieties is constructed via a combined approach following the order of polymer coating, electrostatic absorption, and pyrolysis, showing superior oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction activities. The homemade liquid and flexible solid‐state zinc‐air batteries demonstrate excellent performance in terms of desirable open‐circuit voltage, discharging specific capacity, and long‐term durability. The development of innovative and efficient Fe‐N‐C catalysts is crucial for the widespread application of zinc‐air batteries (ZABs), where the inherent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of Fe single‐atom sites needs to be optimized to meet the practical application. Herein, a three‐dimensional (3D) hollow hierarchical porous electrocatalyst (ZIF8@FePMPDA‐920) rich in asymmetric Fe‐N4‐OH moieties as the single atomic sites is reported. The Fe center is in a penta‐coordinated geometry with four N atoms and one O atom to form Fe‐N4‐OH configuration. Compared to conventional Fe‐N4 configuration, this unique structure can weaken the adsorption of intermediates by reducing the electron density of the Fe center for oxygen binding, which decreases the energy barrier of the rate‐determining steps (RDS) to accelerate the ORR and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes for ZABs. The rechargeable liquid ZABs (LZABs) equipped with ZIF8@FePMPDA‐920 display a high power density of 123.11 mW cm−2 and a long cycle life (300 h). The relevant flexible all‐solid‐state ZABs (FASSZABs) also display outstanding foldability and cyclical stability. This work provides a new perspective for the structural design of single‐atom catalysts in the energy conversion and storage areas.

Construction of Co/FeCo@Fe(Co) 3 O 4 heterojunction rich in oxygen vacancies derived from metal–organic frameworks using O 2 plasma as a high-performance bifunctional catalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Abstract:Developing high-efficient, good-durability, and low-cost bifunctional non-precious metal catalysts for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgent and significant for promoting the practical rechargeable zinc-air batteries (RZABs). Herein, N -doped carbon coated Co/(Co) 3 O 4 heterojunction rich in oxygen vacancies derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is successfully constructed by O 2 plasma treatment. The phase transition of Co/FeCo to FeCo oxide (Fe 3 O 4 /Co 3 O 4 ) mainly occurs on the surface of nanoparticles (NPs) during the O 2 plasma treatment, which can form rich oxygen vacancies simultaneously. The fabricated catalyst P-Co 3 Fe 1 /NC-700-10 with optimal O 2 plasma treatment time of 10 min can reduce the potential gap between the OER and ORR to 760 mV, which is much lower than commercial 20% Pt/C + RuO 2 (910 mV). Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the synergistic coupling between Co/FeCo alloy NPs and FeCo oxide layer can promote the ORR/OER performance. Both liquid electrolyte RZAB and flexible all-solid-state RZAB using P-Co 3 Fe 1 /NC-700-10 as the air–cathode catalyst display high power density, specific capacity and excellent stability. This work provides an effective idea for the development of high performance bifunctional electrocatalyst and the application of RZABs.

Abstract:Flexible zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are expected to become a promising candidate in energy storage equipment for wearable electronic devices. However, the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have impeded the development of ZABs. Herein, an FeCo- and N-codoped bifunctional electrocatalyst (FeCoNCF) is fabricated by simple one-pot and pyrolysis strategies. Concretely, the bacterial cellulose (BC) and Prussian blue analogue (PBA) derived transition metal and nitrogen doped carbon (M–N–C) composites provide ORR and OER active sites. FeCoNCF exhibits outstanding ORR and OER activities. It displays a favorable high half-wave potential (0.81 V) and a low overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 (341 mV), which are on a par with commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 , and shows outstanding stability. The sandwich-type flexible zinc–air battery containing FeCoNCF shows a favorable power density (49.29 mW cm −2 ) and superior cycling stability.

Efficient Ag/Ag2O-Doped Cobalt Metallo-Covalent Organic Framework Electrocatalysts for Rechargeable Zinc-Air Battery

Abstract:We report a simple encapsulation approach for coordinating cobalt ions with a bipyridine group and doping with Ag/Ag2O nanoparticles (NPs) on a novel metallo-covalent organic framework (MCOF) synthesized using 4,4',4 ''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) tribenzoic acid and 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-diamine as building blocks and cobalt acetate as precursor (denoted as Ag/Ag2O@MCOF(Co)). The prepared Ag/Ag2O@MCOF(Co) is composed of irregular nanosheets, which are embedded with large amounts of Ag2O/AgNPs. Compared with MCOF(Co) and Ag/Ag2O@MCOF, the obtained Ag/Ag2O@MCOF(Co) catalyst displays superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance due to the synergistic effect among Co-O, Co-N, Ag2O, Ag, and the graphene-like nanostructure. The Ag/Ag2O@MCOF(Co) catalyst demonstrates an impressive half-wave potential of 0.76 V [vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)] and an average kinetic current density of -4.8 mA cm(-2) in an alkaline solution toward ORR. As expected, the primary zinc-air battery is developed using Ag/Ag2O@MCOF(Co) as an air electrode achieved maximum peak power density (170.8 mW cm(-2)), a specific discharge capacity of 829 mAh g(-1), and stable long-term operation for 100 cycles. This work presents feasible and ingenious strategies for providing porous organic frameworks with potential applications to energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:An efficient, robust and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential to high-performance zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) systems have attracted considerable attention recently. Herein, a novel Co-Nx-enriched electrospun porous carbon nanofibrous bifunctional electrocatalyst (Co-Nx/EPCF) is prepared by electrospinning with cobalt nitrate and SiO2, followed by carbonization and acid etching. The catalyst displays an outstanding electrocatalytic activity of reversible oxygen overpotential (ΔE = Ej = 10 - E1/2 = 0.87 V), as well as a high stability. The first-principal calculation reveals that the Co–N–C structure has better ORR paths than that of Co cluster. Furthermore, based on the electrocatalyst, the assembled flexible ZABs possess a power density of 81 mW cm−2, a capacity of 807 mAh gzn−1, and 111 stability cycles. The study provides a novel strategy to prepare high-performance bifunctional catalysts for wearable power sources.

Abstract:To commercialize the rechargeable zinc-air (Zn-air) battery, it is desirable but challenging to design highly active, low-cost, stable, and earth-rich bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to replace rare, expensive, and unstable noble-metal electrocatalysts. Herein, two MOFs are combined under electrostatic interaction and pressure by the way of Ball milling. Then, after post-processing including calcination, acid pickling, and N doping, the bimetal (Fe and Co) and N triple-doped porous carbon electrocatalyst (MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 ) is prepared. Noteworthily, the MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 has bimetallic active sites, high contents of pyridine N and graphite N, large surface area, mesoporous structure, and conductive carbon skeletons, which decide the excellent ORR performance. For ORR, the half-wave potential ( E 1/2 = 0.902 V vs. RHE) of MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 is 27 mV higher than that of 20 wt% Pt/C ( E 1/2 = 0.875 vs. RHE). And the catalyst has also excellent methanol tolerance and stability. The Zn-air battery with MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 as cathode catalyst has higher peak power density (176.5 mW cm −2 ) than that with 20 wt% Pt/C (141.8 mW cm −2 ) and 20 wt% Pt/C + RuO 2 (94.4 mW cm −2 ) as cathode catalyst. Meanwhile, the Zn-air battery with MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 as cathode catalyst exhibits perfect charge-discharge stability (longer than 540 h).
