Abstract:This article was migrated. The article was marked as recommended. The undergraduate medical curriculum, together with many of the other healthcare curricula, is under a constant state of change. Sometimes that change is for the better, very occasionally less so. Many physicians who graduated more than forty years ago may agree that the humanities were a strong component of the hidden curriculum; the humanities were just there and enhanced many teaching activities (mainly lectures) to a variable state. They were used by a certain proportion of faculty to make their lectures "more exciting", "more real" and "to put them in context". Over time and as new teaching and learning technologies took the place of formal teaching (such as lectures), these humanities approaches and enhancements appeared to become less prominent.This new AMEE MedEdPublish theme - The Importance of the Humanities in Medical Education - has not only demonstrated that the humanities are not gone and lost forever, they were just hidden, but the number of papers received demonstrated that the subject is certainly healthier than expected and suggests the inclusion of the Humanities within all forms of healthcare curricula and training opportunities. This concluding commentary provides an overview of the large number of papers received, explores the various reasons that support the presence of the humanities in the curriculum, provides insight into the ways that the humanities are being taught and finally, provides some direction of the way forward.

Abstract:The humanities are academic disciplines that study aspects of human society, experience and culture. Typically, the humanities, including philosophy, literature, art, music, history and language have been used to interpret and record our understanding of the world. In recent decades, the humanities have seen somewhat of a renaissance within medicine, particularly within undergraduate medical education. This leading article explores the value of utilising medical humanities, such as art, poetry and theatre, within postgraduate primary care training. Using examples of approaches already interwoven into the fabric of undergraduate medical education, such as simulated patient consultations and anatomical body painting, the tangible benefits of applying humanities disciplines within general practice training are discussed. The humanities have much to offer from the value of utilising an artistic lens to examine the body, the creation of socially cohesive working environments and supporting the development of empathy within trainees. This article recommends the provision of both increased informal and formal engagement with the medical humanities within postgraduate primary care training, providing practical tips for GP educators looking to integrate the humanities within pre-existing tutorials.

Abstract:Background and aim: Medical humanities is a multidisciplinary field, consisting of humanities (theory of literature and arts, philosophy, ethics, history and theology), social sciences (anthropology, psychology and sociology) and arts (literature, theater, cinema, music and visual arts), integrated in the undergraduate curriculum of Medical schools. The aim of the present study is to discuss medical humanities and support the necessity of introduction of a medical humanities course in the curriculum of Greek medical schools. Materials, methods and results: Through the relevant Pub-Med search as well as taking into account various curricula of medical schools, it is evident that medical education today is characterized by acquisition of knowledge and skills and development of medical values and attitudes. Clinical observation with the recognition of key data and patterns in the collected information, is crucial in the final medical decision, i.e. in the complex process, through which doctors accumulate data, reach conclusions and decide on therapy. All sciences included in medical humanities are important for the high quality education of future doctors. The practice of Medicine is in large an image-related science. The history of anatomy and art are closely related, already from the Renaissance time. Studies have shown that attendance of courses on art critics improves the observational skills of medical students. Literature is the source of information about the nature and source of human emotions and behavior and of narratives of illness, and increases imagination. Philosophy aids in the development of analytical and synthetical thinking. Teaching of history of medicine develops humility and aids in avoiding the repetition of mistakes of the past, and quite often raises research and therapeutic skepticism. The comprehension of medical ethics and professional deontology guides the patient-doctor relationship, as well as the relations between physicians and their colleagues. The Medical Humanities course, which is already integrated in the undergraduate curriculum of many medical schools of Europe, USA and Australia, includes lectures by experts and students presentations on the above-mentioned areas and could be offered, for a semester, during the first years. Conclusion: The aim of Medical Humanities course is the development of imagination and interpretation of data through analytical complex procedures, the development of skills of close observation and careful interpretation of the patient "language" and the enhancement of empathy for the patients, as well as the development of the physician-patient relationship and finally the conceptualization/construction of personal and professional values.

