Abstract:Adsorption has been proven to be the most efficient method for quickly lowering the concentration of dissolved dyes in an effluent. In this regard, activated carbon is the most widely used adsorbent for removal of dyes from aqueous solution. However, the high cost of production and regeneration make it uneconomical. Therefore, inorganic adsorbents (e. g. zeolites) with high surface areas have been used as alternatives to carbon adsorbents. Microporous zeolites ZSM-5, NH4-Beta, MCM-22 and mesoporous materials MCM-41 have been investigated for the removal of dyes from aqueous solutions and they show effective adsorption performance. SBA-15 possesses a larger pore size and pore wall thickness than MCM-41. As a result, SBA-15 has greater potential for the adsorption of methylene blue with larger molecule size and higher hydrothermal stability than the M41S family. SBA-15 is an excellent adsorbent for methylene blue (MB), exhibiting 280 mg g(-1) adsorption capacity and about 100% fading rate for MB. The adsorptive process is so fast that adsorption equilibrium is achieved in 5 min. In addition, SBA-15 can be effectively recovered by calcination and reused 10 times without significant loss in removal of MB from aqueous solution. The efficient adsorption of MB molecules onto SBA-15 was ascribed to MB adsorbed into the pore channels of SBA-15, which was confirmed by nitrogen physisorption analysis of the adsorbent before and after adsorption. The long reuse life of the adsorbent suggests a high potential for application in industry. (C) 2010 Society of Chemical Industry
Adsorption of Methylene Blue by Halloysite/MnFe2O4 Nanocomposites

Abstract:Halloysite/MnFe2O4 nanocomposites have been proposed as a novel material which can be used in magnetic and electromagnetic applications. In this study, we fabricated two kinds of halloysite/MnFe2O4 nanocomposites. The XRD and TEM characterizations suggested that ferrite nanoparticles were mainly adhered on the outer surface of HNTs (named as WMH) and in the inner wall (MH), respectively. Both MH and WMH were applied to adsorb methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The results indicated that both MH and WMH can remove more than 97% MB at a dosage of 2 g L-1 and initial MB concentration of 20 mg L-1. The adsorption processes by both nanocomposites fit pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm with correlation coefficient of > 0.99. WMH (19.19 mg g(-1)) shows slightly higher maximum adsorption capacity than MH (18.52 mg g(-1)), contradicts to the fact that the mesopore volume of MH is 30% larger than that of WMH. It can be reconciled by the strong bonding between the outer surface ferrite nanoparticles of WMH and the MB molecules, which greatly enhanced the MB adsorption capacity. In addition, the dimethylamino groups of MB molecules were preferably removed, suggesting the MB degradation by the ferrite nanoparticles during adsorption. Furthermore, both WMH and MH can be easily magnetic separated and recycled. The MB removal efficiency can be maintained at after regenerated for 5 times. Ascribed to the advantages of easily recycling and regeneration, low cost, and MB degradation, the halloysite-MnFe2O4 nanocomposites are potential environmental friendly adsorbents for removing organic pollutants.
Synthesis of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Poly(acrylic acid) Microgels via Visible-Light-Triggered Polymerization as a Self-Sedimentary Cationic Basic Dye Adsorbent

Abstract:In this study, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/poly(acrylic acid) (CMC/PAA) microgels were successfully synthesized via visible-light-triggered free-radical polymerization to remove methylene blue (MB) from water. The microgels had a loose and porous 3-D network structure, exhibiting excellent adsorption performance. The equilibrium adsorption capacity and the removal efficiency of the microgels reached approximately 1479 mg/g and 97%, respectively, when the initial concentration of MB was 300 mg/L. The adsorption kinetics was well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir isothermal model. Notably, CMC/PAA microgels could naturally settle and be separated from the MB solution. Furthermore, the recovery efficiency of the regenerated CMC/PAA microgels reached approximately 94% after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Abstract:Incorporation of nanoparticles into a three-dimensional porous framework to enhance adsorption capacity and recyclability of nanomaterial is of great significance for water contamination removal. Herein, a functionalized cellulose/MXene composite aerogel is prepared by the oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine hydrochloride and freeze-drying, which exhibits an excellent adsorption performance for methylene blue (MB). Characterization results show the successful combination of PDA and Ti3C2Tx into the cellulose aerogel with merits of light weight, high structural stability and high porosity. The adsorption process is understood more deeply through the adsorption kinetics. The Langmuir isotherm model was used to better fit the adsorption process, and the maximum adsorption capacity for MB reaches 168.93 mg g−1. Such a superior adsorption ability for MB is maintained in salt-containing water, or even a little higher when the concentration of NaCl is above 3%, recommending the functionalized cellulose/MXene composite aerogel for efficient removal of dyes in high-salt water environment.

