Abstract:Abrupt changes in climatic conditions, exploitation of natural resources, and land degradation exacerbate soil erosion. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of soil erosion dynamics in Pakistan for 2005 and 2015 at 1 km2 spatial resolution using six influencing factors: rainfall erosivity (R), soil erodibility (K), slope‐length (L), slope‐steepness (S), cover management (C), and conservation practice (P). The well‐accepted revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) was implemented to estimate soil erosion. The soil erosion maps were categorized into four classes: low (<1), medium (1–5), high (5–20), and very high (>20) — and transitions among these classes were determined by applying the change matrix method to assess soil erosion (ton ha‐1 yr‐1) changes from 2005 to 2015. Furthermore, spatial patterns and soil erosion dynamics were evaluated for seven administrative units of Pakistan to examine conservation efforts and ecosystem services. Major findings of this study indicate, that at the national scale, an estimated soil erosion of 1.79 ± 11.52 ton ha‐1 yr‐1 in 2005, which increased to 2.47 ± 18.14 ton ha‐1 yr‐1 in 2015. This intensification of soil erosion is coupled with land cover and land use changes (LCLUC) due to population expansion, infrastructural development, and exploitation of natural resources. This study's analytical framework and outcomes could be used for developing effective conservation policies to control soil erosion at various spatial scales in Pakistan.

Abstract:The watershed area of the Mangla Reservoir spans across the Himalayan region of India and Pakistan, primarily consisting of the Jhelum River basin. The area is rugged with highly elevated, hilly terrain and relatively thin vegetation cover, which significantly increases the river’s sediment output, especially during the monsoon season, leading to a decline in the reservoir’s storage capacity. This work assesses the soil erosion risk in the Jhelum River watershed (Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K), Pakistan) using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation of (RUSLE). The RUSLE components, including the conservation support or erosion control practice factor (P), soil erodibility factor (K), slope length and slope steepness factor (LS), rainfall erosivity factor (R), and crop cover factor (C), were integrated to compute soil erosion. Soil erosion risk and intensity maps were generated by computing the RUSLE parameters, which were then integrated with physical factors such as terrain units, elevation, slope, and land uses/cover to examine how these factors affect the spatial patterns of soil erosion loss. The 2021 rainfall data were utilized to compute the rainfall erosivity factor (R), and the soil erodibility (K) map was created using the world surface soil map prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The slope length and slope steepness factor (LS) were generated in the highly rough terrain using Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM DEM). The analysis revealed that the primary land use in the watershed was cultivated land, accounting for 27% of the area, and slopes of 30% or higher were present across two-thirds of the watershed. By multiplying the five variables, the study determined that the annual average soil loss was 23.47 t ha−1 yr−1. In areas with dense mixed forest cover, soil erosion rates ranged from 0.23 t ha−1 yr−1 to 25 t ha−1 yr−1. The findings indicated that 55.18% of the research area has a low erosion risk, 18.62% has a medium erosion risk, 13.66% has a high risk, and 11.6% has a very high erosion risk. The study’s findings will provide guidelines to policy/decision makers for better management of the Mangla watershed.

Abstract:Soil erosion is one of the major environmental threats in Bangladesh, especially in the tertiary hilly regions located in the northeastern and southeastern parts of the country. The revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE), combined with Geographic Information System, is a reliable methodology to estimate the potential soil loss in an area. This research aimed to use the RUSLE model to estimate the soil erosion in the tertiary hill tracts of Bangladesh from 2017 to 2021. The erosivity factor was determined from the annual average precipitation, and erodibility factor was estimated from FAO soil database. The elevation model was used to analyze slope length steepness factors, while land use land cover was used to compute cover management factor. Lastly, land use and elevation were integrated to estimate the support practice factor. Results revealed that the potential mean annual soil loss in 2017, 2019, and 2021 was 68.77, 69.84, and 83.7 ton ha −1 year −1 from northeastern and 101.72, 107.83, and 114.04 ton ha −1 year −1 from southeastern region, respectively. Although total annual rainfall was high in 2017, soil loss was found higher in 2021 which indicates the impact of land use change on erosion. This investigation will help the policymakers to identify the erosion-vulnerable areas in the hill tracts that require immediate soil conservation practices. Additionally, there is no latest field-based data available for the country for the validation, and hence, it is recommended to conduct field-based studies for validating the model-derived results and creating a reliable soil erosion database for the country.