Abstract:Purpose of review The role and importance of integrating humanities into medical education has been recognized for a long time. However, to what extent humanities are included in the medical curricula and how and when they are taught during the medical training in medical schools across the world is unclear. The review was undertaken to study the current status and role of humanities in medical education Recent findings Humanities content in the medical curriculum and the teaching of humanities continue to remain unstandardized. What constitutes medical humanities is unclear as there are several understandings of medical humanities. The benefits and value – both short term and long term - of including humanities in training of doctors and other health professionals remain unresolved and continue to be debated. Although some surveys have shown that exposure to the humanities was significantly correlated with positive personal qualities, including empathy, tolerance for ambiguity, wisdom, emotional appraisal, self-efficacy, and spatial skills, and inversely correlated with some components of burnout, robust evidence from well conducted studies to support the benefits of integrating humanities into medical training is very limited. An overreaching conceptual or theoretical framework for the health humanities in health professionals’ education continue to be elusive. Summary The status, stature, profile, and role of humanities in medical education remain varied across medical schools and universities. There is a need for standardized curricula, uniform criteria and guidelines for teaching medical humanities, training modules / materials, methods of assessment and better integration of humanities in medical education.

Abstract:Use of humanities content in American medical education has been debated for well over 60 years. While many respected scholars and medical educators have purported the value of humanities content in medical training, its inclusion remains unstandardized, and the undergraduate medical curriculum continues to be focused on scientific and technical content. Cited barriers to the integration of humanities include time and space in an already overburdened curriculum, and a lack of consensus on the exact content, pedagogy and instruction. Edmund Pellegrino, physician and scholar of the latter twentieth century, spent much of his professional life promoting the value and importance of the humanities in medical education, seeking the best way to incorporate and teach this content in clinically relevant ways. His efforts included the founding of multiple enterprises starting in the 1960s and 1970s to promote human values in medical education, including the Society for Health and Human Values and its Institute on Human Values in Medicine. Regardless of his efforts and those of many others into the current century, the medical humanities remains a curricular orphan, unable to find a lasting home in medical education and training.

Abstract:Medical humanities has tended first and foremost to be associated with the ways in which the arts and humanities help us to understand health. However, this is not the only or necessarily the primary aim of our field. What the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed above all is what the field of critical medical humanities has insisted on: the deep entanglement of social, cultural, historical life with the biomedical. The pandemic has been a time for reinstating the power of expertise of a particular kind, focusing on epidemiology, scientific modelling of potential outcomes and vaccine development. All of this delivered by science at speed.It has been challenging for medical humanities researchers to find purchase in these debates with insights from our more contemplative, 'slow research' approaches. However, as the height of the crisis passes, our field might now be coming into its own. The pandemic, as well as being productive of scientific expertise, also demonstrated clearly the meaning of culture: that it is not a static entity, but is produced and evolves through interaction and relationship. Taking a longer view, we can see the emergence of a certain 'COVID-19 culture' characterised by entanglements between expert knowledge, social media, the economy, educational progress, risk to health services and people in their socio-economic, political ethnic and religious/spiritual contexts. It is the role of medical humanities to pay attention to those interactions and to examine how they play out in the human experience and potential impact of the pandemic. However, to survive and grow in significance within the field of healthcare research, we need to engage not just to comment. There is a need for medical humanities scholars to assert our expertise in interdisciplinary research, fully engaged with experts by experience, and to work proactively with funders to demonstrate our value.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for humanistic qualities in the healthcare industry, the importance of medical humanities education in cultivating high-quality medical talents is continuously growing. Medical humanities education not only involves the study of medical knowledge but more importantly, focuses on cultivating students' compassion, ethical perspectives, communication skills, and sense of social responsibility. However, there are some challenges faced by medical schools in implementing humanities education, such as insufficient educational resources, unreasonable course settings, and a lack of effective practical teaching. In view of this, this paper aims to analyze the current status of medical humanities education and propose improvement strategies based on this analysis, in order to promote the development of medical humanities education and better meet the comprehensive quality requirements of medical talents demanded by society.