Abstract:A new adsorbent of CMC-g-Poly(MAA-co-AAm)/Cloisite 30B (Hyd/C30B) nanocomposite hydrogel was synthesized by the free radical polymerization approach to eliminate methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater samples. The BET value for C30B, Hyd, and Hyd/C30B was determined 5.00, 0.83, and 2.42 m 2 /g, respectively, while, based on the MB removal method, the surface area for the mentioned adsorbents was calculated 133.12, 129.53, and 149.61 m 2 /g, respectively. The generated nano-hydrogel belonged to a type IV isotherm and had a pore size of 2–50 nm. In the MB adsorption process using the desired adsorbents, the maximum adsorption was attained at pH 8, temperature of 45 °C, time of 30 min, adsorbent dose of 0.8 g/L, and dye concentration of 10 mg/L. The swelling rate of the studied hydrogel depended on pH and temperature. The adsorption process increased with increasing temperature. The Gibbs free energy parameter and enthalpy had negative values, indicating that the degree of the spontaneity of the adsorption process increased at high temperatures. The data followed pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum MB adsorption using Hyd, Hyd/C30B, and C30B was computed to be 67.11 mg/g, 77.51 mg/g, and 70.42 mg/g, respectively. The adsorbents had a good ability to reduce industrial wastewater pollutants.

Abstract:Natural macromolecular-based hydrogels have unique advantages in pollutant adsorption due to their biodegradability and abundance of reactive functional groups. However, poor mechanical properties and adsorption capability limit their application. In this paper, Poly-(acrylamide-acrylic acid)/sesbania gum/bentonite (P(AM-AA)/SG/BT) composite hydrogel was prepared by in situ free-radical polymerization and applied to the adsorption for methylene blue (MB) and methylene green (MG). Relevant characterization, performance tests, and model analysis were used to investigate the preparation mechanism and absorption characteristics of MB and MG on P(AM-AA)/SG/BT. Our results indicated that SG, BT, and P(AM-AA) were combined through multiple mechanisms including functional group copolymerization, hydrogen bonding, and structural interweaving, which endowed P(AM-AA)/SG/BT composite hydrogel with good mechanical properties (tensile strength of 116 kPa, tensile elongation of 2645%, and over 90% recovery of compression deformation), high adsorption capacity (1226mg/g for MB and 783mg/g for MG, over 90% of removal rate at a dye concentration of 100mg/L), and good recyclability (the adsorption amount maintaining 86% of the initial amount and the desorption efficiency over 78% after 5 cycles). Adsorption of MB and MG on P(AM-AA)/SG/BT was consistent with the pseudo-second order equation, the intraparticle diffusion model and the Freundlich isotherm model, as well as spontaneous and exothermic for MB adsorption, while spontaneous and endothermic for MG adsorption. Clearly, P(AM-AA)/SG/BT composite hydrogel proved to be an efficient and effective adsorbent in PDW treatments.

