Abstract:Understanding the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality is critically important for estimating pollution potential and reducing pollution risk. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality at both spatial and temporal scales. The study took place in the Jinjing River watershed in 2010; seven landscape types and four water quality pollutions were chosen as analysis parameters. Three different buffer areas along the river were drawn to analyze the relationship as a function of spatial scale. The results of a Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis suggest that “source” landscape, namely, tea gardens, residential areas, and paddy lands, have positive effects on water quality parameters, while forests exhibit a negative influence on water quality parameters because they represent a “sink” landscape and the sub-watershed level is identified as a suitable scale. Using the principal component analysis, tea gardens, residential areas, paddy lands, and forests were identified as the main landscape index. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was employed to model the relationship between landscape characteristics and water quality for each season. The results demonstrate that both landscape composition and configuration affect water quality. In summer and winter, the landscape metrics explained approximately 80.7 % of the variance in the water quality variables, which was higher than that for spring and fall (60.3 %). This study can help environmental managers to understand the relationships between landscapes and water quality and provide landscape ecological approaches for water quality control and land use management.

Abstract:Daihai is atypicalisland lakein the north of China.Because of the industry and agriculture developmentand the population increase,the pollutants that entered in Daihai Lake was increasing.Monitoring data of the water quality showed that the water quality of the whole lake was inferior to Ⅴwater standard,both Cl~(-) and mineralized degree were higher than the standard value.Moreover,TN、TPand COD_(Mn) exceeded the standard value in different degree.Compared with the monitoring data of 90's,the water quality of Daihai Lake had an obvious tendency to worsen.

Abstract:In semiarid areas, closed lakes are essential for maintaining local ecosystem functions. However, many closed lakes are facing continuous deterioration of water quality. To scientifically and comprehensively evaluate the water quality of Daihai Lake (a closed lake in a semiarid region of China) and analyze its spatiotemporal variations and influencing factors, this study analyzed the following nine water quality parameters at five monitoring stations from 2008 to 2017 using the water quality index (WQI) and multivariate statistical techniques: permanganate index (COD Mn ), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), fluoride (F − ), water temperature (WT), pH, ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), and dissolved oxygen (DO). The results showed that the average WQI at the five monitoring stations varies between 45.53 and 46.98, and the water quality of Daihai Lake has improved (2013–2017) after an initial period of pollution (2008–2013), but it remains poor. The main contaminants were identified as COD Mn , BOD 5 , TN, TP, and F − , which showed average concentrations of 13.12, 6.19, 0.98, 0.13, and 2.82 mg/L, respectively. The water quality showed small spatial variability, but distinct variations between the dry and wet seasons. Discriminant analysis showed that 97% of the water quality data can be classified into the correct seasonal with six parameters (WT, pH, COD Mn , TN, and NH 4 + -N). Anthropogenic activities were the main factors driving the variation in water quality. Climatic conditions promoted the release of internal pollutants and aggravated the impact of external pollutants during the dry and wet seasons, respectively. The minimum WQI determined using only key water quality parameters (DO, BOD 5 , NH 4 + -N, TP, and TN) could effectively reflect the actual water quality. These results can provide references for lake ecosystem protection and water resources management.

