Abstract:We report on four epochs of observations of the quasar PG 1211+143 using NuSTAR. The net exposure time is 300 ks. Prior work on this source found suggestive evidence of an ultra-fast outflow (UFO) in the Fe K band with a velocity of approximately 0.1 c ?> . The putative flow would carry away a high-mass flux and kinetic power, with broad implications for feedback and black hole--galaxy co-evolution. NuSTAR detects PG 1211+143 out to 30 keV, meaning that the continuum is well-defined both through and above the Fe K band. A characteristic relativistic disk reflection spectrum is clearly revealed via a broad Fe K emission line and Compton back-scattering curvature. The data offer only weak constraints on the spin of the black hole. A careful search for UFOs shows no significant absorption feature above 90% confidence. The limits are particularly tight when relativistic reflection is included. We discuss the statistics and the implications of these results in terms of connections between accretion onto quasars, Seyferts, and stellar-mass black holes, and feedback into their host environments.

Abstract:Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is released from endocrine L-cells lining the gut in response to food ingestion. However, GLP-1 is also produced in the nucleus of the solitary tract, where it acts as an anorectic neurotransmitter and key regulator of many autonomic and neuroendocrine functions. The expression and projections of GLP-1-producing neurons is highly conserved between rodent and primate brain, although a few key differences have been identified. The GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) has been mapped in the rodent brain, but no studies have described the distribution of GLP-1Rs in the nonhuman primate central nervous system. Here, we characterized the distribution of GLP-1R mRNA and protein in the adult macaque brain using in situ hybridization, radioligand receptor autoradiography, and immunohistochemistry with a primate specific GLP-1R antibody. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that the GLP-1R is localized to cell bodies and fiber terminals in a very selective distribution throughout the brain. Consistent with the functional role of the GLP-1R system, we find the highest concentration of GLP-1R-immunoreactivity present in select hypothalamic and brainstem regions that regulate feeding, including the paraventricular and arcuate hypothalamic nuclei, as well as the area postrema, nucleus of the solitary tract, and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus. Together, our data demonstrate that GLP-1R distribution is highly conserved between rodent and primate, although a few key species differences were identified, including the amygdala, where GLP-1R expression is much higher in primate than in rodent.

Abstract:Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are leading to global temperature increases, ocean acidification, and significant ecosystem impacts. Given current emissions trajectories, the IPCC's reports indicate that rapid abatement of CO 2 emissions and development of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategies are needed to address legacy and difficult-to-abate emissions sources. These CDR methods must efficiently and safely sequester gigatons of atmospheric CO 2 . Coastal enhanced weathering (CEW) via the addition of the common mineral olivine to coastal waters is one promising approach to enhance ocean alkalinity for large-scale CDR. As olivine weathers, it releases several biologically active dissolution products, including alkalinity, trace metals, and the nutrient silicate. Released trace metals can serve as micronutrients but may also be toxic at high concentrations to marine biota, including phytoplankton, which lie at the base of marine food webs. We grew six species representing several globally important phytoplankton species under elevated concentrations of olivine dissolution products via a synthetic olivine leachate (OL) based on olivine's elemental composition. We monitored their physiological and biogeochemical responses, which allowed us to determine physiological impacts and thresholds at elevated olivine leachate concentrations, in addition to individual effects of specific constituents. We found both positive and neutral responses but no evident toxic effects for two silicifying diatoms, a calcifying coccolithophore, and three cyanobacteria. In both single and competitive co-cultures, silicifiers and calcifiers benefited from olivine dissolution products like iron and silicate or enhanced alkalinity, respectively. The non-N 2 -fixing picocyanobacterium could use synthetic olivine-derived iron for growth, while N 2 -fixing cyanobacteria could not. However, other trace metals like nickel and cobalt supported cyanobacterial growth across both groups. Growth benefits to phytoplankton groups in situ will depend on species-specific responses and ambient concentrations of other required nutrients. Results suggest olivine dissolution products appear unlikely to cause negative physiological effects for any of the phytoplankton examined, even at high concentrations, and may support growth of particular taxa under some conditions. Future studies can shed light on long-term eco-evolutionary responses to olivine exposure and on the potential effects that marine microbes may in turn have on olivine dissolution rates and regional biogeochemistry.

