Abstract:The thermal behavior during operation of Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is widely concerned with respect to their electrochemical performance and safety. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a critical layer formed during electrochemical reactions in LIBs. A thorough understanding of SEI's thermal transport properties is essential to identify limitations within the internal heat transfer of LIBs. In this work, a computational study of the thermal transport through SEI was performed based on classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Three representative inorganic components of SEI, namely Li2CO3, Li2O and LiF, were explored. First, the force fields were evaluated for accurate MD simulations. Subsequently, the impact of structural properties and temperatures on the thermal conductivities of SEI were investigated, followed by discussion on radial distribution functions and vibrational density of states. It was found that the comparison of thermal conductivity of the ordered crystals is Li2O > LiF > Li2CO3. As temperature increases, the thermal conductivity of inorganic components decreases significantly. Additionally, it was discovered that the thermal conductivity of amorphous compounds is notably lower than that of ideal crystals and is closely related to the molar ratio of inorganic components. The results of this work can help understand the thermal transport properties of SEI and offer valuable insights for the design of electrolytes and SEI toward improving the thermal safety performance of LIBs.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium batteries (RLBs) have revolutionized energy storage technology. However, short lifetime and safety issues have hampered their further commercialization, which is mainly attributable to the unstable solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) and uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth. In recent years, research on SEI has been pursued with determination worldwide. However, the structure and composition of the SEI have long been debated. Especially, the role of the main component, LiF, remains elusive. In this review, the structure and composition of SEIs are focused upon and the role of LiF in SEI is further analyzed. To this end, first, the development history of the SEI model is recounted. Second, the fundamental understanding of SEI is recalled. Third, the anode materials that can generate LiF in the SEI are categorized and discussed. Fourth, the characterization techniques of SEI layers are introduced. Fifth, the transport mechanism of Li+ ions within the SEI is discussed. Sixth, the physical properties of LiF are revisited. Seventh, the source of LiF is deeply analyzed. Finally, general conclusions and a perspective on the future research directions for SEI that may promote the large‐scale applications of lithium metal batteries is discussed.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are one of the most promising candidates for next‐generation high‐energy‐density rechargeable batteries. Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li metal anodes plays a significant role in influencing the Li deposition morphology and the cycle life of LMBs. However, a thorough understanding on the mechanisms of SEI formation and evolution is still inadequate. In this review, the progress in understanding structures, properties, and influencing factors of SEI, as well as efficient strategies of tailoring SEI are focused upon. First, the compositions, models, and recent progress in characterizing atomic structures of SEI are summarized. Second, the properties of SEI, including electronic conduction, ionic conduction, stability, and mechanical properties are elucidated. Structures and properties of SEI are greatly affected by multiple factors, thus interactions between these factors and SEI are systematically discussed. Correlations of SEI with Li deposition morphology, rate capability, and cycle life are further summarized. Moreover, efficient strategies of tailoring SEI with desired properties, including in situ SEI and ex situ SEI, are also reviewed. Finally, future directions, including in‐operando techniques, multi‐modality approaches for characterization of SEI, and artificial intelligence assisted understanding of correlations between electrolyte components and SEI properties are proposed.