Abstract:A cellulose-based sodium alginate/iron hydroxide (C/SA/Fe) composite hydrogel was fabricated by using epichlorohydrin as cross-linking agent as an effective adsorbent for dye. The physicochemical structure of the C/SA/Fe hydrogel was characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD and TG. The adsorption performance for the removal of methylene blue (MB) was investigated. In addition, the selective adsorption of cationic dye was also studied. The FTIR analysis revealed that the Fe(OH)3 colloidal particles was successfully combined in the cellulose/sodium alginate hydrogel. The modified hydrogel had better adsorption performance, and the maximum adsorption capacity of C/SA/Fe0.5 for MB was 105.93 mg/g according to the fitting results of adsorption isotherm. The kinetic study showed that MB adsorption of C/SA/Fe was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption of MB in C/SA/Fe was dominated by chemisorption mechanism such as ion exchange or electron sharing. The adsorption data fits well with the Langmuir model. Thermodynamics analysis showed that the MB adsorption by C/SA/Fe was exothermic, spontaneous, favorable and feasible. After five adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity was almost unchanged. So, the C/SA/Fe hydrogel is a potential material in the field of the recovery of agricultural by-products or other bio-based cellulose, or environmental protection, etc.

Abstract:In recent years, the scarcity of pure water resources has received a lot of attention from society because of the increasing amount of pollution from industrial waste. It is very important to use low-cost adsorbents with high-adsorption performance to reduce water pollution. In this work, a gel adsorbent with a high-adsorption performance on methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II) was prepared from bamboo nanocellulose (BCNF) (derived from waste bamboo paper) and montmorillonite nanosheet (MMTNS) cross-linked by polyethyleneimine (PEI). The resulting gel adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS), etc. The results indicated that the MB and Cu(II) adsorption capacities of the resulting gel adsorbent increased with the solution pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature before equilibrium. The adsorption processes of MB and Cu(II) fitted well with the fractal-like pseudo-second-order model. The maximal adsorption capacities on MB and Cu(II) calculated by the Sips model were 361.9 and 254.6 mg/g, respectively. The removal of MB and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions mainly included electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, hydrogen bonding interaction, etc. These results suggest that the resulting gel adsorbent is an ideal material for the removal of MB and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:Sago pith cellulose nanofibril (SPCNF) aerogel derived from sago pith waste (SPW) was successfully produced through three consecutive steps, namely dewaxing and delignification, ultra-sonication and homogenization and freeze drying. The aerogel was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results of the analyses collectively showed that lignin & hemicellulose were absent in the SPCNF aerogel product which has a high crystallinity index of 88%. The diameters of individual nanofibril constituents of the SPCNF were between 15 and 30 nm and aspect ratios >1000 were observed. The SPCNF aerogel, with a density measured at 2.1 mg/cm3, was efficient in methylene blue (MB) removal with a maximum MB adsorption of 222.2 mg/g at 20 °C. The adsorption of MB onto the SPCNF aerogel was rapid and found to follow a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with the adsorption isotherm being in congruence with the Langmuir model. SPCNF aerogel exhibited outstanding MB removal efficacies with 5 mg and 20 mg of SPCNF capable of removing over 90% and almost 99% MB, respectively. The optimized pH value and temperature for MB adsorption were determined as pH 7 and 20 °C.

