Abstract:Drought is a natural hazard disaster that can deeply affect environments, economies, and societies around the world. Therefore, accurate monitoring of patterns in drought is important. Precipitation is the key variable to define the drought index. However, the spare and uneven distribution of rain gauges limit the access of long-term and reliable in situ observations. Remote sensing techniques enrich the precipitation data at different temporal-spatial resolutions. In this study, the climate prediction center morphing (CMORPH) technique (CMORPH-CRT), the tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) multi-satellite precipitation analysis (TRMM 3B42V7), and the integrated multi-satellite retrievals for global precipitation measurement (IMERG V05) were evaluated and compared with in situ observations for the drought monitoring in the Xiang River Basin, a humid region in China. A widely-used drought index, the standardized precipitation index (SPI), was chosen to evaluate the drought monitoring utility. The atmospheric water deficit (AWD) was used for comparison of the drought estimation with SPI. The results were as follows: (1) IMERG V05 precipitation products showed the highest accuracy against grid-based precipitation, followed by CMORPH-CRT, which performed better than TRMM 3B42V7; (2) IMERG V05 showed the best performance in SPI-1 (one-month SPI) estimations compared with CMORPH-CRT and TRMM 3B42V7; (3) SPI-1 was more suitable for drought monitoring than AWD in the Xiang River Basin, because its high R-values and low root mean square error (RMSE) compared with the corresponding index based on in situ observations; (4) drought conditions in 2015 were apparently more severe than that in 2016 and 2017, with the driest area mainly distributed in the southwest part of the Xiang River Basin.

Abstract:Drought is an intricate atmospheric phenomenon with the greatest impacts on food security and agriculture in South Asia. Timely and appropriate forecasting of drought is vital in reducing its negative impacts. This study intended to explore the performance of the evaporative stress index (ESI), vegetation health index (VHI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and standardized anomaly index (SAI) based on satellite remote sensing data from 2002–2019 for agricultural drought assessment in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The spatial maps were generated against each index, which indicated a severe agricultural drought during the year 2002, compared to the other years. The results showed that the southeast region of Pakistan, and the north, northwest, and southwest regions of India and Afghanistan were significantly affected by drought. However, Bangladesh faced substantial drought in the northeast and northwest regions during the drought year (2002). The longest drought period of seven months was observed in India followed by Pakistan and Afghanistan with six months, while, only three months were perceived in Bangladesh. The correlation between drought indices and climate variables such as soil moisture has remained a significant drought-initiating variable. Furthermore, this study confirmed that the evaporative stress index (ESI) is a good agricultural drought indicator, being quick and with greater sensitivity, and thus advantageous compared to the VHI, EVI, and SAI vegetation indices.

Evaluation of Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index on Drought Monitoring over Eurasia

Abstract:This study explored the applicability of Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI) derived from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) data for drought monitoring in Eurasia from April to September during 2005 - 2014. TVDI was calculated based on the vegetation index/temperature trapezoid eigenspace (VITT) in this study. The Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index in three time scales (SPEI-01, SPEI-03, SPEI-06) and the Essential Climate Variable surface soil moisture product (ECV-SM) was used to evaluate the performance of TVDI over Eurasia, and to assess the sensitivity of TVDI to different land-cover types. The records of drought events from Emergency Events Database (EM-DAT) were also used to validate TVDI. The results indicated that TVDI negatively responded to SPEIs about 77.43%, 72.01%, and 75.95% of lands respectively, of which 29.84%, 33.93%, and 25.59% were subjected significant relationships (p <; 0.05). A negative correlation between TVDI and SPEIs was detected in most land-cover types, except for evergreen broadleaf forest and deciduous needleaf forest. Similarly, TVDI was also negative correlated with ECV-SM. About 66% of the study areas show negative correlation and 33% of them were statistically significant. There is a highly negative correlation between TVDI and ECV-SM in most types of land cover. Moreover, TVDI could not reflect drought condition correctly when TVDI <; 0.40; it could only reflect long-time excessive drought condition when TVDI > 0.86. A comparison of TVDI with drought records demonstrated that the TVDI could capture drought events in study area.