Abstract:The Urpash watershed located in the Lesser Himalayas (India) has experienced substantial soil erosion challenges. Therefore, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model, integrated within a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment, was employed to evaluate the spatial distribution of erosion within the Urpash watershed. To execute the model, inputs such as ASTER DEM, annual rainfall data for the year 2019, Land Use Land Cover (LULC) maps, and soil texture data were utilized as data sources. The average annual soil loss across the Urpash watershed ranged from 0 to 193.15 t/ha/year, with the mean annual loss estimated at 22.46 t/ha/year. Zonal statistical analysis revealed that barren land and open forests were more susceptible to erosion, with estimates of 86.22 and 68.46 t/ha/year, respectively. In contrast, waterbodies, built-up areas, and evergreen forests exhibited lower erosion susceptibility. Based on soil loss values, the watershed was categorized into six sub-watersheds. WS 6 and WS 3 were identified with severe soil erosion (40–80 t/ha/year), WS 2 with very high (20–40 t/ha/year), WS 5 with high erosion (10–20 t/ha/year) and WS 1 and WS 4 with moderate erosion. (5–10 t/ha/year). Thus, the sub-watershed priority was in the order of WS 6 > WS 3 > WS 2 > WS 5 > WS 4 > WS 1 . Our findings indicated that regions with high slope gradients and barren land were hotspots for severe and very severe erosion. While acknowledging the existence of other factors such as soil type, intensity of rainfall, land cover, and land practices, the study found their impact to be comparatively less pronounced than the dominant roles played by high-slope areas and barren lands. The severity data from sub-watersheds can inform targeted conservation strategies to combat soil erosion effectively within the Urpash watershed.

Abstract:As a form of environmental degradation, soil degradation directly or indirectly affects many lives through decreased agricultural yields, increased flooding and habitat loss. Soil loss has been increasing in most parts of the world and is most pronounced in tropical developing countries where there is poor or zero soil and water conservation (SWC) planning and management activities. Identifying areas prone to soil erosion has also been inadequate, having not been informed by dedicated scientific studies. This is true of the poorly understood watershed of Welmel in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, where most livelihoods heavily rely upon agriculture. To plan effective SWC management techniques, a solid knowledge of spatial variations across different climate, land use and soil erosion is essential. This study has aimed at identifying potential areas needing SWC practices through conducting a spatial modeling of soil erosion within the Welmel watershed’s Genale Dawa basin using a geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing (RS), multiple factors as land uses and climate. The Welmel catchment is located in southeastern Ethiopia and extends between 5°0′0′′ N–7°45′00′′ N and 39°0′0′′ E–41°15′0′′ E. The revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE), which was previously adapted to Ethiopian conditions, was used to estimate potential soil loss. It used information on interpolated rainfall erosivity (R), soil erodibility (K), vegetation cover (C) and topography (LS) from a digital elevation model (DEM) and that of conservation practices (P) from satellite images. The study demonstrates that the RUSLE using GIS and RS considering different climates and land management practices provides a great advantage in that it allows one to spatially analyze multilayer data in order to identify soil erosion-prone areas and thereby develop the most appropriate watershed management strategy. The mean soil loss was determined to be 31 tons ha−1 year−1 and it varied between 0 and 169 tons ha−1 year−1. About 79% of the watershed lies within the tolerable level of 11 tons ha−1 year−1. However, the remaining 21% has a high soil truncation trait, mainly due to its steeper slope and use as cultivated land. Our study identifies cultivated and deforested areas of the watershed as the potential SWC practice demanding areas. Thus, the application of RUSEL using GIS across different land management practices and climate zones is a potential tool for identifying SWC demanding sites. This remains helpful in efforts towards sustainable land management practices for the sustainable livelihood of the local human population.
Empirical Modeling of Soil Loss and Yield Utilizing RUSLE and SYI: A Geospatial Study in South Sikkim, Teesta Basin