Abstract:Spreading olivine powder in seawater to enhance alkalinity through weathering reactions has been proposed as a potential solution to control atmospheric CO 2 concentration. Attention has usually been paid to the chemical properties of seawater after the addition of olivine within lab and modeling studies. However, both microbial acclimation and evolution in such manipulated natural environments are often overlooked, yet they are of great importance for understanding the biological consequences of whether olivine addition is a feasible approach to mitigating climate change. In this study, an olivine addition experiment was conducted to investigate variation in bacterial diversity and community composition in the surface and bottom seawater of a representative marine ranch area in the Muping, Yantai. The results show that the composition of the particle-attached microbial community was particularly affected by the application of olivine. The relative abundance of biofilm-forming microbes in particle-attached fraction increased after the addition of olivine, while no significant variation in the free-living bacterial community was observed. Our study suggests that olivine addition would reshape the bacterial community structure, especially in particle-attached microenvironments. Therefore, the risk evaluation of alkalinity enhancement should be further studied before its large-scale application as a potential ocean geoengineering plan.

Abstract:Esterified fatty acid oils (EAOs) are obtained from esterification of vegetable acid oils with glycerol. These fat sources have the same fatty acid (FA) composition as their respective native oils but new chemical properties. Several studies have confirmed the potential of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) to reduce fat mass (FM) in humans and rodents. This study investigates the use of EAOs with different MCFA proportions on food preferences, digestibility and weight loss management in dogs. A basal diet was supplemented with 8% of three different fat sources: C0: soya bean-canola EAO, C20: soya bean-canola (80%) coconut (20%) EAO and C40: soya bean-canola (60%) coconut (40%) EAO. Food preference of these EAOs was tested using a two-pan preference test. Dogs presented a higher daily food intake of C20 and C40 compared to C0 (C20: 155 ± 18.6 g vs. C0: 17 ± 7.0 g, p < 0.001; C40: 117 ± 13.9 g vs. C0: 28 ± 10.5 g, p < 0.05 respectively). Also, the digestibility of the three experimental diets was tested. C20 and C40 showed higher ether extract, total FA and saturated FA digestibilities (p < 0.05) than C0 diet. Lastly, the three diets were investigated in a 14-week weight loss study, following 16 weeks of ad libitum feeding to induce overweight condition. Body weight (BW) reduction was lower (C0: 20.1 ± 2.32%, C20: 14.6 ± 1.43% and C40: 15.7 ± 1.23%, p < 0.05) and FM was higher (FM, 18.7 ± 3.42%, 27.9 ± 3.90% and 28.2 ± 2.88% for C0, C20 and C40, respectively, p < 0.05) for diets C20 and C40 than for C0. Feeding diets with MCFA at these inclusion levels to experimentally overweight dogs during 14 weeks do not result in faster weight loss compared to unsaturated long-chain FA.

Abstract:The spreading of crushed olivine-rich rocks in coastal seas to accelerate weathering reactions sequesters atmospheric CO2 and reduces atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Their weathering rates depend on different factors, including temperature and the reaction surface area. Therefore, this study investigates the variations in olivine-based enhanced weathering rates across 13 regional coasts worldwide. In addition, it assesses the CO2 sequestration within 100 years and evaluates the maximum net-sequestration potential based on varying environmental conditions. Simulations were conducted using the geochemical thermodynamic equilibrium modeling software PHREEQC. A sensitivity analysis was performed, exploring various combinations of influencing parameters, including grain size, seawater temperature, and chemistry. The findings reveal significant variation in CO2 sequestration, ranging from 0.13 to 0.94 metric tons (t) of CO2 per ton of distributed olivine-rich rocks over 100 years. Warmer coastal regions exhibit higher CO2 sequestration capacities than temperate regions, with a difference of 0.4 t CO2/ t olivine distributed. Sensitivity analysis shows that smaller grain sizes (10 μm) exhibit higher net CO2 sequestration rates (0.87 t/t) in olivine-based enhanced weathering across all conditions, attributed to their larger reactive surface area. However, in warmer seawater temperatures, olivine with slightly larger grain sizes (50 and 100 μm) displays still larger net CO2 removal rates (0.97 and 0.92 t/t), optimizing the efficiency of CO2 sequestration while reducing grinding energy requirements. While relying on a simplified sensitivity analysis that does not capture the full complexity of real-world environmental dynamics, this study contributes to understanding the variability and optimization of enhanced weathering for CO2 sequestration, supporting its potential as a sustainable CO2 removal strategy.