Abstract:Li metal batteries (LMBs) have long been considered a solution to address the energy density limitations of Li-ion batteries. However, the widespread adoption of LMBs has faced challenges due to operational issues, notably safety concerns arising from the formation of Li dendrites and uncontrolled reactivity at the interfaces, leading to continuous consumption of the electrolyte. To enhance the reversibility of the Li-metal anode (LMA), a promising approach has emerged involving the development of a novel liquid electrolyte comprising an ether solvent and LiFSI salt. Notably, this electrolyte formulation has achieved impressive Coulombic efficiency (CE) values surpassing 99.5%. Despite this progress, the underlying causes of Coulombic inefficiency (CI) and its connection with the formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the Li metal surface remain inadequately understood. Gaining fundamental insights into these essential processes occurring during continuous cycling of the LMA can provide valuable guidance for optimizing CE more effectively. This presentation focuses on recent advancements that systematically unravel the underlying chemistry and formation of SEI derived from FSI anions at the interface of the Li metal anode in contact with various liquid electrolytes. By employing a non-washing protocol and a Cu current collector, we successfully captured and identified crucial reaction intermediates from SEI chemistry, enabling precise determination of the decomposition pathway for FSI anions. Our discoveries unveil a dynamic scenario at the electrode/electrolyte interface, where these reaction byproducts can significantly dissolve into the liquid layer, and their relative solubility dictates their role in passivating the electrode surface. Furthermore, we demonstrate a strong correlation between faster interfacial passivation in higher-performing electrolytes and the reduced solubility of diverse inorganic species within the liquid electrolyte. These fresh insights into SEI chemistry and formation open new avenues for enhancing LMA performance by mitigating undesired side reactions at the interface.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMB) are recognized as the most promising high-energy-density energy storage devices. However, its large-scale commercial applications are seriously hampered by the poor cycling stability and potential safety issues. Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) acts a dominant role in influencing the regulation of Li deposition and overall performance of LMBs, but the composition as well as the evolution of SEI remain quite elusive. Advanced characterization methods and operando monitoring techniques are urgently required. Herein, in this perspective, we first briefly introduce the development history of SEI research and the SEI formation mechanisms as well as the common known components of SEI. Then, we focus on several recent advanced technologies for SEI characterization and monitoring, and the corresponding study cases will be presented. In the end, perspectives including the future investigation directions, the in situ characterization methods, and the component-performance associated model are proposed. We believe that this timely review will help to give a comprehensive understanding on the up-to-date SEI characterization tools.

Abstract:Inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs) have recently attracted tremendous research interest because of their excellent thermal stability and nonflammability. The synthesis methods influence ISEs in the aspect of phase structure, ratio of amorphous phases, strain, defects, grain size, grain boundary resistance, impurities, and morphology, thus critically determining their performance in batteries. However, the relation between the synthesis of ISEs and their performance is complicated and there is no widely applicable synthesis method for all ISEs. To guide those who are deciding on synthesis methods for ISEs, a broad survey is reported in this review. The mechanisms of these synthesis methods are illustrated. Their advantages and disadvantages are sorted. Novel methods up to date, which can intrigue new ideas are also introduced based on our insights into the ISEs.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is vital for tuning the Li deposition/dissolution behavior of Li metal anode (LMA). In this review, developments and the latest research of SEI on LMA along with its compositions and structures for long‐span‐life Li metal batteries are summarized. Further research on understanding SEI for LMA toward practical use are still in demand. Lithium metal anode attracts great attention because of its high specific capacity and low redox potential. However, the uncontrolled dendrite growth and its infinite volume expansion during cycling are extremely detrimental to the practical application. The formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a decisive role in the behavior of lithium deposition/dissolution during electrochemical processing. Clarifying the essential relationship between SEI and battery performance is a priority. Research in SEI is accelerated in recent years by the use of advanced simulation tools and characterization techniques. The chemical composition and micromorphology of SEIs with various electrolytes are analyzed to clarify the effects of SEI on the Coulombic efficiency and cycle life. In this review, the recent research progress focused on the composition and structure of SEI is summarized, and various advanced characterization techniques applied to the investigation of SEI are discussed. The comparisons of the representative experimental results and theoretical models of SEI in lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are exhibited, and the underneath mechanisms of interaction between SEI and the electrochemical properties of the cell are highlighted. This work offers new insights into the development of safe LMBs with higher energy density.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), known as an ionic conductor but electronic insulator, plays a dominant role in cycling stability and safety of rechargeable lithium metal batteries (RLMBs). Although tremendous endeavors have been devoted to identifying the chemical component and spatial distribution of SEI, the linkage between exact nanostructure and its stability still remains to be clarified. In this highly focused research area, plenty of profound papers have been published. However, structural insights, designing guidelines and corresponding stability evaluation approaches of SEI film are still not comprehensively summarized. In this review, we extract major breakthroughs of SEI structure, and then elucidate the mechanism insights of SEI film, including formation mechanism and transportation mechanism of Li+ in the SEI film. Subsequently, we systematically summarize the design principles and strategies for a stable SEI film. Afterwards, we propose general evaluation standards for the stability of SEI film, including chemical/electrochemical methods, atomic-level characterization techniques, and theoretical calculations. Finally, personal perspectives on the construction of stable SEI film are provided at the end of the manuscript. We envision that this timely review can be used as a handy reference for designing stable SEI films with a unique nanostructure and motivate researchers to build better RLMBs.

