Abstract:OBJECTIVES:Hyperuricaemia is closely related to metabolic diseases and is receiving increasing attention from all over the world. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with hyperuricaemia in non-obese Chinese population.DESIGN:Retrospective cross-sectional study.SETTING:A large general hospital that can provide health check-ups in Hangzhou, China.PARTICIPANTS:A total of 5731 apparently healthy Chinese adults (2349 men and 3382 women) who took their health check-ups during the year of 2019.EXCLUSION CRITERIA:(1) those with body mass index ≥24 kg/m2; (2) those with incomplete anthropometric and biochemical data; (3) those with a history of malignancy and (4) those under urate-lowering treatment.PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES:The prevalence and factors associated with hyperuricaemia in non-obese Chinese adults.RESULTS:Of the 5731 non-obese subjects enrolled, 538 (9.4%) were identified as having hyperuricaemia, specifically 16.3% in men and 4.6% in women. The prevalence of hyperuricaemia markedly increased in women aged above 50 years. The prevalence of hyperuricaemia was significantly higher in metabolically unhealthy participants with normal weight than in metabolically healthy participants with normal weight. Participants with hyperuricaemia showed a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome and fatty liver disease than participants with normouraemia. Age, waist circumference, estimated glomerular filtration rate, blood urea nitrogen, excessive drinking and fatty liver were associated with hyperuricaemia in both genders.CONCLUSION:The prevalence of hyperuricaemia was 9.4% in non-obese Chinese adults. Non-obese participants with hyperuricaemia also showed multiple metabolic disorders. We suggest that clinicians pay attention to serum uric acid level in non-obese patients.
Association Between Serum Uric Acid Levels and Dyslipidemia in Chinese Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study and Further Meta-Analysis.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the association of serum uric acid (SUA) levels with dyslipidemia and its components and to further explore the age- and gender-specific association of SUA levels with dyslipidemia in Chinese adults.A cross-sectional study was performed among 8642 adults who underwent health examinations. A meta-analysis covering 17 studies was conducted to confirm the results.The prevalence of hyperuricemia and dyslipidemia was 9.25% and 20.44%, respectively. Participants with hyperuricemia had higher prevalence of dyslipidemia than those without hyperuricemia (34.42% vs 19.01%, P < .005). Compared with participants with SUA in the first quintile, the odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval) of dyslipidemia in the second, third, fourth, and fifth quintiles of SUA were 1.095 (0.901-1.332), 1.582 (1.315-1.904), 2.095 (1.752-2.505), and 3.212 (2.702-3.818), respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that SUA quintiles were significantly correlated with the likelihood of dyslipidemia in females aged > 50 years and in males, but not in females aged ≤50 years. The meta-analysis also showed that hyperuricemia increased the likelihood of dyslipidemia and the pooled OR for the highest uric acid level vs the lowest uric acid level was 1.84 (1.49-2.28).SUA levels are significantly associated with dyslipidemia, and this association is impacted by age and gender.
Clinical Value Of Serum Lipid Profile And Renal Function For The Management Of Hyperuricemia In Adults In Southern China