Abstract:Understanding the water quality and its influencing factors of different water bodies is essential for managing water resources in closed inland lake basins in semi-arid regions. However, generally, groundwater or surface water is assessed separately, and the differences among different water bodies are neglected. This study assessed the water quality and its influencing factors of different water bodies in the Daihai Lake Basin (a closed inland lake basin in a semi-arid region) by analysing the hydrochemical data of groundwater, and spring, river, and lake waters in the dry and wet seasons. The dominant hydrochemical type of groundwater (81.48%), spring water (80%), and river water (83.33%) was HCO 3 – Ca•Mg, while that of lake water was Cl-Na (100%). Groundwater, spring water, and river water were suitable for drinking and agricultural irrigation; however, the groundwater quality was worse in the wet season than in the dry season. Na + and Cl – majorly affected the lake water quality. The mean NO 3 – concentration in groundwater was 28.39 mg/L, and its non-carcinogenic hazard quotient indicated that high risk areas were mainly distributed in Tiancheng and northern Maihutu. The hydrochemical compositions of groundwater, spring water, and river water were mainly influenced by rock (silicate and carbonate) weathering and cation exchange, and agricultural activities were the main sources of groundwater NO 3 – . Moreover, the lake hydrochemical composition was mainly affected by evaporation and halite dissolution. Thus, groundwater NO 3 – pollution and lake water salinisation should be prioritised. These findings provide a more thorough understanding of water quality and its influencing factors in the closed inland lake basin in the semi-arid region, and can be used to develop the protection of ecosystems and water resources management strategies in the Daihai Lake Basin.

Abstract:A major inland alkalinity lake in Northeast China, the Chagan Lake, was studied for the changes of its water qualities over the past three decades. Water quality data, including total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and fluoride (F-), were analyzed to derive key indices for guiding water quality management. Our study found that the Chagan Lake had an average trophic state index (TSI) ranging 50 to 70; the average TSI for TP ranging between 70 and 80, and the average TSI for TN being 50. Over the past three decades, the TSI values generally trended lower, but there was a slight uptrend from 2012 onwards. Seasonal variations in the concentrations of TN and TP were identified. The TSI values in September were higher than those in May, while the values of un-ionized ammonia (UIA) during rainy seasons were higher than those during dry seasons. The average values of alkalinity and F- in the lake water exceeded the upper limits set in the Chinese water quality standards, i.e., 20 mg/L and 1 mg/L, respectively. It was defined that the evolution of lake water quality proceeded in four consecutive periods, namely natural, deterioration, improvement, and risk period; the improvement period benefitted from a historical water conservation project. Our study concluded that the amount of irrigation discharge into the Chagan must be monitored, and controlled, in order to sustain the critical ecological functions currently provided by the Chagan Lake.

Abstract:The hydrological conditions of river-connected lakes are complex primarily owing to their considerable water-level fluctuations (WLFs). Water quality in such lakes varies with hydrodynamic variations; however, their relationship is not clear. To identify the unique relationship between water level and water quality in river-connected lakes, we used the comprehensive pollution index (CPI) and regression analysis to analyze the spatiotemporal variation in water quality in Dongting Lake from 2015 to 2018 and the effects of water level on water quality. Four water quality parameters were selected: total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), permanganate index (CODMn), and chlorophyll a (Chl-a). The results showed significant spatial variation in the lake water quality, with relatively high concentrations of TN, TP, CODMn, and Chl-a in East Dongting Lake. TN and TP decreased by 12.15% and 37.61%, respectively, from 2015 to 2018, whereas CODMn increased from 1.781 to 2.009 mg/L. Seasonally, TN and TP concentrations were low in the summer and autumn, with high concentrations in the winter and spring. In contrast, CODMn and Chl-a concentrations exhibited opposite trends. The pollution level in Dongting Lake ranged between slightly and moderately polluted, with a CPI ranging from 0.76 to 1.32 across all sampling sites during 2015–2018. The water level in Dongting Lake initially increased and, then, decreased in a year, with marked WLFs owing to seasonal shifts in precipitation and human activities. The water level had significant negative relationships with TN and TP concentrations and a significant positive relationship with CODMn concentration (p < 0.05). Based on the results, strict control of excessive external nutrient loading should be actively implemented in Dongting Lake, in addition to hydrological regulation for effective lake water quality management.