Abstract:This review summarizes solid electrolyte interphase formation, composition, and reaction mechanisms primarily on graphite anodes, with insights into lithium metal anodes; the influence of electrolyte and electrode materials is discussed. A critical evaluation of the existing problems and a framework for future research directions, including feasible computational, machine learning, and operando experimental approaches are presented. Interfacial dynamics within chemical systems such as electron and ion transport processes have relevance in the rational optimization of electrochemical energy storage materials and devices. Evolving the understanding of fundamental electrochemistry at interfaces would also help in the understanding of relevant phenomena in biological, microbial, pharmaceutical, electronic, and photonic systems. In lithium‐ion batteries, the electrochemical instability of the electrolyte and its ensuing reactive decomposition proceeds at the anode surface within the Helmholtz double layer resulting in a buildup of the reductive products, forming the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). This review summarizes relevant aspects of the SEI including formation, composition, dynamic structure, and reaction mechanisms, focusing primarily on the graphite anode with insights into the lithium metal anode. Furthermore, the influence of the electrolyte and electrode materials on SEI structure and properties is discussed. An update is also presented on state‐of‐the‐art approaches to quantitatively characterize the structure and changing properties of the SEI. Lastly, a framework evaluating the standing problems and future research directions including feasible computational, machine learning, and experimental approaches are outlined.

Abstract:Inorganic components in the solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) on lithium (Li) metal play a critical role in Li metal batteries (LMBs) since the presence of numerous inorganic constituents may promote ion diffusion and mechanical strength. However, manipulating inorganic components and acquiring an in-depth understanding of their roles in LMBs remain challenging. Herein, we deliberately introduce different kinds of inorganic components (e.g., LiF, Li3N, and their complexes) into SEIs on Li metal in LMBs by electrolyte engineering. Through in situ atomic force microscopy and electrochemical experiments, the roles of the specific inorganic component in SEIs played in the process of Li nucleation and evolution are revealed, and the detailed synergistic effect of LiF and Li3N is clarified. We demonstrate that the simultaneous presence of LiF and Li3N in SEIs enables homogeneous and dense lithium metal nucleation and growth, improving both the chemical stability and mechanical strength of SEIs for highly stable LMBs. In contrast, individual LiF and Li3N in SEIs induce needle morphology of Li metal and discrete Li deposition, respectively. These findings can provide rational guidelines for optimizing SEIs through electrolyte engineering for stable LMBs.

Abstract:Accurate understanding of the chemistry of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is key to developing new electrolytes for high-energy batteries using lithium metal (Li 0 ) anodes 1 . SEI is generally believed to be formed by the reactions between Li 0 and electrolyte 2,3 . However, our new study shows this is not the whole story. Through synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis, we reveal a much more convoluted formation mechanism of SEI, which receives considerable contributions from electrolyte, cathode, moisture and native surface species on Li 0 , with highly dynamic nature during cycling. Using isotope labelling, we traced the origin of LiH to electrolyte solvent, moisture and a new source: the native surface species (LiOH) on pristine Li 0 . When lithium accessibility is very limited as in the case of anode-free cells, LiOH develops into plate-shaped large crystals during cycling. Alternatively, when the lithium source is abundant, as in the case of Li||NMC811 cells, LiOH reacts with Li 0 to form LiH and Li 2 O. While the desired anion-derived LiF-rich SEI is typically found in the concentrated electrolytes or their derivatives, we found it can also be formed in low-concentration electrolyte via the crosstalk effect, emphasizing the importance of formation cycle protocol and opening up opportunities for low-cost electrolyte development.

