Abstract:The emergence of flexible sensors addresses the limitations of traditional detection equipment, such as large size, high cost, and inconvenient portability. These sensors have significantly advanced the development of wearable electronic devices for applications in electronic skin, energy harvesting, and energy storage. To enhance the sensitivity of flexible sensors, we developed a hierarchical polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber-based piezoelectric sensor. By utilizing coaxial electrospinning, we fabricated nanofibers with hollow interiors and porous outer walls. Additionally, microstructures were constructed on the fiber membrane surface by modifying the collector's shape. The resulting microstructured hollow PVDF nanofiber membrane exhibited high beta-phase content (91.31 %), excellent flexibility (maximum strain 56.9 %), and high porosity (88.94 %). The sensor demonstrated a sensitivity of 2.7 V/N (1.08 V/kPa) and a maximum output voltage of 10.1 V, approximately three times higher than that of solid PVDF nanofibers without microstructures. Even after 14,400 cycles of impact, the sensor maintained stable output. The sensor was successfully applied to human activity monitoring and gesture recognition, showcasing its ability to monitor various human activities, respond rapidly (60.4 ms), and synchronously control a mechanical palm to perform different gestures. This work highlights the potential of hierarchically structured hollow PVDF nanofibers in advancing the performance and application scope of flexible piezoelectric sensors.
Piezoelectric Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber Film-Based Dual-Function Self-Powered Flexible Sensor.

Abstract:To meet the growing demands in flexible and wearable electronics, various sensors have been designed for detecting and monitoring the physical quantity changes. However, most of these sensors can only detect one certain kind of physical quantity based on a single mechanism. In this paper, we have fabricated a multifunctional sensor made from carbonized electrospun polyacrylonitrile/barium titanate (PAN-C/BTO) nanofiber film. It can detect two physical quantities (pressure and curvature), independently and simultaneously, by integrating piezoresistive, piezoelectric, and triboelectric effects. For flex sensing with the impedance change of PAN-C/BTO nanofiber films during bending, it had a sensitivity of 1.12 deg-1 from 58.9° to 120.2° and a working range of 28°-150°. For self-powered force sensing, it had a gauge factor of 1.44 V·N-1 within the range of 0.15-25 N. The sensor had a long stability over 60 000 cycles at both sensing modes. The inclusion of barium titanate nanoparticles (BTO NPs) into the nanofiber film had an over 2.4 times enhancement of sensitivity for pressure sensing because of the synergy of piezoelectric and triboelectric effects. On the basis of multifunction and modularity, a series of potential applications of the sensor were demonstrated, including sensing human's swallowing, walking gaits, finger flexure, and finger-tapping. The self-powered flexible dual-mode sensor has great application potential in human-computer interactive and smart wearable sensing systems.

Abstract:A hyperelastic percolative conductive composite is proposed with acetylene black (AB) as conductive filler introduced into Ecoflex (R) 00-30 elastomer matrix. The conductivity could be enhanced by several orders according to percolation theory and the Young's modulus could also be tailored by modifying AB volume ratio. The AB-Ecoflex composite exhibits electric conductivity high as 6.4 S.m(-1) and remains stable after 100 cycles at 200% strain. This composite with high conductivity, stretchability and stability shows high potential as a competitive candidate for wearable strain sensors to detect human body motions and for human-machine interface application. Abstract:Abstract Owing to the robust scalability, ease of control and substantial industrial applications, the utilization of electrospinning technology to produce piezoelectric nanofiber materials demonstrates a significant potential in the development of wearable products including flexible wearable sensors. However, it is unfortunate that the attainment of high-performance piezoelectric materials through this method remains a challenging task. Herein, a high-performance composite nanofiber membrane with a coherent and uniformly dispersed two-dimensional network topology composed of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/dopamine (DA) nanofiber membranes and ultrafine PVDF/DA nanofibers was successfully fabricated by the electrospinning technique. Based on the evidence obtained from simulations, experimental and theoretical results, it was confirmed that the unique structure of the nanofiber membrane significantly enhances the piezoelectric performance. The present PVDF/DA composite nanofibers demonstrated a remarkable piezoelectric performance such as a wide response range (1.5–40 N), high sensitivity to weak forces (0–4 N, 7.29 V N −1 ), and outstanding operational durability. Furthermore, the potential application of the present PVDF/DA membrane as a flexible wearable sensor for monitoring human motion and subtle physiological signals has also been validated. This work not only introduces a novel strategy for the application of electrospun nanofibers in sensors but also provides new insights into high-performance piezoelectric materials. Abstract:The exponential rate of advancement in flexible electronics and sensing technologies has enabled the detection of diverse vital signs and biomarkers with the use of exceptionally lightweight and flexible devices that affix to human skin. To support the continuous operation of these technologies and to enable them to track their multiple parameters, a flexible, self-powered energy supply unit with a high output is essential. In this work, we develop highly flexible and cost-effective three-phase carbon black (CB)–potassium sodium niobate (KNN)–epoxy resin composite films for sensing and energy-harvesting applications. The mechanical and piezoelectric properties of the films were studied by varying the CB and KNN contents. The potential of the proposed films for sensing and energy-harvesting on complex surfaces was demonstrated using a finger-bending test, during which a tenfold increase in the output voltage was observed for films containing 1 vol% CB. Our study provides a feasible solution for the development of high-performance piezoelectric sensing and energy-harvesting devices in soft wearable electronics.