Abstract:Aim: To examine associations of serum lipid profile and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with hyperuricemia (HUA) and to identify the clinical value of serum lipid profile and renal function for the management of HUA. Method: A Chinese Han population of 11,501 residents (6229 men, 5272 women) aged over 18 years who visited the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China, for routine medical examination was enrolled between January 2009 and December 2013. The relationships of lipid concentrations and eGFR to HUA were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: The prevalence of HUA was 22.80% in 11,501 participants aged 18-96 years. It was higher among men than among women (32.03% vs. 11.96%, P < 0.01). Men aged < 30 years had a greater HUA burden (P < 0.05), and the prevalence of HUA increased significantly in women after the age of 50 years (P < 0.01). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the odds ratios (ORs) of HUA in the high triglyceride (TG), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) groups were 2.66, 1.82, and 1.17 times higher, respectively, than those of normal TG, LDL-c, and HDL-c groups. The ORs of HUA among participants with mild and moderate eGFR decline were 1.29 and 2.29 times those of the normal eGFR group, respectively (P < 0.01). Conclusion: HUA is prevalent in Guangzhou City, southern China. Treatment to improve renal function and target hyperlipidemia, particularly hypertriglyceridemia, may have beneficial effects on lowering serum uric acid levels.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate prevalences of hyperuricemia and the metabolic syndrome (MS) in the Hangzhou population, and the relationship between serum uric acid and the MS. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 4155 subjects (2614 men and 1541 women) aged 20-80 years, recruited through a health check program in Hangzhou, China. Biochemical and haematological parameters were measured by standard methods. The diagnosis of the MS is made when three or four of the following criteria are met: 1) body mess index (BMI) >= 25; 2) systolic blood pressure >= 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure >= 25; 2) systolic blood pressure >= 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg; 3) fasting triacyglycerol >= 90 mmHg; 3) fasting triacyglycerol > 1.7 mmol/L (150 mg/dL), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) < 0.9 mmol/L (35 mg/dL) in men and <1.0 mmol/L (39 mg/dL) in women; 4) fasting glucose >= 6.1 mmol/L (109 mg/dL). Hyperuricemia is defined by cut-off values of >420 mu mol/L for men and > 360 mu mol/L for women. Prevalences were 16.9% (N=702) for hyperuricemia and 8.4% (N=349) for the MS. Serum uric acid concentration was significantly higher in mates than in females (p<0.0001), and significantly higher in subjects with obesity, dyslipidemia and hypertension compared with those without. In the partial correlation analysis, after controlling for gender, age and creatinine, serum uric acid concentration was significantly positively correlated with BMI (r=0.301, p<0.0001), systolic blood pressure (r=0.151, p<0.0001), diastolic blood pressure (r=0.168, p<0.0001), total cholesterol (r=0.144, p<0.0001) and triacyglycerol (r=0.234, p<0.0001). Results suggest that increased serum uric acid concentration is associated with an increased prevalence of metabolic disorders such as obesity, dyslipidemia and hypertension in the Hangzhou population.
Triglyceride Glucose Index Is More Closely Related to Hyperuricemia Than Obesity Indices in the Medical Checkup Population in Xinjiang, China

Abstract:Background Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a metabolic anomaly with an increased incidence rate, causing a global medical burden. Several studies have confirmed that obesity and insulin resistance (IR) are the risk factors for HUA. Reports on the predictive power of different obesity indices for HUA are limited. This study aimed to compare the association between different general, abdominal, and visceral obesity indices and markers of the IR-triglyceride glucose (TyG) index with serum uric acid (SUA) and to assess the ability of these indices to predict HUA. Methods A total of 2243 participants were recruited from Barkol County Hospital and surrounding township hospitals in Xinjiang. Obesity indices, including the atherogenic index of plasma, cardiometabolic index, visceral adiposity index, lipid accumulation product index, a body shape index, body roundness index, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, body mass index, and TyG index, were divided into four quartiles. Moreover, partial correlations and logistic regression were used to analyze the association between these indices and SUA. The area under the curve (AUC) and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to analyze the predictive value of these indices for HUA. Results After controlling for confounding variables, the association between the TyG index and HUA was stronger than that between the obesity indices in both males and females. The odds ratios (ORs) for HUA in the highest quartile of the TyG index were 2.098 (95% confidence interval, 1.555–2.831) in males and 7.788 (95% CI, 3.581–16.937) in females. For males, the AIP, CMI, VAI, LAP index, and TyG index were able to discriminate HUA, and the TyG index showed the highest AUC value of 0.586 (95% CI, 0.557–0.614; P < 0.001). For females, all indices, except BMI, can discriminate HUA. Moreover, the visceral obesity index CMI showed the highest AUC value of 0.737 (95% CI, 0.691–0.782; P < 0.001). Meanwhile, the TyG index had a relatively high AUC value of 0.728 (95% CI, 0.682–0.773; P < 0.001). Conclusion The TyG index was significantly related to HUA and was superior to obesity indices in identifying HUA in the medical checkup population in Xinjiang, China.

Abstract:The effects of benanomicin A, a mannose‐binding antifungal antibiotic, on yeast cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were studied by electron microscopy. Cytological studies using vital stain with methylene blue demonstrated that benanomicin A at 20 and 80 μg/ml killed buds in preference to parent cells. In confirmation, examination by TEM revealed that benanomicin A at 80 μg/ml damaged buds more severely than parent cells. The major effect on the ultrastructure was characterized by severe damage to the cell membrane. In addition, it caused expansion and vacuolation of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and partial fragmentation and disappearance of nuclear membranes. The membrane‐disruptive activity of benanomicin A may be closely associated with its membrane affinity.

