Abstract:The frequent occurrence of algal blooms in surface water has attracted more and more attention, which caused many water quality problems, including disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Algal organic matter (AOM) including intracellular organic matter (IOM) and extracellular organic matter (EOM), was a well-known precursor to DBPs formation in drinking water. This study evaluated the effect of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on the cell integrity, IOM release and DBPs formation during subsequent chlorination of Chlorella sp. Results showed the damage rates of algal cells increased to 40.1% after the high UV irradiation of 528 mJ/cm2, which contributed to the release of IOM. In addition, UV irradiation was effective in reducing the formation of haloacetic acids (HAAs) both in AOM and IOM, but promoted the formation of nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs) from AOM in subsequent chlorination. Furthermore, neutral pH exerted a positive effect on the formation of DBPs. UV irradiation decreased the bromine substitution factor (BSF) value of AOM at a high bromide level. The BSF values increased with increasing of the concentration of bromide. Moreover, more amino acids and low molecular weight precursors were produced after UV irradiation in filtered supernatant, which contributed to the formation of N-DBPs with algal chlorination. Overall, this information demonstrated pre-oxidation of UV irradiation could be used to treat the algal-rich drinking water.

Abstract:Blue-green algae commonly bloom in fresh water in summer, producing extra- and intra-cellular algal organic matters, which are important precursors for disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation. In this study, we evaluated the effect of pre-oxidation with ferrate(vi) (FeO4 2-, Fe(vi)) on the characterization of intracellular organic matter (IOM) and extracellular organic matter (EOM). The results indicated that soluble microbial-like products of EOM and IOM decreased and humic acid-like products of IOM increased, which would influence the DBP formation in the subsequent chlorination step. Therefore, in this study, the effect of Fe(vi) pre-oxidation on the DBP formation from IOM and EOM with subsequent chlorination was also investigated. For Chlorella sp., EOM presented no significant change, and IOM presented a reduction of THMs (8.2%) after Fe(vi) oxidation at a dosage of 16 mg L-1. For P. limnetica, EOM and IOM both exhibited reduction of trihalomethanes (THMs) and chloral hydrate (CH) after Fe(vi) oxidation. Besides, THMs had the lowest concentration at pH 8.0 in all four solutions. Haloacetonitriles (HANs) and haloketones (HKs) showed slight changes with increasing pH values. Due to the frequent detection of bromide (Br-) in surface water, the effect of bromide existence on THM formation was also investigated. The results indicated that all brominated DBPs increased, and chlorinated DBPs decreased with the increase in bromide concentration. In addition, the bromine substitution factor (BSF) of Chlorella sp. and P. limnetica both increased with the increase in Br- concentration.
Formation and Speciation of Disinfection Byproducts in Desalinated Seawater Blended with Treated Drinking Water During Chlorination

Abstract:Desalinated seawater containing bromide ion (Br−) blended with drinking water may produce brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs) during chlorination, which would pose a potential threat to human health when incorporated into the municipal water supply system. This study investigated the formation and speciation of twenty-one DBPs during chlorination in two desalinated seawater blends, i.e., treated drinking water blended with reverse osmosis (RO) permeate and post-treatment (PT) product water. After chlorination, the number and concentrations of DBPs formed in the desalinated seawater obviously enhanced, with chlorinated DBPs (Cl-DBPs) dominating. Sixteen DBPs were found in both RO and PT blends samples during chlorination, in which haloacetic acids (HAAs) had the highest concentration, followed by trihalomethanes (THMs) and halogen acetonitriles (HANs). When the volume of desalinated seawater in the blends was increased, the transformation from Cl-DBPs to Br-DBPs was observed for THMs and HANs, indicating that Br− was more easily incorporated into THMs and HANs than HAAs. Additionally, more Br− participated in the DBPs formation per unit dissolved organic carbon and Br-DBPs/DBPs increased, when the blended ratio of the desalinated seawater increased. The DBP-associated toxicity in the blends was estimated based on the toxicity-weighted concentration with Br-HANs as the predominant contributor, followed by Cl-HAAs.