Abstract:Carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) can be used in aging infrastructures as a reinforcement because of their excellent mechanical properties, and they can also be used in the support maintenance and repair work of these structures. However, the development of CFRPs as reinforcement while achieving self-powered damage detection is still challenging. Herein, a sodium potassium niobate (KNN) nanoparticle-filled epoxy (KNN–EP) film was fabricated and combined with advanced CFRP electrodes. The obtained composites exhibited dramatically enhanced mechanical properties. In addition, CFRP contributed to the energy harvesting output (peak-to-peak output voltage Vpp = 7.25 mV), which was over 600% higher than that of the KNN–EP. Thus, this composite could work as a force sensor for damage detection. In the end-notch bending test, the voltage signals generated by CFRP/KNN–EP accurately corresponded to the crack growth, which could provide the real-time crack state and prediction of fracture occurrence. Therefore, this work provided a new strategy for structural enhancement and kinetic energy harvesting, which can be used to detect damage behavior in infrastructures.

Abstract:Flexible piezoresistive sensors, which can convert specific mechanical information (such as compression, bending, tensile, and torsion) into a resistance value change signal through the piezoresistive effect, have attracted more and more attention. However, how to achieve the simple, low-cost fabrication of a piezoresistive sensor is still a challenge. Herein, we report a facile strategy that introduces conductive carbon black (CB) and shear thickening gel (SG) composite into a melamine sponge (MS) to generate an MS-SG-CB composite with a unique force-electric coupling effect. A flexible sensor derived from the MS-SG-CB composite can not only accurately identify deformation signals during static stretching and compression while monitoring human movement status in real time but also recognize electrical signals under dynamic impact in a very short time (6 ms). The 3 × 3 flexible array built on this basis can accurately identify the mass and position of heavy objects. Furthermore, based on the flame-retardant properties of MS, the flame-retardant ammonium polyphosphate (APP) is further introduced into MS-SG-CB to obtain MS-SG-CB-APP composite with excellent flame retardancy and stable temperature electrical response behavior, expanding its application in the field of high temperature trigger alarm.

Abstract:Self-powered operation, flexibility, excellent mechanical properties, and ultra-high sensitivity are highly desired properties for pressure sensors in human health monitoring and anthropomorphic robotic systems. Piezoelectric pressure sensors, with enhanced electromechanical performance to effectively distinguish multiple mechanical stimuli (including pressing, stretching, bending, and twisting), have attracted interest to precisely acquire the weak signals of the human body. In this work, we prepared a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/ multi-walled carbon nanotube (P(VDF-TrFE)/MWCNT) composite by an electrospinning process and stretched it to achieve alignment of the polymer chains. The composite membrane demonstrated excellent piezoelectricy, favorable mechanical strength, and high sensitivity. The piezoelectric coefficient d33 value was approximately 50 pm/V, the Young’s modulus was ~0.986 GPa, and the sensitivity was ~540 mV/N. The resulting composite membrane was employed as a piezoelectric pressure sensor to monitor small physiological signals including pulse, breath, and small motions of muscle and joints such as swallowing, chewing, and finger and wrist movements. Moderate doping with carbon nanotubes had a positive impact on the formation of the β phase of the piezoelectric device, and the piezoelectric pressure sensor has the potential for application in health care systems and smart wearable devices.