Abstract:Aim: To investigate the prevalence of hyperuricemia and the association between the serum uric acid (SUA) levels and incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the Mongolian area of China. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was based on a population of 1,426 subjects (809 men and 617 women) 20-80 years of age who were recruited from Inner Mongolia, China. Metabolic and anthropometric indicators were measured according to standard methods. Hyperuricemia was defined as an SUA level of >= 7.0 mg/dL for men and >= 6.0 mg/dL for women. MetS was diagnosed based on the consensus criteria released in 2009 from a joint collaboration organization. Results: The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 17.7% in men and 5.2% in women. The prevalence of MetS in men was higher than that observed in women (36.7% vs 17.8%). Waist circumference, BMI and the level of triglycerides were most strongly correlated with the SUA level in both sexes. Men with hyperuricemia had an increased risk of MetS [OR (95% CI)= 2.95 (2.00-4.35)], while men with a "normal" SUA level (> 5.0 mg/dL and < 6.3 mg/dL) had a higher risk of MetS, central obesity and hypertriglyceridemia than men in the lower level group (<= 5 mg/dL). Women with a higher SUA level (>= 4.3 mg/dL) had an increased risk of MetS, central obesity, hypertriglyceridemia and hypertension compared with women in the lowest tertile SUA group (<= 3.5 mg/dL). Conclusions: The SUA level is significantly associated with various metabolic indicators. In this study, waist circumference and the level of triglycerides were most strongly correlated with the SUA level in both sexes. Individuals with a normal level of SUA had an increased risk of MetS and other metabolic disorders. Further research on appropriate cut-off values for pre-hyperuricemia is expected, and the early detection of hyperuricemia is essential for the prevention of MetS.
Positive Association Between Metabolic Syndrome and Serum Uric Acid in Wuhan.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The objective was to determine whether serum uric acid concentrations were associated with metabolic syndrome in a population from Wuhan. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN 5,628 subjects (2,838 men, 2,790 women) aged 18-80 years were recruited in Wuhan, China. Biochemical parameters of venous blood were measured by standard methods and metabolic syndrome was defined by Chinese Diabetes Society criteria. Association analysis was performed by logistic regression. RESULTS 8.2% of the included subjects were confirmed as having metabolic syndrome and 14.4% were confirmed as having hyperuricemia. After multivariable adjustment, logistic regression showed the odds ratios of metabolic syndrome for subjects in the highest quartile of serum uric acid concentration was 2.84 (95% CI: 2.09-3.86) compared with those in the lowest quartile and no gender difference was found. For each component of metabolic syndrome, subjects in the highest quartile of serum uric acid concentrations had increased multivariable odds ratios for high BMI (OR: 3.29, 95% CI: 2.71-3.98), for hypertension (OR: 3.54, 95% CI: 2.93-3.86), for dyslipidemia (OR: 2.49, 95% CI: 1.98-3.14), but not for hyperglycemia (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 0.87-1.67). CONCLUSIONS Odd ratio of metabolic syndrome was significantly positively associated with serum uric acid concentration among the present sample of 5,628 subjects in Wuhan.
Association of obesity, triglyceride-glucose and its derivatives index with risk of hyperuricemia among college students in Qingdao, China

