Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) technology has gained growing popularity in various applications. In this paper we propose a system based on affordable EEG devices to enhance music experience. Music is one of the major stimuli to which a brain responds. And the effect of music to our mood has long been recognized. Traditional music recommendation systems usually ignore the emotional effects of music on the users, but depend only on users' feedback through rating. With EEG device, it's possible to establish one's emotional profile while music listening, and thus design an emotion-based music recommendation engine. In this work, we present our effort on this research by exploiting how EEG could be applied to enhance the traditional music listening experience. Our research demonstrated that EEG applications should not be just limited in clinical field, but can be accessible to the public for broad use. In our system, we adopt an inexpensive EEG device (Emotiv EEG) to monitor brain activity in music listening to reflect emotional responses, and use mobile phone and Cloud based architecture to host the processing and recommendation algorithms to recognize, interpret and process EEG/music data. Such architecture is low cost, publicly accessible and generic to realize a wide class of brain informatics applications based on EEG.
EEG2Mel: Reconstructing Sound from Brain Responses to Music

Abstract:Information retrieval from brain responses to auditory and visual stimuli has shown success through classification of song names and image classes presented to participants while recording EEG signals. Information retrieval in the form of reconstructing auditory stimuli has also shown some success, but here we improve on previous methods by reconstructing music stimuli well enough to be perceived and identified independently. Furthermore, deep learning models were trained on time-aligned music stimuli spectrum for each corresponding one-second window of EEG recording, which greatly reduces feature extraction steps needed when compared to prior studies. The NMED-Tempo and NMED-Hindi datasets of participants passively listening to full length songs were used to train and validate Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) regressors. The efficacy of raw voltage versus power spectrum inputs and linear versus mel spectrogram outputs were tested, and all inputs and outputs were converted into 2D images. The quality of reconstructed spectrograms was assessed by training classifiers which showed 81% accuracy for mel-spectrograms and 72% for linear spectrograms (10% chance accuracy). Lastly, reconstructions of auditory music stimuli were discriminated by listeners at an 85% success rate (50% chance) in a two-alternative match-to-sample task.

Abstract:This research study aims to use machine learning methods to characterize the EEG response to music. Specifically, we investigate how resonance in the EEG response correlates with individual aesthetic enjoyment. Inspired by the notion of musical processing as resonance, we hypothesize that the intensity of an aesthetic experience is based on the degree to which a participants EEG entrains to the perceptual input. To test this and other hypotheses, we have built an EEG dataset from 20 subjects listening to 12 two minute-long songs in random order. After preprocessing and feature construction, we used this dataset to train and test multiple machine learning models.

Music emotion recognition based on temporal convolutional attention network using EEG

Abstract:Music is one of the primary ways to evoke human emotions. However, the feeling of music is subjective, making it difficult to determine which emotions music triggers in a given individual. In order to correctly identify emotional problems caused by different types of music, we first created an electroencephalogram (EEG) data set stimulated by four different types of music (fear, happiness, calm, and sadness). Secondly, the differential entropy features of EEG were extracted, and then the emotion recognition model CNN-SA-BiLSTM was established to extract the temporal features of EEG, and the recognition performance of the model was improved by using the global perception ability of the self-attention mechanism. The effectiveness of the model was further verified by the ablation experiment. The classification accuracy of this method in the valence and arousal dimensions is 93.45% and 96.36%, respectively. By applying our method to a publicly available EEG dataset DEAP, we evaluated the generalization and reliability of our method. In addition, we further investigate the effects of different EEG bands and multi-band combinations on music emotion recognition, and the results confirm relevant neuroscience studies. Compared with other representative music emotion recognition works, this method has better classification performance, and provides a promising framework for the future research of emotion recognition system based on brain computer interface.

Abstract:To establish when lymphadenopathy associated virus or human T lymphotropic virus (LAV/HTLV-III) was introduced into the Netherlands, we studied a cohort of homosexual men who participated in a hepatitis B vaccine efficacy study between 1980 and 1982. On entry into the study (November 1980 to December 1981) five (0.7%) out of 685 participants were found to have antibodies to LAV/HTLV-III, and during follow up 15 seroconversions were detected among the 680 who had been seronegative initially (end point attack rate 3%). LAV/HTLV-III was not transmitted by the heat inactivated hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine used. Anal sexual contact and antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV) were found to correlate with seropositivity or seroconversion for LAV/HTLV-III. Six out of 15 men who seroconverted reported a mononucleosis like illness, but three of them had other concurrent virus infections. To date, only one of the 20 seropositive men has developed the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), three years after his seroconversion. This study shows that the introduction of LAV/HTLV-III into the Dutch male homosexual community took place at the end of the 1970s, a few years before the first case of AIDS in a native Dutchman.
Musical NeuroPicks: A consumer-grade BCI for on-demand music streaming services