Abstract:Drought has frequently been witnessed in the country due to various environmental changes such as rise in atmospheric pollution and climatic changes.Based on MOD13A3 and MOD11A2 data,the temperature vegetation dryness index (TVDI)model was constructed and verified.This study used MODIS data for many years during the same period over India and Pakistan to build the feature space of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)and land surface temperature (Ts),and fit dry and wet edge equations in the feature space.The TVDI was calculated over India and Pakistan of hot season (from March to May)from 2009 to 2014.In addition,the TVDI drought level standard is graded to analyze its temporal and spatial variation characteristics with using land use type and terrain data.TVDI is verified using the precipitation data from meteorological sites, and TVDI is contrasted with the standard precipitation index (SPI).The results show that:1)from the drought area statistics, the study region is mainly moderate drought,the area proportion of other grades is smaller;2)from the land use type,the land cover of entire district is good,the TVDI has certain rationality as drought evaluation index for study area;3 ) from meteorological sites,the inversion of TVDI from NDVI-Ts feature space and the total precipitation of the prophase and same period are closely related.
Drought Monitoring and Performance Evaluation of MODIS-based Drought Severity Index (DSI) over Pakistan

Abstract:Drought is an extreme climate phenomenon that mainly results from abnormally low rainfall leading to water scarcity in an ecological system. Pakistan is already facing a serious threat of water shortages. The situation could further be intensified due to the prevailing drought conditions. Therefore, there is a need of consistent drought monitoring to observe drought severity; its duration and spread, to ensure effective planning to help mitigate its possible adverse effects. This study has utilized both satellite and in-situ data for consistent and accurate drought monitoring over Pakistan. Three major drought-intensive periods such as 1968–1975, mid-1980s and 1999–2003 were reflected in the standardized precipitation index (SPI) time series. The deviations of MODIS-NDVI values from their long-term mean were used as a tool to identify wetness and dryness conditions. The tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) precipitation (PPTN) data were used to derive monthly and annual accumulated rainfall. The deviations from the long-term mean (2001–2012) were calculated and mapped to identify drought-prone regions on country scale. It is hard to detect drought signal just from NDVI anomaly values on regional scale. Therefore, DSI index with high resolution and incorporated with MODIS-derived NDVI and ET/PET data was chosen as a tool for regional drought monitoring. The performance of MODIS-derived DSI was evaluated with satellite and in-situ precipitation data. The spatial correlation maps between DSI, TRMM-PPTN and SPI-3 were generated to evaluate the performance of DSI. Significant positive correlation values were present in winter (DJF); spring (MAM) and autumn (SON) seasons, in central parts of the country, portraying strong evidence that DSI is a good indicator for drought conditions especially for agricultural land in plain areas during these seasons. Most of this region is characterized by agricultural land cover and plays an important role in agricultural productivity of the country. Therefore, good performance of DSI would help scientists and policy makers to implement planning and risk reduction strategies in the region .

Abstract:The Temperature–Vegetation–Precipitation–Drought Index (TVPDI) has a good performance in drought monitoring in China. However, different regions have different responses to droughts due to terrain differences. In southeastern Tibet, the drought monitoring capacity of some drought indices without soil information has to be assessed on account of the poor sensitivity between temperature and soil humidity. Therefore, soil moisture was added to calculate a new drought index based on TVPDI in southeastern Tibet, named the Temperature–Vegetation–Soil-Moisture–Precipitation–Drought Index (TVMPDI). Then, the TVMPDI was validated by using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and other remote sensing drought indices, including the Vegetation Health Index (VHI) and Scale Drought Conditions Index (SDCI), during the growing seasons of 2003–2018. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and SPEI were used to represent meteorological drought and Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) was used to represent agricultural drought. The relation between TVMPDI and these drought indices was compared. Finally, the time trends of TVMPDI were also analyzed. The relation coefficients of TVMPDI and SPEI were above 0.5. The correlations between TVMPDI and drought indices, including the Vegetation Health Index (VHI) and Scale Drought Conditions Index (SDCI), also had a good performance. The correlation between the meteorological drought indices (SPI and SPEI) and TVMPDI were not as good as for the TVPDI, but the temporal correlation between the TVMPDI and GPP was greater than that between the TVPDI and GPP. This indicates that the TVMPDI is more suitable for monitoring agricultural drought than the TVPDI. In addition, historical drought monitoring had values that were consistent with those of the actual situation. The trend of the TVMPDI showed that drought in the study area was alleviated from 2003 to 2018. Furthermore, GPP was negatively correlated with SPEI (r = −0.4) and positively correlated with Soil Moisture (SM) drought index (TVMPDI, SMCI) (r = 0.4) in the eastern part of the study area, which suggests that SM, rather than precipitation, could promote the growth of vegetation in the region. A correct understanding of the role of soil information in drought comprehensive indices may monitor meteorological drought and agricultural drought more accurately.

