Abstract:As a global pollution problem, heavy metal contamination poses a serious hazard to soil microorganisms which play an extremely important role in soil chemical cycling and ecological persistence. However, the effects that different levels of heavy metal contamination in soils have on microorganisms and the interactions between them are still unclear. The purpose of this research is to analyze the microbial structure under different levels of heavy metal contamination, find out heavy metal tolerant species under different environmental conditions, then provide useful reference for the bioremediation of contaminated farmland. In this study, 16s rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology was used to investigate the microbial communities in severe level (SL), moderate level (ML), light level (LL) and clean level (CL) of heavy metal contaminated soils, and the relationships between environment variables and microorganisms were analyzed. The results showed that the concentrations of heavy metals and soil physicochemical properties had various impacts on microbial community composition under different heavy metal contamination levels. Most dominant bacteria were in significant negative correlation with Cd in ML region, and significantly correlated with TN and OM in LL region. However, there was no significant correlation between dominant fungi and the physicochemical properties in LL region. And most of the dominant fungi were significantly correlated with the heavy metal concentrations in SL region. The bacterial phyla such as Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria and Bacteroidetes showed more tolerance with heavy metal contamination in SL, ML and LL regions, respectively. Meanwhile, the dominant fungi of Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota, Glomeromycota, Zygomycota and Rozellomycota showed stronger correlations with heavy metal contamination in SL and LL regions. These results indicated that some microorganisms had strong tolerance to heavy metal contamination and had certain heavy metals digestion ability, which can create an appropriate soil environment for the growth of food crops.
The Spatial Distribution Pattern of Heavy Metals and Risk Assessment of Moso Bamboo Forest Soil Around Lead–zinc Mine in Southeastern China

Abstract:Southeast China serves as a vast habitat of moso bamboo situated adjacent to the mining area. Heavy metal contamination of the soils poses a great threat to bamboo plantations in the region. The present study aimed at determination of the heavy metals concentration in mined soils and bamboo shoot, the spatial distribution pattern of heavy metals in soils and the spatial correlations between heavy metal pollution in soils and bamboo shoots, and risk assessment of metals in soil. The soil samples (97) were collected from the study area to assess the status of metal pollution in soils adjacent to bamboo plantations around the mining area of southeast China. The median soil Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn concentrations were 0.50 mg kg(-1), 58.31 mg kg(-1), 27.89 mg kg(-1), 405.89 mg kg(-1), 286.32 mg kg(-1), 209.53 mg kg(-1), respectively. Correlation analysis suggested that soil metal species except Cr mostly exceeded the threshold values and accumulated as a result of mining activities. In addition, the mean heavy metals concentrations in moso bamboo rhizome were very low from the study area; the metals could be based on their prevalence as: Zn > Mn > Cu > Pb > Cr > Cd. The spatial statistics and autocorrelation analysis showed that most of the soil heavy metals represented a geographically increasing concentric trend (from the surrounding area to mining center). A low correlation existed between metals concentrations of soil and bamboo shoots. Pb concentrations in bamboo shoots exceeded the standard limits and supposed to have spatial correlation with its concentration in soil. The metal distributions in soil were held responsible for their bioaccumulation in edible portions of vegetables. The risk assessment confirmed that about 60.82% of the study area suffered from metal contamination. Adaptation of Soil Fungi to Heavy Metal Contamination in Paddy Fields—a Case Study in Eastern China

Abstract:Soil fungi have been widely studied, but the effects of heavy metal contamination at various levels as well as the abundance and diversity of heavy metal tolerant fungi in the contaminated paddy soils are still unknown. The purpose of this study is to analyze the adaptability of fungi at different levels of heavy metal contamination to identify species that have strong adaptability to heavy metals. In this research, the technology of high-throughput sequencing was applied to study fungal communities in severe level (SL), moderate level (ML), light level (LL), and clean level (CL) for soil samples polluted by heavy metal, as well as to analyze the relations between environmental variables and fungal communities. The spearman analysis showed that 6 dominant fungal phyla and 18 dominant fungal genera were significantly correlated with these environmental variables. The α-diversity indexes of the soil fungal community from SL, ML, and CL were, mostly, drastically higher than the LL samples (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, Ascomycota, the main fungal phylum, was spotted to yield a strong tolerance towards heavy metals, especially in ML. The most dominant genera of tolerant fungi in this area, which are Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium, could absorb and transport the heavy metals with the help of nutrients under certain heavy metal contamination levels. Therefore, this study indicated that some fungi, which have strong biodegradability on heavy metals, can reduce toxicity of heavy metals and create a proper soil environment to grow food crops.