Abstract:Soil erosion and subsequent sedimentation pose significant challenges in the Sikkim Himalayas. In this study, we conducted an assessment of the impact of rainfall-induced soil erosion and sediment loss in South Sikkim, which falls within the Teesta Basin, employing Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and Sediment Yield Index (SYI) models. Leveraging mean annual precipitation data, a detailed soil map, geomorphological landforms, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), and LANDSAT 8 OLI data were used to prepare the factorial maps of South Sikkim. The results of the RUSLE and SYI models revealed annual soil loss >200 t ha−1 yr−1, whereas mean values were estimated to be 93.42 t ha−1 yr−1 and 70.3 t ha−1 yr−1, respectively. Interestingly, both models displayed similar degrees of soil loss in corresponding regions under the various severity classes. Notably, low-severity erosion 200 t ha−1 yr−1were concentrated in the upper reaches, characterized by steep slopes. These findings underscore the strong correlation between erosion rates and topography, which makes the region highly vulnerable to erosion. The prioritization of such regions and potential conservation methods need to be adopted to protect such precious natural resources in mountainous regions.

Abstract:Soil is the earth’s fragile skin that anchors all life on earth. Half of the topsoil on the planet has been lost in the last 150 years. Land degradation due to soil loss is one of the major environmental concerns which can be influences by the natural as well as anthropogenic activities. These impacts include compaction, loss of soil structure, nutrient degradation, and soil salinity. The effects of soil erosion go beyond the loss of fertile land. It has led to increased pollution and sedimentation in streams and rivers. And degraded lands are also often less able to hold onto water which can worsen flooding. Revised Universal soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model and integration with Geographical Information System (GIS) have been taken into consideration for estimating the average annual soil loss in Arkosa watershed. The Overlay Analysis technique have been adopted in RUSLE model for estimating the influences of different factors namely rainfall and runoff erosivity factor (R), soil erodibility factor (K), slope length and steepness factor (LS), cover and management factor (C) and support practice factor (P) etc. The average annual soil loss of Arkosa watershed ranged between 0 to 10 tons/ha/year. Here the combined index method has been adopted to show the impact spatially of combine index of these five factors, i.e., R, K, LS, C and P. Apart from this there are total 29 points have been selected randomly for securing that the present soil loss model sounded with ground reality or not. The actual soil loss and predicted soil loss show the positive relationship with them in an r2 value of 0.882. Besides this the present study provides a reliable prediction for future on potential soil erosion risk zones which ranged between 0 and 16 tons/ha/year. To overcome from extreme or severe soil loss situation suitable soil conservation practices or support practices have to be taken care off for minimizing the erosion of the fertile soil or the top soil for making the region less vulnerable from soil erosion in present rate. Sustainable land use can help to reduce the impact of agriculture and livestock, preventing the soil degradation and erosion and the loss of valuable land to deforestation.

