Abstract:This article draws on the stories told by Indigenous women in the midwestern United States to explore embodied experiences of violence and how they conceptualize healing in the aftermath of violence. Two focus groups-conducted as talking circles-were completed with 16 Indigenous women. Findings highlight four salient themes: embodied impacts of violence; normalization of violence; (im)possibilities of healing; and strategies for healing. In particular, the women highlighted embodied practices like collective storytelling as a means of healing. This study deepens our understanding of violence against women by promoting Indigenous ways of knowing and uplifting the voices of Indigenous women.
Clinical Strategies to Develop Connections, Promote Health and Address Pain From the Perspectives of Indigenous Youth, Elders, and Clinicians

Abstract:In this article we discuss findings from a community based, participatory action research study. The aim was to understand how Indigenous youth describe, experience, manage pain and hurt and how they seek care. A critical analysis guided by Two-Eyed Seeing and Medicine Wheel frameworks highlighted important clinical strategies for Indigenous youth to balance their health and reduce pain. This study is a partnership project with an Aboriginal Health Centre in Southern Ontario and the Canadian Institute of Health Research funded Aboriginal Children's Hurt and Healing Initiative (ACHH). The study gathered perspectives of Indigenous youth, Elders, and health clinicians using conversation sessions guided by a First Nations doctoral student and nurse researcher. Using the medicine wheel framework three main thematic areas emerged across the three groups and include (1) Predictors of Imbalance; (2) Indicators of Imbalance; and (3) Strategies to re-establish balance health in relation to pain. The main strategy includes considerations for clinicians using the acronym LISTEN (Language, Individual, Share, Teachable moments, Engage, and Navigate) approach that outlines strategies for clinicians that will be a safe guide to manage pain and hurt.

Abstract:Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) significantly impacts the lives of First Nations Australians. Failure to eliminate RHD is in part attributed to healthcare strategies that fail to understand the lived experience of RHD. To rectify this, a PhD study was undertaken in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia, combining Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing with interviews (24 participants from clinical and community settings) and participant observation to privilege Aboriginal voices, including the interpretations and experiences of Aboriginal co-researchers (described in the adjunct article). During analysis, Aboriginal co-researchers identified three interwoven themes: maintaining good feelings; creating clear understanding (from good information); and choosing a good djalkiri (path). These affirm a worldview that prioritises relationships, positive emotions and the wellbeing of family/community. The findings demonstrate the inter-connectedness of knowledge, choice and behaviour that become increasingly complex in stressful and traumatic health, socioeconomic, political, historical and cultural contexts. Not previously heard in the RHD domain, the findings reveal fundamental differences between Aboriginal and biomedical worldviews contributing to the failure of current approaches to communicating health messages. Mitigating this, Aboriginal co-researchers provided targeted recommendations for culturally responsive health encounters, including: communicating to create positive emotions; building trust; and providing family and community data and health messages (rather than individualistic).

Abstract:In the poignant words of a 12-year-old indigenous girl from the Pijao ethnicity (Tolima, Colombia), who shared her perspective before succumbing to leukaemia, we gain a profound understanding of health from her unique cultural viewpoint. Growing up in El Escobal, indigenus community, with her sister, she experienced the spiritual strength and unity that their culture attributes to twins. For her, health was deeply intertwined with the traditions and rituals of her people, emphasising the healing powers of plants and spiritual harmonisation.She observed a stark contrast between indigenous and Western perspectives on medicine and spirituality. In her reflection, the young girl highlighted the universal language of mutual learning and support that transcends cultural differences. Her message underscores the importance of cultural harmony and the healing power of shared human experiences, advocating for a world where diverse beliefs and practices contribute to collective strength and understanding.This text was her response to the question, "What is health?" as part of one of the methodological exercises in the doctoral research of Pinzón-Segura MC. Teoría del Intersticio Afectivo: Un nuevo enfoque feminista decolonial de análisis de políticas públicas [Internet]. Bogotá: Repositorio virtual de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia; 2024. The thesis, awarded with the distinction of summa cum laude, included various methods such as participant observation, sociological interviews, and discourse analysis of government documents. The question "What is health?" specifically guided 40 creative narrative workshops, which were an integral component of the ethnography and arts-based research design.
Understanding Native women's health: historical legacies