Abstract:This study aimed at characterizing the spatiotemporal variability in water quality in Hulun Lake. In an attempt to assess the water quality status of the lake, data acquired from 13 monitoring points in Hulun Lake from 2012 to 2020 was applied to the improved composite water quality identification index (WQI). The ordinary least squares (OLS) model was used to identify areas of the lake vulnerable to water pollution. The results showed an increase in the WQI value of Hulun Lake and the water quality deteriorated during 2012–2016. The water quality began to improve gradually in 2017. The main variable affecting water quality in the lake transitioned from chemical oxygen demand (CODcr) and total nitrogen (TN) to CODcr and total phosphorus(TP). This shift in major pollutants was an important factor contributing to deterioration in water quality. Seasonal differences in water quality may be attributed to migration of pollutants [CODcr, total dissolved solids (TDS)] to the subglacial water column during the ice-covered period and the subsequent blocking effect of the ice cap. A spatially based OLS model identified the critical impact of Chl.a on water quality. Water transfers were identified as a major factor contributing to an improvement in water quality and to pollutant transformation and contributed to increase in the water quality sensitive area. Despite recent efforts to improve the water quality of Hulun Lake, input of exogenous pollutants, increase in endogenous pollutants, as well as the anaerobic conditions of the ice layer pose significant challenges to the management of Hulun Lake. The implementation of pollutant control measures are, in particular, recommended on the northwest shore for managing the water quality of the lake.

Abstract:Water quality safety is the key factor to maintain the ecosystem service functions of lakes. Field investigations and statistical analyses were carried out to study the water quality of a large, agriculture-stressed lakes (e.g., Chagan Lake) in Northeast China. The hydro-chemical properties of the Chagan Lake are HCO3·CO3-Na. Nutrient (N and P) and non-nutrient (pH and F−) were found to be the major factors that threaten water quality safety of the lake. The concentration of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) was found to vary seasonally and at different locations. The overall lake water had mean TN and TP values of 2.19 mg/L and 0.49 mg/L, respectively, in summer. TN was the major factor for water quality deterioration in the western region of the lake, while TP was the principal factor in the other regions, as determined by a principal component analysis (PCA). Fluoride (F−) concentration in the lake water were related to the values of total dissolved solid (TDS), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC). In addition, eutrophication is a fundamental index that has been affecting the ecological evaluation of water quality. The results showed that trophic level index (TLI), trophic state index (TSI), and eutrophication index (EI) were evaluated to quantify the risk of eutrophication. However, TLI and TSI can better describe the purification effect of the wetland. These indices showed that the lake water was hyper-eutrophic in summer, with TLI, TSI, and EI values of 60.1, 63.0, and 66.6, respectively. Disparities in water quality were observed among whole areas of the lake. Overall, this study revealed that controlling agriculture drainage is crucial for lake water quality management. The study generated critical data for making water quality management plans to control the risk.

Abstract:The water quality of a basin is pronouncedly affected by the surrounding types of land use. Analyzing the impact of LULC and landscape patterns on water quality is critical for identifying potential drivers. To further study how LUCC affects the water quality in a typical plateau lake basin, this study investigated the impacts of land-use types on water quality in the Dianchi Lake Basin in Southwest China. We analyzed changes in land-use types and the landscape pattern of the Dianchi basin, calculated the CWQI (Canadian Water Quality Index) value based on the water quality indexes (PH, total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), permanganate index (CODMn), five-day biochemical ox-ygen demand (BOD5), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), turbitidy, and chlorophyll-a (Chla)), used the RDA (Redundancy Analysis) and SMLR (Stepwise multiple linear regression) methods, the coupling degree, coupling coordination degree, and the geographical detector model to explore the relationship between water quality and changes in the land-use type. The results show that (1) changes in the land-use types were obvious: the majority of the land, which was originally forest land, became built land in 2020 and farmland in 1990 (except for the Dianchi water). Landscape pattern indexes indicated that almost all land-use types were first scattered, then gathered from 1990 to 2020. (2) Changes in the water quality of Dianchi Lake lagged behind the changes in land-use types, and the variation trends were similar to the landscape pattern variation trends. The CWQI value decreased in a nearly linear fashion from 1990 to 1998, exhibited a slight change from 1999 to 2013, and quickly increased from 2013. (3) Land-use types demonstrated a tight correlation with the Dianchi water quality, and LPI was the most dominant factor in both Caohai Lake and Waihai Lake. (4) There were different indexes affecting the coupling coordination degrees of Caohai Lake and Waihai Lake.