Abstract:Little is known about the characteristics of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community in the roots of host plants growing on heavy metal contaminated sites. The objectives of this study were to examine the community structure of AMF associated with the roots of a copper (Cu) tolerant plant—Elsholtzia splendens in a Cu mining area in southeastern Anhui Province, China. Molecular techniques were used to analyze AMF community composition and phylogenetic relationship in E. splendens roots sampled from three Cu mine spoils and two adjacent reference areas. Results obtained showed that root colonization and AMF diversity were very low and negatively correlated with total and extractable Cu concentrations. All the DNA sequences recovered belonged to the genus of Glomus. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the AMF community composition varied remarkably among different sites and was related closely to soil properties, especially Cu concentrations. The distribution pattern of AMF species in various sites suggested the degree of AMF tolerance to Cu contamination. The unique AMF species that presented exclusively in heavily contaminated sites need to be further examined for potential application in phytoremediation of metal contaminated soils.
EFFECTS OF COMPLEX HEAVY METAL POLLUTION ON BIOMASS AND COMMUNITY STRUCTURE OF SOIL MICROBES IN PADDY SOIL

Abstract:Effects of complex heavy metal pollution on biomass and community structure of soil microbes in paddy soil were studied with the aid of the chloroform fumigation-extraction,diluted agar plate cultivation and phospholipid fatty acid(PLFA) techniques,using soil samples collected from paddy fields in the vicinity of a small smeltery in Fuyang County,Zhejiang Province.Results show that soil microbial biomass was reduced in paddy fields polluted by Cu,Zn,Cd and Pb together.Soil microbial community structure was also affected by complex pollution and about 41.82% of the change was attributed to the pollution.Soils high in heavy metal pollution were dominated with microbes high in fatty acids of 12∶0,i15∶0,i17∶0,18∶0,i16∶0 and 19∶0,while soils low in heavy metal pollution with microbes high in fatty acids of 20∶2ω6,9c,20∶0,16∶1ω9c,a15∶0,a16∶0,18∶1ω7,10Me16∶0 and 10Me19∶0.With pollution rising in degree,soil microbes decreased in Cmic/Nmic,fungi increased relatively,and the amount of actinomyce and G-bacteria decreased relatively.

Abstract:The current research progress in contamination situation and assessment of heavy metals in vegetable plantation soils and vegetables in China was reviewed. The relationship of heavy metals in soils and vegetables in China was established using the data published in recent Chinese literatures. The results showed that accumulated contents of heavy metals in different kinds of vegetables and different varieties of the same vegetable were greatly different. Based on the collected data and standards for environmental quality of heavy metals in soil and foods,we discussed and set up the guidelines for health risk to heavy metals in vegetable plantation soils in China for risk assessment and policy makers.
Effects of an Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungus on the Growth of and Cadmium Uptake in Maize Grown on Polluted Wasteland, Farmland and Slopeland Soils in a Lead-Zinc Mining Area

Abstract:Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) exist widely in soil polluted by heavy metals and have significant effects on plant growth and cadmium (Cd) uptake. Cd contents differ among wasteland, farmland and slopeland soils in a lead-zinc mining area in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The effects of AMF on maize growth, root morphology, low-molecular-weight organic acid (LMWOA) concentrations and Cd uptake were investigated via a root-bag experiment. The results show that AMF increased maize growth on Cd-polluted soils, resulting in increases in root length, surface area, volume and branch number, with the effects being stronger in farmland than in wasteland and slopeland soils; increased malic acid and succinic acid secretion 1.3-fold and 1.1-fold, respectively, in roots on farmland soil; enhanced the iron- and manganese-oxidized Cd concentration by 22.6%, and decreased the organic-bound Cd concentration by 12.9% in the maize rhizosphere on farmland soil; and increased Cd uptake 12.5-fold and 1.7-fold in shoots and by 25.7% and 86.6% in roots grown on farmland and slopeland soils, respectively. Moreover, shoot Cd uptake presented significant positive correlations with root surface area and volume and LMWOA concentrations. Thus, these results indicated the possible mechanism that the increased maize Cd uptake induced by AMF was closely related to their effect on root morphology and LMWOA secretion, with the effects varying under different Cd pollution levels.