Potential of CO2 sequestration by olivine addition in offshore waters: A ship-based deck incubation experiment

Abstract:Ocean alkalinity enhancement is considered as an effective atmospheric CO2 removal approach, but currently, little is known about the carbon sequestration potential of implementing olivine addition in offshore waters. We investigated the effect of olivine addition on the seawater carbonate system by carrying out a deck incubation experiment in the Northern Yellow Sea; the dissolution rate of olivine was calculated based on the increase in seawater alkalinity (TA), and the CO2 sequestration potential was evaluated. The results showed that the dissolution of olivine increased seawater TA and decreased partial pressure of CO2, resulting in oceanic CO2 uptake from the atmosphere through sea-air exchange; it also increased seawater pH and mitigated ocean acidification to a certain extent. The addition of 1 ‰ olivine had a more significant effect on the seawater carbonate system than 0.5 ‰ olivine addition. The average dissolution rate constant of olivine was 1.44 ± 0.15 μmol m-2 d-1. Assuming that olivine settles completely on the seabed due to gravity, the theoretically maximum amount of CO2 removed by applying 1 tonne of olivine per square meter area in the Northern Yellow Sea is only 2.0 × 10-4 t/m2. Therefore, when olivine addition is implemented in the offshore waters, it is necessary to consider reducing the olivine size, prolonging the settling time of olivine in the water column; and spreading olivine in well-mixed waters to prolong the residence time through repeated resuspension, thus increasing its potential in carbon sequestration.
Influence of ocean alkalinity enhancement with olivine or steel slag on a coastal plankton community in Tasmania

Abstract:Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) aims to increase atmospheric CO 2 sequestration in the oceans through the acceleration of chemical rock weathering. This could be achieved by grinding rocks containing alkaline minerals and adding the rock powder to the surface ocean where it dissolves and chemically locks CO 2 in seawater as bicarbonate. However, CO 2 sequestration during dissolution coincides with the release of potentially bioactive chemicals and may induce side effects. Here, we used 53 L microcosms to test how coastal plankton communities from Tasmania respond to OAE with olivine (mainly Mg 2 SiO 4 ) or steel slag (mainly CaO and Ca(OH) 2 ) as alkalinity sources. Three microcosms were left unperturbed and served as a control, three were enriched with olivine powder (1.9 g L −1 ), and three were enriched with steel slag powder (0.038 g L −1 ). Olivine and steel slag powders were of similar grain size. Olivine was added in a higher amount than the steel slag with the aim of compensating for the lower efficiency of olivine to deliver alkalinity over the 3-week experiment. Phytoplankton and zooplankton community responses as well as some biogeochemical parameters were monitored. Olivine and steel slag additions increased total alkalinity by 29 and 361 μ mol kg −1 , respectively, corresponding to a respective theoretical increase of 0.9 % and 14.8 % of the seawater storage capacity for atmospheric CO 2 . Olivine and steel slag released silicate nutrients into the seawater, but steel slag released considerably more and also significant amounts of phosphate. After 21 d, no significant difference was found in dissolved iron concentrations ( >100 nmol L −1 ) in the treatments and the control. The slag addition increased dissolved manganese concentrations (771 nmol L −1 ), while olivine increased dissolved nickel concentrations (37 nmol L −1 ). There was no significant difference in total chlorophyll- a concentrations between the treatments and the control, likely due to nitrogen limitation of the phytoplankton community. However, flow cytometry results indicated an increase in the cellular abundance of several smaller ( ∼<20 μ m) phytoplankton groups in the olivine treatment. The abundance of larger phytoplankton ( ∼>20 μ m) decreased much more in the control than in the treatments after day 10. Furthermore, the maximum quantum yields of photosystem II ( Fv/Fm ) were higher in slag and olivine treatments, suggesting that mineral additions increased photosynthetic performance. The zooplankton community composition was also affected, with the most notable changes being observed in the dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans and the appendicularian Oikopleura sp. in the olivine treatment. Overall, the steel slag used here was more efficient for CO 2 removal with OAE than the olivine over the 3-week timescale of the experiment. Furthermore, the steel slag appeared to induce less change in the plankton community than the olivine when comparing the CO 2 removal potential of both minerals with the level of environmental impact that they caused.

