Abstract:Understanding the impact and restriction of climate change on potential distribution of bamboo forest is crucial for sustainable management of bamboo forest and bamboo-based economic development. In this study, climatic variables and maximum entropy model were used to simulate the potential distribution of bamboo forest in China under the future climate scenarios. Seven climatic variables, such as Spring precipitation, Summer precipitation, Autumn precipitation, average annual relative humidity, Autumn average temperature, average annual temperature range and annual total radiation, were selected as input variables of maximum entropy model based on the relative importance of those climate variables for predicting bamboo forest presence. The suitable ranges of the seven climatic variables for potential distribution of bamboo forest were 337–794 mm, 496–705 mm, 213–929 mm, 74.3%–83.4%, 16.6–23.8 °C, 2.3–10.1 °C and 3.2 × 104–4.3 × 104 W m−2, respectively. Under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate scenarios, the suitable area of bamboo forest growth first increased and then decreased, and showed range contractions towards the interior and expansions towards southwest in China. The results of the present study can serve as a useful reference to dynamic monitoring of the spatial distribution and sustainable utilization of bamboo forest in the future under climate change.
Predicting current and future distribution of wild edible Syzygium afromontanum (F. White) Byng. under climate change in Ethiopia

Abstract:Plant species tend to shift their geographical ranges in response to climate change. The extent to which they are sensitive to the change is less understood in the tropics. Here, we predicted the current and future distribution of Syzygium afromontanum, a highly prioritized plant that contributes nutritious and edible fruits but has a narrow ecological range in Ethiopia. The MaxEnt algorithm method was used to predict potential suitable habitats for the species in the long run. Twenty-two environmental variables were downloaded from the WorldClim database, and 47 spatially rarefied occurrence points were used. The current and two climate change scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) for 2050 and 2070 were used. Model evaluation by AUC value ranges from 0.914–0.931 under all scenarios, placing the models in the excellent category. The jackknife evaluation of the 25 random test percentage entry for model calibration showed that solar radiation, and precipitation in the coldest, and driest quarters are significant predictors of the distribution model. Compared to the current, the potential distribution area of the species would be reduced by 3.21% and 3.32% under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 of 2050 and by 2.77% and 2.86% under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 of 2070, respectively. The consequence of this situation will have a long-term effect on the conservation of the species and the indigenous knowledge associated with the species. Thus, modeling plays an essential role in designing and implementing conservation policies to conserve species that have narrow ecological ranges besides being highly prioritized and socio-economically valuable plants.

Potential distribution of selected invasive alien plants under current and future climate change scenarios in South Africa

Abstract:Invasive alien plants are one of the main causes for the decline of native biodiversity worldwide. Hence, it is crucial to understand the dynamics of invasive plants in the context of a changing climate. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the potential distribution of two major invasive alien plants, Prosopis spp and Acacia mearnsii, under current and future climate change scenarios across South Africa. The maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model was used with species occurrence data and bioclimatic variables. The Species occurrence data was obtained from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), while the bioclimatic variables were downloaded from the WorldClim database. The model evaluation metrics for training and test samples were the area under curve (AUC) of 0.76 and 0.77 for Prosopis spp, and 0.91 and 0.89 for A. mearnsii, respectively. It showed that MaxEnt performed well in mapping the distribution of both species. Model results indicated that the near-current potential distribution of Prosopis spp and A. mearnsii in South Africa is significant (93.8% and 9.7% of the total land area, respectively). With the projected climate, Prosopis spp showed an inconsistent result across the General Circulation Models (GCMs), projection times and climate change scenarios. However, with respect to the current potential distribution, the geographical ranges of A. mearnsii will significantly contract (by about 75%) due to climate change. Therefore, it is imperative that policy makers, environmental managers and other stakeholders implement integrated management and control strategies to restrict the distribution of Prosopis spp.
Prediction of Potential Suitable Distribution of Liriodendron chinense (Hemsl.) Sarg. in China Based on Future Climate Change Using the Optimized MaxEnt Model