Abstract:Microorganisms play a fundamental role in biogeochemical cycling and are highly sensitive to environmental factors, including the physiochemical properties of the soils and the concentrations of heavy metals/metalloids. In this study, high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was used to study the microbial communities of farmland soils in farmland in the vicinity of a lead–zinc smelter. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Gemmatimonadetes were the predominant phyla in the sites of interest. Sphingomonas , Gemmatimonas , Lysobacter , Flavisolibacter , and Chitinophaga were heavy metal-/metalloid-tolerant microbial groups with potential for bioremediation of the heavy metal/metalloid contaminated soils. However, the bacterial diversity was different for the different sites. The contents of heavy metal/metalloid species and the soil properties were studied to evaluate the effect on the soil bacterial communities. The Mantel test revealed that soil pH, total cadmium (T-Cd), and available arsenic played a vital role in determining the structure of the microbial communities. Further, we analyzed statistically the heavy metals/metalloids and the soil properties, and the results revealed that the microbial richness and diversity were regulated mainly by the soil properties, which correlated positively with organic matter and available nitrogen, while available phosphorus and available potassium were negatively correlated. The functional annotation of the prokaryotic taxa (FAPROTAX) method was used to predict the function of the microbial communities. Chemoheterotrophy and airborne chemoheterotrophy of the main microbial community functions were inhibited by soil pH and the heavy metals/metalloids, except in the case of available lead. Mantel tests revealed that T-Cd and available zinc were the dominant factors affecting the functions of the microbial communities. Overall, the research indicated that in contaminated soils, the presence of multiple heavy metals/metalloids, and the soil properties synergistically shaped the structure and function of the microbial communities.

Abstract:Vegetable fields near villages in China are suffering increasing heavy metal damages from various pollution sources including agriculture, traffic, mining and Chinese typical local private family-sized industry. 268 vegetable samples which included rape, celery, cabbages, carrots, asparagus lettuces, cowpeas, tomatoes and cayenne pepper and their corresponding soils in three economically developed areas of Zhejiang Province, China were collected, and the concentrations of five heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg and As) in all the samples were determined. The health risk assessment methods developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) were employed to explore the potential health hazards of heavy metals in soils growing vegetables. Results showed that heavy metal contaminations in investigated vegetables and corresponding soils were significant. Pollution levels varied with metals and vegetable types. The highest mean soil concentrations of heavy metals were 70.36mgkg−1 Pb, 47.49mgkg−1 Cr, 13.51mgkg−1 As, 0.73mgkg−1 for Cd and 0.67mgkg−1 Hg, respectively, while the metal concentrations in vegetables and corresponding soils were poorly correlated. The health risk assessment results indicated that diet dominated the exposure pathways, so heavy metals in soil samples might cause potential harm through food-chain transfer. The total non-cancer and cancer risk results indicated that the investigated arable fields near industrial and waste mining sites were unsuitable for growing leaf and root vegetables in view of the risk of elevated intakes of heavy metals adversely affecting food safety for local residents. Chromium and Pb were the primary heavy metals posing non-cancer risks while Cd caused the greatest cancer risk. It was concluded that more effective controls should be focused on Cd and Cr to reduce pollution in this study area.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination is one of the most concerned global environmental problems and the soil heavy metal contamination is especially severe in lead-zinc mining areas in China.In order to study the soil fungal community composition changes responding to different degree of heavy metal pollution,soil samples from the lead-zinc mine field of Yunnan Mengnuo were studied.5 samples from the heavy metal pollution soil (HP) and other 4 from the low pollution (LP),based on the cluster analysis of heavy metal contents and the physical and chemical properties of the sample were analyzed.Genomic DNA of the soil samples were extracted and the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) genes were sequenced by the high-through sequencing Illumina MiSeq.The fungal communities at different taxonomic levels (Phylum,Class,Order,Family,Genus and Species) were compared.In HP samples,the abundance of unclassified fungi were the highest,then followed by Aspergillus,Un--s-Clavulinaceae sp.and Un--s-fungal sp.ARIZ L453 respectively.In LP samples,the unclassify fungi were also high,but less than HP.The relative abundance of fungi from high to low was Geastrum,Aspergillus and Mortierella.The Representational Difference Analysis (RDA) showed that different heavy metals influence fungal community diversity and the concentrations of Pb was significantly correlated with fungal community.

