Abstract:Diplomatic speech acts, to some extent, constitute and shape the national image, maintain international relations, and promote world harmony. Under the framework of Speech Act Theory, based on a corpus, this study analyzes the types and linguistic powerfulness of directive speech acts in statements made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokespersons in the past five years with a view to exploring the motivations behind their diplomatic directive speech acts and the relationship between discourse and power behind the speech. The findings indicate that Chinese diplomatic spokespersons tend to choose speech acts that blur the power and authority of both sides of the discourse and indicate weak directives. With the understanding that the wording of Chinese diplomatic speeches is indicative of the ideology and value orientation in the context of Chinese society, the findings of this study enrich the analysis of diplomatic discourse and the diplomatic framework and throw light on the motivations behind the wording of countries’ diplomatic speeches.
A corpus-based analysis of the stylistic features of Chinese and American diplomatic discourse

Abstract:The study investigates the linguistic aspects of Chinese and American diplomatic discourse using Biber's theoretical underpinnings of multi-dimensional (MD) analysis. The corpus of the study comprises texts taken from the official websites of the Chinese and US governments from 2011 to 2020. The study results show that China's diplomatic discourse falls into the text type of learned exposition which includes informational expositions focused on conveying information. In contrast, the United States diplomatic discourse falls into the text type of "involved persuasion," which is persuasive and argumentative. Furthermore, the two-way ANOVA test reveals few distinctions between spoken and written diplomatic discourse from the same country. Furthermore, T-tests demonstrate that the diplomatic discourse of the two countries differs significantly in three dimensions. In addition, the study highlights that China's diplomatic discourse is informationally dense and context independent. In contrast, the United States diplomatic discourse is emotive and interactional, strongly dependent on context, and created within time restrictions. Finally, the study's findings contribute to a systematic knowledge of the genre aspects of diplomatic discourse and are helpful for more effective diplomatic discourse system creation.

Abstract:The Belt and Road Initiative has opened new windows of opportunity and is of far-reaching significance. The speeches of President Xi Jinping at the two Belt and Road Forums for International Cooperation were crucial in demonstrating China's attitude. Thematic progression theory are very important for discourse analysis. Most existing studies analyze important speeches of President Xi from the perspectives of political science, sociology and translation studies, but few scholars conduct discourse analysis on them. Therefore, this paper takes Zhu Yongsheng's thematic progression theory as the theoretical framework, selects two keynote speeches that President Xi delivered at the opening ceremony of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation as the corpus, and uses quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyze the themes and thematic progression patterns in the selected corpus. Through the analysis, this study finds out what TP patterns are used in the important speeches of President Xi Jinping, how many percentages of TP patterns are in those important speeches, and how those TP patterns realize their social functions. Especially, the use of the pronoun we as the constant theme, is an exquisite design of the discourse. It realizes its own social functions.
A Corpus-Based Discourse Analysis of Chinese Leaders' Speeches at “Sino-Asean” Summits

Abstract:Taking the Chinese top leaders' speeches during the Sino-ASEAN Summit as example, a corpus-based study from the perspective of critical discourse analysis is carried out to explore how the national identity is discursively constructed in their speeches and to show the interactive relationship between discourse and national identity construction. The analysis reveals: Chinese top leaders, through selections and collaborative uses of different types of vocabulary, construct a national image and national identity —— "collaborators"; critical discourse analysis can be conducted as a useful tool to uncover the hidden relationship between discourse practice(speeches) and social practice(national identity construction).