Abstract:Ocean alkalinity enhancement, one of the ocean-based CO 2 removal techniques, has the potential to assist us in achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. Olivine is considered the most promising mineral for ocean alkalinization enhancement due to its theoretically high CO 2 sequestration efficiency. Olivine dissolution has been predicted to alter marine phytoplankton communities, however, there is still a lack of experimental evidence. The olivine dissolution process in seawater can be influenced by a range of factors, including biotic factors, which have yet to be explored. In this study, we cultivated two diatoms and one coccolithophore with and without olivine particles to investigate their interactions with olivine dissolution. Our findings demonstrate that olivine dissolution promoted the growth of all phytoplankton species, with the highly silicified diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana benefiting the most. This was probably due to the highly silicified diatom having a higher silicate requirement and, therefore, growing more quickly when silicate was released during olivine dissolution. Based on the structural characteristics and chemical compositions on the exterior surface of olivine particles, T. pseudonana was found to promote olivine dissolution by inhibiting the formation of the amorphous SiO 2 layer on the surface of olivine and therefore enhancing the stoichiometric dissolution of olivine. However, the positive effects of T. pseudonana on olivine dissolution were not observed in the coccolithophore Gephyrocapsa oceanica or the non-silicate obligate diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum . This study provides the first experimental evidence of the interaction between phytoplankton and olivine dissolution, which has important implications for ocean alkalinization research.

Life Cycle Assessment of Coastal Enhanced Weathering for Carbon Dioxide Removal from Air

Abstract:Coastal enhanced weathering (CEW) is a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approach whereby crushed silicate minerals are spread in coastal zones to be naturally weathered by waves and tidal currents, releasing alkalinity and removing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). Olivine has been proposed as a candidate mineral due to its abundance and high CO2 uptake potential. A life cycle assessment (LCA) of silt-sized (10 μm) olivine revealed that CEW's life-cycle carbon emissions and total environmental footprint, i.e., carbon and environmental penalty, amount to around 51 kg CO2eq and 3.2 Ecopoint (Pt) units per tonne of captured atmospheric CO2, respectively, and these will be recaptured within a few months. Smaller particle sizes dissolve and uptake atmospheric CO2 even faster; however, their high carbon and environmental footprints (e.g., 223 kg CO2eq and 10.6 Pt tCO2-1, respectively, for 1 μm olivine), engineering challenges in comminution and transportation, and possible environmental stresses (e.g., airborne and/or silt pollution) might restrict their applicability. Alternatively, larger particle sizes exhibit lower footprints (e.g., 14.2 kg CO2eq tCO2-1 and 1.6 Pt tCO2-1, respectively, for 1000 μm olivine) and could be incorporated in coastal zone management schemes, thus possibly crediting CEW with avoided emissions. However, they dissolve much slower, requiring 5 and 37 years before the 1000 μm olivine becomes carbon and environmental net negative, respectively. The differences between the carbon and environmental penalties highlight the need for using multi-issue life cycle impact assessment methods rather than focusing on carbon balances alone. When CEW's full environmental profile was considered, it was identified that fossil fuel-dependent electricity for olivine comminution is the main environmental hotspot, followed by nickel releases, which may have a large impact on marine ecotoxicity. Results were also sensitive to transportation means and distance. Renewable energy and low-nickel olivine can minimize CEW's carbon and environmental profile.
CO2 Removal With Enhanced Weathering and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement: Potential Risks and Co-benefits for Marine Pelagic Ecosystems

Abstract:Humankind will need to remove hundreds of gigatons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere by the end of the twenty-first century to keep global warming below 2°C within the constraints of the global carbon budget. However, so far it is unclear if and how this could be achieved. A widely recognized idea is to accelerate weathering reactions of minerals that consume CO2 when they dissolve. Acceleration could be realized by pulverizing and distributing gigatons of these minerals onto land (termed “enhanced weathering (EW)”) or sea (termed “ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE)”) thereby largely increasing their reactive surfaces. However, the desired consumption of atmospheric CO2 during dissolution would inevitably be accompanied by a release of mineral dissolution products (alkalinity, Si, Ca, Mg, Fe, Ni, and maybe others). Here, we approximate their maximum additions to assess potential consequences for pelagic communities (mainly primary producers) and the biogeochemical fluxes they control. Based on this assessment, we tentatively qualify the potential to induce positive and/or negative side effects to be high for Fe, Ni, Si, intermediate for alkalinity, and low for Ca and Mg. However, perturbation potentials are always higher at perturbation hotspots and would be different for EW than for OAE. Furthermore, ecological/biogeochemical consequences of EW/OAE largely depend on the minerals used. We hypothesize that mainly calcifiers would profit in a scheme where CaCO3 derivatives would be used due to beneficial changes in carbonate chemistry. Figuratively, this may turn the blue ocean into a white(r) ocean. When using silicates, the release of additional Si, Fe and Ni could benefit silicifiers and N2-fixers (cyanobacteria) and increase ocean productivity ultimately turning the blue ocean into a green(er) ocean. These considerations call for dedicated research to assess risks and co-benefits of mineral dissolution products on marine and other environments. Indeed, both EW and OAE could become important tools to realize CO2 removal at the planetary scale but associated risks and/or co-benefits should be revealed before deciding on their implementation.

