Abstract:Hydrogen is one of the clean energy sources that can be used instead of fossil fuel sources to reduce greenhouse emissions. However, hydrogen supply intermittency significantly reduces the deployment and reliability of this energy resource. Therefore, this work investigates the underground storage of hydrogen in depleted gas reservoirs to avoid seasonal fluctuations in hydrogen supply and assure long-term energy security. The obtained results from molecular simulation (Density Functional Theory) revealed hydrogen is adsorbed physically on calcite (104) and silica (001) surfaces on different adsorption configurations. This conclusion is supported by low adsorption energies (−0.14 eV for calcite and −0.09 for silica) and by Bader charge analysis, which showed no indication of charge transfer. The experimental results illustrated that hydrogen has a very low adsorption affinity toward carbonate and sandstone rocks in the temperature range of 50–100 °C and pressure up to 20 bar. These results show the potential of depleted gas reservoirs to store hydrogen for s is useful in hydrogen recovery as no hydrogen will be adsorbed to the rock surface of conventional gas reservoirs.

Abstract:Despite the growing interest in hydrogen as a potential source for supplying the increasing global demand for energy, the design, construction, and maintenance of hydrogen storage and transport infrastructure poses major challenges. Unlike natural gas, compressing hydrogen in storage units requires relatively high pressure which could be unfeasible and, hence, large storage compartments are needed to ensure a continuous supply. Depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs present naturally occurring storage compartments that come with existing infrastructure to allow for injection, production, and monitoring of hydrogen. In this study, depleted organic-rich shale formations were investigated for their suitability for the geo-storage of hydrogen. The approach adopted followed a realistic scenario of hydrogen injection in the presence of residual amounts of natural gas (represented by methane) to capture hydrogen/natural gas interactions with the surrounding rock formations at some degree of confinement as well as the effect of that on the storage mechanisms. The investigation was carried out at the molecular scale using molecular simulation considering some of the organic and inorganic constituents of shales. The results showed that, despite the degree of confinement, hydrogen was taken up mainly by different nanopores as free compressed phase, while methane was predominantly adsorbed. These results were used to derive a reservoir-scale volumetric model to determine the total hydrogen storage capacity in depleted shale formations. The findings reported in this study provides some critical insights for the assessment of subsurface reservoirs for geo-storage projects.

Abstract:Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) is recognized as one of the most promising ways to achieve large-scale long-term storage of hydrogen, and bridge the gap between demand and supply of the renewable energy sources. Recent studies show that depleted shale gas reservoirs might also be a favorable candidate for hydrogen storage because of its unique adsorption and sealing capacities. However, the interaction of hydrogen-cushion gas-water in shale is still unclear, and there is a lack of research revealing the transport mechanisms of their mixtures in shale nanopores. Here, we used the molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the hydrogen-methane transport through Na-montmorillonite clay (i.e. a common clay mineral in shale) in the presence of water. The effect of pore size, water content and driving pressure gradient on fluid behavior was discussed. The results show that: (i) The pores prefer to adsorb water molecules and form water films near the pore walls. If the water content is below 10%, it can be considered to increase the proportion of cushion gas to reduce the adsorption loss of hydrogen. (ii) When the water content increases from 10% to 50%, the thickness of water film in the pores increases by 2–3 times, and the self-diffusion coefficient of hydrogen decreases more than that of methane. (iii) The increased pressure gradient promotes the desorption of water molecules, and results in an increased amount of hydrogen accumulating near the pore walls. The results in the study provide deep insights into how hydrogen-methane mixtures transport through clay nanopores, which is important for enhancing experimental and modelling design aimed at improving hydrogen injection and production efficiency in shale.

Abstract:A suitable option for Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) is aquifers composed of porous and permeable media. However, the successful execution and long-term safety of the UHS process require further understanding of hydrogen transport behavior in the pathway of caprock to eliminate the possibility of hydrogen leakage. In this regard, we employ Molecular Dynamics simulation to predict the hydrogen diffusion coefficient in five different water-saturated clay minerals, major components of caprock, and to assess the effects of clay mineral characteristics in terms of pore size (1–8 nm), layer charge distribution (octahedral sheet and tetrahedral sheets), and counterion type (Na + and Ca 2+ ) on hydrogen diffusion. The results show that the diffusion of hydrogen in negatively charged water-saturated clay minerals significantly increases for pore size increments of less than 2 nm (critical pore size) based on layer charge distribution and interlayer cations. However, no considerable changes in the hydrogen diffusion coefficients are observed for pore sizes larger than 2 nm. While the hydrogen diffusion coefficient in pyrophyllite (no charge, no interlayer cation) experiences a monotonous rise as pore size increases. Our findings in this study assist in better experimental test design to examine the possibility of leakage in actual field implementation by focusing on the clay mineral characteristics.