A Robust Integrated Agricultural Drought Index under Climate and Land Use Variations at the Local Scale in Pakistan

Abstract:This study aims to develop an integrated agricultural drought index (IADI) that incorporates multiple remote sensing-based agricultural drought indices, considering variations in climate and land use at a local scale in ten different agro-ecological zones (AEZs) of Pakistan from 2000 to 2020. The IADI focuses on soil moisture stress to vegetation, utilizing the soil moisture condition index (SMCI) derived from various soil moisture datasets. The correlation between SMCI and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) is assessed at different time scales (1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month) using Pearson correlation coefficient (r). Results indicate that SMCIERA5-Land is superior to others and is selected to develop the IADI. To account for local variations in climate and land use, agricultural drought indices (ADIs) are calculated on a 0.25°×0.25° grids. These ADIs are then averaged over a 3×3 window and analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) to understand the causal relationship between SMCIERA5-Land and ADIs. Temperature condition index (TCI) and vegetation health index (VHI) demonstrate a significant causal relationship with SMCIERA5-Land in most AEZs, while the relationship between temperature-vegetation dryness index (TVDI) and vegetation condition index (VCI) with SMCIERA5-Land is insignificant across the AEZs except in northern Pakistan. The dominance of land surface temperature (LST)-derived indices in most AEZs highlights the role of temperature in drought onset and propagation. To develop the IADI, Bayesian principal component analysis (BPCA) is employed to calculate dynamic weights between the selected ADIs and SMCIERA5-Land. The distribution of BPCA weights exhibits extreme variability across different AEZs, with some windows being sensitive to LST-derived ADIs and others to NDVI-derived ADIs. The average BPCA weights for VCI, TCI, VHI, and TVDI range from 9.42%–23.05%, 23.20–49.83%, 13.00–31.08%, and 16.38–25.50%, respectively. The IADI demonstrates the best fit with TCI and VHI, while showing good agreement with SPEI, VCI, and TVDI. The correlation between IADI and TCI/VHI ranges from 0.62/0.72–0.94/0.97. Furthermore, ordinary least square regression (OLSR) is used to assess the accuracy of IADI, ADIs, and SPEI in analyzing the impact of drought on wheat/maize yield at the district level in Punjab province, Pakistan. OLSR analysis reveals the dominance of IADI, followed by VHI, in analyzing the role of drought on crop yield. For example, in Rajanpur district, one unit increase in drought severity results in an 11.94 t/ha decrease in maize yield, with IADI explaining 59% of the variations in maize yield. Similarly, one unit increase in drought severity leads to a 7.22 t/ha decrease in wheat yield, with IADI explaining 49% of the variations in wheat yield. Overall, results indicate that the developed IADI effectively captures agricultural drought with high spatial and temporal resolutions across different agro-ecological zones, providing valuable insights for monitoring agricultural drought in data-scarce regions.

Abstract:Drought is a major natural hazard that causes significant economic loss across the world. Drought indexes derived from remote sensing data can provide dynamic information in real time, facilitating drought assessments. The evapotranspiration (ET) deficit index (ETDI) is derived from observations of ET and potential ET. ETDI is an indicator of agricultural drought. In this study, actual ET was modeled using the Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator with remote sensing data and ground-station observation data as input. We investigated the efficacy of ETDI to indicate regional agricultural drought in a major region of winter wheat production in Northern China. Spatiotemporal changes in ETDI agreed well with the standardized precipitation index (SPI) on a 5 month scale and with the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI). ETDI also agreed well with the composite index of yield reduction (CI), which represents the provincial percentage area of cropland subject to drought stress. CI performed better in agricultural regions where water was supplied by precipitation rather than irrigation. Changes in winter wheat yield due to meteorological events were highly correlated with ETDI, rather than SPI or PDSI, averaged across specific growth stages. Weather conditions had significant impacts in April (jointing and boot stages of winter wheat development) in Hebei province, in May (heading and grain-filling stages) in Shanxi province, and from January through April in other provinces. These results demonstrate that ETDI is a suitable index for indicating regional agricultural drought in order to inform drought mitigation activities.