Causal Analysis of the Spatial-Temporal Variation of Water Quality in Baiyangdian Lake

Abstract:As an important lake in the Haihe river basin, the Baiyangdian Lake plays an important role in the ecological health and environmental safety of the whole basin. To investigate the spatial-temporal variation of the water quality and the main factors affecting the quality, we employed grey clustering, comprehensive pollution index and single factor pollution indexes. The results showed that the water quality of Baiyangdian Lake has generally decreased since 1973. Specifically, the proportion of water with worse quality than class III increased from 14.3% in 1973 to 83% in 2007. The order of the comprehensive pollution index in the year 2006 was spring > summer > winter > autumn. The comprehensive pollution index of TP was the highest among the four parameters, reaching 14.86, while the comprehensive pollution index of BOD_5 was the lowest, with an average of 7.67. In spatial terms,the order of pollution was northwest > northeast > southeast and southwest. Comparative analysis of the natural and seeial aspects indicated that the key natural impact factor was the quantity of inflow, which was far lower than the minimum ecological water demand. The social impact factors included the primary industry in Bacding, the secondary industry in Anxin and the tertiary industry in Baoding, with Pearson correlation coefficients of 0. 771,0. 708 and 0. 624, respectively. The industry and fishery of Anxin and the agriculture in Baoding were key factors with Pearson correlation coefficients of 0. 746,0. 734 and O. 661, respectively. In addition, the correlation coeffieients between the populations of Anxin and Baoding and water quality were 0. 731 and 0. 690, respectively. To improve the water quality of the lake, we suggest: ① Control the water quality of the inflow, the non-point pollution and internal pollution of Baiyangdian; ② Implement regioualized management (e. g. , the lake could be divided into a pollution control area, a comprehensive improvement area and a key preteoted area) ; ③Enhance the ecological monitoring and early warning system, and improve environmental public policy and industrial environment management.
Effects of land use, topography, climate and socio-economic factors on geographical variation pattern of inland surface water quality in China

Abstract:The deterioration of water quality has become a primary environmental concern worldwide. Understanding the status of water quality and identifying the influencing factors are important for water resources management. However, reported analyses have mostly been conducted in small and focused areas. It is still unclear if factors driving spatial variation in water quality would be different in extended spatial scales. In this paper, we analyzed spatial pattern of inland surface water quality in China using a dataset with four water quality parameters (i.e., pH, DO, NH4+-N and CODMn) and the water quality level. We tested the effects of anthropogenic (i.e., land use and socio-economic) and natural (i.e., climatic and topographic) factors on spatial variation in water quality. The study concluded that the overall inland surface water quality in China was at level III (fair). Water quality level was strongly correlated with CODMn and NH4+-N concentration. In contrast to reported studies that suggested land use patterns were the determinants of inland surface water quality, this study revealed that both anthropogenic and natural factors played important roles in explaining spatial variation of inland surface water quality in China. Among the tested explanatory variables, mean elevation within watershed appeared as the best predictor for pH, while annual precipitation and mean air temperature were the most important explanatory variables for CODMn and DO, respectively. NH4+-N concentration and water quality level were most strongly correlated with the percent of forest cover in watershed. Compared to studies at smaller spatial scales, this study found different influencing factors of surface water quality, suggesting that factors may play different roles at different spatial scales of consideration. Therefore management policies and measures in water quality control must be established and implemented accordingly. Since currently adopted parameters for monitoring of inland surface water quality in China are largely influenced by natural variables, additional physicochemical and biological indicators are needed for a robust assessment of human impacts on water quality.