Abstract:ObjectiveTo analyze and compare the associations of hyperuricemia (HUA) with obesity, triglyceride-glucose (TyG), and its derivatives in college students. To provide early guidance on risk predictors of HUA in college students. MethodsThis study was a cross-sectional survey including 23,411 participants (age: 17-20 years). Investigators conducted face-to-face interview surveys and physical examinations. Automated biochemical methods were used to detect biochemical indicators such as serum uric acid (UA). Calculation of obesity, TyG, and their derivatives indices were performed. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between different indexes and hyperuricemia. OR value and 95% CI were also calculated. ROC curve was used for assessing the predictive ability of different indices of hyperuricemia. ResultsAfter adjusting for age, SBP, DBP, ALT, AST, TC, BUN, and CREA, multivariate logistic regression showed that the OR value of LAP in the obesity index was higher, especially in women (male OR: 4.347, 95%CI: 3.807, 4.964; female OR: 4.672, 95%CI: 3.800, 5.744). The other three quartiles of TyG derivatives were highly associated with hyperuricemia in men and women compared with the top quartile (all P< 0.05). The risk of hyperuricemia increased with an increase in quartiles. For college students, all indicators could distinguish the presence of hyperuricemia. For men, the area under the curve (AUC) of TyG-WC was the largest (AUC: 0.694; 95%CI: 0.684-0.704; P<0.05), according to the Maximum Youden index 0.290 with cut point value 477.853. In women, TyG-BMI showed a maximum AUC value of 0.702 (95%CI: 0.685-0.719; P<0.05), according to the maximum Youden index of 0.317 with cut point value 132.446. The TyG-WC, TyG-WHtR, TyG-LAP, and LAP indices also had relatively high AUC. ConclusionIn clinical practice, LAP, TYG, and their related derivatives may be used as sensitive indicators for HUA prediction in college students.
Hyperuricemia prevalence and its association with metabolic disorders: a multicenter retrospective real-world study in China

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA) and gout continues to increase in China. Research suggests that HUA may be related to many diseases other than gout. However, further population research is required to investigate the association between HUA and metabolic syndromes. This study sought to investigate the prevalence of HUA in an average population in China, and the association between serum uric acid (UA) levels and related metabolic disorders.METHODS: This multicenter retrospective real-world study examined the hospital information system data of 4 tertiary hospitals in 3 provinces in China. The data of patients aged between 18 and 80 years, who had attended at least 1 medical appointment at which their UA level was recorded, were analyzed to evaluate associations between UA levels and metabolic disorders.RESULTS: Among the 374,506 enrolled subjects (49.7% male; mean age 51.5 years old), the overall prevalence of HUA and gout were 14.8% and 0.5%, respectively. The prevalence was higher among males than females (17.6% <i>vs.</i> 12.0%, 0.8% <i>vs.</i> 0.1%; both P<0.001). Groups exhibiting higher UA levels had increased adjusted odds ratios for dyslipidemia and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in both sexes. Changes in UA levels from the baseline were negatively correlated with changes in the estimated glomerular filtration rate and hemoglobin A1c among both sexes (all P<0.001), and were positively correlated with changes in total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (all P<0.05) among males, and changes in TC, TG, LDL-C and glucose (all P<0.001) among females.CONCLUSIONS: HUA is associated with dyslipidemia and CKD both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Similar phenomena were observed in both sexes.

Association between triglyceride glucose index and hyperuricemia: a new evidence from China and the United States

Abstract:Background: Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a glo\bal public health problem. The etiology of HUA is complex and efficient and accurate assessment metrics are still lacking when conducting large-scale epidemiologic screening. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, TyG-body mass index (BMI), TyG-waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) with the risk of HUA. Methods: Based on data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the United States and the China Health and Aging Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in China, a total of 14,286 U.S. adults and 4,620 Chinese adults were included in the analysis. The study examined the levels of TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WHtR, and TyG-WC. Multivariate logistic regression was utilized to investigate the relationships between these variables and hyperuricemia (HUA), separately. Additionally, the study used restricted cubic splines (RCS) to explore the linear associations of TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WHtR, TyG-WC, and HUA, separately. Results: The NHANES results showed that TyG [Q2, 1.58(1.26, 1.98); Q3, 2.36 (1.94, 2.88); Q4, 3.21 (2.61, 3.94)], TyG-BMI [Q2, 2.14 (1.74, 2.65); Q3, 3.38 (2.74, 4.17); Q4, 6.70 (5.55, 8.02)], TyG-WHtR [Q2, 1.92 (1.56, 2.36); Q3, 3.14 (2.56, 3.85); Q4, 6.28 (5.12, 7.69)], TyG-WC [Q2, 2.32 (1.85, 2.90); Q3, 3.51 (2.84, 4.34); Q4, 7.32 (5.95, 9.02)] were identified as risk factors for hyperuricemia (HUA). Similarly, the CHARLS results, when fully adjusted for covariates, indicated that TyG [Q4, 2.36 (1.08, 5.15)], TyG-BMI [Q3, 2.60 (1.05, 6.41); Q4, 3.70 (1.64, 8.32)], TyG-WHtR (Q4, 2.84 (1.23, 6.55), TyG-WC [Q4, 2.85 (1.23, 6.5)] were also risk factors for HUA. The predictive ability of each indicator for the risk of developing HUA was stronger in women than in men. Furthermore, there was an observed nonlinear relationship between TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WHtR, TyG-WC, and HUA in both the NHANES and CHARLS datasets (P-nonlinearity < 0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WHtR and TyG-WC are associated with an increased risk of HUA. They are potential indicators for screening HUA status in the general population in China and the United States.