Abstract:Since its inception, modern Chinese political discourse has been heavily influenced by traditional cultural thought, Confucianism’s idea of a people-oriented and benevolent government; the Taoist idea of atheism and the Taoist law of nature; the legist idea of governance by law, etc. These concepts have a very profound influence on the language of political discourse in the new period. The political discourses of various periods and dynasties in antiquity had an equally important influence on the political language of the new period leader Xi Jinping. Ancient Chinese precedent texts are an important object of study in Chinese modern linguistics, because they are related to the system of Chinese civilization and reflect the specifics of the interaction of language, thought and traditional culture. The presence of ancient Chinese precedent texts characterizes Chinese traditional linguocultures, representing different perceptions of existing values and ways of perceiving the picture of the world. The presence of ancient Chinese precedent texts is a prerequisite for successful speech in Chinese political discourse. The semantic and contextual analysis of congratulatory speeches in the structure of Xi Jinping’s discourse shows the role of precedent texts from 礼记 (“Book of Rituals”), 周易 (“Zhou Yi”), 道德经 (“Dao De Jing”), which not only function as tools of persuasion and motivation for the recipients to rally, but also development of traditional Chinese culture.
A Study on Fuzzy Words in Chinese Diplomatic Discourse

Abstract:This paper discusses the use of time-fuzzy words and frequency-fuzzy words in President Xi Jinping’s diplomatic speeches, and analyzes the fuzziness of the words “long-term” and “continuous”, which are frequently used in the time-fuzzy words and frequency-fuzzy words. Meanwhile, it discusses the pragmatic function of these two words based on specific corpus of diplomatic speeches. According to the study, it is found that the use of fuzzy words in diplomatic speech is typical and representative, which is of vital importance to the writing of political-style writing and political communication. In political language writing, the pragmatic function of fuzzy words cannot be replaced by precise words. However, the use of fuzzy words requires certain rules and regulations, such as grasping the ambiguity degree of fuzzy words and combining fuzzy words with precise words. Otherwise, the political discourse will look like stereotyped and rigid, resulting in a negative impact of fake and inane political discourse language.

Abstract:Politics is a genre of language, and language is the manifestation of politics (Mazrui, 2008). Political discourse not only plays an important role in the process of national external communication but also conveys certain ideology and political intentions. Based on interpersonal function in Systemic Functional Grammar and using President Xi’s speech at the Extraordinary G20 Leaders’ Summit as the original data, this paper analyzes and explores how this speech can achieve discourse function through personal pronouns, mood, and modality. In addition, this paper reveals how various linguistic resources are used to realize interpersonal meaning in political discourse.

Abstract:The research attempts to analyze two political discourses delivered respectively by American president Donald Trump and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi in the 72nd session of UN assembly. With Fairclough’s 3-Dimensional Discourse Model as the analytical framework, we make an investigation into the two political discourses so as to gain insights into the interplay of discourse, ideology and society, by examining linguistic characteristics of text, discursive and social practice dimensions. On the first dimension of text, we find that both leaders prefer Judgment resources to the other two resources within the Affect System in their remarks, by resorting to the new advancement in Systemic Functional Grammar—Martin’s Attitude subsystem under his Appraisal framework, and closely examining the interpersonal metafunctions, coupled with statistical measures. Within the Judgment subsystem, there exist significant differences between the two speeches in terms of Tenacity+ resources. On the dimension of discursive practice, our research reveals that both leaders use a great number of intertextuality resources in the remarks. Besides, both leaders have a preference to the sub-category of “The Original Producer of Discourse being the Speaker’s Compatriots” under the category of “Intertextuality”. That is, Wang Yi has a preference for the lines of Chinese sages in the Antiquity, whereas Trump is fond of using intertextuality resources from a diversity of domains, such as laws and statues, legal texts and documents of governments. Lastly, we develop an understanding of roles played by “American First” ideology and Chinese government’s national interest in today’s political arena through analyzing technologizing means of discourses.