Abstract:We investigated the possibility of using a machine-learning scheme in conjunction with commercial wearable EEG-devices for translating listener's subjective experience of music into scores that can be used in popular on-demand music streaming services. Our study resulted into two variants, differing in terms of performance and execution time, and hence, subserving distinct applications in online streaming music platforms. The first method, NeuroPicks, is extremely accurate but slower. It is based on the well-established neuroscientific concepts of brainwave frequency bands, activation asymmetry index and cross frequency coupling (CFC). The second method, NeuroPicksVQ, offers prompt predictions of lower credibility and relies on a custom-built version of vector quantization procedure that facilitates a novel parameterization of the music-modulated brainwaves. Beyond the feature engineering step, both methods exploit the inherent efficiency of extreme learning machines (ELMs) so as to translate, in a personalized fashion, the derived patterns into a listener's score. NeuroPicks method may find applications as an integral part of contemporary music recommendation systems, while NeuroPicksVQ can control the selection of music tracks. Encouraging experimental results, from a pragmatic use of the systems, are presented.

Abstract:This paper highlights the ability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) at classifying EEG data listening to different kinds of music without the requirement for handcrafted features. Deep learning architectures presented in this paper include CNN of different depths and different convolutional kernels. Support vector machine (SVM) taking in EEG features describing the frequency spectrum, signal regularity, and cross-channel correlation has been applied for performance comparison with CNN. The best performing CNN model presented in this paper achieves the tenfold cross-validation (CV) binary classification average accuracy of 98.94% (validation) and 97.46% (test), and the tenfold CV three-class classification accuracy of 97.68% (validation) and 95.71% (test). In comparison, the SVM classifier achieves tenfold CV binary classification accuracy of 80.23% (validation). The CNN model presented is able to not only differentiate EEG of subjects listening to music from that of subjects without auditory input, but it is also capable of accurately differentiating the EEG of subjects listening to different music. In the context of designing neural computing models for EEG analysis, this paper shows that decomposing two-dimensional spatiotemporal convolutional kernels into separate one-dimensional spatial and one-dimensional temporal kernels significantly reduces the number of trainable parameters (size) of the model while retaining the classification performance. This finding is useful, especially in designing CNN for memory-critical embedded systems for EEG processing. In neurological aspect, auditory stimulus is found to have altered the EEG pattern of the frontal lobe and the left cerebral hemisphere more than the other brain regions.

Abstract:During the COVID-19 pandemic, young people are using multimedia content more frequently to communicate with each other on Internet platforms. Among them, music, as psychological support for a lonely life in this special period, is a powerful tool for emotional self-regulation and getting rid of loneliness. More and more attention has been paid to the music recommender system based on emotion. In recent years, Chinese music has tended to be considered an independent genre. Chinese ancient-style music is one of the new folk music styles in Chinese music and is becoming more and more popular among young people. The complexity of Chinese-style music brings significant challenges to the quantitative calculation of music. To effectively solve the problem of emotion classification in music information search, emotion is often characterized by valence and arousal. This paper focuses on the valence and arousal classification of Chinese ancient-style music-evoked emotion. It proposes a hybrid one-dimensional convolutional neural network and bidirectional and unidirectional long short-term memory model (1D-CNN-BiLSTM). And a self-acquisition EEG dataset for Chinese college students was designed to classify music-induced emotion by valence-arousal based on EEG. In addition to that, the proposed 1D-CNN-BILSTM model verified the performance of public datasets DEAP and DREAMER, as well as the self-acquisition dataset DESC. The experimental results show that, compared with traditional LSTM and 1D-CNN-LSTM models, the proposed method has the highest accuracy in the valence classification task of music-induced emotion, reaching 94.85%, 98.41%, and 99.27%, respectively. The accuracy of the arousal classification task also gained 93.40%, 98.23%, and 99.20%, respectively. In addition, compared with the positive valence classification results of emotion, this method has obvious advantages in negative valence classification. This study provides a computational classification model for a music recommender system with emotion. It also provides some theoretical support for the brain-computer interactive (BCI) application products of Chinese ancient-style music which is popular among young people.