Abstract:Liriodendron chinense (Hemsl.) Sarg. (Magnoliales: Magnoliaceae), valued for its medicinal properties and timber and as an ornamental plant, is now classified as an endangered species. Investigating how future climate-change scenarios might affect the potential geographic distribution of L. chinense will provide a crucial scientific basis for its protection and management strategies. The MaxEnt model was calibrated using the ENMeval optimization package, and then it was coupled with ArcGIS 10.8 to forecast the possible distribution areas of L. chinense in China, utilizing elevation data, bioclimatic factors, and human footprint as environmental variables. The results indicate: (1) The optimal model parameters were set as follows: FC = LQ, RM = 0.5, the MaxEnt model demonstrated high predictive accuracy and minimal overfitting; (2) The total suitable habitat area for the potential geographical distribution of L. chinense during the current period is estimated at 151.55 × 104 km2, predominantly located in central, eastern, and southwestern regions of China; (3) The minimum temperature of the coldest month (bio6), precipitation of the driest month (bio14), precipitation of the driest quarter (bio17), precipitation of the warmest quarter (bio18), elevation (alt), and human footprint (hf) are the main environmental variables determining the suitable habitat distribution of L. chinense; (4) During the period from 2041 to 2060, under the carbon emission scenarios of SSP126, SSP245, and SSP370, the suitable habitat for L. chinense shows varying degrees of increase compared to the current period. However, under the highest concentration scenario of SSP585, the suitable habitat area decreases to some extent; (5) The distribution of L. chinense is likely to move towards higher latitudes and elevations in the future due to changes in the climate. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential impacts of climate change on L. chinense, offering valuable information for its protection and management under future climatic conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Climate change will either improve, reduce, or shift its appropriate climatic habitat of a particular species, which could result in shifts from its geographical range. Predicting the potential distribution through MaxEnt modeling has been developed as an appropriate tool for assessing habitat distribution and resource conservation to protect bamboo species. Methods Our objective is to model the current and future distribution of Oxytenanthera abyssinica (A. Richard) based on three representative concentration pathways (RCP) (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) for 2050s and 2070s using a maximum entropy model (MaxEnt) in Northern Ethiopia. For modeling procedure, 77 occurrence records and 11 variables were retained to simulate the current and future distributions of Oxytenanthera abyssinica in Northern Ethiopia. To evaluate the performance of the model, the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) was used. Results All of the AUCs (area under curves) were greater than 0.900, thereby placing these models in the “excellent” category. The jackknife test also showed that precipitation of the coldest quarter (Bio19) and precipitation of the warmest quarter (Bio18) contributed 66.8% and 54.7% to the model. From the area of current distribution, 1367.51 km 2 (2.52%), 7226.28 km 2 (13.29%), and 5377.26 km 2 (9.89%) of the study area were recognized as high, good, and moderate potential habitats of Oxytenanthera abyssinica in Northern Ethiopia, and the high potential area was mainly concentrated in Tanqua Abergele (0.70%), Kola Temben (0.65%), Tselemti (0.60%), and Tsegede (0.31%). Kafta Humera was also the largest good potential area, which accounts for 2.75%. Compared to the current distribution, the total area of the high potential regions and good potential regions for Oxytenanthera abyssinica under the three RCPs (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) would increase in the 2050s and 2070s. However, the total area of the least potential regions under the three RCPs (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) in 2050s and 2070s would decrease. Conclusion This study can provide vital information for the protection, management, and sustainable use of Oxytenanthera abyssinica , the resource to address the global climate challenges.

Predicting the Potential Distribution of Haloxylon ammodendron under Climate Change Scenarios Using Machine Learning of a Maximum Entropy Model

Abstract:Haloxylon ammodendron (H. ammodendron) is a second-class protected plant of national significance in China that is known for its growth in desert and semidesert regions, where it serves as a desert ecosystem guardian by playing a substantial role in maintaining ecosystem structure and function. The changing global climate has substantially altered the growth conditions for H. ammodendron. This study focuses on identifying the key variables influencing the distribution of H. ammodendron and determining their potential impact on future distribution. We employed the Maxent model to evaluate the current climate suitability for H. ammodendron distribution and to project its future changes across various shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios. Our findings indicate that precipitation during the warmest quarter and precipitation during the wettest month are the most influential variables affecting the potentially suitable habitats of H. ammodendron. The highly suitable habitat area for H. ammodendron currently covers approximately 489,800 km2. The Maxent model forecasts an expansion of highly suitable H. ammodendron habitat under all future SSP scenarios, with the extent of unsuitable areas increasing with greater global warming. The increased highly suitable habitats range from 40% (SSP585) to 80% (SSP126) by the 2070s (2060–2080). Furthermore, our results indicate a continued expansion of desertification areas due to global warming, highlighting the significant role of H. ammodendron in maintaining desert ecosystem stability. This study offers valuable insights into biodiversity preservation and ecological protection in the context of future climate change scenarios.