Abstract:Purpose: Theoretical underpinnings of two theories are examined for their applicability in guiding practice and research when understanding Native American women's health outcomes. Method: Published studies testing two independent theories, historical trauma and weathering, are reviewed. Key theoretical concepts that are applicable in the study of Native women and understanding their intergenerational heritage of injustice and cultural context are discussed. Results: The authors infer underlying assumptions and definitions of both theories and present a hypothetical diagram blending both theories. Conclusion: By understanding historical legacies and the surrounding context, researchers and clinicians can develop knowledge to improve and enhance optimal health outcomes and life opportunities for Native women.

Abstract:In this study, exploratory research on self-determination using Indigenous research methods provided a model to help heal trauma and discuss recovery for traumatic sexual experiences. The methods and healing were based on a Cree worldview. Informed consent and questions were developed by the principal investigator prior to the research commencing. Eleven co-creators had the opportunity to revise questions, discuss the research, speak the Cree language, and participate in one-to-one interviews, group meetings and ceremonies. They also had the chance to review the transcripts and approve/disapprove the content, provide guidance on sacred knowledge and suggest terms to use, and co-author the paper, if they chose and three did. A Cree concept was developed from the work, namely, nehiyaw isecikewena which involved promoting self-determination and sovereignty alongside recovery.

Abstract:Background: Studies indicate that complex postsurgical wound healing can significantly alter biopsychological markers responsible for recovery. Yet, there is a lack of research investigating women's experience of living with slow-to-heal Caesarean birth wounds. This is an important area of investigation considering the increase of factors associated with surgical births and poor wound healing in the UK and globally. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore women's experiences of living with a slow-to-heal Caesarean wound. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven women who had lived experience of slow-to-heal Caesarean wounds. Narratives were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach. Results: Analysis of women's narratives revealed three interlinking superordinate themes of 1) 'Tied to that event': healing physical and emotional wounds, 2) The 'good mother' and the 'good patient': negotiating being a carer and being cared for, and 3) 'Adjusting to a new normality'. Overall, slow-to-heal wounds embodied women's perceptions of agency over their Caesarean birth experience and achievement of a new motherhood identity. Wherein, successful healing would encompass a sense of normality defined by subjective notions of regaining expected roles and daily activities, previous bodily functions, and maternal status within their families that became disrupted due to delayed wound healing. Conclusion: Women's narratives support discourse surrounding Caesarean birth and recovery as a biopsychosocial phenomenon. This has important ramifications regarding research and treatment programmes for postnatal women with complex healing that are largely described as 'invisible'.

Abstract:Journal of Health Psychology, Ahead of Print. Venous leg ulcers have impact on people's lives far beyond that of a skin lesion but these impacts have not been explored from an Indigenous perspective. We used a Māori-centered narrative approach to interview 13 Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand with venous leg ulcers. Data analysis was informed by a reflexive thematic approach and four themes were identified: Ko waewae ahau (I wear the leg); Ngā mea hōhā (annoying things); Ka tangi te ngākau (heartfelt grief); and Mamae (pain, sore, hurt). Recognizing patients' expertise in their condition, the inclusion of whānau (family) in care planning and provision, while providing consistent advice and resource access, would all enhance the experience of venous ulcer management. Training in venous leg ulcer care needs to move beyond a focus on the leg and toward a more holistic approach that encompasses a broader understanding of patient experiences and cultural contexts when managing venous ulcers.