Abstract:Summary As a clean energy carrier, hydrogen (H2) is considered an indispensable part of the energy transition roadmap. To meet increasing energy demand, extremely large storage capacities are required. Previous studies have focused on underground H2 storage in conventional depleted gas reservoirs, salt caverns, and saline aquifers. The increasing number of depleted shale gas reservoirs may be good candidates for H2 storage. In this work, we analyze the potential of H2 storage in depleted gas reservoirs using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The competitive adsorption of a methane-hydrogen (C1-H2) system under nanoscale conditions is investigated, including the effects of pore size, temperature, pressure, boundary material, and fluid composition. Our results show that C1 is preferentially adsorbed in a C1-H2 system. C1 forms the adsorption layer near the boundary surface, while H2 molecules are freely distributed in the pore. The fluid distribution indicates that H2 can be easily produced during H2 recovery processes, which contributes to H2 storage in depleted shale gas reservoirs. In addition, the effect of water on C1-H2 competitive adsorption is analyzed. The strong interactions between water and boundary atoms force C1 molecules away from the adsorbed region. This work provides a foundation for hydrogen storage in depleted shale gas reservoirs at a molecular level.

Abstract:Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in reservoirs offers the opportunity for large-scale and long-term storage of hydrogen. In order to understand the fundamental mechanisms of hydrogen storage and transportation, it is crucial to study the adsorption and diffusion behavior of hydrogen in reservoirs. By utilizing a hybrid GCMC and MD simulation procedure, we investigated the adsorption and diffusion behavior of hydrogen in kaolinite slit with pore sizes ranging from 1 to 20 nm at pressures up to 30 MPa and temperatures ranging from 303 to 423 K. Hydrogen distribution, excess adsorption, diffusion coefficient, and gas–solid interaction energy were analyzed in relation to pore size, temperature, pressure, and mineralogy. When pores are larger than 5 nm, most of the hydrogen is located in the bulk phase, resulting in insignificant hydrogen loss due to adsorption. Therefore, reservoirs with pores larger than 5 nm are suitable for UHS. Reservoirs with low temperatures and high hydrogen pressures are conducive to UHS, but the hydrogen mobility is reduced. The mineralogy of the formation results in pore surfaces with different charge properties, which significantly affects hydrogen storage. Although van der Waals interaction dominates the gas–solid interaction, Coulomb interaction remains important. The negatively charged pore surface mitigates the gas–solid Coulomb interaction, thereby preventing hydrogen loss through adsorption. This study enhances our understanding of hydrogen storage mechanisms in subsurface porous media and elucidates the influence of various factors. Consequently, it provides a theoretical framework for selecting UHS sites.