Abstract:With the intensification of climate change, species migration or extinction events may occur on a wide scale. Leonurus japonicus Houtt. is an important medicinal species distributed globally. However, the potential effect of climate change on its distribution is not known. In this study, we developed a MaxEnt model for the global distribution of L. japonicus and identified locations of ecological suitability. From this we predicted future distribution changes under four different climate change scenarios. Furthermore, we assessed the medicinal value of L. japonicus in different locations according to the expression of chemical markers, then employed transcriptomics to explore genes associated with its ecological suitability and medicinal value. Our findings indicated that the primary environmental factors influencing its distribution include the precipitation of warmest quarter, the mean temperature of coldest quarter, and AWC range. L. japonicus is primarily distributed in Southeast Asia, Europe, South America, and the Gulf of Mexico. Future projections show an expanding distribution trend with migration towards higher latitudes. Highly and moderately suitable areas were more favorable for cultivating medicinal L. japonicus. We identified 103 transcription factors associated with its ecological suitability and 22 genes linked to its medicinal value. In summary, this study provides valuable guidance for the cultivation of L. japonicus under the changing climate. Additionally, it offers new insights into the accumulation patterns of medicinal components.

Abstract:It is important to understand how species distributions will shift under climate change. While much focus has been on species tracking temperature changes in the northern hemisphere, changing precipitation patterns in tropical regions have received less attention. The aim of the study was to estimate the current distribution of wet and dry miombo woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa and to predict their distributions under different climate change scenarios. A maximum entropy method (Maxent) was used to estimate the distributions and for projections. Occurrence records of dominant tree species in each woodland were used for modeling, together with altitude, soil characteristics, and climate variables as the environmental variables. Modeling was done under all four representative concentration pathways (RCPs) and three general circulation models. Three dominant tree species were used in models of dry miombo while seven were used for wet miombo. Models estimated dry miombo to cover almost the entire known distribution of miombo woodlands while wet miombo were estimated to predominate in parts of Angola, southern Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Future climate scenarios predict a drier climate in sub-Saharan Africa, and as a result, the range of dry miombo will expand. Dry miombo were predicted to expand by up to 17.3% in 2050 and 22.7% in 2070. In contrast, wet miombo were predicted to contract by up to − 28.6% in 2050 and − 41.6% in 2070. A warming climate is conducive for the proliferation of dry miombo tree species but unfavorable for wet miombo tree species.

Abstract:Madagascar, a globally renowned biodiversity hotspot characterized by high rates of endemism, is one of the few remaining refugia for many plants and animal species. However, global climate change has greatly affected the natural ecosystem and endemic species living in Madagascar, and will likely continue to influence species distribution in the future. Madagascar is home to six endemic baobab (Adansonia spp., Bombacoideae [Malvaceae]) species (A. grandidieri, A. suarezensis, A. madagascariensis, A. perrieri, A. rubrostipa, A. za), which are remarkable and endangered plants. This study aimed to model the current distribution of suitable habitat for each baobab species endemic to Madagascar and determine the effect that climate change will have on suitable baobab habitat by the years 2050 and 2070. The distribution was modeled using MaxEnt based on locality information of 245 occurrence sites of six species from both online database and our own field work. A total of seven climatic variables were used for the modeling process. The present distribution of all six Madagascar's baobabs was largely influenced by temperature-related factors. Although both expansion and contraction of suitable habitat are predicted for all species, loss of original suitable habitat is predicted to be extensive. For the most widespread Madagascar baobab, A. za, more than 40% of its original habitat is predicted to be lost because of climate change. Based on these findings, we recommend that areas predicted to contract in response to climate change should be designated key protection regions for baobab conservation.