Understanding patient experiences with scarring alopecia: a qualitative study with management implications

Abstract:Introduction: Alopecia can have a significant negative impact on patient's lives. The objective of this study is to describe some of the emotional and psychological challenges that affect women with scarring alopecia (SA). Methods: A qualitative study design was used with open-ended, individual interviews with 10 women with biopsy-proven SA. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically using ATLAS.ti analysis software. Results: Four overarching major themes (with several subthemes) emerged including the following: the negative emotional impact of SA, difficulties with concealing hair loss, negative experiences with diagnosis/management, and the importance of support from others. Patients reported that many of these issues were under-emphasized during doctor visits. Conclusion: Analysis of patient responses indicated that patients with SA contend with significant emotional and psychological sequelae of their diagnosis.
A beautiful bush space on Country: Indigenous women's perspectives on the cultural significance of a placenta garden

Abstract:Background: Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, hereafter respectfully referred to as First Nations women, often experience maternity care incongruent with their cultural needs. To date, there is limited research on First Nations women's perceptions of the role that placental burial and a placenta garden may play in promoting connection to culture for women and their babies. Aim: This study aimed to understand First Nations women's perceptions of placenta burial and a dedicated placenta garden in supporting connection to their culture. Methods: In this qualitative descriptive study, decolonising methods were used to recruit eight First Nations women using message stick sampling via First Nations mentors. Stories were told through yarns using a semi-structured yarning guide. Reflexive thematic analysis led to theme generation. Member-checking of preliminary themes by participants and endorsement by First Nations mentors occurred before finalisation of themes. Findings: Four themes captured the women's perspectives on the significance of placental burial and gardens. Recognising the Barriers explores factors impacting on culture and maternity care experiences. Enabling Continuity of Care describes a desire to work with a midwife towards a continuum throughout the perinatal period. Promoting Connection for Mum and Baby explores how the placenta garden can act as a conduit for connection. Finally, Creating Opportunity for Healing describes the essential healing that can be initiated through engaging in cultural placental burial. Conclusion: First Nations women described placental burial as essential to strengthening their connection to culture and perceived that continuity of care with a culturally knowledgeable midwife facilitated connection.
The marked body: Exploring experiences of post-mastectomy scarring, body image and change through artistic tattooing

Abstract:Breast cancer has become the most prevalent cancer globally, predominantly affecting women, with mastectomy surgery a frequent treatment. Women often experience a discrepancy between their post-mastectomy body, and their former sense of self, affecting negatively on wellbeing. The narratives of eight women who chose to artistically tattoo over their mastectomy scars were explored in this study, through semi-structured interviews and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Seven master themes are presented. These themes follow the women from a state of disruption (of body image and gender identity) and surgical scarring as the first marking of the body, to the second marking of the body through artistic tattooing, bringing with it transformation, acceptance, feeling heard and connection with the artist, closure and control and the creation of significance and meaning. Viewed through Self-Discrepancy Theory, the findings of this study has implications for psycho-oncology and wellbeing support for women following mastectomy surgery.

Abstract:As the number of people living with cancer increases, it is important to understand how people can live well with and after cancer. First Nations people diagnosed with cancer in Australia experience survival disparities relating to health service accessibility and a lack of understanding of cultural needs and lived experiences. This study aimed to amplify the voices of First Nations individuals impacted by cancer and advance the development of a culturally informed care pathway. Indigenist research methodology guided the relational and transformative approach of this study. Participants included varied cancer experts, including First Nations people living well with and after cancer, health professionals, researchers, and policy makers. Data were collected through online Yarning circles and analysed according to an inductive thematic approach. The experience of First Nations people living well with and after cancer is inextricably connected with family. The overall themes encompass hope, family, and culture and the four priority areas included the following: strength-based understanding of cancer, cancer information, access to healthcare and support, and holistic cancer services. Respect for culture is interwoven throughout. Models of survivorship care need to integrate family-centred cancer care to holistically support First Nations people throughout and beyond their cancer journey.