Abstract:The Institute for the Medical Humanities of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) was established in June 1973 to ensure that humanities teaching and research became an integral part of the education of future scientists and health-care professionals at UTMB. The multidisciplinary faculty of the Institute-who currently represent the disciplines of art, drama, history, law, literature, philosophy, and religious studies-teach in all four years of the undergraduate medical curriculum as well as in various residency programs. In addition to its focus on students and residents in the School of Medicine, the Institute has a vibrant graduate program in medical humanities with several joint degree options, including an MD/MA and an MD/PhD program, and the Institute has always included the School of Nursing, the School of Allied Health Sciences, and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in its activities. After 30 years, the Institute's commitment to health-professional education remains strong and enduring. Challenged by major curriculum reform in the School of Medicine and increasingly tight state budgets, Institute faculty members look forward to continued collaboration with their basic science and clinical colleagues to improve our evolving curriculum and to seek research funding from external sources.

Changes in Cerebral Haemodynamics in Cases of Post-Lumbar Puncture Headache: A Prospective Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound Study

Abstract:We used transcranial Doppler ultrasonography in 45 patients to investigate if changes in haemodynamics in the major arteries of the brain base occurred after lumbar puncture and whether or not patients with or without post-lumbar puncture headache differ with respect to their cerebral haemodynamic parameters before and after lumbar puncture. Before lumbar puncture, patients with post-lumbar puncture headache differed from patients without post-lumbar puncture headache in that they showed significantly higher flow velocities and significant asymmetry of flow velocities with lateralization to the right (p £ 0.05). Patients without post-lumbar puncture headache, on the other hand, showed non-significant flow velocity lateralization to the left. Forty-eight hours after lumbar puncture, both groups demonstrated symmetrical flow velocities. In addition, only patients with post-lumbar puncture headache showed a significant reduction in the flow velocity of the right middle cerebral artery (p £ 0.05). These findings suggest that it is not only absolute flow velocity that plays a part in the event of headache, the interhemispheric relation of cerebral haemodynamics also plays a fundamental role.

Abstract:The New York University School of Medicine has a rich tradition of cultivating programs in medical humanities and professionalism. They are drawn from the departments, centers, students, and faculty in the School of Medicine, have linkages throughout the university, and are interwoven into the fabric and culture of the institution. Some are centrally based in the School of Medicine's deans' office, and others are located in individual departments and receive support from the dean's office. This article describes representative programs for medical students and faculty. Curricular initiatives, the fundamental components of medical students' learning, include a course entitled "The Physician, Patient, and Society," a clerkship essay in the Medicine Clerkship, an opportunity for reflection during the medicine clerkship, and a medical humanities elective. In 2002, the Professionalism Initiative was launched to enhance and reflect the values of the medical profession. Its curriculum consists of a series of events that coordinate, particularly, with existing elements of the first-year curriculum (e.g., orientation week, a session during anatomy, a self-assessment workshop, and a peer-assessment workshop). The Master Scholars Program is a group of five, theme-based master societies consisting of faculty and students who share common interests around the society's themes. Programs developed for the societies include colloquia, faculty-led seminars, a mandatory student-mentoring program, and visiting scholars. Finally, the authors describe three high-quality literary publications created at New York University School of Medicine. Each of the initiatives undergoes regular critical examination and reflection that drive future planning.

Abstract:Global health needs the humanities today as medicine needed the humanities in the 1970s. When new biomedical technologies threatened to undermine the physician in their primary role of healing the patient, the field of medical humanities emerged to rehumanize the doctor and revive physician empathy through humanities methods and content such as close reading of poetry and novels, reflective writing, and critiquing art. In contrast, many of today’s undergraduate global health students are plagued by a surfeit, rather than a lack, of empathy to “save the world.” As the medical humanities transformed medical education, can today’s humanities and arts, especially the new fields of health humanities and critical medical humanities, transform global health education and practice by igniting a “global health humanities”? This essay focuses on emerging pedagogical and curricular challenges in nonclinical, undergraduate global health training primarily in North America.