Abstract:Erosion of soil by water coupled with human activities is considered as one of the most serious agents of land degradation, posing severe threat to agricultural productivity, soil health, water quality, and ecological setup. The assessment of soil erosion and recognition of problematic watersheds are pre-requisite for management of erosion hazards. In the present study, Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) integrated with remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) has been used to assess the soil erosion in lower Sutlej River basin of Punjab, India, and prioritize the watersheds for implementation of land and water conservation measures. The total basin area was about 8577 km 2 which was divided into 14 sub-watersheds with the area ranging from 357.8 to 1354 km 2 . The data on rainfall (IMD gridded data), soil characteristics (FAO soil map), topography (ALOS PALSAR DEM) and land use (ESRI land use and land cover map) were prepared in the form of raster layers and overlaid together to determine the average annual soil loss. The results revealed that the average annual soil loss varied from 1.26 to 25 t ha −1 , whereas total soil loss was estimated to be 2,441,639 tonnes. The spatial distribution map of soil erosion showed that about 94.4% and 4.7% of the total area suffered from very slight erosion (0–5 t ha −1 year −1 ) and slight erosion (5–10 t ha −1 year −1 ), respectively, whereas 0.11% (9.38 km 2 ) experienced very severe soil loss (> 25 t ha −1 year −1 ). Based on estimated average annual soil loss of sub-watersheds, WS8 was assigned the highest priority for implementation of soil and water conservation measures (323.5 t ha −1 year −1 ), followed by WS9 (303.8 t ha −1 year −1 ), whereas WS2 was given last priority owing to its lowest value of soil loss (122.02 t ha −1 year −1 ). The present study urges that conservation strategies should be carried out in accordance with the priority ranking of diverse watersheds. These findings can certainly be used to implement soil conservation plans and management practices in order to diminish soil loss in the river basin.

Abstract:Soil erosion has resulted in removal of the topsoils containing fine soil particles and plant nutrients, causing decrease in soil fertility in the Hindu Kush, Karakoram and Himalaya (HKH) region. The existing production of cereal crop grains has been reduced to one third of the potential crop grains production owing to land degradation and poor farming practices. It is necessary to assess risk of soil loss and identify appropriate controlling measures to address issues of low agriculture productivity and water insecurity in the region. In the present study, severity of soil loss was predicted using Revised Universal Loss Equation (RUSLE) and ecological measures were identified for sustainable mountain agriculture in the HKH region of Upper Indus Basin, Pakistan. Overall 62.6% area was found to have very low risk of soil loss, i.e., 100 t/(ha·yr) in about 6.8% and 7.4% areas respectively. The mean rate of soil loss was about 41.9 t/(ha·yr) in the Hindu Kush, 31.1 t/(ha·yr) in the Himalayas, 18.8 t/(ha·yr) in the Karakoram and overall 29.7 t/(ha·yr) in the three HKH ranges. As such no considerable measures have been adopted by the communities for restoration of the degraded areas except raising fruit/farm trees and supporting limited social forestry for their livelihoods. The slopes cleared for cultivation and susceptible to erosion may be stabilized through sowing/planting of multi-purpose plant species and formation of proper bench terraces. The conservation of forest ecosystem and pastures at higher elevations would help in reducing overland water flow, risk of flash flood hazard and minimizing sediment loads in the downstream. It is essential to adopt site-specific resource conservation techniques and restore possible ecosystem health for sustainable agriculture and economic development in the region in future.

Impacts of Land Use Conversion on Soil Erosion in the Urban Agglomeration on the Northern Slopes of the Tianshan Mountains

Abstract:The serious problem of soil erosion not only has a profound impact on people's lives but also results in a series of ecological and environmental challenges. To determine the impact of changes in land use type on soil erosion in the urban agglomeration on the northern slopes of the Tianshan Mountains, this study commences by employing the InVEST-SDR (integrated valuation of ecosystem services and tradeoffs–sediment delivery ratio) model to calculate soil erosion levels spanning from 2000 to 2020. Subsequently, it forecasts land use and land cover (LULC) conditions for the year 2030 under three scenarios: Q1 (natural development), Q2 (ecological protection), and Q3 (economic priority). This projection is accomplished through the integration of a coupled Markov chain and multi-objective planning model (MOP) alongside patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) models. Ultimately, based on these outcomes, the study predicts soil erosion levels for the year 2030. There has been a consistent decline in soil erosion from 2000 to 2020 with high-intensity erosion concentrated in the Tianshan Mountain region. Grasslands, glaciers, and permafrost are identified as the most erosion-prone land types in the study area, with forests exhibiting the highest capacity for soil retention. Converting from grassland and barren land to forest within the same area results in a substantial reduction in soil erosion, specifically by 27.3% and 46.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the transformation from barren land to grassland also leads to a noteworthy 19% decrease in soil erosion. Over the past two decades, the study area has witnessed a significant decline in the area of grasslands, with a notable shift towards barren and impervious surfaces due to economic development and mining activities. The three predicted scenarios depict significant expansion towards barren land, grassland, and impervious area, respectively. Soil erosion decreases under different shared socio-economic pathway (SSP) scenarios relative to 2020. There is an increase in soil erosion in the Q1 scenario and in the Q3 scenario, whereas the amount of soil erosion in the Q2 scenario exhibits a continued decrease when only the effect of land change on soil erosion is considered. Persistently rapid economic development can exacerbate soil erosion problems, underscoring the need to find a balance between economic growth and ecological conservation. As economic expansion slows down, greater emphasis should be placed on environmental protection to maintain ecological stability.