Abstract:This article analyzes how president Xi Jinping’s political discourse legitimizes the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) as China’s ruling Party through representations of political ideologies. It probes two dimensions of the representations: thematic representations concerning the topics and topical patterns in Xi’s discourse, and evaluative representations concerning the attitudes and emotions associated with these topics. This study adapts Fairclough’s three-dimensional approaches to Chinese political discourse analysis: description regarding the linguistic features of the discourse, interpretation and explanation of the discourse by considering China’s social, especially political and cultural, particularities. Through the analysis, this article reveals the discursive practice through which the CCP utilizes a range of political ideologies to legitimize its politics. It is hoped that this study can shed light on adapting critical discourse analysis (CDA) to Chinese political discourse analysis in the context of China’s particular culture and politics.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the peculiarities of Chinese diplomacy at the present stage of China's development. The purpose of the proposed study is to determine the features of "great power diplomacy with Chinese specifics in the new era." The purpose of this work - to examine the peculiarities of Xi Jinping-era diplomacy, to clarify the degree of their continuity with respect to previous diplomatic strategies of China, as well as to interpret the modern diplomatic strategy of "great power diplomacy with Chinese specifics" as a consequence of the growing power of China challenging the hegemony of the United States. The theoretical and methodological basis of the research is based on the theory of structural realism and the theory of the transit of power, which allow us to study the influence of Chinese diplomacy as a derivative of China's increasing role in global governance on the process of structuring both the regional subsystem and the global system of international relations. The relevance of this study is associated with a change in the tactics of Chinese diplomacy towards a more focused and tougher rhetoric, emphasizing intransigence with baseless attacks by Western countries and manipulations with the vulnerability of indigenous Chinese interests. In the study, the authors note that throughout the period under review, pragmatism and an orientation towards modernization and strengthening of the country remained the invariable principle of Chinese diplomacy. Xi Jinping proclaimed a course for the "revival of the Chinese nation," which met with resistance from the countries of the "Collective West." The authors' scientifically significant contribution to the study of the peculiarities of the diplomatic practice of the People's Republic of China in the context of the implementation of the "diplomacy of a great power with Chinese specifics in a new era" is to assess the degree of compliance of this course with the need to defend China's fundamental national interests in a complicated international situation. The article emphasizes that "the diplomacy of a great power with Chinese specifics" allows China to demonstrate the behavior of a great power and at the same time change the balance of forces in the "international struggle for public opinion."
A Semantic Analysis of the Notion of Consultative Democracy: Xieshang Minzhu (协商民主) in the Chinese Official Political Discourses

Abstract:Abstract Chinese politics are characterized by the complex issues of a large population and centralized political powers, which offers a distinct political model from the Western models. However, the last two decades have witnessed a sharp collision between Chinese and Western political thinking. In response, domestic authors have increasingly focused on the indigenization (bentuhua 本土化) of Chinese political theories and, therefore, defend the concept of politics with Chinese characteristics. In this article, the authors focus on the discourse of “deliberative democracy” within the Chinese language, namely, Xieshang minzhu 协商民主. In the current literature, almost no scholarly discussions have explored the semantics of the notion of Xieshang minzhu within Chinese politics. This article engages with this issue, both as a subject and a methodology, to better understand the political language that has been used in the official discourses in China Official propaganda mainly includes five of China’s most authoritative official media (newspapers): People’s Daily (Renmin ribao 人民日报), Guangming Daily (Guangming ribao 光明日报), Xinhua Daily(Xinhua ribao 新华日报), China Comment (Banyutan 半月谈), Qiushi (Qiushi 求是, formerly known as Red Flag (Hongqi 红旗)), Xi Jinping’s series of important speech databases and official documents on the subject of Xieshang or Xieshang minzhu in the Party-Building Database. by 1) establishing a textual corpus by collecting relevant data into the Chinese and English groups through keywords; 2) conducting a statistical analysis based on the Word Cloud and Diagram analyses; and 3) using Word2Vec to calculate the relationship among other sub-keywords. The purpose of this contribution is to differentiate Xieshang minzhu as adopted by Chinese official discourses embedded in the logic of political reforms from the Western discourses. The semantic analysis presented here also serves as a methodology that systematically develops a conceptual model of xieshang , which further clarifies the misconceptions and errors in the existing literature. The authors also provide an outline of the polysemic notion of deliberative democracy, which not only exists within an authoritarian regime but is also present in other forms and other languages (such as Chinese). This serves to further maintain the legitimacy of the “socialist democracy with Chinese characteristics .”