However, the relationship between obesity metabolism indices and hyperuricemia in high-risk patients with hypertension and coronary heart disease (CHD) remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate this relationship in patients with both hypertension and CHD, and to identify the obesity metabolism index with the best diagnostic value. Methods: A two-center study encompassed 6344 participants with hypertension and CHD. Multiple logistic regression was utilized to examine the correlation between six obesity metabolism indices and hyperuricemia, with restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis to identify non-linear relationships. Diagnostic value was assessed via receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: Multivariable logistic regression revealed a significant correlation between increased obesity metabolism indices and hyperuricemia. Furthermore, RCS analysis revealed a nonlinear dose-response relationship (P for nonlinear < 0.001). Moreover, ROC and DCA results showed that METS-VF index, which combined visceral obesity and metabolic parameters, became the most reliable diagnostic tool. Conclusion: The study underscores a strong association between elevated obesity metabolism indices and hyperuricemia in patients with hypertension and CHD. The METS-VF index, amalgamating visceral obesity and metabolic parameters, emerged as the most reliable diagnostic tool. Keywords: obesity metabolism indices, hypertension, coronary heart disease, uric acid, hyperuricemia Uric acid (UA), a purine metabolite, accumulates in peripheral blood when its production is upregulated or excretion is diminished, culminating in hyperuricemia. 1,2 The prevalence of this condition has been escalating in tandem with enhancements in living standards and shifts in lifestyle habits. Current estimates indicate that approximately 15% of the adult population in China is affected by hyperuricemia. 3,4 Hyperuricemia has emerged as a pivotal risk factor implicated in a spectrum of disorders, including gout, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). 5–8 It has become a chronic disease that garners more public attention and poses a significant challenge to public health. 9 Thus, early identification and management of hyperuricemia may reduce the disease burden and prevent adverse outcomes associated with it. A substantial body of research has established the pertinence of UA to metabolic syndrome. 10–13 However, the specific contributions of various obesity-related metabolic indices to hyperuricemia are less well characterized. Emerging evidence underscores the potential significance of obesity and metabolic abnormalities in UA metabolism dysregulation, leading to hyperuricemia. 14–16 These conditions are also central to the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome. 17,18 Traditionally, indicators for assessing obesity and metabolism have tended to be homogeneous and lacking in accuracy. Conversely, a suite of more accessible compound markers predicated on obesity and metabolic profiles has been proposed, encompassing the triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C), the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, the TyG to body mass index (TyG-BMI) ratio, TyG in conjunction with waist circumference (TyG-WC), the metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR), and the metabolic score for visceral fat (METS-VF). 19–23 Individuals afflicted with hypertension and concomitant coronary heart disease (CHD) frequently exhibit obesity and a constellation of metabolic irregularities. 24–26 They are at an augmented risk for UA metabolism disturbances that may precipitate hyperuricemia, thereby exacerbating their susceptibility to CVD. Association between the Triglyceride Glucose Index and Hyperuricemia in Patients with Primary Hypertension: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Objective. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and hyperuricemia (HUA) in patients with grades 1–3 hypertension. Study Design. This is a cross-sectional study. A total of 1,707 patients from the cardiovascular department of Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were studied. In this study, 899 patients with grades 1-2 hypertension were included, of which 151 had HUA; additionally, 808 patients with grade 3 hypertension were included, of which 162 patients had HUA. This study obtained all patient data from the electronic medical record system of the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The TyG index was calculated as Ln (triglycerides × fasting glucose/2). Hyperuricemia was defined as uric acid ≥420 μmol/L (7 mg/dL). Multivariate logistic regression, penalized spline regression, and generalized additive models were used to evaluate the association between the TyG index and HUA. Stratified analyses were performed to assess the association in populations with different grades of hypertension. Results. The average TyG index was 8.71 ± 0.58. After adjusting for correlated variables, the logistic regression analysis revealed a positive correlation between the TyG index and HUA (OR = 1.83; 95% CI: 1.40–2.39). Smooth curve fitting showed that this correlation was linear in the whole range of the TyG index. In the subgroup analysis, the TyG index more strongly associated with HUA in the grades 1-2 hypertension group (OR = 2.22; 95% CI: 1.44–3.42) compared to that in the grade 3 hypertension group (OR = 1.58; 95% CI: 1.11–2.24; P for interaction = 0.03). In addition, this association was consistent in all models. Conclusion. The TyG index was positively associated with HUA in patients with hypertension, and the association was more strongly confirmed in those with grades 1-2 hypertension rather than in those with grade 3 hypertension.