Abstract:Acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) is a life-threatening condition whose incidence is steadily increasing although still lower than the corresponding lithiasic forms: AAC represents around 5-10% of all cases of acute cholecystitis. The severity of the disease is due to the rapid evolution towards gallbladder necrosis and biliary peritonitis. AAC is more frequently a disease of the critically ill patient arising in postoperative courses or in stressing conditions. Not rarely, however, it may occur with no evident predisposing factors and it seems related, in such cases, to elderly ages and to atheromatous vascular conditions. The authors report two cases of idiopathic AAC in elderly patients: pathogenic and clinical features as well as therapeutic options are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:Due to increased freshwater demand across the globe, seawater desalination has become the technology of choice in augmenting water supplies in many parts of the world. The use of chemical disinfection is necessary in desalination plants for pre-treatment to control both biofouling as well as the post-disinfection of desalinated water. Although chlorine is the most commonly used disinfectant in desalination plants, its reaction with organic matter produces various disinfection by-products (DBPs) (e.g., trihalomethanes [THMs], haloacetic acids [HAAs], and haloacetonitriles [HANs]), and some DBPs are regulated in many countries due to their potential risks to public health. To reduce the formation of chlorinated DBPs, alternative oxidants (disinfectants) such as chloramines, chlorine dioxide, and ozone can be considered, but they also produce other types of DBPs. In addition, due to high levels of bromide and iodide concentrations in seawater, highly cytotoxic and genotoxic DBP species (i.e., brominated and iodinated DBPs) may form in distribution systems, especially when desalinated water is blended with other source waters having higher levels of organic matter. This article reviews the knowledge accumulated in the last few decades on DBP formation during seawater desalination, and summarizes in detail, the occurrence of DBPs in various thermal and membrane plants involving different desalination processes. The review also identifies the current challenges and future research needs for controlling DBP formation in seawater desalination plants and to reduce the potential toxicity of desalinated water.
Occurrence, toxicity, and control of halogenated aliphatic and phenolic disinfection byproducts in the chlorinated and chloraminated desalinated water

Abstract:Seawater desalination is widely used to overcome the freshwater shortage worldwide. However, even after three-stage reverse osmosis treatment, the desalinated water still contained 14.6 μg/L of aliphatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs), 384.2 ng/L of bromophenolic DBPs, 3.5 ng/L of iodophenolic DBPs, 1024.7 μg/L of Br-, 2.8 μg/L of I-, and 2.4 mg C/L of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). After the desalinated water was disinfected with chlor(am)ine, the concentrations of halogenated aliphatic and phenolic DBPs further increased, and bromophenolic DBPs were the toxicity forcing agents. When surface water was mixed with desalinated water and then chlorinated, the yield of aliphatic and phenolic DBPs significantly elevated. Separately chlorinating desalinated water and surface water before mixing could mitigate this adverse situation. Chloramine disinfection was more conducive to reducing the total calculated toxicity of disinfected desalinated waters and mixed waters compared to chlorine disinfection. The treatment of desalinated water with granular activated carbon could effectively remove DOC and UV254, leading to a reduction in the content of total organic halogen after chlor(am)ination. Although anion exchange resin could adsorb Br-, it also released the organic precursors of DBPs, ultimately increasing the yield of DBPs. The results of this study can provide a reference for the seawater desalination industry to improve seawater pre-treatment and desalination processes and thus minimize the DBPs.

Abstract:Seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) has been extensively applied to replenish the limited freshwater resources. One concern of such technology is the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the pre-chlorination process. For the SWRO tested in this study, the concentrations of trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs), and haloacetonitriles (HANs) increased by 35.1, 23.7 and 4.9μg/L, respectively, after a seawater sample (with UV254/DOC of 3.7L/mg·m and Br- of 50.9mg/L) was pre-chlorinated (1-2mg-Cl2/L). The dissolved organic matter (DOM) with molecular weight (MW) <1kDa dominated the formation of total THMs, HAAs and HANs. To further investigate DBPs precursors in the seawater, the DOM with MW<1kDa was fractionated to hydrophobic acids (HOA), hydrophobic bases (HOB), hydrophobic neutrals (HON), and hydrophilic substances (HIS). The excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectra analysis showed that most aromatic protein and fulvic acid of the DOM with MW<1kDa were present in the HON and HIS fractions. The HON fraction was the dominant precursor to form THMs and HAAs, while HIS controlled the formation of HANs. Furthermore, bromo - DBPs dominated the total DBPs yields after the chlorination of HIS fraction.
Phototransformation of Halophenolic Disinfection Byproducts in Receiving Seawater: Kinetics, Products, and Toxicity.