Abstract:Due to the emerging environmental issues related to heavy metals, concern about the soil quality of farming lands near manufacturing district is increasing. Investigating the function of soil microorganisms exposed to long-term heavy metal contamination is meaningful and important for agricultural soil utilization. This article studied the potential influence of several heavy metals on microbial biomass, activity, abundance, and community composition in arable soil near industrial estate in Zhuzhou, Hunan province, China. The results showed that soil organic contents (SOC) were significantly positive correlated with heavy metals, whereas dehydrogenase activity (DHA) was greatly depressed by the heavy metal stress. Negative correlation was found between heavy metals and basal soil respiration (BSR), and no correlation was found between heavy metals and microbial biomass content (MBC). The quantitative PCR (QPCR) and polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analysis could suggest that heavy metal pollution has significantly decreased abundance of bacteria and fungi and also changed their community structure. The results could contribute to evaluate heavy metal pollution level in soil. By combining different environmental parameters, it would promote the better understanding of heavy metal effect on the size, structure, and activity of microbial community in arable soil.

Abstract:Metal contamination is widespread, but only a few studies have evaluated the toxicological risks of metals (Cd, Cu, and Pb) in earthworms from farmlands in North China (Hebei province). Amynthas hupeiensis , the dominant species in the study area, was used to determine the responses and detoxification mechanisms of uncontaminated (CK), and low (LM)-, and high (HM)-metal-contaminated soils following 7-, 14-, and 28-days exposure. Metal toxicity in LM and HM soils inhibited the biomass of A. hupeiensis . The concentrations of Cd in A. hupeiensis bodies indicated accumulated Cd appeared to remain steady with prolonged exposure, while Cu/Pb increased significantly with soil levels. Bioaccumulation occurred in the order Cd > Pb > Cu in LM soil, and in the order Cd > Cu ≈ Pb in HM soil, which was attributed to differences in available fractions between LM and HM soils. Physiological levels of biomarkers in A. hupeiensis were determined, including total protein (TP), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and malondialdehyde (MDA). Deviations in GSH, GPx, and AChE were considered to denote sensitive biomarkers using the IBRv2 index. Metabolomics data ( 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance-based) revealed changes in metabolites following 28-days exposure to LM and HM soils. Differences in metabolism in A. hupeiensis following exposure to LM and HM were related to energy metabolism, amino acid biosynthesis, glycerophospholipid metabolism, inositol phosphate metabolism, and glutathione metabolism. Metal stress from LM and HM soils disturbed osmoregulation, resulting in oxidative stress, destruction of cell membranes and inflammation, and altered levels of amino acids required for energy by A. hupeiensis . These findings provide biochemical insights into the physiological and metabolic mechanisms underlying the ability of A. hupeiensis to resist metal stress, and for assessing the environmental risks of metal-contaminated soils in farmland in North China.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination in soils seriously threatens human health and aggravates the global pollution burden. In this study, we investigated the risk of heavy metal contamination in soils at a Zn-Pb mineral processing plant in Longnan, China, and the effects of different heavy metal contamination levels on diverse microbial communities. Statistical analysis showed that, except for Ni, the average content of all detected metals (Zn, Pb, As, Cu, Cd, Hg) in the soil was higher than the background value of soil in the study area, which was most seriously contaminated with Pb and As. Comparison of functional divisions showed that heavy metal soil contamination was most serious in the raw material stacking area and the production area. Interpolation analysis showed that areas closer to the wastewater discharge area had higher contents of each heavy metal and were more seriously polluted. From the point of pollution index, the risk of heavy metal soil pollution in the study area was very high (RI = 2845.24, i.e., > 600), with Cd and Hg being the most serious pollutants compared with other heavy metals. Microbial community abundance, diversity, and structure differed at different levels of heavy metal contamination. The community diversity of bacteria decreased with increasing heavy metal concentrations, while no significant change in fungi was observed. Evidence from variation redundancy analysis (RDA) and the Spearman correlation analysis showed that the leading factors affecting microbial community composition were Cu, Cd, Hg, and pH. Actinobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes at the uncontaminated level (CL) were significantly and negatively correlated with the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb. Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi at the severely contaminated level (SL) were significantly correlated with pH and Hg. However, heavy metal contamination had less effect on most of the dominant fungi. In conclusion, microbial communities such as Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Ascomycota showed greater tolerance to heavy metals. These results could be used as important references for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils.

