Abstract:Rice plant disease detection and classification include employing methods such as Computer Vision (CV) and Machine Learning (ML) for classifying and recognizing diseases affecting rice crops. These techniques could help agricultural experts and farmers in rapidly managing and diagnosing diseases, eventually resulting in food security and best crop yield. Rice plant disease classification and recognition utilizing Deep Learning (DL) has emerged as an effective strategy to address the problems related to automatic disease detection from the rice plants. DL technique, a subregion of Artificial Intelligence (AI), focuses on training neural networks with different layers to automatically learn intricate representations and patterns from information. This study leverages the Deep Learning-based Automated Rice Plant Disease Recognition and Classification (DL-ARPDRC) approach. The DL-ARPDRC technique encompasses different processes to improve accuracy and diagnosis performance. The primary level encompasses pre-processing stage which includes image resizing and Gaussian Filter (GF) to improve image quality. Next, Otsu’s threshold-based segmentation can be used for the segmentation of the lesion from the background, isolating the region of interest. Feature extraction is accomplished through the utilization of the VGG-19 architecture. Finally, the extracted features are fed into an XGBoost classification model for distinguishing between different types of diseases. A detailed experimental result analysis portrayed that the DL-ARPDRC technique reaches better performance compared to other recent approaches.

Abstract:A fascinating area of agricultural research is the application of machine learning (ML) principles from computer science to the identification of diseases in images of rice plants. The spread of pests and diseases that affect rice has accelerated in recent years. It is essential to recognize symptoms and when and how to effectively control diseases. The primary factor that contributes to yield loss in the agricultural sector is a widespread disease. More often than not, infection acknowledgment and finding happen when the disease has progressed to a super level, achieving a lack of yield, time, and money. A Picture Handling and worked on Deep Learning (DL) model is utilized to identify sicknesses in rice plants is essential until further notice. As a result, the goal of this research is to find out how well the new DL architectures classify the dataset on rice plant disease. In light of notable datasets, tests show that the proposed strategy takes a higher order rate than additional current techniques.

Abstract:There is an incredible progress in machine learning applications in the field of agricultural research. Detection of various diseases, deficiencies, and factors impacting crops’ productivity is one of the major ongoing research in this field. This paper considers various machine learning and deep learning techniques (transfer learning) for rice disease detection. In this study three different rice diseases viz. bacterial blight, rice blast, and brown spot are considered. A detailed comparative analysis of the results indicates the superiority of transfer learning techniques over conventional machine learning techniques. It is observed that InceptionResNetV2 achieves the best result followed by XceptionNet. This work can be incorporated in assisting the farmers for early diagnosis of rice disease so that future course of action may be taken on time. For future studies, efforts should be directed to work with bigger datasets so as to generalize the findings of the experiment.

Abstract:Digital image processing has witnessed a significant transformation, owing to the adoption of deep learning (DL) algorithms, which have proven to be vastly superior to conventional methods for crop detection. These DL algorithms have recently found successful applications across various domains, translating input data, such as images of afflicted plants, into valuable insights, like the identification of specific crop diseases. This innovation has spurred the development of cutting-edge techniques for early detection and diagnosis of crop diseases, leveraging tools such as convolutional neural networks (CNN), K-nearest neighbour (KNN), support vector machines (SVM), and artificial neural networks (ANN). This paper offers an all-encompassing exploration of the contemporary literature on methods for diagnosing, categorizing, and gauging the severity of crop diseases. The review examines the performance analysis of the latest machine learning (ML) and DL techniques outlined in these studies. It also scrutinizes the methodologies and datasets and outlines the prevalent recommendations and identified gaps within different research investigations. As a conclusion, the review offers insights into potential solutions and outlines the direction for future research in this field. The review underscores that while most studies have concentrated on traditional ML algorithms and CNN, there has been a noticeable dearth of focus on emerging DL algorithms like capsule neural networks and vision transformers. Furthermore, it sheds light on the fact that several datasets employed for training and evaluating DL models have been tailored to suit specific crop types, emphasizing the pressing need for a comprehensive and expansive image dataset encompassing a wider array of crop varieties. Moreover, the survey draws attention to the prevailing trend where the majority of research endeavours have concentrated on individual plant diseases, ML, or DL algorithms. In light of this, it advocates for the development of a unified framework that harnesses an ensemble of ML and DL algorithms to address the complexities of multiple plant diseases effectively.