Abstract:Flushing toilet with seawater is an effective method for preserving freshwater resources, but it introduces iodide and bromide ions into domestic wastewater. During chlorine disinfection, iodide and bromide ions in the saline wastewater effluent lead to the formation of iodinated and brominated aromatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Examples of aromatic DBPs include iodophenolic, bromophenolic and chlorophenolic compounds, which generally display substantially higher toxicity than haloaliphatic DBPs. This paper presented for the first time the rates of phototransformation of 21 newly identified halophenolic DBPs in seawater, the receiving waterbody of the wastewater effluent. The phototransformation rate constants (k) were in the range from 7.75 × 10-4 to 4.62 × 10-1 h-1, which gave half-lives of 1.5-895 h. A quantitative structure-activity relationship was established for the phototransformation of halophenolic DBPs as logk=-0.0100×ΔGf0+5.7528×logMW+0.3686×pKa-19.1607, where ΔGf0 is standard Gibbs formation energy, MW is molecular weight, and pKa is dissociation constant. This model well predicted the k values of halophenolic DBPs. Among the tested DBPs, 2,4,6-triiodophenol and 2,6-diiodo-4-nitrophenol were found to exhibit relatively high risks on marine organisms, based on toxicity indices and half-lives. In seawater, the two DBPs underwent photonucleophilic substitutions by bromide, chloride and hydroxide ions, resulting in the conversion to their bromophenolic and chlorophenolic counterparts (which are less toxic than the parent iodophenolic DBPs) and to their hydroxyphenolic counterparts (iodo(hydro)quinones, which are more toxic than the parent iodophenolic DBPs). The formed iodo(hydro)quinones further transformed to hydroxyl-iodo(hydro)quinones, which have lower toxicity than the parent compounds.
[Formation of Brominated Disinfection By-products in Low Temperature Multi-effect Distillation (LT-MED) Process for Seawater Desalination].

Abstract:Changes in water quality and brominated disinfection by-products (Br-DBPs) during a low temperature multi-effect distillation (LT-MED) process for seawater desalination were investigated. The concentrations of bromide ion and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) in the seawater (i.e. the influent of LT-MED) were 54.6 mg·L-1 and 1.7 L·(mg·m)-1, respectively. The tryptophan-like aromatic protein, fulvic acid-like and soluble microbial by-product-like organics dominated the fluorescent dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the seawater. After the NaClO pre-chlorination in the LT-MED process, the concentrations of DBPs in the seawater were significantly increased, especially Br-DBPs, and Bromoform(CHBr3) accounted for 100% of total trihalomethanes (THMs), Bromoacetic acid (C2H3BrO2) and dibromoacetic acid (C2H2Br2O2) accounted for 31.9% and 68.1%, respectively of total haloacetic acids (HAAs), while 4-Bromophenol (C6H5BrO) accounted for 100% of total halogenated phenols (HPs). The formation of THMs, HAAs and HPs was not detected in the finishing water produced by the LT-MED desalination process, but these substances were retained in the concentrated brine, of which THMs, HAAs and HPs were 56.9, 35.0 and 0.1 μg·L-1.
Phototransformation of Brominated Disinfection Byproducts and Toxicity Elimination in Sunlit-Ozonated Reclaimed Water