Classification of Brainwave Signals Based on Hybrid Deep Learning and an Evolutionary Algorithm

Abstract:Brainwave signals are read through Electroencephalogram (EEG) devices. These signals are generated from an active brain based on brain activities and thoughts. The classification of brainwave signals is a challenging task due to its non-stationary nature. To address the issue, this paper proposes a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to classify brainwave signals. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed model a dataset is developed by recording brainwave signals for two conditions, which are visible and invisible. In the visible mode, the human subjects focus on the color and shape presented. Meanwhile, in the invisible mode, the subjects think about specific colors or shapes with closed eyes. A comparison has been provided between the original CNN and the proposed CNN architecture on the same dataset. The results show that the proposed CNN model achieves higher classification accuracy as compared to the standard CNN. The best accuracy rate achieved when the proposed CNN is applied on the visible color mode is 92%. In the future, improvements on the proposed CNN will be able to classify raw EEG signals in an efficient way.

[Neuritic leprosy disclosed by reversal reaction].

Abstract:We report a case of neuritic borderline tuberculoid leprosy with lingering insidious growth disclosed by a brutal reversal reaction. Inflammatory polyarthralgia and sensory and motor loss in the median and ulnar territories, without skin lesions, suggested vasculitis. A few weeks later, inflammatory skin lesions developed leading to the diagnosis of biopsy proven leprosy. Leprosy should be considered as a possible diagnosis in patients with multineuritis, especially when associated with rheumatic or cutaneous manifestations. Early skin biopsy in neuritic leprosy is discussed.
Using Deep Learning to Recognize Therapeutic Effects of Music Based on Emotions

Abstract:Music is important in everyday life, and music therapy can help treat a variety of health issues. Music listening is a technique used by music therapists in various clinical treatments. As a result, music therapists must have an intelligent system at their disposal to assist and support them in selecting the most appropriate music for each patient. Previous research has not thoroughly addressed the relationship between music features and their effects on patients. The current paper focuses on identifying and predicting whether music has therapeutic benefits. A machine learning model is developed, using a multi-class neural network to classify emotions into four categories and then predict the output. The neural network developed has three layers: (i) an input layer with multiple features; (ii) a deep connected hidden layer; (iii) an output layer. K-Fold Cross Validation was used to assess the estimator. The experiment aims to create a machine-learning model that can predict whether a specific song has therapeutic effects on a specific person. The model considers a person's musical and emotional characteristics but is also trained to consider solfeggio frequencies. During the training phase, a subset of the Million Dataset is used. The user selects their favorite type of music and their current mood to allow the model to make a prediction. If the selected song is inappropriate, the application, using Machine Learning, recommends another type of music that may be useful for that specific user. An ongoing study is underway to validate the Machine Learning model. The developed system has been tested on many individuals. Because it achieved very good performance indicators, the proposed solution can be used by music therapists or even patients to select the appropriate song for their treatment.

Abstract:With the advancement of modern medical concepts, the beneficial effects of music on human health have gradually become accepted, and the corresponding music therapy has gradually become a new research direction that has received much attention in recent years. However, folk music has certain peculiarities that lead to the fact that there is no efficient way of selecting repertoire that can be carried out directly throughout the repertoire selection. This paper combines deep learning theory with ethnomusic therapy based on previous research and proposes a deep learning-based approach to ethnomusic therapy song selection. Since the feature extraction process in the traditional sense has insufficient information on each frame, excessive redundancy, inability to process multiple frames of continuous music signals containing relevant music features and weak noise immunity, it increases the computational effort and reduces the efficiency of the system. To address the above shortcomings, this paper introduces deep learning methods into the feature extraction process, combining the feature extraction process of the Deep Auto-encoder (DAE) with the music classification process of Gaussian mixture model, which forms a new DAE-GMM music classification model. Finally, in terms of music therapy selection, this paper compares the music selection method based on co-matrix and physiological signal with the one in this paper. From the theoretical and simulation plots, it can be seen that the method proposed in this paper can achieve both good music classifications from a large number of music and further optimize the process of music therapy song selection from both subjective and objective aspects by considering the therapeutic effect of music on patients. Through this article research results found that the depth of optimization feature vector to construct double the accuracy of the classifier is higher, in addition, compared with the characteristics of the original optimization classification model, using the gaussian mixture model can more accurately classify music, the original landscape "hometown" score of 0.9487, is preferred, insomnia patients mainly ceramic flute style soft tone, without excitant, low depression, have composed of nourishing the heart function.
DDMD: AI-Powered Digital Drug Music Detector

Abstract:We present the first version of DDMD (Digital Drug Music Detector), a binary classifier that distinguishes digital drug music from normal music. In the literature, digital drug music is primarily explored regarding its psychological, neurological, or social impact. However, despite numerous studies on using machine learning in Music Information Retrieval (MIR), including music genre classification, digital drug music has not been considered in this field. In this study, we initially collected a dataset of 3,176 audio files divided into two classes (1,676 digital drugs and 1,500 non-digital drugs). We extracted machine learning features, including MFCCs, chroma, spectral contrast, and frequency analysis metrics (mean and standard deviation of detected frequencies). Using a Random Forest classifier, we achieved an accuracy of 93%. Finally, we developed a web application to deploy the model, enabling end users to detect digital drug music.