Breathable and Large Curved Area Perceptible Flexible Piezoresistive Sensors Fabricated with Conductive Nanofiber Assemblies

Abstract:The rapid development of wearable electronics, humanoid robots, and artificial intelligence requires sensors to sensitively and stably detect external stress variations in large areas or on three-dimensional (3D) irregularly shaped surfaces while possessing the comfort. Most importantly, the flexibility and 3D compliance of sensors, and the fitting state of the interface between the sensor and the object are of great significance to the sensing accuracy and reliability. The ordered or random stacking and entangling of flexible and electrically conductive fiber materials can form a highly porous and mechanically stable fiber assembly. The changes in external stress can lead to the air trapped in the fiber assembly to flow in and out rapidly and repeatedly, as well as the reversible mechanical deformation of fiber materials. Correspondingly, the contact areas between electrically conductive fibers in the fiber assembly are reversibly changed, which makes the conductive and flexible fiber assembly be an ideal candidate for piezoresistive sensing material. It can be further expected that the statistical stability of contact points between conductive fibers under the stress may significantly increase with the decrease in fiber diameters. Herein, a new method to make a flexible piezoresistive sensor with conductive and porous fiber assembly was proposed. An ultrasensitive piezoresistive material was facilely prepared by fabricating conductive poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) nanofiber assemblies. The sensing performance of the piezoresistive sensor was optimized by regulating the nanofiber morphology, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties. The flexible piezoresistive sensor exhibited a sensitivity of 2.79 kPa–1, a response time of 3 ms, and a recovery time of 10 ms. The sensing performance at different working frequencies was stable and durable within 4500 cycling tests. Abstract:This study presents a novel method for fabricating intrinsic piezoelectric composites, aligning few‐layer nanosheets within a polymer matrix. Achieving a piezoelectric coefficient akin to PVDF, it offers significant cost‐efficiency, safety, and scalability advantages over conventional materials and has key applications include wearable sensors and ultrasound energy harvesting. This study showcases advancements in piezoelectric technology and nanoscale alignment processes. Few‐layer nanosheets (NSs) of hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) display notable piezoelectric properties. Yet, their integration into polymers typically yields non‐piezoelectric composites due to NSs' random distribution. We introduce a facile method for fabricating intrinsic piezoelectric composites incorporated with NSs without electric poling. Our innovative process aligns NSs within polyvinyl alcohol polymer, leveraging ice‐water interfacial tension, water crystallization thrust, and directional cross‐linking during freezing. The resulting PE composites exhibit a maximum piezoelectric coefficient of up to 25.5–28.4 pC N−1, comparable to polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), with significant cost‐efficiency, safety, and scalability advantages over conventional materials. Using this composite, we develop highly sensitive wearable pressure and strain sensors, and an ultrasound energy harvester. These sensors detect finger bending and differentiate between walking and running, while the harvester generates ~1.18 V/2.31 μA under 1 W cm−2 ultrasound input underwater. This universal method offers a novel manufacturing technique for piezoelectric composites, demonstrating remarkable effectiveness in synthesizing intrinsic piezoelectric composites based on 2D materials. Moreover, its potential extends to applications in wearable electronics and energy harvesting, promising significant advancements in these fields.

[Continuous guidance for venous punctures using a new pulsed Doppler probe: efficiency, safety].

Abstract:Serious complications may occur after "blind" profound venous puncture in intensive care units. To secure these punctures, we designed a new fingertip pulsed Doppler (FPD) 5 MHz probe with a lateral to center indentation to guide the needle into the ultrasonic flux. A specific ultrasound analyzer indicating depth and diameter of the vessel was made for this use. The material was first tested in an experimental animal study. Results of animal venous punctures were successful 20/21. This material was then tested on patients with previous failure of "blind" punctures: results of 4 FPD punctures were successful in all 12 cases but one (catheterization not completed). We started a prospective multi-unit randomized study with various operators (junior residents, senior staff members), compared the success rate and type, the procedure duration of blind standard versus FPD punctures. We conclude in the safety and easy use of the FPD for central venous punctures.
Electromechanical characterization and kinetic energy harvesting of piezoelectric nanocomposites reinforced with glass fibers