Abstract:In this study, an environmentally friendly lignin-based hybrid hydrogel (LS/OMMT) was prepared by grafting of acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA) onto calcium lignosulfonate (LS) and homogeneously distributing organic montmorillonite (OMMT) using an ultrasonic technique. FT-IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, EDS, BET, and XPS were used to characterize the physicochemical and structural properties of LS/OMMT. Then, LS/OMMT was applied to remove methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution and a systematic study of pH, contact time and initial MB concentration was carried out. The MB adsorption capacity on LS/OMMT was up to 492.7 mg g −1 at 313.15 K and pH 7.0. The Langmuir model well described the MB adsorption on LS/OMMT and the calculated thermodynamic parameters, such as ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°, suggested that MB adsorption on LS/OMMT was spontaneous and endothermic. LS/OMMT adsorption of MB followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Electrostatic attraction and hydrogen-bonding interaction were the mechanisms of adsorption. As a result, this study illustrates that LS/OMMT is an environmentally friendly and efficient adsorbent for wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract:Abstract The urgent problem to solve is how to design a kind of green and porous adsorbent that can effectively remove dye pollutants in the field of the sewage treatment. The objectives of this investigation are to incorporate zeolitic imidazolate frameworks‐8 (ZIF‐8) particles in situ onto the surface of multiwalled carbon tubes (MWCNTs) and integrate them into an agarose‐sodium alginate (ASA) double network hydrogel. The resulting composite hydrogel beads, denoted as MWCNTs/ZIF‐8/ASA (MZASA), are synthesized using calcium ion crosslinking. The addition of agarose is employed to create a dual‐crosslinked hydrogel, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of the ASA hydrogel. By incorporating MWCNTs/ZIF‐8 nanoparticles, the surface area of the MZASA hydrogel is augmented, leading to an enhancement in dye adsorption capacity. In batch sorption mode, the maximum absorbency of the resulting hydrogel beads for methylene blue (MB) is 493.799 mg/g, which was a third greater than that of pure SA beads. Absorption of MB obeys the pseudo‐second‐order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting monolayer chemisorption adsorption. Analysis of the thermodynamics proves that the entire adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. Moreover, the MZASA hydrogel beads show high selectivity for cationic dyes in the mixed dye test. Hence, the synthesized MZASA hydrogel beads serve as a highly effective, innovative, and reusable adsorbent for eliminating cationic dyes from water‐based solutions.

Study on the adsorption performance of modified high silica fly ash for methylene blue

Abstract:Presently, there are several issues associated with solid waste fly ash, such as its accumulation and storage, low comprehensive utilization rate, lack of high-value utilization technology, environmental risk and ecological impact. Thus, based on the high silica content and adsorption characteristics of fly ash, two novel adsorbents, namely mesoporous silica-based material (MSM) and sodium dodecyl sulfate-modified fly ash (SDS-FA), were prepared using an ultrasound-assisted alkali fusion-hydrothermal method and surface modification method. Furthermore, effects of adsorbent dosage, initial pH, contact time, and initial concentration of the solution on the adsorption of the organic pollutant methylene blue (MB) by fly ash, MSM, and SDS-FA were investigated to select the optimal modified high silica fly ash adsorbent. Based on the adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics, together with SEM, XRD, FTIR and BET analyses, the adsorption mechanism of MSM for MB was revealed. The results showed that under the conditions of an adsorbent dosage of 2 g L-1, initial pH of 9, contact time of 150 min, and initial concentration of 100 mg L-1, MSM and SDS-FA exhibited removal efficiencies of 92.69% and 84.64% for MB, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of fly ash alone. The adsorption of MB by MSM and SDS-FA followed the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating monolayer adsorption with chemical adsorption as the dominant mechanism. The mechanism of the adsorption of MB by MSM is mainly the result of the synergistic effect among its increased specific surface area, hydrogen bonding, ion exchange, and electrostatic interactions. After five cycles of adsorption-desorption process, the removal efficiency of MSM for MB consistently remained above 80%. Therefore, MSM can serve as a valuable reference for the resource utilization of fly ash and remediation of dye-polluted wastewater.

Abstract:Herein, magnetic starch-based composite hydrogel microspheres (SCHMs) were produced via a Diels-Alder reaction during spray drying. The adsorption behavior of SCHMs for methylene blue (MB) was investigated systematically. The adsorption process could be described by Langmuir isothermal model and pseudo-first-order kinetic model with R2 >¬†0.95 and R2 >¬†0.98, respectively, resulting from its dominating physical adsorption. The thermodynamic studies showed the adsorption was spontaneous and the nature of adsorption was endothermic due to that the free energy ‚ąÜG was a negative value and the enthalpy ‚ąÜH was a positive value. The absorbent had good reusability with 90.5% of removal efficiency after 5 cycles. In addition, the effects of concentration, pH and temperature on the adsorption of MB by SCHMs were optimized using the Box-Behnken Design and response surface methodology. The order of three factors affecting the adsorption capacity of SCHMS is initial pH¬†>¬†initial concentration¬†>¬†temperature. Due to their safe, non-toxic and easily recycled advantages, SCHMs have the potential to be applied to water treatment in the future.