Abstract:Lithium hydride (LiH) has been widely recognized as the critical component of the solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) in Li batteries. Although the formation mechanism and structural model of LiH in SEI have been extensively reported, the role in electro‐performance of LiH in SEI is still ambiguous and has proven challenging to explored due to the complicated structure SEI and the lack of advanced in‐situ experimental technology. In this study, the isotopic exchange experiments combined with isotopic tracer experiments was applied to solidly illustrate the superior conductivity and Li+ conduction behavior of the LiH in natural SEI. Importantly, in‐situ TEM analysis was utilized to visualize the self‐electrochemical decomposition of LiH, which is significantly distinctive from LiF and Li2O. The critical experimental evidence discovered by our work demonstrates ion transport behaviors of key components in the SEI, which is imperative for designing novel SEI and augurs a new area in optimizing the performance of lithium batteries. Abstract:Lithium metal is the ideal candidate to replace conventional carbonaceous anodes due to its high theoretical specific capacity of 3860 mAh/g and low negative thermodynamic potential of -3.040 V vs. SHE [1]. Fine tuning the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is critical for the practical implementation of liquid lithium metal batteries [2]. The presence of particular SEI species are hypothesized to improve the coulombic efficiency and mitigate dendrite formation for enhanced lifetime and safety, respectively [2]. Recently, Zhang et al. developed a novel in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy method to reveal electrolyte oxidation via carbonate dehydrogenation on Ni-based oxides in Li-ion batteries [3]. We leverage this technique and apply it to the Cu side in a Li || Cu battery to probe SEI growth and evolution. In this study, we systematically change the salt, solvent and additive components of the electrolyte and monitor the organic and inorganic SEI species that form under different electrochemical conditions. Furthermore, we directly correlate the chemical composition of the SEI to cell-level coulombic efficiency [4]. Complimentary characterization techniques will be used to further resolve the chemical structure of the SEI. Abstract:Solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is the key component that enables all advanced electrochemical devices, the best representative of which is Li-ion battery (LIB). It kinetically stabilizes electrolytes at potentials far beyond their thermodynamic stability limits, so that cell reactions could proceed reversibly. Its ad hoc chemistry and formation mechanism has been a topic under intensive investigation since the first commercialization of LIB 25 years ago. Traditionally SEI can only be formed in nonaqueous electrolytes. However, recent efforts successfully transplanted this concept into aqueous media, leading to significant expansion in the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes from 1.23 V to beyond 4.0 V. This not only made it possible to construct a series of high voltage/energy density aqueous LIBs with unprecedented safety, but also brought high flexibility and even "open configurations" that have been hitherto unavailable for any LIB chemistries. While this new class of aqueous electrolytes has been successfully demonstrated to support diversified battery chemistries, the chemistry and formation mechanism of the key component, an aqueous SEI, has remained virtually unknown. In this work, combining various spectroscopic, electrochemical and computational techniques, we rigorously examined this new interphase, and comprehensively characterized its chemical composition, microstructure and stability in battery environment. A dynamic picture obtained reveals how a dense and protective interphase forms on anode surface under competitive decompositions of salt anion, dissolved ambient gases and water molecule. By establishing basic laws governing the successful formation of an aqueous SEI, the in-depth understanding presented in this work will assist the efforts in tailor-designing better interphases that enable more energetic chemistries operating farther away from equilibria in aqueous media.