Abstract:With the rapid development of information technology and communication, digital music has grown and exploded. Regarding how to quickly and accurately retrieve the music that users want from huge bulk of music repository, music feature extraction and classification are considered as an important part of music information retrieval and have become a research hotspot in recent years. Traditional music classification approaches use a large number of artificially designed acoustic features. The design of features requires knowledge and in-depth understanding in the domain of music. The features of different classification tasks are often not universal and comprehensive. The existing approach has two shortcomings as follows: ensuring the validity and accuracy of features by manually extracting features and the traditional machine learning classification approaches not performing well on multiclassification problems and not having the ability to be trained on large-scale data. Therefore, this paper converts the audio signal of music into a sound spectrum as a unified representation, avoiding the problem of manual feature selection. According to the characteristics of the sound spectrum, the research has combined 1D convolution, gating mechanism, residual connection, and attention mechanism and proposed a music feature extraction and classification model based on convolutional neural network, which can extract more relevant sound spectrum characteristics of the music category. Finally, this paper designs comparison and ablation experiments. The experimental results show that this approach is better than traditional manual models and machine learning-based approaches.

Abstract:Abstract Objective. The aesthetic evaluation of music is strongly dependent on the listener and reflects manifold brain processes that go well beyond the perception of incident sound. Being a high-level cognitive reaction, it is difficult to predict merely from the acoustic features of the audio signal and this poses serious challenges to contemporary music recommendation systems. We attempted to decode music appraisal from brain activity, recorded via wearable EEG, during music listening. Approach. To comply with the dynamic nature of music stimuli, cross-frequency coupling measurements were employed in a time-evolving manner to capture the evolving interactions between distinct brain-rhythms during music listening. Brain response to music was first represented as a continuous flow of functional couplings referring to both regional and inter-regional brain dynamics and then modelled as an ensemble of time-varying (sub)networks. Dynamic graph centrality measures were derived, next, as the final feature-engineering step and, lastly, a support-vector machine was trained to decode the subjective music appraisal. A carefully designed experimental paradigm provided the labeled brain signals. Main results. Using data from 20 subjects, dynamic programming to tailor the decoder to each subject individually and cross-validation, we demonstrated highly satisfactory performance (MAE= 0.948, R 2 = 0.63) that can be attributed, mostly, to interactions of left frontal gamma rhythm. In addition, our music-appraisal decoder was also employed in a part of the DEAP dataset with similar success. Finally, even a generic version of the decoder (common for all subjects) was found to perform sufficiently. Significance. A novel brain signal decoding scheme was introduced and validated empirically on suitable experimental data. It requires simple operations and leaves room for real-time implementation. Both the code and the experimental data are publicly available.

Recording Brain Activity While Listening to Music Using Wearable EEG Devices Combined with Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Networks

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are crucial for investigating brain function and cognitive processes. This study aims to address the challenges of efficiently recording and analyzing high-dimensional EEG signals while listening to music to recognize emotional states. We propose a method combining Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) networks with attention mechanisms for EEG signal processing. Using wearable EEG devices, we collected brain activity data from participants listening to music. The data was preprocessed, segmented, and Differential Entropy (DE) features were extracted. We then constructed and trained a Bi-LSTM model to enhance key feature extraction and improve emotion recognition accuracy. Experiments were conducted on the SEED and DEAP datasets. The Bi-LSTM-AttGW model achieved 98.28% accuracy on the SEED dataset and 92.46% on the DEAP dataset in multi-class emotion recognition tasks, significantly outperforming traditional models such as SVM and EEG-Net. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of combining Bi-LSTM with attention mechanisms, providing robust technical support for applications in brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and affective computing. Future work will focus on improving device design, incorporating multimodal data, and further enhancing emotion recognition accuracy, aiming to achieve practical applications in real-world scenarios.