Abstract:Tamarindus indica is a multipurpose dry land species in sub-Saharan that is traditionally used to build resilience into the farming system. The species is highly threatened and listed on the IUCN Red List. However, information on how climatic condition locally influences its ecological distribution is limited. This study investigates the current and future suitable habitat for the species in the Tigray region, in northern Ethiopia. A total of 220 species presence points and the number of T. indica within a 50 m × 50 m plot were collected. In addition, 19 bioclimatic variables, 3 topographic variables and soil data were used to model the impact of future climate conditions under two Representative Concentration Path Ways (RCP4.5 and RCP 8.5). MaxEnt-v-3.3.3 k, Diva-GIS-7.5, and GIS10.6 were used to model the current and future distribution. SPSSv-26 was also utilized to analyze the relationship between the species' abundance and environmental variables. Results showed that the environmental variables determining most for the distribution of T. indica were mean diurnal range (Bio2 (56.9%)); temperature seasonality (Bio4 (10.3%)) and temperature annual range (Bio7 (9.2%)). The model suggested that the current distribution of T. indica covers an area of 9209 km2 (14.04%). This would have increased to 29,363 km2 (44.78%) and 11,046 km2 (16.85%) by 2070 under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively. Compared to the high-impact areas, new gains of suitable areas (net 25,081 km2) for the future distribution of the species were predicted in 2070-RCP4.5. Altitude, rainfall, temperature, silt contents of soils and soil pH have significant contributions (P-value<0.05) to the abundance of T. indica. However, altitude has a negative relationship with the abundance of T. indica. Additional studies to understand population trends and other threats are recommended.

Abstract:Climate change has significantly influenced the growth and distribution of plant species, particularly those with a narrow ecological niche. Understanding climate change impacts on the distribution and spatial pattern of endangered species can improve conservation strategies. The MaxEnt model is widely applied to predict species distribution and environmental tolerance based on occurrence data. This study investigated the suitable habitats of the endangered Ormosia microphylla in China and evaluated the importance of bioclimatic factors in shaping its distribution. Occurrence data and environmental variables were gleaned to construct the MaxEnt model, and the resulting suitable habitat maps were evaluated for accuracy. The results showed that the MaxEnt model had an excellent simulation quality (AUC = 0.962). The major environmental factors predicting the current distribution of O. microphylla were the mean diurnal range (bio2) and precipitation of the driest month (bio14). The current core potential distribution areas were concentrated in Guangxi, Fujian, Guizhou, Guangdong, and Hunan provinces in south China, demonstrating significant differences in their distribution areas. Our findings contribute to developing effective conservation and management measures for O. microphylla , addressing the critical need for reliable prediction of unfavorable impacts on the potential suitable habitats of the endangered species.

Abstract:The MaxEnt model with optimized parameters was used to predict the suitable habitats of L. japonicus at different stages, and the Marxan model was used to determine the priority of protected areas. The extremes of heat and cold, the precipitation in the wettest month and the driest month, and altitude were the main environmental factors affecting the distribution of L. japonicus. The priority protected areas of L. japonicus should be set in the southwest of central China. Leonurus japonicus Houtt. is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant with high medicinal and edible value. Wild L. japonicus resources have reduced dramatically in recent years. This study predicted the response of distribution range of L. japonicus to climate change in China, which provided scientific basis for the conservation and utilization. In this study, 489 occurrence points of L. japonicus were selected based on GIS technology and spThin package. The default parameters of MaxEnt model were adjusted by using ENMeva1 package of R environment, and the optimized MaxEnt model was used to analyze the distribution of L. japonicus. When the feature combination in the model parameters is hing and the regularization multiplier is 1.5, the MaxEnt model has a higher degree of optimization. With the AUC of 0.830, our model showed a good predictive performance. The results showed that L. japonicus were widely distributed in the current period. The maximum temperature of warmest month, the min temperature of coldest month, the precipitation of wettest month, the precipitation of driest month, and altitude were the main environmental factors affecting the distribution of L. japonicus. Under the three climate change scenarios, the suitable distribution area of L. japonicus will range shift to high latitudes, indicating that the distribution of L. japonicus has a strong response to climate change. The regional change rate is the lowest under the SSP126‐2090s scenario and the highest under the SSP585‐2090s scenario.