Abstract:Emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from fossil fuel usage continue to be an incredibly challenging problem to the attainment of CO 2 free global economy; carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and the substitution of fossil fuel with clean hydrogen have been identified as significant primary techniques of achieving net zero carbon emissions. However, predicting the number of gases trapped in the geological storage media effectively and safely is essential in attaining decarbonization objectives and the hydrogen economy. Successful underground storage of carbon dioxide and hydrogen depends on the wettability of the storage/cap rocks as well as the interfacial interaction between subsurface rocks, the injected gas, and the formation of brine. A key challenge in determining these factors through experimental studies is the presence of conflicting contact angle data and the difficulty of accurately replicating subsurface conditions in the laboratory. To address this issue, molecular dynamics simulations offer a microscopic approach to recreating subsurface conditions and resolving experimentally inconsistent results. Herein, we report the molecular dynamics simulation results for hydrogen (H 2 ) and cushion gas (e.g., CO 2 and N 2 ) on quartz surfaces to understand the capillary and trapping of these gases in sandstone formations. The results of these three gasses were compared to one another. The simulation predictions showed that the intermolecular interactions at the CO 2 -quartz surface area are more substantial than at the N 2 and H 2 -quartz interface, suggesting that the quartz surface is more CO 2 -wet than N 2 and H 2 -wet under the same circumstances. In addition, it was found that CO 2 has a substantially higher adsorption rate (∼ 65 Kcal/mol) than N 2 (∼ 5 Kcal/mol) and H 2 (∼ 0.5 Kcal/mol). This phenomenon can be explained by the fact that CO 2 density is substantially larger than N 2 /H 2 density at the same geo-storage conditions. As a result, CO 2 could be the most favorable cushion gas during underground hydrogen storage (UHS) because a higher CO 2 residual is expected compared to H 2 . However, due to the Van der Waal Interaction force with quartz, only a small amount of H 2 can be withdrawn.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) is an attractive energy carrier to move, store, and deliver energy in a form that can be easily used. Field proven technology for underground hydrogen storage (UHS) is essential for a successful hydrogen economy. Options for this are manmade caverns, salt domes/caverns, saline aquifers, and depleted oil/gas fields, where large quantities of gaseous hydrogen have been stored in caverns for many years. The key requirements intrinsic of a porous rock formation for seasonal storage of hydrogen are: adequate capacity, ability to contain H2, capability to inject/extract high volumes of H2, and a reliable caprock to prevent leakage. We have carefully evaluated a commercial non-isothermal compositional gas reservoir simulator and its suitability for hydrogen storage and withdrawal from saline aquifers and depleted oil/gas reservoirs. We have successfully calibrated the gas equation of state model against published laboratory H2 density and viscosity data as a function of pressure and temperature. Comparisons between the H2, natural gas and CO2 storage in real field models were also performed. Our numerical models demonstrated more lateral spread of the H2 when compared to CO2 and natural gas with a need for special containment in H2 projects. It was also observed that the experience with CO2 and natural gas storage cannot be simply replicated with H2.

Toward a Fundamental Understanding of Geological Hydrogen Storage

Abstract:Geological H2 storage plays a central role to enable the successful transition to the renewable H2 economy and achieve net-zero emission in the atmosphere. Depleted oil and gas reservoirs are already explored with extensive reservoir and operational data. However, residual hydrocarbons can mix with injected H2 in the reservoirs. Furthermore, low density and high diffusivity of H2 may establish H2 leakage from the reservoirs via fault pathways. Interestingly, H2 can be consumed by microorganisms, which results in pore-network precipitation, plugging, and partial permeability impairment. Therefore, stored H2 may be lost in the formations if the storage scenario is not planned cautiously. While salt caverns are safe and commercially proven geo-rock for H2 storage, they have low-storage capacity compared to depleted gas reservoirs. Moreover, salt structures (e.g., domel, bedded) and microorganisms activities in the salt cavern are limiting factors, which can influence the storage process. Accordingly, we discuss challenges and future perspectives of hydrogen storage in different geological settings. We also highlight geographical limitations with diverse microbial communities and theoretical understanding of abiotic transformation (in terms of rock’s minerals, i.e., mica and calcite) for geological H2 storage. Regarding the fundamental behavior of H2 in the geological settings, it is less soluble in formation water; therefore, it may achieve less solubility trapping compared to CO2 and CH4. Furthermore, H2 gas could attain higher capillary entrance pressures in porous media over CH4 and CO2 due to higher interfacial tension. Additionally, the low viscosity of H2 may facilitate its injection and production but H2 may establish the secondary trapping and viscous fingering. Thus, this review documents a blend of key information for the amendment of subsurface H2 storage at the industrial scale.