Abstract:The solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) is probably the least understood component in Li-ion batteries. Considerable effort has been put into understanding its formation and electrochemistry under realistic battery conditions, but mechanistic insights have mostly been inferred indirectly. Here we show the formation of the SEI between a graphite anode and a carbonate electrolyte through combined atomic-scale microscopy and in situ and operando techniques. In particular, we weigh the graphitic anode during its initial lithiation process with an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, which unequivocally identifies lithium fluoride and lithium alkylcarbonates as the main chemical components at different potentials. In situ gas analysis confirms the preferential reduction of cyclic over acyclic carbonate molecules, making its reduction product the major component in the SEI. We find that SEI formation starts at graphite edge sites with dimerization of solvated Li + intercalation between graphite layers. We also show that this lithium salt, at least in its nascent form, can be re-oxidized, despite the general belief that an SEI is electrochemically inert and its formation irreversible.

Abstract:The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is regarded as the most complex but the least understood constituent in secondary batteries using liquid and solid electrolytes. The dearth of such knowledge in all-solid-state battery (ASSB) has hindered a complete understanding of how certain solid-state electrolytes, such as LiPON, manifest exemplary stability against lithium metal. By employing cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), the interphase between lithium metal and LiPON is successfully preserved and probed, revealing a multilayer-mosaic SEI structure with concentration gradients of nitrogen and phosphorus, materializing as crystallites within an amorphous matrix. This unique SEI nanostructure is less than 80 nm and is stable and free of any organic lithium-containing species or lithium fluoride components, in contrast to SEIs often found in state-of-the-art organic liquid electrolytes. Our findings reveal insights on the nanostructures and chemistry of such SEIs as a key component in lithium metal batteries to stabilize lithium metal anode.

Abstract:The formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and ion intercalation are two key processes in rechargeable batteries, which need to be explored under dynamic operating conditions. In this work, both planar and sandwich model lithium batteries consisting of Li metal | ionic liquid electrolyte | graphite electrode have been constructed and investigated by a series of in situ surface analysis platforms including atomic force microscopy, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is found that the choice of electrolyte, including the concentration and contents, has a profound effect on the SEI formation and evolution, and the subsequent ion intercalation. A smooth and compact SEI is preferably produced in high-concentration electrolytes, with FSI− salt superior to TFSI− salt, facilitating the lithiation/delithiation to achieve high capacity and excellent cycle stability, while suppressing the co-intercalation of electrolyte solvent ions. The innovative research scenario of well-defined model batteries in combination with multiple genuinely in situ surface analysis methods presented herein leads to insightful results, which provide valuable strategies for the rational design and optimization of practical batteries, and energy storage devices in general.

Abstract:Highly safe and efficient rechargeable lithium batteries have become an indispensable component of the intelligent society powering smart electronics and electric vehicles. This review summarizes the formation principle, chemical compositions, and theoretical models of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the anode in the lithium battery, involving the functions and influences of the electroactive materials. The discrepancies of the SEI on different kinds of anode materials, as well as the choice and design of the electrolytes are detailedly clarified. Furthermore, the design strategies to obtain a stable and efficient SEI are outlined and discussed. Last but not least, the challenges and perspectives of artificial SEI technology are briefly proposed for the development of high-efficiency batteries in practice.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal battery is regarded as a high-energy-density battery system beyond Li-ion battery. However, the cycle life of Li metal batteries with liquid electrolytes is severely hindered by the high reactivity and non-uniform plating/stripping behaviors of Li metal anodes. The plating/stripping behaviors of Li metal anodes are mainly dictated by the transport mechanism of Li ions in solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), a nanoscale passivation film between the anode and electrolytes. SEI is composed of various inorganic and organic components and has a diversiform structure, which complicates the transport behaviors of Li ions in it and differentiates the Li-ion transport mechanism in SEI from that in common liquid and solid electrolytes. Therefore, understanding the transport mechanism of Li ions in SEI is imperative for rationally regulating SEI components and structure and enabling uniform Li plating/stripping behaviors. In this review, the recent progress in understanding the Li-ion transport mechanism in SEI in Li metal batteries with liquid electrolytes is summarized, including the detailed transport mechanisms of Li ions in SEI, and the methods to investigate and regulate the Li-ion transport mechanism in SEI. In particular, an insightful outlook is provided to guide future research on investigating the transport mechanism of Li ions in SEI.