Abstract:Ozonation is universally used during water treatment but can form hazardous brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs). While sunlight exposure is advised to reduce the risk of Br-DBPs, their phototransformation pathways remain insufficiently understood. Here, sunlight irradiation was found to reduce adsorbable organic bromine by 63%. Applying high-resolution mass spectrometry, the study investigated transformations of dissolved organic matter in sunlit-ozonated reclaimed water, revealing the number and abundance of assigned formulas decreased after irradiation. The Br-DBPs with O/C < 0.6 and MW > 400 Da were decreased or removed after irradiation, with the majority being CHOBr compounds. The peak intensity reduction ratio of CHOBr compounds correlated positively with double bound equivalent minus oxygen ratios but negatively with O/C, suggesting that photo-susceptible CHOBr compounds were highly unsaturated. Mass difference analysis revealed that the photodegradation pathways were mainly oxidation aligned with debromination. Three typical CHOBr molecular structures were resolved, and their photoproducts were proposed. Toxicity estimates indicated decreased toxicity in these photoproducts compared to their parent compounds, in line with experimentally determined values. Our proposed phototransformation pathways for Br-DBPs enhance our comprehension of their degradation and irradiation-induced toxicity reduction in reclaimed water, further illuminating their transformation under sunlight in widespread environmental scenarios.
Non-target screening and prioritization of organic contaminants in seawater desalination and their ecological risk assessment

Abstract:The impact of desalination brine on the marine environment is a global concern. Regarding this, salinity is generally accepted as the major environmental factor in desalination concentrate. However, recent studies have shown that the influence of organic contaminants in brine cannot be ignored. Therefore, a non-targeted screening method based on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC × GC-qMS) was developed for identifying organic contaminants in the desalination brine. A total of 404 compounds were tentatively identified from four seawater desalination plants (three reverse osmosis plants and one multiple effect distillation plant) in China. The identified compounds were prioritized based on their persistence, bioaccumulation, ecotoxicity, usage, and detection frequency. Twenty-one (21) compounds (seven phthalates, ten pesticides, four trihalomethanes) were then selected for further quantitative analysis and ecological risk assessment, including compounds from the priority list along with substances from the same chemical classes. Ecologically risky substances in brine include diisobutylphthalate and bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate, atrazine and acetochlor, and bromoform. Most of the contaminants come from raw seawater, and no high risk contaminants introduced by the desalination process have been found except for disinfection by-products. In brine discharge management, people believed that all pollution in raw seawater was concentrated by desalination process. This study shows that not all pollutants are concentrated during the desalination process. In this study, the total concentration of pesticide in the brine increased by 58.42%. The concentration of ∑PAEs decreased by 13.65% in reverse osmosis desalination plants and increased by 10.96% in the multi-effect distillation plant. The concentration of trihalomethane increased significantly in the desalination concentrate. The change in the concentration of pollutants in the desalination concentrate was related to the pretreatment method and the chemical characteristics of the contaminants. The method and results given in this study hinted a new idea to identify and control the environmental impact factors of brine.

Bioanalytical and chemical assessment of the disinfection by-product formation potential: role of organic matter

Abstract:Disinfection by-products (DBP) formed from natural organic matter and disinfectants like chlorine and chloramine may cause adverse health effects. Here, we evaluate how the quantity and quality of natural organic matter and other precursors influence the formation of DBPs during chlorination and chloramination using a comprehensive approach including chemical analysis of regulated and emerging DBPs, total organic halogen quantification, organic matter characterisation and bioanalytical tools. In vitro bioassays allow us to assess the hazard potential of DBPs early in the chain of cellular events, when the DBPs react with their molecular target(s) and activate stress response and defence mechanisms. Given the reactive properties of known DBPs, a suite of bioassays targeting reactive modes of toxic action including genotoxicity and sensitive early warning endpoints such as protein damage and oxidative stress were evaluated in addition to cytotoxicity. Coagulated surface water was collected from three different drinking water treatment plants, along with reverse osmosis permeate from a desalination plant, and DBP formation potential was assessed after chlorination and chloramination. While effects were low or below the limit of detection before disinfection, the observed effects and DBP levels increased after disinfection and were generally higher after chlorination than after chloramination, indicating that chlorination forms higher concentrations of DBPs or more potent DBPs in the studied waters. Bacterial cytotoxicity, assessed using the bioluminescence inhibition assay, and induction of the oxidative stress response were the most sensitive endpoints, followed by genotoxicity. Source waters with higher dissolved organic carbon levels induced increased DBP formation and caused greater effects in the endpoints related to DNA damage repair, glutathione conjugation/protein damage and the Nrf2 oxidative stress response pathway after disinfection. Fractionation studies indicated that all molecular weight fractions of organic carbon contributed to the DBP formation potential, with the humic rich fractions forming the greatest amount of DBPs, while the low molecular weight fractions formed more brominated DBPs due to the high bromide to organic carbon ratio. The presence of higher bromide concentrations also led to a higher fraction of brominated DBPs as well as proportionally higher effects. This study demonstrates how a suite of analytical and bioanalytical tools can be used to effectively characterise the precursors and formation potential of DBPs.
Assessing the role of different dissolved organic carbon and bromide concentrations for disinfection by-product formation using chemical analysis and bioanalysis