Abstract:Technological development using graphene oxide (GO) has increased in the last years, leading to the release of this contaminant to final sinks, such as estuaries. Due to their potential to flocculate and deposit when interacting with high ionic strength media, GO poses a threat, especially to benthic organisms like polychaetes. In addition to chemical contamination, estuaries also face a severe threat from invasive species, which can cause irreversible damage to ecosystems. The combination of abiotic and biotic stressors may work together on native species, decreasing their resilience. Thus, this study aims to assess the effects of an abiotic stressor, GO nanosheets (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 mg GO/Kg dw) on Hediste diversicolor (native species) and Arenicola marina (invasive species) through several behavioral assays and biochemical markers. The impact of invasive species A. marina (biotic factor) on H. diversicolor avoidance behavior was also evaluated. Obtained results demonstrated that H. diversicolor fled from lower GO contamination compartments to higher ones and that exposure to increased GO concentrations negatively impacted its burrowing activity. They were unable to escape from higher contamination compartments, but at the highest concentrations, the bioturbation activity was significantly higher, which may indicate that H. diversicolor tended to dwell deeper in the sediment. A. marina showed an escape behavior from compartments with higher GO concentrations. Additionally, this species' bioturbation activity significantly decreased when exposed to GO. Moreover, avoidance tests demonstrated that the presence of A. marina affected the behavior of H. diversicolor . Regarding oxidative stress, H. diversicolor seems to be more impacted than A. marina , since Lipid peroxidation levels were higher in all GO concentrations and Superoxide dismutase activity significantly increased in the lowest GO levels. Overall, H. diversicolor spatial distribution may be severely constrained under abiotic and biotic stress, while A. marina' s higher foraging activity may promote its propagation in the estuary. Behavioral tests, combined with biochemical markers have shown to be relevant tools for the development of more environmental-realistic assessment and monitoring frameworks for estuaries.

Abstract:It is increasingly apparent that adequately mitigating anthropogenic climate interference will require ocean carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategies. Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is an abiotic ocean CDR approach that aims to increase the ocean's CO 2 uptake capacity through the dispersal of pulverized mineral or dissolved alkali into the surface ocean. However, OAE's effect on marine biota is largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the impacts of moderate (~700 μmol kg −1 ) and high (~2700 μmol kg −1 ) limestone-inspired alkalinity additions on two biogeochemically and ecologically important phytoplankton functional group representatives: Emiliania huxleyi (calcium carbonate producer) and Chaetoceros sp. (silica producer). The growth rate and elemental ratios of both taxa showed a neutral response to limestone-inspired alkalinization. While our results are encouraging, we also observed abiotic mineral precipitation, which removed nutrients and alkalinity from solution. Our findings offer an evaluation of biogeochemical and physiological responses to OAE and provide evidence supporting the need for continued research into how OAE strategies affect marine ecosystems.

Co2-Induced Small Water Solubility in Olivine and Implications for Properties of the Shallow Mantle