Abstract:Rice continues to be a primary food for the world’s population. Over its complex history, dating as far back as 8,000 B.C., there have been agricultural challenges, such as a variety of diseases. A consequence of disease in rice plants may lead to no harvest of grain; therefore, detecting disease early and providing expert remedies in a low-cost solution is highly desirable. In this article, we study a pragmatic approach for rice growers to leverage artificial intelligence solutions that reduce cost, increase speed, improve ease of use, and increase model performance over other solutions, thereby directly impacting field operations. Our method significantly improves upon prior methods by combining automated feature extraction for image data, exploring thousands of traditional machine learning configurations, defining a search space for hyper-parameters, deploying a model using edge computing field usability, and suggesting remedies for rice growers. These results prove the validity of the proposed approach for rice disease detection and treatments.

Abstract:Hitherto, Rice (Oryza Sativa) has been one of the most demanding food crops in the world, cultivated in larger quantities, but loss in both quality and quantity of yield due to abiotic and biotic stresses has become a major concern. During cultivation, the crops are most prone to biotic stresses such as bacterial, viral, fungal diseases and pests. These stresses can drastically damage the crop. Lately and erroneously recognized crop diseases can increase fertilizers costs and major yield loss which results in high financial loss and adverse impact on nation’s economy. The proven methods of molecular biology can provide accurate detection of pathogenic factors, but these methods are not accessible to the majority of the farmers, needs high costs or resources, and require domain knowledge to implement. Expert’s field inspection report provides precise crop diagnosis but continuous field inspection over the remotely placed agriculture fields is not feasible. Therefore, cost effective approach for early detection of diseases can help farmers to take necessary steps in time to boost up the crop production. Precision agriculture makes use of decision support systems built using Machine Learning (ML) or Deep Learning (DL) approaches to cut down heavy costs. Timely crop diagnosis process can be automated with the involvement of Computer Vision, Image Processing and Deep Learning (DL) based methods for more precise prediction in less cost and time. Latest research shows that more accurate image classification can be implemented using Deep Learning based Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model. In this paper, we have proposed an automated Rice Disease Diagnosis System (RDDS) for timely, more accurate and detailed crop disease diagnosis, which consisting of two modules, they are Leaf Disease Identification (LDI) module for disease detection and Infection Intensity Estimation (IIE) module for disease severity analysis. The LDI module is based on the proposed novel RDD_CNN model that classified the eight most harmful and commonly occurring diseases, it has obtained the best test accuracy of 98.47% when compared to its first three versions. And the IIE module is designed for estimating identified disease’s intensity in terms of extent and stage of infection providing detailed and overall diagnosis report specially designed for Brown Spot disease.

Abstract:Automatic detection and analysis of rice crop diseases is widely required in the farming industry, which can be utilized to avoid squandering financial and other resources, reduce yield losses, and improve treatment efficiency, resulting in healthier crop output. An automated approach was proposed for accurately detecting and classifying diseases from a supplied photograph. The proposed system for the recognition of rice plant diseases adopts a computer vision–based approach that employs the techniques of image processing, machine learning, and deep learning, reducing the reliance on conventional methods to protect paddy crops from diseases like bacterial leaf blight, false smut, brown leaf spot, rice blast, and sheath rot, the five primary diseases that frequently plague the Indian rice fields. Following image pre-processing, image segmentation is employed to determine the diseased section of the paddy plant, with the diseases listed above being identified purely on the basis of their visual contents. An integration of a support vector machine classifier and convolutional neural networks are used to recognize and classify specific varieties of paddy plant diseases. With ReLU and softmax functions, the suggested deep learning–based strategy attained the highest validation accuracy of 0.9145. Following recognition, a predictive remedy is recommended, which can assist agriculture-related individuals and organizations in taking suitable measures to combat these diseases.