Abstract:The purpose of the research. The article examines the current state of public diplomacy research in China. The subject, object, method and purpose of public diplomacy are analyzed. As a resource of national soft power, culture is an important means of implementing public diplomacy. In the article, we analyze the specific Chinese practice of implementing public diplomacy from the point of view of cultural public diplomacy. Results. As a result of the conducted research, the author comes to the conclusion that the status of public diplomacy in Chinese national diplomacy has increased rapidly. First, with regard to the current state of research, in recent years, the research of Chinese scientists in the field of public diplomacy has focused more on applied research than on theoretical ones, such as the role of public diplomacy in shaping the country’s image and strengthening its soft power. Secondly, with regard to the definition of public diplomacy, Chinese scientists hold different views on the subject, object and method of public diplomacy, but on the purpose of public diplomacy, Chinese scientists believe that public diplomacy, like other types of traditional diplomacy, is aimed at protecting and strengthening national interests. Thirdly, humanitarian exchanges have always been an important part of Xi Jinping’s socialist diplomatic thought with Chinese specifics in the new era and an important pillar of Chinese diplomacy. China has enriched Chinese public diplomacy with the opening of Confucius institutes, exchanges, large-scale cultural events and large-scale sports events, promoted the popularization of Chinese culture, strengthened mutual understanding and cooperation with the peoples of other countries and achieved good results.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the development of the modern foreign policy course of the Chinese leader Xi Jinping – Diplomacy of the Great Power with Chinese characteristics. The fifth generation of Chinese lead- ers made a concept shift in foreign policy of the People’s Republic of China. The author studies main and most remarkable Chinese diplomatic concepts investigated in the new era: concepts Diplomacy of the Great Power with Chinese characteristics, New type of great powers relations, One Belt One Road initiative, Community of shared future for mankind. The purpose of our study is to understand, to comprehend which of the key concepts under study, which is the financial support for the practical implementation of in- frastructure projects; how Chinese political leadership implements them for global governance and promoting their interests in Eurasia, Latin America, Africa, and others continents. The leading approach to the study of the is- sue is determined by the ideology of “Non-West”, or non-Western theories of international relations, the National Chinese School in particular. The comparative method allows establishing the general and specific in the main theories of Chinese foreign policy from the beginning of the 21 st century till up to the present. The article identifies and defines the basic features and differences in the content of those theories. As an example, the issue of the content of the term New type of relationship in the modern Chinese foreign policy discourse is considered. It becomes obvious that Xi Jinping, by realizing the diplomacy of the great power and calling his people to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation ( 中华民族伟大复兴 ), expands its influence throughout the world. That is not just a foreign policy discourse. China is becoming more active in building a dialogue with its closest neighbors in Asia, as well as establishing new institutions as an alternative to the Western-led global architecture, to assert its ascendancy and political, economic, cultural power.
Exploring Metaphorical Representations of Law and Order in China’s Government Work Reports: A Corpus-based Diachronic Analysis of Legal Metaphors

Abstract:The present study has conducted a diachronic analysis of law and order metaphors in a self-compiled corpus of China's Government Work Reports (CGWR) over a span of 22 years (2000-2021). By mapping target domains with source domains, we categorized four major types of legal metaphors, including building, physical object, journey, and living being, among which physical object was overwhelmingly predominant. Our analysis suggests metaphorical expressions that highlight physicality more than specificity will constantly remain in use because the stability and universality of such metaphors are conducive to the dissemination and reinforcement of legal thoughts. Additionally, there is a direct correlation between legal metaphors and the government's economic, political, and social concerns, as evidenced by increasing attention paid to various security issues and new challenges in China. Given that the rule of law with Chinese characteristics becomes more institutionally recognized and systematically theorized, legal metaphors are implemented in a top-down manner to justify the exercise of power in CGWRs, making Chinese people identified with the governing philosophy and further contributing to the ideological construction of discourse. This study is thus conducive to a general but insightful understanding of how political stances are embodied and reinforced persuasively in discourse.