Abstract:The microbial effect of long-term heavy metal pollution on farmland remains unclear. Here, we investigated microbial (bacterial and fungal) communities in topsoil and rhizosphere samples with heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) pollution from four different types of tillage plots around an abandoned zinc smelter set up 85 years ago and analyzed the complex relationship between microorganisms, plants, and heavy metals (HMs) in soil to guide strategies for further soil remediation measures. The abundance and diversity index results showed that the bacterial and fungal diversities of the four plots were significantly different. Meanwhile, correlation analysis of the microbial communities and HMs showed that bacteria Pseudomonas and fungi Chaetothyriales and Fusarium had a good tolerance for HM pollution, but bacteria Vicinamibacteraceae, JG30_KF_CM45, RB41, Gaiella, MB-A2-108, 67-14, and Microvirga, and fungi Glomerellales, Hypocreales, Chaetomium, and Mortierella all showed indications of being sensitive to HM toxicity. Our structural equation model (SEM) attributed the inhibition of Zn and the promotion of Cd to bacterial diversity, attributed a weak inhibition of Cd to fungal diversity, and revealed the effects of the tillage type on these diversities.

Abstract:Compound metal(loid)s are always occurred adjacent smelting-intensive zone. However, little is known with respect to the relative influences of As/Sb and other metal(loid)s on human health and fungal communities as a consequence of the chronic As/Sb smelting fabrication. Our objectives were to determine the ecological impacts of the occurrences of As/Sb and other metal(loid)s on human health and fungal communities via diverse indices and Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequencing in this study. Three vegetated soils exhibited exceptional metal(loid)s enrichment of As, Sb, Cr, Ni, Zn, Mn, Cu and Pb. Higher health risks of As, Sb and Pb were observed in all soils, accounted for over 80% of total health risk. ITS sequencing revealed that fungal communities among three vegetated soils were significantly different in their structures and compositions, and the metal(loid)s types and contents contributed differently to the variations. Fungal community in forest soil was mainly influenced by metal(loid)s, while in maize and rice soil were associated with pH, TC, TOC, TN and TP. Fungal communities were dominated by Ascomycota, followed by Mortierellomycota and Basidiomycota. Linear Discriminate Analysis Effect Size (LefSe) analysis revealed that tolerant taxa affiliated with distinct phylogenetic lineages were vegetation-specific. 25 potential keystone fungal taxa were identified mainly belonged to Dothideomycetes, Orbiliomycetes and Saccharomycetes. Our results may serve as a model for similar metal(loid)s contaminated areas and provide theoretical guidances for bioremediation of metal(loid)s pollution.

Abstract:Unintentional ingestion of metal-contaminated soils may pose a great threat to human health. To accurately evaluate the health risks of heavy metal(loid)s in soils, their bioaccessibility has been widely determined by in vitro assays and increasingly employed to optimize the assessment parameters. Given that, using meta-analysis, we analyzed the literature on farmland heavy metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Ni, and Zn) in Chinese main grain production regions, and collected their total and bioaccessibility data to accurately assess their human health risks. Monte Carlo simulation was used to reduce the uncertainty in metal concentration, intake rate, toxicity coefficient, and body weight. We found that the mean concentration (0.47 mg/kg) and geological accumulation index (I geo , 0–5.24) of Cd were the priority position of controlling metals. Moreover, children are more vulnerable to carcinogenic risks than adults. Soil mineralogy, physicochemical properties, Fe, and the types of in vitro assays are the influencing factors of bioaccessibility discrepancy. Furthermore, appropriate bioaccessibility determination methods can be adapted according to the differences in ecological receptors for the risk assessment, like developing a "personalized assessment" scheme for polluted farmland soil management. Collectively, bioaccessibility-based models may provide an accurate and effective approach to human health risk assessment.

Abstract:Urban fragmented vegetable fields offer fresh produce but pose a potential risk of heavy metal (HM) exposure. Thus, this study investigated HM sources and health risks in the soil-vegetable systems of Chongqing's central urban area. Results indicated that Cd was the primary pollutant, with 28.33 % of soil samples exceeding the screening value. Amaranth was particularly problematic, exceeding thresholds for Cd, Hg, and Cr, and both amaranth and celery showed significantly higher HM accumulation (p < 0.05). The HM pollution level in the soil-vegetable system was moderate or above. The sources of HMs identified via Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model included agricultural activities (18.19 %), natural soil parent material (25.88 %), mixed metal smelting and transportation (30.72 %), and coal combustion (25.21 %). Furthermore, evaluations using the Random Forest (RF) model revealed an intricate interaction of factors influencing the presence of HMs, where enterprise density, population density, and road density played significant roles in HMs accumulation. Monte Carlo assessments revealed higher non-carcinogenic risks for children (Pb, As) and greater carcinogenic risks for adults (Cd). Therefore, the issue of HM pollution in soils and vegetables from fragmented fields in industrial urban areas need attention, given the potential for elevated health risks with long-term vegetable consumption.