Abstract:Rice is an important food crop in China, and diseases and pests are the main factors threatening its safety, ecology, and efficient production. The development of remote sensing technology provides an important means for non-destructive and rapid monitoring of diseases and pests that threaten rice crops. This paper aims to provide insights into current and future trends in remote sensing for rice crop monitoring. First, we expound the mechanism of remote sensing monitoring of rice diseases and pests and introduce the applications of different commonly data sources (hyperspectral data, multispectral data, thermal infrared data, fluorescence, and multi-source data fusion) in remote sensing monitoring of rice diseases and pests. Secondly, we summarize current methods for monitoring rice diseases and pests, including statistical discriminant type, machine learning, and deep learning algorithm. Finally, we provide a general framework to facilitate the monitoring of rice diseases or pests, which provides ideas and technical guidance for remote sensing monitoring of unknown diseases and pests, and we point out the challenges and future development directions of rice disease and pest remote sensing monitoring. This work provides new ideas and references for the subsequent monitoring of rice diseases and pests using remote sensing.

Abstract:Plant leaf disease detection is critical for long-term agricultural viability. Numerous Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies have been implemented for detecting rice diseases. However, such methods failed to identify or have slow recognition causing severe output loss. Therefore, an advanced and precise detection method has become necessary to overcome this issue. This study analyzes plant diseases that affect rice, comprising three different forms of diseases. Bacterial leaf blight, Brown spot, and Leaf smut are three of the six diseases that can affect rice plants. In the proposed approach a VGG-16 transfer learning with Faster R-CNN deep architecture is used to extract features. After completing the transfer learning step, the gathered characteristics are categorized using the random forest method. The random forest classifier divided the radish field into three distinct regions. The images of rice plant leaves are taken from UCI Machine Learning Repository. The proposed approach obtains an average predicting accuracy of 97.3% for rice disease imagery class prediction. The extensive experiment outcomes demonstrate the suggested technique's validity, so it effectively detects rice diseases.

Abstract:Neutrophils from a boy suffering from recurrent infections were found to be totally deficient in specific granules when studied by electron microscopy. In contrast, myeloperoxidase-containing azurophil granules were increased in number. This deficiency of specific granules could be detected at the light-microscopic level using an immunocytochemical technique to demonstrate the absence of lactoferrin. Neutrophils also exhibited abnormal nuclear segmentation, nuclear clefts, an abnormally weak cytochemical reaction for alkaline phosphatase, and an increased number of mitochondria and ribosomes. Some granulocytic precursors were abnormal, and many of these cells were phagocytosed by macrophages in the bone marrow. Despite these multiple abnormalities and the history of severe pyogenic infection, the in vitro bactericidal capacity of the neutrophils was within normal limits, and normal degranulation of azurophil granules occurred following phagocytosis. The precise mechanism by which the deficiency of specific granules in this patient led to an enhanced in vivo susceptibility to infection therefore remains obscure. However, attention is drawn to the fact that in three previously described cases of specific granule deficiency a history of recurrent infections was present.

Abstract:Crop pests and diseases are treated as one of the main factors affecting food production and security. An accurate detection and corresponding precision management to reduce the spread of crop diseases in time and space is an important scientific issue in crop disease control tasks. On the one hand, the development of remote sensing technology provides higher-quality data (high spectral/spatial resolution) for crop disease monitoring. On the other hand, deep learning/machine learning algorithms also provide novel insights for crop disease detection. In this paper, a comprehensive review was conducted to demonstrate various remote sensing platforms (e.g. ground-based, low-attitude and spaceborne scales) and popular sensors (e.g. RGB, multispectral and hyperspectral sensors). In addition, conventional machine learning and deep learning algorithms applied for crop disease monitoring are also reviewed. In the end, considering the crop disease early detection problem which is a challenging problem in this area, self-supervised learning is introduced to motivate future research. It is envisaged that this paper has concluded the recent crop disease monitoring algorithms and provides a novel thought on crop disease early monitoring.