Beauty and healing: examining sociocultural expectations of the embodied goddess

Abstract:Studies indicate mental health improvement can occur via religious communities offering social support and other resources. Many people from many cultures regard medicine as a supernatural or magical treatment that can somehow lead to a better state of living. In medical advertising, female role portrayal involves the blending of beauty, ritual and attractiveness in combination with the best product image. A Chinese saying suggests that, "A girl will doll herself up for him who loves her." Female role attraction is a very important ethical subject in gender issues. Moving forward in time, female role visualization and consumption in medical advertising reveal depictions that encouraged women to do some self-searching and find, or develop, inner strength. This study is designed to examine female role portrayals in a restricted patriarchal society. The results indicate that the ideology of motherhood is an accepted social orientation that the public readily identifies with. Results further indicate that beautification through medical products incorporates an emotional element of religious healing and that the objectification of beauty in the media reveals a possible neglect of women's internal beauty.

Abstract:The ideal beauty has a significant impact on social life. Those who feel their body doesn’t meet the idealize body view, some might have body dissatisfaction and lower body appreciation. This study aims to explore a broader definition and understanding of the beauty as it is represented in Scars to Your Beautiful, a song by Alessia Cara, both its lyric and music video. Using content analysis and supported by the concept of the figure of Speech, cinematography, and representation by Stuart Hall completed the investigation on this beauty ideal. The result shows that Scars to Your Beautiful strive to redefine the term of beauty which cannot be determined only by certain criteria such as having a thin body, white skin, flawless and addressed to women only, but beauty reaches a broader definition in all shapes, sizes, colors, even the gender. The Autoimmune Library: An Arts-Based Approach to Women of Color's (Counter)Narratives of Chronic Illness

Abstract:Guided by critical race theorizing (CRT) and arts-based methodologies (i.e., metaphor and pictorial narrative mapping [PNM]), the present study analyzed the healthcare (counter)narratives of 150 United States (U.S.) women of color (i.e., Black/African American, Hispanic/Latina, Native American/Alaska Native, and Multiracial) who have autoimmune disease. Sensitized by the metaphor of a library book, participants were asked to story their healthcare journey through identification of a title, chapters, genre, and book cover description (i.e., [Illness] Storybook Survey). Using critical thematic analysis, we first identified dominant and counter-narratives present in participant storybooks, categorized by literary supra-themes of characters (i.e., dominant narrative of me versus my body, counter-narratives of me versus the system and illness as lineal), plot (i.e., dominant narrative of a hero's journey, counter-narrative of chaos), and tone (i.e., dominant narrative of inspiration, counter-narratives of tangible self-help and humor). Next, guided by PNM, a data visualization technique, each author illustrated one counter-narrative within each literary supra-theme. Our analysis interrogates how participants' stories both reify and resist ideological and structural power at the intersections of their racial, gender, and illness identities. Collectively, this study offers unique contributions to critical, intersectional, and arts-based approaches to communication research, and forwards new methods for studying health narratives historically located in the margins.
Truth to Action: Lived Experiences of Indigenous Healthcare Professionals Redressing Indigenous-Specific Racism

Abstract:Study background: The experience of discrimination through stereotyping, profiling, and bias-informed care not only leads to poor access to healthcare services, but low retention rates of Indigenous health professionals (IHP). As health systems transformation evolves, a significant gap remains in supporting IHP to safely address racism, to be supported culturally to bring their authentic selves and voices to work, and to attend to one's own intellectual, physical, relational, cultural and spiritual wellness within a westernized model of care. Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the experiences of IHP working in mainstream healthcare in order to understand how their work environment impacts the delivery of cultural safe practices. What is reported in this manuscript, as an exercise in truth-telling, is findings about lived experiences of IHP working in one mainstream provincial healthcare region, and not the whole context and outcomes of the study. Methods: Using Indigenous research methodologies, we embodied our Indigeneity into every facet of the research process. We facilitated three talking circles with participants grounded in a distinct cultural and ceremonial context following Secwepemc protocols. Results: The collective voices of IHP revealed the following common experiences: confronting genocide; addressing Indigenous-specific racism; uprooting toxicity and inequities; and upholding Indigenous human rights while enhancing accountability of systems transformation. Conclusions: The experience of IHP working in health systems goes beyond mere individual employment obligations, its often about a families and communities advocacy for Indigenous rights, culturally safe working environments and access to dignified and respectful healthcare service. This study highlights the need for IHP to be actively involved in health system transformation to ensure the redesigning and restructuring of healthcare service delivery by and for Indigenous Peoples remains centered on Indigenous health and human rights.
Traditional healing as mental health intervention: Contemporary insights from an American Indian healer.