Abstract:Damage to the water ecosystems and the deterioration of lake water resources may negatively affect the surface water resources, particularly which of the daily drinking water supply of residents. Therefore, it is particularly important to study the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of water quality in large lakes. We analyzed the data from six sampling sites in Lake Chaohu from 2001 to 2017 and eight sampling sites of the inflow rivers in 2001, 2009, and 2017. The 6 sampling sites were divided into SG I and SG II through cluster analysis, and the spatio-temporal changes of the water quality in the Lake Chaohu Basin were studied. The results indicated the following: all nutrient variables had relatively high concentrations in SG II except DO, while SG I had relatively high concentrations of only TN. Besides, the value of Chl a in each group is generally high. On the temporal scale, the changes in the water quality of the lake showed strong seasonality; the nutrient variable (TN, TP, NH4-N, and CODMn) except DO in the inflow rivers is generally higher than that of the lake; the water quality of Lake Chaohu has improved during the study period, and it has also improved to a certain extent compared with that of the late 1980s. Fortunately, parts water quality parameters of Lake Chaohu have improved faster than that of the other four largest freshwater lakes in China. This research result has a certain guiding significance for the prevention and control of large lake water pollution.

Abstract:Surface water pollution has always posed a serious challenge to water quality management . Improving water quality management requires figuring out how to comprehend water quality conditions scientifically and effectively as well as quantitatively identify regional pollution sources. In this study, Xianghai Lake, a typical lake-type wetland on the Northeast China Plain, was taken as the research area. Based on a geographic information system (GIS) method and 11 water quality parameters, the single-factor evaluation and comprehensive water quality index (WQI) methods were used to comprehensively evaluate the water quality of the lake-type wetland in the level period. Four key water quality parameters were determined by the principal component analysis (PCA) method, and more convenient comprehensive water quality evaluation models, the minimum WQI considering weights (WQI min-w ) and the minimum WQI without considering weights (WQI min-nw ) were established. The multiple statistical method and the absolute principal component score-multiple liner regression (APCS-MLR) model were combined to analyse the lake pollution sources based on the spatial changes in pollutants. The findings demonstrated that the WQI min-nw model's water quality evaluation outcome was more accurate when weights were not taken into account. The WQI min-nw model can be used as a simple and convenient way to comprehend the variations in water quality in wetlands of lakes and reservoirs. It was concluded that the comprehensive water quality in the study area was at a "medium" level, and COD Mn was the main limiting factor. Nonpoint source pollution (such as agricultural planting and livestock breeding) was the most important factor affecting the water quality of Xianghai Lake (with a comprehensive contribution rate of 31.65%). The comprehensive contribution rates of sediment endogenous and geological sources, phytoplankton and other plants, and water diversion and other hydrodynamic impacts accounted for 25.12%, 19.65%, and 23.58% of the total impact, respectively. This study can provide a scientific method for water quality assessment and management of lake wetlands, and an effective support for migration of migratory birds, habitat protection and grain production security.

Abstract:Field surveys and sample analyses were conducted from January 2018 to December 2019 on Daye Lake, Cihu Lake, Baoan Lake, and Xiandao Lake to understand the water quality characteristics of typical lakes in southeast Hubei. A fuzzy comprehensive evaluation was conducted and the comprehensive trophic level index was applied to evaluate the lakes' water quality. The results showed differences in the regional, spatial, and temporal distributions of physical and chemical indicators in typical lakes in southeast Hubei. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation showed that the water quality levels in Daye, Cihu, Baoan, and Xiandao Lakes for 2018 and 2019 were IV, IV, III, and II and V, IV, III, and II, respectively, with seasonal variations in water quality occurring during the year. The trophic level index results showed that Cihu Lake was mildly eutrophic in 2018 and moderately eutrophic in 2019, and Daye, Baoan, and Xiandao Lakes were mildly eutrophic, mildly eutrophic, and mesotrophic, respectively. Lake water quality was influenced by land use types, landscape configuration, inflowing rivers, precipitation, and interactions between land use and seasons. This study helps us to understand the trend and causes of lake pollution in Southeast Hubei, which is conducive to watershed management and the control of water quality deterioration, and also has an important role in regulating the sustainable development of industry and agriculture in the watershed.