Abstract:H2O and CO2 are important components of fluids in the mantle at similar to 30-150 km depth, and may affect strongly water dissolution in nominally anhydrous olivine; however, available experimental hydrogenation of olivine has been nearly exclusively carried out in coexistence with H2O (CO2-free). In this study, the effect of CO2 on water solubility in olivine has been investigated by H-annealing natural olivine under peridotite- and fluid-saturated conditions. Experiments were conducted at 1.5-5 GPa and 1100-1300 degrees C, with oxygen fugacity controlled by Ni-NiO and with either H2O or H2O-CO2 as buffering fluid. The olivine shows no change in composition during the experiments. The infrared spectra of the hydrated olivine are characterized by prominent OH bands from similar to 3650 to 3000 cm(-1) in all the runs, at both high frequency (>3450 cm(-1)) and low frequency (<3450 cm(-1)), and the H2O solubility is similar to 120-370 ppm for the olivine in coexisting with H2O, and similar to 65-180 ppm for the olivine in coexisting with H2O-CO2. When CO2 is present in the buffering fluid, the H2O solubility of olivine is reduced by a factor of similar to 2, due to effect on the partitioning of water between minerals and coexisting fluid, and the measured H2O solubility shows independence on fluid composition (the molar ratio of CO2 to CO2 + H2O at similar to 0.2-0.5) given pressure, temperature and oxygen fugacity. Olivine equilibrated in the shallow mantle is probably dominated by OH groups in the wavenumber similar to 3650-3000 cm(-1), and the intensity of OH bands at low frequency may be higher than or comparable to those at higher frequencies. The storage capacity of water in the shallow mantle in previous estimates may have been overestimated by a factor of at least similar to 4 if the observed effect of CO2 on water solubility is correct. Our results have profound influence on understanding partial melting, electrical conductivity anomalies and metasomatism in the shallow mantle. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
The Availability of Limestone and Other Raw Materials for Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement

Abstract:The work assesses the availability and localizations of different raw materials suitable for alkalinization enhancement (OAE), like limestone, olivine, magnesite and brucite, since several billion tons of rocky materials are needed to achieve meaningful results for carbon sequestration through OAE. Resources of carbonates are immense and widespread around all continents. Availability of pure carbonates is still very large (outcrop area 4.1 million km2) and is not a constraint for the large‐scale development of OAE. Outcrops of pure carbonates within 10 km from the coastline and below bare ground or scrub/shrub, preferred for the logistics of exploitation, account for about 70,000 km2, and could provide about 5.000 Gt of limestone. These values increase by a factor of 3 and 8 within 50 and 100 km from the coastline, respectively. Potential resources of olivine, less easily identifiable from the geological data, are estimated in the order of a few hundred billion tons and could provide only a minor contribution to ocean‐based carbon removal strategies. A comparison with the current level of world extraction of mineral raw materials is also provided. The annual production of limestone, estimated to be more than 6.6 Gt from deposits scattered all around the world, is about 9% of the world production of mineral raw materials (around 44 Gt y‐1), and is of the same order of magnitude as coal (7.3 Gt y‐1). The annual productions of magnesite (29 Mt y‐1), olivine (8.4 Mt y‐1) and brucite (1.5 Mt y‐1) are two orders of magnitude lower.

Investigating the effect of silicate- and calcium-based ocean alkalinity enhancement on diatom silicification

Abstract:Gigatonne-scale atmospheric carbon dioxide removal (CDR) will almost certainly be needed to supplement the emission reductions required to keep global warming between 1.5–2 °C . Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is an emerging marine CDR method with the addition of pulverised minerals to the surface ocean being one widely considered approach. A concern of this approach is the potential for dissolution products released from minerals to impact phytoplankton communities. We conducted an experiment with 10 pelagic mesocosms (M1–M10) in Raunefjorden, Bergen, Norway, to assess the implications of simulated silicate- and calcium-based mineral OAE on a coastal plankton community. Five mesocosms (M1, M3, M5, M7, and M9) were enriched with silicate ( ∼ 75 μ mol L −1 Na 2 SiO 3 ), alkalinity along a gradient from 0 to ∼ 600 μ mol kg −1 , and magnesium in proportion to alkalinity additions. The other five mesocosms (M2, M4, M6, M8, M10) were enriched with alkalinity along the same gradient and calcium in proportion to alkalinity additions. The experiment explored many components of the plankton community, from microbes to fish larvae, and here we report on the influence of simulated mineral based OAE on diatom silicification. Macronutrients (nitrate and phosphate) limited silicification at the onset of the experiment until nutrient additions on day 26. Silicification was significantly greater in the silicate-based mineral treatment, with all genera except Cylindrotheca displaying an increase in silicification as a result of the increased concentration of dissolved silicate. In contrast to the effect of differences in dissolved silicate concentrations between the two mineral treatments, increases in alkalinity only influenced the silicification of two genera, Pseudo-nitzschia and Nitzschia . The four other genera ( Arcocellulus , Cylindrotheca , Skeletonema , and Thalassiosira ) investigated here displayed no significant changes in silicification as a result of alkalinity increases between 0 and 600 μ mol kg −1 above natural levels. In summary, our findings illustrate that the enhancement of alkalinity via simulated silicate- and calcium-based methods has limited genus-specific impacts on the silicification of diatoms. This research underscores the importance of understanding the full breadth of different OAE approaches, their risks, co-benefits, and potential for interactive effects.