Abstract:Abstract Background Soil erosion causes topsoil loss, which decreases fertility in agricultural land. Spatial estimation of soil erosion essential for an agriculture-dependent country like Nepal for developing its control plans. This study evaluated impacts on Dolakha using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model; analyses the effect of land use and land cover (LULC) on soil erosion. Results The soil erosion rate categorized into six classes based on the erosion severity, and 5.01% of the areas found under extreme severe erosion risk (> 80 Mg ha −1 year −1 ) addressed by decision-makers for reducing its rate and consequences. Followed by 10% classified between high and severe range from 10 to 80 Mg ha −1 year −1 . While 15% and 70% of areas remained in a moderate and low-risk zone, respectively. Result suggests the area of the north-eastern part suffers from a high soil erosion risk due to steep slope. Conclusions The result produces a spatial distribution of soil erosion over Dolakha, which applied for conservation and management planning processes, at the policy level, by land-use planners and decision-makers.

Abstract:Soil loss due to erosion has a huge impact on worldwide economy and environment. The Himalayan region is extremely vulnerable to erosion due to rugged terrain, erratic precipitation and excessive anthropogenic pressures. This study attempts to assess the spatial distribution of soil loss for managing soil disintegration rates in the western Himalayas using a GIS modeling approach. Factors affecting soil erosion were assessed and mapped using primary data from the field and secondary data. Map layers were developed for each identified factors and modeled using weighted overlay analysis. The rainfall-runoff erosivity, soil erodibility, topographic, cover management and support parameters varied around 361.75 MJ mm/ha/h/yr, (0.024–0.051) t ha h/ha/MJ/mm, 0–585.372, 0–1 and 0–1 respectively. The yearly soil disintegration rate varied between 0 and 6098.44 t ha/yr. The maximum area (137,165.30 ha) of the district's total area (146,295.142 ha) was under the less vulnerable class and the minimum (259.92 ha) was under the severely vulnerable category. The findings reported 70.24% of the area was under the less vulnerable class, followed by extremely vulnerable (10.48%) > highly vulnerable (7.40%) > severely vulnerable (7.19%) > moderately vulnerable (4.69%). The maximum (810 t/ha) and minimum (15 t/ha) mean soil loss was found under severely vulnerable and less vulnerable categories. The findings will provide site specific data regarding soil loss and vulnerability for effective management of soils in the eco-sensitive region.