Abstract:This article projected the distribution of Indianthus virgatus, a monotypic plant endemic to the Western Ghats–Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot. The article also highlights the role of environmental parameters in determining the current and future distribution projections using MaxEnt and Wallace EcoMod. Species distribution modeling (SDM) is an essential tool in ecology and conservation for predicting species distributions based on species presence/absence data and environmental variables. The present study aimed to understand the distribution pattern and habitat suitability of Indianthus virgatus under current and future climate change scenarios (2050 and 2070) using MaxEnt (3.4.4) and Wallace Ecological Modeling (v2.1.2) tools. The study also intended to identify key environmental predictors of I. virgatus' distribution. Species occurrence data were collected from various sources, including herbarium (online and physical), field surveys, and online databases, yielding 105 unique locations in the Western Ghats (WG) of India and Sri Lanka. We used 19 bioclimatic variables and elevation data sourced from WorldClim for modeling. The MaxEnt and Wallace models showed excellent performance in predicting the distribution of I. virgatus, with area under the curve values of 0.958 (± 0.002) and 0.93, respectively. In MaxEnt modeling, Temperature Seasonality (bio4) was the most significant environmental parameter, followed by the Precipitation of the Coldest Quarter (bio19). In contrast, the Annual Mean Temperature (bio1), Temperature Seasonality (bio4), and Annual Precipitation (bio12) were among the key contributors in Wallace EcoMod. Both the models predicted relatively lesser areas in the species' distribution range as highly suitable habitats (HSH) in India and Sri Lanka. We found divergent trends in predicting I. virgatus distributions using MaxEnt and Wallace EcoMod, particularly for future projections. Nevertheless, both models predicted significant habitat loss under future climate change scenarios, especially under RCP85, with varying degrees of suitability across India and Sri Lanka. Overall, our findings on expected habitat loss under future climate change scenarios highlight the importance of conserving I. virgatus, which has already been declared critically endangered (CR) in Sri Lanka.

Abstract:Climate change influences ecosystem by altering the habitat of species in it. We report the quantitative predictions of climate change on riparian species. Homonoia riparia (H. riparia) Lour, a species native to Yunnan Province, China, is a medicinal plant with high ecological and economic value. Its population has declined significantly, and the species has become locally endangered in recent decades. Understanding the habitat requirements of this species, evaluating habitat quality, and predicting its potential habitat are significant for protecting H. riparia Lour. One positional variable, three topographic variables and eight bioclimatic variables were used to model its distribution and potential habitat. The eight main bioclimatic variables influencing species distribution were selected from 19 bioclimatic variables based on correlation analysis and principal component analysis. An MAXENT model, because of the advantages of using presence-only data and performing well with incomplete data, small sample sizes and gaps, was employed to simulate the habitat suitability distribution. The results show that seven variables, namely, annual mean temperature, altitude, precipitation seasonality, precipitation of coldest quarter, the distance to the nearest river, temperature seasonality, and precipitation during the driest month, are significant factors determining H. riparia Lour’s suitable habitat. Habitat suitability for three historical periods and two future climate warming scenarios were calculated. The habitat suitability of H. riparia Lour in Yunnan Province is predicted to improve with global warming.

Abstract:Abstract A detailed understanding of species’ responses to global climate change provides an informative baseline for designing conservation strategies to optimize protection of biodiversity. However, such information is either limited or not available for many tropical species, making it difficult to incorporate climate change into conservation planning for most tropical species. Here, we used correlative ecological niche models to assess potential distributional responses of 3 range-restricted West African birds, Timneh Parrot (Pscittacus erithracus timneh), Ballman’s Malimbe (Malimbus ballmanni), and White-necked Rockfowl (Picathartes gymnocephalus), to global climate change. We used primary biodiversity occurrence records for each species obtained from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, eBird, and VertNet; for environmental data, we used climatic variables for the present and future, the latter characterized by 2 IPCC representative concentration pathways (4.5, 8.5) future emissions scenarios and 27 general circulation models for a 2050 time horizon. We found broad present-day potential distributions with respect to climate for all 3 species. Future potential distributions for Ballman’s Malimbe and White-necked Rockfowl tended to be stable and closely similar to their present-day distributions; by contrast, we found marked climate change–driven potential range loss across the range of Timneh Parrot. Our results suggest that impacts of climate change on the present distributions of West African birds will in some cases be minimal, but that individual species may respond differently to future conditions. Thus, to optimize conservation of these species, and of bird diversity in general, we recommend that regional-to-national species conservation action plans incorporate climate change adaptation strategies for individual species; ecological niche models could provide an informative baseline information for this planning and prioritization.
Potential Global Distribution of Paracoccus marginatus, under Climate Change Conditions, Using MaxEnt