Abstract:Concerns regarding disinfection by-product (DBP) formation during drinking water treatment have led water utilities to apply treatment processes to reduce the concentration of DBP precursor natural organic matter (NOM). However, these processes often do not remove bromide, leading to high bromide to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) ratios after treatment, which can increase the formation of more toxic brominated DBPs. In the current study, we investigated the formation and effect of DBPs in a matrix of synthetic water samples containing different concentrations of bromide and DOC after disinfection with chlorine. Trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids were analysed by chemical analysis, while effect was evaluated using in vitro bioassays indicative of the oxidative stress response and bacterial toxicity. While the addition of increasing bromide concentrations did not alter the sum molar concentration of DBPs formed, the speciation changed, with greater bromine incorporation with an increasing Br:DOC ratio. However, the observed effect did not correlate with the Br:DOC ratio, but instead, effect increased with increasing DOC concentration. Water samples with low DOC and high bromide did not exceed the available oxidative stress response effect-based trigger value (EBT), while all samples with high DOC, irrespective of the bromide concentration, exceeded the EBT. This suggests that treatment processes that remove NOM can improve drinking water quality, even if they are unable to remove bromide. Further, iceberg modelling showed that detected DBPs only explained a small fraction of the oxidative stress response, supporting the application of both chemical analysis and bioanalysis for monitoring DBP formation.
Effects of Chlorination on the Fluorescence of Seawater: Pronounced Changes of Emission Intensity and Their Relationships with the Formation of Disinfection Byproducts.

Abstract:Chlorination of coastal (CS) and deep ocean (DO) seawater was accompanied by a prominent decrease (of up to 70%) of the intensity of its emission which was measured using a 315 nm excitation wavelength. Deconvolution of the emission spectra of CS and DO seawater showed that these spectra comprised three Gauss-shaped bands. The intensities of two of these bands decreased rapidly as the halogenation proceeded. For both DO and CS seawater, two stages of changes of their fluorescence were observed. The first stage in which the relative changes of the fluorescence intensity (ΔF/F) were between zero to 0.30 and 0.40 was not accompanied by the release of individual disinfection byproduct (DBP) species. For ΔF/F values above the corresponding thresholds, the relative changes of fluorescence intensity were well correlated with the concentrations of individual DBP species such as trihalomethanes and haloacetonitriles. R2 values for CHBr3, CHBr2Cl and CHBrCl2 formed in DO seawater were 0.83, 0.80 and 0.68, respectively while for CS seawater, the corresponding R2 values were 0.91, 0.93 and 0.92. The presented data demonstrate that the intrinsic chemistry of DBP formation and dissolved organic matter (DOM) halogenation in seawater can be well quantified based on the examination of changes of its fluorescence. This approach can also be employed for practical monitoring of changes of properties of marine DOM and generation of DBPs in desalination, marine aquaculture and other processes.
Photolytic dehalogenation of disinfection byproducts in water by natural sunlight irradiation

Abstract:The aqueous photolysis of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) by natural sunlight irradiation was studied to determine their photolytic dehalogenation kinetics. Total organic halogen analysis was used to quantify the dehalogenation extents of DBPs during outdoor photolysis experiments. Dichloroacetamide, chloral hydrate, chloroform, dichloroacetonitrile, monochloro-, monobromo-, dichloro-, dibromo-, and trichloroacetic acids were generally resistant to photolytic dehalogenation and showed less than 10% reduction after 6 h sunlight irradiation. Monoiodoacetic acid, tribromoacetic acid, bromoform, dibromoacetonitrile, and trichloronitromethane showed moderate to high dehalogenation degrees with half-lives of 4.0-19.3 h. Diiodoacetic acid, triiodoacetic acid, and iodoform degraded rapidly under the sunlight irradiation and exhibited half-lives of 5.3-10.2 min. In general, the photosensitive cleavage of carbon-halogen bonds of DBPs increased with increasing number of halogens (tri- > di- > mono-halogenated) and size of the substituted halogens (I > Br > Cl). Nitrate, nitrite, and pH had little impact on the photodehalogenation of DBPs under typical levels in surface waters. The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) inhibited the photodehalogenation of DBPs by light screening. The NOM inhibiting effects were more pronounced for the fast degrading iodinated DBPs. The results of this study improve our understanding about the photolytic dehalogenation of wastewater-derived DBPs in surface waters during water reuse.
Degradation of organics and formation of DBPs in the combined LED-UV and chlorine processes: Effects of water matrix and fluorescence analysis