Abstract:Soil erosion is a significant problem in the agriculture sector and the environment globally. Susceptible soil erosion zones must be identified and erosion rates evaluated to decrease land degradation problems and increase crop productivity by protecting soil fertility. Therefore, a research study has been carried out in the Ponnaniyar River basin, an ungauged tributary of the Cauvery basin in India, primarily used for agriculture. The main purpose of this study is to assess soil erosion (SE) and sediment yield (SY) for the future in an ungauged basin by utilizing the projected land use/land cover (LULC) map of the study area. Additionally, Landsat 8 satellite dataset was only used for the classification and prediction of LULC to eliminate the variation between the resolution, bands and its wavelength of different satellites datasets. To achieve the goals of this study, three phases were followed. First, the LULC of the study area was classified using a Random Trees Classifier (RTC), a machine learning technique, followed by the projection of land cover using a Cellular Automata-based Artificial Neural Network (CA-ANN) model. The driving factors for this model include digital elevation model (DEM), slope, distance to roads, settlements, and water bodies. The accuracy level of the projected LULC map was determined by comparing it with the classified LULC map of the study area, and the results showed an overall accuracy (OA) of 85.35 percentage and a kappa coefficient (K) of 0.74, respectively. Second, the projected LULC map was used in the land management factor (C) and conversation practice factor (P) of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model to assess soil erosion. The model was integrated with the sediment delivery ratio (SDR) to estimate sediment yield within the study area. The accuracy of the generated erosion map based on the classified and projected LULC for the year 2022 was determined using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) curve, and it was found to be in satisfactory agreement. Finally, for effective soil and water conservation measures, the basin was divided into 13 sub-watersheds (SWs) using terrain analysis in geographical information system (GIS). The SWs were prioritized based on the mean soil loss in the 4-year interval from 2014 to 2030 and integrated using the weighted average method to determine the final prioritization. From these findings, SW 11, SW 9, SW 12, and SW 1 are extremely affected by soil erosion, and immediate implementation of water harvesting structures is required for soil conservation. Also, this research might be useful for decision-makers and policymakers in land management.
Estimating the Soil Erosion Response to Land-Use Land-Cover Change Using GIS-Based RUSLE and Remote Sensing: A Case Study of Miyun Reservoir, North China

Abstract:Soil erosion by water is a major cause of land degradation. Agricultural practices and many other ecological environmental problems contribute to land degradation worldwide, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. Miyun County, which is located in a mountainous region of North China, is an important natural ecological zone and surface source of drinking water for Beijing and is very vulnerable to soil erosion due to its thin soil layer and human activities. Landsat images from 2003 and 2013 were used to analyze the land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) over this period. The revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) model integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to quantify soil loss and to map erosion risk. In addition, the response of soil erosion to LULCC was evaluated. The results showed that the areas under cropland, forest, and water bodies increased over the study period by 66.03, 243.44, and 9.01 km2, respectively. The increase in forested land indicated that the improved ground vegetation cover was due to the implementation of active ecological measures. Between 2003 and 2013, light soil erosion increased by 587.46 km2, and extremely severe soil erosion increased by 9.57 km2. The extents of slight, moderate, severe, and very severe soil erosion, however, decreased by 8.02, 445.21, 142.69, and 1.11 km2, respectively. A total of 57.5% of land with moderate soil erosion has been converted to light soil erosion, which could be highly beneficial for the improvement of vegetation control of soil and water losses. In terms of area, forestland exhibited the greatest increase, while moderate soil erosion exhibited the greatest decrease over the study period. Land-use change led to an alteration in the intensity of soil erosion due to changes or loss of vegetation. The conversion from high intensity soil erosion to low intensity was attributed to the implementation of ecological environmental protection. The results generated from this study may be useful for planners and land-use managers to make appropriate decisions for soil conservation.

Abstract:The combined impacts of land use/land cover (LULC) changes and climate change are significantly affecting soil and water ecologies, calling for proper natural resource management. The aims of this study were to assess the LULC dynamics between 1987 and 2050 and estimate the impact of LULC and climate changes (under two climate scenarios (RCP4.5 & RCP8.5)) on soil erosion rate in Sile watershed, Ethiopian rift valley lakes basin (ERVLB). A supervised method with maximum likelihood classification was applied in the ERDAS Imagine software for assessing the LULC of 1987, 2003, and 2020. A classified past LULC map serves as a baseline to predict 2050 LULC by considering different driver variables using Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network and Cellular Automata-Markov Chain Model integrated with TerrSet software. A revised universal soil loss equation model (RUSLE) has been used to compute an input parameter in ArcGIS to estimate the rate of soil loss. The input parameters were erosivity (R-factor), soil erodibility (K-factor), topography (LS-factor), conservation practice (P-factor), and cover (C-factor). The findings revealed that with the business-as-usual scenario, the substantial LULC alteration will be prolonged over the coming several years. The average soil loss under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios with a future 2050 LULC was predicted to be 56.48 t-ha −1 year −1 and 57.11 t-ha −1 year −1 and then it will be expected to increase 36.40% and 38.19%, respectively. In order to sustainably manage the natural resources, interventions in prioritized sub-watersheds have been suggested at present and for the future. Additionally, it needs ecological sound conservation policies and strategies to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change on soil erosion.