Abstract:The papaya mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus, is an invasive pest species found all over the world. It is native to Mexico and Central America, but is now present in more than 50 countries and regions, seriously threatening the economic viability of the agricultural and forestry industry. In the current study, the global potential distribution of P. marginatus was predicted under current and future climatic conditions using MaxEnt. The results of the model assessment indicated that the area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic ( ROC-AUC) was 0.949, while the TSS value was 0.820. The results also showed that the three variables with the greatest impact on the model were min temperature of coldest month (bio6), precipitation of wettest month (bio13), and precipitation of coldest quarter (bio19), with corresponding contributions of 46.8%, 31.1%, and 13.1%, respectively. The results indicated that the highly suitable areas were mainly located in tropical and subtropical regions, including South America, southern North America, Central America, Central Africa, Australia, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia. Under four climate scenarios in the 2050s and 2070s, the area of suitability will change very little. Moreover, the results showed that the area of suitable areas in 2070s increased under all four climate scenarios compared to the current climate. In contrast, the area of suitable habitat increases from the current to the 2050s under the SSP370 and SSP585 climate scenarios. The current study could provide a reference framework for the future control and management of papaya mealybug and other invasive species.

Predicting Potential Suitable Areas of Dendrocalamus Brandisii under Global Climate Change

Abstract:Climate change restricts and alters the distribution range of plant species. Predicting potential distribution and population dynamics is crucial to understanding species’ geographical distribution characteristics to harness their economic and ecological benefits. This study uses Dendrocalamus brandisii as the research subject, aiming to accurately reveal the impact of climate change on this plant. The findings offer important insights for developing practical conservation and utilization strategies, and guidance for future introduction and cultivation. The MaxEnt model was optimized using regularization multiplier (RM) and feature combination (FC) from the ‘Kuenm’ package in R language, coupled with ArcGIS for modeling 142 distribution points and 29 environmental factors of D. brandisii. This article explored the key environmental factors influencing the potential suitable regions for D. brandisii, and predicted trends in habitat changes under SSPs2.6 and SSPs8.5 climate scenarios for the current era, the 2050s, 2070s, and 2090s. (1) The results show that when FC = QPH and RM = 1, the AUC = 0.989, indicating that the model prediction is accurate with the lowest complexity and overfitting. The key environmental factors affecting its primary suitable distribution, determined by jackknife training gain and single-factor response curve, are the precipitation of warmest quarter (bio18), the temperature seasonality (bio4), the minimum average monthly radiation (uvb-4), and elevation (Elev), contributing 93.6% collectively. It was established that the optimal range for D. brandisii is precipitation of warmest quarter of between 657 and 999 mm, temperature seasonality from 351% to 442%, minimum average monthly radiation from 2420 to 2786 J/m2/day, at elevation from 1099 to 2217 m. (2) The current potential habitat distribution is somewhat fragmented, covering an area of 92.17 × 104 km2, mainly located in southwest, south, and southeast China, central Nepal, southern Bhutan, eastern India, northwestern Myanmar, northern Laos, and northern Vietnam. (3) In future periods, under different climate scenario models, the potential habitat of D. brandisii will change in varying degrees to become more fragmented, with its distribution center generally shifting westward. The SSP8.5 scenario is not as favorable for the growth of D. brandisii as the SSPs2.6. Central Nepal, southern Bhutan, and the southeastern coastal areas of China have the potential to become another significant cultivation region for D. brandisii. The results provide a scientific basis for the planning of priority planting locations for potential introduction of D. brandisii in consideration of its cultivation ranges.
Prediction of the potentially suitable areas of Litsea cubeba in China based on future climate change using the optimized MaxEnt model

