Abstract:Wound management, especially for chronic wounds, has emerged as a major healthcare challenge, which brings great pain and other negative impacts to patients, and accounts for significant portions of health care budgets. The common practice of covering wounds with dressings, owing to the lack of information about wound healing underneath, cannot provide insights into the status of the wound. Changing the dressings to inspect wounds not only disturbs normal healing process of wounds, but also causes pain to affected individuals. Therefore, it is necessary to rely on parameters in the wound microenvironment such as temperature, pH, moisture level, and etc., by continuously monitoring, to indicate the wound status and healing stages. Moreover, intelligent on-demand treatment systems also can be integrated into the smart dressing, called new-type skin bioelectronic systems to be applicated in wound repair. Besides monitoring, these kinds of skin bioelectronic systems can offer effective treatments automatedly when the wound deteriorates. It makes timely treatment possible and avoids delayed treatment and uncovering the dressing to give medicine. In this review, wound healing-related indexes in the wound microenvironment are discussed, applications of various smart dressings with functions of monitoring or/and treatment are summarized.

Abstract:Significance: Nowadays, the wound dressing is no longer limited to its primary wound protection ability. Hydrogel, sponge-like material, three dimensional-printed mesh, and nanofiber-based dressings with incorporation of functional components, such as nanomaterials, growth factors, enzymes, antimicrobial agents, and electronics, are able to not only prevent/treat infection but also accelerate the wound healing and monitor the wound-healing status. Recent Advances: The advances in nanotechnologies and materials science have paved the way to incorporate various functional components into the dressings, which can facilitate wound healing and monitor different biological parameters in the wound area. In this review, we mainly focus on the discussion of recently developed functional wound dressings. Critical Issues: Understanding the structure and composition of wound dressings is important to correlate their functions with the outcome of wound management. Future Directions: "All-in-one" dressings that integrate multiple functions (e.g., monitoring, antimicrobial, pain relief, immune modulation, and regeneration) could be effective for wound repair and regeneration.

Abstract:As the prevalence of diabetes increases year by year and the aging population continues to intensify in the world, chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers have become serious problems that threaten people's health, and have brought an enormous burden to the world healthcare system. Conventional clinical treatment of chronic wounds relies on non-specific topical care (including debridement, infection/inflammation control, and frequent wound dressing changes), which can alleviate disease progression and reduce patient suffering to a certain extent, but the overall cure rate is less than 50% and the recurrence rate is high. Traditional wound dressings such as gauze, hydrocolloids, films and foams are single-function, acting as a physical barrier or absorbing exudates, and cannot meet all the needs of the entire chronic wound healing process. Recently, a large number of novel functional dressings have been reported for chronic wound repair. Based on the progress on wound dressings in recent years and the relevant research experience of our group, the review summarizes and discusses the progress on multifunctional wound dressings (such as microneedles, sponges and hydrogels) with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, pro-angiogenic and tissue adhesive functions in detail. At the same time, the various responsive mechanisms ( in vivo microenvironment or in vitro stimulation) of the smart multifunctional wound dressing are also analyzed in detail. It is expected that the review could provide some inspiration and suggestions for research on dressings for chronic wound treatment.

Abstract:Skin is the body's first defense against external injuries, in daily production life, skin as an organ is easily injured, forming surface trauma. Wound dressings play a pivotal role in the process of skin wound repair. In order to meet the clinical demand for wound dressings, functional wound dressings with excellent biocompatibility, excellent antimicrobial activity, absorption of wound exudate and promotion of wound tissue repair have been developed. We categorize wound dressings into traditional medical dressings and novel medical wound dressings, and review the wound dressings included in the latter in terms of types, preparation methods, and effects. In future treatments for chronic wounds, researchers will integrate and utilize the antimicrobial activity, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties of wound dressings to investigate advanced wound dressings with multiple functions.