Abstract:● The water environment of Erhai Lake has shown satisfactory, declining and improving. ● Total N and P, and chemical oxygen demand as key water environment indicators. ● Pollution load distribution and control measures are key to Erhai Lake management. Elucidating the spatiotemporal pattern of water quality and algal biomass is crucial for accurately tracing pollution sources and reducing the risk of algal blooms in lake systems. This study analyzed the spatiotemporal variability of water quality and algal biomass in Erhai Lake from 1994 to 2021 using water quality index (WQI), Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope combined methods. The potential causes of water quality deterioration and algal biomass dynamics were also elucidated. The results showed that the historical changes in the water environment of Erhai Lake mainly had three stages: satisfactory (1994‒2001), deteriorating (2002‒2010) and improving (2011‒2021). The changes in water quality and algal biomass were primarily affected by total nitrogen, total phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand in different stages. The water environment of Erhai Lake is currently improving significantly, starting in the southern area that is furthest from the sources of agricultural pollution, especially in summer and autumn. This is attributed to the implementation of control measures resulting in lower pollutant loads at particular times and places. Therefore, it is necessary to continue to promote standardized livestock farming, to strengthen rural wastewater collection and to investigate measures such as the interruption of the endogenous cycle.

Abstract:This study aims at assessment the water quality condition in the rivers of Lake Chaohu Basin (LCB), and exploring the crucial parameters affecting its water quality. Four sampling activities were conducted seasonally from April to December in 2018 at 83 sites covering main rivers of LCB. We measured 15 physicochemical parameters, such as turbidity (tur), dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonium (NH4-N), nitrate (NO3-N), and permanganate index (CODMn). There were significant differences of the 15 environmental parameters (except T) on spatial level, and three significant groups (i.e., Group I, II, and III) were divided according to cluster analysis. Water quality was evaluated by a water quality index (WQI) based on these parameters, which are commonly used in WQI calculation. Generally, the water quality state was classified as "moderate" in LCB (mean value of 69.1). Meanwhile, the state varied obviously among the three groups, with "good" in Group I and "moderate" in Group II and III. Seasonally, WQI in autumn was highest, which was significantly different from that in the other seasons. The distribution of water quality was consistent with other studies regardless of some typical rivers and the whole basin. Moreover, a minimum water quality index (WQImin) consisted of 5 crucial parameters (i.e., tur, DO, NH4-N, NO3-N, and CODMn) was not significantly different with the WQI based on all the 15 parameters, and its percentage error was relatively low (6.02%). With the excellent application in Lake Taihu Basin (LTB) nearby LCB, this WQImin was robust and potentially universal in determining river water quality assessment in both basins. This finding is probably beneficial to low-cost and quick water quality evaluation in adjacent basins. In addition, TN maybe not suitable for WQImin development in rivers, especially in the area with relatively high concentration, which probably resulted in an underestimation of water quality condition.

Abstract:Lakes are important water resources and a part of the hydrological ecosystem. They are sensitive to climate change and human activities, especially in arid and semiarid areas. In this study, Landsat satellite images were used to study lake area changes, and groundwater in Inner Mongolia from 1990 to 2021 was analysed. The causes of lake area changes were also quantified in terms of climate change, human activities, and groundwater variations. The results showed that although there were differences in the trends of different lakes, the overall lake area exhibited a decreasing trend, and groundwater change was the main factor. The water balance calculations revealed that groundwater served as the main recharge source for lakes. The recharge of lake water by groundwater should not be ignored, as well as the recharge of lake water by precipitation and river water, as determined on the basis of the hydrogen and oxygen isotopic signatures of lake water, precipitation, and groundwater. Therefore, the lake area is closely related to groundwater in Inner Mongolia. In the process of lake ecological management, the rational development and exploitation of groundwater in the region should also be considered. This study has great significance for improving decision support for ecological environmental protection and water resource management in arid and semiarid areas.