Abstract:Soil erosion by water and wind is among the most crucial land degradation processes in Ethiopia. This is also the case for Alage watershed located in the cental Rift Valley system. This study aimed at assessment of soil erosion hazard and its relation to land use land cover change in the watershed during the period from 1984 to 2016 for a better land management. The study is based on application of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) to extract inputs factor values for the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). Time-series satellite imageries of Landsat TM 1984, ETM+ 2000 and OLI 2016 were used for land use land cover change detection and determination of cover management (C) factor of the RUSLE. Biophysical data such as rainfall, soil properties, land management practices including soil and water conservation measures within the watershed were collected using field survey and secondary data sources. Slope steepness and slope length factors were derived using Digital Elevaition Model (DEM). Long-term average annual soil loss rates were estimated by the RUSLE integrated with GIS for 1984, 2000 and 2016. Using satellite imageries, the land use land cover and changes within the watershed during the three periods were obtained through a supervised classification with maximum likelihood algorithim. The results of land use land cover change indicated that the proportion of rain-fed cropland, bare land and built up areas increased by 17.4%, 5.9% and 2.9% respectively over the three study period. In contrast the proportion of bush/shrub land, irrigated cropland, grass land, forested areas and waterbodies decresaed by 15.5%, 4.7%, 3.4%, 2.3% and 0.3% respectively during the same period. Estimated average annual soil loss rates showed an increasing trend from 24.3 ton ha-1 yr-1 in 1984 to 38 ton ha-1 yr-1 in 2016. Increasing trends of average annual soil loss rate is attributed to increased proportion of cropland, bare land and built up areas during those periods leading to decreased protective vegetation cover. Hotspot areas within the watershed require implementation of land management practices to prevent further degradation and expansion of gullies. This study is relevant to demonstrate environmental implication of land use land cover change for future land management practices and land use policy in the Rift Valley of central Ethiopia.

Abstract:Soil erosion is a significant form of land degradation worldwide, leading to ecological degradation and a decline in agricultural productivity. The middle section of the northern slopes of Tianshan Mountain (MNSTM) in northwestern China is a high-priority area for soil water erosion prevention, and soil water erosion is a serious problem in the region. Despite this, there is a lack of research on soil water erosion in the MNSTM, and the trends and priority risk areas of soil water erosion remain unclear. Therefore, this study used the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) to quantitatively assess soil water erosion from 2001–2020 and predict it from 2030–2050. The study also used the Geodetector method to analyse the influencing factors of soil water erosion in the region. The results show that soil water erosion in the MNSTM has a fluctuating upward trend, increasing at a rate of 0.26 t hm−2 y−1 over the period 2001–2020 and reaching a maximum value of 39.08 t hm−2 in 2020. However, soil water erosion in the region is mitigated under both RCP2.6 and RCP4.5 climate scenarios. Vegetation was found to have the highest degree of influence on soil erosion, indicating that its protection and management should be prioritised for future soil and water conservation efforts. The eastern part of the MNSTM was identified as the most vulnerable area to soil and water erosion, and in the context of global climate change, it is crucial to enhance the ecological restoration of the MNSTM to reduce the risk of soil water erosion. These findings can serve as valuable information for decision makers to develop effective strategies to prevent soil erosion and improve the ecological environment in the MNSTM.