Abstract:Wound management is a big challenge worldwide, laying a huge financial burden on the government of every nation. Wound dressings that can facilitate wound healing have been under investigation for a long time. Conventional wound dressings, such as bandages, hydrogels and foams, help the wound healing not as efficiently as they were expected since they can't respond to the wound healing process well. Smart wound dressings that can interact with the wounds, sense and react to the wound condition or environment changing by employing built-in sensors and/or smart materials such as stimuli-responsive materials and self-healing materials, have been proposed to effectively facilitate wound healing. During the past decade, smart wound dressings have sprouted, and various smart wound dressings including biomechanical wound dressing, stimuli-responsive wound dressing, self-healing wound dressing for motional wounds, self-removable wound dressing and monitoring wound dressing have emerged. However, a review on these smart wound dressings is lacking. Thus, in this review, a summary of smart wound dressings will be given, as well as the status, advances, challenges and future trends of this area, aiming to give researchers a clear understanding of the past, present and future of this emerging area.

Abstract:Wound healing is vital to maintain the physiological functions of the skin. The most common treatment is the use of a dressing to cover the wound and reduce infection risk and the rate of secondary injuries. Modern wound dressings have been the top priority choice for healing various types of wounds owing to their outstanding biocompatibility and biodegradability. In addition, they also maintain temperature and a moist environment, aid in pain relief, and improve hypoxic environments to stimulate wound healing. Due to the different types of wounds, as well as the variety of advanced wound dressing products, this review will provide information on the clinical characteristics of the wound, the properties of common modern dressings, and the in vitro , in vivo as well as the clinical trials on their effectiveness. The most popular types commonly used in producing modern dressings are hydrogels, hydrocolloids, alginates, foams, and films. In addition, the review also presents the polymer materials for dressing applications as well as the trend of developing these current modern dressings to maximize their function and create ideal dressings. The last is the discussion about dressing selection in wound treatment and an estimate of the current development tendency of new materials for wound healing dressings.

However, conventional passive wound dressings often fail to meet the requirements for effective wound management. As a result, there is a growing emergence of intelligent wound dressings that aim to address this issue. These smart wound dressings incorporate one or more electrochemical or optical sensors, enabling real-time monitoring of wound conditions. Furthermore, they also integrate various stimulation techniques, including photostimulation, electrostimulation, and pharmacological stimulation, in order to facilitate accelerated wound healing. This integration of sensing and stimulation capabilities holds immense potential for personalized wound care. This paper offers a comprehensive review of recent advancements in the field of wearable, novel dressings designed for the purpose of chronic wound monitoring and management. It examines various design concepts and applications that have been developed. Additionally, the paper discusses the future prospects and challenges associated with wearable bioelectronics in wound care, as well as their potential for clinical utilization. Abstract:The global increase of cutaneous wounds imposes huge health and financial burdens on patients and society. Despite improved wound healing outcomes, conventional wound dressings are far from ideal, owing to the complex healing process. Smart wound dressings, which are sensitive to or interact with changes in wound condition or environment, have been proposed as appealing therapeutic platforms to effectively facilitate wound healing. In this review, the wound healing processes and features of existing biomaterials are firstly introduced, followed by summarizing the mechanisms of smart responsive materials. Afterwards, recent advances and designs in smart and versatile materials of extensive applications for cutaneous wound healing were submarined. Finally, clinical progresses, challenges and future perspectives of the smart wound dressing are discussed. Overall, by mapping the composition and intrinsic structure of smart responsive materials to their individual needs of cutaneous wounds, with particular attention to the responsive mechanisms, this review is promising to advance further progress in designing smart responsive materials for wounds and drive clinical translation.

Abstract:The skin plays a fundamental role in regulating the body's internal balance and protecting against external traumas. A broad variety of environmental risk factors frequently result in acute skin wounds, whose inappropriate treatments would lead to chronic skin wounds that are difficult to heal. Traditional dressings have been widely used to repair chronic skin wounds, however their drawbacks such as insufficient hemostatic efficacy and non-moist environment have severely limited their clinical applications. As the principal component of skin, collagen has always been a research hotspot in the field of chronic skin wounds due to its advantages of low antigenicity, high biocompatibility and superior bioactivity. Collagen-based dressings have been increasingly developed to heal the chronic wounds during the past decades, arising from their capability in decreasing protein and electrolyte losses in wound exudate, preventing bacterial contamination, permitting less painful dressing changes, and improving the healing quality. This review overviews recent progress of collagen dressings for chronic skin wound healing. Various commonly used wound dressings for wound management have been first introduced. Collagen wound dressings have been categorized as films, sponges, hydrogels, nanofibers, and powders, and their efficacy has been compared. The critical functions of collagen dressings in wound healing, such as stopping bleeding, shortening inflammation, promoting angiogenesis, and stimulating tissue regeneration have been elaborated. The clinical applications of collagen dressings to repair different types of chronic wounds have been thoroughly summarized. A comprehensive list of commercialized collagen dressings has been updated, and an outlook of collagen dressings have been finally speculated.