Abstract:Calcium oxide (CaO) is being considered as a possible treatment for both the control of echinoderm populations and the treatment against sea lice infestation in Norwegian salmon farms. CaO particles produce an exothermal reaction when in contact with water, which can cause epidermal burns and lesions to certain target organisms leading to death. The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of fine (<0.8 mm) and coarse (<2.5 mm) CaO particles to a range of marine species from different taxonomic groups: two echinoderms (Asterias ruben and Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis); two crustaceans (Carcinus maenas and Tisbe battagliai); two molluscs (Mytilus edulis and Hinia reticulata); a polychaete (Nereis pelagica); a fish (Cyclopterus sp.); and seaweed germlings (Fucus vesiculosus). Overall, the fine CaO particles were more toxic to the selected marine species than the coarse particles. Coarse CaO particle effects were only observed in four of the nine species tested (A. rubens, S. droebachiensis, N. pelagica, T. battagliai) with similar LC50 values between 207 and 268 g/m2. For the fine CaO particles, the lowest LC50 was for the epibenthic copepod (T. battagliai) at 3.14 g/m2, followed by the sea urchin (20.1 g/m2), starfish (22.2 g/m2), ragworm (29.6 g/m2), and netted dog whelk (41.9 g/m2). Lump sucker fish exhibited significant mortalities only at the highest fine CaO concentration tested (320 g/m2) and recorded an LC50 of 226 g/m2. The toxicity data were used to generate species sensitivity distributions (SSDs) for both fine and coarse CaO particles. The hazard concentrations for 5% of the species (HC5) calculated from the SSDs, based on NOEC values, for the coarse and fine particles were 35.5 and 1.5 g/m2 respectively. Using a recommended assessment factor of 5, the Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNEC) was calculated as 7.1 and 0.3 g/m2 for coarse and fine CaO particles respectively.
Influence of alkaline earth metal ions upon the dissolution and carbon storage of olivine containing associated kaolinite

Abstract:Olivine dissolution applications in coastal environments hold great promise for both ocean alkalinity enhancement and carbon dioxide storage. Yet the dissolution mechanism of olivine and the influence of metal ions, such as Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ , remain unclear. Moreover, the weathering products, such as clay minerals are usually mixed with olivine, and the influence of the associated minerals on the dissolution also unexplored. In this study, an 80-day dissolution experiment was performed in Ca 2+ -free artificial seawater (ASW-Ca) and ASW lacking both Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ (ASW-CaMg), to elucidate the mechanism of olivine dissolution and the impact of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ on the presence of an associated clay mineral, kaolinite. To evaluate the mineral properties before and after dissolution, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses were used. Etch pits were observed on olivine's surface as well as its reduced crystallinity. The atomic ratio of Mg/Si in olivine decreased from 1.49 ± 0.56 in the raw samples to 1.29 ± 0.53 in the samples obtained from ASW-CaMg after undergoing the 80-day dissolution, whereas it was much higher, at 1.85 ± 0.32, in the samples from ASW-Ca. The increasing Mg/Si was attributed to the Mg 2+ adsorption on the surface of olivine, which inhibited the release of structural Mg 2+ . Hence, Mg 2+ was a key environmental factor influencing the process of olivine dissolution, and estuaries, which have low Mg 2+ content and low pH may be the promising areas for the olivine application. Moreover, in ASW-CaMg, the total alkalinity (TA), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration, and charge concentration of alkaline earth metal ions increased by 3392 ± 28, 2922 ± 3, and 3740 ± 91 μmol kg −1 , respectively, compared to the data from the blank experiment. Notably, TA and DIC had strong linear relationships with the alkaline earth metal ions (Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ ). The release of free alkaline earth metal cations during olivine dissolution was a controlling factor for long-term carbon dioxide storage in ASW-CaMg. Finally, during the 80-day dissolution experiment, no dissolution of the associated kaolinite was observed, however, kaolinite may influence the olivine dissolution by adsorbing the released Si.