Abstract:Summary Utilizing underground geological structures for hydrogen storage is an effective approach for energy transformation. The depleted shale reservoirs can be considered as promising options for large-scale hydrogen storage because of the vast storage capacity, high containment security, and low operation cost. However, it is challenging to characterize the hydrogen transportation mechanism and estimate hydrogen storage potential in shale formations from multiscale perspectives. In this paper, we propose a multiscale model for hydrogen transport and storage in partially depleted hydraulically fractured shale reservoirs, considering the effects of gas diffusion, adsorption, slip flow, and continuous flow. By the Laplace transformation and Pedrosa substitution, a computationally effective semi-analytical solution was derived and validated with a commercial numerical simulator. A hydrogen storage capacity (HSC) assessment workflow is proposed using a typical shale reservoir in the Appalachian Basin as a case study. The results indicate that the storage capacity can reach up to 31.92×108 m3 at a high constrained injection pressure. In addition, the HSC is strongly controlled by the adsorption property, diffusion coefficient, shale composition, flow capacity between different scale media, and mobility ratio. The influence of most reservoir parameters on storage potential is negligible at low constrained pressure but critical at high constrained pressure. Such a model can be used as a robust pressure predictor and storage capacity estimator for hydrogen storage projects in partially depleted shale reservoirs.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a clean energy form aiding in achieving the significant net zero targets while fulfilling objectives of reducing carbon emissions by major economies, thus transitioning from fossil fuel to sustainable energy centres. To mitigate the high demand for electricity and heat in the peak winter season in Europe, it is proposed to store the excess electricity-converted-hydrogen in saline aquifers, salt caverns, and depleted oil and gas reservoirs. These geoformations can store GigaWatt scale hydrogen energy, significantly larger than the other storage means. In this work, we investigate the impact of aquifer-related mechanisms and parameters on the performance of underground hydrogen storage in a North Sea aquifer utilizing the numerical simulation approach. The effect of heterogeneity in permeability, relative permeability hysteresis, fluid-fluid solubility of hydrogen in formation brine and the diffusion over the predictive simulation periods were investigated in this study. Hydrogen gas injectivity and recovery efficiency were observed to be significantly influenced by the aquifer’s permeability heterogeneity. Moreover, the relative permeability hysteresis further decreased the hydrogen gas injectivity and recovery, which occurs due to the trapping of the residual hydrogen gas in the trailing edge of the migrating hydrogen plume inside the aquifer. This is more clearly visible during the hydrogen production cycles. The inclusion of hydrogen solubility and hydrogen diffusion indicated negligible effects when evaluated independently. However, their combined evaluation with the above factors, has shown an impact on the performance of underground hydrogen storage in term of lower recovery efficiency. Investigation of the addition of CO2 as a cushion gas is projected to yield hydrogen gas recovery while sequestering and storing the large volumes of CO2 achieving the noticeable decarbonisation targets.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a clean fuel that is becoming increasingly popular in addressing future energy challenges, however, its viable storage requires an understanding of its interaction with underground rock minerals. For this purpose, this study focuses on developing adsorption isotherms and Henry coefficients for hydrogen in hydroxylated quartz surfaces, which are predominant in sandstone and shale rocks. In this study, a molecular-scale hydroxylated quartz structure with a pore space is generated and the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is utilized to assess the adsorption isotherms and Henry coefficients. Initially, the CO2 adsorption with the hydroxylated quartz is matched with the published data to determine the accuracy of MC simulation and the mineral-fluid interaction. After that, the concentration of H2 within the pore is progressively increased and the competitive adsorption is calculated under various subsurface temperature and pressure conditions. Additionally, CH4 is introduced to understand the competitive adsorption dynamics between H2 and CH4. The findings indicate that increasing pressure results in increasing molecules of hydrogen that monotonically increase H2 adsorption. On the contrary, increasing temperature reduces the affinity of hydrogen with the quartz surface causing a decrease in adsorption capacity and Henry coefficients. Furthermore, a weak single hydrogen adsorption layer is developed at all pressure and temperature conditions, while most of the hydrogen remains as a free gas in the pore. In addition, the hydroxyl group controls most of the adsorption of hydrogen in the hydroxylated quartz. Furthermore, the addition of water film (approximately 1 wt%) reduces the hydrogen adsorption by around 3 %. The H2 adsorption values further experience a notable decrease with the introduction of CO2 and CH4, primarily due to the establishment of a strong adsorption layer caused by the high electrostatic attraction between these gases and the quartz mineral. The study offers crucial microscopic details regarding H2 adsorption alongside CO2 and CH4 gases within hydroxylated quartz pores. These insights support efficient hydrogen geo-storage and larger-scale simulation research.

Abstract:Abstract The is wide consensus that combustion of fossil fuels and rising greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere are accelerating global warming. To avoid the dilemma of need for fossil fuels to provide energy supply and the need to reduce fossil fuel related emissions, it is critical to promote renewable energy as a viable option to satisfy the world's energy requirements. However, employing renewables to generate power necessitates the use of bulk storage to accommodate discrepancies related to where and when renewable energy is produced versus where and when it is needed. Underground hydrogen storage has the potential to support establishment of hydrogen as a reliable source of clean energy across the planet. Where present, depleted oil and gas reservoirs, due to their existing infrastructure, can prove to be an attractive asset for underground hydrogen storage. One of the main challenges involved in the storage of hydrogen in the depleted oil and gas reservoirs is related to wellbore integrity. When hydrogen is injected or produced in the subsurface, it may get bin contact with cement around the wellbores. Hence it is necessary to investigate the effects of hydrogen interacting with the cement sheath. To study this in the laboratory, a core holder capable of simulating the wellbore conditions is used to conduct the tests. A 2" long, 1.5" diameter cement sample was placed inside the core holder and hydrogen was injected into it. Hydrogen was also injected into wet cement slurry to investigate possible stability of the cement samples. The effects of injecting hydrogen on set cement are studied using a CT Scanner which demonstrates if there is any formation of cracks and micro-annuli in the cement. The cement sample is crushed afterwards, and the presence of hydrogen particles in the structure of cement is evaluated by X -Ray Diffraction. A neat 15.5 lbs./gal Class "H" cement which is common in the industry is used in this study. Well integrity is a key success factor to establish the viability of underground hydrogen storage in the subsurface. For that we analyzed if the cement is good enough for hydrogen to be stored in depleted oil and gas reservoirs. We further studied the integrity of newly drilled wells when exposed to hydrogen.
Cushion gas effects on clay-hydrogen-brine wettability at conditions relevant to underground gas storage