Abstract:Piezoelectric composites are a significant research field because of their excellent mechanical flexibility and sufficient stress-induced voltage. Furthermore, due to the widespread use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in recent years, small-sized piezoelectric composites have attracted a lot of attention. Also, there is an urgent need to develop evaluation methods for these composites. This paper evaluates the piezoelectric and mechanical properties of potassium sodium niobate (KNN)-epoxy and KNN-glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites using a modified small punch (MSP) and nanoindentation tests in addition to d33 measurements. An analytical solution for the piezoelectric composite thin plate under bending was obtained for the determination of the bending properties. Due to the glass fiber inclusion, the bending strength increased by about twice, and Young's modulus in the length direction increased by approximately two times (more than that of the KNN-epoxy); however, in the thickness direction, Young's modulus decreased by less than half. An impact energy harvesting test was then performed on the KNN-epoxy and KNN-GFRP composites. As a result, the output voltage of KNN-GFRP was larger than that of KNN-epoxy. Also, the output voltage was about 2.4 V with a compressive stress of 0.2 MPa, although the presence of the glass fibers decreased the piezoelectric constants. Finally, damped flexural vibration energy harvesting test was carried out on the KNN-epoxy and KNN-GFRP composites. The KNN-epoxy was broken during the test, however KNN-GFRP composite with a load resistance of 10 MΩ generated 35 nJ of energy. Overall, through this work, we succeeded in developing piezoelectric energy harvesting composite materials that can withstand impact and bending vibration using glass fibers and also established a method for evaluating the electromechanical properties with small test specimen.

Abstract:Multifunctional capability, flexible design, rugged lightweight construction, and self-powered operation are desired attributes for electronics that directly interface with the human body or with advanced robotic systems. For these and related applications, piezoelectric materials, in forms that offer the ability to bend and stretch, are attractive for pressure/force sensors and mechanical energy harvesters. In this paper we introduce a large area, flexible piezoelectric material that consists of sheets of electrospun fibers of the polymer poly[(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene]. The flow and mechanical conditions associated with the spinning process yield free-standing, three-dimensional architectures of aligned arrangements of such fibers, in which the polymer chains adopt strongly preferential orientations. The resulting material offers exceptional piezoelectric characteristics, to enable, as an example, ultra-high sensitivity for measuring pressure, even at exceptionally small values (0.1 Pa). Quantitative analysis provides detailed insights into the pressure sensing mechanisms, and engineering design rules. Applications range from self-powered micro-mechanical elements, to self-balancing robots and sensitive impact detectors.

Abstract:Piezoresistive sensors have profusely permeated our lives nowadays and drawn a great deal of attention because of their facile fabrication, appropriate flexibility, and excellent sensitivity. However, the combination of elastic fabric and conductive coatings, due to coating quality and their interaction with the fabric matrix, is still challenging. Here, a kind of sensitive and durable piezoresistive sensors based on knitted fabric decorated with a composite coating of carbon black (CB), cellulose nanofiber (CNF), thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and thermoplastic elastomer styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) were fabricated via solution blending assisted with ultrasonication and dip coating. The chemical analysis indicates strong interactions have been constructed by CNF between coating and fabric, which improve mechanical durability and stability. The as-prepared sensor displayed pressure sensing sensitivity of 0.0316 kPa−1 ( 200 kPa), and exceptional stability (more than 1000 cycles). Eventually, the sensors were attached to different human body places for motion detection, and the testing results presented well. In a nutshell, this sensitive and stable flexible piezoresistive sensor is able to put a step ahead in smart wear and healthcare application.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel flexible tactile sensor array for dynamic triaxial force measurement. Piezoresistive nanofibers, which are fabricated via the electrospinning method and are composed of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), are selected as the sensing material. The sensitive piezoresistive layer, which has micron-scale thickness, is wrapped in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a bumped surface. This structure not only detects triaxial forces of different magnitudes and frequencies, but also can recognize the shape, size, and curvature of external objects using multiple measuring points of the sensor. When the sensor is subjected to normal forces at different frequencies, the measuring voltage shows good responses with variations of less than 1.21 %. When the sensor is subjected to shear forces, the coefficient of variation is less than 2.05%. In addition, when the sensor is stressed at multiple measuring points, the voltage response errors between the different points are less than 5.29%. The sensor shows high sensitivity (with a resistance change that can reach four orders of magnitude) and high response-speeds (response within 62 ms) in validation experiments. The proposed flexible sensor is efficient in triaxial force detection and has the potential for application to prosthetic hands and wearable devices.