Abstract:South Asia is susceptible to drought due to high variation in monthly precipitation. The drought indices deriving from remote sensing data have been used to monitor drought events. To secure agricultural land in South Asia, timely and effective drought monitoring is very important. In this study, TRMM data was utilized along with remote sensing techniques for reliable drought monitoring. The Drought Severity Index (DSI), Temperature Vegetation Drought Index (TVDI), NDVI, and Normalized Vegetation Supply Water Index (NVSWI) are more helpful in describing the drought events in South Asia due to the dryness and low vegetation. To categorize drought-affected areas, the spatial maps of TRMM were used to confirm MODIS-derived TVDI, DSI, and NVSWI. The DSI, TVDI, NVSWI, and Normalized Monthly Precipitation Anomaly Percentage (NAP) indices with an integrated use of MODIS-derived ET/PET and NDVI were selected as a tool for monitoring drought in South Asia. The seasonal DSI, TVDI, NVSWI, NAP, and NDVI values confirmed that South Asia suffered an extreme drought in 2001, which continued up to 2003. The correlation was generated among DSI, NAP, NVWSI, NDVI, TVDI, and TCI on a seasonal basis. The significantly positive correlation values of DSI, TVDI, and NVSWI were in DJF, MAM, and SON seasons, which were described as good drought monitoring indices during these seasons. During summer, the distribution values of drought indicated that more droughts occurred in the southwest regions as compared to the northeast region of South Asia. From 2001 to 2017, the change trend of drought was characterized; the difference of drought trend was obviously indicated among different regions. In South Asia, generally, the frequency of drought showed declining trends from 2001 to 2017. It was verified that these drought indices are a comprehensive drought monitoring indicator and would reduce drought risk in South Asia.

Abstract:Drought monitoring is a complicated issue as it requires multiple meteorological variables to monitor and anticipate drought accurately. Therefore, developing a method that enables researchers, data scientists, and planners to comprehend drought mitigation policies more accurately is essential. In this research, based on the concepts behind the calculation of the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), a new drought index is proposed for regional drought monitoring: the Modified Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (MSPEI). The potential of the proposed index is based on the estimation of Reference Evapotranspiration (ET o ). Therefore, the Modified Hargreaves-Samani (MHS) equation based on fuzzy logic calibration is used to estimate ET o . The proposed index is validated on ten meteorological stations in Pakistan at a one-month time scale. Afterward, based on the Pearson correlation, the performance of the proposed index is compared with the commonly used drought index (SPEI). Results showed a significant correlation ( r > 0.7) between the quantitative values of MSPEI and SPEI for all ten stations. Moreover, a modified Tjostheims coefficient is used to estimate and test the spatial correlation between SPEI and MSPEI for different drought classes. According to our findings, the association between the SW, ND, ED, EW, MW, and SD patterns of MSPEI and SPI is 0.74, 0.834, 0.673, 0.592, 0.393, and 0.434, respectively. Meanwhile, considering the significance of future drought trend detection, this research is further extended to detect the future trend of MSPEI by using the Hurst index. In accordance with the results, Bahawalnagar, Sialkot, Lahore, Kotli, and Gilgit all have HI values greater than 0.5 (0.63, 0.58, 0.56, 0.55, and 0.53, respectively). In contrast, Muzaffarabad, Skardu, and Jhelum have HI values 0.47, 0.45 and 0.38, respectively; however, HI values of 0.5 are observed at Dera Ismail Khan (DIK) and Islamabad. Therefore, this research provides a basis for developing and enhancing drought hazard characterization, encouraging researchers and policymakers to monitor and forecast regional droughts using a more accurate drought index.