Abstract:Soil erosion is still a vector of environmental and economic concern affecting most parts of the world, especially in Sub-Saharan African countries. Nevertheless, recent human activities in the hills, coupled with poor conservation measures and practices, could have amplified the rate at which soil is lost in the southwestern highlands of Ethiopia. This study focuses on quantifying and prioritizing micro-watersheds that require conservation actions by piloting spatial modeling of soil loss in the upper Bilate watershed. Sentinel image, soil, DEM, rainfall, and support practice data were used. A Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) using GIS and satellite images was applied. The estimated average annual soil loss rate was demonstrated to be 24.1 t ha −1 yr −1 and varied between 0.05 and 498.24 t ha −1 yr −1 . About 51.2% of the total revealed has a high soil truncation trait, of which 40% of the cropland has exceeded the soil loss tolerances of Ethiopia and tropical regions. The most affected micro-watersheds are MWS 16, 8, 6, and 3, which contributed 39.4% of the average annual loss rate, indicating the hotspots of soil loss problems in the region. This will have far-reaching off-site impacts on food security, soil productivity, human lives, infrastructures, and ecosystem service provisions.

Abstract:Recognizing soil as a vital resource for food production and animal habitat, this study employed a comprehensive, nationwide erosion assessment in Bangladesh using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model. Rainfall, soil data, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Landsat 8 imagery, and land use and land cover (LULC) maps were employed as inputs for the prediction of potential soil erosion. Utilizing the zonal statistics tool within a geographic information system (GIS) platform, the study area's most erosion-vulnerable zones were subsequently identified and mapped. These zones were designated as 'erosion hotspots' (EHs) with demonstrably clear connections to river basins and networks. Analysis revealed an annual average erosion rate of 1.3 t ha −1 yr −1 , resulting in an alarming loss of 17.68 million tons of topsoil annually. Notably, four distinct EHs were identified within the study area. The southeast region, due to its specific topography and climate, was found to be highly susceptible to erosion. Within this region, 2.22% (2995.93 km 2 ) experience erosion exceeding 10.0 t ha −1 yr −1 . RUSLE-based results were validated by comparison with outputs from the Global Soil Erosion Modeling Platform (GloSEM) and Google Earth imagery. In addition, the model's performance was evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the ROC curve (AUC). The high AUC value of 0.94 achieved in this study reinforces the accuracy and confidence of the soil erosion estimations.

Abstract:Changes in forest cover are closely associated with the variability in meteorological and hydrological variables. Therefore, this study delves into investigating how forest cover changes impact the environment (i.e., hydrometeorological variables, including precipitation, streamflow, relative humidity (RH), evapotranspiration (ET), and temperature) using Trend Projection (TP) methods during 1980-2019. The study is carried out in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province of Pakistan, which witnessed deforestation between 1980 and 2010 followed by afforestation (through billion tree tsunami project, BTTP) initiated in 2014. A new drought index, named as agrometeorological drought index (AMDI), is developed in this study using the remotely sensed data to analyze the impact of forest cover on drought severity. The robust least square regression (RLSR) model is used to regress the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) with AMDI at various time scales to investigate the impact of forest cover on drought severity. The RLSR and paired t-test are used to quantify the impact of forest cover and BTTP, in particular, on the environment. Land use maps prepared for KP province over a span of the past four decades revealed significant deforestation during 1985-2005, transitioning gradually to afforestation in the past decade. Results indicated a decline in streamflow throughout different seasons with an increase in forest cover, particularly during the period of afforestation (i.e., 2015-2019). The precipitation, RH (maximum/minimum), and ET displayed an increasing trend over time, whereas a decrease trend is observed in Tmax/Tmin and streamflow at most of the stations. The trend analyses depicted a significant change before and after the BTTP. The paired t-test results revealed that BTTP has statistically significant impact on the environmental variables. Furthermore, the time series plots of AMDI at different time scales indicated that drought events were frequent and severe prior to 2003, whereas significant decrease in both the frequency and severity of drought was observed in the last decade (2010-2019). The RLSR results at pixel scales demonstrated the crucial role of forest covers in alleviating both the frequency and severity of drought events. The elasticities revealed that increase in the forest cover resulted in substantial increase/decrease in each hydro-meteorological variable. Overall, the results highlighted a positive and statistically significant impact of forest cover (i.e., BTTP) on both the environment and drought variability.