Abstract:Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has attracted great interest, with an increasing prevalence. Recent studies have shown that the serum uric acid-to-creatinine ratio (SUACr) might be an excellent biomarker for MetS risk prediction in diabetic patients and postmenopausal women. However, the relationship between SUACr and MetS in a middle-aged and older population remains unclear. Methods: A total of 1277 participants were included in this cross-sectional study. Logistic regression modelling was performed to assess the association between SUACr and MetS in the total population. The dose–response relationship of SUACr and MetS was further assessed by a restricted cubic spline model (RCS). Furthermore, to explore the relationships between the levels of SUACr and the number of metabolic components, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was applied. Results: The levels of SUACr were lower in the non-MetS participants (OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.36 to 1.89; P <0.001),. Positive and dose–response relationships were further confirmed by the RCS model. We also found that, with increased number of components, the SUACr tended to increase. Moreover, values of SUACr were strongly related to levels of triglycerides (TGs), body mass index (BMI), blood glucose levels, systolic blood pressure/diastolic blood pressure (SBP/DBP), and hypertension. In addition, the positive association between SUACr and MetS also occurred in those patients with normal uric acid levels. Conclusion: Elevated values of SUACr were strongly associated with an increased risk of MetS; this positive relationship remained in those individuals with normal uric acid levels.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship between serum uric acid (UA) level and abdominal obesity or metabolic syndrome (MS).METHODS:A total of 875 subjects, with 350 males and 525 females, aged 40-65 years old, were enrolled in this study. The clinical and biochemical data were collected and MRI was used to assess the visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues. The relationships between UA level and abdominal obesity or MS were analyzed, and the cut-off values of UA for abdominal obesity and MS were determined.RESULTS:Raised risks of abdominal obesity(OR = 4.35, 95%CI 1.91-9.90 in males; OR = 5.44, 95%CI 2.41-12.31 in females) and MS(OR = 4.47, 95%CI 2.08-9.62 in males; OR = 11.62, 95%CI 3.43-39.37 in females) were observed with the increase of UA level. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that UA was an independent risk factor for hypertriglyceridemia(OR = 2.23, 95%CI 1.02-4.87 in males; OR = 3.04, 95%CI 1.49-6.23 in females) in all subjects and for abdominal obesity(OR = 3.23, 95%CI 1.32-7.91) and hypertension (OR = 2.35, 95%CI 1.37-4.05) in the females. Among the females, the regression line analyzed by simple correlation indicated that the UA level of 244.0 µmol/L was corresponded to the visceral adipose tissue area of 80 cm(2). The optimal cut-off point of UA for the diagnosis of MS was 258.8 µmol/L determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve.CONCLUSIONS:The level of UA is closely correlated with abdominal obesity and MS in the middle-aged Chinese. The elevated UA level is an independent risk factor for abdominal obesity and MS in the female.