Abstract:This study investigates the impact of agricultural drought on water use efficiency (WUE) in Punjab, Pakistan, analysing 22 years of MODIS imagery. Findings reveal that drought increases WUE across all climatic regions, with arid zones showing stronger responses than humid ones. These insights are crucial for enhancing agricultural and water resource management in regions vulnerable to climate change. Drought is the most destructive phenomenon that distresses the terrestrial carbon cycle balance and crop production. The variation in evapotranspiration (ET) and gross primary productivity (GPP) is a significant cause of agricultural drought effects on water use efficiency. This study aims to evaluate the impact of agricultural drought on WUE and it's anomalies in different climate regions. The standard vegetation index was used to measure the extent of agricultural drought. WUE was calculated using the ratio of ET, GPP, and climate classification using the De Martonne method. This study was conducted over the last 22 years, from 2001 to 2022. Meanwhile, 2001, 2002, 2014, and 2018 were considered high drought years based on a 22‐year analysis. According to remote sensing analysis of ET and GPP, the WUE increased throughout drought in all climate regions and more strongly in the arid zone than in humid regions. Humid areas were more vital due to drought than arid ones. WUE anomalies badge with increased drought severity across all climates except the very humid zone. Humid climates saw faster recovery times than arid ones, and areas experienced severe droughts. The findings of this research are essential for understanding the carbon and water cycles for agriculture management. The analysis of drought severity and WUE across arid climate regions helped analyse the varying impact of drought on WUE due to climate change. The significance of this study includes informing agricultural, water resource, and drought management planning in the Punjab Province, an agricultural region vulnerable to climate change. This study holds important learnings for agricultural regions worldwide. It has practical and scientific importance regarding agricultural systems' specific stresses and responses to droughts.

The study aims to assess and evaluate the agricultural drought occurrence and its severity by using remote sensing-based multivariate indices to provide real-time spatial-temporal information for drought monitoring. Satellite datasets from Landsat images with a spatial resolution of 30 m were processed and rescaled to compute vegetation and temperature indices and derive drought status indices. The temporal and spatial variability of drought were detected and mapped by using satellite-based drought indices and validated by available in-situ data. New hydrological insights for the region The study revealed that the area was exposed to extreme drought in 1984, 2009, and 2014. On the contrary, no longer extreme drought dominated in 1989, 1994, 1999, and 2004. Moreover, the relationships between various indices have been examined by using a linear regression model. It has been detected that there is a significant strong relationship between NDVI and LST (R 2 /p = 0.93/0.00), VCI and TCI (R 2 /p = 0.71/0.00), VHI and SPI (R 2 /p = 0.85/0.00). Therefore, the spatial extent and temporal assessment of drought-related information are important for decision-making in the field of agriculture.

Abstract:Drought is a very complex natural hazard and has a negative impact on the global ecosystem as a whole. Recently Bangladesh has been experiencing by different degree of dryness as a consequence of high climate variability, affecting the crop production to a great extent in the last couple of decades. In this context, the present study was made an effort to assess and analyse drought characteristics based on two drought indices, i.e., Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), and model agricultural drought risk with Fast-and-frugal decision tree (FFT) model in Bangladesh from 2001 to 2016. We identified drought occurrence and its dynamics with three-time scale, i.e., SPI3J (November-January), SPI3A (February-April) and SPI6A (November-April), and three rice-growing seasons, i.e., Aus (March-July), Aman (June-November), and Boro (November-May) from TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data. The results demonstrate that TRMM had good consistency with rain gauge measurement compared to CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data) and PERSIANN-CDR (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks-Climate Data Record) data to derive SPI3J, SPI3A and SPI6A. Overall results confirmed that more drought frequency observed in SPI6A than SPI3J and SPI3A time scale, representing moderate to severe drought throughout the country. Regarding agricultural drought resulting from VCI demonstrated Boro rice-growing season as more vulnerable crop growing season affected by severe to extreme drought event. Validation results of VCI exhibited a high correlation with rice yield data than in-situ soil moisture data. Results of the FFT model show that out of ten predictor variables SPI3J and SPI6A caused agricultural drought with SPI value less than -1.08 and -1.21 respectively. Additionally, the model characterized SPI3J and SPI6A as the most critical driving factors with the highest balanced accuracy triggering agricultural drought risk in Bangladesh.