Abstract:Litsea cubeba is an important woody oil plant. The essential oils (EOs) can be extracted from its flowers, leaves and peels and, by volume, it is the most exported natural EOs from China. Thus, L. cubeba has important economic and medicinal value. Although there is demand for the rapid expansion of L. cubeba production, there has been a sharp reduction in natural resources. Therefore, determining the potentially suitable area for L. cubeba and expanding its cultivation will help meet the growing demand for volatile oil. Based on 453 distribution records of L. cubeba in China and 16 major environmental factors, we simulated the distribution pattern of the potentially suitable area of L. cubeba under three different climate change scenarios (SSP126, SSP370 and SSP585) in three time periods: the current period, 2050 s, and 2070 s. The analysis was implemented using the MaxEnt model, optimized using the ENMeval package. The jackknife test, percent contribution and response curve were used to determine the most important environmental factors and response intervals affecting the distribution of L. cubeba . We found that the parameter settings of the optimal model were RM = 2.5 and FC = LQH. The results of the MaxEnt model exhibited a high prediction accuracy and a low degree of overfitting. Precipitation of the driest quarter, annual precipitation, temperature annual range and minimum temperature of the coldest month were the dominant factors affecting the distribution of L. cubeba , and their thresholds were ≥ 36.21 mm, ≥905.95 mm, ≤32.44 °C and ≥ -3.73 °C, respectively. The results showed that the total potentially suitable area of L. cubeba in China was 208.19 × 10 4 km 2 under current climate conditions. The predicted potentially suitable area was mainly concentrated in the 19 provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Basin and its southern area. Under future climate change conditions, the predicted potentially suitable area of L. cubeba increased with time, and the centroid of the predicted potentially suitable area of each grade moved northward. The results of this study can be used to guide the selection of future introductions, as well as the development, artificial cultivation and resource conservation of L. cubeba .

Abstract:This study employs spatial geography and species distribution modeling to investigate potential trends in Aromia bungii under future climate conditions. The findings contribute to a deeper comprehension of the distribution of A. bungii and furnish invaluable insights for the maintenance of forest health and the security of ecosystems. Furthermore, the findings have significant implications for researchers, policymakers, and governments. Aromia bungii is a pest that interferes with the health of forests and hinders the development of the fruit tree industry, and its spread is influenced by changes in abiotic factors and human activities. Therefore, exploring their spatial distribution patterns and potential distribution areas under such conditions is crucial for maintaining forest ecosystem security. This study analyzed the spatial differentiation characteristics of the geographic distribution pattern of A. bungii in China using Moran's I and the Getis‐Ord General G index. Hot spot distribution areas were identified using Getis‐Ord Gi*. An optimized MaxEnt model was used to predict the potential distribution areas of A. bungii within China under four shared economic pathways by combining multivariate environmental data: (1) prediction of natural environmental variables predicted under current climate models; (2) prediction of natural environmental variables + human activities under current climate models; and (3) prediction of natural environmental variables under the future climate models (2050s and 2070s). Meanwhile, MigClim was used to simulate the unoccupied suitable area in the presence of obstacles under future climate change. The results showed that human activities, minimum temperature of the coldest month, and precipitation of the wettest month had positive effects on the distribution of A. bungii. However, in the current period, human activities drastically reduced the survival area of A. bungii, and its suitable distribution area was mainly concentrated in the eastern and central regions of China. Under the influence of climate change in the future, the habitat of A. bungii will gradually increase. Additionally, the MigClim model indicates that the area unoccupied by A. bungii has been on a continuous increasing trend. This study provides a positive reference for the prevention and control of A. bungii and the maintenance of forest health and ecosystem security, and provides important theoretical guidance for researchers, policymakers, and governments.

Abstract:Hylomecon japonica is considered a natural medicinal plant with anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antibacterial activity. The assessment of climate change impact on its habitat suitability is important for the wild cultivation and standardized planting of H. japonica. In this study, the maximum entropy model (Maxent) and geographic information system (ArcGIS) were applied to predict the current and future distribution of H. japonica species, and the contributions of variables were evaluated by using the jackknife test. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) value confirmed the accuracy of the model prediction based on 102 occurrence records. The predicted potential distributions of H. japonica were mainly concentrated in Jilin, Liaoning, Shaanxi, Chongqing, Henan, Heilongjiang and other provinces (adaptability index > 0.6). The jackknife experiment showed that the precipitation of driest month (40.5%), mean annual temperature (12.4%), the precipitation of wettest quarter (11.6%) and the subclass of soil (9.7%) were the most important factors affecting the potential distribution of H. japonica. In the future, only under the shared socioeconomic Pathway 245 (SSP 245) scenario model in 2061–2080, the suitable habitat area for H. japonica is expected to show a significant upward trend. The area under other scenarios may not increase or decrease significantly.