Abstract:Objective To Objective To explore the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among individuals with different levels of uric acid.Methods Interview,physical examination and serological examination were carried out in a large-scale petrochemical enterprise.Metabolic syndrome was defined by the International Diabetes Federation(IDF2005)and Chinese Diabetes Society(CDS 2004).Results A total of 9543 subjects were surveyed,and 1289 of them had metabolic syndrome(12.3%).The prevalence rates of the metabolic syndrome were 10.0%,17.6% and 43.3% of the subjects whose uric acid levels were lower than 6 mg/dl,from 6 to 8 mg/dl,and higher than 8 mg/dl,respectively(by 2005 IDF).Conclusion Emphasis should be put on the increasing trend of metabolic syndrome along with the higher level of serum uric acid.
The bidirectional relationship between metabolic syndrome and hyperuricemia in China: A longitudinal study from CHARLS

Abstract:ObjectiveIt has been reported that metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been associated with hyperuricemia. However, current findings have been inconclusive regarding the direction of this association. The objective of this study was to clarify the possible directional relationship between hyperuricemia and MetS.DesignThis study used two waves of data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011 and 2015 (N = 6,253, aged ≥40 years). Logistic regression and cross-lagged panel design were performed to evaluate the bidirectional association between uric acid with MetS. MetS score is defined as the number of MetS components present.ResultsNew-onset hyperuricemia and MetS were observed in a four-year follow-up study among 719 and 625 participants, respectively. A positive association was observed in the adjusted logistical regression model between baseline MetS score and new-onset hyperuricemia (P for trend <0.001), and also between baseline serum uric acid (SUA) and new-onset MetS (P for trend <0.001). Cross-lagged panel analysis indicated MetS score positively and prospectively predicted SUA, but not vice versa. After stratification by sex, we observed a strong, bidirectional relationship between MetS score and SUA indicating that diagnosis in one illness increased the risk of the other, both men and women. Moreover, this study also found that systolic blood pressure (P < 0.001) and triglycerides (P < 0.001) had a bidirectional relationship with SUA.ConclusionsThe results of this study indicated a bidirectional relationship between MetS and hyperuricemia.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the correlation between hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome in medical staff and the risk factors resulted in hyperuricemia,and provide the evidences for reducing the risk suffering from hyperuricemia by improving the lifestyle.Methods A total of 2 763 medical staff who received the physical examination in the same hospital in Beijing were enrolled in this study.Based on the levels of serum uric acid of participants,the reference interval of serum uric acid in healthy subjects was set up.The risk factors resulted in hyperuricemia and the relationship between hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome were analyzed by the univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis.Results The reference intervals of serum uric acid for males and females younger than 50 years of age(including 50 years old) were 244 to 496 μmol/L and 175 to 398 μmol/L respectively,and the females older than 50 years were 183 to 415 μmol/L.The multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that overweight(OR=2.312,95% CI 1.840 to 2.905),high blood pressure(OR=1.902,95% CI 1.470 to 2.463),elevated triglycedies(OR=1.765,95% CI 1.372 to 2.272) and metabolic syndrome(OR=3.906,95% CI 3.052 to 5.001) were all the independent risk factors resulted in hyperuricemia.The serum uric acid levels rose with increased abnormal criteria for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome(P<0.05),and the risk suffering from hyperuricemia increased by 1.723 times(95% CI 1.567 to 1.896) for each additive abnormal criteria.Conclusion The reference interval of serum uric acid established in this investigation was higher than that in the previous reports.MS may be the independent risk factors resulted in hyperuricemia.
Association of Serum Uric Acid with Body Mass Index: A Cross-Sectional Study from Jiangsu Province, China.

Abstract:Background: Body mass index (BMI) has been demonstrated to be associated with serum uric acid (SUA) level in many developed countries, however, there is still a lack of large sample study in Jiangsu Province, one of the most economically developed regions in China, where fat-rich diet is common.Methods: Through retrospective analysis in healthy subjects, we determined the association of BMI with hyperuricemia risk. Data of 39,736 participants from January 2011 to June 2013 in China were analyzed for parameters including physical examinations and biochemical blood analysis.Results: On univariate analysis, SUA was positively correlated with age, SBP, DBP, BMI, FPG, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, white blood cell count, platelet, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, ALT, AST, bilirubin, albumin, BUN and creatinine. SUA was significantly elevated in a linear fashion as BMI increased, and SUA in obesity was significantly higher than underweight. The prevalence of hyperuricemia remained approximately 2.98 times greater among individuals with overweight, and 5.96 times greater among obesity, compared to individuals with underweight.Conclusion: There is a positive relationship between BMI and SUA among healthy subjects in Jiangsu province, China.