Abstract:Bacterial infection and the ever-increasing bacterial resistance have imposed severe threat to human health. And bacterial contamination could significantly menace the wound healing process. Considering the sophisticated wound healing process, novel strategies for skin tissue engineering are focused on the integration of bioactive ingredients, antibacterial agents included, into biomaterials with different morphologies to improve cell behaviors and promote wound healing. However, a comprehensive review on anti-bacterial wound dressing to enhance wound healing has not been reported. In this review, various antibacterial biomaterials as wound dressings will be discussed. Different kinds of antibacterial agents, including antibiotics, nanoparticles (metal and metallic oxides, light-induced antibacterial agents), cationic organic agents, and others, and their recent advances are summarized. Biomaterial selection and fabrication of biomaterials with different structures and forms, including films, hydrogel, electrospun nanofibers, sponge, foam and three-dimension (3D) printed scaffold for skin regeneration, are elaborated discussed. Current challenges and the future perspectives are presented in this multidisciplinary field. We envision that this review will provide a general insight to the elegant design and further refinement of wound dressing.

Abstract:Traditional wound dressings, despite their widespread use, face limitations, such as poor infection control and insufficient healing promotion. To address these challenges, bioactive materials have emerged as a promising solution in wound care. This comprehensive review explores the latest developments in wound healing technologies, starting with an overview of the importance of effective wound management, emphasising the need for advanced bioactive wound dressings. The review further explores various bioactive materials, defining their characteristics. It covers a wide range of natural and synthetic biopolymers used to develop bioactive wound dressings. Next, the paper discusses the incorporation of bioactive agents into wound dressings, including antimicrobial and anti‐inflammatory agents, alongside regenerative components like growth factors, platelet‐rich plasma, platelet‐rich fibrin and stem cells. The review also covers fabrication techniques for bioactive wound dressings, highlighting techniques like electrospinning, which facilitated the production of nanofibre‐based dressings with controlled porosity, the sol–gel method for developing bioactive glass‐based dressings, and 3D bioprinting for customised, patient‐specific dressings. The review concludes by addressing the challenges and future perspectives in bioactive wound dressing development. It includes regulatory considerations, clinical efficacy, patient care protocol integration and wound healing progress monitoring. Furthermore, the review considers emerging trends such as smart materials, sensors and personalised medicine approaches, offering insights into the future direction of bioactive wound dressing research.

Abstract:<p>The universal increase in the number of patients with nonhealing skin wounds imposes a huge social and economic burden on the patients and healthcare systems. Although, the application of traditional wound dressings contributes to an effective wound healing outcome, yet, the complexity of the healing process remains a major health challenge. Recent advances in materials and fabrication technologies have led to the fabrication of dressings that provide proper conditions for effective wound healing. The 3D-printed wound dressings, biomolecule-loaded dressings, as well as smart and flexible bandages are among the recent alternatives that have been developed to accelerate wound healing. Additionally, the new generation of wound dressings contains a variety of microelectronic sensors for real-time monitoring of the wound environment and is able to apply required actions to support the healing progress. Moreover, advances in manufacturing flexible microelectronic sensors enable the development of the next generation of wound dressing substrates, known as electronic skin, for real-time monitoring of the whole physiochemical markers in the wound environment in a single platform. The current study reviews the importance of smart wound dressings as an emerging strategy for wound care management and highlights different types of smart dressings for promoting the wound healing process.</p>