Abstract:Various drought indices are normally used to monitor drought and its risk management. Precipitation, temperature and other hydro meteorological parameters are the essential parts to the identification of drought. For this purpose, several drought indices have been developed and are being used around the world. This study identifies the applicability and comparison of drought indices in Pakistan by evaluating the performance of 15 drought indices. The indices include standardized precipitation index (SPI), standardized precipitation temperature index, standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), China Z-Index, deciles index, modified CZI, Z-Score, rainfall variability index, standardized soil moisture anomaly index, weighted anomaly standardized precipitation index, percent of normal precipitation index, self-calibrated Palmer drought severity index, composite index, percentage area weighted departure and reconnaissance drought index (RDI). These indices are compared by utilizing long term data of 58 meteorological stations for the period 1951–2014. The performance, efficiency and significance are also tested by applying different statistical tests. The SPI, SPEI and RDI results showed a good capability to monitor drought status in Pakistan. The positive increasing trend (towards wetness) is noted by several of the aforementioned indices at 95% confidence level. In addition, historical drought years and intensity have been explored along with comparison of recent long episode of drought (1999–2002) and all the indices captured this period successfully.

Abstract:Drought is a complex hazard caused by the breaking of water balance and it has always an impact on agricultural, ecological and socio-economic spheres. Although the drought indices deriving from remote sensing data have been used to monitor meteorological or agricultural drought, there are no indices that can suitably reflect the comprehensive information of drought from meteorological to agricultural aspects. In this paper, the synthesized drought index (SDI) is defined as a principal component of vegetation condition index (VCI), temperature condition index (TCI) and precipitation condition index (PCI). SDI integrates multi-source remote sensing data from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) and tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) and it synthesizes precipitation deficits, soil thermal stress and vegetation growth status in drought process. Therefore, this method is favorable to monitor the comprehensive drought. In our research, a heavy drought process was accurately explored using SDI in Shandong province, China from 2010 to 2011. Finally, a validation was implemented and its results show that SDI is not only strongly correlated with 3-month scales standardized precipitation index (SPI3), but also with variation of crop yield and drought-affected crop areas. It was proved that this index is a comprehensive drought monitoring indicator and it can contain not only the meteorological drought information but also it can reflect the drought influence on agriculture.

Abstract:Drought is a complex natural disaster affected by multiple climate factors and underlying surface. In recent years, drought monitoring indices of remote sensing have been widely applied to monitor drought in a certain region or global. However, some remote sensing drought monitoring indices do not consider the drought-causing factors enough to reflect the comprehensive drought situation of a region fully. In this paper, a new remote sensing drought monitoring index, called Remote Sensing Drought Evaluation Index (RSDEI), was constructed by combining Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Temperature Condition Index (TCI), Precipitation Condition Index (PCI), and Soil Moisture Condition Index (SMCI) using the spatial principal component analysis (SPCA) method. The reasonableness of RSDEI was test and verified using Net Primary Productivity (NPP), Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), and unit area crop yield. The RSDEI was also applied to the drought condition monitoring of the northwest arid and semi-arid region from 2001 to 2019.The result demonstrated that the results showed that the RSDEI had a high correlation coefficient with SPEI-12 (R=0.85, p<0.01). It is concluded that the correlation coefficient between RSDEI and NPP is 0.74 at 95% confidence level, which indicates that RSDEI and NPP have a strong correlation. Then, the correlation between RSDEI and crop yield per unit area is 0.89. The results of RSDEI showed that the drought in northwest China started in May and lasted in September from 2001 to 2019. The lowest value of RSDEI appeared in May, which inflected the significant difference of drought level in different month in northwest China. The result of CV (coefficient of variation) showed that the drought variation in the study area had a stable low fluctuation condition as a whole, in the northwest and northeast of study area, which indicated that the changes of drought were different in the past 19 years. The Hurst exponent analysis showed that the area with the positive evolution of Hurst index (0.5<h<1) 1,845,046.669="" is="" km<sup="">2,which accounts for 75.9% of the total area, while the area with reverse evolution characteristics (H<0.5) accounts for 24.1% of the total area. The result obtained above reflected that the drought changes in most regions are better than that in the past 19 years. The trend gradually changes from drought to humid.</h<1)>