Abstract:This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. This initiative is conducive to exchanges and cooperation among countries, injecting new momentum into world economic growth and opening up new space for global development. And discourse analysis can reveal how people use real language in the process of daily communication, the relationship between social-cultural context and discourse construction, and the linguistic phenomena and features revealed by large units of discourse. The proposal of the Belt and Road Initiative is a new model and new idea to promote international cooperation in the context of globalization and regionalization, which is closely related to China’s excellent traditional culture and the historical continuity of China’s cultural exchanges with the world. Therefore, this paper takes the Belt and Road International Summit Forum as an example, and utilizes discourse analysis to elaborate its impact on China and related countries, so as to provide reference for China to take countermeasures as well as to enhance its own international discourse power.

Abstract:Since 2003, the Chinese government has launched a succession of public diplomacy campaigns and programmes, the dynamics, potentials and implications of which have drawn growing scrutiny from Chinese scholars and government officials. Based on document reviews and interviews with Chinese scholars, officials, and think tanks, however, this article finds that the focus of the existing literature is on the image China wishes to project to the outside world, and that there is still little consensus on the strategic motivations behind the country's conduct of public diplomacy. In its conclusion, the article expounds that garnering international respect for China's political and social system and respect domestically for its political legitimacy is what the Chinese government really cares about. This being the case, China will not be satisfied to be merely an emerging power in light of its greater ambition to rejuvenate its values and political system.

Abstract:This thesis makes an analysis of Xi Jinping’s address at the 16th G20 Leaders’ Summit from the perspective of systematic functional grammar. It bases on Halliday’s theory of meta-functions, integrating ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function to analyze the social communicative message of the address. By use of the language skills of three meta-functions, president Xi conveyed his determination to safeguard the interests of the state and the government, call on all countries in the world to jointly practice true multilateralism, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. Also, the thesis reveals the hidden ideological meaning and social structure as well as power control relationship in discourse, highlights the core issues of the current world and emphasizes the global development strategic blueprint in the 21st century, which provides a new analytical method for us to learn about political speech.
Building a Network to “Tell China Stories Well”: Chinese Diplomatic Communication Strategies on Twitter

Abstract:The phrase “tell China stories well” ( jianghao zhongguo gushi ) is an important guide to China’s approach to public diplomacy. Uttered by Chinese president Xi Jinping in 2013, this phrase is an encouragement to use China’s own communication channels to promote and testify to official Chinese views and opinions and to strengthen the international influence of China. While social media diplomacy in China is still in its infancy, the Chinese government has launched a few diplomatic Twitter accounts to develop its public diplomacy network and to post stories about China for a global audience. Using a mixed-methods approach (i.e., manual coding, computer-assisted content analysis, network analysis, and discourse analysis), we examined how the Chinese government has mobilized a small number of diplomatic Twitter accounts to build a communication network and pursue the external propaganda goals of the Communist Party of China.

Abstract:Political discourse is a multidimensional linguistic phenomenon. With the constant expansion of political communication, it is becoming more and more important to analyse it. As China's international position is strengthening, political scientists and linguists pay more attention to the speeches of Chinese leaders, especially President Xi Jinping. Accurate and expressive language ensures the effectiveness of a political initiative. An interesting resource of verbal eloquence in a politician's speeches is the use of images popular in the networks communication practices. Alongside the development of Internet technologies, politicians often use certain words and images from Internet discourse, as the scope of using such expressions is constantly expanding, entering economy, diplomacy and culture. This article attempts to analyse the use of the most frequent 'network' words in President Xi Jinping's speeches and to identify the underlying social and political connotations associated with these words. The conclusion is that Xi Jinping makes skilful use of various types of 'network' imagery, adjusting it to the expression of political ideas. This article presents a typology of «network phraseology» in Xi Jinping's speeches, based on the subject matter of the speeches and outlines political, economic, diplomatic and everyday types of «network discourse». The target group for the Chinese President's speeches is extremely numerous and diverse (in terms of ethnic-cultural, age and intellectual characteristics), but it is the «network» imagery resources that help convey important social and political information to a wide variety of people.