Abstract:Combined processes of light-emitting diodes ultraviolet (LED UV) and chlorination (Cl2) are alternative disinfection technologies in drinking water, while the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) needs to be evaluated. This study investigated the impacts of critical water matrix factors on the DBP formation in the combined processes. Moreover, the correlation between the degraded natural organic matter (NOM) and the formed DBP was studied. Simultaneous UV/Cl2 outperformed single Cl2 and sequential combined processes in degrading humic acids (HA) and resulted in the highest DBP yield. Iodide at 5-20 μg/L and bromide at 0.05-0.2 mg/L slightly affected the degradation of organics, while increased the formation of brominated DBPs up to 36.6 μg/L. pH 6 was regarded as the optimum pH, achieving high efficiency of HA degradation and a lower level of total DBP formation than pH 7 and 8 by 11 % and 24 %, respectively. Compared to HA samples (46.8-103.9 μg/L per mg/L DOC), NOM in canal water were less aromatic and yielded fewer DBPs (19.6 and 21.2 μg/L per mg/L DOC). However, the extremely high bromide in site 1 samples (18.6 mg/L) shifted the chlorinated DBPs to their brominated analogues, posting around 1 order of magnitude higher levels of toxicities than HA samples. The reduction of absorbance at 254 nm (UV254) correlated with all DBP categories in HA samples, while the correlation coefficients were compromised when included in the canal samples. For the first time, this study found that parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) would neglect the fluorescence change caused by iodide/bromide in UV/Cl2, while the changes could be captured by self-organising map (SOM) trained with full fluorescence spectra. Fluorescence Ex/Em pairs were proposed to predict DBP formation, suggesting a potential method to develop an online monitoring system for DBPs.

Abstract:This study systematically quantified the impacts of different operation conditions, e.g., pH, chlorine dosages, contact times, and temperatures towards the disinfection by-product (DBP) formation, integrated toxicity, and structural changes in seawater natural organic matter during seawater chlorination. Higher concentrations of total DBPs were found under longer contact times, higher chlorine dosages, higher temperatures, and lower pH. The concentration of tribromomethane, the most abundant DBP, was found lowest at pH 10. Monobromoacetic acid, dibromoacetonitrile, and dibromoacetaldehyde were the three main contributors to integrated cyto- and geno-toxicity, stressing the need to monitor DBPs based on their contributions to integrated toxicity, regardless they are regulated or nonregulated. The concentrations of total organic chlorine remained stable under different conditions, while those of total organic bromine increased with increasing contact times, chlorine dosages, and temperatures, but with decreasing pH, indicating the changes of toxicity in chlorinated seawater compared to drinking water or groundwater. Changes of ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm and fluorescence excitation emission matrix values are useful indicators for monitoring the concentrations of high molecular weight adsorbable organic bromine and total organic halogen under all operating conditions.