Abstract:Controlling crop diseases and pests is essential for intelligent agriculture (IA) due to the significant reduction in crop yield and quality caused by these problems. In recent years, the remote sensing (RS) areas has been prevailed over by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based applications. Herein, by using methods such as keyword co-contribution analysis and author co-occurrence analysis in bibliometrics, we found out the hot-spots of this field. UAV platforms equipped with various types of cameras and other advanced sensors, combined with artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, especially for deep learning (DL) were reviewed. Acknowledging the critical role of comprehending crop diseases and pests, along with their defining traits, we provided a concise overview as indispensable foundational knowledge. Additionally, some widely used traditional machine learning (ML) algorithms were presented and the performance results were tabulated to form a comparison. Furthermore, we summarized crop diseases and pests monitoring techniques using DL and introduced the application for prediction and classification. Take it a step further, the newest and the most concerned applications of large language model (LLM) and large vision model (LVM) in agriculture were also mentioned herein. At the end of this review, we comprehensively discussed some deficiencies in the existing research and some challenges to be solved, as well as some practical solutions and suggestions in the near future.

Abstract:Plants play a crucial role in supplying food globally. Various environmental factors lead to plant diseases which results in significant production losses. However, manual detection of plant diseases is a time-consuming and error-prone process. It can be an unreliable method of identifying and preventing the spread of plant diseases. Adopting advanced technologies such as Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) can help to overcome these challenges by enabling early identification of plant diseases. In this paper, the recent advancements in the use of ML and DL techniques for the identification of plant diseases are explored. The research focuses on publications between 2015 and 2022, and the experiments discussed in this study demonstrate the effectiveness of using these techniques in improving the accuracy and efficiency of plant disease detection. This study also addresses the challenges and limitations associated with using ML and DL for plant disease identification, such as issues with data availability, imaging quality, and the differentiation between healthy and diseased plants. The research provides valuable insights for plant disease detection researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals by offering solutions to these challenges and limitations, providing a comprehensive understanding of the current state of research in this field, highlighting the benefits and limitations of these methods, and proposing potential solutions to overcome the challenges of their implementation.

Abstract:Agro-business is highly dependent on rice quality and its protection from diseases. There are several prerequisites for the procedures and the strategies that are productive and efficient for expanding the harvest yield. The advancement in computer science has supported various domains; agricultural innovation is one of them. The apparatuses which utilize the strategies of advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning have been featured in this paper. These techniques attain abnormally productive outcomes for the recognition of infections engrossing the images of leaves, fields of harvest, or seeds. In this context, this work presents a survey that focuses on accuracy agribusiness for expanding the conception of rice, which is one of the main harvests on the planet. In this paper, the overview and examination of various papers distributed in the most recent eight years with various methodologies identified with crop diseases identification, the health of seedlings, and quality of grain have been introduced. Experiments are performed for knowledge extraction using Web of Science and Scopus databases to analyze research trends in the domain of rice disease identification using artificial intelligence using global analysis, year-wise and country-wise citations, and so on to support various researchers working in this domain.

Abstract:Plants can be affected by various diseases. As such, the early detection of crop diseases plays an essential role in the farming industry. However, such detection requires extensive pathogen knowledge and is costly and labor-intensive. These challenges present an attractive opportunity to leverage machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques to automate the detection of crop diseases. From this perspective, we present a review paper that showcases image-based plant disease detection and classification systems and discusses success stories using ML and DL techniques. In this review paper, we examine various aspects of these systems, including the sources of plant datasets, algorithm types and techniques used in ML and DL. The findings of this review paper inspire future research by highlighting the potential challenges in applying ML and DL to plant disease and pest detection. Additionally, it proposes potential solutions to overcome these challenges, paving the way for further advancements in developing and implementing automated systems for plant disease detection and classification. This work serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in the field, guiding their efforts toward more effective and accessible solutions for crop disease management.

Abstract:The most important cereal crop in the world is rice (Oryza sativa). Over half of the world's population uses it as a staple food and energy source. Abiotic and biotic factors such as precipitation, soil fertility, temperature, pests, bacteria, and viruses, among others, impact the yield production and quality of rice grain. Farmers spend a lot of time and money managing diseases, and they do so using a bankrupt "eye" method that leads to unsanitary farming practices. The development of agricultural technology is greatly conducive to the automatic detection of pathogenic organisms in the leaves of rice plants. Several deep learning algorithms are discussed, and processors for computer vision problems such as image classification, object segmentation, and image analysis are discussed. The paper showed many methods for detecting, characterizing, estimating, and using diseases in a range of crops. The methods of increasing the number of images in the data set were shown. Two methods were presented, the first is traditional reinforcement methods, and the second is generative adversarial networks. And many of the advantages have been demonstrated in the research paper for the work that has been done in the field of deep learning.