Abstract:Timely and accurate assessment of wounds during the wound healing process is key for correct diagnosis and treatment decisions for wound repair. However, traditional wound management strategies often fail to provide timely and accurate information on wound status, thereby delaying or misleading treatments. Smart wound dressings that enable the in situ real-time monitoring of wound-related biomarkers, early diagnosis and on-demand treatment of adverse wound healing events, such as bacterial infection and inflammation, by integrating wearable sensors, advanced drug delivery systems and wireless communication technology have recently been developed and could improve wound management. In this review, we provided an overview of biomarkers, including temperature, pH, uric acid, glucose, reactive oxygen (ROS), oxygen and enzymes, related to adverse wound healing events and exiting sensors for detecting these biomarkers based on colorimetric, fluorimetric and electrochemical approaches. Examples of smart wound dressings that integrate controllable drug delivery functions triggered by both endogenous and exogenous stimuli, the all-in-one wound dressing systems capable of real-time monitoring and on-demand treatment, and the major challenges and exciting opportunities of such smart wound dressings in wound management are presented and comprehensively discussed.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Wound healing is a complicated and continuous process affected by several factors, which needs an appropriate surrounding to achieve accelerated healing. Wound healing process recruits three different phases: inflammation, proliferation, and maturation. Due to the different types of wounds, as well as the advancement in medical technology, various products have been developed to repair different skin lesions. Our objective is to investigate the advancement in wound dressings from traditional to the current methods of treatment. The article presents the characteristics of an ideal wound dressing, the requirements for the appropriate selection of different types of wounds, and a detailed classification of wound dressings. Animal origin, herbal origin, and synthetic dressings are firstly introduced and reviewed. Then, nonmedicated dressings including alginate, hydrogel, and hydrocolloid dressings, as well as medicated dressings are discussed. Abstract:Human understanding of skin is constantly ongoing. Great progress has been made in skin repair, wound dressing regeneration biomaterials research in recent years. This review introduced the clinical research and guiding principles of skin repair, wound dressing biomaterials at home and abroad, introduced the classification of various skin repair and wound dressing, listed the composition and performance of different dressing biomaterials, including traditional, natural, synthetic, tissue-engineered dressing materials were extensively reviewed. The biological molecular structures and biological function characteristics of different dressing biomaterials are comprehensively reviewed. Collagen, chitosan, alginate hydrogels et al. as the most popular biological macromolecules in skin repair and wound dressing applications were reviewed. The future development direction is also prospected. This paper reviews the research progress of advanced functional skin repair and wound dressing, which provides a reference for the modifications and applications of wound dressings.

Divided nevus of the eyelids: three case studies.

Abstract:Divided nevus or kissing nevus is a rare form of congenital nevus that usually occurs on adjacent parts of the upper and lower eyelids of one eye. Most often, the formation is present from birth, but it may also appear later. Three new cases during the period 1996 to 2004 are reported. Two of them were treated in our unit for oncological, functional and aesthetic purposes, and one preferred not to be operated on. All our patients had divided nevus of the left eyelid. In the first case, the reconstruction was achieved with two tarso-conjunctival flaps covered with skin grafts. In the second case, we used a technique based on autologous cultivated conjunctival epithelium. The third patient preferred not to be operated on and is still under clinical follow-up. Because of the severe disfigurement, risk of later malignant change in the lesion, and the possibility of deprivation amblyopia, early surgical treatment is very important.

Abstract:Wound dressings (WDs) are an essential component of wound management and serve as an artificial barrier to isolate the injured site from the external environment, thereby helping to prevent exogenous infections and supporting healing. However, maintaining a moist wound environment, providing protection from infection, good biocompatibility, and allowing for gas exchange, remain a challenge in device design. Functional wound dressings (FWDs) prepared from hybrid biological macromolecule-based materials can enhance efficacy of these systems for skin wound management. This review aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art FWDs within the field of wound management, with a specific focus on hybrid biomaterials, techniques, and applications developed over the past five years. In addition, we highlight the incorporation of biological macromolecules in WDs, the emergence of smart WDs, and discuss the existing challenges and future prospects for the development of advanced WDs.

Abstract:One of the most advanced, promising, and commercially viable research issues in the world of hydrogel dressing is gaining functionality to achieve improved therapeutic impact or even intelligent wound repair. In addition to the merits of ordinary hydrogel dressings, functional hydrogel dressings can adjust their chemical/physical properties to satisfy different wound types, carry out the corresponding reactions to actively create a healing environment conducive to wound repair, and can also control drug release to provide a long-lasting benefit. Although a lot of in-depth research has been conducted over the last few decades, very few studies have been properly summarized. In order to give researchers a basic blueprint for designing functional hydrogel dressings and to motivate them to develop ever-more intelligent wound dressings, we summarized the development of functional hydrogel dressings in recent years, as well as the current situation and future trends, in light of their preparation mechanisms and functional effects.