Abstract:During the production of high quality recycled water by reverse osmosis membrane filtration secondary effluent must be disinfected to limit biofouling on the membrane surface. Advanced Water Treatment Plants in South East Queensland, Australia use disinfectant contact times ranging from 30 min up to 24 h. Disinfectants such as chlorine and chloramines react with effluent organic matter to generate disinfection by-products (DBPs) which could be potentially hazardous to human health if the water is destined for supplementing public water supplies. In this context, secondary effluents are of concern because of their high total organic carbon content which can act as DBP precursors. Also, effluent organic matter may form different DBPs to those formed from natural organic matter during conventional drinking water treatment, either in quantity, identity or simply in the abundance of different DBPs relative to each other. It cannot be assumed per se with certainty that DBP formation will be affected in the same way by operational changes as in drinking water production. Response surface modelling has been employed in this study at the bench scale to investigate the effect of reaction time (0-24 h), pH (5.5-8.5), temperature (23-35 °C), disinfection strategy (chlorine vs chloramines used prior to membrane treatment) and the interaction between these different parameters on DBP formation during disinfection of secondary effluent. The concentration of halogenated DBPs formed during the first 24 h of reaction with the different disinfectants followed the order chlorination >> in line-formed monochloramine > pre-formed monochloramine. Contact time with chlorine was the major influencing factor on DBP formation during chlorination, except for the bromine-containing trihalomethanes and dibromoacetonitrile for which pH was more significant. Chlorination at high pH led to an increased formation of chloral hydrate, trichloronitromethane, dibromoacetonitrile and the four trihalomethanes while the opposite effect was observed for the other targeted DBPs. Temperature was identified as the least influencing parameter compared to pH and reaction time for all DBPs in all the disinfection strategies, except for the formation of chloral hydrate where pH and temperature had a similar significance and bromoform that was similarly affected by temperature and reaction time. Chloramines employed at pH 8.5 reduced the concentration of all studied DBPs compared to pH 5.5. Furthermore, reaction time was the most significant factor for trichloronitromethane, chloroform, trichloroacetonitrile, dichloroacetonitrile and bromochloroacetonitrile formation while pH was the most influencing factor affecting the formation of the remaining DBPs.

Abstract:Reverse osmosis (RO)-based desalination and advanced water purification facilities have inherent challenges associated with concentrate management and disposal. Although enhanced permeate recovery and concentrate minimization are desired, membrane scaling due to inorganic constituents, such as silica, calcium, phosphate, and iron, hinders the process. To solve this problem, a new diatom-based photobiological process has been developed to remove these scaling constituents by biological uptake and precipitation. In this study, RO concentrate samples were collected from a full-scale advanced water reclamation facility in California and were treated in 3.8 and 57 L photobioreactors inoculated with a brackish water diatom Pseudostaurosira trainorii PEWL001 using light-emitting diode bulbs or natural sunlight as a light source. The photobiological treatment removed 95% of reactive silica and 64% of calcium and enabled additional water recovery using a secondary RO at a recovery rate up to 66%. This represents 95% overall recovery, including 85% recovery in the primary RO unit. In addition to the scaling constituents, the photobiological treatment removed 12 pharmaceuticals and personal care products, as well as N-nitrosodimethylamine, from RO concentrate samples primarily via photolysis. This novel approach has a strong potential for application to brackish water desalination and advanced water purification in arid and semiarid areas.

Abstract:The changes in dissolved organic matter (DOM) throughout the treatment processes in a drinking water treatment plant in Sweden and the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were evaluated by using ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry (resolution of ∼500,000 at m/z 400) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Mass spectrometric results revealed that flocculation induced substantial changes in the DOM and caused quantitative removal of DOM constituents that usually are associated with DBP formation. While half of the chromophoric DOM (CDOM) was removed by flocculation, ∼4-5 mg L(-1) total organic carbon remained in the finished water. A conservative approach revealed the formation of ∼800 mass spectrometry ions with unambiguous molecular formula assignments that contained at least one halogen atom. These molecules likely represented new DBPs, which could not be prevented by the flocculation process. The most abundant m/z peaks, associated with formed DBPs, could be assigned to C5HO3Cl3, C5HO3Cl2Br, and C5HO3ClBr2 using isotope simulation patterns. Other halogen-containing formulas suggested the presence of halogenated polyphenolic and aromatic acid-type structures, which was supported by possible structures that matched the lower molecular mass range (maximum of 10 carbon atoms) of these DBPs. 1H NMR before and after disinfection revealed an ∼2% change in the overall 1H NMR signals supporting a significant change in the DOM caused by disinfection. This study underlines the fact that a large and increasing number of people are exposed to a very diverse pool of organohalogens through water, by both drinking and uptake through the skin upon contact. Nontarget analytical approaches are indispensable for revealing the magnitude of this exposure and to test alternative ways to reduce it.