Abstract:When sensors are embedded in composites for structural integrity monitoring (SIM), the sensors per se, unfortunately, degrade the original integrity of host composites. Envisaging such deficiency and facilitated by advances in nanotechnology, we develop a new type of ultrathin, piezoresistive sensors using spraying coating and nanocomposites formulated with graphene nanoplatelets/polyvinylpyrrolidone. The sensors are deposited on dielectric membranes made of partially pre-cured B-stage epoxy films, then electrified using carbon nanotube film (CNT-film)-made wires, and implanted in carbon fibre-reinforced polymer composites (CFRPs), to form a sensor network. Only ∼45 μm thick (including wires), the implanted sensors exhibit high compatibility and nonintrusive attributes with CFRPs, enabling composites to perceive broadband signals in situ, ranging from static strain (with a high gauge factor of 34.5) to structure-guided ultrasonic waves up to 450 kHz – the first time that piezoresistive sensors implanted in CFRPs respond to dynamic strains in such a broad frequency band. CFRPs with implanted sensor networks are endowed with capacity of in situ SIM, yet not compromising their original integrity. With remarkably reduced intrusion to composites – as proven in tensile and bending tests, the developed sensors outperform prevailing sensors for SIM of composites such as lead zirconate titanate-based sensors.

Abstract:Flexible piezoelectric materials have attracted increasing attention as active components in wearable and flexible electronics, soft robotics and artificial skins or muscles. Although constructing polymer-based composites is becoming a common solution to balance their piezoelectricity and flexibility, challenges associated with the electrical and mechanical mismatch between the polymer matrix and the ceramic fillers remain. Here, taking the piezoelectric composite of lead zirconate titanate-polydimethylsiloxane (PZT/PDMS) as the example, we perform phase-field simulations to spatially and temporally study the electrical and mechanical response. It is found that good connectivity of fillers could provide a load transfer path and break topological restriction of filler morphology on polarization dipoles. Then, we propose an interface design strategy to address the mismatch problem in '3-3' composites, which could greatly enhance the overall piezoelectric response under different modes of compressing, stretching and bending. Finally, we experimentally fabricate high-performance flexible composites with an ultrahigh piezoelectric charge coefficient of 155 pC N-1 and a low Young's modulus of 63 MPa. This research offers a promising route for designing flexible piezoelectric composites by synergistically regulating connectivity and mismatch problems, which is also expected to guide the optimization of other actuators or sensors related with electromechanical coupling effect.
Flexible Self-Powered Friction Piezoelectric Sensor Based on Structured PVDF-Based Composite Nanofiber Membranes

Abstract:With the rapid development of the economy and technology, intelligent wearable devices have gradually entered public life. Flexible sensors, as the main component of wearable devices, have been widely concerned. However, traditional flexible sensors need an external power supply, lacking flexibility and sustainable power supply. In this study, structured poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composite nanofiber membranes doped with different mass fractions of MXene and zinc oxide (ZnO) were prepared by electrospinning and were then assembled to flexible self-powered friction piezoelectric sensors. The addition of MXene and ZnO endowed PVDF nanofiber membranes with better piezoelectric properties. The structured PVDF/MXene-PVDF/ZnO (PM/PZ) nanofiber membranes with a double-layer structure, interpenetrating structure, or core-shell structure could further enhance the piezoelectric properties of PVDF-based nanofiber membranes through the synergistic effects of filler doping and structural design. In particular, the output voltage of the self-powered friction piezoelectric sensor made of a core-shell PM/PZ nanofiber membrane showed a good linear relationship with the applied pressure and could produce a good piezoelectric response to the bending deformation caused by human motion.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have received extensive attention from researchers due to their wide applications in wearable electronics. Fabricating microstructures is the key to improving the sensing performance of flexible sensors, and the morphology and conductivity of the microstructure has a critical influence on the sensing performance of flexible sensors. In this study, conductive composite films using cellulose nanofiber, carbon nanotubes, and Poly(vinyl alcohol), were fabricated using a pre-stretching method to produce a low-cost, adjustable microstructure morphology of a flexible pressure sensor. The relationship between the morphology and conductivity of the microstructure with the sensing performance of the sensor was revealed. A sensor with the best overall performance was fabricated by regulating the above factors. The sensor exhibits good sensitivity in both the low-pressure range and the medium to high-pressure ranges (S $=$ 67.59 kPa$^{mathbf {-1}}$ over $0-2$ kPa and S $=$ 5.05 kPa$^{mathbf {-1}}$ over $2-20$ kPa), a very low lower detection limit (approximately 6 Pa). In addition, the addition of CNF and PVA gives the conductive microstructure good flexibility, thus resulting in the sensor excellent cycling properties. Finally, the sensor has been shown to detect wrist pulses and limb movements, indicating its potential application in human physiological signal monitoring.