Abstract:As one of the important water sources of the desert ecosystem in the Tarim Basin, the largest fishery base in Xinjiang, and the former largest inland and freshwater lake of China, the water quality of Bosten Lake is worthy of government and public attention. To determine the water’s hydrochemical composition and the water quality of Bosten Lake, analyses of the spatial distribution, water pollution status and irrigation suitability were conducted with statistical methods, including redundancy and factor analyses, inverse distance weighted interpolation, and water quality assessment and saturation index simulation of minerals in the water from a survey done in 2018. The results suggested that the average total dissolved solids (TDS) of Bosten Lake in 2018 was 1.32 g/L, and the lake is alkaline with a pH of 8.47. The strength of the water exchange capacity affected the spatial distribution of TDS. The spatial distribution of TDS and its value can be significantly changed by restoring the water supply of seasonal rivers in the northwest. The water of Bosten Lake contains sulfate and sodium groups, which are mainly affected by lake evaporation. As the pH increases, the content of carbonate ions increases, while the content of bicarbonate ions decreases. The spatial distributions of other major ions are consistent with that of the TDS. The spatial distribution of potentially toxic elements is more complicated than that of major ions. In general, the spatial distribution of Cu and As is more consistent with the spatial distribution of electrical conductivity or TDS. The spatial distributions of the Zn, Se and pH values are more consistent with respect to other variables. Although the water of Bosten Lake is still at a permissible level for water irrigation, the lake is moderately polluted, and the local site almost has a highly polluted status. The research results are of great significance for lake environmental protection and management as well as watershed ecological restoration.

Abstract:Stream water quality has been increasingly deteriorated in recent decades because of anthropogenic activities. Assessing water quality via key environmental parameters and quantifying the respective influence of landscape metrics like landscape configuration, land use composition and topography, which can overall represent anthropogenic activities, can facilitate the development of improved water quality management strategies. However, few studies concentrate on the quantitative effect of these landscape metrics groups on the change of key water quality parameters. In this study, with Poyang Lake basin, we selected key factors of the 14 environmental variables for the cost-effective water quality evaluation model of the minimum water quality index (WQImin) by the random forest method and quantified the contribution of different groups of landscape metrics on key water quality parameters by redundancy analysis and variance partitioning analysis. The results indicated that six water quality parameters of ammonium (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), permanganate index (CODMn), dissolved oxygen (DO), fecal coliforms (F.coli) and total phosphorus (TP) can significantly represent the overall water quality of the Poyang Lake basin. Based on WQImin, the water quality of Fuhe River and Xiushui River was significantly better than that of Ganjiang River, Raohe River, and Xinjiang River in Poyang Lake basin. The contribution of landscape metrics to water quality variation followed the order of landscape configuration (19.0–22.5%) > land use composition (5.2–20.2%) > topography (5.7–8.0%). Here, Build-up land was the environmental factor contributing most significantly to the variation in water quality at both spatial and seasonal scales (5.7–21%). Build-up land, Agricultural land, Contagion index and Cohesion index were positively correlated with TN, TP, CODMn, and NH4+-N and negatively with DO at different scales; Grassland, Forest land, Hypsometric Integral index, Slope, and Mean Shape index showed the opposite relationship. The influence of these landscape types changed with spatial and seasonal scales, more significantly explaining variations in water quality during the dry season and at buffer scale. Changes in water quality at the spatial scale were most sensitive to land use composition. Our results represent a basis for the improvement of water quality management.