Abstract:Vegetable production in China is suffering increasingly heavy metal damages from various pollution sources including agricultural, industrial and other activities. It is of practical significance to understand the effects of human activities on the accumulation and exchangeability of soil heavy metals in vegetable fields. In this study, seventy-two arable layer samples of vegetable soils were collected from the Shaoxing coastal plain, a representative region of the coastal plain of eastern Zhejiang province, China for characterizing the effects of fertilization methods on accumulation and exchangeable heavy metals in soils (Exchangeable heavy metals in the soil samples were extracted by 0.01molL−1 CaCl2). The different origins of heavy metals in the vegetable soils were investigated by multivariate statistical techniques, including principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). Marked increases were noted for soil heavy metals due to long-term manure or chemical fertilizer application. Three significant components were extracted by PCA, explaining 78.86% of total variance. Mn, Co, Ni, Fe, and Al were associated in lithogenic components, while an anthropogenic origin was identified for Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg. However, As level was due to the geochemical background and was not linked to soil management. The results obtained by cluster analysis elucidated individual relationships between metals and agreed with PCA. Cu, Cr, Pb, and Zn in the soils that were mainly associated with the application of chemical fertilizers, organic manures or other activities regarding soil management. Although the origin of Cd, Hg, and As was also attributed to soil management, other sources like vehicle exhaust or aerial depositions were not discarded as possible contributors. Soil amended with organic fertilizer contained more Cu, Pb, Zn and Cr; whereas the soil amended with chemical fertilizer had more Cd. Application of fertilizers also had significant effect on the concentrations of exchangeable heavy metals. Higher mean concentrations of exchangeable Cd and Pb were found in the soils amended with chemical fertilizers, while those of exchangeable Cu and Zn were found in the soils amended with organic fertilizers.

Abstract:There are increasing concerns on heavy metal contaminant in soils and vegetables. In this study, we investigated heavy metal pollution in vegetables and the corresponding soils in the main vegetable production regions of Zhejiang province, China. A total of 97 vegetable samples and 202 agricultural soil samples were analyzed for the concentrations of Cd, Pb, As, Hg, and Cr. The average levels of Cd, Pb, and Cr in vegetable samples [Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris spp. Pekinensis), pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.), celery (Apium graveolens), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), cucumber (Colletotrichum lagenarium), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.), and eggplant (Solanum melongena)] were 0.020, 0.048, and 0.043 mg kg−1, respectively. The Pb and Cr concentrations in all vegetable samples were below the threshold levels of the Food Quality Standard (0.3 and 0.5 mg kg−1, respectively), except that two eggplant samples exceeded the threshold levels for Cd concentrations (0.05 mg kg−1). As and Hg contents in vegetables were below the detection level (0.005 and 0.002 mg kg−1, respectively). Soil pollution conditions were assessed in accordance with the Chinese Soil Quality Criterion (GB15618-1995, Grade II); 50 and 68 soil samples from the investigated area exceeded the maximum allowable contents for Cd and Hg, respectively. Simple correlation analysis revealed that there were significantly positive correlations between the metal concentrations in vegetables and the corresponding soils, especially for the leafy and stem vegetables such as pakchoi, cabbage, and celery. Bio-concentration factor values for Cd are higher than those for Pb and Cr, which indicates that Cd is more readily absorbed by vegetables than Pb and Cr. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the possible pollution of heavy metals in vegetables, especially Cd.

Abstract:The study analyzed metals (Zn, Cu,Cr,As) content in vegetables of vegetable bases of Lanzhou City. Metals content in Solanum tuberosum, Solanum lycopersicum, Solanum melongena, Capsicum annuum, Vigna sinensis, Brassica oleracea, and Allium fistulosum of vegetable bases of Lanzhou City showed significant difference. Overall, the highest content of Zn was found in Allium fistulosum, and the lowest was in Solanum lycopersicum; the highest content of Cu was found in Solanum tuberosum, while lowest in Solanum lycopersicum; the content of Cr was highest in Allium fistulosum, and lowest in Brassica oleracea; for As, the highest content was found in Allium fistulosum, and the lowest was in Brassica oleracea. The content of metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr and As) accumulated in vegetables have strong correlation with metals content in the soils their grown, whereas they nearly have no significant correlations with the PH in their soils. This work was aimed to provide guidance for pollution-free vegetable base construction and heavy metal elements pollution control.