Abstract:Rice is considered one the most important plants globally because it is a source of food for over half the world's population. Like other plants, rice is susceptible to diseases that may affect the quantity and quality of produce. It sometimes results in anywhere between 20–40% crop loss production. Early detection of these diseases can positively affect the harvest, and thus farmers would have to be knowledgeable about the various disease and how to identify them visually. Even then, it is an impossible task for farmers to survey the vast farmlands on a daily basis. Even if this is possible, it becomes a costly task that will, in turn, increases the price of rice for consumers. Machine learning algorithms fitted to drone technology combined with the Internet of Things (IoT) can offer a solution to this problem. In this paper, we propose a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) transfer learning-based approach for the accurate detection and classification of rice leaf disease. The modified proposed approach includes a modified VGG19-based transfer learning method. The proposed modified system can accurately detect and diagnose six distinct classes: healthy, narrow brown spot, leaf scald, leaf blast, brown spot, and bacterial leaf blight. The highest average accuracy is 96.08% using the non-normalized augmented dataset. The corresponding precision, recall, specificity, and F1-score were 0.9620, 0.9617, 0.9921, and 0.9616, respectively. The proposed modified approach achieved significantly better results compared with similar approaches using the same dataset or similar-size datasets reported in the extant literature.

Abstract:Iraq's primary crop, crucial for both domestic consumption and exports, is rice. The prevalence of rice infections poses a significant challenge to farmers, impacting crop yield and resulting in substantial losses. Human identification of diseases relies on expertise, making early diagnosis crucial for sustaining rice plant health. To address the limited number of rice leaf images in the database, our approach incorporates augmentation and dilation rate. Integrating drone technology and machine learning algorithms offers a promising solution to efficiently diagnose rice leaf diseases. However, existing methods face challenges such as picture backgrounds, insufficient field image data, and symptom variations. Abstract:The rice disease is one of the most serious injurious factors that cause major loss of rice production and subsequent economy in agricultural industry. This study explored a new method for obtaining information of the rice disease in a short term through model regression methods. The spectrum characteristics of rice leaves under different disease damage were firstly analyzed for its relationship with rice disease level. The sensitive bands of the spectrum for accurately supervising rice diseases were selected with principal component analysis (PCA). The stepwise regression method and BP neural network were both used to establish the spectrum-based models for recognizing rice diseases. Results showed that five major characteristic bands were determined by PCA (990, 1850, 660, 1921, and 1933 nm) for monitoring foliar rice diseases, among which the edge area for red light had the best correlation with rice disease level was also selected as the parameter to establish the model. Specifically, the composite reflectivity of wavelengths between 990 and 1933 nm was negatively related to rice brown spot diseases stress, which was then used to establish the model. Parameters of the red edge area and the ranged reflectivity between 660 and 990 nm were used to establish models for monitoring rice sheath blight diseases. Totally, there were 60 samples employed to build models for identifying the two diseases by the stepwise regression method and the BP neural network method, and the rest 41 ones were used for further model verification. Compared with the stepwise regression analysis, BP neural network was evaluated to perform better with characteristic bands at 660, 990, and 1933 nm. In conclusion, the establishment of the function model in our study can be implemented to monitor rice diseases, which provided a theoretical basis for indirect and rapid monitoring rice diseases.

Abstract:Rice is the second most important cereal crop worldwide, and the first in terms of number of people who depend on it as a major staple food. Rice blast disease is the most important biotic constraint of rice cultivation causing each year millions of dollars of losses. Despite the efforts for breeding new resistant varieties, agricultural practices and chemical control are still the most important methods for disease management. Thus, rice blast forecasting is a primary tool to support rice growers in controlling the disease. In this study, we compared four models for predicting rice blast disease, two operational process-based models (Yoshino and WARM) and two approaches based on machine learning algorithms (M5Rules and RNN), the former inducing a rule-based model and the latter building a neural network. In situ telemetry is important to obtain quality in-field data for predictive models and this was a key aspect of the RICE-GUARD project on which this study is based. According to the authors, this is the first time process-based and machine learning modelling approaches for supporting plant disease management are compared.