Abstract:Geological storage of hydrogen, and its retrieval as needed, could play a vital role in the transition from fossil-fuel based energy to clean renewable energy production. Cushion gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, can be used to maintain the reservoir pressure required to increase the efficiency of injection and extraction processes. Because water is ubiquitous in the subsurface, it can provide additional sealing mechanisms and affect the ability of gases to penetrate porous rocks. Because the interactions among the various gases and the wetting properties in the subsurface affect the sealing capacity of the caprock, they can provide important considerations for the proper design of geological storage and retrieval processes. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to evaluate the effects of varying compositions of cushion gases (CO 2 and CH 4 ) on brine-hydrogen-kaolinite clay wettability. Contact angles and liquid–gas interfacial tension were computed for 10% NaCl brines at 323 K and pressures in the range 5–40 MPa. These conditions are representative of underground gas storage. The results showed that, in pure H 2 , the kaolinite siloxane surface is 'intermediate wet', with contact angles ranging from 91° to 106°. At constant temperature and pressure, CO 2 and CH 4 cause the surface to become less water-wet, yielding larger contact angles. We observed that CO 2 led to a more significant increase in contact angles. This suggests that CO 2 or CH 4 lead to easier recovery of hydrogen. These cushion gases also reduce gas-brine interfacial tensions, with CH 4 yielding a less pronounced effect than CO 2 . Reductions in interfacial tension translate to reduced capillary sealing pressure, which implies that hydrogen can be retrieved at lower pressures. The results presented suggest that the efficiency of a gas used as cushion gas is related to the density difference between the resultant gas mixture and water. At the conditions tested here, CO 2 and CH 4 are found to reduce the sealing capacity of kaolinite towards hydrogen storage, while they are likely to improve hydrogen recovery. This should be taken into consideration when intermittent hydrogen storage is attempted in geological repositories.

Abstract:Geological hydrogen storage could be an effective method for solving energy demand and climate change challenges. We focus on hydrogen diffusion in carbonate slits via molecular dynamics under subsurface conditions. We investigate the influence of pore size, moisture content, and salinity on hydrogen diffusion process. The results demonstrate that high moisture content reduces the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen due to the form of water bridge and hydrogen cluster. The impact of salinity is observed only under high moisture content conditions. Specially, CaCl2 and MgCl2 are more suitable than NaCl for hydrogen storage. Hydrogen storage is more suitable in lower NaCl concentration while it is more suitable in a higher Na2SO4 concentration. Because interfacial tension of hydrogen-salt solution could be affected by ion concentration. These results demonstrate that hydrogen diffusion could be regulated by changing salinity for high water cut reservoir. This job could provide valuable guidance for underground hydrogen storage.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a green energy carrier, which appears to reshape the current energy supply chain. To develop a full-scale hydrogen supply chain, underground hydrogen storage has been proposed as a key method. However, one of the key hurdles in UHS is the fluid-rock interactions or hydrogen wetting. The interfacial reactions govern hydrogen wetting in underground reservoirs and thus determine the hydrogen flow and govern the amount of hydrogen trapping in porous media. Although the hydrogen wetting has been gaining attention, how the hydrogen wetting behaves in complicated underground circumstances remains in the shadow. To understand the nano-scale character of hydrogen wetting, a series of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to analyse the hydrogen distribution on kaolinite surface in function of salinity, mineralogy, and organic materials. We computed density distribution and the radial distribution function (RDF, g(r) ) of each species. The results show that salinity can dramatically affect hydrogen distribution on the siloxane surface while negligible effects can be observed on aluminol (gibbsite) surfaces of kaolinite. Furthermore, the hydrogen distribution can be notably shaped by organic materials. Organic materials with acid functional group (–COOH) can generate a more hydrogen wetting surface than base functional group (–NH). This investigation reveals the governing mechanics of hydrogen-brine-kaolinite reactions at molecular scale, unravels the effects of hydrogen-brine-kaolinite reactions in hydrogen wetting and thus provides a paradigm to screen candidate sites for the UHS.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide and hydrogen storage in geological formations at Gt scale are two promising strategies toward net-zero carbon emissions. To date, investigations into underground hydrogen storage (UHS) remain relatively limited in comparison to the more established knowledge body of underground carbon dioxide storage (UCS). Despite their analogous physical processes can be used for accelerating the advancements in UHS technology, the existing distinctions possibly may hinder direct applicability. This review therefore contributes to advancing our fundamental understanding on the key differences between UCS and UHS through multi-scale comparisons. These comparisons encompass key factors influencing underground gas storage, including storage media, trapping mechanisms, respective fluid properties, petrophysical properties, and injection scenarios. They provide guidance for the conversion of our existing knowledge from UCS to UHS, emphasizing the necessity of incorporating these factors relevant to their trapping and loss mechanisms. The article also outlines future directions to address the crucial knowledge gaps identified, aiming to enhance the utilisation of geological formations for hydrogen and carbon dioxide storage.