Abstract:Contemporary American Indian communities experience a disproportionately high rate of specific mental health concerns, including psychiatric disorders as defined by professional psychology. Although integrating mainstream mental health services and Indigenous traditional healing (ITH) has been presented as a promising approach to addressing these inequities, such integration necessitates in-depth exploration and consideration of ITH. To that effect, this article provides a thematic analysis of an interview with an urban American Indian traditional healer who reflected on more than 4 decades of therapeutic experience. Based on this analysis, we identified two major themes. The first theme, Expansive View of ITH , reflects this healer's conceptualization and understanding of the therapeutic process while the second theme, Guiding Principles of ITH, explicates the foundational commitments that shape and guide this healer's application and practice of ITH. These insights reinforce previous observations made by scholars of Indigenous health and well-being that challenge dominant Euro-American perspectives and call for transformative change in psychology research and practice, advocating for professional consideration of a broader range of therapeutic rationales, traditions, and practices than what is common within the field. Abstract:This introduction provides an overview to a special issue on Critical Healing, which draws on queer theory, disability studies, postcolonial theory, and literary studies to theorize productive engagements between the clinical and cultural aspects of biomedical knowledge and practice. The essays in this issue historicize and theorize diagnosis, particularly diagnosis that impacts trans health and sexuality, homosexuality, and HIV/AIDS transmission. The essays also address racialization, disability, and colonialism through discussions of fiction, film, theoretical memoir, and comics, as well as biomedical discourse and knowledge.
Social Suffering: Indigenous Peoples' Experiences of Accessing Mental Health and Substance Use Services

Abstract:In this paper, we present findings from a qualitative study that explored Indigenous people's experiences of mental health and addictions care in the context of an inner-city area in Western Canada. Using an ethnographic design, a total of 39 clients accessing 5 community-based mental health care agencies were interviewed, including 18 in-depth individual interviews and 4 focus groups. Health care providers also were interviewed (n = 24). Data analysis identified four intersecting themes: normalization of social suffering; re-creation of trauma; the challenge of reconciling constrained lives with harm reduction; and mitigating suffering through relational practice. The results highlight the complexities of experiences of accessing systems of care for Indigenous people marginalized by poverty and other forms of social inequity, and the potential harms that arise from inattention to the intersecting social context(s) of peoples' lives. Service delivery that aims to address the mental health concerns of Indigenous people must be designed with awareness of, and responsiveness to, the impact of structural violence and social suffering on peoples' lived realities. A relational policy and policy lens is key to alleviate patterns of social suffering and counter the harms that are unwittingly created when social suffering is normalized.

Abstract:Introduction: Women play a significant role in the management of their own healthcare and that of others, however women diagnosed with mental illness and physical health concerns experience significant health inequalities as compared to people living without mental health concerns. Methods: In this paper, we reflect on the experiences of 20 cis women diagnosed with mental and physical health concerns who agreed to be a part of this research. This qualitative study is part of the larger Healthtalk Australia research project which was not gender specific. Female participants shared many experiences of mental and physical healthcare in interviews with researchers that pointed to the need for a gendered approach to addressing health inequalities. Consequently, we iteratively consolidated transcripts of interviews with participants into thematic categories facilitated by NVIVO 12. Results: We identified two broad themes and a set of subthemes: in the doctor's office – experience of labelling; negotiating medications; and interactions with physical and mental health, and outside the doctor's office – responses to trauma, financial concerns, and reliance on participant's internal resources to get healthcare needs met. Discussion: We conclude that participants in this study undertook significant work to manage their own healthcare needs, despite being challenged by clinicians and systems that failed to see them as whole people with expertise regarding their own health.