Abstract:Large specific surface area obtained by pyrolyzed biomass is considered as a vital factor in improving the dye adsorption performance. However, pyrolysis would cause the inevitable destruction of the surface functional groups of biomass. Herein, a biomass adsorbent based on sargassum fusiforme without pyrolysis was employed for the removal of methylene blue (MB). Combining the FTIR, XPS, SEM, and BET analysis, sargassum fusiforme bio-adsorbent (SFBA) was found to have low specific surface area whereas rich functional groups, including carboxyl, carbonyl and hydroxyl groups. SFBA presented high adsorption performance towards MB with a maximum adsorption capacity of 1154.05 mg/g, demonstrating that the high adsorption performance could be achieved by abundant functional groups rather than large specific surface area. In this paper, various adsorption parameters including pH, concentration, contact time, and temperature have also been discussed. The results indicated that the kinetic and isotherm models of SFBA followed the pseudo-secondary kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The negative thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption process is spontaneous and exothermic. The SFBA enriched with functional groups exhibited high adsorption performance as well as simple fabrication, and abundant sources that could provide a novel alternative for the treatment of dye wastewater.

Abstract:Eco-friendly nanocomposite aerogels were prepared as adsorbents for the removal of a model pollutant (methylene blue, MB) from water. These aerogels were comprised of hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles embedded within a polymer matrix consisting of a semi-interpenetrating network of xanthan gum (XG) and polyacrylic acid (PAA). Microscopy and BET analysis showed that the aerogels formed had a nanofibrous porous microstructure with a surface area of 89 m2/g. Rheological analysis showed that the aerogels were viscoelastic materials whose elasticity increased with increasing HA concentration (up to 5 w/w%). The aerogels were effective at removing MB from water, exhibiting an adsorption capacity of 130 mg/g after 200 min. The binding of the MB to the aerogels was mainly attributed to hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction. A reusability test showed that the MB removal efficiency of over 86% was preserved after 10 cycles of adsorption-desorption. These results suggest that our nanocomposite aerogels may be useful for the efficient removal of anionic pollutants from wastewater and water supplies due to their ease of synthesis, cost-effectiveness, good mechanical properties, high thermal stability, and good adsorption performance.

Abstract:Carboxymethyl cellulose-based hydrogel enhanced by two-dimensional montmorillonite nanosheets (CMC-MMTs Gel) has been successfully synthesized throguh polymerization for methylene blue (MB) removal from water. Structure characterization shows that the introduction of two-dimensional montmorillonite nanosheets (2D MMTs) into CMC-based hyddrogel results in a roguh surface and increased porosity. Adsorption tests demonstrate that the adsorption rate and adsorption capacity of CMC-based hydrogel increase significantly with the increase in 2D MMTs content, and a high adsorption capacity of 410 mg g−1 can be reached. After 5 cycles, CMC-MMTs Gel still exhibits good removal performance indicating a good reusability and structural stability. The enhanced MB removal performance and improved structural stability might be due to 2D MMTs and the increased porosity. FTIR and XPS characterizations demonstrate that the adsorption mechanism of MB onto CMC-MMTs Gel might be attributed to electrostatic adsorption and ion-exchange between MB molecules and MMTs, and the interactions between MB molecules and the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of CMC.

Abstract:In order to improve the adsorption performance of MoS 2 , as well as to solve the problems of MoS 2 -powder in adsorption, which is prone to agglomeration and difficulty to be recycled, we prepared MoS 2 -nanoflowers(MoS 2 -NFs), and mixed them with sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol(SA/PVA) to prepare MoS 2 -NFs/SA/PVA xerogel(MSP) by freezing-lyophilization. Then two forms of xerogels - block-MSP(MSPB) and spherical-MSP(MSPS) were prepared, and they were used as methylene blue(MB) and Cu 2+ adsorbent. It was found that MoS 2 -NFs were evenly dispersed inside the SA/PVA with no agglomeration, while the interior of MSPB/MSPS showed the structure of parallel-pores and radial-pores, respectively. The adsorption capacity of MSPB/MSPS on MB can reach 233 mg/g, which is five times higher than SA/PVA-gel, showing excellent synergistic-adsorption effect, and the adsorption capacity for Cu 2+ reaches 271 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism indicated that the adsorption of MB by MSPB/MSPS conformed to pseudo-first-order model, with electrostatic force as the main force. And their adsorption of Cu 2+ conformed to pseudo-second-order model and was dominated by Lewis acid/base soft-soft interactions. Notably, after long-term adsorption, MSPB/MSPS maintains its shape and more than 90 % of the adsorption capacity, ensuring the recovery and reuse of materials. So, MSPB/MSPS has great potential in adsorption, providing a new solution for sewage purification.