Abstract:Underground hydrogen storage in depleted gas reservoirs is a promising and economical option for large-scale renewable energy storage to achieve net-zero carbon emission. While caprock plays an important role in sealing capacity, current knowledge is still limited on the effect of H2-brine-rock geochemical interactions on caprock integrity, raising concerns about the viability of long-term UHS. To address this problem, we developed kinetic batch models to characterize the time-dependent redox-reactions which are unique for underground hydrogen storage. This is combined with analytical estimates for the extent of hydrogen penetration into caprock. Our results show that the dissolution degrees of all tested minerals in three types of shales are <1 % in 30 years, indicating a strong caprock integrity and containment ability during underground hydrogen storage from a geochemical perspective. Reactive transport calculations indicate that hydrogen only affects a few metres of the caprock above the reservoir, so that storage integrity of thick caprocks will be unaffected. Similarly, the overall amount of hydrogen penetrating into caprock is likely to be a tiny fraction of the amount stored, typically much <1 %. Overall, our results suggest that H2-brine-shale geochemical interactions may not compromise caprock integrity during underground hydrogen storage.

Abstract:The paper adopts an interdisciplinary approach to comprehensively review the current knowledge in the field of porous geological materials for hydrogen adsorption. It focuses on detailed analyses of the adsorption characteristics of hydrogen in clay minerals, shale, and coal, considering the effect of factors such as pore structure and competitive adsorption with multiple gases. The fundamental principles underlying physically controlled hydrogen storage mechanisms in these porous matrices are explored. The findings show that the adsorption of hydrogen in clay minerals, shale, and coal is predominantly governed by physical adsorption that follows the Langmuir adsorption equation. The adsorption capacity decreases with increasing temperature and increases with increasing pressure. The presence of carbon dioxide and methane affects the adsorption of hydrogen. Pore characteristics—including specific surface area, micropore volume, and pore size—in clay minerals, shale, and coal are crucial factors that influence the adsorption capacity of hydrogen. Micropores play a significant role, allowing hydrogen molecules to interact with multiple pore walls, leading to increased adsorption enthalpy. This comprehensive review provides insights into the hydrogen storage potential of porous geological materials, laying the groundwork for further research and the development of efficient and sustainable hydrogen storage solutions.

Abstract:The geological storage of hydrogen is necessary to enable the successful transition to a hydrogen economy and achieve net-zero emissions targets. Comprehensive investigations must be undertaken for each storage site to ensure their long-term suitability and functionality. As such, the systematic infrastructure and potential risks of large-scale hydrogen storage must be established. Herein, we conducted over 250 batch reaction experiments with different types of reservoir sandstones under conditions representative of the subsurface, reflecting expected time scales for geological hydrogen storage, to investigate potential reactions involving hydrogen. Each hydrogen experiment was paired with a hydrogen-free control under otherwise identical conditions to ensure that any observed reactions were due to the presence of hydrogen. The results conclusively reveal that there is no risk of hydrogen loss or reservoir integrity degradation due to abiotic geochemical reactions in sandstone reservoirs.