Abstract:With a focus on the challenges of today and tomorrow in the critical medical humanities the role of history is often overlooked. Yet history and medicine are closely intertwined. Right now, with the surfacing of knotty problems such as changing demographics, chronic pain, loneliness and Long Covid - and the consequent necessity to change directions and policies - history seems more urgent than ever. However, historians of medicine have sometimes been reticent to play a role in medicine and policymaking. The recent and welcome development of the critical medical humanities has intervened in medicine in important ways, but often without clear engagement with the history of medicine. In this letter, we make a renewed case for coherence and collaboration between history of medicine, medicine, and medical humanities, emphasising the continuity and links between all three. The skills and focus of the historian of medicine bring crucial historical context to the table, enabling better understanding of medical collecting, new imaginative futures, profound critiques of key medical concepts, and understandings of the body through time. By emphasising what historians can do for medicine and medical humanities, we call for building historical work into how medicine, illness and health are understood now and in the future. We suggest three potential roles for historians: keepers of memories, conversation partners, and futurist thinkers.

Abstract:Objectives: Medical humanities has evolved to encompass a multidisciplinary approach, integrating humanities, social sciences, and arts into medical education and practice. Despite its flourishing development, the definition of medical humanities still requires refinement to be inclusive of various cultures and regions. This study aimed to explore perceptions among students, physicians, and nurses, with a focus on the definition, learning, and implementation of medical humanities. Materials and methods: We conducted four heterogeneous focus groups, comprising 4th-year and 6th-year medical students, physicians (including three medical humanities educators), and nurses. Data collection utilized semi-structured guiding questions, followed by thematic analysis. The transcripts were manually analyzed in their original Mandarin, and participant names were anonymized to ensure that the authors remained unaware of the participants' identities throughout the study. Results: The analysis identified three themes and 16 subthemes. Theme 1, "Medical Humanities Properties," included four subthemes: variety, evolvement, clinical relevancy, and the value of humaneness. Theme 2, "Medical Humanities Contents," comprised seven subthemes: self-cultivation, communication, empathy, cultural competence, medical ethics and law, embodiment, and one subtheme open for interpretation in varying circumstances. Theme 3, "Medical Humanities Cultivation," included five subthemes: personal growth, curriculum, multimedia, clinical experience, and metacognition. Conclusion: Our study introduces a three-layered framework of medical humanities, emphasizing the field's dynamic nature and the critical role of experiential learning in developing key competencies such as empathy, awareness, and communication. This framework incorporates the concept of "self-cultivation" from Eastern philosophy, accentuating the significance of well-being for health-care professionals. The research not only enriches medical humanities education and practice by incorporating Eastern perspectives but also deepens the overall understanding of humanity in health care.

Abstract:This article charts the emergence of visual medical humanities as a space of academic research, creative practice and lively critical debate, with a focus on how art historical scholarship has influenced the field’s formation. Concentrating on developments over the past decade, it offers an overview of current scholarship while highlighting opportunities and challenges for the future. We begin with a survey of medical and health humanities handbooks and readers, noting that their engagement with art and visual culture is predominately limited to the contexts of therapy, clinical pedagogy and medical history. The main part of the article explores art historical scholarship in relation to three areas of significance for the medical humanities. First, we address art historical research that engages with medical history, identifying major topoi including the anatomical body, the doctor-patient encounter and the close relationship between clinical and artistic vision; we argue that this work has tended to presume, rather than explicitly articulate, its relationship to medical humanities and recommend that art historians wishing to engage more deeply with the medical humanities need to clearly communicate what their work brings to wider debates in the field. Second, we explore contemporary arts practices that mobilise health-related experiences, forms of care and practical activism: medical humanities, we argue, has much to gain from a critical engagement with contemporary (as well as historical) art. Third, we review three art history-led projects that are redefining the field and promoting new models for collaborative ‘entanglement’ across disciplines: Art HX: Visual and Medical Legacies of British Colonialism; Visualizing the Virus ; and Confabulations: Art Practice, Art History, Critical Medical Humanities . By arguing for the vital importance of attending to the critical complexities of art and visual culture, this article aims to enrich existing debates and provoke a new wave of visually engaged medical humanities scholarship.