Abstract:Ti3C2Tx MXene has attracted considerable interest as a new emerging two-dimensional material for environmental remediation due to its high adsorption capacity. However, its use is greatly limited by its poor mechanical properties, low processability and recyclability, and the low dispersity of such powder materials. In this work, a porous adsorbent (C–CMP) containing cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), Ti3C2Tx MXene and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was prepared by a simple and environmentally-friendly foaming method. Glutaraldehyde was used as crosslinker to improve the mechanical properties and boost the adsorption efficiency of methylene blue (MB) molecules. Fourier transform infrared (FT–IR), elemental analysis (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) further confirmed that the preparation of the C–CMP foam and cross-linking reaction were successful. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicated that the macropores were distributed homogeneously. The adsorption experiment showed that maximum adsorption capacity of MB can reach 239.92 mg·g−1 which was much higher than anionic dye (methyl orange, 45.25 mg·g−1). The adsorption behavior fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Based on FT–IR, EDX and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, the adsorption mechanism between C–CMP and MB molecules was attributed to electrostatic interaction.

Abstract:Adsorption method is an effective approach to treat wastewater containing methylene blue. Herein, a cost-effective and eco-friendly lignin-based network composite hydrogel adsorbent (PAA@SML) was constructed by using polyacrylic acid (PAA) to crosslink with sulfomethylated lignin (SML) via free radical polymerization for adsorption of methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The constructed exhibited remarkable adsorption performance towards removal of MB, with a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 777.1 mg·g −1 . The improved efficiency can be attributed to the well-established network structure and abundant hydrophilic functional groups present in the adsorbent, promoting the interaction between methylene blue (MB) molecules and the adsorption sites of the adsorbent. The adsorption process of the adsorbent for MB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models, which illustrated the adsorption process attributed to monolayer chemisorption. Mechanism investigation confirmed that the adsorption of MB by primarily relied on hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Moreover, the recyclability test demonstrated excellent regeneration usability and stability of , and the adsorption capacity maintained above 74.0 % after five cycles. This constructed lignin-based network composite hydrogel is considered to have great potential in the treatment of organic dye in wastewater.

Abstract:Physical adsorption is a common method to solve the contamination of methylene blue in dyeing wastewater. As a kind of adsorption material, cellulose aerogels with high porosity and surface areas have great potential application in methylene blue removal. However, the week hydrogen bonding between cellulose nanofibers making the cellulose aerogels with the poor mechanical properties and can be easily destroyed during adsorption. Hence, the preparation of cellulose aerogels with high mechanical strength is still a great challenge. Here, we report a robust super-assembly strategy to fabricate cellulose aerogels by combining cellulose nanofibers with PVA and M-K10. The resulting cellulose aerogels not only has a robust chemically cross-linked network, but also has strong H-bonds, which greatly enhance the mechanical properties. The resulting cellulose aerogels possess a low density of 19.32 mg/cm3. Furthermore, the cellulose aerogel shows 93% shape recovery under 60% strain (9.5 kPa under 60% strain) after 100 cycles, showing excellent mechanical property. The adsorption capacity of cellulose aerogel to methylene blue solution of 20 mg/L is 2.28 mg/g and the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms have also been studied. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model are more acceptable for indicating the adsorption process of methylene blue on the cellulose aerogel. Thus, this compressible and durable cellulose aerogel is a very prospective material for dyeing wastewater cleanup.