Abstract:Soil Moisture (SM) is a direct indicator of dryness of the land surface, and the amount of precipitation (P), vegetation status, and Land Surface Temperature (LST) are directly related to SM; thus, these factors indirectly characterize the dryness of the land surface. However, there are limitations and shortcomings of using a single factor to assess dryness because of the interactions among factors. A method that can combine the advantages of the three factors is needed to better monitor dryness. In this study, a new Remote Sensing (RS) dryness index, called the Temperature Vegetation Precipitation Dryness Index (TVPDI), was defined and developed using the Euclidean distance method and three-dimensional (3D) P-Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)-LST.The reasonableness of this index was tested and verified using SM data, three variables (P, NDVI, and LST), other recognized dryness indices, crop yield per unit area and Net Primary Productivity (NPP). In addition, the reliability of the TVPDI results was analyzed at different spatial scales and using different data sources. The results demonstrated that the TVPDI was highly correlated with SM (R > 0.64, p < .01) and exhibited better performance than the P, NDVI, and LST results. The time series of the TVPDI and other dryness indices exhibited spatially good consistency. The TVPDI was temporally well-matched to the crop yield per unit area and NPP in most regions of China, and performed better than other dryness indices. Furthermore, in the four sample regions, the TVPDIMODIS results closely matched the TVPDILandsat and Landsat image results, indicating that the TVPDI is a reliable and robust index for dryness monitoring to some extent. Moreover, the application of the TVPDI for dryness-wetness monitoring in China indicated significant spatiotemporal differences in the dryness-wetness status at both monthly and annual scales. The distribution of dryness in China exhibited obvious differences in different agricultural regions. In conclusion, the TVPDI is an RS dryness index that can be applied to dryness assessments.

Assessment of Merged Satellite Precipitation Datasets in Monitoring Meteorological Drought over Pakistan

Abstract:The current study evaluates the potential of merged satellite precipitation datasets (MSPDs) against rain gauges (RGs) and satellite precipitation datasets (SPDs) in monitoring meteorological drought over Pakistan during 2000–2015. MSPDs evaluated in the current study include Regional Weighted Average Least Square (RWALS), Weighted Average Least Square (WALS), Dynamic Clustered Bayesian model Averaging (DCBA), and Dynamic Bayesian Model Averaging (DBMA) algorithms, while the set of SPDs is Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM)-based Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG-V06), Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) Multi-Satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA 3B42 V7), Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN), and ERA-Interim (re-analyses dataset). Several standardized precipitation indices (SPIs), including SPI-1, SPI-3, and SPI-12, are used to evaluate the performances of RGs, SPDs, and MSPDs across Pakistan as well as on a regional scale. The Mann–Kendall (MK) test is used to assess the trend of meteorological drought across different climate regions of Pakistan using these SPI indices. Results revealed higher performance of MSPDs than SPDs when compared against RGs for SPI estimates. The seasonal evaluation of SPIs from RGs, MSPDs, and SPDs in a representative drought year (2008) revealed mildly to moderate wetness in monsoon season while mild to moderate drought in winter season across Pakistan. However, the drought severity ranges from mild to severe drought in different years across different climate regions. MAPD (mean absolute percentage difference) shows high accuracy (MAPD <10%) for RWALS-MSPD, good accuracy (10% < MAPD <20%) for WALS-MSPD and DCBA-MSPD, while good to reasonable accuracy (20% < MAPD < 50%) for DCBA in different climate regions. Furthermore, MSPDs show a consistent drought trend as compared with RGs, while SPDs show poor performance. Overall, this study demonstrated significantly improved performance of MSPDs in monitoring the meteorological drought.

Abstract:Drought is one of the most devastating natural hazards in the world, affecting millions of individuals in in different ways, so it's better monitoring and comprehensive assessment is important. Univariate or multivariate drought indices are able to monitor one type of drought and can not reflect comprehensive drought information from meteorological to agricultural aspects. For this purpose, by combining the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Temperature Condition Index (TCI), the Soil Water Index (SWI) and the precipitation condition index (PCI) a comprehensive drought index called Combined Drought Index (CDI) was proposed. In this study, meteorological and agricultural droughts from 2001 to 1397 in Karkheh Basin in southwestern Iran were monitored. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method, which is a mainstay of modern data analysis tools for constructing a composite index, was applied to a data matrix that contains the time series of the computed PCI, VCI, TCI, and SWI indices for a given location, and the first leading component of the PCA was introduced as CDI index. The results indicated that the highest correlation (r = 0.53, r = 0.56) between the CDI, SPI-1 and SDI was observed respectively, which indicates the ability of this index for drought comprehensive monitoring. It is also suggested that in order to improve the performance of the CDI, in addition to the considered parameters in this study, other factors affecting the performance of each of the remote sensing indicators such as vegetation type, plant root, soil texture type, evaporation and Transpiration also be considered in future studies.