Based on the established -neuroscientifically sound- concepts of brainwave frequency bands, activation asymmetry index and cross-frequency-coupling (CFC), we introduce a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) system that automatically assigns a rating score to the listened song. Our research operated in two distinct stages: i) a generic feature engineering stage, in which features from signal-analytics were ranked and selected based on their ability to associate music induced perturbations in brainwaves with listener's appraisal of music. ii) a personalization stage, during which the efficiency of ex- treme learning machines (ELMs) is exploited so as to translate the derived pat- terns into a listener's score. Encouraging experimental results, from a pragmatic use of the system, are presented.

Abstract:The study of electroencephalography (EEG) signals is not a new topic. However, the analysis of human emotions upon exposure to music considered as important direction. Although distributed in various academic databases, research on this concept is limited. To extend research in this area, the researchers explored and analysed the academic articles published within the mentioned scope. Thus, in this paper a systematic review is carried out to map and draw the research scenery for EEG human emotion into a taxonomy. Systematically searched all articles about the, EEG human emotion based music in three main databases: ScienceDirect, Web of Science and IEEE Xplore from 1999 to 2016. These databases feature academic studies that used EEG to measure brain signals, with a focus on the effects of music on human emotions. The screening and filtering of articles were performed in three iterations. In the first iteration, duplicate articles were excluded. In the second iteration, the articles were filtered according to their titles and abstracts, and articles outside of the scope of our domain were excluded. In the third iteration, the articles were filtered by reading the full text and excluding articles outside of the scope of our domain and which do not meet our criteria. Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 100 articles were selected and separated into five classes. The first class includes 39 articles (39%) consists of emotion, wherein various emotions are classified using artificial intelligence (AI). The second class includes 21 articles (21%) is composed of studies that use EEG techniques. This class is named ‘brain condition’. The third class includes eight articles (8%) is related to feature extraction, which is a step before emotion classification. That this process makes use of classifiers should be noted. However, these articles are not listed under the first class because these eight articles focus on feature extraction rather than classifier accuracy. The fourth class includes 26 articles (26%) comprises studies that compare between or among two or more groups to identify and discover human emotion-based EEG. The final class includes six articles (6%) represents articles that study music as a stimulus and its impact on brain signals. Then, discussed the five main categories which are action types, age of the participants, and number size of the participants, duration of recording and listening to music and lastly countries or authors’ nationality that published these previous studies. it afterward recognizes the main characteristics of this promising area of science in: motivation of using EEG process for measuring human brain signals, open challenges obstructing employment and recommendations to improve the utilization of EEG process.

Abstract:Brain computer interface and EEG signal recognition are not only hot issues in the field of human-computer interaction, but also advanced military technologies that can be applied in the future. At present, EEG signals are mainly divided into two categories: evoked EEG signals and spontaneous EEG signals. This paper proposes two classification frameworks of EEG signals: data preprocessing according to the characteristics of EEG signals through machine learning and convolutional neural network, obtaining tag events, and setting the data range corresponding to each tag as samples. Convolutional neural network and channel based attention mechanism are used to improve the classification accuracy of EEG signals. Finally, for the five subjects, the classification accuracy was 89.4%, 87.2%, 89.1%, 87.8% and 87.9% respectively, and the classification rounds were less than 5 times. Finally, the characters with the most times in the EEG interface were obtained.

Abstract:National music is a treasure of Chinese traditional culture. It contains the cultural characteristics of various regions and reflects the core value of Chinese traditional culture. Classification technology classifies a large number of unorganized drama documents, which are not labeled, and to some extent, it helps folk music better enter the lives of ordinary people. Simulate folk music of different spectrum and record corresponding music audio under laboratory conditions Through Fourier transform and other methods, music audio is converted into spectrogram, and a total of 2608 two-dimensional spectrogram images are obtained as datasets. The sonogram dataset is imported into the deep convolution neural network GoogLeNet for music type recognition, and the test accuracy is 99.6%. In addition, the parallel GoogLeNet technology based on inverse autoregressive flow is used. The unique improvement is that acoustic features can be quickly converted into corresponding speech time-domain waveforms, reaching the real-time level, improving the efficiency of model training and loading, and outputting speech with higher naturalness. In order to further prove the reliability of the experimental results, the spectrogram datasets are imported into Resnet18 and Shufflenet for training, and the test accuracy of 99.2% is obtained. The results show that this method can effectively classify and recognize music. The experimental results show that this scheme can achieve more accurate classification. The research realizes the recognition of national music through deep learning spectrogram classification for the first time, which is an intelligent and fast new method of classification and recognition.
